I am a citizen of my beloved country – Independent Uzbekistan, which is a real paradise for a human being just to be born in and enjoy living, studying and working for the further prosperity of the gifted, friendly and laborious multinational Uzbek people who are today equal among equals and continuing to make their worthy contribution to the development of the world civilization. Our country is only 2 3 years old, but each year of this period, I think, may be compared to decades just to deeply estimate the ever high growth of my country in every walk of life: spirituality, economy, science, technique and culture, etc. The forthcoming generation is support of any society and people. The flourishing of the country mostly depends on the intellect, knowledge, aspiration and enthusiasm of its young men and women. Since the early days of Uzbekistan’s independence, care about the harmonic development of the younger generation, its physical moral and spiritual upbringing has become one of the most important priorities of state policy. In 1997, upon the immediate leadership of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, IslomKarimov, The national program for Cadre Training was developed. Thanks to its implementation, the country has been maintain the permanent deepening and renewal of the general educational and professional training through the organic unity combined with historical and spiritual heritage of the people Reforms in the systems of education in Uzbekistan and the large- scale programs which are aimed at the happy future of our children, are now rendering their true results. On December 10, 2012 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a degree “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”. 1 It is noted that in the framework of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Programme for Training 1 “Chet tili o’qitish tizimining yanada takomillashtirish chora - tadbirlari” Xalq so’zi December 10, 2012. 3

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan in the country, a comprehensive foreign languages’ teaching system, aimed at creating harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern-thinking young generation, further integration of the country to the world community, has been created. During the years of independence, over 51.7 thousand teachers of foreign languages graduated from universities, English, German and French multimedia tutorials and textbooks for 5-9 grades of secondary schools, electronic resources for learning English in primary schools were created, more than 5000 secondary schools, professional colleges and academic lyceums were equipped with language laboratories. However, analysis of the current system of organizing language learning shows that learning standards, curricula and textbooks do not fully meet the current requirements, particularly in the use of advanced in formation and media technologies. Education in mainly conducted in traditional methods. Further development of a continuum of foreign languages learning at all levels of education; improving skills of teachers and provision of modern teaching materials are required. According to the decree, starting from 2013/2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country will be taught from the first of schooling in the form of lesson-games and speaking games, continuing to learning the alphabet, reading and spelling in the second year (grade). “We should remember that only that country, that nation can advise great future, prosperity and well-being which would be able to train knowledgeable, professional and energetic persons, true patriots of their country, the country which would provide them with huge spiritual legacy of the great national culture and give them access to the world treasure of science and culture” 2 . There is possibility to radically reform the education system, to bring its contents, forms and methods close to the real need of the society. Educational establishment of a new type, such as professional colleges, academic lyceums, gymnasiums and business schools are intensively being created. The structural cohesion and integrity of a compound may depend upon unity of stress, solid or hyphenated spelling, semantic unity, unity of morphological and syntactic functioning or more often, upon the combined effect of several of these or similar phonetic, graphic, semantic, morphological or syntactic factors. The integrity of a compound is manifested in its indivisibility that is impossibility of inserting another word or word-group between its elements. Translation Studies is nowadays overwhelmed by a number of attempts to discard prescriptive standpoints and adopt new, descriptive directions. As a consequence, the research effort has been shifted from an investigation of things that should be done to an investigation of things that are considered in this paper. Actualityof the present qualification paper . The present work under the discussion attempts to study and work out necessary points on the translation of compounds. We decided to carry out such a task and the actuality is that this work covers every possible ways of translation of compound words and how they can be “carried” into TL. The procedure itself is not easy, that’s why taking into consideration its difficultness and complexity the paper lays out source-language and target-language-oriented translation. Investigation of the problem. This problem was investigated by many scientists Thomas Hobbes, I. P. Pavlov, L. Bloomfield, H. Sweet, E. Sapir, John Lyons, Stephen Ullman, Gardener, A. Meillet, V.V. Vinagradov, A.I. Smirinitsky, O.S. Ahmanova, M.D. Stepanova and other scholars. The aim of the qualification paper is to study thoroughly compound nouns with component “Man” in English and their comparison with Uzbek ones. The investigation is very significant by the view of translation point because the translation of compound nouns may cause some difficulty and to show some ways of solving the problems lies upon our shoulder. 5

The novelty of the qualification paper is that we have the problems of compound nouns, non-idiomatic and idiomatic compounds. The theoretical significanceof the present qualification paper . By learning translation problems of compound words, we think, the results of the present work will enrich new attempts in this field. Detailed analysis and different reader-oriented results of this paper will give an opportunity for a translator/interpreter to gain much knowledge on how to deal with the compound words. The practical value of the paper is that it is of great importance by either lexical or theoretical point. It may be useful for students investigating compounds in general. Due to its connection to translation this very work can also be useful in the seminars of translation theory and be helpful in writing text-books, manuals, scientific researches, etc. on translation. The structure of the qualification paper. The qualification paper consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and bibliography. Introduction covers the actuality, aim, tasks, theoretical and practical importance and the structure. The first chapter deals with compound words, classification of compounds and their semantic structure. The second chapter deals with the translation theory, equivalence problems, adequacy and translation analysis of compound nouns. CHAPTER I Theoretical study of compounds 7

