English became one of the important instruments of achievement of success in modern life. Knowledge of English is some kind of indicator of many qualities of the modern person. It is already just impossible to imagine the university graduate whohasn't knowledge of Basic English. In order to improve the training and provide better knowledge of foreign languages we have to accelerate the realization of the National Programmer of Personnel Training in the country. As in many other aspects of life the situation changed in a language policy. That requires creation of new textbooks, dictionaries, manuals. In order to fulfill this goals one must know every field of linguistics. In my opinion the theme of the work is very actual because there is not any manual which compare the lexical stylistic devices of the Uzbek and the English language. The decree of the first president of the republic of Uzbekistan on measures for further enhancement of the system of teaching of foreign languages 1 (Tashkent, December 10, 2012) enlarges our possibilities to introduce and implement the advanced foreign language teaching methods. That is why our young independent country needs more skilled personnel, well-educated specialists. In order to educate “Harmoniously developed generation” 2 educators should use all the opportunities which are given by the government. Our country is one of developing countries of the world and connecting with other most developed counties of the world. In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated May 13 in Tashkent 3 , Alisher Navoiy state university of Uzbek language and literature was established. Our president SH. M. Mirzyoev paid great attention to developing and promoting Uzbek language and its culture to the world. Uzbek language to the European countries, deep study of the prospects for development in the context of globalization, the Uzbek language and literature at all stages of the education system, the quality of education and training, as well as the growing needs of the public; Preparing scientific-pedagogical personnel, to produce highly qualified translators, scientific-research works in the country, engaged in the training and retraining of specialists in the field, as well as the areas of preparing research and teaching materials. The decree of our president gives much possibility to linguists for implementing various researches in the field of FL. Comparative analysis of the English adjectives is significant from practical point of view. Training students in the context of professional and specific aspects of the foreign languages, and also studying its genres helps them in the future to establish correct intercultural communication, to be well informed about linguistics, obviously helps to improve literacy skills, to become among colleagues authoritative, stimulates professional growth in the professional environment. I’ve investigated one of the important parts of speech in modern English. The adjective expresses the categorial semantics of property of a substance. It means that each adjective used in tile text presupposes relation to some noun the property of whose referent it denotes, such as its material, color, dimensions, position, state, and other characteristics both permanent and temporary. It follows from this that, unlike nouns, adjectives do not possess a full nominative value. Indeed, words like long, hospitable, fragrant cannot effect any self-dependent nominations; as units of informative sequences they exist only in collocations showing what is long, who is hospitable, what is fragrant. In Uzbekistan, English as a Foreign Language has been taught, in some way, often ineffectively. Traditionally, the Uzbek English teaching system have involved five year study in secondary schools from the 5 th form to 9 th form. And it can be described as a traditional teaching such as translating, revising, rote learning with no enough practice of language. But, lately there has been improvement and development in FL. Most foreign language research has recognized that rote 4

learning and memorizing language forms and words is a very ineffective strategy for learning a target language. In the EFL classroom, using visual tools can help students to strengthen and revise what they have learned. The reason for this may be that they allow students to absorb the information through an additional sensory perception and visuals store the information to the brain easily. Therefore, the researcher, having decided to carry out a research in this field, has revised carefully the works of other scholars on this topic. And she has included them in this theoretical part of the project. A lot has been said so far, concerning the presenting vocabulary in the context of a language classroom. It is very important to remind that the vocabulary of a language like English consists of several hundred thousand words. When we speak of the vocabulary of a language, we are speaking about primarily, the words of that language. Actuality of the theme is devoted to the issues of teaching Vocabulary in context to A2 level learners using communicative language method. Process of studying a foreign language promotes the formation of independence as there is a possibility of using creative tasks and exercises within the limits of the given subject which demands independent work from pupils. They are taught to use a language material for expression of their thoughts in a dialogical speech. Teaching English can and should provide the achievement of practical, educational and developing aims. Besides, the practical purpose the leading. The other purposes are reached in the course of mastering English in the conditions of pupils' active informative of power of apprehension and activity. Pedagogy, guiding and synthesizing these aspects, defines vision of a problem from its specific point of view. The aim of the qualification paper is to investigate interactive ways of teaching vocabulary, to point the importance of giving vocabulary in context but not in isolation. Moreover, to show the benefits of CLT approach in teaching vocabulary. I would like to emphasis the concept that words should be learnt not to remember but for communication. Thus, vocabulary is learnt best when it is 5

practised appropriately. Communicative language teaching (CLT) is the best approach in developing university learners vocabulary through various communicative skill based activities. The tasks are: words are the building blocks of any language and there is no point in lengthy explanations of grammar structures as students will always acquire them in a fixed predetermined order regardless of their mother tongue. These are, however, only theoretical descriptions with considerable practical implications. By means of the following lines, we shall present my personal point of view, stemming from my experiences and observations with foreign language teaching and learning. The recommendations that we shall present will be relevant to acquisition of the foreign language vocabulary. This will be due to the fact that my observations will be related to the nature of vocabulary in general. W e shall cover various strata of vocabulary teaching, paying primary attention to communication strategies that are of an immense importance from a communicative point of view. We shall deal with the studying of methods and ways of development of teaching methods in the course of teaching a foreign language which also promotes the formation and development of intellectual abilities among pupils that will raise the efficiency of teaching and educational process.It will be clear from what has been said above. The problems of the graduation paper are: 1) To consider concept - «teaching vocabulary in context using CLT»; 2) To consider practical application of methods and ways of development of teaching methods at the English lessons. The object of the theme : to point out some effective ways of presenting new vocabulary for A2 level university learners. My intention is to appeal to the communicative side of the problem. As a point of departure, I would like to quote one quite insightful remark that can easily trigger further elaborations. “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be 6

conveyed.” Similar point of view was also presented by Krashenwithin his ´Natural Order Hypothesis´. The subject of the research is to study different methods of teaching vocabulary in context to A2 level learners, giving theoretical argumentation for the development of teaching methods in teaching a foreign language and giving practical recommendations. Methods of the research: Given work is studying the scientific works connected with revealing its psychological aspects, approaches to a technique of the organization of English lessons at school, criteria of an estimation of its efficiency etc. providing success of formation and development of the teaching methods. Great attention of consideration of methodological aspects of a problem of complex formation in teaching, the formations of its potential was paid great attention in works of the famous scientists. Practical value: is to help teachers to design lessons appropriately using reading and listening materials so that learners will be able to learn new words in context. deals with vocabulary learning and teaching. Moreover, it shows some ways of teaching vocabulary through communicative activities. According to statistics, there are at least 500.000 words in English. And Winston Churchill was famous for his particularly large vocabulary, he used 60.000 words in his writing. At average, native English speaker uses 5.000 words in his/her everyday speech. And 50 words make up 45% of everything in English. A good vocabulary gives you a lot of opportunities. The more words you know, the better you will be able to make yourself clear. As it is stated above, since vocabulary is significant aspect of language learning, the strategies to enlarge one’s vocabulary should be considered as significant way to achieve success in learning. The novelty of the work is concluded in new materials of the linguists. Theoretically, foreign language education in Uzbekistan state schools is an optional part of the curriculum. A foreign language is one of the main subjects in the entrance examinations for institutes and universities. A few years ago foreign language education was dominated by the grammar translation method. In 7

