INTRODUCTION Language is a means of forming and storing ideas as reflections of reality and exchanging them in the process of human intercourse. Language is social by nature; it is inseparably connected with the people who are its creators and users; it grows and develops together with the development of society 1 . On December 10, 2012 there was released the decree of the president of Uzbekistan № 1875 about the development of the system of teaching foreign languages. This decree gives a language learner great amount of opportunities, and at the same time puts concrete tasks for teachers of foreign languages. social, economic society. It forms the society capable quickly to adapt in the modern world. This qualification paper is dedicated to the study of English proper nouns. The development of proper nouns as socio – historical and language category is closely connected with the main stages of social and economic development of mankind. Proper noun has always drawn attention of simple inhabitants and professional researchers. Today proper nouns are studied by representatives of the diversified sciences (linguists, geographers, historians, ethnographers, psychologists, literary, critics). However, first of all proper nouns are steadfastly investigated by linguists as any name is the word entering into system of language, formed under laws of language and used in speech. The theme of the qualification paper is “ Pragmatics of the phraseological units with proper noun ( on the material of English and Uzbek languages). The actuality of the qualification paper that till now the problem of the nature and functioning of proper nouns was not exposed to detailed research, as has caused a choice of a theme of our research. The aim of our qualification paper is complex studying the use of proper nouns and its properties in English and Uzbek language. According to this main aim following particular tasks are put forward: - to analyze the linguocultural features of the English and Uzbek phraseological units with proper nouns components. to show differences and similarities by comparing study of the linguocultural peculiarities of the phraseological units in both languages. According to this general aim the following particular tasks are put forward: 1) Revealing the ways of Phraseology being accepted as a linguistic discipline. 2) To define the notion of phraseological units. 4

3) To study morphological structure of English phraseological units with proper noun components. 4) To research syntactical structure of phraseological units denoting proper nouns in Modern English. 5) To reveal semantic peculiarities of the phraseological units with proper noun components. 6) To study Etymology of some phraseological units with proper noun components. 7) To study the grammatical peculiarities of phraseological units with proper noun components. 8) To reveal specific translational peculiarities of phraseological units with proper noun component. The main materials of this qualification paper are taken from different books on phraseology such as А . В . Кунин , « Фразеология современного английского языка », « Англо – русский фразеологический словарь », “Something to crow about”, Шавкат Рахматуллаев « Ў збек тилининг фразеологик изо ҳ ли лу ғ ати ». The object of this research is the phraseological units with proper noun components and sayings in modern English. The subject matter of research is proper nouns and their use in English and Uzbek languages. The analyzed products are an interesting source of enrichment of our knowledge in the field of linguistics. The novelty of this qualification paper is that we have studied, analyzed and worked out a new system, using different works done before us and we shared our opinions on the problem of phraseological units with proper nouns components in English and Uzbek languages for the first time. To investigate the research work more clearly lots of methods have been used in this work. The methods used during research: analytical, grammatical and comparative. 5

The theoretical value of this qualification paper is that theoretical position of the paper can be used in delivering lectures on lexicology of the English and Uzbek languages. The structure of the qualification paper consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusion and the list of the used literature. The introduction is about the brief plot of the qualification paper theme and also it gives the information about the structure of the qualification paper. Chapter 1 deals with the problems of proper nouns in English. Chapter 2 is dedicated to the investigate the phraseological units with the component “denoting names”. Chapter 3 is devoted the problems of teaching English phraseological units to intermediate and advanced level students. The list of the used literature follows the conclusion. 6

Chapter I. Review of the linguistic literature on the problems of proper nouns in English 1.1. The proper nouns in the theory of the English language Naming a single entity is one of the basic speed, acts, included by Searle in the class of declaratives, alongside declaring war, dismissing and bequeathing. People and peaces, pets and hurricanes, and festivities, institution and commercial products, works of art and shops are given a name. Naming serves to highlight entities that play a role in people’s daily life, and to establish and maintain an individually in a society. Objects of analysis of onomastic people’s names, proper nouns have been investigated by philosophers, logicians, antropologists and psychologists, but only sporadically by linguists: e.g. with different approaches and concerns, Sloat , Holino, Allerton, Marmariday, Gary – Prieur, Tse. It is generally agreed among linguists that proper nouns are a universal linguists category. Their status and function is theoretical issue debated by many scholars, whose views are discussed in Caroll, Coats and Van Langendock. The topic is complex and controversial and the account given will be brief and schematic; this means that some aspects will be considered. Proper Nouns (PNs) constitute a system organized according to criteria varying across cultures, and provide an interpretation of the society of which they are the expression. They are linguistic items fulfilling a referetial function, they refer to single entities existing in the real world. Like deictics, they are not dependent on the immediate situational context. Like nouns, PNs, constitute an open class of words and, hence, are lexical rather than grammatical; but, unlike nouns, they lack lexical meaning. Proper nouns ( also called proper nouns) are the words which name specific people, organizations or places. They always start with a capital letter.  Each part of a person’s name is a proper noun – Lynne Hand, Elizabeth Helen, Ruth Jones. 7

 The names of companies, organizations or trade marks: - Microsoft, Rolls Royce, the Round Table, www.  Given or pet names of animals – Lassie Triger Sam.  The names of cities and countries and words derived from those proper nouns – Paris, London, New York, England.  English Geographical and Celestial Names – The Red Sea, Alpha Centauri, Mars.  Monuments, buildings, meeting rooms – The Taj Mahal, The Eiffel Tower, Room 222.  Historical events, documents, law, and periods – The Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, World War 1.  Month, days of week, holidays – Monday, Christmas, December.  Religions, deities, scriptures – God, Christ, Jehovah, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, the Bible, the Torah, the Koran.  Awards, vehicles, vehicle models and names – The Nobel Peace Prize, the Scout Movement, Ford Focus, the Bismarck, Hoover. Let us row survey the main linguistic features of PNs in English. their first feature is the initial – capitalization in writing, whose function is to distinguish a PN from a common noun, e.g. Rosemary vs, rosemary. They are subject to some words formation process; for example, hypocorisms can be formed full first names, employing various mechanisms, as illustrated in (1). 1) Full from Hypoccrisms John Johnny (suffixation) Joseph Joe ( shortening) Richard Dick ( shortening and phonological modification) With regard to grammar, names raise varies issues. One issue concerns the internal structure of nouns, they can be mono – or polylexemic, sometimes 8

incorporating the article (e.g. London, John Smith, The Red Sea); personal names can be preceded by a title (e.g. Mr. Smith, Aunt Mary), whose status is rather controversial. A major issue is represented by the different uses of nouns. In their primary use as referring expressions, PNs can occupy the NP slot, as a in (2c) and occur in close oppositional structures, as in (2d); 2) a) He loves Mary b) They lived in Oxford c) I read that, Walter d) The poet Tennyson died early. In secondary uses, nouns can take on the semantic value. “entity called x” and have a plural form, as in (3). 3) There are few Alfreds in the class. They can occur with determines: the article the or a/ an, as (4 a-b), quantifies, as in (4c); possessives, as in (4d); demonstrative, as in (4e). We will discuss them completely. 4) a) I haven’t been in touch with the Joneses for ages. b) I’ve never met an Ophelia. c) I know three Ann Smith. d) My Jennifer has won the school prize again. e) Who’s this Penelope who’s been sending you emails? They can be modified by adjectives, restrictive relative clauses or PPs, as in (5), (6), (7), respectively: (5) He’s the famous George. (6) This is the Paris I prefer to forget. (7) The London of my childhood was different. To account for these data, analysts distinguish between the gramatical category proper noun having the syntactic status of NP, assigned to the names 9

