INTRODUCTION English became one of the important instruments of achievement of success in modern life. Knowledge of English is some kind of indicator of many qualities of the modern person. It is already just impossible to imagine the university graduate who hasn't knowledge of Basic English. The resolution of the first President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve system of foreign languages teaching” dated from 10 December 2012 1 ; the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013; The resolution No 4947 of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017 - 2021 years ” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution 2 “. Aiming to implement the resolution, some special people in the government are working on preparing and approving new teaching plans and programs taking into account introduction of foreign language teaching from the initial classes of the public schools, ensuring its execution are being carried out. According to recently established teaching plans, learners are likely to readily pick up any foreign languages providing that they themselves should search data concerning different topics they need. Due to this reason, large proportion of students, especially, those who are studying at the university devoted to language learning having been provided with tasks such as making project and coursework, library research, diploma works. Preparing scientific-pedagogical personnel, to produce highly qualified translators, scientific-research works in the country, engaged in the training and retraining of specialists in the field, as well as the areas of preparing research and teaching materials. The decree of our president gives much possibility to linguists for implementing various researches in the field of FL. Analysis of the English adjectives is significant from practical point of view. Training students in the context of professional and specific aspects of the foreign languages, and also studying its genres helps them in the future to establish correct intercultural communication, to be well informed about linguistics, obviously helps to improve literacy skills, to become among colleagues authoritative, stimulates professional growth in the professional environment. The actuality of the graduation work is to analyze English adjectives with some prepositions, the place and order of them and the function of adjectives. The aim of the graduation work: is to analyze and find examples how we can find out the adjectives, study the role and the function of adjectives, grammatical point of view of adjectives, put themin orer in sentences. The tasks of the graduation work:  To work out the problem of parts of speech;  To investigate the adjectives, one of the main part of speech in English grammar;  Grammatical overview of English Adjectives;  To study how adjectives make speech more expressive;  To work out approach to studying English adjectives with prepositions;  To work out approach to studying English adjectives with ‘to’-infinitive and ‘that’-clauses, -ed and -ing;  Substantivization of Adjectives;  To consider morphological and semantic features of adjectives in English language; 4

The scientific novelty of the work : The analyses of adjectives are used to carry the specific meaning we intend to convey in many different ways. I mean that the same adjective can have more than one meaning depending on the context. It is not the same in all situations. The subject of the graduation work: is devoted to the peculiarities of the adjectives in English and also, the analysis of various signs of the adjectives. The practical value : is that the material and the results of the given qualification work can serve the material for theoretical courses of lexicology, stylistics, typology as well as can be used for practical lessons in translations, home reading, conversational practice and current events. For realization of the above-stated problems, the following methods were used : the literature analysis, studying research works on the given problem. The structure of the graduation work explains the importance, purpose, significance and the objectives of the present work. The research work is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces theoretical fundamentals necessary for the practical part of the work. The first chapter concerns with the theoretical and methodological study of English adjectives and their basic classification. The graduation work contains relatively few analyses of linguistic data, and most of these data are from English. However, the principles discussed have wide cross-linguistic applicability. Chapter 2 analyzes English adjectives with the preposition ‘of ’ and with ‘to’-infinitive and ‘that’-clauses, with –ed and -ing; . The work contains two chapters, conclusion and the list of used references. 5

Chapter I The problem of Parts of Speech 1.1 Adjective is one of the Main Parts of Speech It is a very common statement that Modern English is an ana lytical language, as distinct from Modern Russian, which is synthe tical. Occasionally this statement is slightly modified, to the effect that English is "mainly analytical" and Russian "mainly synthe tical". These statements, on the whole, are true, but they remain somewhat vague until we have made clear two important points, viz. (a) what we mean by "analytical language'', and (b) what are the peculiar features distinguishing Modern English from other analytical languages, for instance, Modern French. It would be a gross error to suppose that English and French, being both analyt ical, are exactly alike in their grammatical structure. The chief features characterising an analytical language would seem to be these: 1) Comparatively few grammatical inflections (viz., case inflec tions in nouns, adjectives, and pronouns, and personal inflections in verbs). 2) A sparing use of sound alternations to denote grammatical forms. 3) A Wide use of prepositions to denote relations between objects and to connect words in the sentence. Prominent use of word order to denote grammatical rela tions: a more or less fixed word order. Analytical Types. These consi st i n using a word (devoi d of any l exical m eani ng of its own) to express some grammatical category of another word. There can be no doubt in Modern English about the analytical character of such formations as, e. g., has invited or is invited, or is inviting, or does not invite. The verbs have, be, and do have no lexi cal m eani ng of t heir own 6

in these cases. The lexi cal m eani ng of the formation resides in the participle or infinitive following the verb have, be or do. Some doubt has been expressed about the for mations shall invite and will invite. There is a view that shall and will have a lexical meaning. 1 We will not go into this question now and we will consider shall and will as verbs serving to form the future tense of other verbs. Thus, have, be, do, shall, and will are what we call auxiliary verbs, and as such they constitute a typical feature of the analytical structure of Modern English. Whi le t he existence of anal yt ical f orm s of t he Engl ish verb cannot be disputed, the existence of such forms in adjectives and adverbs is not nowadays universally recognised. The question whether such formations as more vivid, the most vivid, or, again, more vividly and most vividly are or are not analytical forms of degrees of comparison of vivid and vividly, is controversial. We can only say here that if these formations are recognised as analytical forms of degrees of comparison, the words more and most have to be numbered among the analytical means of morphology. The problem of parts of speech is one that causes great controversies both in general linguistic theory and in the analysis of sepa rate languages. We shall have to examine here briefly a few general questions concerning parts of speech which are of some importance for Modern English. The term "parts of speech" (as well as the corresponding terms in Russian, German, French, and other languages), though firmly established, is not a very happy one. What is meant by a "part of speech" is a type of word differing from other types in some gram matical point or points. To take the clearest example of all, the verb is a type of word different from all other types in that it alone has the grammatical category of tense. Thus, while it is perfectly rea sonabl e to ask, "What i s t he past t ense of t he wor d l i ve?" ( t he answer of course is, lived), it would make no sense to ask, "What is the past t ense of t he word cit y?" or "What i s t he past t ense of t he word bi g?" Those wor ds just have not got any past t ense, or any tense whatever, for 7

that matter: the notion of tense cannot be applied to them. Tense is one of the distinctive features characterising the verb as against every other type of word. However, the question is much less simple with reference to some other types of words, and a general definition of the principles on which the classi fication of parts of speech is based becomes absolutely necessary. We cannot her e go i nt o t he contr over sy over these pr inci pl es t hat has last ed a consi derabl e t ime now, and we will l im it our selves to stating the principles of our classification and pointing out some difficulties inherent in it. The principles on which the classification is based are three in nu mber, viz. (1) meaning, (2) form, (3) function. Each of these requires some additional explanations. 1) By meaning we do not mean the individual meaning of each separate word (its lexical meaning) but the meaning common to all the words of the given class and constituting its. essence. Thus, the meaning of the substantive (noun) is "thingness". This applies equally to all and every noun and constitutes the structural meaning of the noun as a type of word. Similarly, the meaning of the verb as a type of word is that of "process", whatever the indi vidual meaning of a separate verb may happen to be. We shall have to dwell on this later in considering every part of speech in detail. 2) By form we mean the morphological characteristics of a t ype of wor d. Thus, t he noun i s char act er i sed by t he cat egor y of number (singular and plural), the verb by tense, mood, etc. Several types of words (prepositions, conjunctions, and others) are charac terised by invariability. 3) By function we mean the syntactical properties of a typo of word. These are subdivided into two, viz. (a) its method of com bining with other words, (b) its function in the sentence; (a) has to deal with phrases, (b) with sentence structure. Taking, as we did previously, the verb as a specimen, we can state 8