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan 1.1 Review of the linguistic literature on compound words Compound words are words consisting of at least two stems that occur in the language as free forms. A compound is a word composed of more than one free morpheme . In a compound word the immediate constituents obtain integrity and structural cohesion that make them function in a sentence as a separate lexical unit. The structural cohesion and integrity of a compound may depend upon unity of stress, solid or hyphenated spelling, semantic unity, unity of morphological and syntactic functioning or more often, upon the combined effect of several of these or similar phonetic, graphic, semantic, morphological or syntactic factors.The integrity of a compound is manifested in its indivisibility that is impossibility of inserting another word or word-group between its elements. For example, speaking about a fisherman we can insert some other word between the article and the noun, e.g. a good fisherman , a good and industrious fisherman , because the article a is a separate word, no such insertion is possible between the stems fisher and man , for they are not words but morphemes.In describing the structure of a compound one should examine three types of relation of the whole to its members and correlation with equivalent free phrases.There are non-idiomatic compounds with a perfectly clear motivation. Here the meaning of the constituents adds up in creating the meaning of the whole and name the referent either directly or figuratively. Thus, when the combination seaman was first used it was not difficult to understand that it meant, «a man professionally connected with the sea». The word differentiated in this way a sailor from the rest of mankind. When aviation came into being the same formula with the same kind of motivation was used to coin the compound airman and also aircraft and airship to name the machines designed for air-travel, differentiating them from sea-going craft. Spaceman , spacecraft and spaceship built on the model of airman , aircraft and airship are readily understood evenwhen heard for the first time. The semantic integrity of a compound is on the other hand very often idiomatic in its character, so that the meaning of the whole is not a mere sum of its elements. A compound is often very different in meaning from a 8

Its essential feature is being a calling man: not every man with bell is a bellman. A bellman may be not a bell at all but a man who calls or summons other people. His bell is not necessarily be carried: it may be used as a symbol. Thus bellman - a man who calls for something . A beadsman is not a simple man; he is a person who preys a great deal without saying anything important. The same denotational character is observed in the compound assemblyman . It is also idiomatic, as it does not name an assemble but a person who speaks and acts in assembly. A fuss-pot is a person easily excited and nervous about trifles. Thus far the original motivation of the idiomatic compound be easily re-created. The following examples illustrate idiomatic compounds where it is not so obvious: gas-man «a man who checks gas assumption», bondsman «giving money or some other credit for a person in debt», groomsman «a man accompanying a groom».The term word denotes the basic unit of given language resulting from the association of a particular meaning with a particular group of sounds capable of a particular grammatical employment. A word therefore is simultaneously a semantic, grammatical and phonological unit. Although the borderline between various linguistic units is not always sharp and clear, we have tried to define every new term on its first appearance at once simply and unambiguously, if not always very rigorously. The approximate definition of the term word has therefore already been given in the opening page of the book. The important point to remember about definitions is that they should indicate the most essential characteristic features of the notion expressed by the term under discussion, the features by which this notion is distinguished from other similar notions. For instance, in defining the word one must distinguish it from other linguistic units, such as the phoneme, the morpheme, or the word - group. In contrast with a definition, description enumerates all the essential features of a notion. The definition of every basic notion is a very hard task; the definition of a word is one of the most difficult in linguistics because the simplest word has many different aspects. It has a sound form because it is a certain arrangement of 9

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan morphemes; when used in actual speech, it may occur in different word- forms, and signal various meanings. Being the central element of any language system, the word is a sort of focus for the problems of phonology, lexicology, syntax, morphology and also for some other sciences that have to deal with language and speech, such as philosophy and psychology, and probably quite a few other branches of knowledge. All attempts to characterize the word are necessarily specific form each domain of science and are therefore considered one - sided by the representatives of all other domains and criticized for incompleteness. The variants of definitions were so numerous that some authors collecting them produced woks of impressive scope and bulk.A few examples will suffice to show that any definition is conditioned by the aims and interests of its author. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), one of the great English philosophers, revealed a materialistic approach to the problem of nomination when he wrote that words are not mere sounds but names of matter. Three centuries later the great Russian physiologist I. P. Pavlov (1849-1936) examined the word in connection with his studies of the second signal system, and defined it as the universal signal that can substitute any other signal from the environment in evoking a response in a human organism. One of the modern developments of science and engineering is machine translation. It also deals with words and requires a rigorous definition for them: by word it meant «a sequence of graphemes which can occur between spaces, or the representation of such a sequence on morphemic level». Within the scope of linguistics the word has been defined syntactically, semantically, phonologically and by combining various approaches. It has been syntactically defined for the instance as «the minimum sentence» by H. Sweet and much later by L. Bloomfield as «a minimum free form». This last definition, although structural in orientation, may be said to be, to a certain degree, equivalent to Sweet’s, as practically it amounts to the same thing: free forms are later defined as «forms which occur as sentence». Within the scope of linguistic the word has been defined syntactically, semantically, phonologically and by combining various 10

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan approaches. It has been syntactically defined for instance as «the minimum sentence» by H. Sweet and much later by L. Bloomfield as « a minimum free form». This last definition, also structural in orientation, may be said to be, to a certain degree, equivalent to Sweet’s, as practically it amounts to the same thing: free forms are later defined as «forms which occur as sentences». E. Sapir takes into consideration the syntactic and semantic aspects when he calls the word «one of the smallest, completely satisfying bits of isolated meaning, into which the sentence resolves itself.» Sapir also points out one more, very important characteristic of the word, its indivisibility: «It can not be cut into without a disturbance of meaning, one or two other or both of the several parts remaining as a helpless waif on our hands.» The essence of indivisibility will be clear from a comparison of the article and the prefix a- in a lion and alive. A lion is a word group because we can separate its elements and insert other words between them: a living lion, a dead lion. Alive is a word: it is indivisible, i.e. structurally impermeable: nothing can be inserted between its elements. The morpheme a- is not free, it is not a word. The situation becomes more complicated if we cannot be guided by solid spelling. The Oxford English Dictionary, for instance, does not include the reciprocal pronouns each other and one another under separate headings, although they should certainly be analyzed as word-units, not as word- groups since they have become indivisible: we now say with each other and one another instead of the older one with another or each with other. Altogether is one word according to its spelling, but how one to treat all right, which is rather a similar combination? When discussing the internal cohesion of the word the English linguist John Lyons points out that it should be discussed in terms of two criteria «positional mobility» and «uninterruptability». To illustrate the first he segments into morphemes the following sentence: the- boy- s- walk- ed- slow- ly- up- the- hill 11

