Introduction Why is it helpful to identify patterns of academic grammar and punctuation usage? Without grammar we cannot learn any language . So grammar is the main step when you want to acquire a foreign language. English Grammar Today is an up- to-date guide to the grammar of modern English. It is useful for all users of English but in particular for learners of English at an intermediate to upper-intermediate level (CEF B1–C1). It will also be helpful to teachers of English looking for clear explanations and real examples. English Grammar Today is a reference book with accompanying CD-ROM. Together they provide a range of grammatical explanations from basic points, such as how we form questions in English, to more advanced points, such as how to use particular words and phrases to apologise, to address people, to be polite, to agree with others or to respond to what is said. They include key features of grammar, such as adjective, adverb, noun, determiner, ellipsis, main clause, future, conjunction, as well as individual words and pairs of words which are commonly confused, such as above/over and make/do.The book and CD-ROM also cover more general topics, such as slang, dialect, formality, spelling and punctuation, abbreviations, geographical names and telling the time. The emphasis is on standard modern British English although it does discuss some differences between British and American English and contains valuable information about American English. English Grammar Today contains a lot of information about the grammar of spoken English and the CD-ROM enables you to listen to all the examples of sentences and dialogues from the book. We think it is important to hear as well as read grammar. 2

As well as almost 400 main sections in the book there are an additional 197 sections on the CD-ROM. There is also an English Grammar Today Workbook which contains a range of tasks and exercises (with answers) which help you to practise the most important features of grammar and usage covered in English Grammar Today. Grammar is the set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given natural language. The term refers also to the study of such rules, and this field includes phonology, morphology, and syntax, often complemented by phonetics, semantics, and pragmatics. Speakers of a language variety have a set of internalized rules for using that form of speech, and these rules constitute that lect's grammar. The vast majority of the information in the grammar is – at least in the case of one's native language – acquired not by conscious study or instruction, but by observing other speakers. Much of this work is done during early childhood; learning a language later in life usually involves a greater degree of explicit instruction. Thus, grammar is the cognitive information underlying language use. The term " grammar" can also be used to describe the rules that govern the linguistic behavior of a group of speakers. The term "English grammar", therefore, may have several meanings. It may refer to the whole of English grammar, that is, to the grammars of all the speakers of the language, in which case, the term encompasses a great deal of variation. Alternatively, it may refer only to what is common to the grammars of all, or of the vast majority of English speakers (such as subject–verb– object word order in simple declarative sentences). Or it may refer to the rules of a particular, relatively well-defined variety of English (such as standard English for a particular region).7iginated in Iron Age India, with Yaska (6th century BC), Pāṇini (6-5th century BC ) and his commentators Pingala (c. 200 BC), Katyayana, and 6

The Babylonians also made some early attempts at language description. 2 In the West, grammar emerged as a discipline in Hellenism from the 3rd century BC forward with authors like Rhyanus and Aristarchus of Samothrace. The oldest known grammar handbook is the Art of Grammar a succinct guide to speaking and writing clearly and effectively, written by the ancient Greek scholar Dionysius Thrax (c. 170–c. 90 BC), a student of Aristarchus of Samothrace who established a school on the Greek island of Rhodes. Dionysius Thrax's grammar book remained the primary grammar textbook for Greek schoolboys until as late as the twelfth century AD. The Romans based their grammatical writings on it and its basic format remains the basis for grammar guides in many languages even today. Belonging to the trivium of the seven liberal arts, grammar was taught as a core discipline throughout the Middle Ages, following the influence of authors from Late Antiquity, such as Priscian. Treatment of vernaculars began gradually during the High Middle Ages, with isolated works such as the First Grammatical Treatise, but became influential only in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Grammars of non-European languages began to be compiled for the purposes of evangelization and Bible translation from the 16th century onward, such as Grammatica o Arte de la Lengua General de los Indios de los Reynos del Perú (1560), and a Quechua grammar by Fray Domingo de Santo Tomás. From the latter part of the 18th century, grammar came to be understood as a subfield of the emerging discipline of modern linguistics. The Deutsche Grammatik of the Jacob Grimm was first published in the 1810s. The Comparative Grammar of Franz Bopp, the starting point of modern comparative linguistics, came out in 1833.pause and assimilate information. They are also used to separate the items in a series. A semi-colon links independent clauses that are closely related in meaning when they are not linked by a conjunction. A colon introduces a list or a summation. It can also be used to link an idea that has been introduced in an independent clause. 8