that, for example, a verb combines with a following noun (write letters) and also with a following adverb (write quickly). As to (b), i. e. the syntactical function of a verb in a sentence, it is that of a predicate. 1 Two additional remarks are necessary before we proceed to the analysis of parts of speech in detail. In the first place, there is the question about the mutual relation of the criteria. We cannot be sure in advance that all three criteria will always point the same way. Then, again, in some cases, one of them may fail (this especially applies to the criterion of form). Under such circumstances, it may prove necessary to choose between them, i. e. to attach to one of them greater value than to another. We may say, provisionally, that we shall treat them in the order in which they have been enumerated, viz. meaning shall come first, form next, and function last. It will also be seen that the theory of parts of speech, though considered by most scholars to be a part of morphology, 2 cannot do without touching on some syntactical problems, namely on phrases and on syntactical functions of words (point 3 in our list of criteria). We shall regard the theory of parts of speech as essentially a part of morphology, involving, however, some syn tactical points. Adjective: (1) Meaning. The adjective expresses property. 1 (2) Form. Adjectives in Modern English are invariable. Some adjectives form degrees of comparison (long, longer, longest). (3) Function. (a) Adjectives combine with nouns both preceding and (occasionally) following them (large room, times immemorial). They also combine with a preceding adverb (very large). Adjectives can be followed by the phrase "preposition + noun" (free from dan ger). Occasionally they combine with a preceding verb (married young). (b) In the sentence, an adjective can be either an attribute (large room) or a predicative (is large). 9

It can also be an objec tive predicative (painted the door green). So far we have been considering parts of speech as they are usually termed and treated in grammatical tradition: we have been considering nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. Some modern linguists prefer to avoid this traditional grouping and terminology and to establish a classification of types of words based entirely on their morphological characteristics and on their ability (or inability) to enter into phrases with other words of different types. Thus, for instance the words and and or will fall under one class while the words because and whether will fall under another class. There is not much to be said about the English adjective from the morphological point of view. As is well known, it has neither number, nor case, nor gender distinctions. Some adjectives have, however, degrees of comparison, which make part of the morphological system of a language. Thus, the English adjective differs materially not only from such highly inflected languages as Rus sian, Latin, and German, where the adjectives have a rather com plicated system of forms, but even from Modern French, which has preserved number and gender distinctions to the present day (cf. masculine singular grand, masculine plural grands, feminine sin gular grande, feminine plural grandes 'large'). By what signs do we, then, recognise an adjective as such in Modern English? In most cases this can be done only by taking into account semantic and syntactical phenomena. But in some cases, that is, for certain adjectives, derivative suffixes are significant, too. Among these are the suffix -less (as in useless), the suffix -like (as in ghostlike), and a few others. Occasionally, however, though a suffix often appears in adjectives, it cannot be taken as a certain proof of the word being an adjective, because the suffix may also make part of a word belonging to another part of speech. Thus, the suffix -ful would seem to be typically adjectival, as is its anto nym -less. In fact we find the suffix -ful in adjectives often enough, as in beautiful, useful, purposeful, 10

meaningful, etc. But alongside of these we also find spoonful, mouthful, handful, etc., which are nouns. On the whole, the number of adjectives which can be recog nised as such by their suffix seems to be insignificant as compared with the mass of English adjectives. The only morphological problem concerning adjectives is, then, that of degrees of comparison. The adjective expresses the categorial semantics of property of a substance. It means that each adjective used in tile text presupposes relation to some noun the property of whose referent it denotes, such as its material, color, dimensions, position, state, and other characteristics both permanent and temporary. It follows from this that, unlike nouns, adjectives do not possess a full nominative value. Indeed, words like long, hospitable, fragrant cannot effect any self-dependent nominations; as units of informative sequences they exist only in collocations showing what is long, who is hospitable, what is fragrant. According to the theories of Dixon, R. M. W. “Where have all the adjectives gone?” 3 . Adjectives are the third major class of words in English, after nouns and verbs. Adjectives are words expressing properties of objects (e.g. large, blue, simple, clever, economic, progressive, productive, etc) and, hence, qualifying nouns. Adjectives in English do not change for number or case. The only grammatical category they have is the degrees of comparison. They are also characterized by functions in the sentence. The semantically bound character of the adjective is emphasized in English by the use of the prop-substitute one in the absence of the notional head-noun of the phrase. On the other hand, if the adjective is placed in a nominatively self-dependent position, this leads to its substantivi zation . E.g.: Outside it was a beautiful day, and the sun tinged the snow with red. Cf.: The sun tinged the snow with the red colour . Adjectives are distinguished by a specific combinability with nouns, which they modify, if not accompanied by ad juncts, usually in pre-position, and occasionally in post position; by a combinability with link-verbs, both functional and notional; by a combinability with modifying adverbs. Adjectives are the third major class of words in English, after nouns and verbs. The only grammatical category they have is the degrees of comparison. They are also characterized by functions in the sentence. An adjective is a word which acts to modify a noun in a sentence. While adjectives play a large role in many languages – such as English – many other languages have no adjectives at all. In English the set of adjectives is fairly well understood, though some people include other parts of speech – such as articles like the – in the class of adjectives. There are two main roles an adjective may take in a sentence, and with a few exceptions each adjective is able to take either role just as easily. The first role is to act as a predicative adjective, in which the adjective modifies a preceding noun as a predicate, linked by a verb. An example of a predicative adjective can be found in the sentence: A zebra is striped. in which the adjective striped is linked the subject of the sentence, zebra, by use of the copula verb to be in the is form. The second role an adjective may take is as an attributive adjective, in which it modifies a noun by being linked directly to the noun as part of the noun phrase. An example of an attributive adjective may be seen in the sentence: ‘The striped zebra pranced.’ in which the adjective striped is directly connected to the subject of the sentence, zebra. In English, most attributive adjectives precede the noun they are going to modify, while in many Romance languages the adjective comes after 12

the noun. So while in English we might say ‘The beautiful woman.’ in French we would say ‘Le femme jolie.’ which may be literally translated as ‘The woman beautiful.’ While most adjectives in English are able to be used just as easily either in an attributive or a predicative sense, there are some which are restricted to one role or the other. For example, the adjective sole can be used grammatically only as an attributive adjective, as can be seen in the sentence: This is the sole survivor. On the other hand, trying to use the adjective sole in the predicative role would result in the ungrammatical sentence: This survivor is sole. Other English adjectives, such as alone, may be used only as a predicative adjective, while attempts to use them attributively result in ungrammatical sentences. Adjectives may be modified by adverbs or adverbial clauses, but not by other adjectives. Many adjectives, however, can easily translate into corresponding adverbs simply by adding the ending to them. This can be seen in pairs such as quick/quickly and happy/happily. In English and many other languages, adjectives also have a correct and incorrect order, depending on the type of adjectives used. Most native speakers learn this order instinctively, and related mistakes are one of the most obvious signs of a non-native speaker. For example, using the adjectives red, little, and two with the noun books, most native English speakers would intuitively order the adjectives to form the sentence ‘The two little red books.’ To non-native speakers, however, it might seem just as intuitive to say ‘The two red little books.’ or even ‘The red two little books.’ both of which are immediately obvious as incorrect to a native English speaker. As mentioned earlier, not all languages use adjectives; some use other parts of speech instead to fill this role. Many Native American languages, for example, use verbs to fill the role that adjectives play in English, so that rather than ‘The woman is short.’ we are faced with something like ‘The woman is shorting.’ Languages that use nouns as adjectives are often more comprehensible to speakers of English, since our sentence formations can easily allow for metaphoric 13