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan The sentence may be regarded as a sequence of ten morphemes, which occur in a particular order relative to one another. There are several possible changes in this order which order yield an acceptable English sentence: slow- ly- the- boy- s- walk- ed- up- the- hill up- the- hill- slow- ly- walk- ed- the- boy- s Yet under all the permutations certain groups of morphemes behave as ‘blocks’-they occur always together, and in the same relative to one another. there is no possibility of the sequence s-the-boy, ly-slow,ed-walk. «One of the characteristics of the word is that it tends to be eternally stable (in terms of the order of the component morphemes), but positional mobile (permutable with other words in the same sentence)». A purely semantic treatment will be found in Stephen Ullman’s explanation: with him connected discourse, if analyzed from the semantic point of view, «will fall into certain number if meaningful segments which are ultimately composed if meaningful units are termed words».The semantic-phonological approach may be illustrated by Gardener’s definition: «A word is an articulate sound - symbol in its aspect of denoting something which is spoken about». The eminent French linguistic A. Meillet combines the semantic, phonological and grammatical criteria and advances a formula which underlies many subsequent definitions, both abroad and in our country, including the one given in the beginning of this book: «A word is defined by the association of a particular meaning with a particular group of sounds capable of a particular grammatical employment. This definition does not permit us to distinguish words from phrases because not only child, but a pretty child as well a combinations of a particular group of sounds with a particular meaning capable of a particular grammatical employment.We can, nevertheless, accept this formula if we add that a word is characterized by positional mobility within a sentence and indivisibility, and that the word is the smallest significant unit of a given language, capable of 12

This addition is necessary because it permits us to create a basis for the oppositions between the word the phrase, the word and the phoneme, and the word and the morpheme: their common feature is that they are all units if the language, their difference lies in the fact that the phoneme is not significant, and a morpheme cannot be used as a complete utterance.Another reason for this supplement is the widespread skepticism concerning the subject. It has even become a debatable point whether a word is a linguistic unit and not an arbitrary segment of speech. This opinion is put forth by S. Potter, who writes «unlike a phoneme or a syllable, a word is not a linguistic unit at all». He calls it a conventional and arbitrary segment of utterance, and finally adopts the already mentioned definition of Bloomfield. This position is, however, untenable, and in fact Potter himself makes ample use of the word as a unit in his linguistic analysis.The weak point of all the above definitions is that they do not establish the relationship between language and thought, which is formulated if we treat the word as a dialectical unity of a form and content, in which the form is the spoken or written expression which calls up a specific meaning, whereas the content is the meaning rendering the emotion or the concept in the mind of the speaker which he intends to convey to his listener.Summing up our review of different definitions, we come to the conclusion that they are abound to be strongly dependent upon the line of approach, the aim the scholar has in view. For a comprehensive word theory, therefore, a description seems more appropriate than a definition.In what follows, a description of the word based on the results of investigations carried out in out country is presented. The problem of creating of a word theory based upon the materialistic understanding of the relationship between word and thought, on the one hand, and language and society, on the other, has been one of the most discussed for many years. The efforts of many eminent scholars such as V.V. Vinagradov, A.I. Smirinitsky, O.S. Ahmanova, M.D. Stepanova - the name but a few resulted in throwing light on this problem and achieved a clear exposition of the word as a 13

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan basic unit of the language. The main points may now be summarized.The word is one of the fundamental units of language. It is a dialectical unity of form and content. Its content or meaning is not identical to notion, but it may reflect human notions, and in this sense may be considered as the form of their existence. Notions fixed in the meanings of words are formed as generalized and approximately correct reflections of reality; therefore in signifying them words reflect reality in their content. The acoustic aspect of the word serves to name the objects of reality, not to reflect them. In this sense the word may be regarded as a sign. 14

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan 1.2 Classification of compound words Compound words may be described from different points of view and consequently may be classified according to different principles . they may be viewed from the point of view: 1) of general relationship and degree of its semantic independence of components; 2) of the parts of speech compound words represent; 3) of the means of composition used to link the two italics together; 4) of the type of semantics that are brought together to from a compound; 5) of the correlative relations with the system of free word - groups.Each type compound words based on the above –mentioned principles should also be described from the point of view of the degree of its potential power, i. e . its productivity , its relevancy to the system of modern English compounds. This description must aim at finding and setting a system of ordered structural and semantic rules for productive types of compound words on analogy with which an infinite number of new compounds constantly appear in the language. Relations between the from the point of view italics of compounds, which shows the degree of semantic independence there are two types of relationship between the italics of compound words that are generally recognized in linguistic literature: the relations of coordination and subordination , and accordingly compound words fall into two classes: coordinative compounds ( often termed copulative or additive ) and subordinative (often termed determinative). In coordinative compounds the two italics are semantically equally important as in fighter–bomber, oak–tree, girl – friend, Anglo – American. The constituent bases belong to the same class and most often to the same semantic group. Coordinative compounds make up a comparatively small group of words . Coordinative compounds fall into three groups: a ) reduplicative compounds which are made up by the repetitions of the same base as in goody – goody , fifty – fifty , hush – hush , pooh – pooh . they are only partially motivated . 15

