INTRODUCTION Nowadays most people actually do very little writing in day – today life, and a great deal of what we do write is quite short – brief notes to friends, answers on question forms, diary entries, postcards and etc. Despite this, there may still be a number of good reasons why it is useful to include work on writing in our English lessons. Our students have specific needs to take notes, copy resumes, describe processes. Writing involves a different kind of mental process. There is more time to think, to reflect, to prepare, to find alternative and better solutions. Writing should be as communicative, or functional, as possible. That is, it should be seen to fulfill the sort of normal communicative purposes, or functions it is used (for) in every day life. Although written English should certainly support and be integrated with grammar and vocabulary learning, the teaching of writing should be recognized as a special part of language teaching with its own aims and techniques.As you know, writing is the reproductive skill and our students commit many mistakes organizing in a sentence, sentences into a paragraph. Writing is intimately related to the other language skills. One reads a text to write answers to questions (in reading comprehension activities) or to summarize it (in summary writing). Similarly one usually discusses ideas before writing them down, and one listens before writing. There are different types of writing which reflect the different reasons for writing. Effective writing, therefore depends on one’s ability to structure and organize words and sentences into a meaningful whole. On the first steps in the teaching writing we may use sentences whose words have been scrambled. They will serve as illustrations of how the teachers explain grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics while teaching organizational writing. The internal structure (syntax) of the sentences is the immediate problem for the student. 2

The teacher can teach many other conventions of punctuation, depending on the structure of the sentence under consideration. Once students understand sentence order, the teacher can move to sentence arrangement in a paragraph. The organization of any text depends greatly on the literary genre it represents [for instance, if a text is a narrative, or a commentary, or analysis, each genre requires and organizational format. In an analysis, the writing must be logically organized whereas narratives require a chronological ordering; and a commentary presents an opinion with supportive facts]. Whatever the case, organizing a paragraph or a text requires an understanding of rhetorical markers. The student should watch for the following. Organizing a paragraph or a text requires an understanding of rhetorical markers: Semantic markers. They indicate how ideas are being developed. Examples of these semantic markers include firstly, secondly, finally, etc. We use widely these markers in "brief summary". Markers for illustrations and examples such as, for instance, for example, etc. Markers that introduce an idea that runs against what has been said earlier: but, nevertheless, yet, although, by contrast, etc. Markers showing a cause and effect relationship between one idea and another. They include, so, therefore, because, since, thus, consequently. Markers that show the speaker’s intention to sum up his message. Some of these phrases are to summarize, in other words, it amounts to, etc. Markers indicating the relative importance of different items, e.g, it is worth nothing, it is important to note that, the next point is, etc. Markers that express a time relationship, e.g, then, next, after, while, when. English is a subject at the university because the students need it to read scientific books in that language. A university student has to pass many examinations. In other words ha has to student hard. 3

To consult magazines for scientific work, some steps are necessary: first, scan the table of contents to select some articles; next skim through the articles selected, lastly study the articles and take notes. After a short brainstorming session the teacher tells the class the purpose of the activity and then proceeds to demonstrate free writing on the blackboard. A two minute time limit is set and the teacher chooses an item from her own brainstorming notes and writes freely and quickly until the time is used up. There is close relationship between free writing and creative writing. Writing is essentially a creative process and good writers must learn to communicate their ideas clearly to an unseen audience. This takes a lot of practice. However, students have traditionally learned to write by completing fill in the blanks exercises which focus on accuracy rather than o the composing process. Creative writing on the other hand, gives learners practice in composing and complements more traditional approaches. Here are some activities that focus on communication and self expression students will be encouraged to write if writing tasks motivate them and keep them interested. Pictures are a good starting point for writing narratives. One method is to collect about twenty photographs of people of different ages from various magazines. Then the teacher tapes these to the board and tell students that they should choose a picture of one person and try to write a narrative imagining that they are that person. They have to concentrate on details like job, hobbies, whether single or married, children, and so on. The teacher also tell them to avoid describing the person’s physical appearance and to use first person singular pronouns throughout. After they have finished writing they take reading their imaginary autobiographical narratives out loud while the other students have to look at the board and guess which of the people is "talking". As there is no description of physical features, the students have to listen closely to try and identify the right person. Using the first person helps to make the narratives sound authentic and convincing. This activity emphasizes the importance of writing as communication because any lack of clarity means that the listeners will not be able to recognize the "speaker". It 4

Some have the innate ability to put their thoughts into words. Writing is more beneficial, specifically for those who are emotional, and do not express verbally. This tool allows them to express their ideas, thoughts or their existing mental condition, which otherwise, may not be possible. People express themselves by writing novels, short stories, biographies, and even personal diaries, etc. Interestingly, 93% of teens in American schools are fond of writing, when it's not a part of their school curriculum; rather when it is for themselves. So, by proper guidance and counseling, the writing abilities of these teens can be channelized in such a way that, they could stand in good stead in the chosen avenue of their lives. Often, a person is judged by the quality of writing, he/she possesses. Be it a school, college, workplace or a society, writing has become a vital yardstick to assess one's knowledge, and intellectuality. When we come across a person who is prim and proper, we immediately make an impression about that person being careful, responsible, and sincere. Similarly, if the writing is devoid of mistakes, we tend to create a good impression about the writer. Flexibilityand Maturity Writing is an art, which you develop over a period of time. This practice will make you more mature as a writer, because you gradually start putting yourself into the shoes of the reader, and express accordingly. Also, the more you write, the more flexible your vision and thought process become towards the requirements and demands of the readers. Ability to Explain While writing, one has to be extra cautious with regard to the tone and tenor of the language, grammar, spellings, etc., so that the reader can decipher the intended meaning of the content. When we write something, there is a tendency to read the content over 6

and over, for possible errors or mistakes. By doing this, we thoroughly understand what we have written, and how we can improve it, to explain to the reader in a simple and concise way what we are trying to convey. Serves as a Record Writing skills are important to write our ideas and experiences for future references. For example: scientific and technological accomplishments cannot be communicated verbally. They have to be presented in a written format, such as scientific journals and white papers. Science would not have existed, had the scientists not recorded each and every experiment in a proper written format. The following areas will throw light on writing as a form of communication. Business: It is not possible to conduct all transactions by speech alone. If there exists a business project or an opportunity, one needs to send written proposals. The document should have clarity. Electronic mail has become a very popular means of communication in the business world today. This source of communication is used to send business correspondence addressed to customers, clients, associates, business partners, and employees within the organization. Education: One learns the art of writing in school and college. The skill of expressing one's thoughts, and communicating ideas and views to others is developed here. Exams are an ideal opportunity to demonstrate this facet. As per a national survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, and the National Commission on Writing, both the teenagers and their parents believe that "good writing is a bedrock for future success". Also, 8 in 10 parents, now, are of the opinion that writing has become more important today, than it was 20 years ago. Career Planning: When it comes to career planning, written communication skills invariably become the deciding factor. The various entrance exams conducted like: SAT, GRE, ACT, GMAT, etc., assess the verbal and written communication skills of the candidates. Often, candidates who are good at mathematics and analytics, but poor in written communication are also rejected, because the examiners believe that good communication skills - verbal or written - are pivotal for students opting for higher education. 7