End punctuation – period, question mark, and exclamation mark – denotes the end of a sentence. Parentheses enclose words that are not directly related to the main thought of the sentence but provide important information, or to provide examples. A dash signals a sudden change of thought or break in a sentence. Dashes can also be used in place of parentheses to emphasize information. Quotation marks indicate direct speech. All punctuation marks are enclosed within the quotation marks except for semi-colons, colons, and question marks when they are not part of the quotation. An apostrophe indicates that letters are missing from a contraction, or shows possession (i.e., that one thing belongs to another). The word (its) spelled without an apostrophe is a possessive; spelled with an apostrophe (it’s) is a contraction of it is. Similarly, whose is a possessive pronoun, and who’s is a contraction of who is. Do not use an apostrophe to form the plural of numbers or letters (the 1990s, a box of PCs). Capitalization Like punctuation, capitalization helps convey information. The first word of every sentence is capitalized, signaling that a new sentence has begun. Proper nouns – the name of a particular person, place, or thing – are capitalized to indicate uniqueness. However, it is not correct to use capitalization merely to make a word look or seem important. The Importance of Grammar Grammar is important because it provides information that helps the reader’s comprehension. It is the structure that conveys precise meaning from the writer to the 9

Generative grammar is a linguistic theory that regards grammar as a system of rules that generates exactly those combinations of words that form grammatical sentences in a given language. Noam Chomsky first used the term in relation to the theoretical linguistics of grammar that he developed in the late 1950s.[1] Linguists who follow the generative approach have been called generativists. The generative school has focused on the study of syntax and addressed other aspects of a language's structure, including morphology and phonology.Early versions of Chomsky's theory were called transformational grammar, a term still used to include his subsequent theories,[2] the most recent of which is the minimalist program theory: Chomsky and other generativists have argued that many of the properties of a generative grammar arise from a universal grammar that is innate to the human brain, rather than being learned from the environment (see the poverty of the stimulus argument). There are a number of versions of generative grammar currently practiced within linguistics.A contrasting approach is that of constraint-based grammars. Where a generative grammar attempts to list all the rules that result in all well- formed sentences, constraint-based grammars allow anything that is not otherwise constrained. Certain versions of dependency grammar, head-driven phrase structure grammar, lexical functional grammar, categorial grammar, relational grammar, link grammar, and tree-adjoining grammar are constraint-based grammars that have been proposed. In stochastic grammar, grammatical correctness is taken as a probabilistic variable, rather than a discrete (yes or no) property.Generative grammars can be described and compared with the aid of the Chomsky hierarchy (proposed by Chomsky in the 1950s). This sets out a series of types of formal grammars with increasing expressive power. Among the simplest types are the regular grammars 10

(type 3); Chomsky claims that these are not adequate as models for human language, because of the allowance of the center-embedding of strings within strings, in all natural human languages. At a higher level of complexity are the context-free grammars (type 2). The derivation of a sentence by such a grammar can be depicted as a derivation tree. Linguists working within generative grammar often view such trees as a primary object of study. According to this view, a sentence is not merely a string of words. Instead, adjacent words are combined into constituents, which can then be further combined with other words or constituents to create a hierarchical tree-structure. The derivation of a simple tree-structure for the sentence "the dog ate the bone" proceeds as follows. The determiner the and noun dog combine to create the noun phrase the dog. A second noun phrase the bone is created with determiner the and noun bone. The verb ate combines with the second noun phrase, the bone, to create the verb phrase ate the bone. Finally, the first noun phrase, the dog, combines with the verb phrase, ate the bone, to complete the sentence: the dog ate the bone. The following tree diagram illustrates this derivation and the resulting structure: Basic english syntax : Such a tree diagram is also called a phrase marker. They can be represented more conveniently in text form, (though the result is less easy to read); in this format the above sentence would be rendered as: Chomsky has argued that phrase structure grammars are also inadequate for describing natural languages, and formulated the more complex system of transformational grammar. 11

Although Leonard Bloomfield, whose work Chomsky rejects, saw the ancient Indian grammarian Pāṇini as an antecedent of structuralism, Chomsky, in an award acceptance speech delivered in India in 2001, claimed "The first generative grammar in the modern sense was Panini's grammar". Generative grammar has been under development since the late 1950s, and has undergone many changes in the types of rules and representations that are used to predict grammaticality. In tracing the historical development of ideas within generative grammar, it is useful to refer to various stages in the development of the theory . Standard theory . The so-called standard theory corresponds to the original model of generative grammar laid out by Chomsky in 1965. A core aspect of standard theory is the distinction between two different representations of a sentence, called deep structure and surface structure. The two representations are linked to each other by transformational grammar. Extended standard theory (1965–1973) The so-called extended standard theory was formulated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Features are: -syntactic constraints -generalized phrase structures (X-bar theory) Revised extended standard theory (1973–1976) The so-called revised extended standard theory was formulated between 1973 and 1976. -restrictions upon X-bar theory (Jackendoff (1977)). -assumption of the complementizer position. Relational grammar (ca. 1975–1990) An alternative model of syntax based on the idea that notions like subject, direct object, and indirect object play a primary role in grammar. English grammar is notoriously difficult to learn for both native and second- language speakers. There are so many intricacies, obscure rules, and exceptions that it comes as no surprise that different generations of teachers have used various approaches to teaching grammar to train literate English writers. In the past, memorization-based techniques that relied on repetition slowly gave way to more creative methods. Today, we live in a society that prizes literacy and is willing to adapt to more effective methods to achieve the best results in teaching grammar. Diagramming Sentences One of the older forms of teaching grammar, diagramming sentences, first appeared in the 19th century. This method involves visually mapping the structures of and relationships between different aspects of a sentence. Especially helpful for visual learners, this method disappeared from modern teaching at least 30 years ago. Different forms of diagramming are used to visualize sentences, from the Reed- Kellogg System to dependency grammar, but all organize the functions of a sentence in a way that illustrates the grammatical relationships between words. More recently, diagramming sentences has had a small pop-culture resurgence in prints of famous opening sentences and websites that allow you to diagram to your heart’s content. 13