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan b ) compounds formed by joining the phonically variated rhythmic twin forms which either alliterate with the same initial consonant but vary the vowels as in chit – chat , zig –zag , sing –song , or rhyme by varying the initial consonants as in clap – trap , a walkie – talkie , helter – shelter. This subgroup stands very much apart. It is very often referred to pseudo – compounds and considered by some linguists irrelevant to productive word – formation owing to the doubtful morphemic status of their components. The constituent members of compound words of their own, are not found as stems of independently functioning words. They are motivated mainly through the rhythmic doubling of fanciful sound- clusters. Coordinative compounds of both subgroups (a, b) are mostly restricted to the colloquial layer, are marked by a heavy emotive charge and possess a very small degree of productivity. c ) the bases of additive compounds such as a queen – bee, an actor – manager, unlike the compound words of the first two subgroups, are built on stems of the independently functioning words of the same parts of speech. These bases often semantically stand in the genus – species relations. They denote a person or an object that is two things at the same time a secretary - stenographer is thus a person who is both stenographer and a sectary, a bed – sitting – room (a bed – sitter) is both a bed – room and a sitting – room at the same time . among additive compounds there is a specific subgroup of compound adjectives one of italics of which is a bound root - morpheme. This group is limited to the names of nationalities such as Chino - Japanese, Anglo - Saxon, Afro - Asian , etc. Additive compounds of this group are mostly fully motivated but have a very limited degree of productivity.However it must be stressed that though the distinction between coordinative and subordinative compounds is generally made, it is to doubt and there is no hard and fast bolder - line between them. On the contrary, the border - line is rather 16

It often happens that one and the same compound may with equal right be interpreted either way - as a coordinative or a subordinative compound, e.g. a woman - doctor may be understood as ‘a woman who is at the same time a doctor’ or there canbe traced a difference of importance between the components and it may be primarily felt to be ‘a doctor who happens to be a woman’, also a mother - goose, a clock - tower.In subordinative compounds the components are neither structurally nor semantically equal in importance but are based on the domination of the head – member which is, as a rule , the second. The second italics thus is the semantically and grammatically dominant part of the word, which preconditions the part - of - speech meaning of the whole compound as in stone - deaf , age - long which are obviously adjectives, a wrist - watch , road - building , a baby - sitter which are nouns.Subordinative compounds make the bulk of modern English compound words, as to productivity most of the productive types are subordinative compounds. Compounding or word-compositions is of the productive types of word- formation in modern English. Composition like all other ways of deriving words has its own peculiarities as to the means used the nature of bases and their distributions, as to the range of application, the scope of semantic classes and the factors conductive to productivity. Compounds, as has been mentioned elsewhere, are made up of two italics which are both derivational bases. Compound words are inseparable vocabulary units. They are formally and semantically dependent on the constituent bases and the semantic relations between them which mirror the relations between the motivating units. The italics of compound words represent bases of all three structural types. The bases built on stems may be of different degree of complexity as e. g. week- end, office - management, postage - stamp, aircraft - carrier, fancy - dress - maker, etc. However , this complexity of structure of bases is not typical of the bulk of modern English compounds. English compounds may be classified 17

In endocentric nouns the referent is named by one of the elements and given a further characteristic by the other. In exocentric nouns only the combination of both elements names the referent. A further subdivision takes into account the character of stems. Type flagman. A noun 18

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan stem is determined by another noun stem. This is a most productive type, the number of examples being practically unlimited. Type countryman also consists of noun stems but the relationship between the elements is different. Countrymanis an appositional com pound. The second element denotes a wider sphere and the first element restricts the sphere. Type flyman shows a combination of a derived verbal stem with a noun stem. Type fireman consisting of a verbal stem and a noun stem is of a comparatively recent origin. Type fisherman has already been discussed. The first stem here very often is not an adjective but a Participle II: cutwork. Sometimes the seman tic relationship of the first element to the second is different. For instance, a green-grocer is not a grocer who happens to be green but one who sells vegetables. There are several groups with a noun stem for the first element and various verbal noun stems for the second: housekeeping, sunrise, time- server. In exocentric compounds the referent is not named. The type scarecrow denotes the agent (a person or a thing) who or which performs the action named by the combination of the stems. In the case of scarecrow, it is a person or a thing employed in scaring birds. The type consists of a verbal stem followed by a noun stem. The personal nouns of this type are as a rule imaginative and often contemptuous: cut-throat, dare-devil ‘ a reck less person’, ‘a murderer’, lickspittle ‘ a toady’, ‘a flatterer’, pickpocket ‘ a thief’, turncoat ‘ a renegade’. A very productive and numerous groups are nouns derived from verbs with postpositive, or more rarely with adverbs. B lackout ‘ a period of complete darkness’, for example, when all the electric lights go out on the stage of the theatre, or when all lights in a city are covered as a pre caution against air raids; also ‘a temporary loss of consciousness’; break-dawn ‘ a stoppage through accident’, ‘a nervous collapse’; hangover ‘ an unpleasant after- effect’, especially after drink; make-up, a polysemantic compound which may mean, for example, ‘the way anything is arranged’, ‘o ne's mental qualities’, ‘cosmetics’; take-off, also polysemantic: ‘cari cature’, ‘the beginning of a flight’, etc. This type consists chiefly of impersonal deverbal nouns denoting some action or specific instance as in the following example: I could just imag ine 19