education reforms, there is a new emphasis on developing modern teaching methods. In schools, teachers are now expected to encourage speaking and listening skills. The novelty of my work is concluded in the fact, that we had worked out some activities, which we had approbated on English language lessons during our pedagogi c al practice. Investigation of the problem. The first definition of methodology was given by E.M. Ryt in 1930, who wrote that the methodology of teaching foreign languages is a practical application of comparative linguistics. A similar position had A.V. Scherba . There are many suggestions in the literature as to how to develop teaching vocabulary in context. This problem was investigated by many scholars e.g., Davis and Rimm, Guilford, Karnes et al., Olmo, Parnes and Noller, Renzulli, Sternberg and Lubart, Torrance are among them. Construction of the qualification paper. It consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of literature. Total amount of the work is 66 pages. CHAPTER I. THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF TEACHING ENGLISH 1.1. METHODS AND WAYS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO THE SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS AT THE ENGLISH LESSONS Work of the teacher is always a very difficult process. And presently, when prestige of a trade falls everything complicates greatly. In the sphere of art the circle of the problems facing the teacher, is especially wide, from here there is special complexity of our trade. All our activity assumes the creative approach to work. Maybe, it is the basic of difficulty. You cannot learn to be a creative person, 8

but it is possible to learn, to work creatively. For this purpose we also aspire to form in pupils character, will, persistence in mastering of knowledge, love to work. All these qualities help to bring up a professionally competent teacher. To teach the pupil to approach creatively to employment, the teacher should aspire, not present all in an open kind, and always to give "food" for reflexion in homework. Pupils should be able to listen and hear, observe and do the pupil selection. In the conditions of globalization and information of a modern society new demands are made to XXI-st century formation. According to researches of sociologists the most "required" abilities in the modern world is ability to creative development and self-development, ability to acceptance of the creative decision in the course of a dialogue. Therefore it is necessary to give special attention to development not only intellectual, but also creative abilities of trainees. According to our research using modern technologies in teaching English, gives pupils of comprehensive schools opportunities for display of own individuality. Direct, active participation of schoolchildren in the given activity, at the level of complexity, opens the big prospects in business of complex development and formation of creative potential of the person. Besides, comprehending secrets of English language, schoolchildren get acquainted with private world of the western person, with its outlook etc. Language teaching came into its own as a profession in the last century. Central to this process was the emergence of the concept of methods of language teaching. The method concept in language teaching--the notion of a systematic set of teaching practices based on a particular theory of language and language learning is a powerful one, and the quest for better methods preoccupied teachers and applied linguists throughout the 20th century. Howatt documents the history of changes in language teaching throughout history, up through the Direct Method in the 20th century. One of the most lasting legacies of the Direct Method has been the notion of method itself. Methodology in language teaching has been characterized in a variety of ways. A more or less classical formulation suggests that methodology links theory and practice. Within methodology a distinction is 9

often made between methods and approaches, in which methods are held to be fixed teaching systems with prescribed techniques and practices, and approaches are language teaching philosophies that can be interpreted and applied in a variety of different ways in the classroom. This distinction is probably best seen as a continuum ranging from highly prescribed methods to loosely described approaches. Last years the imperative need of using a foreign language appears in all areas of a science, manufacture and culture. At the present time when there are radical changes in teaching, when radically revised the content and teaching methods appropriate it is high time to revisit the history of the methods of teaching foreign languages and the main trends of its development. Now no one doubts that the method of language teaching is a science. The very first definition of methodology was given by E.M. Ryt in 1930, who wrote that the methodology of teaching foreign languages is a practical application of comparative linguistics. A similar position had A.V. Scherba. The emergence of views on the methodology as applied linguistics, was due to the fact that the method 30-s not enough to identify the specificity of a foreign language as a subject, and there was no developed system of research methods, without which there can be no true science. Another direction in determining the methodology as a science, connected with the name B.V. Belyaev, who believed that the technique is nothing like applied psychology. However, a number of problems methods, in particular, the selection of material, especially the use of techniques and ways of working, depending on the audience, cannot be resolved based only on psychology. Therefore, this definition of techniques did not spread. In the late 30-s - early 40-ies starts take shape, one more line - definition of methodology as pedagogical science. Do pedagogy and methodology, there is one object of study - the processes of learning, education, goals and objectives of training, education and maintenance items. Uniform and research methods are, therefore, the determination method as a science teacher was a step forward to its registration as an independent science. The direction in determining the methodology as a science began in the late 40-s. The method is recognized by 10

science, which has its own laws and its methods. The most complete definition of the method reads: “Methods of teaching is the science, exploring the aims and content, pattern, means, methods, techniques and training systems, as well as studying the processes of teaching and training material on a foreign language”. At the beginning of XX-th century there was also another problem. That was the problem of method. It was quite natural, since after the October Revolution of 1917 “new” school demanded the application of new techniques. At that time, advocated direct method. It was believed that this method was based on a correct principle - associating foreign words with the objects themselves. This was the method of natural learning a foreign language, which was the most economical, fastest-reaching goal. Why is this being promoted direct method, when the West is having the idea of mixed method? This was due to several reasons. First, in the royal schools dominated the grammar-translation and textual-translation methods based on cramming, from which it was necessary to be free. Direct same method against them was more progressive, as proceeded from the living language of speech training, as the primary means of language functioning. Secondly, only direct method of instruction intended to communicate. Thirdly, education was not familiar with the proposals of other methods that have arisen in the West after World War I, because this war, and then the civil, broke all contact. All these facts suggest that gradually formed “Uzbek version” of the direct method, which is then in the methodological benefits of the second half of the 20-ies acquired its final shape. Methodology in language teaching has been characterized in a variety of ways. A more or less classical formulation suggests that methodology is that which links theory and practice. 4 Theory statements would include theories of what language is and how language is learned or, more specifically, theories of second language acquisition. syllabus specifications, types of activities, roles of teachers, learners, materials, and so forth. Design features in turn are linked to actual teaching and learning practices as observed in the environments where language teaching and learning take place. This whole complex of elements defines language teaching methodology. Within methodology a distinction is often made between methods and approaches, in which methods are held to be fixed teaching systems with prescribed techniques and practices, whereas approaches represent language teaching philosophies that can be interpreted and applied in a variety of different ways in the classroom. This distinction is probably most usefully seen as defining a continuum of entities ranging from highly prescribed methods to loosely described approaches. The period from the 1950s to the 1980s has often been referred to as "The Age of Methods," during which a number of quite detailed prescriptions for language teaching were proposed. Situational Language Teaching evolved in the United Kingdom while a parallel method, Audio-Lingualism, emerged in the United States. In the middle-methods period, a variety of methods were proclaimed as successors to the then prevailing Situational Language Teaching and Audio- Lingual methods. These alternatives were promoted under such titles as Silent Way, Suggestopedia, Community Language Learning, and Total Physical Response. In the 1980s, these methods in turn came to be overshadowed by more interactive views of language teaching, which collectively came to be known as Communicative Language Teaching. Communicative Language Teaching advocates subscribed to a broad set of principles such as these: 1. The Grammar-Translation Method. Around the turn-of-the-19 th -century, language students often translated volumes from Classical Greek or Latin into English via this method. It consists mainly of exhaustive use of dictionaries, explanations of grammatical rules (in English), some sample sentences, and exercise drills to practice the new structures. Students are given target language reading passages and answer questions that follow. Other activities include translating literary passages from one language into the other, memorizing grammar rules, and memorizing native-language equivalents of target language 12