Learning Through Writing This method is often used in schools in the U.S. and Canada. Students are encouraged to explore language through creative writing and reading, picking up correct grammar usage along the way. If there are specific problems with certain grammatical rules, these are covered in a more structured lesson. An emphasis is now being placed upon language acquisition over language learning, as it has been observed that learning grammar by memorization does not work well and that students are better able to recognize and understand grammatical rules when lessons are more interactive (i.e., they have to apply these rules in their own writing). Repeated practice is also important and easily achieved through creative or personal writing exercises. This article, posted by The Atlantic, suggests that to better equip future adult writers, teachers in the 21st century should consider dropping outdated grammar teaching techniques in early education and opt for learning through writing techniques. Inductive gTeachin The inductive method of teaching grammar involves presenting several examples that illustrate a specific concept and expecting students to notice how the concept works from these examples. No explanation of the concept is given beforehand, and the expectation is that students learn to recognize the rules of grammar in a more natural way during their own reading and writing. Discovering grammar and visualizing how these rules work in a sentence allow for easier retention of the concept than if the students were given an explanation that was disconnected from examples of the concept. The main goal of the inductive teaching method is the retention of grammar concepts, with teachers using techniques that are known to work cognitively and make an impression on students’ contextual memory. 14

Deductive Teaching The deductive method of teaching grammar is an approach that focuses on instruction before practice. A teacher gives students an in-depth explanation of a grammatical concept before they encounter the same grammatical concept in their own writing. After the lesson, students are expected to practice what they have just been shown in a mechanical way, through worksheets and exercises. This type of teaching, though common, has many people—including teachers—rethinking such methods, as more post-secondary level students are revealing sub-par literacy skills in adulthood. As one former teacher states, deductive teaching methods drive many students away from writing because of the tediousness of rote learning and teacher- centered approaches. Interactive Teaching Another method of teaching grammar is to incorporate interactivity into lessons. Using games to teach grammar not only engages students but also helps them to remember what they’ve learned. This method allows teachers to tailor their lessons to the different learning styles of students. For instance, each student can be given a large flashcard with a word on it, and the students must physically arrange themselves into a proper sentence. Other games can include word puzzles or fun online quizzes. Over the years, many methods have been developed for teaching grammar and have been built upon, abandoned, or combined, all with the same goal in mind— teaching students how to communicate effectively and understand how to use the English language. Direct was criticized due to the following reasons:method Direct method is successful in private language schools because this method can be applied only in small classes where all the learners can get individual attention.In Direct method, the teachers extravagantly excel in keeping the mother tongue of the learners away from them. Direct method demands the learners to do oral communication in the second language and it also demands the pronunciation and accent to be just like the native speakers so there is need for the language school to hire the native speakers which actually can be very expensive. The success of the direct method depends on the teacher’s skills and personality more than on the methodology (Richards and Rodgers, 1986). Structural Approach The structural approach mainly employs the techniques of the direct method but the reading and writing skills are not wholly neglected. The structural approach is based on the sound principles of language learning. The structural approach says that the arrangement of the words in such a way as to form a suitable pattern and that pattern may make the meanings of the language clear to us. Any language has its own structure and skeleton which gives this language a decent appearance. A structure is a pattern and a particular arrangement of words which to indicate grammatical meanings. It may be a word, a phrase or a sentence (Gauridushi, 2011). Structural approach was criticized because it was only suitable for lower grades. Continuous teaching of structures and their repetition make the atmosphere dull and boring. It also neglected the reading and writing abilities and there was also a lack of skilled teachers (Sharma, 2011). Oral Approach/ Situational Language Teaching 22