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan the brush-off he’d had . Other examples are: comedown, draw back, drop-out, feedback, frame-up, knockout, set-back, splash-down, take- in, teach-in and many more. A special subgroup is formed by personal nouns with a somewhat derogatory connotation, as in go-between ‘ an intermediary’, start-back ‘ a deserter’. Sometimes these compounds are keenly ironical: diehard ‘ an irreconcilable conservative’, pin-up (such a girl as might have her photograph pinned up on the wall for admiration, also the photograph itself), pick-up ‘ a chance acquaintance’, ‘a prostitute’. More seldom the pattern is used for names of objects, mostly disparaging. For instance: “ Are these your books?” “Yes. They were a very odd collection of throw-outs from my flat.” The group of bahuvrihi compound nouns is not very numerous. The term “bahuvrihi” is borrowed from the grammarians of ancient India. Its literal meaning is ‘much-riced’. It is used to designate possessive exo centric formations in which a person, animal or thing are metonymically named after some striking feature they possess, chiefly a striking feature in their appearance. This feature is in its turn expressed by the sum of the meanings of the compound's immediate constituents. The formula of the bahuvrihi compound nouns is adjective stem+noun stem. The follow ing extract will illustrate the way bahuvrihi compounds may be coined: I got discouraged with sitting all day in the backroom of a police station... with six assorted women and a man with a wooden leg. At the end of a week, we all knew each other’s life histories, including that of the wooden- l e g ’ s u n c l e , w h o l i v e d a t S e t s e y a n d t o b e c a r e f u l o f h i s d i e t . Semantically the bahuvrihi are almost invariably characterized by a depreciative ironical emotional tone. B igwig ‘ a person of importance’, black-shirt ‘ an Italian fascist’ (also, by analogy, any fascist), fathead ‘ a dull, stupid person’, greenhorn ‘ an ignoramus’, highbrow ‘ a person who claims to be superior in intellect and culture’, lazy-bones ‘ a lazy person’. In this connection care should be taken not to compound words with polymorphic words of secondary derivatives built according to an affixal pattern but on a compound stem for its base such as , e . g . , school – mastership ([n+n ]+ suf) - housewife, (prep +[n + n]), to week end , to 20

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan spotlight ([n+n]+onversion).Compound words like all other inseparable vocabulary units take shape in a definite system of grammatical forms, syntactic and semantic features. Compounds, on the one hand, are generally clearly distinguished from and often opposed to free word – groups, on the other hand they lie astride the border – line between words and word – groups and display close ties and correlation with the system of free word – groups. The structural inseparability of compound words finds expression in the unity of their specific distributional pattern and specific stress and spelling pattern . Structurally compound words are characterized by the specific order and arrangement in which bases follow one another . The order in which the two bases are placed within a compound is rigidly fixed in modern English and its the second italics that makes the head – member of the word , i. e. its structural and semantic centre . The head – member is of basic importance as it preconditions both the lexico - grammatical and semantic features of the first component. It is of interest to not that the difference between stems (that serve as bases in compound words ) and word –form they coincide with is most obvious in some compounds , especially in compound adjectives. Adjectives like long, wide, rich are characterized by grammatical forms of degrees of comparison longer, wider, richer. The corresponding stems functioning as bases in compound words lack grammatical independence and forms proper to the words and retain only the part- of- speech meaning ; thus compound adjectives with adjectival stems for their second components , e. g.age – long , oil – rich , inch – wide , do not form degrees of comparison as the compound adjective oil – rich does not form them the way the word rich does , but conforms to the general rule of polysyllabic adjectives and has analytical forms of degrees of comparison. The same difference between words and stems is not so noticeable in compound nouns with the noun – stem for the second component.Phonetically 21

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan compounds are also marked by a specific structure of their own. no phonemic changes of bases occur in composition but the compound word acquires a new stress pattern, different from the stress in the motivating words, for example words key and hole or hot and house each possess their own stress but when the stems of these words are brought together to make up a new compound word, keyhole –a hole in a lock into which a key fits, or hot - house - a heated building for growing delicate plants , the latter is given a different stress pattern – a unity stress on the first component in our case. Component words have three stress patterns: a) a high or unity stress on the first component as in honeymoon, doorway, etc. b) a double stress, with a primary stress on the first component and a weaker, secondary stress on the second component , e . g . blood - vessel, mad - doctor - a psychiatrist, washing - machine, etc. These two stress patterns are the commonest among compound words from word - groups, especially when the arrangement and order of its parallel the word - order and the distributional pattern of a phrase, thus a green - house - a glass house for cultivating delicate plants is contrasted to a green - house - a house that is painted green; dancing - girl - a dancer to a dancing girl - a girl who is dancing; a mad - doctor - a psychiatrist to mad doctor - a doctor who is mad. the significance of these stress patterns is nowhere so evident as in nominal compounds built on the n + n derivational pattern in which the arrangement and order of the stems fail to distinguish a compound word from a phrase. c ) it is not infrequent , however , for both italics to have level stress as in e . g. arm – chai, icy – cold, grass – green, etc. The significance of the stress pattern by itself should not be overestimated though , as it cannot be an overall criterion and cannot always serve as a sufficient clue to draw a line of distinction between compound 22

In most cases the level stress pattern is accompanied by other structural and graphic indications of inseparability. Graphically most compounds have two types of spelling – they are spelt either solidly or with a hyphen. Both types of spelling when accompanied by structural and phonetic peculiarities serve as a sufficient indication of inseparability of compound words in contradistinction to phrases. It is true that hyphenated spelling by itself may be sometimes misleading, as it may be used in word – groups to emphasize their phraseological character as in e. g. daughter – in – law , man – of war , brother – in – arms or in longer combinations of words to indicate the semantic unity of a string of words used attributively as, e . g. I – know – what – you 're – going – to – say expression, we – are – in – the – know jargon, the young – must – be – right attitude. The two types of spelling typical of compounds, however, are not rigidly observed and there are numerous fluctuations between solid or hyphenated spelling on the one hand and spelling with a break between the components on the other , especially in nominal compounds of the n+n type . The spelling of these compounds varies from other author and from dictionary to dictionary. For example, the words war – path, war – time, money – lender, are spelt both with a hyphen and solidly; blood – poisoning, money – order, wave – length, war – ship - with a hyphen and with a break ; underfoot , insofar , underhand - solidly and with a break . It is noteworthy that new compounds of this type tend to solid or hyphenated spelling. This inconsistency of spelling (equally typical of word – groups) makes the problem of distinguished between compound words (of the n+n type in particular ) and word – groups especially difficult.In this connection it should be stressed that modern English nouns (in the common case, sing) as has been universally recognized possess an attributive function in which they are regularly used to form numerous nominal phrases as, e. g. peace years, stone steps, government office, etc.Such variable nominal phrases are semantically fully derivable from the meanings of the two nouns and are 23