vocabulary. Vocabulary and grammar are emphasized; pronunciation and other speaking/listening skills are not. Grammar is learned deductively on the basis of grammar rules and examples. Literary language is regarded as superior to spoken language. Class work is highly structured, with the teacher controlling all activities. The teacher supplies correct answers when students cannot. 2 . The Direct Method . The characteristic features of this method are the practical direction in the teaching of foreign language, the ignoring of the existence of the mother tongue, use of visual aids and various exercises both written and oral. The method is called direct because it aims to establish a direct connection between the words in the foreign language and their denotations. The grammatical rules are discovered through many examples. Students speak a great deal in the target language and communicate if in real situations. Speaking and listening skills and correct pronunciation are emphasized. Teacher/student interaction is fuller; it includes guessing of context or content, completing fill-ins, question-and-answer exercises. 3. The Audio-Lingual Method . The audio-lingual method developed with the advent of audio tapes. This method is based on the belief that language learning is the acquisition of correct language habits. The language learner actually hears and mimics native speakers on audio tapes, often used with earphones in a language lab setting. Lessons begin with a sample dialogue to be recited and memorized. This is followed up with substitution pattern and saturation drills in which the grammatical structure previously introduced is reinforced. The teacher directs and controls students' behavior, provides a model and reinforces correct responses. 4. The Silent Way. The teacher remains silent while pupils output the target language through perpetual prompting. A color-coded sound chart called a fidel, with both vowel and consonant clusters on it, is projected onto a screen to be used simultaneously with a pointer, thus permitting the pupil to produce orally on a continuous basis in the target language. Brightly colored Cuisenaire rods are integrated into this method for pupils to learn spatial relationships, prepositions, colors, gender and number concepts, and to create multiple artificial settings 13

through their physical placement. The greatest strength of this method lies in its ability to draw students out orally, while the teacher "takes a back seat". This method works most effectively with round tables being used to promote small group discussion. All four skills are worked on from the beginning. 5 . Suggestopedia. Classes are small and intensive, with a low-stress focus. Material is presented in an especially melodic and artistic way. By activating the right "creative side" of the brain, a much larger portion of the intellectual potential can be tapped, thus drawing out long-term memory. Background classical or baroque chamber music, oftentimes accompanied with soft lights, cushions on the floor for relaxation, yoga, songs and games, question-and-answer sessions are used to make language learning less anxiety provoking. Students focus on communicative use rather than form, little emphasis on grammar is given. 6. Community Language Learning or Counseling Learning .This method is designed to ease the learner into gradual independence and self-confidence in the target language. Learning a language is not viewed necessarily as an individual accomplishment, but rather as a collective experience. Small or large groups are formed to create a language learning community. Student is at first a dependent client of the counselor and becomes increasingly independent through five specified stages. Understanding and speaking are emphasized, though reading and writing have a place. The basic premise of the method can be found in the acronym SARD : S - security (to foster the student's self-confidence), A- attention or aggression (students have opportunities to assert, involve themselves), R- retention and reflection (students think about both the language and their experience learning it), and D -discrimination (sorting out differences among target language forms). 7. 5 Total physical response. One of the best-known examples of the 'Just listen' proposal is the second language teaching approach called 'Total physical response'. In classes, students-children or adults--participate in activities in which they hear a series of commands in the target language, for example: 'stand up', 'sit down', 'pick up the book', 'put the book on the table', 'walk to the door'. number of hours of instruction, students are not required to say anything. They simply listen and show their comprehension by their actions. This instruction differs from the comprehension-based instruction described and from Krashen's theoretical version of' 'Just listen' in an important way: the vocabulary and structures which learners are exposed to are carefully graded and organized so that learners deal with material which gradually increases in complexity and each new lesson builds on the ones before. Total physical response was developed by James Asher, whose research has shown that students can develop quite advanced levels of comprehension in the language without engaging in oral practice 6 . When students begin to speak, they take over the role of the teacher and give commands as well as following them. It is clear that there are limitations on the kind of language students can learn in such an environment. Nevertheless, the evidence seems to show that, for beginners, this kind of active involvement gives learners a good start. It allows them to build up a considerable knowledge of the language without feeling the nervousness that often accompanies the first attempts to speak the new language. 8. The Communicative Language teaching Approach. This acquisition-focused approach sees communicative competence progressing through three stages: (a) aural comprehension, (b) early speech production, and (c) speech activities, all fostering "natural" language acquisition, much as a child would learn his/her native tongue. Following an initial "silent period", comprehension should precede production in speech, as the latter should be allowed to emerge in natural stages. Errors in speech are not corrected aloud. A deliberate, conscious approach to the study of grammar is considered to have only modest value in the language learning process. Pairing off of students into small groups to practice newly acquired structures becomes the major focus. Visualization activities that often make use of a picture files, slide presentations, word games, dialogues, contests, recreational activities, and realia provide situations with problem-solving tasks which might 6 (Asher 1972) See: Asher, J. 1972. include the use of charts, maps, graphs, and advertisements, all to be performed on the spot in class. Comparing instructed and natural settings for language learning. Natural and instructional settings. Five principles for classroom teaching. The principle getting right from the beginning. The principle of saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Native language immersion programs 7 . Other research which is often cited as relevant to the 'Just listen' proposal comes from Canadian Native language immersion programs, which have been described by Krashen as communicative language teaching 'par excellence'. The reason for this is that the focus in Native language immersion is on meaning through subject-matter instruction and the provision of rich, comprehensible input. In many ways, Krashen could not have asked for a better laboratory to test his theory. What have the studies shown? First, there is little doubt that the overall findings provide convincing evidence that these programs are among the most successful large-scale second language programs in existence. Learners develop fluency, functional abilities, and confidence in using their second language. There is, however, a growing awareness that Native language immersion learners still fail to achieve high levels of performance in some aspects of Native language grammar even after several years in these programs. There are several possible explanations for this. Some researchers believe that the learners engage in too little language production because the classes are largely teacher-centered and students are not required to give extended answers 8 . This permits students to operate successfully with their incomplete knowledge of the language because they are rarely pushed to be more precise or more accurate. Communication between students and between teacher and students is quite satisfactory in spite of numerous errors in the students' speech. form-focused instruction has been shown to benefit learners. Studies under the 'Get it right in the end' proposal. It has also been observed that certain linguistic features rarely or never appear in the language of the teacher or the students in these content-based instructional environments. Furthermore, the presence in the classroom of other learners whose inter languages are influenced by the same first language, the same learning environment, and the same limited contact with the target language outside the classroom, make it difficult for an individual learner to work out how his or her own use of the language differs from the target language. The results of the Native language immersion research confirm the importance of comprehensible input in that the students develop not only good comprehension (in reading and listening), but also confidence and fluency in Native language. However, research does not support the argument that an exclusive focus on meaning and comprehensible input is enough to bring learners to mastery levels of performance in their second language. Indeed, the fact that Native language immersion learners continue to make the same linguistic errors after years of exposure to the second language in classrooms which provide a great deal of comprehensible input is a challenge to the claim that language will take care of itself as long as meaningful compre Although all children develop in their own unique fashion, as a direct result of both hereditary and environmental influences, there is a certain pattern of development that applies to nearly all children. It is crucial for today’s educators to have a thorough understanding of that development. Schools today play an important role in the socialization of children and therefore it is critical that teachers know how to best socialize their students. An understanding of basic human developmental stages can be used to gear the teacher’s lesson plans in order to maximize the success of students in both the academic and the social realms of their lives. This understanding can also be used to minimize problems in the classroom. Human development is one of the biggest contributing factors to human behavior. As children go through their different stages of life, they approach learning in different ways. When an educator has an intricate understanding of 17