Writing skills are crucial in nearly every profession. In the medical field , for instance, doctors are required to take detailed notes on patients, while software developers need to write concise instructional manuals for users. Nearly everybody is required to write emails and other communications to fellow workers and managers, while in roles that carry accountability, you need to be able to document clearly the tasks that you have done. In short, good writing skills are highly important in the workplace. If you are sending emails full of typos, poorly constructed sentences and grammatical errors, then it can imply that you take a similar attitude towards your work. Therefore, good writing skills not only improve communication in the workplace , but can also have an effect on how you are perceived. Here are some of the reasons why writing skills are important to our careers. Professionalism When the job at hand involves writing - such as in the case of professional writers , journalists and other communications professionals - then your literacy skills are clearly going to be important. In the modern workplace, though, professionals in every sector need to demonstrate good writing skills. While you're unlikely to be writing the next great American novel, you will be sending emails, compiling reports and typing memos, meaning that in order to be understood, you need to be able to write in a manner that is easily comprehensible and well organised. Communication As mentioned, workers are constantly writing notes, emails, memos, letters, and reports. All of these require good writing skills so that people are able to communicate their ideas effectively. Poor writing skills, on the other hand - especially where communication with management is concerned - can be a red flag that an employee is not suited to more senior positions and, as such, can be a hindrance to promotion. Further, people with poor writing skills come across as having a lower level of intelligence. 8

Credibility Employees with excellent writing skills are generally viewed as being a hot commodity . Companies around the world are spending hefty amounts of money to train their employees and improve their writing skills. Imagine a situation where you, as an employee, download a report or try to interpret a message from a colleague, but the email or report is full of typos and grammatical errors. It would not only waste a lot of time, but also fail to effectively communicate the message. This means that the sender was ignorant and did not bother to proofread their work. Considerations Good writing skills open doors for many junior employees to be considered for senior positions. However, as important as these skills are, it is also important to know when and when not to correct another person. Correcting the wrong person can get you in trouble at work or even fired. That’s why I think writing is a way to help, educate, entertain people. And with the help of the blog, social media anyone can do it. No matter they are student, housewives and retired officer. And writing skills will be very helpful in that. That’s why there is a script writer /editors jobs exist. Writing skill will improve your vocabulary. You can use 10 words or 5 types of different sentences to point out your facts but it’s not possible if your vocabulary is not strong. I don’t think there is any writer in the world who is not effective in the verbal communication. That’s why writing is a very important skill and method to improve your communication, debating and speech skills. 7. Writing improve your focus and connect you with yourself: Whatever you write. It can be a blog post, career experiences, business tips, quotes and shayari. You can’t write it effectively without connecting the words to your heart and brain. And it’s a way that make you focused, intelligent and conscious. And it reflect in the personality. 11

I am writing from the last 13 years. It started from a personal diary. And from last 5 years, I am writing my experiences and skills in blogs/social media for students and entrepreneurs. I am not a famous writer, nor I have written any book yet, but I write. I know I am not a good writer, nor I have the writing skills. But one thing I know is that I love writing and sharing what I think will be good for people, especially in business and career. So I learned in these years that writing skills or writing (no matter about the skill level) in any medium not matter. As a tutor in the Writing Center, I have observed a number of common grammar and punctuation mistakes that writers frequently make. The following tips focus on the common errors that I have seen students make in their papers. This reference sheet is not a review of all the necessary grammar and punctuation rules; rather, it is an overview to help students troubleshoot common errors. When to Use Commas 1. Use a comma to separate an introductory phrase from the rest of the sentence. In other words, if there is a group of words at the beginning of the sentence that seems to be introducing more information, set it off with commas to make it clearer. Placing a comma after introductory phrases signals to the readers that they are about to learn more about the subject. Here’s an example: After Sarah and Janna went ice skating, they went to the mall. If you read the sentence aloud, you can sometimes hear that a phrase is acting like an introduction. If it is, follow it up with a comma. 2. Use commas between all items in a series, including before the coordinating conjunction. For Thanksgiving, Allison’s grandmother made turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, and apple pie. Many students feel that the comma before the coordinating conjunction is not needed, but it is. 3. Use a comma before the word which in a sentence. Descriptive information introduced by the word which is not considered essential to the meaning of the sentence, and it is set off with commas. Devon’s garden, which is full of flowers, is located on the side of her house. The fact that the garden is full of flowers is a nice description, but it has nothing to do with the fact that it is located on the side of her house . 4. When writing an address, most students remember to place a comma between the city and the state or country, but many students do not realize that a comma is also needed after the state or country. Justin Williams was born in Cobourg, Ontario, on October 4, 1981. 14

Don’t forget that a comma is also needed between the day and the year in a date. 5. Never separate the subject of a sentence from its verb with a comma. Wrong: Many fans who attend football games , bring blankets and radios. Correct: Many fans who attend football games bring blankets and radios. 6. Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction that joins two sentences. Do not place a comma after the conjunction. Wrong: Keith likes the color orange but he doesn’t like oranges. Also Wrong: Keith likes the color orange but , he doesn’t like oranges. Correct: Keith likes the color orange , but he doesn’t like oranges. If you do not use a comma in the example above, then the sentence is a run-on. Still have questions about commas? I am often asked whether a hyphen is needed between the italicized words in the following sentence: Susan is a well known poet. The way to go about this sentence is to look at how the words well and known are working in the sentence. Here, they are both describing the noun poet . Because they are describing a noun, they are acting as adjectives. A hyphen is needed, and the sentence should read: Susan is a well-known poet. However, a hyphen is not needed in the following sentence: Susan is well known. Why no hyphen? The words well and known do not come before a noun. 15

Still confused about hyphens? Look up the word or words in question in a dictionary. Dictionaries will usually tell you what to do with a compound word. Avoiding Run-On Sentences Run-on sentences occur often but are easy to fix. Here’s an example sentence: Andrew is a very anxious man he is always worrying. This is a run-on sentence because there are two smaller sentences improperly joined together. There are four main ways to fix a run-on sentence. 1. Insert a comma and a coordinating conjunction. There are seven coordinating conjunctions in English: and , but , or , for , nor , yet , so . That’s it. You can add a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction to fix the sentence: Andrew is a very anxious man , and he is always worrying. ***Ever wonder what a comma splice is? Well, a comma splice occurs when a writer joins two smaller sentences (independent clauses) with a comma but leaves out the coordinating conjunction. Remember, both a comma and a coordinating conjunction are needed; otherwise, the sentence is still a run-on. 2. Insert a semicolon. A semicolon can be used to join the two fused sentences. This works best if the two smaller sentences are related to one another in some way. In the example sentence, the fact that he is always worrying describes Andrew and the fact that he is anxious. Andrew is a very anxious man; he is always worrying. 3. Divide the run-on into two smaller sentences. There is nothing wrong with dividing a run-on sentence into smaller sentences. But it is important to use other ways to fix run-on sentences as well, or your paper may end up with many short sentences. Having too many short sentences is stylistically awkward. Andrew is a very anxious man. He is always worrying. 4. Rewrite the sentence. This takes more work than changing the punctuation of the run-on sentence, but it is usually worth the effort. 16