description using only nouns, with a verb perhaps to flavor it, such as ‘The sun was a blazing inferno.’ instead of ‘The sun was hot.’ English also uses abstract nouns, for example to turn ‘An important statement.’ into ‘A statement of import.’ There is not much to be said about the English adjective from the grammatical point of view. As is well know, it has neither number, nor case, nor gender distinctions. Some adjectives have, however, degrees of со mparis о n, which make part of the morphological system of a language. In fa с t we find the suffix – full in adjectives often enough, as in beautiful, useful, purposeful, meaningful, etc. But alongside of these we also find spoonful. mouthful, handfu1, etc., which are nouns. О n the whole, the numbe г о f adjectives which с an be recognized, as such by their suffix seems to be insignificant as compared with the mass of English adjectives. 4 All the adjectives are traditionally divided into two large subclasses: qualitative and relative. E.g.: wood – a wooden hut; mathematics – mathematical precision; history – a historical event; table – tabular presentation; colors – colored postcards; surgery – surgical treatment; the Middle Ages – mediaeval rites. The nature of this «relationship» in adjectives is best revealed by definitional correlations. Cf.: a wooden hut – a hut made of wood; a historical event – an event referring to a certain period of history; surgical treatment – treatment consisting in the implementation of surgery; etc. Qualitative adjectives, as different from relative ones, denote various qualities of substances which admit of a quantitative estimation, i.e. of establishing their correlative quantitative measure. The measure of a quality can be estimated as high or low, adequate or inadequate, sufficient or insufficient, optimal or excessive. Cf.: an awkward situation – a very awkward situation; a difficult task – too difficult a task; an enthusiastic reception – rather an enthusiastic reception; a hearty welcome – not a very hearty welcome; etc. In this connection, the ability of an adjective to form degrees of comparison is usually taken as a formal sign of its qualitative character, in opposition to a relative adjective which is understood as incapable of forming degrees of comparison by definition. Cf.: a pretty girl – a prettier girl; a quick look – a quicker look; a hearty welcome – the heartiest of welcomes; a bombastic speech – the most bombastic speech. However, in actual speech the described principle of distinction is not at all strictly observed, which is noted in the very grammar treatises putting it forward. Two typical cases of contradiction should be pointed out here. In the first place, substances can possess such qualities as are incompatible with the idea of degrees of comparison. Accordingly, adjectives denoting these qualities, while belonging to the qualitative subclass, are in the ordinary use incapable of forming degrees of comparison. Here refer adjectives like extinct, immobile, deaf, final, fixed, etc. 15

In the second place, many adjectives considered under the heading of relative still can form degrees of comparison, thereby, as it were, transforming the denoted relative property of a substance into such as can be graded quantitatively. Cf.: a mediaeval approach–rather a mediaeval approach – a far more mediaeval approach; of a military design – of a less military design – of a more military design; a grammatical topic ~ a purely grammatical topic – the most grammatical of the suggested topics. In order to overcome the demonstrated lack of rigour in the definitions in question, we may introduce an additional linguistic distinction which is more adaptable to the chances of usage. The suggested distinction is based on the evaluative function of adjectives. According as they actually give some qualitative evaluation to the substance referent or only point out its corresponding native property, all the adjective functions may be grammatically divided into «evaluative» and «specificative». In particular, one and the same adjective, irrespective of its being basically (i.e. in the sense of the fundamental semantic property of its root constituent) «relative» or «qualitative», can be used either in the evaluative function or in the specificative function. For instance, the adjective good is basically qualitative. On the other hand, when employed as a grading term in teaching, i.e. a term forming part of the marking scale together with the grading terms bad, satisfactory, excellent, it acquires the said specificative value; in other words, it becomes a specificative, not an evaluative unit in the grammatical sense (though, dialectically, it does signify in this case a lexical evaluation of the pupil's progress). Conversely, the adjective wooden is basically relative, but when used in the broader meaning «expressionless» or «awkward» it acquires an evaluative force and, consequently, can presuppose a greater or lesser degree («amount») of the denoted properly in the corresponding referent. E.g.: Bundle found herself looking into the expressionless, wooden face of Superintendent Battle (A. Christie). The superintendent was sitting behind a table and looking more wooden than ever. 16

The degrees of comparison are essentially evaluative formulas, therefore any adjective used in a higher comparison degree (comparative, superlative) is thereby made into an evaluative adjective, if only for the nonce (see the examples above). Thus, the introduced distinction between the evaluative and specificative uses of adjectives, in the long run, emphasizes the fact that the morphological category of comparison (comparison degrees) is potentially represented in the whole class of adjectives and is constitutive for it. Among the words signifying properties of a neural referent there is a lexemic set which claims to be recognized as a separate part of speech, i.e. as a class of words different from the adjectives in its class-forming features. These are words built up by the prefix a – and denoting different states, mostly of temporary duration. Here belong lexemes like afraid, agog, adrift, ablaze. In traditional grammar these words were generally considered under the heading of «predicative adjectives» (some of them also under the heading of adverbs), since their most typical position in the sentence is that of a predicative and they are but occasionally used as pre-positional attributes to nouns. The only morphological problem concerning adjectives is, then, that of degrees of comparison. The first question which arises here is, how many degrees of comparison has the English adjective (and, for that matter, the adjective in other languages, such as Russian. Latin, or German)? If we take, for example, the three f о rms of an English adjective: large, larger, (the) largest, shall we say that they are all three of them, degrees of comparison? In that case we ought to term them positive, comparative, and superlative. Or shall we s ау that only the latter two are degrees of comparison (comparative, and superlative), whereas the first (large) does not express any idea of comparison and is therefore not a degree of comparison at all? Both views have found their advocates in grammatical the о ry. Now, if we define a degree о f со mparis о n as а form expressing со mparis о n of one object or objects with another in respect of a certain property, it would seem that 17