human development, he or she can use that understanding to make assessments about the behaviors of children in the classroom. As we, the teachers, read, consider which strategies fit most smoothly with the content we teach and the developmental level of the students. Although many techniques, such as brainstorming, can be used at almost any level, others, such as some of the more sophisticated uses of metaphor, are best for students with more highly developed abstract thinking abilities. Only the teacher can determine which ideas are best for his or her students, how they can be adapted, and which areas of the students' lives may provide the best opportunities for transfer. 1.2 THE MOST COMMON DIFFICULTIES IN TEACHING VOCABULARY As English vocabulary is a mixture of various languages, it creates a lot of difficulties and confusion for the foreign learners and teachers of English who wants to acquire English vocabulary. They may know the basic form of the word, but sometimes they may not be acquainted with the other forms for the same thing. For example, from the word House, which is basically a plain Germanic word, a number of word In English are built on this basic word. HOUSE +ING= HOUSING HOUSE+HOLD= HOUSEHOLD HOUSE+WIFE= HOUSEWIFE There are more words whose meaning is HOUSE and HOME related based on Latin word DOMUS (home). These are: DOMESTIC, DOMICILE and DOMESTICITY . There is also another set of words based on the Latin word RESIDERE. These include RESIDE, RESIDENT, RESIDENCE and RESIDENTIAL . People of many other languages only use a single basic form, but Native English Speakers, learners and teachers often use two or three different forms. In the context of vocabulary, sometimes the non-native speakers become confused to see the words that are a little bit different from American and British 18

English according to meaning and appearance.“Although, the differences between British and American pronunciation are not such as should cause any alarm for the future, any fear that Englishmen and Americans may become unintelligible to each other.” 2 Americans speak more slowly and with less variety of tone. “American speech is much more monotonous but it is generally more distinct in its division of syllable than those of British type”. 3 American Speeches is more ‘nasal twang’ biased than the British one. 4 Here are some examples of American and British words. For example, in order to express the idea of telephoning someone, British people use to ring someone up whereas the Americans prefer the expression to call someone. In present practice of teaching foreign languages there are some typical problems forcing the teacher to address to experience of the colleagues, to innovative ideas, to a science. Among these problems, difficulties and lacks of a traditional technique of teaching there are the following basic problems: · Low authority of a subject because of shortages of a present technique of teaching. · Low intensity of pupils' speech activity. · Superficiality in forming of base skills and haste of transition from reproductive to productive kinds of work. 19

· Absence of good practical recommendations on elimination and the prevention of gaps in pupils' knowledge and skills. · Weakness of existing system of appreciation of pupils' work. · Spontaneity of a choice and application of evident support, their low didactic efficiency. Researches of methods of teaching have shown, that all named problems will effectively solved, if we apply elaborations of various innovators for amplification of a traditional technique of teaching that can increase essentially quality of teaching foreign language. Imperfection of the existing approach to teaching foreign language in the high school, which is focused only on communicative purposes to the detriment of such kinds of language activity as reading and the writing, that has led to the low level of knowing a foreign language of graduates of secondary school. Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a science, and like all sciences, it has a set of underlying principles upon which it is based. However, unlike the better-known sciences such as biology, chemistry and physics, TEFL is not quantifiable to the point of being either objective or equation based in its approach. Therefore, TEFL, like psychology and sociology, must rely on subjectivity in order to formulate its principles. These principles, in turn, define the relationships that exist between either the teacher and the student or the student and other students. In order to teach English effectively, an EFL teacher must subscribe to one of the current approaches to teaching English as a foreign language and incorporate its language-learning strategies and techniques into each of his or her lessons. What follows are descriptions of nine of the principle approaches to teaching English as a foreign (second) language. Without doubt, the reader will have experienced one or more of these approaches in his or her own classroom learning history. Though there is no one correct approach, most teachers usually 20

find themselves more comfortable using one or the other of the approaches listed and described. Though there is nothing overtly wrong with this, it must be remembered that students differ greatly, not just in age but also in mentality, thus they may respond differently to any given approach to language teaching. Because of different learning styles, the effective teacher must be prepared to adapt his or her teaching to the needs and preferences of each class. Our advice is to 'find yourself' with respect to the approaches listed below. That said, don't be afraid to experiment with and/or adapt your style of teaching. In the end, you may discover that the best approach is eclectic in nature and includes bits of this and bits of that. So as to give some depth of understanding as to the evolution of ideas that has marked the emergence of newer and different approaches to language teaching, we have tried to place the following list of methodological approaches in chronological order. Latin and Ancient Greek are known as "dead languages", based on the fact that people no longer speak them for the purpose of interactive communication. Yet they are still acknowledged as important languages to learn for the purpose of gaining access to classical literature, and up until fairly recently, for the kinds of grammar training that led to the "mental dexterity" considered so important in any higher education study stream.It is hard to decide which is more surprising the fact that this method has survived right up until today, or the fact that what was essentially a method developed for the study of "dead" languages involving little or no spoken communication or listening comprehension is still used for the study of languages that are very much "alive" and require competence not only in terms of reading, writing and structure, but also speaking, listening and interactive 21