Punctuation Around Quotation Marks It is generally understood that quotation marks are used to enclose direct quotations; however, it is common for writers to misplace the punctuation around quotation marks. Here are a few reminders: 1. Commas and periods go inside the quotation marks (except in the case of parenthetical citation). "This box is too heavy," Anna said. "I think I might drop it." The Exception : When citing a quotation from a book with parenthetical citation, the period goes outside the parentheses. Anna said, "This box is too heavy" (Smith 8). 2. Question marks and exclamation points go inside the quotation marks. Anna asked, "Is this box too heavy?" The Exception : When citing a quotation that has a question mark or exclamation point, the punctuation goes inside the quotation marks, and the citation is followed by a period of its own. Anna asked, "Is this box too heavy?" (Smith 8). 3. Colons and semicolons go outside the quotation marks. Anna said, "This box is too heavy"; the box, however, had nothing in it. More about Quotation Marks Quotation marks can be used to do things other than setting off direct quotations. Here are some ways that students tend to get tripped up with quotation marks: 1. Use quotation marks when using a word as a word. The word "posh" has an interesting word history. Words used in this way can also be italicized or underlined. 2. Use quotation marks for the titles of short works such as newspaper articles, short poems, short stories, essays, songs, or chapters of a book. Stephen Crane’s short story "The Open Boat" is widely read in high schools. 17

3. Do not use quotation marks around indirect quotations. In other words, quotation marks are not needed if you are using your own words to tell the reader what another person said. Here’s an example: Samantha said that "she would be late to class today." The quotation marks in the above sentence are not needed because you are not directly quoting Samantha; you are paraphrasing what she told you. The sentence should read: Samantha said that she would be late to class today. 4. Do not use quotation marks around familiar words or sayings in order t attention to them. The quotation marks in the following sentence are not needed: Most of the students in the class believe that Anthony is a "teacher’s pet." Students usually use quotation marks here because they want to draw attention to a phrase or to emphasize an important point; however, the quotation marks are not needed to create this emphasis. 5. Do not use quotation marks around an indented quotation. The fact that the text is indented lets the reader know that it has been quoted. When should you indent a quotation? Indent a quotation when quoting more than four lines of prose or more than three lines of poetry. Here are a few examples of indented quotations: Prose Quotation: Raphael disagreed with Thomas More’s vision of a utopian society: In other words, I am quite convinced that you’ll never get a fair distribution of goods, or a satisfactory organization of human life, until you abolish private property altogether. So long as it exists, the vast majority of the human race, and the vastly superior part of it, will go on labouring under a burden of poverty, hardship, and worry. (More 66)[1] (Notice that the parenthetical citation is placed outside of the punctuation. This is because it applies to the entire indented quotation.) Poetic Quotation: The description of Beowulf’s defeat of the monster Grendel is wonderfully graphic: 18

. . . The monster’s whole body was in pain, a tremendous wound appeared on his shoulder. Sinews split and the bone-lappings burst. Beowulf was granted the glory of winning; Grendel was driven under the fen-banks, fatally hurt, to his desolate lair . . . . (Beowulf 55)[2] (Again, the parenthetical citation is placed outside of the punctuation.) Underlining and Italics If you understand when to use quotation marks, then it is easy to remember when to use underlining or italics. As a general rule, italics and underlining are interchangeable, and it is always a good idea to find out if your professor has a preference. 1. Titles of large works underlined or italicized: newspapers, books, magazines, pamphlets, long poems, plays, films, television programs, and web sites. The New York Times is one of the most widely read newspapers in the United States. 2. Foreign words or phrases in an English sentence are underlined or italicized. Many politicians advocate a laissez faire approach to economics and business. Who vs. Whom One way to decide whether to use who or whom in a sentence is to look at the sentence in parts. Look at the following sentence in two parts: Sarah is the girl who/whom bought the red bicycle . The first part of the sentence can be considered the main part of the sentence. Everything after it works grammatically by itself. By itself, the second part of the sentence looks like a mini sentence of its own. Now, in order to decide between who and whom , look at how the word is operating in the sentence. It is the subject of the verb bought . Because it is the subject, you should use the subjective word who . Another way to remember this is to use another pronoun in the second part of the sentence as a test like this: 19

She bought the red bicycle. Her bought the red bicycle. She is also a subject pronoun and is the correct choice. Here’s another sentence: The girl who/whom I saw on television was at the mall. This one is a little tricky. Again, break the sentence into two parts. The girl was at the mall is the main sentence. Who/whom I saw on television is a phrase that describes the girl . Now, concentrate on the grammar of the part in question. The subject is I and the verb is saw . Just ask yourself the question: I saw what? The answer is I saw who/whom. In this part of the sentence, the word in question comes after the verb saw , and it is a direct object. This means that the word should be in objective case, and the objective case word is whom. Its vs. It’s The word it’s is a contraction. If the contraction is broken down, the word it’s is really saying it is . Because it is a contraction, an apostrophe is needed. It’s really cold outside. (Same as: It is really cold outside.) The word its is a possessive pronoun but does not need an apostrophe. Confused? Think of the possessive pronouns hers , yours , and theirs . They don’t need apostrophes either. The cat picked up its toy mouse and walked out of the room. Which, That, or Who Sometimes it is hard to remember when it is appropriate to use the words which , that , and who . Here are a few tips to help you remember when and how to use these words: 1. Use the word who only when referring to individual people. Jeff is the student who always comes to class late. 2. Use the word that when referring to a group of people. The marching band that won the competition had five tuba players. 3. The word that can also be used to introduce descriptive information that is essential to the meaning of the sentence. In other words, if you cannot understand the meaning of the sentence without the descriptive information, introduce it with that . 20