the first of the three forms (large) sh о uld not be in с 1uded, as it does n о t express any со mparis о n. 5 We are going to investigate one of the important parts of speech in modern English. We have chosen this theme because we like adjectives from our early school age. It was interesting for us to investigate adjectives and to find something new that we didn’t know before. First of all we found out the basical definitions of adjectives to describe it as part of speech. We used many theoretical books to do our research work, such as: B. Ilyish, The Structure of Modern English, V.N. Zhigadlo, I.P. Ivanova, L.L. Iofik «Modern English language» (Theoretical course grammar), Moscow, 1956 y., Baker, Mark. 2005., Lexical Categories - Verbs, nouns and adjectives. Cambridge University Press, etc. Then we looked through the “Warren, Beatrice. (1984) Classifying adjectives. Gothenburg studies in English” to know their theories and thoughts about adjectives as a part of speech. In grammar, an adjective is a part of speech that modifies a noun or a pronoun, usually by describing it or making its meaning more specific. Adjectives exist in most languages.The most widely recognized adjectives in English are words such as big, old, and tired that actually describe people, places, or things. These words can themselves be modified with adverbs, as in the phrase very big.The articles a, an, and the and possessive nouns, such as Mary's, are classified as adjectives by some grammarians; however, such classification may be specific to one particular language. Other grammarians call such noun modifiers determiners. Similarly, possessive adjectives, such as his or her, are sometimes called determinative possessive pronouns, and demonstrative adjectives, such as this or that, are called determinative demonstratives. In some languages, participles are used as adjectives. Examples of participles used as adjectives are lingering in the phrase lingering headache and broken in the phrase broken toys. Nouns that modify other nouns are sometimes called modifying nouns, nouns used adjectivally, or just part of a compound noun (like the word ice in ice cream) 6 . 5 B. 1.2 How Do Adjectives Make Speech More Expressive? A message void of adjectives is the least expressive one. Therefore adjectives are somehow the backbone of any expression we want to make accurate and clear in encoding the message. Adjectives help us respect real and straight communication rules. So, do you «adjective» your messages so well that people can understand you well? 7 Without the use of adjectives, actually, we lose a lot; and we may be short in expressing our emotions, opinions, and the impressions we have about a given subject. We are going to see to what extent the use of adjectives (esp. adjectives of quality) is helpful in our interactive contact with the others?! See this example: Yesterday, I bought a car. This sentence seems stiff and dull. It may make you respond to it indifferently because the speaker is giving a vague idea about the car he had bought. His sentence doesn't really carry a complete well-spoken idea. What the speaker needs to make his sentence expressive, attractive and provoking, is by relying on adjectives to colour it and present it in a beautiful structure. Now compare the first sentence with the following: Yesterday, I bought a red car. The image is getting a little clearer with the adjective «red». Now we know something new about the car. It is not yellow or black, it is rather red. However, actually, it is not yet fully clear enough for us to form a complete image about the car so as to estimate or underestimate it. Therefore, one sentence can bear as many adjectives as you like, provided that they don't raise misunderstanding or confuse the listener. Yet, the speaker should normally respect the appropriate organization of adjectives in a sentence. Is this order of adjectives in sentence compulsory? Is it based on rules? adjectives on our «stiff» sentence. What is the most appropriate word-order we should respect to reach a complete multi-adjectival statement? Suppose the speaker wants to tell us about the size of the car; and he chooses to depict his car as «small». Where shall he place the new word in the sentence? Before or after the previous adjective, namely: «red»? Look at it this way: Yesterday, I bought a small red car. The sentence in its new structure gives more information about the car. We, lucky as we are, have the opportunity to know that the car in question is not a big one. Thanks to this adjective we become able to make our image of the car a little bit clearer though some more details are still in need. These details cannot be provided, so to speak, unless other adjectives come to complete the image in our minds. The structural issue, on the other hand, is to justify the placement of the adjective «small» before the adjective «red». Why couldn't we say instead: [Yesterday, I bought a red small car]? This form is inaccurate. The word ordering, in a sentence, is not moody at all. The accuracy of the sentence here is controlled by the respect of this order, notably: «shape = small» then «colour = red» but not vice versa. Now suppose the speaker intends to praise his car and decides that the adjective 'beautiful' is the most suitable to give his opinion about it, what shall he do? Where shall he place it among the previously stated adjectives? Look at how the sentence should be structured: Yesterday, I bought a beautiful, small, red car. All these details are boring but unavoidable to make the structure more formal and accurate. The 'beautiful' adjective, on the other hand, is quite interesting in the making of the image. It is not a piece of evidence but it is simply an opinion that could differ from any one else's. The rule says that the opinion is always initial when a range of adjectives are used that's why the speaker places his 'beautiful' opinion adjective first. The adjective describes it as beautiful and this opinion is essentially contributing in depicting an almost complete picture. And that's not all. Our sentence is able to bear as more adjectives as we wish but under the very specific conditions we are trying to clarify here. Now let's go on imagining this 20

famous car as being made in Japan. How can the speaker introduce this new important information? Yesterday, I bought a beautiful, small, red, Japanese car. The beautiful small car is made in Japan, which we didn't know before the use of the adjective «Japanese». It improves the picture of the car in our minds and also in the way we conceive the object. The car hasn't got an American or European origin. It is simply Japanese. The newly introduced adjective has to be placed at the end of the list of adjectives already stated. However, it is not the last in the order. Another adjective, notably the one which gives us information about the material with which the car was constructed, is the last ring of the chain. That's amazing, isn't it? Let's go on with it and see the way we are placing the new adjective, Yesterday, I bought a beautiful, small, red, Japanese, plastic car. We've finally reached a quite complete image of this famous car. In English it is not, normally, allowed to go beyond these five adjectives in a sentence. Their variety is supposed to be enough to make any described object lavishly clear. Therefore, any more adjectives of quality in one single sentence generally lead to ambiguity or distortion of the image. That's greatly enough like this. The construction of a syntactically correct structure of a sentence, in which the adjectives are the basis of transmitting a complete clear message, implies the use of the specific number of adjectives; each of which has to refer you to a piece of information complete in itself but a brick completing the others. It means that no adjectives of the same category should be used more than once. Once these rules are respected, not only will adjectives make your sentences correct and clear, but they also will decorate them and make them look formal and adept. With this order in mind, you can make as many sentences as you wish. You will successfully express yourself formally if you follow the correct order of the adjectives in the sentence. This classification system is not negotiable, however. You cannot break it unless you speak or write to someone who doesn't know exactly what a FORMAL sentence looks like. Examples: 21

As you can see in these sentences, as well as in the former ones, each pair of adjectives is separated by a comma (,). When there are more than one adjective before the noun in a sentence, we usually use commas except for adjectives of colour which we separate by «and» instead. e.g.: A black and white Djellaba A blue, white and red flag. Adjectives are used to carry the specific meaning we intend to convey in many different ways. I mean that the same adjective can have more than one meaning depending on the context. It is not the same in all situations. The adjectives of quality have the ability as to «metamorphose» in their implications once their context has been changed. I mean that they can go from the proper meaning to the figurative one and the same adjective can mean two different things in two different contexts. For example the adjective «pretty» means «attractive» but in another context, it means «fine or good». The adjective «rich», also, has got this quality. It can be used for more than one meaning. Here is a usual example: 1. That's a rich man. (He is wealthy; he's got a lot of money). 2. That's a rich book. (There are a lot of interesting ideas and insights in it). Sometimes the adjectives turn to be rigid and one adjective is used only for specific purpose and cannot be used for others though they share the same quality. Look at this example: -/ My uncle is the tall man in the middle. A man is «tall»; but what about a building or a mountain? Can we attribute the adjective «tall» to them, too? No, another adjective is quite more suitable because it is more expressive and accurate in this situation, it is «high»: -/ A high building / mountain. 22

