Introduction In order to improve the training and provide better knowledge of foreign languages we have to accelerate the realization of the National Programmer of Personnel Training in the country. As in many other aspects of life the situation changed in a language policy. That requires creation of new textbooks, dictionaries, manuals. In order to fulfill this goals one must know every field of linguistics. In my opinion the theme of the work is very actual because there is not any manual which compare the lexical stylistic devices of the Uzbek and the English language. The decree of the first president of the republic of Uzbekistan on measures for further enhancement of the system of teaching of foreign languages 1 enlarges our possibilities to introduce and implement the advanced foreign language teaching methods. That is why our young independent country needs more skilled personnel, well-educated specialists. In order to educate “Harmoniously developed generation” educators should use all the opportunities which are given by the government. Our country is one of developing countries of the world and connecting with other most developed counties of the world. In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated May 13 in Tashkent, 2 The document also aims to develop intercultural relations of Uzbekistan, to study Uzbek language and literature, its historical roots and transmit the masterpieces of Uzbek language to the European countries, 3 deep study of the prospects for development in the context of globalization, the Uzbek language and literature at all stages of the education system, the quality of education and training, as well as the growing needs of the public. 1 Tashkent, December 10, 2012 2 Alisher Navoiy state university of Uzbek language and literature was established. 3 Our president SH. In my research I have investigated history of the direct method. 4 The aim of the method is given clearly and also specific characteristics. Benefits of using methods during teaching process are significant. Teachers just should know what kind of techniques and strategies should be used while conducting their lesson to teach a language in easer way by using direct method. Moreover, information about advantages and disadvantages of using the method is covered in my work. Wet says, 5 “Language is expression of ideas by means of which speech sounds are combined into words, words are combined into sentences and combination of sentences gives answers to ideas and thoughts”. English has always been rated high in Pakistan. In the past, it was treated as a compulsory subject from class 6 upwards in the public school system. It is being offered as a compulsory subject in English medium schools and is increasingly used as a medium of instruction. The private schools offer English as a subject in nursery classes. It means that students of public schools start studying English at the age of 11 years old, whereas the students of English medium schools start studying English at the age of 4 years old. Teaching English is important for the following reasons: a. English is a means for understanding the foreign education. b. English is the language of higher education. c. English is the source of scientific and technological advancement. d. It is the medium for international commerce, trade and communication 6 Keeping in view the status of English, the government of Pakistan has made a decision to introduce English as a compulsory subject from the first level. The main objective of this study was to determine the role of direct teaching in the academic achievement of English students at the secondary level A 2. 4 By whom, where and when was this method used firstly? 5 1992 6 Richards, 1991. 4

Chapter I Theoretical foundation of direct method. 1.1 Creation of direct method as the most effective teaching method If we take a deeper look into direct method's philosophies, we can see that it’s something teachers want to try out it in their classroom. Let’s begin.What’s the Direct Method? Around the turn of the 19th century in England a method arose that served to right the shortcomings of the grammar-translation method—the most prevalent language teaching approach in those days.So it contrasts with the grammar– translation method & Bilingual method of teaching and other traditional approaches, as well as with C.J.Dodson's bilingual method. It was adopted by key international language schools such as Berlitz and Inlingua in the 1970s. The direct method was developed as an antithesis to grammar-translation method. When the grammar-translation method’s weaknesses became apparent, the direct method expressly addressed those competencies scarcely touched by its predecessor. So what’s the grammar-translation method? Let’s review. It’s the teaching method that puts grammar—its rules, morphology, syntax— at the forefront. Meaning, language is taught by analyzing the different elements of language and explicitly prescribing correct ways of combining those elements. A teacher composing a sample sentence on the board, and then labeling the words as nouns, verbs and adjectives while explaining how they relate to each other, is using grammar-translation method to teach language. The approach is usually championed in textbooks where the different parts of speech have their own chapters and, at the end of each chapter, practice exercises abound. The “translation” part of “grammar-translation” is embodied in the vocabulary lists that give the equivalents of words in the target language. Translation exercises where students are asked to translate words, phrases and sentences are often used. 5

The grammar-translation method is especially adept at developing writing and reading skills, which is very important in dealing with Latin and Greek—dead languages, but for which a wealth of preserved literature abounds. But when it comes to practical, modern, spoken languages, it hasn’t resulted in students with communicative ability to carry an interesting conversation in the target language. So now comes the direct method, a repudiation of its predecessor. 7 As we shall soon see, grammar, which is at the core of the grammar- translation method, isn’t even expressly taught in this approach. There are no grammar exercises, no committing of rules to memory, no lessons on how to write the plural form of a noun or how to conjugate a verb. That’s why it’s also known as the “anti-grammatical method.” And while the grammar-translation is taught using the students’ first language, the direct method uses only the target language. Imagine! In a Spanish class that uses this method, you’d only use Spanish to teach your students the language. The direct method is also known as natural method because it looks to the process of first language acquisition to set the context and techniques for second language acquisition. When we learned our mother tongue, we didn’t go through grammar lessons and translation drills. It was developed as a reaction to the grammar translation method and is designed to take the learner into the domain of the target language in the most natural manner. The main objective is to impart a perfect command of a foreign language. The main focus being to make the learner think in the targeted language in the same manner as the learning of his/her mother-tongue in the most natural way. In traditional language-learning, pupil participation was found to be diminished as the teaching is perceived to be long and monotonous. 7 Graff, W. (1985). Language and Learning Principles. . Direct method in teaching a language is directly establishing an immediate and audio visual association between experience and expression, words and phrases, idioms and meanings, rules and performances through the teachers' body and mental skills, without any help of the learners' mother tongue. 7