This system of nominal phrases exists side by side with the specific and numerous class of nominal compounds which as a rule carry an additional semantic component not found in phrases.It is also important to stress that these two classes of vocabulary units – compound words and free phrases - are not only opposed but also stand in close correlative relations to each other.Semantically compound words are generally motivated units. the meaning of the component is first of all derived from the combined lexical meanings of its components. the semantic peculiarity of the derivational bases and the semantic difference between the base and the stem on which the latter is built is most obvious in compound words. Compound words with a common second or first component can serve as illustrations. The stem of the word board is polysemantic and its multiple meanings serve as different derivational bases, each with its own selective range for the semantic features of the other component , each forming a separate set of compound words , based on specific derivative relations. Thus the base board meaning’ a flat piece of wood square or oblong’ makes a set of compounds chess – board, notice – board, key – board, foot – board, sign – board; Compounds paste – board, cardboard are built on base meaning thick, stiff paper; The base board – meaning an authorized body of men, forms compounds school – board, board – room. The same can be observed in words built on the polysemantic stem of the word foot . For example , the base foot – in, foot – print, foot – pump, foothold, foot – bath foot – wear has the meaning of the terminal part of the leg, in foot – note, foot – lights, foot – stone the base foot – has the meaning of the lower part and in foot – high, foot – wide, footrule – measure of length . It is obvious from the above – given examples that the meanings of the bases of compound words are interdependent and that the choice of each is delimited as in variable word – groups by the nature of the other its of the word. It thus may well be said that the combination of bases serves as a kind of minimal inner context distinguished the particular 24

In this connection we should also remember the significance of the differential meaning found in both components which becomes especially obvious in a set of compounds containing identical base. In English, words, particularly adjectives and nouns, are combined into compound structures in a variety of ways. And once they are formed, they sometimes metamorphose over time. A common pattern is that two words - fire fly, say - will be joined by a hyphen for a time - fire-fly - and then be joined into one word - firefly. In this respect, a language like German, in which words are happily and immediately linked one to the other, might seem to have an advantage. There is only one sure way to know how to spell compounds in English: use an authoritative dictionary. Compounds that contain affixes , such as house-build(er) and single- mind(ed)(ness) , as well as adjective-adjective compounds and verb-verb compounds, such as blue-green and freeze-dried , are often hyphenated. Compounds that contain articles , prepositions or conjunctions , such as rent-a-cop , mother-of-pearl and salt-and-pepper , are also often hyphenated.  The open or spaced form consisting of newer combinations of usually longer words, such as distance learning , player piano , lawn tennis , etc.Usage in the US 26

www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan CHAPTER II Translation problems of compound nouns with the component “MAN” 2.1 Translation activity and practice of translation As a kind of practical activities translation (or the practice of translation) is a set of actions performed by the translator while rendering ST into another language. These actions are largely intuitive and the best results are naturally achieved by translators who are best suited for the job, who are well-trained or have a special aptitude, a talent for it. Masterpieces in translation are created by the past masters of the art, true artists in their profession. At its best translation is an art, a creation of a talented, high-skilled professional. 3 As any observable phenomenon, translation can be the object of scientific study aimed at understanding its nature, its components and their interaction as well as various factors influencing it or linked with it in a meaningful way. The science of translation or translatology is concerned both with theoretical and applied aspects of translation studies. A theoretical description of the translation phenomenon is the task of the theory of translation. Theoretical research is to discover what translation is, to find out what objective factors underlie the translator's intuition, to describe the ways and methods by which the identity of the communicative value of ST and TT is achieved. The objective knowledge obtained can then be used to help the translator to improve his performance as well as to train future translators.The theory oftranslation provides the translator with the appropriate tools of analysis and synthesis, makes him aware of what he is to look for in the original text, what type of information he must convey in TT and how he should act to achieve his goal. In the final analysis, however, his trade remains an art. For science gives the translator the tools, but it takes brains, intuition and talent to handle the tools with great proficiency. Different aspects of translation can be studied with the methods of the respective sciences. Up to date most of theoretical research of translation has been done within the framework of linguistics. The linguistic theory of translation is concerned with translation as a form of speech communication establishing contact between communicants who speak different languages. The basis of this theory is linguistics in the broadest sense of the word, that is, macrolinguistics with all its new branches, such as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, text linguistics, communicative linguistics, etc., studying the language structure and its functioning in speech in their relationship to mind, culture and society. Language, which makes possible communication between people, is part of all human activities, of life itself. 4 The core of the translation theory is the general theory of translation which is concerned with the fundamental aspects of translation inherent in the nature of bilingual communication and therefore common to all translation events, irrespective of what languages are involved or what kind of text and under what circumstances was translated. Basically, replacement of ST by TT of the same communicative value is possible because both texts are produced in human speech governed by the same rules and implying the same relationships between language, reality and the human mind. All languages are means of communication, each language is used to externalize and shape human thinking, all language units are meaningful entities related to non-linguistic realities, all speech units convey information to the communicants. In any language communication is made possible through a complicated logical interpretation by the users of the speech units, involving an assessment of the meaning of the language signs against the information derived from the contextual situation, general knowledge, previous experience, various associations and other factors. www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan translation deals, so to speak, with translation universals and is the basis for all other theoretical study in this area, since it describes what translation is and what makes it possible.An important part of the general theory of translation is the theory of equivalence aimed at studying semantic relationships between ST and TT. It has been noted that there is a presumption of semantic identity between the translation and its source text. At the same time it is easily demonstrable that there is, hi fact, no such identity for even a cursory examination of any translation reveals inevitable losses, increments or changes of the information transmitted. The general theory of translation describes the basic principles which bold good for each and every translation event. In each particular case, however, the translating process is influenced both by the common basic factors and by a number of specific variables which stem from the actual conditions and modes of the translator's work: the type of original texts he has to cope with, the form in which ST is presented to him and the form in which he is supposed to submit his translation, the specific requirements he may be called upon to meet in his work, etc.Contemporary translation activities are characterized by a great variety of types, forms and levels of responsibility. The translator has to deal with works of the great authors of the past and of the leading authors of today, with intricacies of science fiction and the accepted stereotypes of detective stories. He must be able to cope with the elegancy of expression of the best masters of literary style and with the tricks and formalistic experiments of modern avant-gardists. The translator has to preserve and fit into a different linguistic and social context a gamut of shades of meaning and stylistic nuances expressed in the original text by a great variety of language devices: neutral and emotional words, archaic words and new coinages, metaphors and similes, foreign borrowings, dialectal, jargon and slang expressions, stilted phrases and obscenities, proverbs and quotations, illiterate or inaccurate speech, and so on and so forth. The original text may deal with any subject from general philosophical principles or postulates to minute technicalities in some obscure field of human endeavor. The translator has to tackle complicated specialized descriptions and reports on new discoveries in science or technology 30