communication. 9 At the beginning of XX-th century there was also another problem. That was the problem of method. It was quite natural, since after the October Revolution of 1917 “new” school demanded the application of new techniques. At that time, advocated directmethod. It was believed that this method was based on a correct principle - associating foreign words with the objects themselves. This was the method of naturallearning a foreign language, which was the most economical, fastest- reaching goal. Why is this being promoted direct method, when the West is having the idea of mixed method? This was due to several reasons. First, in the royal schools dominated the grammar-translation and textual-translation methods based on cramming, from which it was necessary to be free. Direct same method against them was more progressive, as proceeded from the living language of speech training, as the primary means of language functioning. Secondly, only direct method of instruction intended to communicate. Thirdly, education was not familiar with the proposals of other methods that have arisen in the West after the World War I, because this war, and then the civil, broke all contact. In structure - based instructional environments, the language is taught to a group of second or foreign language learners. The focus is on the language itself, rather than on the messages carried by the language. The teacher's goal is to see to it that students learn the vocabulary and grammatical rules of the target language. Some students in structure-based classes may have opportunities to continue learning the target language outside the classroom; for others, classroom is the only contact with that language. pass an examination rather than to use the language for daily communicative interaction beyond the classroom. Communicative, content-based, and task-based instructional environments also involve learners whose goal is learning the language itself, but the style of instruction places rhe emphasis on interaction, conversation, and language use, rather than on learning about the language. The topics that are discussed in communicative and task-based instructional environments are often of general interest to the learner, for example, how to reply to a classified advertisement from newspaper. In content-based instruction, the focus of a lesson is usually on the subject matter, such as. history or mathematics, which students are learning through the medium of the second language. In these classes, the focus may occasionally be on the language itself, but the emphasis is on using the language rather than talking about it. The language that teachers use for teaching is not selected solely for the purpose of teaching a specific feature of the language, but also to make sure learners have the language they need to interact in a variety of contexts. Students' success in these courses is often measured in terms of their ability to 'get things done' in the second language rather than on their accuracy in using certain grammatical features. 1.3 MAIN FEATURES OF METHODS AND TECHNIQUES As mentioned earlier, many modern techniques are communicatively- oriented, and one of their most important aim is to teach communication and ownership of speech means. Each of the techniques uses different tools, methods and principles. That is, each technique has distinctive specific features Communicative method The very first specific feature of the communicative method is that the purpose of education is not mastery of a foreign language, but “foreign language culture”, which includes cognitive, educational, developmental and educational 23

aspect. These aspects include the introduction and study of not only the language and grammar, but also its culture, its relationship with the native culture, as well as the failure of a foreign language, its nature, characteristics, similarities and differences with their own language. They also include the satisfaction of personal cognitive interests' trainee in any of its activities. The latter provides an additional motivation to study a foreign language by students, who is not interested. The second specific feature of the communicative approach is to capture all aspects of foreign language culture through communication. This communicative method first put forward the proposition that the communication should be taught only through communication that was for modern methods of one of the characteristic features. In the communicative teaching methodology communication serves as teaching, learning, development and education. Another feature of the proposed concept is the usage of all the functions of the situation. Communicative learning is based on situations which are understood as a system of relationships. The main emphasis here is put not to play with the help of visual aids or a verbal description of the fragments of reality, and to create a situation as a system of relationships between the trainees. Discussion on the situation, based on the relationship of trainees, can make learning a foreign language culture as possible natural and close to the conditions of real communication.Communicative methodology also includes the acquisition and non-verbal means of communication: such as gestures, facial expressions, posture, distance, which is an additional factor in memorizing vocabulary and any other material. A specific feature of the communicative approach is the use of conditional speech exercises, that is, those exercises that are based on full or partial repetition of the remarks of the teacher. As you gain knowledge and skills of the character of conditional speech exercises become increasingly complex, while the need for them does not exhaust yourself when statements trainees do not become self-sufficient and meaningful. Project methodology 24

The effectiveness of the project techniques is provided to a greater extent by the intellectual and emotional richness of the education topics. Also we should note their gradual complication. But the distinctive feature is the fact of their concrete. From the outset of training the trainees are expected to participate in meaningful and complex communication, without simplification and primitivism. The other distinguishing feature of the project methodology is a particular form of communicative and cognitive organization of students in draft form. That, indeed, appeared the name of the method. The project is an independent, implemented by the trainees' work, in which verbal communication is woven into the intellectual and emotional context of other activities.The novelty of the approach is that the trainees are given the opportunity by designing the content of communications, starting with the first class. The course has a little number of texts. They are reproduced in the work of trainees on projects proposed by the authors. Each project is related to a specific topic and is developed within a certain time. Subject has a clear structure, is divided into subtopics, each of which ends with the task of project work. Particularly important is the fact that students have the opportunity to talk about their thoughts, their plans. Thanks to the work on the project creates a strong language base. The specific skills are also a division into two types: learning to learn languages and skills of language users. For the development of the first kind of skills phonetic and lexical-grammatical exercises of training nature are used. These are exercises in imitation, substitution, expansion, transformation, restoration of individual phrases and texts. Their peculiarity is that they are given in an interesting way: as a text to check the memory, attention, games conjecture; puzzles, sometimes in the form of a soundtrack. Education grammatical skills and their training are usually conducted in the form of work based on the tables. All the exercises, most importantly, are running on the background of the development project submitted. To practice in using language a large number of situations is given created by using verbal and object- like clarity. The obvious here is that the specific features of the communicative and projective techniques have many 25

similarities, are built on identical principles, but apply them in different ways of learning. In the first case the study is based on the use of situations, in the second - on the use of the projects. Intensive method We now turn to the intensive method and consider its specificity. This method is based on the psychological term of “suggestion”. This is the first specific feature of intensive techniques. The use of suggestion can pass or shoot various types of psychological barriers in the trainees the following way. The teacher conducts classes in the light of psychological factors, emotional impact, using the logical form of training. It is also used in the classroom various art forms (music, painting, elements of the theater) to the emotional impact on students. However suggestopedia training involves a concentration of training hours. At the senior stages, for example, it is advisable to devote six hours a week through the school component of the curriculum; they should be divided into three, two hours each. If necessary, the number of hours can be reduced to three. Also, a specific feature of the intensive method is that suggestopedia widely based on the position of the different functions of the two hemispheres of the brain. Connecting the emotional factors in learning a foreign language will significantly intensify the process of learning, opening new perspectives in the development of methods of teaching foreign languages. The whole atmosphere of classes organized in such a way that the development of language is accompanied by positive emotions. On the one hand, this is an important incentive to create and sustain interest in the subject. On the other hand, the intellectual activity of students, backed by emotional activity, provides the most efficient memorization of material and mastery of speaking skills. Another distinguishing factor is the active use of role-playing games . Specifics of intensive training are laying in the fact that the educational communication keeps all socio-psychological processes of communication. Role dialogue - is both a play and learning, and speech activity. But in this case, if the position of students is role-play game communication - play activity or natural 26