The oral approach is a method in which children to use whatever hearing they get from their surroundings. They also take help from the context to understand and use language. The target is to develop the skills in the individual so that he can communicate and function independently. This approach helps in the development of reading and writing skills (Richards and Rodgers, 2001). The oral approach was developed from 1930s to the 1960s by British applied linguistics such as Harold Palmer and A.S. Hornsby. The main difference between oral approach and the direct method was that the methods which were developed under this approach had theoretical principles about the selection, grading and presentation of the content and material. This sequencing of the content would lead to better learning with a good knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical patterns. In this approach all the points of language were to be presented in “situations” which led to the second name of the approach i.e. situational language teaching. Although, the teachers are not aware of this approach today but it had long lasting impact on language learning. However, its focus on oral practice, grammar and sentence patterns is still supported by the teachers (ibid). Audiolingual Method Audiolingual method is also known as ‘Army Method’ because after the outbreak of World War II, the army soldiers decided to be proficient in the languages of their enemies. So a new learning method of foreign languages was discovered which is known as audiolingual method. This method is based on a linguistic theory and behavioral psychology. The audiolingual method was widely used in the 1950s and 1960s and the emphasis was not on the understanding of the words rather on acquisition of structures and patterns in common everyday dialogues (Richards and Rodgers, 2001). The teaching of the oral skills with accurate pronunciation, grammar and the ability to respond quickly and accurately is the main objective of audiolingual 23

method. Reading and writing skills may be taught but they are dependent on the oral skills (Richard and Rodgers, 1986). Total Physical Response In Total Physical Response (TPR), the teacher gives the students instructions and the students follow the instructions by using whole body responses. James J. Asher, a professor, of psychology at San Jose State University developed the method Total Physical Response in late 1960s to help in learning second languages (Richards and Rodgers, 2001). 24

1.2 The most common difficulties in teaching grammar. Different students can have different difficulties and problems in learning English. They can make different mistakes in English pronunciation, grammar, orthography and vocabulary usageEach learner has his own issues but the most common that I felt in my students are the following:- 1. Lack of vocabulary. 2.Grammar . 3.Correct pronunciation. 4.Hesitation in speaking. If we come to solution it will be easy to discuss it in the same sequence. 1.To improve vocabulary read an English language Newspaper. Reading habit will improve not only your vocabulary but also the sense of making sentences. 2.Gramar is not essential to learn a language but it is very basic to correct your language. Therefore, a Grammar book will be very helpful during the learning process .3.Listening an English channel will improve pronunciation skills. Some English cartoons are very helpful due to pace of speaking in them. Different characters speak very slow and you can understand every word they speak and it makes easy for you to correct your pronunciation. 25

4.Speak & speak is the rule to address this issue. Whether you speak wrong or right but don't give up speaking will end shyness which is a big hurdle in learning any language. Another idea is that the most common cause of the problems faced by a learner of the English language as a second language is existence of the inherent structure of their first language or mother tongue that they are exposed to since the first day. As such the problems that are faced by the students trying to learn the language are- 1. Understanding the grammar structure of the new language. 2. Pronunciations or the inability to understand or comprehend new words 3. Again they think of the reply in their mother tongue first and then form a reply by translating. 4. Vocabulary becomes a huge problem The above mentioned problems are just a few of other problems but in my opinion these are the major ones faced by students. The hardest for a teacher in this case is to actually create a new structure of the English grammar while trying not to dismantle the existing language structure of their mother tongue. The student should be able to use both the languages with ease. Again it is fairly easier in the case of children. Owl cation» A Challenges Encountered by Learners of English as a Second Language Learning a second language is never easy. Learning English as a second language is even less easy. Particularly if you are learning English outside of an English- speaking country. For instance, English language learners in African countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Zambia, Malawi, and some other African countries face a lot of challenges because English is not the native language of these countries. Just as 26

there are problems faced in learning English as foreign language, so there are challenges in learning English as second language. These English language learners often face the following challenges. 1. Unqualified Teachers This is the most significant and the most overlooked problem. What makes this problem so difficult to solve is that, since many communities are English language learners, they cannot determine who is a good English teacher and who isn't. Whatever the teacher says, whether correct or incorrect, will be taken as correct by the learner. This has led to a lot of confusion among learners because different teachers tell them different things. One of the main causes of this problem is the difficulty teachers have translating from their native languages. For instance, the word ‘cup’ is pronounced by different teachers as either [kap], [kop], or with a vowel sound that does not exist in English. For instance, the sound /Λ/ does not exist in the sound systems of many African languages, so even teachers sometimes have problems pronouncing it. 2. Limited Learning Environments When I talk about limited learning environments, I'm not referring to the weather, the availability of furniture in the classrooms, or the location of the school. While all of these factors can affect learning, in learning English, what happens outside of class matters most. In most cases, students only make an effort to speak proper English in the classroom when they are under supervision. Moreover, students don’t always hear people around them speaking proper English. As a result, it becomes more difficult to learn correct English. Learning materials refer to items that aid in the learning process. Books may be a necessary material, but books are not enough by themselves. Audio tools are also 27