in (2) and the category “ proper noun” having the status of common noun, assigned to the names in (3) – (7). Let us now consider the semantics of PNs, an issue much discussed from Mill onwards. They are diachronically motivated, and a meaningful etymon is found in most cases: e.g. family names derive from elements of common vocabulary referring to parentage ( son of Richard > Richardson) or, occupation ( miller > Miller). But they are synchronically opaque: as stated by Lyons “ it is widely, though not universally, accepted that proper nouns do not have sense”. Provided that they are elements fulfilling a refential function how the relation between PN and referent is established can be explained pragmatically. A PN is assigned to a given referent by some social convention, and encyclopedic information is associated with it in long – term memory. In particular, personal names may be attributed to more than one referent, yet, in discourse the encoder refers to a specific referent, situated in a given time and space. In order to understand which referent the encoder is referring to, the decoder must possess a competence of the name system as well as the chunks of encyclopedic knowledge associated with a name to establish a link between PN and referent. Only when the decoder retrieves associated information from his / her knowledge, the “ virtual” referent is actualized, and the PN becomes a “ rigid designator” ( a notion introduced by Kripke, let us now consider (8). 8) He saw Philip on the street corner. The decoder recognizes Philip as a PN, but does not possess the necessary to pair PN and referent. Yet, names can arouse expectations based on encyclopedic knowledge: so Philip is expected to be the first name of a male human being. Hence the decoder interprets the name as “male human being”, but it might refer to a dog. In short, PNs constitute a class of linguistic items sharing features with both noun and deiltics. Formally, PNs share some grammatical features with 10

common nouns, but differ from them in various respects. Both PNs and deictics lack lexical meaning and have a referential function; but, on the situational context and encyclopedic knowledge. In interpreting the PN, the decoder first has to recognize whether its use is referential or figurative, relying on the linguistic context, then she or he will activate encyclopedic knowledge or recur to her or his lexical competence, if the item is lexicalized. Finally, PNs refer to a “ fixed” referent, while deictics to a referent, that can vary according to the situational context. Another use of names is central to understand the phenomenon under discussion. PNs, in particular personal nouns, more rarely place names, are used figuratively as metaphors, similes, hyperboles and antonomasias, either in a creative way ( e.g. He is a new Hemingway) or as lexicalized items. In these uses, PNs have a descriptive function: they indicate some salient attribute on property of the referent of the name. They function as nouns, taking on both a denotional and a connotational meaning originated in a selection of salient bits of information extracted from encyclopedic knowledge about a referent. Consider the examples in (9). a ) She is playing Pollyanna. b) The war is becoming a Vietnam. In (9a), Pollyanna, referring to the chief character in the novel Pollyanna (1913) by E.Porter, denotes a person constantly or excessively optimistic. In (9b), Vietnam, referring to the country where US troops intervened, takes on the meaning “ disastrous military intervention”. Grammatically, proper nouns behave very much in the same way in the sentence as common nouns. There are, however, well-known co-occurrence restrictions that distinguish them from common nouns. The most important among them are: 1.Proper nouns (PN) do not accept demonstrative pronouns as determiner. One would not normally say This John just bought a car. However, 11

supposing there are several Johns out a particular one, you are already using John as a common noun meaning “ any person called John”. 2. PNs do not accept restrictive adjectives or restrictive relative clauses. In the sentence the Old Shakespeare felt the closeness of his death one is implicitly comparing one of several manifestations in time of the person called Shakespeare with the rest, therefore, one is using the word as a common noun in the grammatical sense. The some applies to sentences such as she in no longer the Eve she used to be. One may deny this only at the piece of more or less explanations about the character of the noun in question. Another way of patting this would be to say that we have to do with two homonymous words John or Shakespeare respectively, one of which is a proper noun, the other a common noun. When in a given speech situation we have a unique reference, we are dealing with a proper noun, otherwise with a common noun. 3.Opposition between definite and indefinite is neutralized in PNs ( a given PN either invariably takes zero article as in John, London. Or in the Strands the Haymarket. The Gueen Elizabeth). A seeming counter – example such as that is not the John I was talking about , is an instance of John being used as a common noun or proper is ultimately determined by situational factors. If in a given situation, there is a possibity of what looks like a proper noun having multiple referents ( this John, two Johns) we have to do with a common noun homonymous with a proper noun. 1.2. Phraseology as a branch of lexicology The linguists major concern with the treatment of the problems inherent in a course of Lexicology mainly from the synchronic angle. The diachronic approach which is, in the authors’ opinion, indispensable in any study of vocabulary occupies its due place in the book too. 12

This is based on the course of lectures in English Lexicology delivered by the authors for a number of years at the Moscow Maurice Thorez State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. The subject matter corresponds to the programme on English Lexicology issued by the USSR Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education. In preparing this work the authors have tried to take into consideration the latest achievements in linguistic science made in the Soviet Union and elsewhere. The authors’ indebtedness to various books and studies will be readily perceived from List of Books Extensively Used as well as from the authors quoted or referred to in the foot-notes. The factual material collected in some of the best graduation papers compiled under the authors’ guidance has also been made use of. It was pointed out above that Lexicology studies various lexical units: morphemes, words, variable word-groups and phraseological units. We proceed from the assumption that the word is the basic unit of language system, the largest on the morphologic and the smallest on the syntactic plane of linguistic analysis. The word is a structural and semantic entity within the language system. It should be pointed out that there is another approach to the concept of the basic language unit. The criticism of this viewpoint cannot be discussed within the framework of the present study. Suffice it to say that here we consistently proceed from the concept of the word as the basic unit in all the branches of Lexicology. Both words and phraseological units are names for things, namely the names of actions, objects, qualities. Modern English Lexicology aims at giving a systematic description of the word-stock of Modern English. Words, their component parts — morphemes — and various types of word-groups, are subjected to structural and semantic analysis primarily from the synchronic angle. In other words, Modern English Lexicology investigates the problems of word-structure and word-formation in Modern English, the semantic structure of English words, the main principles underlying the 13

classification of vocabulary units into various groupings the laws governing the replenishment of the vocabulary with new vocabulary units. It also studies the relations existing between various lexical layers of the English vocabulary and the specific laws and regulations that govern its development at the present time. The source and growth of the English vocabulary, the changes it has undergone in its history are also dwelt upon, as the diachronic approach revealing the vocabulary in the making cannot but contribute to the understanding of its workings at the present time. It has become a tradition to include on a course of Lexicology short section dealing with Lexicography, the science and art of dictionary-compiling, because Lexicography is a practical application of Lexicology so that the dictionary-maker is inevitably guided in his work by the principles laid down by the lexicologist as a result of his investigations. It is common knowledge that in his investigation the lexicologist makes use of various methods. An acquaintance with these methods is an indispensable part of a course of lexicology. Modern English Lexicology as a subject of study forms part of the Theoretical Course of Modern English and as such is inseparable from its other component parts, i.e. Grammar, Phonetics, Stylistics, on the one hand, and the Course of History of the English Language, on the other. The language learner will find the Course of Modern English Lexicology of great practical importance. He will obtain much valuable information concerning the English word-stock and the laws and regulations governing the formation and usage of English words and word-groups. Besides, the Course is aimed both at summarising the practical material already familiar to the students from foreign language classes and at helping the students to develop the skills and habits of generalising the linguistic phenomena observed. The knowledge the students gain from the Course of Modern English Lexicology will guide them in all their dealings with the English word-stock and help them apply this information to the solution of practical problems that may face them in class-room teaching. Teachers should 14