1.3 Forming degrees of Adjectives The only morphological problem concerning adjectives is, then, that of degrees of comparison. The first question which arises here is, how many degrees of comparison has the English adjective (and, for that matter, the adjective in other languages, such as Russian, Latin, or German)? If we take, for example, the three forms of an English adjective: large, larger, (the) largest, shall we say that they are, all three of them, degrees of comparison? In that case we ought to term them pos itive, comparative, and superlative. Or shall we say that only the latter two are degrees of comparison (comparative and superlative), whereas the first (large), does not express any idea of comparison and is therefore not a degree of comparison at all? Both views have found their advocates in grammatical theory. Now, if we define a degree comparison as a form of expressing comparisonor of one object or objects with another in respect of a certain property, it would seem that the first of the three forms (large) should not be in cluded, as it does not express any comparison. Then we should have only two degrees of comparison larger, (the) largest, and a form standing apart, coinciding with the stem from which the degrees of comparison are formed, and which may be described as the basic form. Now it is well known that not every adjective has degrees of comparison. This may depend on two factors. One of these is not grammatical, but semantic. Since degrees of comparison express a difference of degree in the same property, only those adjectives admit of degrees of comparison which denote properties capable of appearing in different degrees. Thus, it is obvious that, for example, the adjective middle has no degrees of comparison. The same might be said about many other adjectives, such as blind, deaf, dead, etc. However, this should not be taken too absolutely. Occasionally we may meet with such a sentence as this: You cannot be deader than dead. In a novel by E. 23

Hemingway the hero compares the ways one and the same word sounds in different languages: Take dead, mort, muerto, and todt. Todt was the deadest of them all. But as a rule adjectives having such meanings do not appear in forms of comparison. A more complex problem in the sphere of degrees of comparison i s t h at of t h e f o r m a t i on s m or e di f f i c ul t , ( t h e) m os t di f f i c ul t , or more beautiful, (the) most beautiful. The question is this: is more difficult an analytical comparative degree of the adjective difficult? In that case the word more would be an auxiliary word serving to make up that analytical form, and the phrase would belong to the sphere of morphology. Or is more difficult a free phrase, not dif ferent in its essential character from the phrase very difficult or somewhat difficult"? In that case the adjective difficult would have no degrees of comparison at all (forming degrees of comparison of this adjective by means of the inflections -er, -est is impossible), and the whole phrase would be a syntactical formation. The traditional view held both by practical and theoretical grammars until recently was that phrases of this type were analytical degrees of comparison. Recently, however, the view has been put forward that they do not es sentially differ from phrases of the type very difficult, which, of course, nobody would think of treating as analytical forms. Let us examine the arguments that have been or may be put forward in favour of one and the other view. The view t hat form at ions of the type more di ff icul t are ana lytical degrees of comparison may be supported by the following considerations: (1) The actual meaning of formations like more dif ficult, (the) most difficult does not differ from that of the degrees of comparison larger, (the) largest. (2) Qualitative adjectives, like di ffi cult , express properti es which m ay be present in diff erent degr ees, and t her ef ore they ar e bound to have degr ees of com parison. The argument against such formations being analytical degrees of 24

No f or m at i on shoul d be interpreted as an analytical form unless there are compelling r e as on s f or i t , an d i f t h er e a r e co ns i d er at i o ns co nt r ad i c t i ng su ch a view. Now, in this particular case there are such considerations: ( 1 ) The wor ds more and most have t he same m eani ng i n these phrases as in other phrases in which they may appear, e. g. more time, most people, etc. (2) Alongside of the phrases more difficult, (the) most difficult there are also the phrases less difficult, (the) least difficult, and there seems to be no sufficient reason for treat ing the two sets of phr ases i n diff er ent ways, sayi ng that more difficult is an analytical form, while less difficult is not. Besides, the ver y fact that more and less, (the) most and (t he) least can equally well combine with difficult, would seem to show that they are free phrases and none of them is an analytical form. The fact that more difficult stands in the same sense relation to difficult as larger t o large i s of course cer tain, but it should have no im pact on the interpretation of the phrases more difficult, (the) most dif ficult from a grammatical viewpoint. Taking now a general view of both lines of argument. We can say that roughly speaking, consideration of meaning tend towards recognising such formations as analytical forms, whereas strictly grammatical considerations lead to the contrary view. It must be left to every student to decide what the way out of this dilemma should be. It seems, on the whole, that the tendency towards making linguistics something like an exact science which we are witnessing to-day should make us prefer the second view, based on strictly grammatical criteria. If that view is adopted the sphere of adjectives having degrees of comparison in Modern English will be very limited: besides the limitations imposed by the meaning of the adjectives (as shown above), there will be the limitation depending on the ability of an adjective to take suffixes -er and -est. A few adjectives do not, as is well known, form any degrees of comparison by means of inflections. Their degrees of comparison are derived from a different root. These are good, better, best; bad, worse, worst, and a few 25

more. Should these formations be acknow ledged as suppletive forms of the adjectives good, bad, etc., or should they not? There seems no valid reason for denying them that status. The relation good: better = large: larger is indeed of the same kind as the relation go: went = live: lived, where nobody has expressed any doubt about went being a suppletive past tense form of the verb go. Thus, it is clear enough that there is every reason to take better, worse, etc., as suppletive degrees of com parison to the corresponding adjectives. The category is constituted by the opposition of the three forms known under the heading of degrees of comparison: the basic form ( positive degree ), having no features of corn" parison; the comparative degree form, having the feature of restricted superiority (which limits the comparison to two elements only); the superlative degree form, having the fea ture of unrestricted superiority. It should be noted that the meaning of unrestricted su periority is in-built in the superlative degree as such, though in practice this form is used in collocations imposing certain restrictions on the effected comparison; thus, the form in question may be used to signify restricted superiority, name ly, in cases where a limited number of referents are com pared. Cf .: Johnny was the strongest boy in the com - pany. As is evident from the example, superiority restriction is shown here not by the native meaning of the superlative, but by the particular contextual construction of comparison where the physical strength of one boy is estimated in rela tion to that of his companions. Some linguists approach the number of the degrees of comparison as problematic on the grounds that the basic form of the adjective does not express any comparison by itself and therefore should be excluded from the category. This exclusion would reduce the category to two members only, i.e. the comparative and superlative degrees. The synthetical forms of comparison in -er and -(e)st coexist with the analytical forms of comparison effected by the auxiliaries more and most . The 26

analytical forms of comparison perform a double function. On the one hand, they are used with the evaluative adjectives that, due to their phonemic structure (two- syllable words with the stress on the first syllable ending in other grapho-phonemic complexes than -er, -y, -le, -ow or words of more than two-syllable composition) cannot normally take the synthetical forms of comparison. In this respect, the analytical com parison forms are in categorial complementary distribution with the synthetical comparison forms. On the other hand, the analytical forms of comparison, as different from the synthetical forms, are used to express emphasis, thus com plementing the synthetical forms in the sphere of this im portant stylistic connotation. Cf .: The audience became more and more noisy , and soon the speaker's words were drowned in the general hum of voices. As we have mentioned above, t here are three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative and superlative. The positive form is the plain stem of an adjective (e.g.heavy, slow, straight, etc) . The comparative states that one thing has more of the quality named by the adjective than some other thing (e.g.Henry is taller than John). The superlative states that the thing has the greatest degree of the quality among the things being considered (e.g. Henry is the tallest boy in the class) Most one-syllable adjectives, and most two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, -ow, -er, or consonant +-le , with loud stress on the first syllable and weak stress on the second, form their comparative and superlative by the addition of the suffixes -er and -est. All adjectives other than those enumerated above form their comparative by using the intensifier more and their superlative by using the intensifier the most. Positive Comparative Superlative Interesting more interesting the most interesting Generous more generous the most generous Personal more personal the most personal In a very few cases, English permits a choice between the two devices: commoner / more common, commonest / the most common. Ordinary, when one form is prescribed by the rules, the other is forbidden. A few adjectives have irregular forms for the degrees of comparison. They are: good - better - the best bad - worse - the worst far - farther - the farthest (for distance) - further - the furthest (for time and distance) late - later - the latest (for time) - last (for order) old - older - the oldest (for age) - elder - the eldest (for seniority rather the age; used only attributively) There are some adjectives that, on account of their meaning, do not admit of comparison at all, e.g. perfect, unique, full, empty, square, round, wooden, daily, upper, major, outer, whole, only and some others. There are sentence patterns in which comparison is expressed: a) comparison of equality (as … as) e.g. The boy was as shy as a monkey. After his bathe, the inspector was as fresh as a fish. When he had left Paris, it was as cold as in winter there. b) comparison of inequality (not so ... as, not as ... as) 28