Mark is a player on the team that won the game. Without the descriptive information that won the game , the reader would be left to wonder what team Mark played for. 4. Use the word which to introduce descriptive information that is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. In other words, if you can understand the sentence without the descriptive information, introduce it with which . (Never use the word which to refer to people or groups of people.) The student needed a good grade on his history test , which was very difficult. The fact that the test was difficult describes the test but is not important to the meaning of the sentence. It is an extra detail, so it is introduced by which . Also, when the word which is used, it is preceded by a comma; this signals to the reader that the description is just extra information. 2.2. Basic writing & composition Sometimes called “remedial” or “developmental” writing, basic writing (BW) was developed in the 1970s, generally under the constraints of open admissions policies. Basic writing courses are meant to help students come to a basic understanding and familiarity with formal written English. BW students can be categorized in two ways: 1) 21

students coming straight from high school, who did not develop a basic competency in formal written English before graduation and who placed below average on a college writing placement test, and 2) non-traditional students who are older than average college freshman and who are coming to college for the first time in order to further their education in the hopes of gaining the skills necessary for better employment and earning more money. These are generally students that may have full-time jobs, come to classes at night, and may have children, and perhaps be a single parent. In some cases, non-native and ESL students are also considered basic writers, because of their unfamiliarity with the English language, let alone formal written English (sometimes identified as standard English ). BW students are usually characterized by a lack of understanding of the rules of formal written English which may manifest itself in non-traditional syntax, grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, mechanics, organization, and clarity. Mina Shaughnessy , a pioneer in the field of basic writing, characterized basic writers as “those that had been left so far behind the others in their formal education that they appeared to have little chance of catching up, students whose difficulty with the written language seemed of a different order from those of the other groups, as if they had come, you might say, from a different country, or at least through different schools, where even modest standards of high-school literacy had not been met." However, BW is also a relative term. What might be considered freshman-level writing at one university might be characterized as basic writing at another, or even advanced writing at another, depending on the ability of the general student population and university standards. Basic Writing is also a field of study. The research in the field probes into the concerns of teachers and students on the academic margins. Deborah Mutnick explains about Basic Writing: “It signifies struggles for inclusion, diversity and equal opportunity; debates over standards and linguistic hegemony; the exploitation of faculty and staff on the academic margins; and the policies that opened and not threatened to close higher education’s doors to masses of people. It has played a key role not only in providing opportunities for research on adult literacy but also in illuminating the politics of writing in terms of 22

race, class, ethnicity, and other social structures that would have remained invisible in the mostly white, middle-class classrooms that have traditionally constituted the “mainstream.” History of basic writing The creation of basic writing courses in colleges across the United States is largely the result of the creation of open-admissions policies that no longer required academic standards be set for entrance into college. The first to start such a program was the City University of New York ( CUNY ) Before opening their campus to all those who wanted higher education, regardless of previous academic performance, CUNY had instituted the SEEK program (Search for Education , Elevation , and Knowledge ) which was designed as a pre-collegiate program that was meant to prepare students, who were not yet ready to enter the university, for full admission. However, with the advent of open admissions in 1970 there was no longer a need for pre-collegiate classes, so the program transformed into a course taken by those admitted to the university who did not place well on admissions placement tests. The writing program that stemmed from this transformation became known as a basic writing course because it dealt not with preparing highly literate students for upper-level course work, but with the teaching the very basics of written communication. Since the late seventies, many colleges and universities have created open admissions policies, and have in turn created BW programs across the country. However, from the very beginning there has been large opposition to open admissions policies. Open admissions detractors have prevailed at some colleges and universities, overturning open admissions policies. As a result, BW course have either been eliminated entirely from the curriculum or have been relegated to community colleges. Mina P. Shaughnessy Mina P. Shaughnessy (pronounced MY-NA SHAWN-ES-EE), involved with the SEEK program at CUNY, was a proponent of open admissions for City College (part of the CUNY system) and became director of the BW program once City College opened its doors to all. Shaughnessy worked hard not only to design a curriculum for students that seemed alien to the professors that literally did not know what to do with students 23

who seemed not to be able to put two words together, in some cases, but to understand and categorize the characteristics of basic writers in order to understand them better, and be able to teach them more effectively. For this purpose, Shaughnessy compiled four- thousand placement essays written by students as part of the entrance process into City College and classified the errors that she found, trying to understand the logic behind spelling, syntax, grammar, etc., that seemed, at best, scattered and, at worst, completely arbitrary. She published her results in the book Errors and Expectations (1977). Her main conclusion is that these writers are not scattered or arbitrary, but that they have created systems of written English based on misunderstood rules, half-understood lessons on punctuation, their own local or familial dialects, among others, and have logically created their own systems of written English. It is not that these students do not understand communication, but they simply have not been taught or have misunderstood the rules of written formal English. Shaughnessy’s work was considered groundbreaking and Errors and Expectations is still considered the seminal book in the field of BW. And although she died in 1978, and other scholars have made contributions to the field, Shaughnessy remains its leading figure today. Mina P. Shaughnessy is arguably the most prominent name in the field of BW. She helped create the atmosphere of academic respectability BW needed to become recognized as a legitimate scholarly field. Her 1977 book, Errors and Expectations , set the tone for much (if not all) of the BW scholarship that followed. BW scholars, whether they agree with Shaughnessy or not, are still responding to her. The ‘‘‘Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing’’’ includes this annotation for Errors and Expectations : “Shaughnessy takes teachers through writing problems such as poor handwriting and punctuation, syntax, common errors, spelling and vocabulary errors, and lack of idea development. While her focus is primarily on error, it is underscored by a sensitive understanding of the reasons behind the rhetorical and linguistic difficulties discussed and a strong belief in the inherent intelligence of learners described as ‘basic writers.’ Shaughnessy's claims about the difficulties faced by basic writers are supported by examples from thousands of student papers. Examples of many kinds of errors are 24

provided. Each chapter also includes suggestions for the teacher on how to reduce the particular kind of error discussed in that specific chapter. Shaughnessy also explains why these errors occur by examining the rules that are manifested in students' writing. The book also contains an appendix that includes suggestions for placement essay topics and also contains suggested readings for the teacher of basic writing.” All in all, Shaughnessy saw disadvantaged students as being intelligent (though scholastically under-prepared). She resolutely held that such students could be taught how to effectively write. It is teachers of BW and not BW students that need to radically alter their views toward the teaching and learning of writing. In her 1976 speech, "Diving In: An Introduction to Basic Writing", she asserted that “teachers (need to) realize and accept the need to remediate themselves regarding the needs and learning styles of basic writers.” Shaughnessy controversy From the ‘‘‘Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing’’’: “Min-Zhan Lu's 1992 article ‘Conflict and Struggle: The Enemies or Preconditions of Basic Writing?’ inspired a flurry of feminist, Marxist, and poststructuralist reexaminations of Mina Shaughnessy's work. These critiqued Shaughnessy on three counts: for forwarding an ‘essentialist’ conception of language that separates thought from expression and views discourse as a transparent vessel for meaning; for promoting basic writers' accommodation to mainstream linguistic standards and thereby minimizing the political dimensions of language use; and for overlooking materialist considerations such as the economic, social, and institutional issues surrounding basic writers and the teaching of basic writing.” To be fair, we should note that Lu’s critique applied to other big names in the field of BW including Mike Rose (see below). Other notable scholars of BW, however, like Laura Gray-Rosendale have claimed that such critiques of Shaughnessy do not hold much critical weight. “Shaughnessy’s works,” themselves, she claims, “render ambiguous if not outright defy many such negative characterizations.” . Also, David Bartholomae (see below) has defended Shaughnessy’s emphasis on error in BW students’ writing (though he still advocates 25