needed. As observed above, if a student sees a sound symbol in a book, how does he/ she know how to pronounce it? The fact is, students of English Language graduate into teachers of the English language without ever getting to hear the correct pronunciation by a native speaker. Students also study haphazardly. They have books to read but they can’t tell how certain words are said. How would a student know how to pronounce the word ‘ewe’? He/she must hear the right pronunciation from his/her teacher or from a native speaker of English. Students tend to learn from movies they watch but they often learn the wrong things because movies contain slang and dialects that are not appropriate in many forms of communication. 4. Students Don't Take Their Study SeriouslyIn this case, students often think that the same English they speak at home or on the street is the same they will write in their exams. However, because communication doesn't have to be grammatically correct in order to be intelligible, students don’t always always abide by the rules they learned in school and therefore do not get fully educated and/or pass their tests. It is also the case that students don’t study English as much as they study other subjects. In most cases, students study English only in the classroom when the teacher is teaching. After the class, they drop their books and wait for the next class. They don’t study pronunciation, they don’t study essay writing, and they don’t make an effort to learn new words. They bring every little problem to the teacher during classes, even things they could just look it up in the dictionary. When learners make mistakes and are corrected, they often say “It is not my language after all.” This greatly affects their ability to learn English. Other Problems 28

Even with qualified teachers, adequate materials, and exposure to native English speakers, there are still a number of problems that any ESL student will face. 1. Over-Use of Native Language in the Classroom Students learn another language best when they're forced to use it. Teachers must be vigilant about requiring students to communicate in English and only in English— even if they're just talking to each other. If you know the students' native language, pretend in the classroom that you don't—as that will force them to make requests and respond to questions in English. This problem comes from the cultural demands of the family and society. 2. Students Become Too Dependent on the Teacher Part of learning anything means figuring out how to solve problems on your own. If a student goes to the teacher with every little problem s/he runs into, then the student will never be able to learn the language on their own. If students insist that they don't know how to say or do something on their own, they need to be reassured that they actually can with positive feedback and encouragement. 3. Strong Students Dominate the Class No matter how well students are sorted, there will still be differences in how much students know and how quickly they can learn. Setting the pace of the class to to keep up with the strongest students will leave the weaker ones behind. Weaker students shouldn't be forgotten in classroom discussions and activities. If you ask your friend to look after your dog, but you actually have seven dogs, your friend is in for a massive canine surprise. Making a mistake with plurals is sure to cause confusion anywhere, from social situations to research labs. That’s why it’s so important to learn the rules—especially for irregular English plurals, which are tricky for non-native speakers. In English, the standard way to form the plural is by adding the letter “s” to the end of a singular noun. One cat → Two cats One shoe → Two shoes One bath → Two baths This rule works most of the time, but unfortunately there are some exceptions. Words that end in “ss” typically form the plural by adding “es” to the end. This is to avoid having a triple “s” at the end of a word, which would look and sound strange. One goddess → Two goddesses One business → Two businesses Some words may stay the same in the plural as in the singular. For example, if you have one pet fish and you buy another, you now have two fish. If you fly in an aircraft and then fly in another, you’ve now flown in two aircraft. There’s no rule to tell us which words will behave like this, but luckily the list isn’t too daunting. The proofreading website Vaping has come up with 101 examples of these words. 36

Some of them may be a little obscure, but you’ll see there are certainly some that you’ll use all the time. When you come across a word like this, make a note of it to help you remember that it’s different. You may also start to see patterns among irregular plurals, but don’t rely on them without checking. For example, one goose becomes two geese, but one moose becomes two moose (not “Meese”). These sorts of words are the most misleading and probably the hardest to get the hang of. One way of learning these irregular plurals is to create a table with two columns during your regular vocabulary study. When you learn an important piece of vocabulary, write the singular form in one column and the plural in the opposite column. Hang the table somewhere you’ll see it regularly, like on the back of your bedroom door or on your fridge. Once you get used to seeing them, they’ll begin to look less odd! Articles and Gender Understanding articles and gender in English is crucial for being able to refer to a person or thing correctly. Unfortunately, this highly important English grammar rule is also one of the strangest for many non-native speakers. That’s because in many languages, the way that you describe a noun is dependent on its gender. In French, for instance, there are different articles for feminine and masculine nouns. In English, nouns don’t have a grammatical gender. It’s common for new English speakers to refer to objects as “he” or “she” because they’re used to them having a gender in their native language. The good news is that once you break this habit, the English grammar is actually very simple. The two articles you need are “the” and “a.” We use “the” to refer to specific objects directly, while we use “a” to refer to objects more generally. 37

I would like to eat the banana you bought at the store today. I would like to eat a banana, but there aren’t any in the house. If a noun begins with a vowel, the indefinite article becomes “an” rather than “a.” A bicycle An apple Confusingly, English speakers love to humanize objects, even though we don’t use genders. Vehicles are often treated as feminine. You may hear someone say, “Look at her engine, she’s a real beauty!” when talking about a car. This doesn’t mean that a car should actually be referred to as “she,” it’s just a way of expressing pride or fondness for a machine by making it sound more like a person. You can reach more bravely into the scary world of sentence construction and accurate communication if you are armed with grammar guidelines. 11 rules of grammar will help you become a champ at selecting words and punctuation. Key Rules 1. Use Active Voice Every human language starts an active sentence with the subject, or the "doer." In English, the verb (what's being done) follows the subject. If there is an object (the receiver of the action), it comes after the verb. The formula looks like this: S+V+O. This rule is the foundation of the English language. Here are some examples: Mary walked the dog. The dog liked Mary. I did not like the dog. 2. Link Ideas with a Conjunction Sometimes you want to link two ideas with a second S+V+O combination. When you do, you need a coordinating conjunction. The new formula looks like this: 38