always remember that practical command alone does not qualify a person to teach a language. This textbook treats the following basic problems: 1. Semasiology and semantic classifications of words; 2. Word-groups and phraseological units; 3. Word-structure; 4. Word-formation; 5. Etymological survey of the English word-stock; 6. Various aspects of vocabulary units and replenishment of Modern English 7. word-stock; 7. Variants and dialects of Modern English; 8. Fundamentals of English Lexicography; 9. Methods and Procedures of Lexicological Analysis. The aim of these paragraphs is to summarise in brief the contents of the preceding section, thus enabling the student to go over the chief points of the exposition of problem or problems under consideration. Material for Reference at the end of the book and the footnotes, though by no means exhaustive, may be helpful to those who wish to attain a more complete and thorough view of the lexicological problems. Words put together to form lexical units make phrases or word-groups. It will be recalled that lexicology deals with words, word-forming morphemes and word-groups. We assume that the word is the basic lexical unit. 1 The smallest two- facet unit to be found within the word is the morpheme which is studied on the morphological level of analysis. The largest two-facet lexical unit comprising more than one word is the word-group observed on the syntagmatic level of analysis of the various ways words are joined together to make up single self-contained lexical units. The degree of structural and semantic cohesion of word-groups may vary. Some word-groups, e.g. at least, point of view, by means of, take place, seem to be 15

functionally and semantically inseparable. Such word-groups are usually described as set-phrases, word-equivalents or phraseological units and are traditionally regarded as the subject matter of the branch of lexicological science that studies phraseology. The component members in other word-groups, e.g. a week ago, man of wisdom, take lessons, kind to people, seem to possess greater semantic and structural independence. Word-groups of this type are defined as free or variable word-groups or phrases and are habitually studied in syntax. Here, however, we proceed from the assumption that before touching on the problem of phraseology it is essential to briefly outline the features common to various types of word-groups viewed as self-contained lexical units irrespective of the degree of structural and semantic cohesion of the component words. To get a better insight into the essentials of structure and meaning of word- groups we must begin with a brief survey of the main factors active in uniting words into word-groups. The two main linguistic factors to be considered in this connection are the lexical and the grammatical valency of words. It follows from the above discussion that word-groups may be also classified into motivated and non-motivated units. Non-motivated word-groups are habitually described as p h r a s e o l o g i c a l u n i t s or i d i o m s . It has been repeatedly pointed out that word-groups viewed as functionally and semantically inseparable units are traditionally regarded as the subject matter of phraseology. It should be noted, however, that no proper scientific investigation of English phraseology has been attempted until quite recently. English and American linguists as a rule confine themselves to collecting various words, word-groups and sentences presenting some interest either from the point of view of origin, style, usage, or some other feature peculiar to them. These units are habitually described as i d i o m s but no attempt has been made to investigate these idioms as a separate class of linguistic units or a specific class of word-groups. American and English dictionaries of unconventional English, slang and idioms and other highly valuable reference-books contain a wealth of proverbs, 16

sayings, various lexical units of all kinds, but as a rule do not seek to lay down a reliable criterion to distinguish between variable word-groups and phraseological units. Paradoxical as it may seem the first dictionary in which theoretical principles for the selection of English phraseological units were elaborated in our country. 3 The term itself p h r a s e o l o g i c a l u n i t s to denote a specific group of phrases was introduced by linguists and is generally accepted in our country. It should be pointed out that among the adherents of the referential approach there are some who hold that the meaning of a linguistic sign is the concept underlying it, and consequently they substitute meaning for concept in the basic triangle. Others identify meaning with the referent. They argue that unless we have a scientifically accurate knowledge of the referent we cannot give a scientifically accurate definition of the meaning of a word. According to them the English word salt, e.g., means ’sodium chloride (NaCl)’. But how are we to define precisely the meanings of such words as love or hate, etc.? We must admit that the actual extent of human knowledge makes it impossible to define word-meanings accurately. 1 It logically follows that any study of meanings in linguistics along these lines must be given up as impossible. Here we have sought to show that meaning is closely connected but not identical with sound-form, concept or referent. Yet even those who accept this view disagree as to the nature of meaning. Some linguists regard meaning as the interrelation of the three points of the triangle within the framework of the given language, i.e. as the interrelation of the sound-form, concept and referent, but not as an objectively existing part of the linguistic sign. Others and among them some outstanding Soviet linguists, proceed from the basic assumption of the objectivity of language and meaning and understand the linguistic sign as a two-facet unit. They view meaning as “a certain reflection in our mind of objects, phenomena or relations that makes part of the linguistic sign — its so-called inner facet, whereas the sound-form functions as its outer facet.” The outer facet of the linguistic sign is indispensable to meaning and 3 3 N.N.Amosova. intercommunication. Meaning is to be found in all linguistic units and together with their sound-form constitutes the linguistic signs studied by linguistic science. When comparing the two approaches described above in terms of methods of linguistic analysis we see that the functional approach should not be considered an alternative, but rather a valuable complement to the referential theory. It is only natural that linguistic investigation must start by collecting an adequate number of samples of contexts. On examination the meaning or meanings of linguistic units will emerge from the contexts themselves. Once this phase had been completed it seems but logical to pass on to the referential phase and try to formulate the meaning thus identified. There is absolutely no need to set the two approaches against each other; each handles its own side of the problem and neither is complete without the other. One of the levels at which grammatical meaning operates is that of minor word classes like articles, pronouns, etc. Members of these word classes are generally listed in dictionaries just as other vocabulary items, that belong to major word-classes of lexical items proper (e.g. nouns, verbs, etc.). 1. 3. Semantic properties of the phraseological units with proper nouns in the English and Uzbek languages Phraseology appeared in the domain of lexicology and is undergoing the process of secreting as a separate branch of linguistics. The reason is clear – lexicology deals with words and their meanings, whereas phraseology studies such collocations of words (phrasedogisms, phraseological units, idioms), where the meaning of the whole collocation is different from the simple sum of literal meanings of the words. 4 Phraseological units are stable word groups with partially or fully transferred meanings (“ to kick the bucket”, “ Greek gift”, “ drink till all;s 4 L . blue”, “ drunk as a fidder” (“ drunk as a lord, as a boiled owl”), “ as mad as a hatter ( as a march hare”). 5 The term “ phraseology” originated in Russian studies which developed from the late 1940’s to the 1960’s ( Cowie 1998). It is now currently used to refer either to the set of phraseological units in a linguistic studying them. Scholars have provided various definition of these units and various criteria to classifying them (Fernando 1996, Glaser 1998). Our working definition is the following as phraseological expression is a sequence constituted by at least two independent lexical items, stored as a unit in lexis. Its basic features, as mentioned in the literature, are: a) fixedness – it is a multiword unit, fixed in syntax as well as lexis: b) institutionalisation – it is a conventionalised unit, being the result of an initially novel expression: c) non- compositionality – its global meaning is not predictable from the meaning of its constituent word. Phraseological expression often carry connotations not present in their non- idiomatic synonymic expressions, and can have various functions in discourse: the informational, the evaluative, the situational, the modalising and the organizational function (Moon 1998). When classifying them, a useful distinction is that suggested by Glaser (1998), between word – like units designate a phenomenon, an object, an action, a process or state, a property in the real word; they embrace idioms and non – idioms ( i.e. restricted collocations), functioning as nouns, verbs, such as proverbs, maxims and formula, designate a whole state of affairs in the real world. The transition area between the two groups is occupied by units such as irreversible binomials, stereotyped similes, and fragments of proverbs. My analysis is focused on four phraseological types of which I am now going to give a short description. The first type is the “ idiom”, a word group having the structure of: a noun phrase ( e.g. a hot potato); a verb phrase (e.g. 5 5 А. И. Смирницкий . Значение слова. — Вопр. языкознания, 1955, № 2. С. bark up the wrong tree); an adjective phrase ( e.g. wet to the skin); a prepositional phrase ( e.g. beyond compare), or an adverb phrase ( by far) 6 . The second type is the “ irreversible binomial” ( Glaser 1998, 126-p) a pair of two words belonging to a same part of speech joined by and, and occurring in a fixed order (e.g. odds and ends). The third type is the “stereotyped simile” ( Moon 1998, 150-152-p) occurring in two structures. The first, typically occurring in predicative position, is (as) + Adj + as +NP (e.g. blind as a bat). The adjective, quite ordinary and gradable in most cases, is used literally, and the PN, used figuratively, serves to intenify the meaning of the adjective. The nouns in PN are entities ( humans, animals, objects) to which British people have conventionally attributed certain characteristics, the same characteristic expressed by the adjective. Over time, each NP has come to represent the epitome of individual characteristics. The other structure is V+like+ NP (e.g. eat like a horse), where the verb is used literally and the NP figuratively, to intensify the meaning of the verb. The fourth type is the “ formula” (Glaser 1998, p-127) a situation – based expression serving aspecific discursive function, typically occurring in spoken discourse (e.g. Good luck; It’s a small world). By surveying four idiom dictionaries (CCDI, LDEI, LID, ODI). There are some expressions, selecting the units labeled as “British” or without any geographical label: 69 idioms, 5 binomials, 11 similes and 6 formulas. For each unit, I provided usage labels, when found in dictionaries (“ derogatory”, “ euphimistic”, “ humorous”, “colloquial/ informal”, “slang”, “ formal”, “ dated”, “ old-fashioned”, “ archaic”, “ literary”). The manner of arrangement chosen to present the list of data is by phraseological type and syntactic structure. 6 Glaser, Rosamarie. Idioms: Noun Phrases. Idiomatic noun phrases can have various structure. The first type is the sequence (Det) + PN: a) Joe Bloggs b) A Florence Nightingale c) A Walter Mitty (inf) Joe Bloggs – ( Joe Doakes: amer Joe Blow). Заурядный, обычный человек; средний американец. Semantic peculiarities of the phraseological units with the proper nouns in the both languages The topic is semantic peculiarities of the phraseological units with proper nouns in the English and Uzbek languages, and every scholar has his opinion about the following topic who worked on phraseological units of English and Uzbek. So, we tried to open some peculiarities of this topic at first time. We classified phraseological units according to their meaning to the following phraseo- semantic groups. 1) Names of places which are named according to their geographical locations and history which is concerned with events, happened there. Analysis of investigating the phraseological units with the component “denoting names” 2.1 . Essential problems of phraseological units with the component “denoting names” Phraseology tends to reflect the correlation between language and culture. (Teliaya et al., 2001, p-55). Therefore, the language user needs shared knowledge in order to be able to understand given units properly. The knowledge of connotative meanings of components enables the language user to decode 31