1.2 The aims and special characteristics, of using direct method in teaching English to A2 level students. The direct method aims at establishing a direct bond between experience and expression. According to the direct method, the students should think directly in English. Direct method of teaching languages aims to build a direct way into the world of the target language making a relation between experience and language, word and idea, thought and expression rule and performance. This method intends for students to learn how to communicate in the target languageThis method is based on the assumption that the learner should experience the new language in the same way as he/she experienced his/her mother tongue without considering the existence of his/her mother tongue. The direct method looks to the processes of first language acquisition and applies them a second time to second language acquisition. When we first learned English, we didn’t have translations to get us through the day. Mommy and daddy talked to us in simple English and we slowly acquired it. Sure, there were times when we made mistakes. But through trial and error, we groped our way to fluency. We not only speak English, we also think and dream in English.If that’s how your students acquired their first language, then there’s no reason why the same mechanism wouldn’t work in second (or third, or fourth) language acquisitionSpeaking is supreme In the direct method, listening and speaking skills are given first priority. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t have enough communicative skills to find their way through a speed date. With the direct method, instead of learning about the language, students use the language to send and receive communication.In the teaching techniques that we will talk about shortly, you will notice that students are actively engaged in the different classroom activities. They’re not just passively sitting while taking down copious notes. In the direct method, students do a lot of talking, gesturing, acting and interacting. They’re encouraged to talk, no matter how imperfectly. The more talking time the students get, the better. They interact with you, the teacher, they interact with fellow students. Instead of looking at examples of sentences written on the blackboard, they get to feel it roll off their tongues and hear themselves speak in a language they’ll soon be fluent in. By placing the correct emphasis on comprehension and conversational skills, students are given vivid firsthand experience with the language. They aren’t just learning about the language, they’re actually using it to send a message, perform a task or ask a question. With the direct method, language is really not an academic endeavor, as it has been for the grammar-translation method. Language is a way to communicate. The direct method looks to the processes of first language acquisition and applies them a second time to second language acquisition. 1.3 Specific techniques and strategies of the direct method "Only the target language is used” That’s the first thing you read in any direct method lesson plan. While some do prefer to have some room to throw a little mother tongue here and there, like in teaching vocabulary, direct method purists would never utter a single sound outside the target language. Even in the first few sessions of the course when members of the class will be absolute beginners and all the words that are coming out of your mouth will sound like Greek to them, 9 you need to stick the target language when doing your presentations. That is, do everything possible—demonstrating, dramatizing, gesturing—to send your message using only the target language. The idea is that going through translations only bogs down learning. Students should be trained to think in the target language. Going through translations conditions them to think first in their first language, before converting the information to the target language. Your students should be trained to see the world through the lens of the target language. In a Spanish class for example, when a student sees a red fruit hanging from a tree, she should immediately be thinking, “la manzana,” not “that’s an apple, hmmm… let’s see, apple is manzana in Spanish. That’s la manzana!” There should be a direct connection between the sight of the fruit and la manzana. And it’s your job as the teacher to make this direct connection. ●Question/answer exercise  the teacher asks questions of any type and the student answers. ●Dictation  the teacher chooses a grade-appropriate passage and reads it aloud. ●Reading aloud  the students take turn reading sections of a passage, play or a dialogue aloud. 9 even if you’re not teaching Greek 12

●Student self-correction  when a student makes a mistake the teacher offers him/her a second chance by giving a choice. ●Conversation practice  the students are given an opportunity to ask their own questions to the other students or to the teacher. This enables both a teacher- learner interaction as well as a learner-learner interaction. ●Paragraph writing  the students are asked to write a passage in their own words. There are also the most important 5 Direct Method Teaching Techniques: 1. Example proliferation When you only have the target language to use during your lectures, you have to make it up somehow. Example proliferation is one of the ways you do that. 10 In order for your students to connect the dots and figure out vocabulary and rules of grammar for themselves, you have to give them plenty of material to work with. This means that instead of just giving one or two examples to illustrate your point, you work with five, six or even ten examples. And not only that—you’ll present each of the examples several times. Repetition is key in the direct method if students are to draw the correct conclusions. The examples that you give should be simple, unambiguous and interesting. Let’s say you want to teach the class the shapes, say circle. You have many different ways to dramatize this concept. Besides the obvious, which is drawing a circle on the board, you can bring different objects that exhibit the shape. How about a hula hoop, rings, coins, CDs, buttons, cookie, plate, frisbee or medal? How about bringing in pictures of the sun, a rotunda, the London Eye and a pizza? Notice how difficult it is to resist seeing the connection between what you’re bringing and the concept of “circle?” The more interesting the things you offer to the class, the stronger and more memorable those mental connections will be. 10 Lionel, M. When students have pizzas and pies staring back at them, it’s very hard not to get the point. You can do a comprehension check by presenting an object of a different shape and asking the class if it’s a circle or not 2. Visual support A mantra of the direct method is “demonstrate, don’t translate.” When you do example proliferation to drive home a point, you would probably be hitting different learning modalities, different senses. And the most important sensory mechanism to hit—and hit again and again—is the visual sense. There are many ways you can do this. A simple gesture can make your point vivid and clarify your intent. For example, you can use a close fist to signify strength. Execute it over and over and your ESL students will know what you mean when you say, “This table is built strong.”The thing is, there’s a whole language based on signs and gestures alone. This can only mean that with enough well-timed actions, a whole new language can be taught.You can also do actual body demonstrations instead of just using your arms. You can jump,punch, dance, even swim. You can exaggerate body language to provide context cues for your message. Teaching about airplanes? Dramatize it by zooming around class, hopping from one airport to another. As suggested earlier, you can bring labeled pictures or even the actual objects to help dramatize the content of your lessons.Of course, the direct method requires that the teacher be prepared. Nothing beats a teacher who knows their stuff. 3. Listening activities Remember when you were a kid and your mom and dad used to read you bedtime stories? You probably didn’t understand every word of it. You also probably did not know that it was actually also a great linguistic lesson—especially if one of your parents knew how to modulate their voice and often went overboard telling the 14