S+V+O, COORDINATING CONJUNCTION+S+V+O Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember with an acronymic mnemonic device: FANBOYS For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So 3. Use a Comma to Connect Two Ideas As One FANBOYS are used when connecting two ideas as one in a single sentence, but don't forget the comma. For example: I do not walk Mary's dog, nor do I wash him. Mary fed her dog, and I drank tea. Mary feeds and walks her dog every day, but the dog is still hyperactive. 4. Use a Serial Comma in a List The serial, or Oxford, comma is a controversial rule of grammar. Some want to eliminate it altogether while others just don't know how to use it. The serial comma is the last comma in a list, usually appearing before "and." The serial comma comes after "dog" in this sentence: Pets R Us has lizards, dogs, and birds. Commas separate units in a list. In the above case, each unit only has one part, so it's easy. Where people get confused is when the units are bigger, but the rule still applies: Pets R Us has lizards and frogs, dogs and cats, and parakeets and macaws. Notice that the serial comma comes before "and" but not the last "and" in the sentence. The "and" that follows the comma is only there because it sounds better. Grammatically, "and" is irrelevant. Only units matter. 5. Use the Semicolon to Join Two Ideas A list of grammar rules has to include the scariest of punctuation marks. It might look funny, but don't be afraid of the semicolon; it's the easiest thing in the world to use! Say you want to join two ideas but can't figure out or can't be bothered to use a coordinating conjunction. The two ideas can be separate sentences, but you think that they are so closely connected; they really should be one. Use a semicolon. 39

Mary's dog is hyperactive; it won't stop barking or sit still. My heart is like a cup of Lapsing Slouching tea; it's bitter and smoky. Mary has to walk her dog every day; it is the most hyperactive dog anyone has ever seen. 6. Use the Simple Present Tense for Habitual Actions The simple present is the tense you use for any habitual action. The things you always do or do every Tuesday are described with the simple present, which just means you pick the first form of any verb. Mary likes dogs. I don't walk Mary's dog. Mary and I drink tea every Tuesday together. 7. Use the Present Progressive Tense for Current Action The present progressive tense is for anything that is happening right now. All of the progressive tenses are easy to spot because their verbs always end with "-ing" and get a helping verb. A helping verb is just so we know who and when we're talking about. In the present progressive, the helping verbs are the present tense conjugations of "to be." I am drinking Lapsing Slouching tea. The barking dogs outside are driving me crazy. Mary is playing with her hyperactive dog. 8. Add "ed" to verbs for the Past Tense When we talk about the past, we have to add an "-ed" to regular verbs to make the second form. Irregular verbs are tricky and have their own sets of rules. Drink, for example, turns to "drank." Most of the time, though, "-ed" will do. I drank a lot of Lapsang Souchong tea yesterday, but Mary didn't. The dogs stopped barking two seconds ago, and I am feeling better. Mary played fetch with her hyperactive dog. 40

9-11. Use Perfect Tenses Practice makes perfect with the perfect tenses. Here are three rules to finish the 11 rules of grammar. If you remember these, you'll be well on your way to perfection. 9. Use Present Perfect for the Unfinished Past The present perfect can be confusing for some, but it is one of the most important rules of grammar. When people talk about things that have already happened but consider the time in which they occurred to be unfinished, they use the third form of the verb with a helping verb. The helping verb for the present perfect is the present tense conjugation of "to have." I have drunk three cups of Lapsing Slouching tea today. Mary's hyperactive cur dog has bitten me three times so far. Mary has walked her hyperactive poodle 100 times this week. Unfortunately, the only way to know the third forms of verbs is to remember them. 10. Use Present Perfect Progressive for Unfinished Action and PastWhen the action as well as the time is considered unfinished, the verb loads up on third form helping verbs ("to be" and "to have") and changes to the progressive form. Western countries have been waging wars in the Middle East for thousands of years. I have been drinking tea all day. Mary's dog has been barking like crazy since it was born. 11. Use Past Perfect for the First of Two Past Actions When two things happen in the past, we have to mark which one happened first. The one that happened first changes to third form and gets the helping verb, "had." By the time I drank one cup of Lapsing Slouching, Mary's dog had barked a million times. I had not yet eaten breakfast when Mary walked her dog. He could not pay for lunch because he had lost his wallet. What is so Important About English Grammar Rules? 41