His duty is to translate diplomatic representations and policy statements, scientific dissertations and brilliant satires, maintenance instructions and after-dinner speeches, etc.Translating a play the translator must bear in mind the requirements of theatrical presentation, and dubbing a film he must see to it that his translation fits the movement of the speakers’ lips.The translator may be called upon to make his translation in the shortest possible time, while taking a meal or against the background noise of loud voices or rattling type-writers.In simultaneous interpretation the translator is expected to keep pace with the fastest speakers, to understand all kinds of foreign accents and defective pronunciation, to guess what the speaker meant to say but failed to express due to his inadequate proficiency in the language he speaks. 5 In consecutive interpretation he is expected to listen to long speeches, taking the necessary notes, and then to produce his translation in full or compressed form, giving all the details or only the main ideas.In some cases the users will be satisfied even with the most general idea of the meaning of the original, in other cases the translator may be taken to task for the slightest omission or minor error.Each type of translation has its own combination of factors influencing the translating process. The general theory of translation should be supplemented by a number of special translation theories identifying major types of translation activities and describing the predominant features of each type. Another important branch of the theory of translation is concerned with the study of ST and TT units which can replace each other in the translating process. The creation of equivalent texts results in, and in part is dependent on, the equivalence of correlated language units in the two texts. In any two languages there are pairs of units which are of identical or similar communicative value and can replace each other in translation. The communicative value of a language element depends both on its own semantics and on the way it is used in speech. Therefore translation equivalence 5 Чернов Г. It follows that equivalent units cannot be discovered with confidence before a certain amount of TT’s have been compared with their ST’s. It is obvious that a description of translation equivalents, as opposed to the methods of the general theory of translation, should be bilingual, that is, it should always relate to a definite pair of languages. Moreover, a bilingual theory of translation should study two separate sets of equivalents, with either language considered, in turn, as SL and the other as TL. Nevertheless all bilingual theories of translation proceed from the identical basic assumptions as to the classification of equivalents and their role in the translating process. 6 Of particular interest is that branch of the theory of translation which is concerned with the translating process itself, that is, with the operations required for passing over from ST to TT. It is a great challenge to the translation theory to discover how the translator does the trick, what are his mental processes which ensure production in TL of a text of identical communicative value with the given ST. True, these processes are not directly observable but they can be studied, even though with a certain degree of approximation, in various indirect ways. This direction of the translation theory is of considerable practical value for it makes possible the description of particular methods of translation that can be used by the translator to ensure equivalence between ST and TT. The study of the translating process reveals both the translator’s general strategy and specific techniques used to solve typical translation problems. Mention should be made of one more branch of the theory of translation which deals with the pragmatic aspects of the translating process. The communicants involved in interlingual communication speak different languages but they also belong to different cultures, have different general knowledge, different social and historical background. www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan ST contents may sometimes be partially or fully misunderstood by the receptors of the translation or fail to produce a similar effect upon them. The translator has to assess the possible communicative effect of TT and take pains to ensure an adequate understanding of its message by TR. This may necessitate expanding or modifying the original message to make it more meaningful to the members of a different language community.A further pragmatic adaptation may be imperative if TT is addressed to some specific social or professional group of people or if the translation event has some additional pragmatic purpose. In some cases the pragmatic value of translation is the major factor in assessing the quality of the translator’s performance. Psychologically viewed, the translating process must needs include two mental processes - understanding and verbalization. First, the translator understands the contents of ST, that is, reduces the information it contains to his own mental program, and then he develops this program into TT. The problem is that these mental processes are not directly observable and we do not know much of what that program is and how the reduction and development operations are performed. That is why the translating process has to be described in some indirect way. The translation theory achieves this aim by postulating a number of translation models. 7 A model is a conventional representation of the translating process describing mental operations by which the source text or some part of it may be translated, irrespective of whether these operations are actually performed by the translator. It may describe the translating process either in a general form or by listing a number of specific operations (or transformations) through which the process can, in part, be realized. Translation models can be oriented either toward the situation reflected in the ST contents or toward the meaningful components of the ST contents.The existing models of the translating process are, in fact, based on the same assumptions which we considered in discussing the problem of 7 Рецкер Я. www.arxiv.uz saytidan yuklab olingan equivalence, namely, the situati о na1 (or referential) model is based on the identity of the situations described in the original text and in the translation, and the semantic-transformational model postulates the similarity of basic notions and nuclear structures in different languages. These postulates are supposed to explain the dynamic aspects of translation. In other words, it is presumed that the translator actually makes a mental travel from the original to some interlingual level of equivalence and then further on to the text of translation.In the situational model this intermediate level is extralinguistic. It is the described reality, the facts of life that are represented by the verbal description. The process of translating presumably consists in the translator getting beyond the original text to the actual situation described in it. This is the first step of the process, i.e. the break-through to the situation. The second step is for the translator to describe this situation in the target language. Thus the process goes from the text in one language through the extralinguistic situation to the text in another language. The translator first understands what the original is about and then says “the same things” in TL. 2.2 Comparative study of Uzbek compound words with English ones Types of words according to their formation. Words divide into three types due to their formation: simple word, compound word and couple word. The words 34