communication, where the motive is not in the content of activities, but outside it, from a teacher role-play game dialogue is a form of organization of educational process. 10 According to L.G. Denisova, the main efficient moments of interactive methods of teaching foreign languages are: - creation of a strong motivation for immediate study, carried out with casual conversation and motivating communication closer to reality; - high and immediate impact of t raining: on the second day of classes, students interact in the target foreign language, using verbal clich й s inherent in the core of training text - remember, the text of polylogue introduced for the first day of school; - the presentation and the acquisition of a large quantity of speech, lexical and grammatical units; for one presentation 150-200 new words, 30-50 verbal clich й s and a few typical grammatical phenomena are introduced and assimilated. This is also, of course, a specific feature. CHAPTER II. The role of CLT in teaching vocabulary to A2 level learners 2.1. The usage of Communicative Language Teaching in enhancing A2 learners Vocabulary Accordingly, foreign language learners may use various strategies to acquire the target language word knowledge. Taking this into consideration, second and foreign language researchers have made various attempts to classify vocabulary learning strategies employed by foreign and second language learners. Vocabulary is taught easily when appropriate method is used. Obviously, Communicative Language Teaching approach is one of the best methods of developing vocabulary. 10 Caine, R. N., & Caine, G. Communicative language teaching syllabus organizes the teaching according to the notional and functional categories of language rather than according to its structures.It concentrates on the following: Interactions: using language to communicate, Tasks: using language to perform meaningful tasks Learner: puting the learner’s interesets, needs in the forefront. There are many advantages in teaching according to the communicative approach: CLT is a holistic appraoch. It doesn’t focus only on the traditional structural syllabus. It takes into consideration communicative dimension of language. CLT provides vitality and motivation within the classroom. CLT is a learner centered approach. It capitalizes on the interests and needs of the learner. In a world where communication of information and information technology have broken new considerable ground, CLT can play an important role in education.The communicative approach in language teaching starts from a theory of language as communication . The goal of language teaching is to develop what Hymes referred to as "communicative competence ." Hymes coined this term in order to contrast a communica tive view of language and Chomsky's theory of competence. Chomsky held that linguistic theory is concerned primarily with an ideal speaker-listener in a completely homogeneous speech community, who knows its language perfectly and is unaffected by such grammatically irrelevant conditions as mem ory limitation, distractions, shifts of attention and interest, and errors in applying his knowledge of the language in actual performance. For Chomsky, the focus of linguistic theory was to characterize the abstract abilities speakers possess that enable them to produce gram matically correct sentences in a language. Hymes held that such a view of linguistic theory was sterile, that linguistic theory needed to be seen as part of a more general theory incorporating communication and culture. Hymes's theory of communicative competence was a definition of what a speaker needs to know in order to be communicatively com petent in a speech community . In Hymes's view, a person 28

who acquires communicative competence acquires both knowledge and ability for language use with respect to 1. whether (and to what degree) something is formally possible; 2. whether (and to what degree) something is feasible in virtue of the means of implementation available; 3. whether (and to what degree) something is appropriate (adequate, happy, successful) in relation to a context in which it is used and evaluated; 4. whether (and to what degree) something is in fact done, actually per formed, and what its doing entails. This theory of what knowing a language entails offers a much more comprehensive view than Chomsky's view of competence, which deals primarily with abstract grammatical knowledge.Another linguistic theory of communication favored in CLT is Halliday's functional account of language use. "Linguistics ... is concerned... with the description of speech acts or texts, since only through the study of language in use are all the functions of language, and therefore all components of meaning, brought into focus". In a number of influential books and papers, Halliday has elaborated a powerful theory of the functions of language , which complements Hymes's view of commu nicative competence for many writers on CLT. He described seven basic functions that language performs for children learning their first language: 1. the instrumental function: using language to get things; 2. the regulatory function: using language to control the behaviour of others; 3. the interactional function: using language to create interaction with others; 4. the personal function: using language to express personal feelings and meanings; 5. the heuristic function: using language to learn and to discover; 6. the imaginative function: using language to create a world of the imagination; 7. the representational function: using language to communicate information. Learning a second language was similarly viewed by proponents of Communicative Language Teaching as acquiring the linguistic means to perform different kinds of functions.At the level of language theory, Communicative 29

Language Teaching has a rich, if somewhat eclectic, theoretical base. Some of the characteristics of this communicative view of language follow. 1. Language is a system for the expression of meaning. 2. The primary function of language is for interaction and communication. 3. The structure of language reflects its functional and communicative uses. 4. The primary units of language are not merely its grammatical and struc tural features, but categories of functional and communicative meaning as exemplified in discourse. In contrast to the amount that has been written in Communicative Language Teaching literature about communicative dimensions of language, little has been written about learning theory. Neither Brumfit and Johnson nor Littlewood, for example, offers any discus sion of learning theory. Elements of an underlying learning theory can be discerned in some CLT practices, however. One such element might be described as the communication principle : Activities that involve real communication promote learning . A second element is the task principle : Activities in which language is used for carrying out meaningful tasks promote learning . A third element is the meaningfulness principle: Language that is meaningful to the learner supports the learn ing process . Learning activities are consequently selected according to how well they engage the learner in meaningful and authentic language use. These principles, we suggest, can be inferred from CLT practices. They address the conditions needed to promote second language learning, rather than the processes of language acquisition. More recent accounts of Communicative Language Teaching, however, have attempted to describe theories of language learning processes that are compatible with the communicative approach. Saving non surveys second language acquisition research as a source for learning theories and considers the role of linguistic, social, cognitive, and in dividual variables in language acquisition. Other theorists have developed theories cited as compatible with the principles of CLT . Krashen sees acquisition as the basic process involved in developing language proficiency and distinguishes this proc ess from learning. Acquisition 30

refers to the unconscious development of the target language system as a result of using the language for real communication. Learning is the conscious representation of grammatical knowledge that has resulted from instruction, and it cannot lead to acquisition. It is the acquired system that we call upon to create utter ances during spontaneous language use. The learned system can serve only as a monitor of the output of the acquired system. Krashen and other second language acquisition theorists typically stress that language learning comes about through using language communicatively, rather than through practicing language skills. Johnson and Littlewood consider an alternative learning theory that they also see as compatible with CLT-a skill-learning model of learning. According to this theory, the acquisition of communicative competence in a language is an example of skill development. This involves both a cognitive and a behavioral aspect: The cognitive aspect involves the internalization of plans for creating appro - priate behavior. For language use, these plans derive mainly from the language system — they include grammatical rules, procedures for selecting vocabulary, and social conventions governing speech. The behavioral aspect involves the automation of these plans so that they can be converted into fluent performance in real time. This occurs mainly through practice in con verting plans into performance. Communicative Language Teaching is best considered an approach rather than a method. Thus although a reasonable degree of theoretical con sistency can be discerned at the levels of language and learning theory, at the levels of design and procedure there is much greater room for individual interpretation and variation than most methods permit . It could be that one version among the various proposals for syllabus models, exercise types, and classroom activities may gain wider approval in the future, giving Communicative Language Teaching a status similar to other teaching methods. On the other hand, divergent interpretations might lead to homogeneous subgroups.Communicative Language Teaching appeared at a time when British 31