Such nouns tend to be culturally loaded ( Taylor, 1998, p-104) and they may carry connotations of international, national or local character, they are observed in numerous idioms of biblical or mythological origins. What is important is the fact that nomina propria may function as core elements of phraseological units, which exploit their connotations. The names to be chosen as components of phraseological units are selected from the repertoire of proper nouns in use at a given period of time, some names are created as well; such nouns become a symbol of certain charecteristics. Proper nouns may be used predicatively to evoke some properties typical of the referent so at to ascribe a given quality commonly associated with them to other referents. Therefore, they become carries of cultural information which is of importance for decoding idioms containing nomina propria in discourse. It is worth noticing that proper nouns tend to be carrier of evaluation as well. Certain names carry positive evaluation, while others are of depreciative character. All proper nouns functioning in a given language from a mental map, which reflects the society’s evaluations attributed to nomina propria. In some cases the axiological load is so important that it is even registered in lexicographic works. For instance, the Van Dale school dictionary contacts the name Anita as a common noun meaning a fashion – sensitive, lower class youngster. The evaluative potential of the names discussed tends to be realized in phraseological units. 24 In fact all kinds of proper nouns can be components of phraseological units. However, anthroponyms and toponyms are observed to appear in phraseological units with highest frequency, while other proper nouns, such as: Zoonyms, chrematonyms, ideonyms, are not used so often as components of fixed units. 24 Schulz. From the point of view of sociolinguistics, proper nouns typical of a given culture are of particular interest, since the proper noun is a complex phenomenon, which can be analyzed on a historical, geographical, cultural, symbolical, linguistic, cross – linguistic and social planes. Such names are components of the collective memory of a given nation and they are very important from the point of view of the identity. Idiomatic expressions are treated as lexicalized item, since the sum of the meaning of components is not equal to the meaning of the whole unit. It should be stressed that numerous phraseologisms have been in use for such a long period of time that their motivation is not clear to modern language users. The English informal idiom, registrated in lexicographic works, “ Before you can say Jack Robinson” ( разг .before you can (or could)) say Jack Robinson ( before you can say knife) – extremely quickly a suddenly, contains a proper name which is optional, i.e. it is not the key component of the unit. The idiom belongs to phraseologic units of motivation somehow unclear to the contemporary English. Second, some idioms have motivations known to language users. For instance, the idiom out – Herod Herod, used in the spoken variety of English, is associated by the English with its origins. The connotations of the proper nouns appearing in realizations of such models have to be known to language users; otherwise, decoding is not possible, as the onym is the core component determining the meaning of the whole unit. Such units are rarely registrated (registered) in lexicographic works, since many of them are either of occasional character or disappear within short time, as they refer to the situation described in the moment of using the unit. The connotations carried by the onymic component are of different character, i.e. international, national or local. In the case of connotations both of international and national character it can be assumed that such units as well 34

as their modifications are decoded properly by the majority of language users. It is also corroborated by the research study conducted. In the case of idioms containing proprial components carrying connotations of local character the unit may be decoded correctly on condition that sufficient context is provided. For example, the model “ it’s a kind of type of game that only children are interestes in it” is found in a great number of languages and used to express the meaning “ Tom Tiddler’s ground”. In fact, on the example of the English language, one can show how the toponym changes depending on the region. There are a number of place names to be found in units realizing this schema: the curse of Scotland, also the place names reveals interesting aspects, place in UK: London, with its for and districts “ A London particular, from Dicken’s Bleak ( cause the man on the Clapham omnibus”); Newcastle – upon – Tyne, which was a centre of coal – mining ( Carry coals to Newcastle); Coventry, probably from an old story that soldiers on military duty there were greatly dislike by the people of the town ( send to Coventry ); Bristol, a major port trading with America in 17 th and 18 th century, hence the reference to ships newly painted, with scrubled surfaces and brass polished ( shipshape and Bristol fashion); the Cheshire country ( grin like a cheshire out, after the character in Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland): the Irish town of Kilkenny ( fight like Kilkenny cats); Blarney Stone near lork ( have kissed the Blarney Stone); the Forth Bridge in Scotland ( paint the Forth Bridge): -eastern countries related to the British colonial past: India, in like the Black Hole of Calcutta, referring to an event in Calcutta in 1756, when a large number of Europeans were put into one very small prison for a night; in the morning, only a few were still alive: China, in all lombard street to a China, from China to Peru. - places related to classical heritage: fiddle while Rome burns; between Scylla and Charybdis. 35