story.Do the very same thing with your students. Read them a story. Preferably the kind with cool pictures. If you can somehow use a projector to have the images on the wall, so much the better. Choose a story containing simple sentences. Pace yourself. The goal of storytelling here isn’t to get to the last page. The story is your vehicle to expose your students to more of the language. So if you need to repeatedly read the sentences several times before proceeding to the next page, then do so.You don’t need to read verbatim, you can do short asides. For example, if there’s a line that reads, “The lips of the princess were painted red,” you can elaborate a bit by saying, “Red. Just like the rose I showed you earlier, remember?” So pace yourself. If there’s a particular vocabulary or concept in the story that you want to elaborate, then spend a little more time on it. Another listening activity that you can do is playing a conversation of two native speakers. 11 (They can be talking about anything, as long as they use simple sentences and aren’t conversing too fast.) Replay several times, then ask the students about the contents of the dialogue.The goal in these activities is really not to understand everything. It’s to understand what’s going on. What’s the story about? What are these two people talking about? If they understand the message, then they’ve just experienced the target language as it’s used to convey a specific message. 4. Oral exercises and tasks The direct method is a speech-centered teaching approach and believes that there’s nothing like having your students talk in the target language. Make it a clear goal to make your students talk in class as early in the course as possible—in the first class, really. Grab any excuse you have to make them open their mouths and use the target language. For example, engage them interactively often by 11 Richards, J. (1991). The Context of Language Teaching. asking questions, encouraging them to reply only in the target language. You can ask the class as a whole or random students individually. “Jerry, how was your weekend?” “Class, did you see the news this morning? Any reactions?” “Can anyone tell me their greatest fear?” Sure, they’ll maybe answer you in the most basic form of the target language that they can muster, even almost incoherently mumbling. But you know that’s all part of the process. 12 Let them interact with each other. For example, split them up into pairs and let them do question-and-answer dialogues. One of the students will ask all the questions, the other will do the answering. They can ask any question that they want, and the answer given must be as honest as possible. The goal here isn’t to ask grammatically perfect questions and give grammatically perfect answers. It’s to experience what it’s like to send and receive messages in the target language. After five questions and five answers, make them switch positions and do another five rounds of Q&A.Also give them opportunities to talk in front of the class. You can extend the previous activity by making them present it in class. Give the pairs a chance to practice a little and put them on deck.Like I said, every time you find an opportunity to make your students enunciate the sounds of the target language, grab it. Even a simple reading task where you call on each student to read aloud different parts of text in front of the class would go a long way in giving them firsthand experience with the language The direct method looks to the processes of first language acquisition and applies them a second time to second language acquisition. groped our way to fluency. We not only speak English, we also think and dream in English.e. 5. Stress free and supportive environment Providing your students with a stress-free and supportive environment is a standard for all the other teaching approaches, but nowhere is it more important than in the direct method. Imagine being a student, sitting in your first language class, and immediately the teacher is addressing you in the language that you’re supposed to be learning— even though you haven’t learned a word yet. Everything that comes out of her mouth sounds all Greek to you (even though it’s Spanish or Korean). Yeah, her gestures and tones help somehow, but you can’t be really sure what she means.Even so, you start picking up a few sounds and tones, a few words here and there that you think have a certain meaning.The classroom situation is very fluid and you just don’t know when the teacher will call on you and make you stand in front of the class. You can’t just sit at the back of the classroom and fly under the radar until the course finishes.Imagine that. As good as this is for getting students to be observant, think critically and absorb the language naturally, it could be a little intimidating. As a teacher, it’s your first responsibility to make every member of the class understand that mistakes aren’t fatal. They don’t have social repercussions. Mistakes are part of language learning and you have to give students enough confidence to participate in class, regardless of uncertainty.Let them know that you’re there for support. One of the ways you can do this is by making sure that when you call on someone and throw them a question, you never leave without giving the correct answer. For example, you can ask, “Tim, what color is this?” Tim sees that you’re pointing to a yellow banana, but doesn’t know how to respond. What do you do? You feed him the answer and then let him tell it to you. You: “It’s yellow. Yellow! This banana is yellow. What color is this?” 17