e.g. His skin was not so bronzed as a Tahiti native’s. The sun is not so hot today as I thought it would be. You are not as nice as people think. c) comparison of superiority (... –er than, ... –est of (in, ever) e.g. He looked younger than his years, much younger than Sheila or me. To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist. My mother was the proudest of women, and she was vain, but in the end she had an eye for truth. It’s the biggest risk I’ve ever had to take. d) comparison of inferiority ( less ... than) e.g. John is less musical than his sister. He had the consolation of noting that his friend was less sluggish than before. e) comparison of parallel increase or decrease (the ... the, ...-er as) e.g. The longer I think of his proposal the less I like it. The sooner this is done, the better. He became more cautious as he grew older. There are set phrases which contain the comparative or the superlative degree of an adjective: a) a change for the better (for the worst) – yaxshi tomonga o’zgarmoq (yomon tomondan) e.g. There seem to be a change for the better in your uncle. He had a very hearty dinner yesterday. b) none the less – тем не менее e.g. It did not take him long to make up his mind. None the less she showed her scorn for his hesitation. c) so much the better ( the worst) – тем лучше (хуже) e.g. If he will help us, so much the better. At (the) best she can stay with us for two days. The structure of the analytical degrees of comparison. The structure of the analytical degrees of comparison is meaningfully overt; these forms are devoid of the feature of "semantic idiomatism" characteristic of some other categor ial analytical forms, such as, for instance, the forms of the verbal perfect. For this reason the analytical degrees of com parison invite some linguists to call in question their claim to a categorial status in English grammar. In particular, scholars point out the following two fac tors in support of the view that the combinations of more/most with the basic form of the adjective are not the analytical expressions of the morphological category of comparison, but free syntactic constructions: first, the more/most -com binations are semantically analogous to combinations of less/least with the adjective which, in the general opinion, are syntactic combinations of notional words; second, the most - combination, unlike the synthetic superlative, can take the indefinite article, expressing not the superlative, but the elative meaning (i.e. a high, not the highest degree of the respective quality). 30

The reasons advanced, though claiming to be based on an analysis of actual lingual data, can hardly be called con vincing as regards their immediate negative purpose. Let us first consider the use of the most -combillation with the indefinite article. This combination is a common means of expressing elative evaluations of substance properties. The function of the elative most -construction in distinction to the function of the superlative most -'construction will be seen from the fol lowing examples: The speaker launched a most significant personal attack on the Prime Minister . The most significant of the arguments in a dispute is not necessarily the most spectacular one. While the phrase "a most significant (personal) attack" in the first of the two examples gives the idea of rather a high degree of the quality expressed irrespective of any directly introduced or implied comparison with other attacks on the Prime Minister, the phrase "the most significant of the ar guments" expresses exactly the superlative degree of the quality in relation to the immediately introduced com parison with all the rest of the arguments in a dispute; the same holds true of the phrase "the most spectacular one". It is this exclusion of the outwardly superlative ad jective from a comparison that makes it into a simple elative, with its most -constituent turned from the superlative aux iliary into a kind of a lexical intensifier. The definite article with the elative most -construction is also possible, if leaving the elative function less distinctly recognizable (in oral speech the elative most is commonly left unstressed, the absence of stress serving as a negative mark of the elative). Cf .: I found myself in the most awkward situation, for I couldn't give a satisfactory answer to any question asked by the visitors. Now, the synthetical superlative degree, as is known, can be used in the elative function as well, the distinguishing feature of the latter being its exclusion from a comparison. Cf.:Unfortunately, our cooperation with Danny proved the 31

worst experience for both of us. No doubt Mr. Snider will show you his collection of minerals with the greatest pleas ure. And this fact gives us a clue for understanding the ex pressive nature of the elative superlative as such — the na ture that provides it with a permanent grammatico-stylistic status in the language. Indeed, the expressive peculiarity of the form consists exactly in the immediate combination of the two features which outwardly contradict each other: the categorial form of the superlative on the one hand, and the absence of a comparison on the other. That the categorical form of the superlative (i.e. the su perlative with its general functional specification) is essen tial also for the expression of the elative semantics can, how ever paradoxical it might appear, be very well illustrated by the elative use of the comparative degree. Indeed, the com parative combination featuring the dative comparative de gree is constructed in such a way as to place it in the func tional position of unrestricted superiority, i.e. in the po sition specifically characteristic of the superlative. E.g .: Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to greet you as our guest of honour. There is nothing more refreshing than a good swim. The parallelism of functions between the two forms of comparison (the comparative degree and the superlative de gree) in such and like examples is unquestionable. As we see, the elative superlative, though it is not the regular superlative in the grammatical sense, is still a kind of a specific, grammatically featured construction. This grammatical specification distinguishes it from common elative constructions which may be generally defined as syn tactic combinations of an intensely high estimation. E.g .: an extremely important amendment; a matter of exceeding urgency; quite an unparalleled beauty; etc. Thus, from a grammatical point of view, the elative su perlative, though semantically it is "elevated", is nothing else but a degraded superlative, and its distinct featuring mark with the analytical superlative degree is the indefinite article: the two forms of the superlative of different function al purposes receive the 32