- Places on the Continent. Spain ( build castles in Spain) and Waterloo (melt one’s Waterloo). If the units appear in context the receiver finds sufficient to decode the meaning the substitution of the place names does not impede the process of decoding the unit. Otherwise the reciever may either have difficulty decoding the unit, or can decode it in a wrong way. For instance, one can understand the idiom literally, i.e the reciever can interpret the toponymic component as a name of the speaker’s destination. Therefore, in many cases the successful decoding of such units requires the knowledge of connotations evoked by the names. Numerous names become conventionalized metaphors and they function in the collective memory of a given group of language users. Phraseological units may undergo, in fact they tend to do, the process of transformation, which depends on the language user’s needs in a given communication context. The basic transformations are: replacements or substitutions, additions, permutations, deletions. In the case of decoding transformed idioms containing onymic components the key factor is the ability to decipher the metaphorical meaning of the proper noun. It should be stressed that decoding phraseological units should be analyzed in a socia – linguo – cultural perspective, since it is of complex nature. The process of decoding differs in individual process are analyzed, since the reciever is characterized by a set of parameters, such as: age, sex, education, interests and hobbies, social background and others. Decoding phraseological units labeled bookish, in lexicographic works, such as; Danaides’ barrel and (lit) Deianeira’s shirt, differs quality in two groups of students which were asked to explain the meaning of the units given. The vast majority of English philology students as many as 94% could do the task correctly. The later group of respondents was also able to provide information on the origins of the unit. The difference can be explained by the fact that the 36

units analyzed, very rare and appearing almost exclusively in the written variety of the language, originated from Greek mythology with which students of English philology well familiar. It is worth mentioning that onyms of distictive connotations, well- set in the collective memory of a given language users may come an element around which new phraseological idioms of different degree of fixedness will be grouped. Therefore, such idioms require a proper lexicographic description including the information regarding the connotations of the onym. Such a description facilitates greatly the process of interpretation and translation. To sum up, it should be emphasized that more comprehensive studies are necessary to give more insight into decoding phraseological units viewed as a socia – linguistic problem. Considering the names in phraseological expressions, we can note a predominance of personal over place names ( unsurpringly given the anthropocentricity of language); within the former, a predominance of male over female names and first names over family names, with a number of hypocorisms. The very low presence of female names is motivated by socia – cultural factors: in society, men played ( and still play) a more active role than women. Among them, can be found: Alice in Wonderland, Florence Nightingle, Mrs. Grundy, Aunt Sally, plain Jone, Pandora, ( Darby and) Joan, Fanny Adams. They are usually employed to convey a negative or not wholly positive evaluation. With regard to the presence of hypocorisms derived from very common first names ( Bob, Dick, Harry, Joe, Jack, Larry, Mike, Tom), it seems to be a culture- specific feature of English phraseology; for example, hypocorisms are rarely found in Italian phraseology. In particular, Mike and Mickey are now the generic name for an Irishman; Jack has come to denote any individual person and also occurs in compounds, denoting types of person ( e.g. Jack- in- 37

office, Jack- the- lad), objects ( e.g. Jack- in- box, Jack- a- lent, Jack-o- lantern), plants ( Jack- in- the- pulpit) and animals (Jackdaw). An overview of the personal names involved in the expressions indicate the following types of sources: - the Bible: doubting Thomas, Judas kiss, the mark of Cain, David and Goliath, like Daniel in the lion’s den; old as Adam; - literary texts: internationally known works (Alladin’s cave from The Arabian Nights); famous British coorks, by Shakespeare (be like Hamlet without the prince), Stevenson ( Jekyll and Hide), Caroll (Alice in Wonderland), Mary Shelly (Frankenstein’s monster); more marginal works, by James Thurber (Walter Mistry), and Tom Morton ( Mrs Grundy); - classical heritage, i.e. mythology and figures of Greek and Roman antiquity: Pandora’s box; Achille’s heel, Nessus’ shirt, Midas touch, rich as Craesus, Damon and Pythias; appeal to Ceaser; - popular culture: Darby and Joan (after a couple mentioned in an 18 th – century ballad); pleased as Punch ( after Mr. Punch, from the traditional children’s “puppet show”, “Punch and Judy”); Colonel Blimp (after a character in newspaper cartoons created by David Lowe in the late 1930): Aunt Sally (referring to the figure of an old woman’s head, used in fairgrounds and fates as a target for balls or other objects); Tom Taddler’s ground ( a children’s game); Uncle Tom Cobley and all ( Uncle Tom Cobley is the last of a long list of men in the English song: “Widdecombe Fair”); - real people, rarely legendary figures: Florence Nightingale ( after the famous nurse ( 1820- 1910) who served in military hospitals during the Crieman War); Nobson’s Choia ( after Thomas Nobson ( 1544- 1631) a livery man who gave his customers no choice, but made them take the nearest horse); peeping Tom ( after the tailor that, according to legend, peeped at Lady Godia when rode naked through Coventry); Morton’s fork ( after John Morton ( 1420- 1520), who was Archbishop of Canterbury 38

and chief Minister of Nenry VII; the expression refers to the argument used by Morton to extract loans), the Queensberry rules ( after Sir John Sholto Douglas, Marquis of Queensberry, who drew up a code of rules to govern boxing in 1869); according ti Hoyle ( after Edmond Hoyle (1672- 1769), barrister and writer of works on card games); Sweet Famny Adams (after the 8- year- old victim in a famous murder case in 1867; it is often abbreviated in speech to sweet FA, which is vulgarly understood to be a euphemism for the taboo phrase form happy as larry ( probably after the famous Australian boxer Larry Foley ( 1847- 1917); a Potemkin village ( after Count Potemkin ( 1739- 1791) who ordered a number of sham villages to be built for the empress Catherine II’s tour of Criema). In some cases, the sources of the PN is unknown (live the life of Riley, Murphy’s life). In one cases the PN is apparently a humorous interpretation of the letters stamped on army supply boxes during the War of, i.e. U.S. The collected expressions exemplify the two mechanisms exploited in the use of PNs in phraseology: on one hand, the use of very common names (e.g. keep up with the Joneses, where Jones, one of the most frequent family names, is used as a generic name for one’s neighbours); on the other hand, the “ cultural allusion”, i.e. the reference to people and places the members of British culture are ( or were) familiar with. In this case, devotational ( and connotational) meaning is established extracting salient bits of information from world knowledge associated with each of them. 2.2. Procedures of investigating the phraseological units with proper noun components in the Uzbek language We classified phraseological units according to their meaning to the following phraseo – semantic groups. 1) people’s name Aql – Hasan, odob – Husan. 39

Asadda oralab ye, Sunbulada saralab 26 Names, which are given to person or places are called proper names, so they are divided into several groups: 1) person’s name, surname, nickname: Rahim Mahmudov, Oybek Foniy. 2) given to animals: Olapar, Tortkoz, Boychibor: 3) geographical locations ( including names of streets and continents): Navoiy kochasi, Toshkent shahri, Pomir togi, Osiyo qit’asi: 4) offices and work-places or center’s names: Ozbekiston Respublikasi, Markaziy bank, Nizomiy nomli TDAU. 5) names of books, magazines, newspapers, movies, spectacl: “Otkan kunlar” romani, “ Ma’rifat” gazetasi 5)water-places and buildings’ names: Amudaryo, Orol dengizi, Katta Fargona kanali: 7) historical events, holidays’ names: Mustaqillik kuni, Navruz bayrami: 8) astronomic terms, especially planets, methoors, astreod’s Yupiter, Saturn, Somon yoli. Many proper names are derived from common nouns or another parts of speech, e.g.: Polat ( turdosh ot), Guzal ( sifat), Sakson ota ( son), Kimsan (olmosh), Sotiboldi ( fe’l), Kopaysin ( ravish). But sometimes proper names are used like amper (tok olchovi), Xosiyatxon ( atlas turi). 2.3. Phraseological units with the component “a man” in English and problems of their translation into Uzbek The current definition of phraseological units as highly idiomatic word-groups which cannot be freely made up in speech, but are reproduced as ready-made units has been subject to severe criticism by linguists of different schools of thought. The main objections and debatable points may be briefly outlined as follows: The definition is felt to be inadequate as the concept r e a d y - m a d e u n i t s seems to be rather vague. In fact this term can be applied to a variety of heterogeneous linguistic phenomena ranging from word-groups to sentences (e.g. proverbs, sayings) and also quotations from poems, novels or scientific treatises all of which can be described as ready-made units. Frequent discussions have also led to questioning this approach to phraseology from a purely semantic point of view as t h e c r i t e r i o n of i d i o m a t i c i t y is found to be an inadequate guide in singling out phraseological units from other word- groups. Borderline cases between idiomatic and non-idiomatic word-groups are so numerous and confusing that the final decision seems to depend largely on one’s “feeling of the language”. This can be proved by the fact that the same word-groups are treated by some linguists as idiomatic phrases and by others as free word-groups. For example, such word-groups as take the chair — ‘preside at a meeting’, take one’s chance — ‘trust to luck or fortune’, take trouble (to do smth) — ‘to make efforts’ and others are marked in some of the English dictionaries as idioms or phrases, whereas in others they are found as free word-groups illustrating one of the meanings of the verb to take or the nouns combined with this verb. 41