language teaching was ready for a paradigm shift. Situational Language Teaching was no longer felt to reflect a methodology appropriate for the seventies and beyond. CLT appealed to those who sought a more humanistic approach to teaching, one in which the interactive processes of communication received priority . The rapid adoption and implemen tation of the communicative approach also resulted from the fact that it quickly assumed the status of orthodoxy in British language teaching circles, receiving the sanction and support of leading British applied linguists, language specialists, publishers, as well as institutions, such as the British Council. 2.2. The role of Vocabulary in language learning What is vocabulary? Vocabulary can be defined, roughly, as the words we teach in the foreign language. However, a new item of vocabulary may be more than a single word: for example, post office and mother-in-law, which are made up of two or three words but express a single idea. There are also multi-word idioms such as call it a day, where the meaning of the phrase cannot be deduced from an analysis of the component words. A useful convention is to cover all such cases by talking about vocabulary "items" rather than 'words'. The vocabulary, therefore, must be carefully selected in accordance with the principles of selecting linguistic material, the conditions of teaching and learning a foreign language in school. Scientific principles of selecting vocabulary have been worked out. The words selected should be: - frequently used in the language (the frequency of the word may be determined mathematically by means of statistic data); S easily combined (nice room, nice girl, nice weather); `f unlimited from the point of view of style (oral, written); included in the topics the syllabus sets; S valuable from the point of view of word- building (use, used, useful, useless, usefully, user, usage). 32

The first principle, word frequency, is an example of a purely linguistic approach to word selection. It is claimed to be the soundest criterion because it is completely objective. It is derived by counting the number of occurrences of word's appearing in representative printed material comprising novels, essays, plays, poems, newspapers, textbooks, and magazines. Modern tendency is to apply this principle depending on the language activities to be developed. For developing reading skills pupils need "reading vocabulary", thus various printed texts are analyzed from the point of view of word frequency. For developing speaking skills pupils need "speaking vocabulary". In this case the material for analysis is the spoken language recorded. The occurrences of words are counted in it and the words more frequently used in speaking are selected. The other principles are of didactic value, they serve teaching aims. The words selected may be grouped under the following two classes: Words that we talk with or form words which make up the form (structure) of the language. Words that we talk about or content words. In teaching vocabulary for practical needs both structural words and content words are of great importance. That is why they are included in the vocabulary minimum. The number of words and phraselogical units the syllabus sets for a pupil to assimilate is 1100 words. The selection of the vocabulary although important is not the teacher's chief concern. It is only the "what" of-teaching and is usually prescribed for him by textbooks and study-guides he uses. The teacher's concern is "how" to get his pupils to assimilate the vocabulary prescribed. This is a difficult problem and it is still in the process of being solved. It is generally known that school leavers' vocabulary Is poor. They have trouble with hearing, speaking, reading, and writing. One of the reasons is poor teaching of vocabulary. The teacher should bear in mind that a word is considered to be learned when: - it is spontaneously recognized while auding and reading; - it is correctly used in speech, i. е ., the right word in the right place. 33

It is known, words are elements of the language used in the act of communication. They are single units, and as such cannot provide the act of communication by themselves; they can provide it only when they are combined in a certain way. There are some rules for the teachers concerning teaching vocabulary. Rule 1 for the teacher; While teaching pupils vocabulary, introduce words in sentence patterns in different situations of intercourse. Present the words in keeping with the structures to be taught. Information is composed of two kinds of elements: simple (words) and complicated (sentences). A word may be both a whole which consists of elements (speech sounds) and at the same time an element which is included in a whole (a sentence). In teaching words attention should be given both to a word as an element (in sentences) and a word as a whole (isolated unit) with the purpose of its analysis. Rule 2 for the teacher: Present the word as an element, i.e., in a sentence pattern first. Then fix it in the pupils' memory through different exercises in sentence patterns and phrase patterns. Speech is taken in by ear and reproduced by the organs of speech. In teaching pupils vocabulary both the ear and the organs of speech should take an active part in the assimilation of words. Pupils should have ample practice in hearing words and pronouncing them not only as isolated units but in various sentences in which they occur. Rule 3 for the teacher: While introducing a word, teacher must pronounce it her himrself in a context, and ask pupils to pronounce it both individually and in unison in a context, too. Any word in the language has very complicated linguistic relations with other words in pronunciation, meaning, spelling, and usage. Rule 4 for the teacher: For teaching words it is necessary to establish a memory bond between a new word and those already covered. 34

For instance: see — sea; too — two; one — won (in pronunciation); answer — reply; answer — ask; small — little (in meaning); bought — brought; caught — taught; night-right (in spelling); to fight somebody - to doubt something - to mention something (similar word combination). Hence there are two stages in teaching vocabulary: presentation or explanation, retention or consolidation which are based on certain psycholinguistic factors (for that see works by Leontiev A. A.). 1 The process of learning a word means to the pupil: ' identification of concepts, i. e.,1earning what the word means; ' pupil's activity for the purpose of retaining the word; ' pupil's activity in using this word in the process of communication in different situations. Accordingly, the teacher's role in this process is: ' to furnish explanation, i. е ., to present the word, to get his pupils to identify the concept correctly; ^ to get them to recall or recognize the word by means of different exercises; to stimulate pupils to use the words in speech. Teaching and learning words are carried on through methods you are familiar with; the teacher organizes learning and pupils are involved in the very process of learning, i. e. in the acquisition of information about a new word, its form, meaning and usage; in drill and transformation to form lexical habits; in making use of the lexical habits in hearing, speaking and reading, or in language skills. Various tech niques are used to attain the goal — to fix the words in pupils' memory ready to be used whenever they need them. Presentation of new words. Since every word has its form, meaning, and usage to present a word means to introduce to pupils its forms (phonetic, graphic, structural, and grammatical) and to explain its meaning, and usage. The techniques of teaching pupils the pronunciation and spelling of a word are as follows: pure or conscious imitation; analogy; transcription; 35

rules of reading. Since a word consists of sounds if heard or spoken and letters if read or written the teacher shows the pupils how to pronounce, to read, and write it. However the approach may vary depending on the task set (the latter depends on the age of pupils, their progress in the language, the type of words, etc.). For example, if the teacher wants his pupils to learn the word orally first, he instructs them to recognize it when hearing and to articulate the word as an isolated element (a book) and in a sentence pattern or sentence patterns alongside with other words. (This is a book. Give me the book. Take the book Put the book on the table, etc.) As far as the form is concerned the pupils have but two difficulties to overcome: to learn how to pronounce the word both separately and in speech; and to recognize it in sentence patterns pronounced by the teacher, by his classmates, or by a speaker in case the tape-recorder is used. If the teacher wants his pupils to learn the word during the same lesson not only for hearing and speaking but for reading and writing as well, he shows them how to write and read it after they perform oral exercises and can recognize and pronounce the word. The pupils read the word and put it down in their notebooks. In this case the pupils have two more difficulties to overcome: to learn how to write and how to read the word; the latter is connected with their ability to associate letters with sounds in a proper way. Later when pupils have learned the English alphabet and acquired some skills in spelling and reading they may be told to copy the new words into their exercise-books and read and write them independently; this work being done mainly as homework. The teacher then has his pupils perform various oral exercises during the lesson, he makes every pupil pronounce the new words in sentence patterns and use them in speech. Since this is the most difficult part of work in vocabulary assimilation it can and must be done during the lesson and under the teacher's supervision. 36