Tim: “Yellow.” You: “Very good! Class, the banana is yellow.” What if Tim ventures on another answer, like “red,” how do you respond? You give Tim plenty of opportunity to self-correct and guide him to the answer. You can repeat his answer with a questioning tone (“Red?”) then give him options by saying, “Is it red (pointing to something red), or is it yellow (point to the banana)?”If he mispronounces “yellow,” feed the correct pronunciation to him and let him throw it back to you. In short, nobody in your class gets asked a question without being able to give the correct answer. Make students feel that you won’t leave them hanging, you won’t embarrass them in class and they’ll be active and willing participants in the learning process.And that’s what the direct method is all about—a unique method with wonderful virtues of its own. Chapter II. The role of direct method in teaching English. 2.1. The usage of direct method in teaching process Language is learned inductively. As mentioned before, grammar isn’t explicitly taught in the direct method.You won’t be telling students about rules and 18

such. Instead, you’ll let your students figure out the rules for themselves. Your job is to give them plenty of materials to piece together so they can connect the dots and discover the parameters for themselves.Just as we acquired our first language through repeated exposure, so should it be in class. We didn’t memorize anything for our mother tongue, we simply acquired it through repeated exposure. So, how do teachers teach grammar when they aren’t supposed to point out any linguistic rule? It’s actually easier than we think. And, as a fulfilling bonus, teacher get to witness her students slowly figure things out for themselves.Students learn best when teacher teach them things that are only slightly beyond their reach and help them “get there” by giving them simple inputs that they can actually use to figure things out. Let’s say that in a English class a teacher wants to teach the word for the color red—a vocabulary lesson. Instead of using direct translation and writing on the board, “QIZIL = RED” the teacher maked things more interesting and more fun. Bring several objects of the color—perhaps a red truck, a red ball, a red cap, a rose and lipstick. Every time the teacher points to the objects, say “This is red" Go through the different objects and keep on repeating “red.” With repeated exposure, the students will soon get the point. To check for comprehension, point to an object of different color, the teacher says a blue pen, and asks,“Red?” The class should give a resounding “No!" Let’s say that in an ESL class you want to teach some grammar rule, like how to form the plural of nouns. You might want to bring two sets of pictures. One depicting lone objects, the other, depicting a group. You hold the pictures side by side, clearly enunciating, for example, “car” on your right and “cars” on your left. Repeat this process for several pairs of pictures, emphasizing the “s” sound each time. Your students will pick up on the clues and figure out the rules for themselves. Now you have to trust them on this. They may not get it right away, they may not get all of it, but you have to let those light bulbs work by themselves 19

because this is the kind of learning that really stays with the students.The benefit of Igetting students aware of target language is to activate schemata/schema which essentially means getting students tuned into the language and preparing them for the lesson. There I'll give a list of activities with direct method. 1. Antonym Matching The usual way to introduce key language is to just write them up on the whiteboard and provide the definition. This, in itself, is rather mundane and predictable. So, to liven things up a little more is to write up the words on pieces of paper all cut up and then write the opposite meanings on different pieces of paper. Get students to match words with their opposite meaning. 13 Not only does it give the learners a chance to think about the target language but it also gets them thinking about corresponding words which have an opposite meaning. An additional idea is to just type up all the target language on one side of paper and their corresponding antonyms on the other side – all mixed up – and then learners have to match it that way. 2. Definition Matching A similar activity to above is to write out the target language on one side of a worksheet and the corresponding definition on the other side and get students to match the word with the suitable definition. It is a good activity for learners and it is best to have some learner dictionaries to hand in case students want to check definitions if they are unsure. This activity is also a useful exercise at the end of the lesson for students to review the target language they have acquired during the lesson. An optional activity is to split up the class into two groups, give one half the class the target language to find and write out the definitions from a dictionary on a separate piece of paper and give the other half the class the remaining half of the target language to find in a dictionary. Once they have finished, collect the words and definitions from each group, redistribute the words and definitions and 13 Tanveer, M. (1998). then the groups try to match words and definitions. It is a useful exercise and it would provide an opportunity for students to review language at the end of the class. 3. Unjumble the Words A simple and effective way for students to work out the target language is to jumble up all the letters from target language. It is such a popular activity for teachers and it takes little time to prepare for this activity. 4. Missing Vowels This is another quick and easy task for learners to focus on and is especially invaluable for Arabic learners of English, due to their weakness of reading and writing in English. It is very easy to do in MS Word and all you need to do is type out a few underscores where the vowels are. It is simple to do, type the word in MS Word and then highlight the vowel by pressing “Shift” and using the arrow keys. Then type the underscore where the vowel is located. Handout the worksheet to learners and give them a time limit to complete. Once learners have finished, you could nominate students to come up to the whiteboard and write out the words, without their worksheet, from memory. Again it places students to focus on the spelling when reviewing the language and you could then use some of the other activities in this post to exploit target language fully. 5. Flashcard Drills This is one of the most popular activities for introducing target language and one that students also enjoy. You first show a picture or a word and then read it out in a clear voice and then get students to repeat. All students could repeat or you could nominate particular students to repeat. Another activity is to sit in a circle, select a flashcard, speak the word or phrase, pass the card to another and then that student repeats the word or phrase. The flashcard is then passed around the circle of students until it arrives back to you. This activity could be sped up by passing 21