two different marks (if not quite rig orously separated in actual uses) by the article determina tion treatment. Chapter II The Syntactic Function of Adjectives. 2.1 Position and Order of Adjectives. 1. Most adjectives can be used in a noun group, after determiners and numbers if there are any, in front of the noun. e.g. He had a beautiful smile. She bought a loaf of white bread. There was no clear evidence. His choice had been to stay in the deep dark water. That was the saddest thing. 2. Most adjectives can also be used after a link verb such as ‘be’, ‘become’, or ‘feel’. e.g. He was pleased. I'm cold. He felt angry. Nobody seemed amused. 3. Some adjectives are normally used only after a link verb. afraid asleep due ready unable alive aware glad sorry well alone content ill sure For example, we can say ‘She was glad’, but you do not talk about ‘a glad woman’. I wanted to be alone. We were getting ready for bed. I'm not quite sure. He didn't know whether to feel glad or sorry. 4. For example, we talk about ‘an atomic bomb’, but we do not say ‘The bomb was atomic’. He sent countless letters to the newspapers. This book includes a good introductory chapter on forests. 5. When we use an adjective to emphasize a strong feeling or opinion, it always comes in front of a noun. absolute outright pure true complete perfect real utter entire positive total Some of it was absolute rubbish. Some adjectives that describe size or age can come after a noun group consisting of a number or determiner and a noun that indicates the unit of measurement. Note that you do not say ‘two pounds heavy’, you say ‘two pounds in weight’. 7. A few adjectives are used alone after a noun. |designate |elect |galore |incarnate | She was now the president elect. For example, ‘the concerned mother’ means a mother who is worried, but ‘the mother concerned’ means the mother who has been mentioned. It's one of those incredibly involved stories. The people involved are all doctors. I'm worried about the present situation. Of the 18 people present, I knew only one. Her parents were trying to act in a responsible manner. We do not know the person responsible for his death. Order of Adjectives. 1. We often want to add more information to a noun than you can with one adjective, so we need to use two or more adjectives. In theory, we can use the adjectives in any order, depending on the quality you want to emphasize. In practice, however, there is a normal order. When we use two or more adjectives in front of a noun, we usually put an adjective that expresses our opinion in front of an adjective that just describes something. e.g. You live in a nice big house. He is a naughty little boy. She was wearing a beautiful pink suit. 2. When we use more than one adjective to express our opinion, an adjective with a more general meaning such as ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘nice’, or ‘lovely’ usually comes before an adjective with a more specific meaning such as ‘comfortable’, ‘clean’, or ‘dirty’. e.g. I sat in a lovely comfortable armchair in the corner. He put on a nice clean shirt. It was a horrible dirty room. 3. We can use adjectives to describe various qualities of people or things. For example, we might want to indicate their size, their shape, or the country they come from. Descriptive adjectives belong to six main types, but we are unlikely ever to use all six types in the same noun group. If we did, we would normally put them in the following order: Size shape age colour nationality material 35

This means that if we want to use an ‘age’ adjective and a ‘nationality’ adjective, we put the ‘age’ adjective first. We met some young Chinese girls. Similarly, a ‘shape’ adjective normally comes before a ‘colour’ adjective. e.g. He had round black eyes. There was only the heavy sharp blue head and the big eyes and the clicking, thrusting all-swallowing jaws. Other combinations of adjectives follow the same order. Note that ‘material’ means any substance, not only cloth. e.g. There was a large round wooden table in the room. The man was carrying a small black plastic bag. He could see their wide, flattened, shovel-pointed heads now and their white tipped wide pectoral fins. 4. We usually put comparative and superlative adjectives in front of other adjectives. e.g. Some of the better English actors have gone to live in Hollywood. These are the highest monthly figures on record. Better weather for me than for you, fish. But she is much lighter now. 5. When we use a noun in front of another noun, we never put adjectives between them. We put any adjectives in front of the first noun. e.g. He works in the French film industry. He receives a large weekly cash payment. 6. When we use two adjectives as the complement of a link verb, we use a conjunction such as ‘and’ to link them. With three or more adjectives, we link the last two with a conjunction, and put commas after the others. e.g. The day was hot and dusty. The room was large but square. The house was old, damp and smelly. We felt hot, tired and thirsty. 36

2.2 Adjectives with prepositions, with ‘to’-infinitive or ‘that’-clauses 1. When we use an adjective after a link verb, we can often use the adjective on its own or followed by a prepositional phrase. e.g. He was afraid. He was afraid of his enemies. 2. Some adjectives cannot be used alone after a link verb. If they are followed by a prepositional phrase, it must have a particular preposition: aware of unaware of fond of accustomed to unaccustomed to used to e.g. I've always been terribly fond of you. He is unaccustomed to the heat. 3. Some adjectives can be used alone, or followed by a particular preposition. used alone, or with ‘of ’ to specify the cause of a feeling afraid critical jealous suspicious ashamed envious proud terrified convinced frightened scared tired They may feel jealous of your success. With some adjectives, we can add a ‘to’-infinitive clause or a ‘that’-clause to say what the action or situation is. afraid disappointed happy sad anxious frightened pleased surprised ashamed glad proud unhappy If the subject is the same in both clauses, we usually use a ‘to’- infinitive clause. If the subject is different, we must use a ‘that’- clause. e.g. I was happy to see them again. He was happy that they were coming to the party. We often use a ‘to’-infinitive clause when talking about future time in relation to the main clause. e.g. I am afraid to go home. He was anxious to leave before it got dark. We often use a ‘that’-clause when talking about present or past time in relation to the main clause. e.g. He was anxious that the passport was missing. They were afraid that I might have talked to the police. 2. We often use ‘sorry’ with a ‘that’-clause. Note that ‘that’ is often omitted. e.g. I'm very sorry that I can't join you. I'm sorry I'm so late. 39

3. Some adjectives are not usually used alone, but have a ‘to’-infinitive clause after them to say what action or situation the adjective relates to. able due likely unlikely apt inclined prepared unwilling bound liable ready willing e.g. They were unable to help her. When we want to express an opinion about someone or something, we often use an adjective followed by a ‘to’-infinitive clause. difficult easy impossible possible right wrong e.g. She had been easy to deceive. The windows will be almost impossible to open. Am I wrong to stay here? 5. With some adjectives, we use a ‘that’-clause to express an opinion about someone or something. awful extraordinary important sad bad funny interesting true essential good obvious e.g. I was sad that people had reacted in this way. . It is extraordinary that we should ever have met! 6. We can also use adjectives with ‘to’-infinitive clauses after ‘it’ as the impersonal subject. We use the preposition ‘of ’ or ‘for’ to indicate the person or thing that the adjective relates to. e.g. It was easy to find the path. It was good of John to help me. It was difficult for her to find a job. 40

Adjectives ending in ‘-ing’ or ‘-ed’. We use many ‘-ing’ adjectives to describe the effect that something has on our feelings, or on the feelings of people in general. For example, if we talk about 'a surprising number', we mean that the number surprises us. alarming charming embarrassing surprising amazing confusing exciting terrifying annoying convincing frightening tiring astonishing depressing interesting welcoming boring disappointing shocking worrying e.g. He lives in a charming house just outside the town. She always has a warm welcoming smile. Then came the same delicate pullinig touch again. We use some ‘-ing’ adjectives to describe something that continues over a period of time. ageing decreasing existing living booming dying increasing remaining e.g. Britain is an ageing society. Increasing prices are making food very expensive. “They are good”, he said. “They are our brothers like the flying fish”. Then it began to make a slow hissing sound in the water. Many ‘-ed’ adjectives describe people's feelings. They have the same form as the past participle of a transitive verb and have a passive meaning. For example, ‘a frightened person’ is a person who has been frightened by something. alarmed delighted frightened surprised amused depressed interested tired astonished disappointed satisfied troubled bored excited shocked worried e.g. She looks alarmed about something. A bored student complained to his teacher. She had big blue frightened eyes. 41

It had a wire leader and a medium-sized hook. Once there had been a tinted photograph of his wife on the wall. It was cold after the sun went down ans the old man’s sweat dried cold on his back He rested sitting on the unstepped mast. His hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. Note that the past participles of irregular verbs do not end in ‘-ed’, but can be used as adjectives. e.g. The bird had a broken wing. His coat was dirty and torn. They were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. He ate all of the wedge-shaped stripes of fish. 4. Like other adjectives, ‘-ing’ and ‘-ed’ adjectives can be: a) used in front of a noun: They still show amazing loyalty to their parents. The old man could see the slight bulge in the water that the big dolphin raised as they followed the escaping fish. This is the most terrifying tale ever written. I was thanked by the satisfied customer. The worried authorities cancelled the match. b) used after link verbs: It's amazing what they can do. The present situation is terrifying. He felt satisfied with all the work he had done. My husband was worried. At noon the old man’s left hand was uncramped. The old man looked at him with his sun-burned, confident loving eyes. c) modified by adverbials such as ‘quite‘, ‘really‘, and ‘very’, ”such”, too” interjection What a …. The film was quite boring. 42