refocusing BW to help students learn various academic dialects). Adjusting the focus a bit, “Bartholomae extends Mina Shaughnessy's hope that teachers, especially basic writing teachers, will examine how they view errors in student writing. For example, he suggests that teachers who cannot understand student prose do not read the prose as complex texts and thus do not find the logic at work in many errors.” David Bartholomae David Bartholomae is Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at the University of Pittsburgh . Bartholomae’s most-referenced publication about BW is the book chapter “Inventing the University.” The following is a selection from that chapter: “Every time a student sits down to write for us, he has to invent the university for the occasion--invent the university, that is, or a branch of it, like history or anthropology or economics or English. The student has to learn to speak our language, to speak as we do, to try on the peculiar ways of knowing, selecting, evaluating, reporting, concluding, and arguing that define the discourse of our community. Or perhaps I should say the various discourses of our community, since it is in the nature of a liberal arts education that a student, after the first year or two, must learn to try on a variety of voices and interpretive schemes--to write, for example, as a literary critic one day and as an experimental psychologist the next; to work within fields where the rules governing the presentation of examples or the development of an argument are both distinct and, even to the professional, mysterious. The student has to appropriate (or be appropriated by) a specialized discourse, and he has to do this as though he were easily and comfortably one with his audience, as though he were a member of the academy or a historian or an anthropologist or an economist; he has to invent the university by assembling and mimicking its language while finding some compromise between idiosyncrasy, a personal history, on the one hand, and the requirements of convention, the history of a discipline, on the other hand. He must learn to speak our language. Or he must dare to speak it or to carry off the bluff, since speaking and writing will most certainly be required long before the skill is ‘learned.’ And this, understandably, causes problems.” 26

Bartholomae asserts that (though important) error should not determine the efforts of or relationship between BW teachers and their students. Rather, BW teachers should recognize that the language they demand from their BW students (typically short, direct, non-abstruse sentences) is not the language that they (the teachers) typically write and publish in. Students experience such disconnect between what they learn from their writing classes and what their discipline specific course require of them that they are often left to their own devices to figure out how to write acceptably in any given discipline. To resolve this, Bartholomae believes that BW teachers should immerse their students with academic writing (peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, etc.). BW students thus get a healthy exposure to sufficient sums of “academic” language in a teacher-assisted environment. This, Bartholomae claims, should help BW students make the transition more quickly to start writing “academically.” The idea that academics might personally strive to exhibit a clear, cogent, and elegant style in their articles and chapters, and thus model good writing for their students to emulate, is not entertained. Mike Rose Mike Rose is Professor of Social Research Methodology at UCLA . He is best known in the BW community for his part autobiographical/part pedagogically philosophical book, ‘‘Lives on the Boundary.’’ The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing offers this annotation: 2.3. A beginner’s guide to writing in English. “This examination of the idea of ‘underpreparedness’ in a range of educational schools and systems also explores Rose's own experiences as a student who was erroneously placed in the vocational education track. He suggests that lower-track 27

classes create a self-fulfilling prophesy for most students who might, if challenged to succeed, do well in advanced classes. Among the issues Rose discusses are the problems encountered by students whose improvised backgrounds provide little context for the ideas and language they encounter in the academy. By explaining his personal challenges and his experiences with various mentors, Rose illustrates how he worked to master academic language and ideas. Rose uses his experiences as a student and a teacher as evidence for a critique of conceptions of literacy used in contemporary education. He suggests that students labeled "underprepared" are inexperienced with the expectations of the academy, that literacy crises running through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were manufactured and deflect other concerns, and that schools must work with students differently.” Rose’s main interests in the study of thinking and learning include the “study of the factors – cognitive, linguistic, socio-historical, and cultural – that enhance or limit people's engagement with written language.” As well as, “The development of pedagogies and materials to enhance critical reading and writing, particularly at the secondary and post-secondary level, and particularly with ‘underprepared’ or ‘at risk’ populations.” Additionally, Rose has argued for the term basic writing as opposed to the terms "developmental" or "remedial" which have the connotations of medical terminology: "This atomistic, medical model of language is simply not supported by more recent research in language and cognition. But because the teaching of writing – particularly teaching designated remedial has been conceptually, and [...] administratively segmented from the rich theoretical investigation that characterizes other humanistic studies, these assumptions have rarely been subjected to rigorous and comprehensive scrutiny." Composition studies (also referred to as composition and rhetoric , rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or simply composition) is the professional field of writing , research, and instruction, focusing especially on writing at the college level in the United States . In many American colleges and universities, 28

undergraduate students must take freshman —sometimes even higher—composition courses. Over seventy American universities offer doctoral study in rhetoric and composition, [1] programs which usually include study of composition pedagogical theory , research methodologies in rhetoric and composition , and the history of rhetoric . Many composition scholars study not only the theory and practice of post- secondary writing instruction, but also the influence of different writing conventions and genres on writers' composing processes. [2] Composition scholars also publish in the fields of teaching English as a second or foreign language (TESOL), writing centers , and new literacies. [3] First-year composition Main article: First-year composition Most US universities have a required first-year composition course, also referred to as FYC. This is not the same as a literature course, which focuses on literary analysis and interpretation, although some colleges and universities do incorporate literature and other humanities into their composition courses; often, however, composition courses offer intensive instruction in writing non-fiction , expository texts using academic discourse conventions. Writing curricula vary considerably from institution to institution, but it may emphasize many stages of different writing processes (invention or brainstorming, drafting, revision, editing, proofreading), different forms of writing (narration, exposition, description, argumentation, comparison and contrast), different portions of the written product (introductions, conclusions, thesis statements, presentation and documentation of forms of evidence, inclusion of quotations, etc.), along with different modalities of composing to expand the concept of 'writing'. Pedagogies or approaches to teaching writing are grounded in a range of different traditions and philosophies. Advanced composition Some universities require further instruction in writing and offer courses that expand upon the skills developed in First-year composition. Second level or advanced composition may emphasize forms of argumentation and persuasion, digital media, 29

research and source documentation formats, and/or genres of writing across a range of disciplines and genres (see § Writing across the curriculum below). For example, the skills required to write business letters or annual reports will differ significantly from those required to write historical or scientific research or personal memoirs. Graduate studies Doctoral programs in Composition Studies are available at more than seventy universities and Masters's programs are available in over 170 universities. Such programs are commonly housed within English Studies or Education programs. However, recently there are an increasing number of departments specifically dedicated to this field of study (e.g. Composition Studies, Writing & Rhetoric, Composition & Linguistics, etc.). Second-language writing Second language writing is the practice of teaching English composition to non native speakers and writers of English. Teaching writing to ESL students does not receive much attention because even in ESL classes teachers focus on speaking, listening and reading, not just writing. Paul Kei Matsuda in his article "Situating ESL Writing in a Cross-Disciplinary Context" stresses the importance of teaching writing specifically with understanding the needs of ESL students to help them improve their writing.Teaching writing has progressed through several approaches during the history of education in the United States. ESL teachers might need to explore common methods which are the cognitive, social and expressive theories to create an approach that meets the needs of ESL writers and help them to overcome their difficulties. The first one of these approaches is the cognitive view which says that writing is progressing from one stage to another in a series of single steps. That means "good" writing is a planned process, which includes planning, translating and reviewing. "Understanding Composing" by Sondra Perl explains in detail this approach. She suggests that the composition of writing occurs as a recursive process. She took this idea from her observation of different writers. She thinks that writers return to "backwards" parts of the process in order to move "forward" with the overall composition. ESL teachers may find this approach helpful at first in teaching beginning 30