the flashcards to students on your left and on your right, with learners trying to keep up with saying the target language and all the flashcards being passed around. 6. Stress Patterns An alternative activity is to write out the target language that you would like to introduce and then determine where the stress is placed within the word. You then create a table with the different stress patterns and ask students to complete the table by placing the words under the corresponding stress pattern. It is a useful activity which could then lead on nicely to a pronunciation focus with target language. 7. Phonemic Words Another activity to focus on pronunciation is to write out the phonemic script for target language to get learners to become more aware how words are pronounced. It is also a great idea to get students thinking about how they would spell these words and they will start to see patterns with vowel sounds and the spelling of these. The teacher could first introduce the words one-by-one with the use of flashcards – and using idea 5 above – or the teacher could place all words on the whiteboard and nominate students to pronounce selected words. It is a quick and easy activity and it does not take a lot of preparation for this activity. 8. Lost in Translation A teacher first translates target language into Uzbek and then asks students to try to find a suitable translation in English – this is called back translation and quite effective. Learners could use their mobile devices and electronic dictionaries to translate the target language. You may find that learners will discover synonyms of target language. 9. Disappearing Words Essentially, what you do is write up all the words around the whiteboard, drill the language, explain the definition of the key language. You then tell students to close their books – if they were making any notes of the target language and their 22

definitions – and tell them that they have one minute to remember as many words as possible. You then draw a circle around all words or phrases, point to it and students say the word. You slowly erase the words, keeping the circles that you drew around the word and then point to it. Students have to recall the word from memory and you then start to remove more and more words, so in the end all you have is a blank whiteboard with circles around missing words or phrases. It is up to the students to remember as many key words or phrases that they can remember and it is an engaging activity for all learners no matter their age. 10. Wordsearch This is a wonderful activity that I like to do either as a vocabulary review or an introduction, particularly for young learners. It is easy to create a wordsearch, all you have to do is search for the term ‘Wordsearch Maker’ in Google and you will be directed to various different websites dedicated to the creation of word search puzzles. However, I would recommend the Teachers Direct website as a tool to create puzzles for language learners. It is wonderfully simple to create and all you have to do is to type out the target language in the website. This activity lends itself well to non-romanic language learners as they must get used to the spelling of the English language. The key Aspects of this method are: I. Introduction of new word, number, alphabet character, sentence or concept (referred to as an Element) : • SHOW...Point to Visual Aid or Gestures (for verbs), to ensure student clearly understands what is being taught. • SAY...Teacher verbally introduces Element, with care and enunciation. • TRY...Student makes various attempts to pronounce new Element. • MOULD...Teacher corrects student if necessary, pointing to mouth to show proper shaping of lips, tongue and relationship to teeth. • REPEAT...Student repeats each Element 5-20 times. 23

NOTE: Teacher should be aware of "high frequency words and verbs" and prioritize teaching for this. (i.e. Teach key verbs such as "To Go" and "To Be" before unusual verbs like "To Trim" or "To Sail"; likewise, teach Apple and Orange before Prune and Cranberry.) II. Syntax, the correct location of new Element in sentence: • SAY & REPEAT...Teacher states a phrase or sentence to student; Student repeats such 5-20 times. • ASK & REPLY IN NEGATIVE...Teacher uses Element in negative situations (e.g. "Are you the President of the United States?" or "Are you the teacher?"); Students says "No". If more advanced, may use the negative with "Not". • INTERROGATIVES Teacher provides intuitive examples using 5 "w"s (Who, What, Where, Why, When) or How". Use random variations to practice. • PRONOUNS WITH VERBS Using visuals (such as photos or illustrations) or gestures, Teacher covers all pronouns. Use many random variations such as "Is Ana a woman?" or "Are they from France?" to practice. • USE AND QUESTIONS...Student must choose and utilize the correct Element, as well as posing appropriate questions as Teacher did. III. Progress, from new Element to new Element (within same lesson): A. Random Sequencing: 1. After new Element (X) is taught and learned, go to next Element (Y). 2. After next Element (Y) is taught and learned, return to practice with Element (X). 3. After these two are alternated (X-Y; Y-X; Y-Y, etc), go to 3rd Element (Z). 4. Go back to 1 and 2, mix in 3, practice (X-Y-Z; Z-Y-X; Y-Y-Z, etc.) and continue building up to appropriate number of Elements (may be as many as 24

20 per lesson, depending on student, see B.1), practicing all possible combinations and repeating 5-20 times each combination. B. Student-Led Limits: 1. Observe student carefully, to know when mental "saturation" point is reached, indicating student should not be taught more Elements until another time. 2. At this point, stop imparting new information, and simply do Review as follows: C. Review: Keep random, arbitrary sequencing. If appropriate, use visuals, pointing quickly to each. Employ different examples of Element that are easy to understand, changing country/city names, people names, and words student already knows. Keep a list of everything taught, so proper testing may be done. D. Observation and Notation: Teacher should maintain a student list of words/ phrases that are most difficult for that student. The list is called "Special Attention List" IV. Progress, from Lesson to Lesson: • LESSON REVIEW The first few minutes of each lesson are to review prior lesson(s). • GLOBAL REVIEW Transition from Lesson Review to a comprehensive review, which should always include items from the Special Attention List. V. Advanced Concepts: • Intermediate and Advanced Students may skip some Element introduction as appropriate; become aware of student's language abilities, so they are not frustrated by too much review. If Student immediately shows recognition and knowledge, move to next Element. • Non-Standard Alphabets: Teaching Student to recognize letters/characters and reading words should employ same steps as in above Aspect I, and alphabet variations may be taught using Aspect III. Writing characters and words should initially be done manually, either on paper or whiteboard. 25