-Do you get nervous just seeing that word? -Do you think “I need to improve my grammar so I can speak English better”? -Do you spend a lot of time memorizing grammar rules but wonder why your English hasn’t improved? Grammar rules are nice, but they should not be the main focus of your English studies. Here are 4 important truths about grammar rules. 1. Grammar rules are easy to teach and easy to learn. Grammar explains how words are organized in a sentence. When you speak and write, you have to put the words in the right order so that people will understand what you are saying or writing. Rules make people feel comfortable. Learning rules makes students feel good. Learning grammar rules helps students feel confident that they are learning English. Grammar rules help you do well on an English test. We feel proud of ourselves when we get a good mark on a test. If we get a good mark on a test, this means we can speak English, right? Wrong Let’s be honest. Learning grammar rules is easier than listening and reading. However, it’s not going to help you speak. If you want to speak English well, you need to know the correct order of words. You can do this by learning collocations, phrases, and sentences, not by memorizing rules 3. Native speakers don’t learn many rules in school. If you asked a native English speaker to explain what a relative clause is or what a coordinating conjunction is, they would probably say “I don’t know!” We learn very basic English grammar in school. I am a native English and I speak English fluently, but I had never heard of a gerund or the present perfect tense before I started teaching English. I can communicate very well in English without knowing grammar rules. Native speakers don’t learn English by memorizing grammar rules. 42

Native speakers learn how to speak first by listening to everyone around them. At school, they learn how to read and write. Their English continues to improve the more they read and the more they listen to people around them. I don’t think it’s fair to expect English learners to know grammar rules that native speakers don’t know. 4. Memorizing rules prevents you from improving your English. What happens when you see a sentence that is different from a rule that you learned? Do you ignore the sentence? Do you assume the sentence is wrong? What if you are missing an opportunity to improve your English? For example, did you know that you can use sentences with the present simple or the present continuous tenses to talk about the future? What are you doing this weekend? Did you know that you can use today with the simple past if you are speaking about an event that happened earlier in the day? Or did you learn a rule that said you can’t use present time words like today with the simple past tense? What did you learn today? (a mother speaks to her son after school) When you try to learn English by learning rules, you limit yourself. It’s better to learn English by learning sentences instead of memorizing rules. 2. English sentences don’t always follow rules. A rule is something that you can or cannot do, or what you are allowed or not allowed to do. You need to know how English grammar is different from grammar in your language. You need to know that there are some things that you can do in your language that you can’t do in English. English speakers say, “I am 30 years old” while French speakers say, “I have 30 years.” You can’t say, “I have 30 years” when talking about your age in English. 43

However, English isn’t perfect. It’s messy. It’s impossible to explain every English sentence with a rule. Sometimes the answer to the question “why?” is “that’s just the way it is!” Don’t think of English grammar as a group of rules. 2.3 Strategies of teaching grammar. Even as a young lover of literature, grammar was never my favorite subject. I know most of my students feel exactly the same way. Learning the rules of punctuation and structure can be less appealing to kids than the more obviously creative and fun aspects of writing. That’s why the best strategies for teaching grammar in elementary school all focus on the same things: piquing your students’ curiosity and bringing language to life in creative, engaging ways. The following strategies are sure to give your grammar lessons that extra edge they need to be truly effective—and enjoyable. As much as I love reading and writing, even I have to admit that sometimes, words just aren’t enough. A picture, after all, is worth a thousand—or so they say. Sometimes visual aids are necessary for helping your elementary students grasp something as conceptual as grammar in concrete terms. Educational videos can be a great way to grab younger students’ attention and help them see how different parts of speech and rules of punctuation work together to create meaningful sentences. (And yes, believe it or not, Schoolhouse Rock is still a thing!) Graphic organizers, like this “Spice Up Your Writing” worksheet, can help students understand how different words are classified, as well as keeping them on task and on topic when formulating sentences and paragraphs of their own. Go Fish vocabulary cards are widely available for purchase, but it’s also a breeze (not to mention inexpensive) to have your students make their own using index cards and markers. Instead of asking for threes or aces, they’ll be fishing for parts of speech. Fill-in-the-Blanks. Create your own Mad Libs-inspired word game by asking your students to create framed sentences with only certain types of words missing— adjectives, or perhaps adverbs ending in “ly”. Ask them to create a list on a separate piece of paper of just the types of words needed to fill in the blanks. Have them partner up and swap lists, filling in the blanks without seeing the original framed sentences. Finally, ask them to swap back and fill in the blanks with their partner’s words. Have your students draw the marks blindly from a hat or bag and see if they can pin it to the board in a spot that makes grammatical senseStrategy 2: Get Creative Working with examples is especially important when it comes to teaching grammar in elementary school. Seeing the rules of writing in action helps illustrate the purpose and importance of those rules. However, as tempting as it is to simply use cut-and- dried examples straight from a textbook or other basic resource, a far more engaging lesson plan will involve thinking a bit farther outside the box. Try asking your students to bring in their favorite books to use as reference material. Ask them to copy a sentence, a paragraph or even a page from the book and identify 55