ESL students because at this level students do not have large amounts of vocabulary and grammar or knowledge of the style of essays which is the basis of writing English. Al- Buainain Haifa in her article "Student Writing Errors in EFL," points out that, when a researcher asked ESL students by using a survey what they would like to have learned or learned better in their writing classes, they found that the largest percentages expressed specific needs in vocabulary and grammar [8] (17). Many kinds of grammar make ESL students confused, especially because there are many exceptions. Because writing styles are different in different languages, ESL students need time to master them. Therefore, ESL teachers should find an effective way to teach ESL students vocabulary, grammar and style because the writing of English requires them. The cognitive approach can meet these needs because it emphasizes the steps, organization and process of writing. Another approach is the social view which shows the importance of teaching writing by making students learn the different languages of discourse communities. This is what David Bartholomae emphasizes in his article "Inventing the University".He uses "Inventing the University" as a phrase that describes the writing process that a student will experience when writing teachers ask them to write about a topic that relates with a discourse community which is new for them. Discourse community can be thought of as members of an academic discipline or a select audience. When the ESL students have become good at grammar and style, they face a large problem when they enter their chosen academic field. Bartholomae in this article illustrates that each academic community has a particular language or vocabulary. The problem is that any academic field has its own language, even jargon, that differs from one to another. This problem is faced not only by ESL students, but all American students will struggle with this when they begin the first year of their academic life. The social approach can be used by ESL teachers as a second step but they should make sure that their students master the basics of English writing such as grammar and style. Moreover, the expressive view which is represented in Donald Murray's article "Teach Writing as a Process Not Product", allows for wittier creating and freer movement. It suggests three elements for "good" writing which are integrity, originality, 31

and spontaneity. However, it is difficult to evaluate them in a paper. Therefore, these standards cannot be relied upon to judge writing. In addition, these elements are not the important elements that help to assess "good" writing. ESL teachers might use this approach but it can only be used for highly advanced ESL students. It is difficult to ask ESL students to write freely if they possess limited vocabulary or grammar. They need examples to help them which they can find in the cognitive approach. ESL teachers may use these common ways of teaching writing, but they need first to understand their student's difficulties. Learning writing is one of the essential difficulties that ESL students find in studying English, especially since writing is important in an academic community. Some ESL students may need to jump from being a student who does not speak English ever to a student who uses academic language in a short time which may put a large burden on their shoulders. Hence, teaching writing to ESL students is different than teaching native speakers. ESL teachers need to choose an effective way to meet the needs of ESL students. It would be helpful if ESL teachers look at these different ways of teaching writing to see which one addresses ESL students' difficulties in the best way or if a combination of these theories may be better. Multicultural pedagogies Basis in composition studies While multicultural pedagogies are not specifically tied to second-language writing pedagogies, compositionists have often considered how students' cultural knowledge and use of idioms, dialects, and/or languages other than American Edited English (AEA) can enhance their instruction in English composition. For example, Maxine Hairston's "Diversity, Ideology, and Teaching Writing" advocates for students' expressivist writing to be central in a composition course, and believes students "need to write to find out how much they know and to gain confidence in the ability to express themselves effectively" (186). ] Hairston also believes that teachers can design writing assignments to encourage "cross-cultural awareness" (191). In addition, Beth Daniell's approach in "Narratives of Literacy: Connecting College Composition to Culture" describes how studies in "little narratives [that] almost all examine literacy in particular local settings" championed by scholars who "seldom make theoretical statements that 32

claim to be valid for literate cultures in general or literate cultures in general," which would allow students to engage in cultural critique (403). Aaron Schutz and Anne Ruggles Gere's article for College English , "Service Learning and English Studies," described how Schutz's course, while it was mainly focused in service learning and local activism, engaged students in collaborative research and writing surrounding campus-wide issues, such as an instance of racial discrimination that occurred in the local student union; this allowed students to engage in cultural awareness as well as cultural critique (129-39). Furthermore, In Empowering Education, Ira Shor delineates a pedagogy in which the teacher facilitates discussion of generative themes produced by the students, using the example of his basic writing course with working-class students at "a low-budget college in New York City" several decades ago (10). The Freirean approach for teaching literacy and writing that Shor reviews in Empowering Education demonstrates how the generative words manifested themselves "[through] researching local issues and language in the students' communities. From the many linguistic and sociological items…the educators selected some key concerns—generative themes expressed through generative words" (55). In this framework, teachers and students research these items collaboratively, and once students have presented their research on problems in their community, they may begin to decide how they might analyze and upend power structures or rhetorical situations that contribute to and exacerbate such issues. For Shor's classroom, "[t]he generative themes [that have] emerg[ed]…from student culture have most often related to sex, abortion, drugs, family, education, careers, work, and the economic crisis" (56). Shor believes it is important to allow students to build a basis for problem-posing upon their prior knowledge and experiences to make it multicultural. Shor also reviews Paolo Freire's literacy project in Brazil as described in Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed , which enforces the idea that all people are creators of culture through visuals, oral discussion, and creation of word lists that are the basis for which the people begin to use language to express how the dominant culture operates, how their home culture operates, and how these systemic actions impact themselves and the world . In this way, both Freire and Shor believe problem-posing 33