• Country Accents: Any student at intermediate stages or higher should be made aware of subtle variations in pronunciation, which depend on geography within a country or from country to country. An integral aspect of the Direct Method is varying the setting of teaching; instructors try different scenarios using the same Element. This makes the lessons more "real world," and it allows for some confusing distractions to the student and employs organic variables common in the culture and locale of language use. The principles of the Direct Method in teaching English:- 1. Reading in the target language should be taught from the beginning of the language instruction; however, the reading skill will be developed through practice with speaking. Language is primarily speech. Culture consists of more than the fine arts (e.g. in this lesson we observed the students studying geography and cultural values. 2. Objects (e.g., realia or pictures) present in the immediate classroom environment should be used to help students understand the meaning. 3. The native language shouldn’t be used in the classroom. 4. The teacher should demonstrate, not explain or translate. It is desirable that students make a direct association between the target language and meaning. 5. Students should learn to think in the target language as soon as possible. Vocabulary is acquired more naturally if students use it in full sentences, rather than memorizing. 6. The purpose of language learning is communication (therefore, students need to learn how to ask questions as well as answer them). 7. Pronunciation should be worked on right from the beginning of language instruction. 8. Self-correction facilitates language learning. 26

9. Lesson should contain some conversational activity—some opportunity for students to use language in real contexts. Students should be encouraged to speak as much as possible. 10. Grammar should be taught inductively. There may never be an explicit grammar rule given. 11. Writing is an important skill, to be developed from the beginning of language instruction. 12. The syllabus is based on situations or topics, not usually on linguistic structures. 13. Learning another language also involves learning how speakers of that language live. 2.2. Adventages and disadventages of using direct method The Direct Method however, has some distinctive features and advantages which make it useful even today despite the advent of newer, more popular English language learning methods and approaches. Advantages 27

The Direct Method is fairly simple and straightforward in its application towards language acquisition. The general manner of teaching using this method involves a three-stage procedure: Presentation · Practice · Production Each of these three general lesson stages has its own particular aspects and characteristics. We’ll briefly then examine each of these lesson and planning stages in order to have a better understanding of the Direct Method and its application. Foreign Language Acquisition Using Direct Method The Presentation Stage – In the presentation lesson stage of the Direct Method, the English or foreign language learners are introduced to the topic or theme of the lesson. This can be done through images, a video clip, a sound or audio clip, a short story, an anecdote, a Total Physical Response (TPR) physical activity or game, a drama presentation, teaching of lexis or a short six to eight word vocabulary list or other introductory method lasting approximately five to eight minutes at the beginning of the lesson. The Practice Stage – In the practice stage of a Direct Method lesson, the learners get an opportunity to work with lexis, vocabulary or grammatical elements of the lesson theme using a variety of short, dynamic activities as an aid in internalizing the selected material. This is most frequently done in context using practice activities including: · Word search puzzles · Crossword puzzles · True / false exercises using the lexis or vocabulary · Cloze exercises and / or fill – in – the- blanks writing exercises · Cognitive pairs or matching written activities, to name a few 28

This stage of the lesson features guided practice in using the lexis, vocabulary or grammar structure of the lesson. This stage is also relatively short, lasting from fifteen to twenty minutes, typically longer than the presentation stage. The Production Stage – The production stage of a Direct Method lesson allows the learners an opportunity for free or unguided practice in producing new language using the lexis, vocabulary or grammatical theme structure of the lesson. Learners may have short dialogues, conversations, interviews or inter-active oral discourse and dynamic speaking activities among themselves. Writing production activities like producing e-mails, notes, recipe or shopping lists, completing questionnaires by talking with several other learners or a small group are included as production stage activities. The purpose here is to give learners ample time for actual application of the lexis, vocabulary, grammar structure or other featured linguistic element. Language Acquisition Advantages The Direct Method of language acquisition and teaching offers several key advantages to both the English or foreign language teacher and the learners. Some of these are: · The lesson approach is simple and straightforward · Learners can easily follow the pace and content of the lesson · The simple format of a Direct Method lesson makes it easier for teachers to prepare · Lesson objectives for each stage are clear and simple · Pacing or timing of each Direct Method lesson stage allows ample time to develop each stage · Priority is given to the third or final stage of Direct Method lessons giving added weight to the free or unguided production of new language on the part of the English or foreign language learners 29