The impracticability of the criterion of idiomaticity is also observed in the traditional classification of phraseological collocations. The extreme cases, i.e. phraseological fusions and collocations are easily differentiated but the borderline units, as for example phraseological fusions and phraseological unities or phraseological collocations and free word-groups, are very often doubtful and rather vaguely outlined. We may argue, e.g., that such word-groups as high treason or show the white feather are fusions because one finds it impossible to infer the meaning of the whole from the meaning of the individual components. Others may feel these word-groups as metaphorically motivated and refer them to phraseological unities. The connotations carried by the onymic component are of different character, i.e. international, national or local. In the case of connotations both of international and national character it can be assumed that such units as well as their modifications are decoded properly by the majority of language users. It is also corroborated by the research study conducted. In the case of idioms containing proprial components carrying connotations of local character the unit may be decoded correctly on condition that sufficient context is provided. For example, the model “ it’s a kind of type of game that only children are interests in it” is found in a great number of languages and used to express the meaning “ Tom Tiddler’s ground”. In fact, on the example of the English language, one can show how the toponym changes depending on the region. There are a number of place names to be found in units realizing this schema: the curse of Scotland, also the place names reveals interesting aspects, place in UK: London, with its for and districts “ A London particular, from Dickens’ Bleak ( cause the man on the Clapham omnibus”); Newcastle – upon – Tyne, which was a centre of coal – mining ( Carry coals to Newcastle); Coventry, probably from an old story that soldiers on military duty there were greatly dislike by the people of the town ( send to Coventry ); Bristol, a major port trading with America in 17 th and 42

18 th century, hence the reference to ships newly painted, with scrubled surfaces and brass polished ( shipshape and Bristol fashion); the Cheshire country ( grin like a Cheshire out, after the character in Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland): the Irish town of Kilkenny ( fight like Kilkenny cats); Blarney Stone near lork ( have kissed the Blarney Stone); the Forth Bridge in Scotland ( paint the Forth Bridge): -eastern countries related to the British colonial past: India, in like the Black Hole of Calcutta, referring to an event in Calcutta in 1756, when a large number of Europeans were put into one very small prison for a night; in the morning, only a few were still alive: China, in all Lombard street to a China, from China to Peru. - places related to classical heritage: fiddle while Rome burns; between Scylla and Charybdis; - places on the Continent. Spain (build castles in Spain) and Waterloo (melt one’s Waterloo). If the units appear in context the receiver finds sufficient to decode the meaning the substitution of the place names does not impede the process of decoding the unit. Otherwise the receiver may either have difficulty decoding the unit, or can decode it in a wrong way. For instance, one can understand the idiom literally, i.e. the receiver can interpret the toponymic component as a name of the speaker’s destination. Therefore, in many cases the successful decoding of such units requires the knowledge of connotations evoked by the names. Numerous names become conventionalized metaphors and they function in the collective memory of a given group of language users. Phraseological units may undergo, in fact they tend to do, the process of transformation, which depends on the language user’s needs in a given communication context. The basic transformations are: replacements or substitutions, additions, permutations, deletions. In the case of decoding transformed idioms containing toponymic components the key factor is the ability to decipher the metaphorical meaning of the proper noun. 43

It should be stressed that decoding phraseological units should be analyzed in a social – lingo – cultural perspective, since it is of complex nature. The process of decoding differs in individual process are analyzed, since the receiver is characterized by a set of parameters, such as: age, sex, education, interests and hobbies, social background and others. Decoding phraseological units labeled bookish, in lexicographic works, such as; Danaides’ barrel and (lit) Deianeira’s shirt, differs quality in two groups of students which were asked to explain the meaning of the units given. The vast majority of English philology students as many as 94% could do the task correctly. The later group of respondents was also able to provide information on the origins of the unit. The difference can be explained by the fact that the units analyzed, very rare and appearing almost exclusively in the written variety of the language, originated from Greek mythology with which students of English philology well familiar. It is worth mentioning that norms of distinctive connotations, well- set in the collective memory of a given language users may come an element around which new phraseological idioms of different degree of fixedness will be grouped. Therefore, such idioms require a proper lexicographic description including the information regarding the connotations of the onyx. Such a description facilitates greatly the process of interpretation and translation. To sum up, it should be emphasized that more comprehensive studies are necessary to give more insight into decoding phraseological units viewed as a social – linguistic problem. Translating a phraseological unit is not an easy matter as it depends on several factors: different combinability of words, homonymy, synonymy, polysemy of phraseological units and presence of falsely identical units, which makes it necessary to take into account of the context. Besides, a large number of phraseological units have a stylistic-expressive component in meaning, which usually has a specific national feature. The afore-cited determines the necessity to get acquainted with the main principles of the general theory of phraseology. The following types of phraseological units may be observed: presumes and idioms. A unit of constant context, consisting of a dependent and a consonant indicators may be called a phraseme. An idiom is a unit of constant context which is characterized by an integral meaning of the whole and by weakened meanings of the components, and in which the dependant and the indicating elements are identical and equal to the whole lexical structure of the phrase. Any type of phraseological unit can be presented as a definite micro- system. In the process of translating phraseological units functional adequate linguistic units are selected, 28 by comparing two specific linguistic principles. These principles reveal elements of likeness and distinction. Certain parts of these systems may correspond in form and content (completely or partially) or have no adequacy. Descriptive translation, A verbatim translation is possible when the way of thinking (in the phraseological unit) does not bear a specific national feature. 1. Essential problems of teaching English Lexicology Learning the words of a foreign language is not an easy business since every word has its form, meaning, and usage and each of these aspects of the word may have its difficulties. language allows us to distinguish the following groups of words: concrete, abstract, and structural. Words denoting concrete things (book, street, sky), actions (walk, dance, read), and qualities (long, big, good) are easier lo learn than words denoting abstract notions (world, home, believe, promise, honest). In teaching pupils a foreign language the teacher should bear this in mind when preparing for the vocabulary work during the lesson. At this stage we are concerned not only with students understanding the meaning of words, but also being able to use them appropriately, taking into account factors such as oral / written use of the language; degree of formality, style and others. Traditionally, the teaching of vocabulary above elementary levels was mostly incidental, limited to presenting new items as they appeared in reading or sometimes listening texts. This indirect teaching of vocabulary assumes that vocabulary expansion will happen through the practice of other language skills, which has been proved not enough to ensure vocabulary expansion. Nowadays it is widely accepted that vocabulary teaching should be part of the syllabus, and taught in a well-planned and regular basis. Some authors, led by Lewis (1993) argue that vocabulary should be at the centre of language teaching, because ‘language consists of grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalized grammar. ’There are several aspects of lexis that need to be taken into account when teaching vocabulary. 34 34 А . The implication of the aspects just mentioned in teaching is that the goals of vocabulary teaching must be more than simply covering a certain number of words 55