different grammatical elements and how they affect the meaning of the text. Reading something they enjoy will motivate your students both to pay more attention and dig a little deeper when completing the assignment. Alternatively, you can hand-pick a few clips from popular age-appropriate movies or TV shows to use as examples. Transcribing the dialogue might be a bit difficult for your students, so you can use these clips in other ways—for instance, asking your students to raise their hands whenever someone uses a pronoun, or pausing after each sentence to ask what sort of punctuation mark should go at the end of it. There are three golden rules for successful grammar teaching. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are. So instead, let me offer a few personal opinions. I'll try to be brief: I've spent the last three years writing a practical grammar course that's moving towards publication, and I've got so much in my head that it's hard to sum it all up. theory There is a lot of theory around, much of it contradictory. It can be valuable, but I sometimes feel, to quote Mark Twain, that "the researches of many commentators have already thrown much darkness on this subject, and it is probable that, if they continue, we shall soon know nothing at all about it". My rather unhelpful view is that it all depends. Learners vary greatly in their response to grammar teaching: some get a lot out of it, some very little. Learning contexts and purposes also vary greatly. And 'grammar' means so many different things that it's extremely difficult to generalise about how to teach it. explanations 56

In general, I have little sympathy with people who are hostile to giving students rules. Explanations of how things work are often useful. They do need to be clear and simple, though: the whole truth can be counterproductive, in language as in life. I get uneasy if an explanation in a book for learners takes up more than two or three lines of text. They should be in the mother tongue if possible. Some points can be usefully learnt through an inductive 'discovery' approach, others probably not. examples Good realistic examples are vital, but they don't replace explanations – an example on its own never tells you exactly what it's an example of. Suitably chosen authentic material – advertisements, cartoons, songs, poems, etc – can make examples memorable and fix them in students' minds. I've often found it helpful myself to learn examples by heart – they act as a sort of template for generating similar phrases or sentences – and I think this is true for many learners. exercises Variety is really the key. There's nothing wrong with mechanical exercises – gap- filling, sentence transformation and so forth. These can help learners to grasp the form of a complex structure at the outset without having to think too much about the meaning. But it's important to move on to activities where the structure is used in more interesting and realistic ways. I like structure-oriented problem-solving activities and quizzes, games, picture-based work, text-based work, role-play, exercises that get students using the structure to talk about themselves and their ideas, exercises that combine grammar practice with vocabulary learning, and internet- exploration activities, to name just a few approaches. supplementing the coursebook The coursebook (if there is one) generally won't provide enough work on key points. More practice will be needed in class, using groupwork and pairwork. Out-of-class work (corrected or self-access) using good grammar practice materials can also help a lot. 57

'carry-over' The real problem, of course, is getting learners to carry over their grammar learning from controlled practice to spontaneous real-life use. They get their tenses all right in the grammar exercises on Tuesday morning, and all wrong in the discussion on Friday afternoon. Up to a point, we have to live with disappointment: foreign- language learners don't get everything right. We certainly need to keep coming back to key grammar points, revising them, practising them in semi-controlled speaking and writing activities, and correcting mistakes by whatever approach we find most useful, but we won't get anything like complete accuracy. (My basic view of grammar teaching is that if we teach some grammatical structures to some students, some of them will get better at using some of those structures some of the time. Definitely.) I think we also need to respect students' decisions. If they have learnt when to use third-person -s, have had plenty of practice, have had their mistakes corrected, and still go on dropping it – well, that is their choice, and we shouldn't waste any more time on the point, or beat ourselves up because we haven't got the students to do what we want. Life is too short. I'm afraid this has ended up too long for a blog and too short for a useful article. Sorry, I should never have started on it. Anyway, that's it for today. CONCLUSION To sum up, Grammar is made up of lots of little rules that work together to create a language. Since there are so many rules, you can’t expect to remember everything, especially not at once. No one can, not even professional writers and editors, who typically have at least three reference books and style manuals at their fingertips. Feel free to come back and reference the material taught in this course as often as you need. Remember, language is always changing: new words are being created (e.g., google, selfie), and words are changing meaning e will assume that you are happy with this. However, you can change your cookie settings at any time. Once we start to look at naturally occurring language we see that there is systematic variation in the choices people make. These choices relate to both the meaning and the context of the communication. Specifically, we have looked at differences in mode between grammar in speech, especially conversation, and in writing. You may already be familiar with the idea of variation within a language. For example, there are different varieties of English used in different parts of the world. India, the USA and Australia, for example, all have different varieties of the language we refer to as English. But variety also occurs within countries where different lexical and grammatical choices may be associated with regional dialects. Often people have a choice over whether to use their dialect or to communicate using what has come to be called standard English. Exploring the grammar of English can help us look at a level of variation which is much more subtle – in this free course we have used a very crude distinction between written and spoken modes.