Lessons are prepared to feature a specific grammar or structure point, specific key lexis or vocabulary, develop reading, listening comprehension or communicative writing skillsSo even though the Direct Method may no longer be “in vogue" with industry language acquisition leaders, the advantages of the Direct Method make it worthy of consideration as an addition to the teaching and learning repertoire of any English or foreign language. A list ofadvantages of Direct Method in Teaching English:  The following are the advantages of the Direct Method in teaching English:  Direct method helps learner to acquire correct pronunciation.  It provides better understanding  Time saving  Helped in teaching idioms  It provides better fluency of language  Based on psychological principle  No gap between active and passive vocabularies. 1. It is natural method:  In the direct method the order of teaching is observing, listening, speaking, reading and writing. This is the natural order of learning a language. The method makes use of demonstration and conversation. 2. It gives fluency of speech:  As a lot of attention is paid to oral training in this method, the students acquire fluency of speech. This is the reason why students who are taught by the direct are fluent speakers as compared to those who are taught by the translation method. 3. It improves pronunciation:  As the students are made to speak a lot and they are also taught phonetics, their pronunciation improves. 30

4. It aids written work:  Fluency of speech leads to case in writing. To express themselves in writing, the students have only to learn spellings, if a students can express as himself clearly in speaking, he can express himself in writing as well. 5. It facilities the study of literature:  It is believed that since the student acquires an ear for the language in direct method, it facilities the study of literature. 6. It makes use of audio-visual aids:  Audio-visual aids are used in the direct method. This makes the lesson interesting. MERITS Facilitates understanding of language – understanding of the target language becomes easier due to the inhibition of the linguistic interferences from the mother tongue, it establishes a direct bond between contexts, and helps in understanding directly what is heard and read Improves fluency of speech – fluency of speech results in easier writing, it tends to improve expression, expression in writing, and it is a quick way of learning and expanding vocabulary Aids reading – reading becomes easier and more pleasant, and it also promotes a habit of critical studying Improves the development of language sense Full of activities, which make it interesting and exciting Emphasizes the target language by helping the pupil express their thoughts and feelings directly in target language without using their mother tongue Develops listening, speaking, reading and writing Increase in market for goods and services Increased employment opportunities Helps in bringing words from passive vocabulary into active vocabulary 31

Helps in proceeding the English language from particular to general, it bridges the gap between practice and theory Makes use of audio-visual aids and also facilitates reading and writing. Facilitates alertness and participation of students. Disadvantages of Direct Method Teaching of English language:  Direct method is difficult as there no use of mother language.  It isn’t economical as it is requires various teaching aids.  Mayn’t be suitable for average or weaker students.  It requires competent teachers.  It gives overemphasis on listening and speaking skills.  It isn’t effective in early stages of learning. 1. It is an incomplete method:  Direct method lays too much emphasis on speaking. It neglects reading and writing. The tendency is to give insufficient attention to reading and not to teach written work systematically. 2. It requires efficient teachers:  Every teacher can’t make a success of the direct method. Only that teacher can work out this method successfully, who is good at English? Especially conversational English. 3. It requires linguistic minded students:  Direct method can succeed only with those students who are linguistically minded, that is, students who have got a fine ear for the language. Only the clever child can profit by this method . 4. Material facilities aren’t available :  Direct method requires the use of audio-visual aids, but these aren’t available in a majority of our schools. 32

5. The classes are over-crowded:  Small classes are needed for the direct method so that the teacher can pay individual attention. But in a majority of schools the classes are very large. 7. It is difficult for explanation: DEMERITS Ignores systematic written work and reading activities May not hold well in higher-level classes where the translation method is more suitable Supports only limited vocabulary – it restricts the scope of vocabulary as not all words can be directly associated with their meanings Lacks application – the method aims at active command of a language, only the clever child can be profited by this method. Needs skilled teachers; e.g., most of the teachers in Indian schools have a poor command of English Does not suit or satisfy the needs of individual students in large classes Inconvenient in a huge class Ignores reading and writing aspects of language learning Does not teach grammar systematically Time-consuming in creating real life situations Less suitable for slow learners, who struggle with this method. Aims of Direct Method: 33

Direct method occupies an important place amongst the various methods of teaching English, which came as a reaction against the traditional translation method. The direct method was also called the natural method or reformed method. The term ‘Direct method’ apparently was originated in France in a circular of the French minister of Public Instruction in 1901. The method received official sanction in 1908, but was revised in 1909 and again in 1925-26. The principles of the method came from Germany and were popularized by the International Phonetic Association, an association of French teachers formed in 1986. According to Champion, “The direct method is a method of teaching English directly. To teach English directly is to establish a direct or immediate association between experience and expression, between the English word, phrase, or idiom and as meaning in other words of establishing in connection with English the same habit of direct experience as exists is the use of mother-tongue.” Champion has pointed out the following four aims of the direct method: (1) To make the pupil think in English (2) To enable the pupil express his thoughts and feelings directly by means of English with the intervention of his mother tongue. (3) To enable the pupil that instinctive unerring language sense which we all possess in varying degrees in the mother tongue. Essential Features or Principles of Direct Method: (1) By this method it is possible to establish a direct association between the experience and expression, which should be one of the features of direct method. (2) There should be no use of mother tongue. It should be reduced to a minimum or almost the hearing and speaking of English. (3) The third quality of this method is that every sentence, which is complete, is a unit only; it is a means of expressing ideas. (4) The direct method emphasizes the oral aspects of teaching. Spoken words should be made the basis and as far as possible the medium of instruction. 34