on a word list. We must use teaching techniques that can help realize this global concept of what it means to know a lexical item. And we must also go beyond that, giving learner opportunities to use the items learnt and also helping them to use effective written storage systems. Understanding how our memory works might help us create more effective ways to teach vocabulary. Research in the area, cited by Gairn’s offers us some insights into this process. It seems that learning new items involve storing them first in our short-term memory, and afterwards in long-term memory. We do not control this process consciously but there seems to be some important clues to consider. First, retention in short-term memory is not effective if the number of chunks of information exceeds seven. Therefore, this suggests that in a given class we should not aim at teaching more than this number. However, our long- term memory can hold any amount of information. Research also suggests that our ‘mental lexicon’ is highly organized and efficient, and that semantic related items are stored together. Word frequency is another factor that affects storage, as the most frequently used items are easier to retrieve. We can use this information to attempt to facilitate the learning process, by grouping items of vocabulary in semantic fields, such as topics (e.g. types of fruit). The techniques just mentioned can be used to greater advantage if we can diagnose learning style preferences (visual, aural, kinesthetic, tactile) and make students aware of different memory strategies. Meaningful tasks however seem to offer the best answer to vocabulary learning, as they rely on students’ experiences and reality to facilitate learning. More meaningful tasks also require learners to 56

analyze and process language more deeply, which should help them retain information in long-term memory. Forgetting seems to be an inevitable process, unless learners regularly use items they have learnt. Therefore, recycling is vital, and ideally it should happen one or two days after the initial input. After that, weekly or monthly tests can check on previously taught items. The way students store the items learned can also contribute to their success or failure in retrieving them when needed. Most learners simply list the items learnt in chronological order, indicating meaning with translation. This system is far from helpful, as items are de-contextualized, encouraging students to over generalize usage of them. It does not allow for additions and refinements nor indicates pronunciation. Teachers can encourage learners to use other methods, using topics and categories to organize a notebook, binder or index cards. Meaning should be stored using English as much as possible, and also giving indication for pronunciation. Diagrams and word trees can also be used within this topic/categories organization. The class as a whole can keep a vocabulary box with cards, which can be used for revision/recycling regularly. Organizing this kind of storage system is time-consuming and might not appeal to every learner. Therefore adapting their chronological lists to include headings for topics and a more complete definition of meaning would already be a step forward. In my opinion the most important aspect of vocabulary teaching for advanced learners is to foster learner independence so that learners will be able to deal with new lexis and expand their vocabulary beyond the end of the course. Therefore guided discovery, contextual guesswork and using dictionaries should be the main ways to deal with discovering meaning. Guided discovery involve asking questions or offering examples that guide students to guess meanings correctly. In this way learners get involved in a process of semantic processing that helps learning and retention. Contextual guesswork means making use of the context in which the word appears to derive an idea of its meaning, or in some cases, guess from the word itself, as in words of Latin origin. Knowledge of word formation, e.g. prefixes and suffixes, can also help guide students to discover meaning. Teachers can help students with specific techniques and practice in 57

contextual guesswork, for example, the understanding of discourse markers and identifying the function of the word in the sentence (e.g. verb, adjective, and noun). The latter is also very useful when using dictionaries. Students should start using EFL dictionaries as early as possible, from Intermediate upwards. With adequate training, dictionaries are an invaluable tool for learners, giving them independence from the teacher. As well as understanding meaning, students are able to check pronunciation, the grammar of the word (e.g. verb patterns, verb forms, plurality, comparatives, etc.), different spelling (American versus British), style and register, as well as examples that illustrate usage. Another strategy for advanced learners is to turn their receptive vocabulary items into productive ones. In order to do that, we need to refine their understanding of the item, exploring boundaries between conceptual meaning, polysemy, synonymy, style, register, possible collocations, etc., so that students are able to use the item accurately. We must take into account that a lexical item is most likely to be learned when a learner feels a personal need to know it, or when there is a need to express something to accomplish the learner’s own purposes. Therefore, it means that the decision to incorporate a word in ones productive vocabulary is entirely personal and varies according to each student’s motivation and needs. Logically, production will depend on motivation, and this is what teachers should aim at promoting, based on their awareness of students needs and preferences. Task-based learning should help teachers to provide authentic, meaningful tasks in which students engage to achieve a concrete output, using appropriate language for the context. We could not talk about vocabulary teaching nowadays without mentioning Lewis, whose controversial, thought-provoking ideas have been shaking the ELT world since its publication. We do not intend to offer a complete review of his work, but rather mention some of his contributions that in our opinion can be readily used in the classroom. His most important contribution was to highlight the importance of vocabulary as being basic to communication. We do agree that if learners do not recognize the 58

meaning of keywords they will be unable to participate in the conversation, even if they know the morphology and syntax. On the other hand, we believe that grammar is equally important in teaching, and therefore in our opinion, it is not the case to substitute grammar teaching with vocabulary teaching, but that both should be present in teaching a foreign language. Lewis himself insists that his lexical approach is not simply a shift of emphasis from grammar to vocabulary teaching, as ‘language consists not of traditional grammar and vocabulary, but often of multi-word prefabricated chunks’. Chunks include collocations, fixed and semi-fixed expressions and idioms, and according to him, occupy a crucial role in facilitating language production, being the key to fluency. An explanation for native speakers’ fluency is that vocabulary is not stored only as individual words, but also as parts of phrases and larger chunks, which can be retrieved from memory as a whole, reducing processing difficulties. On the other hand, learners who only learn individual words will need a lot more time and effort to express themselves. Consequently, it is essential to make students aware of chunks, giving them opportunities to identify, organize and record these. Identifying chunks is not always easy, and at least in the beginning, students need a lot of guidance. Hill explains that most learners with ‘good vocabularies’ have problems with fluency because their ‘collocational competence’ is very limited, and that, especially from Intermediate level, we should aim at increasing their collocational competence with the vocabulary they have already got. For Advance learners he also suggests building on what they already know, using better strategies and increasing the number of items they meet outside the classroom. The idea of what it is to ‘know’ a word is also enriched with the collocational component. According to Lewis ‘being able to use a word involves mastering its collocational range and restrictions on that range’. I can say that using all the opportunities to teach chunks rather than isolated words is a feasible idea that has 59

been working well in my classes, and which is fortunately coming up in new course books we are using. However, both teachers and learners need awareness raising activities to be able to identify multi-word chunks. Apart from identifying chunks, it is important to establish clear ways of organizing and recording vocabulary. According to Lewis, ‘language should be recorded together which characteristically occurs together’, which means not in a linear, alphabetical order, but in collocation tables, mind-maps, word trees, for example. He also suggests the recording of whole sentences, to help contextualization, and that storage of items is highly personal, depending on each student’s needs. We have already mentioned the use of dictionaries as a way to discover meaning and foster learner independence. Lewis extends the use of dictionaries to focus on word grammar and collocation range, although most dictionaries are rather limited in these. Lewis also defends the use of ‘real’ or ‘authentic’ material from the early stages of learning, because ‘acquisition is facilitated by material which is only partly understood’. Although he does not supply evidence for this, I agree that students need to be given tasks they can accomplish without understanding everything from a given text, because this is what they will need as users of the language. He also suggests that it is better to work intensively with short extracts of authentic material, so they are not too daunting for students and can be explored for collocations. Finally, the Lexical Approach and Task-Based Learning have some common principles, which have been influencing foreign language teaching. Both approaches regard intensive, roughly-tuned input as essential for acquisition, and maintain that successful communication is more important than the production of accurate sentences. We certainly agree with these principles and have tried to use them in our class. 3.2. How to teach vocabulary at school 60