education can be situated in multicultural practices as well as critical literacy practices. Shor insists "subject matter is best introduced as problems related to student experience, in language familiar to them" . Critical reception Overall, previous scholars' discussion of multiculturalism in the classroom seems to privilege "cross-cultural interactions" and valuing students' home languages as well as their cultural ideologies. However, in Donald Lazere's Political Literacy in Composition and Rhetoric , Lazere criticizes Hairston, Daniell, Schutz, Gere, and other scholars for their approaches because of their singular focus on localism in lieu of more "global" and critical approaches to the study of culture in the composition classroom. In addition, Lazere was critical of scholars' tendency to diminish the power of Edited American English (EAE) and misrepresent the power of the students' regional code While Lazere supports Shor's approach to multicultural critical pedagogy, he admits some level of discomfort with applying it in his own classroom especially with respect to how much responsibility and stock Shor places in students . Current approaches Lazere's critique of previous scholarship related to multiculturalism pedagogies, in Political Literacy in Composition and Rhetoric and elsewhere, has prompted current composition theorists, both in second-language writing and in the field of composition in general, to consider how multicultural pedagogies can embrace globalism as much as localism. For example, Lisa Eck's "Thinking Globally, Teaching Locally" describes how Eck teaches world literature courses in which students read cultural narratives and problematize them—in the article, she references her use of Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions in her composition classroom. Through her teaching, she is attempting to answer the question of how multicultural pedagogical practices could still be based in research, critical literacy, and problem-posing education. In her approach, she engages students in the kind of literary criticism that is necessary for analyzing and evaluating critical discourse: "I work to make hybrid postcolonial identities familiar, even analogous at times, to what we understand as the 34

process of identity formation for the average postmodern college student….I [also] use the Otherness of the cultures reproduced in foreign texts to estrange the American familiar" . The kinds of inquiry students are using to analyze the text are to show how the text is both "not about you" and "about you," and how these processes of identity formation are the kinds of processes necessary to critically evaluate public discourse. Furthermore, Jennifer S. Wilson's approach to critical pedagogy in second- language writing as she describes it in her article, "Engaging Second Language Writers in Freshman Composition: A Critical Approach," utilizes a perspective that provides opportunities for the types of writing necessary for students to critically analyze and evaluate ideologies entrenched in the dominant discourse, even as they are learning English as their second language. In other words, the four major elements of the course that Wilson describes, especially with respect to the ideas she offers for critical writing assignments, create alternative pathways for students to produce writing that has the potential to disrupt cultural and political ideologies represented in various avenues and niches of the dominant public discourse. For example, in addition to incorporating "local topics," Wilson provides options for students to "investigate language use in certain communities, societies, or cultures" as well as "investigating" the relationships between language and power Even more important, she insists that "[c]ritical pedagogy is concerned with minimizing the power differential between student and teacher; in composition classrooms one way for students to maximize their voices is to publish their work in authentic ways" If you’re interested in studying at a UK university or college, you’ll need to learn how to write using academic English. Academic writing can be very different from other types of English writing you may have done in the past. 2.4. How to Write an Essay Essays are common in elementary, middle, high school and college, and you may even need to write essays in the business world (although they are usually called "reports" at that point). An essay is defined as "a short piece of writing that expresses information as well as the writer's opinion." Writing 36

For some, writing an essay is as simple as sitting down at their computer and beginning to type, but a lot more planning goes into writing an essay successfully. If you have never written an essay before, or if you struggle with writing and want to improve your skills, it is a good idea to go through several steps in the essay writing process. For example, to write an essay, you should generally: Decide what kind of essay to write. Brainstorm your topic. Do research. Develop a thesis. Outline your essay. Write your essay. Edit your writing to check spelling and grammar. While this sounds like a lot of steps to write a simple essay, if you follow them you will be able to write more successful, clear and cohesive essays. Kinds of Essays The first step to writing an essay is to decide what kind of essay to write. There are several main structures into which essays can be grouped: Narrative Essays: Tell a story or impart information about your subject in a straightforward, orderly manner. Descriptive Essays: Focus on the details of what is going on. For example, if you want to write a descriptive essay about your trip to the park, you would give great detail about what you experienced: how the grass felt beneath your feet, what the park benches looked like, and anything else the reader would need to feel as if he were there. Persuasive Essay: Convince the reader of some point of view. Comparative Essay: Compare two or more different things. Expository Essay: Explain to the reader how to do a given process. You could, for example, write an expository essay with step-by-step instructions on how to make a peanut butter sandwich. 37

Knowing what kind of essay you are trying to write can help you decide on a topic and structure your essay in the best way possible. Brainstorming You cannot write an essay unless you have an idea of what to write about. Brainstorming is the process in which you come up with the essay topic. You need to simply sit and think of ideas during this phase. Write down everything that comes to mind as you can always narrow those topics down later. You could also use clustering or mind mapping to brainstorm and come up with an essay idea. This involves writing your topic or idea in the center of the paper and creating bubbles (clouds or clusters) of related ideas around it. This can be a great way to develop a topic more deeply and to recognize connections between various facets of your topic. Once you have a list of possible topics, it's time to choose the best one that will answer the question posed for your essay. You want to choose a topic that is neither too broad nor too narrow. If you are given an assignment to write a one page essay, it would be far too much to write about "the history of the US" since that could fill entire books. Instead, you could write about a very specific event within the history of the United States: perhaps signing the Declaration of Independence or when Columbus discovered the U.S. Choose the best topic from among them and begin moving forward on writing your essay. Research Once you have done your brainstorming and chosen your topic, you may need to do some research to write a good essay. Go to the library or look on the Internet for information about your topic. Interview people who might be experts in the subject. Keep your research organized so it will be easy for you to refer back to, and easy for you to cite your sources when writing your final essay. Developing a Thesis 38

Your thesis is the main point of your essay. It is essentially one sentence that says what the essay is about. For example, your thesis might be "Dogs are descended from wolves." You can then use this as the basic premise to write your entire essay, and all of the different points throughout need to lead back to this one main thesis. The thesis will usually be used in your introductory paragraph. The thesis should be broad enough that you have enough to say about it, but not so broad that you can't be thorough. Outlining Your Essay The next step is to outline what you are going to write about. This means you want to essentially draw the skeleton of your paper. Writing an outline can help to ensure your paper is logical, well organized and flows properly. Start by writing the thesis at the top and then write a topic sentence for each paragraph below. This means you should know exactly what each of your paragraphs are going to be about before you write them. Don't jumble too many ideas in each paragraph or the reader may become confused. You also want to ensure you have transitions between paragraphs so the reader understands how the paper flows from one idea to the next. Fill in facts from your research under each paragraph which you want to write about when you write the essay. Make sure each paragraph ties back in to your thesis and creates a cohesive, understandable essay. Write and Edit Once you have an outline, its time to start writing. Write from the outline itself, fleshing out your basic skeleton to create a whole, cohesive and clear essay. You will want to edit and re-read your essay, checking to make sure it sounds exactly the way you want it to. You want to: Revise for clarity, consistency and structure. Make sure everything flows together. Support your thesis adequately with the information in your paragraphs. 39