There are two ways of conveying the meaning of words: direct way and translation. The direct way of presenting the words of a foreign language brings the learner into direct contact with them, the mother tongue does not come in between, it establishes links between a foreign word and the thing or the concept directly. The direct way of conveying the meaning of foreign words is usually used when the words denote things, objects, their qualities, sometimes, gestures and movements, which can be shown to and seen by pupils, for example: a book, a table, red, big, take, stand up, etc. The teacher should connect the English word he presents with the object, the notion it denotes directly, without the use of pupils' mother tongue. There a lot of different techniques for teaching vocabulary that the teacher can use in practice. Now let us stop at the some of them the teacher may exploit while working with English language. 1. Brainstorming round an idea. Write a single word in the centre of the board, and ask students to brainstorm all the words they can think of that are connected with it. Every item that is suggested is written up on the board with a line connecting it to the original word, so that the end result is a 'sun-ray' effect. For example, the word tree might produce something like the sketch below. This activity is mainly for revising words the class already knows, but new ones may be introduced, by the teacher or by students. Although there are no sentences or paragraphs, the circle of associated items is in itself a meaningful context for the learning of new vocabulary. The focus is on the meaning of isolated items. This kind of association exercise is useful when introducing a poem or other literature: a key concept can be placed in the centre, and the brainstorm used as a 'warm-up' to the theme, as well as a framework for the introduction of some new vocabulary. 37

2.3. Vocabulary teaching strategies According to Gu and Johnson, vocabulary learning strategies are subdivided into cognitive, metacognitive, memory and activation strategies. They further contended that these strategies are classified into various substrategies based upon which cognitive strategies include competent use of dictionaries, guessing and note-taking strategies. Learners who are able to use guessing strategies bring their background knowledge into play and utilize linguistic cues to guess the meaning of a word Brainstorming Brainstorming is a combination of a relaxed, informal approach to problemsolving and lateral thinking. People are asked to find ideas and thoughts that can at first seem to be a bit irrelevant. The idea is to use some of these ideas to form original, creative solutions to problems. Even some seemingly useless ideas can spark still more ideas. The goal of brainstorming is to direct people to new ways ofthinking and break from the usual way of reasoning.The most important thing about brainstorming is that there should be no criticism of ideas. Students try to open up possibilities and discard wrong assumptions about the limits of the problem. Judgments and analysis of ideas are explored after the brainstorming process while focus should be at this stage on idea generation. What comes to your mind?(cluster) 38

Give the groups a task which requires a group solution. While finding a solution group members discuss various ideas and try to find a compromise. This is a good example of a communicative activity where participants in the discussion use English to find the solution. Language is the best means of communication. In the modern globalization era it is not enough to be able to speak one language to communicate with the 40

outside world. I strongly support the idea that children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school. They faster become familiar with a strange language, improve their hearing ability to understand new words as time goes by and learn new words. If their pupils already have some knowledge of English, the teacher more often than not has recourse to a reading book, and causes his pupils to read - with or without the process of translation. Or, if a command of the spoken language is the objective, they content themselves with carrying on «conversation» with their pupils. In the latter case such teachers find themselves at a loss. The various techniques of teaching through conversation are usually unknown to them and, like the veterans who came into this field before them, they pick up the devices of oral teaching by dint of the process of trial and error. Also I consider my task to show how these methods work, so there are examples, which are in the practical part of the work. My work consists of different tips, which can help teachers to work with children and adults. Psychological peculiarities of children and adults are describing in this work. Teachers consider which strategies fit most smoothly with the content they teach and the developmental level of the students. Research studies show that we remember new words much more easily if we think about them in relation to our own experience and use them in acontext that is meaningful to us as individuals. So, as well as doing the exercises in vocabulary within or outside the lesson, learners have to write any new words and phrases that they particularly wish to learn in a context that has meaning for them. They could, for example , use language units in a sentence about what they have had personally, or about a story they have read in newspaper or magazine or about a film they have watched. It helps to revise the vocabulary they have and making the words personal and more memorable.Unlike the learning of grammar, which is a rule-based system,vocabulary knowledge is mostly a question of accumulating separate items. To facilitate vocabulary teaching in A 2 level classes there have been several techniques provided by linguists and methodologists. Traditionally, vocabulary has been taught with a word list, L1 meanings, example sentences, definitions, antonyms and synonyms. Though traditional way of vocabulary teaching has been criticized therefore many scholars have suggested various modern vocabulary teaching techniques for A2 level learners. It is obvious that children learn a wide range of vocabulary to communicate with others in context.In order to contextualize the vocabulary teachers need to use different techniques to teach it. The foremost common techniques to teach university students vocabulary are by real things (realia), actions (gesture), pictures (illustrations, posters), songs, storytelling, games, using readings, etc.Different linguists provide different reason to illustrate why these techniques are useful in A2 classes. For instance, realia is one of the most useful ways to teach vocabulary because it uses “authentic material”. Wright refers to realia in these terms: “Objects (sometimes called ‘realia’) are an ideal way of showing the meaning of English words for concreting things”. In other words, realia is the use of real objects such as toys to teach animals or plastic or real fruits and vegetables to teach food. It involves students using their senses by touching, smelling and seeing. Another technique usingpictures also have been considered the most common technique to teach vocabulary. Pictures could be designed by the 42

teacher.Additionally, I recommend that stories can be used as a source to motivate children to learn. An EFL teacher can use the favorite story in the learner‘s mother tongue and translate it into English in order to catch learner‘s attention. From all above-stated it is possible to draw the following conclusions. The purpose of this work was to discover the most effective ways of teaching a foreign language to pupils . For achievement of the purpose the works of uzbek and foreign authors on the given problem have been studied. In formation of interest to a subject the huge role is played by the person of the teacher. Therefore a pledge of successful mastering a foreign language by the pupils is professionalism of the teacher which should in the work not only take into account the methodical principles underlying teaching, but also to be in constant search of new receptions and means of teaching which will recover a lesson, will make it fascinating, cognitive and remembered. The most useful for this purpose are the following receptions and methods: methods of constructivism, communicative methods, methods of projects and discussions, games and role games, etc. In my work have been analysed all these methods and the receptions raising quality of training to foreign language on the basis of studying of various techniques of teaching, used in work with pupils. Many of receptions can be applied with success at teaching children of younger and more advanced age. Teachers consider which strategies fit most smoothly with the content they teach and the developmental level of the students.