Since every word has its form, meaning, and usage to present a word means to introduce to pupils its forms (phonetic, graphic, structural, and grammatical), and to explain its meaning, and usage. The techniques of teaching pupils the pronunciation and spelling of a word are as follows: (1) pure or conscious imitation; (2) analogy; (3) transcription; (4) rules of reading. Since a word consists of sounds if heard or spoken and letters if read or written the teacher shows the pupils how to pronounce, to read, and write it. However the approach may vary depending on the task set (the latter depends on the age of pupils, their progress in the language, the type of words, etc.). For example, if the teacher wants his pupils to learn the word orally first, he instructs them to recognize it when hearing and to articulate the word as an isolated element (ail book) and in a sentence pattern or sentence patterns alongside with other words. (This is a book. Give me the book. Take the book. Put the book on the table, etc.) As far as the form is concerned the pupils have but two difficulties to overcome: to learn how to pronounce the word both separately and in speech; and to recognize it in sentence patterns pronounced by the teacher, by his classmates, or by a speaker in case the tape recorder is used. 35 If the teacher wants his pupils to learn the word during the same lesson not only for hearing and speaking but for reading and writing as well, he shows them how to write and read it after they perform oral exercises and can recognize and pronounce the word. The teacher writes down the word on the blackboard (let it be spoon) and invites some pupils to read it (they already know all the letters and the rule of reading ‘on’). The pupils read the word and put it down in their notebooks. In this case the pupils have two more difficulties to overcome: to learn how to write and how to read the word; the latter is connected with their ability to associate letters with sounds in a proper way. books and read and write them independently; this work being done mainly as homework. The teacher then has his pupils perform various oral exercises during the lesson, he makes every pupil pronounce the new words in sentence patterns and use them in speech. Since this is the most difficult part of work in vocabulary assimilation it can and must be done during the lesson and under the teacher’s supervision. There are two methods of conveying the meaning of words: direct method and translation. The direct method of presenting the words of a foreign language brings the learner into direct contacts with them, the mother tongue does not come in between, it establishes links between a foreign word and the thing or the concept directly. The direct method of conveying the meaning of foreign words is usually used when the words denote things, objects, their qualities, sometimes gestures and movements, which can be shown to and seen by pupils, for example: a book, a table, red, big, take, stand up, etc. The teacher should connect the English word he presents with the object, the notion it denotes directly, without the use of pupils’ mother tongue. There are various techniques for the use of the direct meth¬od. It is possible to group them into (1) visual and (2) verbal. The first group involves the use of visual aids to convey the meaning of unfamiliar words. These may be: objects, or pic¬tures showing objects or situations; besides, the teacher may use movements and gestures. E. g., the teacher uses objects. He takes a pencil and looking at it says: a pencil. This is a pencil. What is this? It is a pencil. Is it a pencil? Yes, it is. Is it a pen? (The word is familiar to the pupils.) No, it is not. Is it a pen or a pencil? It is a pencil. The pupils do not only grasp the meaning of the word pencil, but they observe the use of the word in familiar sentence patterns. One more example. The teacher uses pictures for present¬ing the words small and big. He says: In this picture you can see two balls. (The balls should differ only in size.) This is a small ball, and that is a big ball. This ball is small, and that ball is big. Now, Sasha, come up to the picture and point to the small ball (the big ball). 62

Then the teacher shows another picture with two houses in it — a small house and a big house, and he asks another pupil to point to the small house, to the big house, and so on. The teacher may use gestures, for example, for conveying the meaning of stand up, sit down. He says: Lena, stand up. He shows with his hands what she must do. Lena stands up. Now, sit down. Again with the movement of his hands he shows the girl what she has to do. The other pupils listen to the teacher and w'atch what Lena is doing. Then many pupils are invited to perform the actions. 3.3. Finally, the Lexical Approach and Task-Based Learning have some common principles, which have been influencing foreign language teaching. Both approaches regard intensive, roughly-tuned input as essential for acquisition, and maintain that successful communication is more important than the production of accurate sentences. We certainly agree with these principles and have tried to use them in our class. CONCLUSION The research study and analysis conducted make it possible to draw the following conclusion: 1. Proper Names ( also called proper names) are called nouns presenting unique entities ( such as London, Jupiter or Johnny), as distinguished from common nouns which describe a class of entities ( such as city, planet or person). PNs are not normally preceded by an article or other limiting modifier ( such as “any”, “some”), and are used to denote a particular person, place, or thing without regard to any descriptive meaning the word or phrase may have. The common meaning of the word or words constituting a proper noun may be unrelated to the object to which the proper noun refers. For example, 70

someone might be named “Tiger Smith” despite being neither a tiger nor a smith. For this reason, proper names are usually not translated between languages, although they may be transliterated. In English and most other languages that use the latin alphabet, proper nouns are usually capitalized. Languages differ in whether most elements of multiword proper nouns are capitalized ( e.g. American English House of Representatives). 2.From the point of view of decoding the meaning of phraseological units the status of the onymic components is very important. The onymic components may have various positions in the structure of the unit. In many cases it is the key component, while in others it may be devoid of connotations and qualified as optional. By the way, our paper is devoted to the phraseological units with proper name component viewed as socio-linguistic problem. Many idioms are motivated by linguocultural peculiarities which belong to the collective memory of a given nation. For instance, John Hancock. A John Weathercock might be a nice generic name for a certain type of policeman, but no such phrase seems to exist yet. John Hancock was President of the Continental Congress. Whether that was the reason why his signature is also the largest, or whether he was just bigheaded is a matter of conjunctive. Some say he added his name when all others had written theirs. Some points emerge from languages analysis. First, the largest group of expressions is constituted by idioms having the structure of noun phrases. Secondly, the personal and place names involved in phraseology are historically. Socially or culturally prominent British culture. Among them, there is a predominance of personal over place names, and within the former, a predominance of male over female names, and first names over family names with a number of hypocorisms. Thirdly, many units express evaluation. 71

With regard to the corpus search, the collected units results to be not common in discourse, even if they are widely known by users. For example, we can note the rarity of before you can say Jack Robinson or Judar kiss in use, but as lighted by Fernando, the functional value of an expression cannot necessarily be judged by its rarity in general use. The expression examined constitute a rich repertoire of researches potentially available to users, who can select the most appropriate expression according to their communicative needs for example, to add humor, to emphasize an idea, to express a negative evaluation indirectly. With regard to phraseological types, the most numerous group of expressions in constituted by idiomatic noun phrases. With regard to their to their context of use, most are informal, some are fairly literary. As to their function in discourse, formula have a situational function in that each is related to a specific context. Some of the other types convey information (e.g. not know someone from Adam): most express evaluation for example, by intensifying qualities ( rich as (Croesus) or processes (grin like a Cheshire cat). As pointed out by Moon evaluation may be counted on the encoder, who projects his/her personal (judgement, as in Jack of all trades or it may be centered on the culture at large, projecting collective norms of good and bad, as in Judas kiss. But the distinction is often difficult since a unit can encode both the speaker’s opinion and a reference to share values or norms, as in honest Joe. Many expressions convey a negative evaluation of people’s character or behavior, as in Colonel Blimp and Tiddle while Pome burns. In discourse, they seem to operate as politeness devices or euphemisms, expressing disapproval or criticism indirectly. Classifying semantic and structural features of phraseological units, we divided into 7 groups according to the structural features of them. 1. Noun phrase: Aunt Sally.2. Verb phrase: Open Pandora’s Box. 3. Prepositional: between Scylla and Charybdis. 4. Subordinate clause: before you can 72

say Jack Robinson. 5. Irreversible binomials: David and Goliath. 6. Stereotyped similes. Happy as larry, be like the Black Hole of Calcutta. 7. Formulae: (it’s) Murphy’s law ( used in order to say that the worst possible thing always seems to happen when it is most annoying. So, according to the semantic peculiarities phraseological units with proper nouns are divided into groups. 1) Names of places: The city of the talls 2) events which are considered negative: Pandora’s box 3) about hard work: a labour of Hercules 4) habits and cultural sphere about drinks. John Barkleycorn. Adam’s ale. 5) names of objects or things: The Star, Little Marry. 6) impossible work or situation which are related to time: at the Greek calends, since Adam was a boy. 7) about games: Tom Tiddler’s ground. 8) person’s name: Sherlock Holmes, Jack Horner. To sum up, it should be emphasized that more comprehensive studies are necessary to give more insight into decoding phraseological units viewed as a socio-linguistic, linguocultural problems.