Make sure you have a strong introduction and conclusion so the reader comes away knowing exactly what your paper was about. Revise for technical errors. Check for grammar problems, punctuation and spelling errors. You cannot always count on spell check to recognize every spelling error as sometimes you can spell a word incorrectly but your misspelling will also be a word, such as spelling from as form. A lot goes in to writing a successful essay; fortunately, these tips for writing essays can help you along the way and get you on the path to a well-written essay. Fun Exercises to Improve Your English Writing Skills 1. Vocabulary story Do you have a vocabulary list of English words you’re learning? If you do, great! If you don’t, grab one from here or here . Now, write a story using as many of the words on the list as you can. Aim to include 10-20 words in your story, depending on how much time you have for this exercise. Have some fun with it and try to get the finished story to make sense. What you’ll learn: This exercise will help you understand and remember vocabulary words better for a number of reasons. Here are a few: Using words in a sentence ensures you understand how to use them. It’s easier to remember words in context (with some other words around them). The sillier your story, the more easily you’ll remember the words you used. (Memory experts use this method to remember the order of hundreds of playing cards!) Writing things down activates a different part of your brain, helping you remember vocabulary words even better. When your story is finished, you can share it with friends or on a blog. Encourage readers to point out any mistakes you made. 2. Picture story Grab the closest magazine to you and choose a random picture. Describe it in as much detail as you can. Don’t just write what you see. Imagine you’re in the picture. Think about what you would smell, feel or even taste. 40

You can also use this random image generator or browse Pinterest for ideas. What you’ll learn: We use descriptions in our daily life all the time: “I’m tired.” “Her dress is so stylish.” “This mocha tastes amazing.” Descriptions like these are used often in conversational English! Through this exercise, you’ll learn more about adjectives, feelings and perceptions (how we see and experience the world). 3. Structured summary Think back to the last book you read or movie you watched. Summarize it (say what happened briefly) using this formula: “[Somebody] wanted…but…so…” Confused? Here’s what it looks like in action: “Bruce Wayne wanted to save Gotham but supervillains were trying to destroy it, so he trained hard and became Batman.” Recognize that story? That’s a summary of “Batman Begins.” To use the formula in the same way, just fill in the blanks: Somebody: Who is the main character of the story? This character’s name can replace [Somebody] in the sentence above. Wanted: What is the character’s motivation? (In other words, what does he or she want?) This should come after the word “wanted.” But: What stands in the way of the character and what he or she wants? Put whatever it is after “but.” So: What does the character do to overcome this obstacle? Follow “so” with whatever they do.You can also add another part: Then: What happens after the character overcomes the obstacle (how is everything resolved)? Here’s another example: “Little Red Riding Hood wanted to visit her grandmother but when she got there she found a wolf instead, so she yelled for help and a passerby came to her rescue. Then everybody lived happily ever after!” What you’ll learn: This method can help you summarize almost anything. You might find it difficult to explain an entire story or book in just one sentence. That’s the great thing about it: You learn to explain a complex idea in a simple sentence. This skill 41

will be useful whenever you need to explain something concisely (in a simple and short way). For example, if you’re writing an email about a party, it will be easier for you to pick out the most important parts. You can also improve your reading comprehension with this summarization method. Every time you read a book or a story in English , you should summarize it to yourself, to make sure you understood it. If you can’t write a good summary, you might want to re-read the book or story more carefully. 4. Devil’s advocate Is there something you feel strongly about? Let’s say, for example, that you believe every person should learn a second language. Take this belief, and write about it from the opposite point of view. In this case, you would write about why everyone should not learn another language. In English, this is called “playing devil’s advocate.” That’s when you take a side you don’t actually believe in, just to see an issue from a different point of view. What you’ll learn: Aside from teaching an English skill, this exercise teaches a life skill, empathy . Empathy is the ability to understand how someone else feels, even if you don’t feel the same way. This skill is important to have, and writing can help you develop it. Aside from that, doing this exercise is a great way to learn how to express opinions in English . It might also get you using words you would not normally use, since you’re speaking from a different perspective. You might even learn something new about yourself! 5. Idiom soup An idiom is a saying that doesn’t actually mean what it says. For example, “it’s raining cats and dogs” doesn’t mean animals are really falling from the sky (it just means it’s raining very hard). A cliché is an extremely overused saying or phrase that’s used so often it’s not original anymore. Clichés are like idioms that have been used so often they’ve stopped being special, like saying “only time will tell” or “easy as pie.” 42

Write a story that uses as many clichés and idioms as you can ! You can find a list of clichés here , and a list of idioms here . What you’ll learn: Sometimes learning English feels like you “bit off more than you can chew” (took on a task that’s too big). A great way to build confidence is to know phrases and sayings you can use in many situations . Using clichés and idioms will build your vocabulary and ensure that when you hear them spoken by a native, you’ll know exactly what they mean. 6. It was a dark and stormy night Grab the closest book to you and open to the first page. What’s the first sentence? A good first sentence sets up the story and makes you want to keep reading. Some first sentences are classics, like the opening line to George Orwell’s “1984”: “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Some others…don’t do the job as well. In fact, one first sentence was so absolutely terrible, that it started an entire competition. Called The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest , it encourages everyone to send in their best worst first lines. Conclusion You now have a solid foundation of skills and strategies you can use to succeed in university or college. The remainder of this book will provide you with guidance on specific aspects of writing, ranging from grammar and style conventions to how to write a research paper. For any writing assignment, use these strategies: 43

Plan ahead. Divide the work into smaller, manageable tasks, and set aside time to accomplish each task in turn. Make sure you understand the assignment requirements. If necessary, clarify the requirements with your instructor. Think carefully about the purpose of the writing, the intended audience, the topics you will need to address, and any specific requirements of the writing form. Complete each step of the writing process. With practice, using this process will come automatically to you. Use the resources available to you. Remember that most schools have specific services to help students with their writing. Following the steps of the writing process helps students complete any writing assignment more successfully. To manage writing assignments, it is best to work backward from the due date, allotting appropriate time to complete each step of the writing process.Setting concrete long- and short-term goals helps students stay focused and motivated.A variety of resources are available to help students with writing and with other aspects of post- secondary life. You will develop some proficiency in a few key areas of ‘academic’ grammar, learn about the stages in essay writing, and produce an essay of your own. We will teach you how to organise an essay, use academic writing style and cover key areas of grammar, so that by the end of the course you are able to write a good, basic academic essay. Throughout the course, we will analyse some examples of academic writing that have been produced by some of our former students, to show the improvements that can be made to an essay. These improvements are made by guiding and instructing the writer in the areas of content, organisation, language and the process of planning and drafting an essay. We will provide you with the tools to evaluate your own writing and the writing of others, as well as clarifying some key language areas commonly used in academic writing. 44

If you’ve ever had a job interview, you know how scary it can be. Writing a silly scene like this might make you feel a little better the next time you do an interview. Then you can think, “Well, at least it wasn’t as bad as in that dialogue I wrote!” Of course, this exercise also teaches some English skills (and not just life skills). It’s a good way to practice writing dialogue, and to focus on how people speak . In this dialogue, you get a chance to use professional English, conversational English and even English slang. Use this as a chance to experiment! You’re now a budding (developing) writer, one step closer to English mastery. By improving your English writing skills, you’re improving your general English skills. Don’t forget to include writing in your studies from now on! 45