There is nothing very surprising in this. She was quite astonished at his behaviour. He was a very disappointed young man. He is very thoughtful. Never have I had such a strong fish. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. What a great fish he is. d) used in the comparative and superlative His argument was more convincing than mine. He became even more depressed after she died. This is one of the most boring books I've ever read. She was the most interested in going to the cinema. That was the saddest thing I ever saw ith them, the old man thought. 5. A small number of ‘-ed‘ adjectives are normally only used after link verbs such as ‘be‘, ‘become‘, or ‘feel‘. They are related to transitive verbs, and are often followed by a prepositional phrase, a ‘to‘-infinitive clause, or a ‘that‘-clause. convinced interested prepared tired delighted involved scared touched finished pleased thrilled worried e.g. The Brazilians are pleased with the results. He was always prepared to account for his actions. She was scared that they would find her. 2.3 Syntactic Functions of Adjectives. 43

In the sentence the adjective performs the functions of an attribute and a predicative . Of the two, the more specific function of the adjective is that of an attribute, since the function of a predicative can be performed by the noun as well. There is, though, a profound difference between the predicative uses of the adjective and the noun which is de termined by their native categorial features. Namely, the predicative adjective expresses some attributive property of its noun- referent, whereas the predicative noun expresses various substantival characteristics of its referent, such as its identification or classification of different types. This can be shown on examples analysed by definitional and transfor - mational procedures. Cf.: You talk to people as if they were a group . —> You talk to people as if they formed a group . Quite obviously, he was a friend . —> His behaviour was like that of a friend . Cf., as against the above: I will be silent as a grave . —> I will be like a silent grave . Walker felt healthy . —> Walker felt a healthy man . It was sensational . —> That fact was a sensational fact . When used as predicatives or post-positional attributes, a considerable number of adjectives, in addition to the gen eral combinability characteristics of the whole class, are distinguished by a complementive combinability with nouns. The complement-expansions of adjectives are effected by means of prepositions. E.g. fond of, jealous of, curious of, suspicious of; angry with, sick with, serious about, certain about, happy about; grateful to, thankful to, etc. Many such adjectival collocations render essentially verbal meanings and some of them have direct or indirect parallels among verbs. Cf.: be fond of —love, like; be envious of — envy; be angry with — resent; be mad for , about - covet; be thank ful to — thank. Alongside of other complementive relations expressed with the help of prepositions and corresponding to direct and prep ositional object-relations of verbs, some of these adjectives may render relations of addressee. Cf .: grateful to, indebted to, partial to, useful for . 44

To the derivational features of adjectives belong a number of suffixes and prefixes of which the most important are: - ful (hopeful), - less (flawless),- ish (bluish, - ous (famous), - ive (decorative), - ic (basic); un - (unprecedented), in - (inac curate), pre - (premature). Among the adjectival affixes should also be named the prefix a -, constitutive for the stative sub- class which is to be discussed below. As for the variable (demutative) morphological features, the English adjective, having lost in the course of the history of English all its forms of grammatical agreement with the noun, is distinguished only by the hybrid category of com parison. Adjectives may serve in the sentence as: 1) an attribute e.g. Do you see the small green boat, which has such an odd shape? The lights of the farm blazed out in the windy darkness. “It is a strong full-blooded fish, he thought. He saw the reflected glare of the lights. There was only the heavy sharp blue haed and the big eyes and the clicking, thrusting all-swallowing jaws. Adjectives used as attributes usually immediately precede the noun. Normally there is no pause between the adjective and the noun. Such attributes are called close attributes. However, an adjective placed in pre- position to the noun may be separated from it by a pause. Then it becomes a loose attribute. e.g. Clever and tactful, George listened to my story with deep concern. Yet loose attributes are more often found in post-position to the noun. e.g. My father, happy and tired, kissed me good-night. 2) a predicative e.g. Her smile was almost professional. He looked mature, sober and calm. I was lucky. The breeze was steady. 3) part of a compound verbal predicate 45

e.g. He stood silent, with his back turned to the window. She lay motionless, as if she were asleep. 4) an objective predicative e.g. I thought him very intelligent. She wore her hair short. You give me much good counsel. 5) a subjective predicative e.g. The door was closed tight. Her hair was dyed blonde. It should be noted that most adjectives can be used both attributively and predicatively, but some, among them those beginning with a-, can be used only as predicatives (e.g. afraid, asleep, along, alive, awake, ashamed and also content, sorry, well, ill, due, etc.) A few adjectives can be used only as attributes (e.g. outer, major, minor, only, whole, former, latter and some others). We investigated the substantivization of Adjectives. Sometimes adjectives become substantivized. In this case they have the functions of nouns in the sentence and are always preceded by the definite article. Substantivized adjectives may have two meanings: 1) They may indicate a class of persons in a general sense (e.g. the poor = poor people, the dead = dead people, etc.) Such adjectives are plural in meaning and take a plural verb. e.g. The old receive pensions. The young are always romantic, aren’t they? The blind are taught trades in special schools. If we wish to denote a single person we must add a noun. e.g. The old man receives a pension. If we wish to refer to a particular group of persons (not the whole class), it is aslo necessary to add a noun. e.g. The young are usually intolerant. The young men are fishing. 46

Some adjectives denoting nationalities (e.g. English, French, Dutch) are used in the same way. e.g. The English are great lovers of tea. There were a few English people among the tourists. 2) Substantivized adjectives may also indicate an abstract notion. Then they are singular in meaning and take a singular verb.e.g. The good in him overweighs the bad. My mother never lost her taste for extravagant. CONCLUSION The subject of our qualification paper was adjectives. The only 47

morphological problem concerning adjectives is, then, that of degrees of comparison. The first question which arises here is, how many degrees of comparison has the English adjective (and, for that matter, the adjective in other languages, such as Russian, Latin, or German)? If we take, for example, the three forms of an English adjective: large, larger, (the) largest, shall we say that they are, all three of them, degrees of comparison? In that case we ought to term them pos itive, comparative, and superlative. Or shall we say that only the latter two are degrees of comparison (comparative and superlative), whereas the first (large), does not express any idea of comparison and is therefore not a degree of comparison at all? Both views have found their advocates in grammatical theory. Now, if we define a degree comparison as a form of expressing comparisonor of one object or objects with another in respect of a certain property, it would seem that the first of the three forms (large) should not be in cluded, as it does not express any comparison. Then we should have only two degrees of comparison larger, (the) largest, and a form standing apart, coinciding with the stem from which the degrees of comparison are formed, and which may be described as the basic form. Comparative and superlative forms apply only to the base form of the adjective, so that duplicate forms like most biggest or worser are nonstandard. A few adjectives have no comparative but a superlative with -most : uppermost , westernmost , etc. Also it has its own degrees, such as comparison, etc. Those such as male , female , extant and extinct which express "absolute" qualities do not admit comparisons: one animal cannot be more extinct than another. Adjectives with two syllables vary. Some take either form, and the situation determines the usage. For example, one will see commoner and more common , depending on which sounds better in the context. It was pleasant to investigate adjectives and we think that it is not the end of its investigation. Sometimes adjectives become substantivized.