(5) In the direct method grammar is taught inductively rather than deductively. CONCLUSION 35

To sum up t he direct method of teaching was developed as a response to the Grammar-Translation method. It sought to immerse the learner in the same way as when a first language is learnt. All teaching is done in the target language, grammar is taught inductively, there is a focus on speaking and listening, and only useful ‘everyday’ language is taught. The weakness in the Direct Method is its assumption that a second language can be learnt in exactly the same way as a first, when in fact the conditions under which a second language is learnt are very different. The teacher and the students are more like partners in the teaching/learning process. Teacher/student interaction became fuller, guessing of context or content, completing fill-ins, and doing “cloze” exercises were the order of the day. The teacher is as the facilitator of the language and the students is the active learners who are active in learning and exploring the target language. The main focus lies on communication in this method. Here a special emphasis is given to spoken language rather than writing. Although active and passive skills are furthered there is a certain bias in favour of speaking. Grammar is not dealt with deductively, but students are expected to develop an intuitive feeling inductively. There is a clear stress on fluency, pronunciation is trained from beginning. As condition for this talking in free speech there is another stress on vocabulary rather than on grammatical structures. Pupils learn to communicate in the language but do not get deeper information about the language. As an outcome we can expect that learners who are taught by this method or rather fostered in their acquisition will quickly develop a good command of the target language in means of communication, will be better in oral production and comprehension than in writing and reading, will only later achieve knowledge about grammatical structures of the language, but will develop an unconscious feeling of grammatical correctness. Possibly they may have problems in writing or analysing complicated texts, as reading is not a focus of this method and texts used in the lessons are rather narrative than expositorý. 36

The most obvious advantage is that the learner achieves a good performance in the target language and learns to think in it. Hence inappropriate translations are avoided. The student will not be able to explain grammatical structures which might be a hindrance for self-correction. In the light of statistical analysis and the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: It is obvious that children learn a wide range of vocabulary to communicate with others in context.In order to contextualize the vocabulary teachers need to use different techniques to teach it. The foremost common techniques to teach university students vocabulary are by real things (realia), actions (gesture), pictures (illustrations, posters), songs, storytelling, games, using readings, etc.Different linguists provide different reason to illustrate why these techniques are useful in A2 classes. For instance, realia is one of the most useful ways to teach vocabulary because it uses “authentic material”. Wright refers to realia in these terms: “Objects (sometimes called ‘realia’) are an ideal way of showing the meaning of English words for concreting things”. In other words, realia is the use of real objects such as toys to teach animals or plastic or real fruits and vegetables to teach food. It involves students using their senses by touching, smelling and seeing. Another technique usingpictures also have been considered the most common technique to teach vocabulary. Pictures could be designed by the teacher.Additionally, I recommend that stories can be used as a source to motivate children to learn. An EFL teacher can use the favorite story in the learner‘s mother tongue and translate it into English in order to catch learner‘s attention. From all above-stated it is possible to draw the following conclusions. The purpose of this work was to discover the most effective ways of teaching a foreign language to pupils . For achievement of the purpose the works of uzbek and foreign authors on the given problem have been studied. In formation of interest to a subject the huge role is played by the person of the teacher. Therefore a pledge of 37

successful mastering a foreign language by the pupils is professionalism of the teacher which should in the work not only take into account the methodical principles underlying teaching, but also to be in constant search of new receptions and means of teaching which will recover a lesson, will make it fascinating, cognitive and remembered. The most useful for this purpose are the following receptions and methods: methods of constructivism, communicative methods, methods of projects and discussions, games and role games, etc. In my work have been analysed all these methods and the receptions raising quality of training to foreign language on the basis of studying of various techniques of teaching, used in work with pupils. Many of receptions can be applied with success at teaching children of younger and more advanced age . With its structure, direct teaching is considered one of the most powerful teaching methods. The procedure is systematic and grounded on sound teaching and learning principles. But direct teaching also has its disadvantages. There are situations that can make direct teaching ineffective. But the structure of direct teaching can be rigid enough to hinder the creativity of the teacher. There is very little room to improvise because this method follows a step-by-step procedure. The procedure usually starts with an introduction, followed by the rationale for the instruction, then by the instruction itself. The procedure ends with a summary and then followed by an assessment. Direct teaching, if utilized by unprepared teachers, can be disastrous. For direct teaching or instruction to be effective, the teacher must have a mastery of the subject matter, must prepare a well-organized content, and must have excellent communication skills. Without these traits, a teacher could not effectively carry out direct teaching or direct instruction, nor could they develop higher order thinking skills in the students. As an outcome we can expect that learners who are taught by this method or rather fostered in their acquisition will quickly develop a good command of the 38

Students in the direct teaching method outscored students working in the traditional learning situation. 2. Low achievers in direct teaching showed significant superiority over low achievers learning English by the traditional method. Thus, direct teaching was found to be a more effective method for teaching English to the low achievers, as compared to the traditional method of teaching. 3. High achievers, whether they were taught English by the direct or traditional method, retained learned material at the same rate. 4. Low achievers taught English by the direct method retained more material, as compared to low achievers taught by the traditional method of teaching. Therefore, the direct teaching seemed to be a more effective teaching- learning technique for low achievers. Used literature 39