Simple words are also divided into two subgroups at the same time. They are root and composite words. Words which don’t have a word forming affix with them are called root words. For example: maktab, bola, kitob. Composite words are usually build by adding affix to the care component. For example: gul - chi, suv - chi, terimchi. We can also form compound and noun words by uniting the two or more than two care – words. For example: qo’lqop,beshiktervatar, o’qibbermoq, temiryo’l, teleminora. We can form a couple word also by two various meaningful care words. They are couple words. For example: katta – kichik, ona – bola, ota – bola, u–bu, uch–to’rt. Compound words and the ways of their writing.Nouns which are formed by the conjunction of two or more than two meaningful core– components are called compound nouns. The parts of a compound noun actually be in syntactic relations as followings: 1) attribute + (aniqlanmish): qo’lningqopi - qo’lqop, tomningorqasi - tomorqa, sholiningpoyasi - sholipoya. 2)object + predicate: molniboqar – molboqar, muzniyorar – muzyorar. 3) modifier + predicate: bosiboldi – bosvoldi, beshotar – beshotar. The following types of compound nouns are written together: 1) compound nouns which mean nation and are pronounced with one prime stress. For example: gultojixo’roz, qovoqari, belbog’. 2) с ompound nouns which are participle and second part of them are formed by the suffix - ar. For example: molboqar, otboqar. 35

For example: Oqdaryo, O’rtasaroy, Ko’kbuloq, Oltiariq. 4) common component nouns which have the affixes aro, umum, butun. For example: xalqaro, umumxalq, butunittifoq. The following types of compound nouns are written separately: 1. compound nouns which the second part of them are formed by nominal nouns. For example: butunrossiya, umumovrupa. 2. compoundnouns whose first parts are adjective and second parts are nominal nouns. For example: Muxammadrizo, Muxammad Yusuf, MunavvaraMurodqizi. simple, compound and couple adjectives, the way of their writing. Adjectives are of three types according to their formation. they are simple, compound and couple.Adjectives which is composed of two or more than two core – component and mean one sign or feature are called compound adjectives. Compound adjectives in uzbeklike qo’lbola, o’zbilarmon, ochko’z, sohibjamol are pronounced wholly and written together. There are also compound adjectives which are lexically and grammatically significant when their parts are taken separately. These compound adjectives are pronounced with separate accent and written in separate way too. As an example they are: bodom – qovoq, yalang – oyoq, jigar – rang, sof – dil.Compound and couple verbs, the ways of their writing. The verbs which are formed by the conjunction of two more than two verbs which have different meanings are called compound verbs: kulqo’ymoq, qarorqilmoq, yetibborgan. Compound verbs are divided into two subgroups according to the differentially of parts of them. 36

The first part of the first type above is usually considered a noun the noun part is called a leader part and the latter part is called (ko’makchi) part.The parts of second type of compound verbs are taken from verbs usually .The first part is actually taken from (ravishdosh) with the conjunctive -b, (-ib). It is considered the leading part because it carries the lexical meaning which compound verb has the second part is called auxiliary verb. Auxiliary verb serves for the formation of compound verb and add various meanings to it at the same time. For example: ishlabtur (the duration of action), ishlabbo’l (the end of action), ishlabyur (repeatition of the action). The parts of compound are written separately. Compound verbs like aytaoldi, ko’raolmadi are written together as following: aytoldi, ko’roldi. There are also other examples: sunday – yakshanba, landesman – hamshahar, hamqishloq, eyebrow – qosh, motherland – onayurt, landholder – yeregasi, landlady – mehmonxona, mehmonxonaegasi, hook – and - ladder – o’to’chirishmashinasi, dog – in – a blanket - pudingningbirturi, bread – and – butter - buterbrod, man – of - war - harbiykema, mother – in – law -qaynona, forget – me not – bo’tako’z, lazy – bones - dangasa, knife – grinder - pichoqcharxlovchi, shoe – maker - kosib, etikdo’z. 2.3 Translation analysis of compound words with component “Man” 37

TL units in TT that are used to render the meaning of the respective SL units in ST can be said to substitute for the latter as their functional equivalents (or correspondences). Since language units are often used in their accepted meanings many SL units have regular equivalents in TL which are used in numerous TT as substitutes to those units. For example: I. Gafurov translated “The old man and the sea”, in which he brilliantly renders the following sentences: They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Others, of the older fishermen , looked at him and were sad. UlarTerrasgakelibo’tirishdi. Ko’pginabaliqchilarcholnimazaxqilishar, ammo u buniko’ngligaog’irolmasdi. Yoshi ulg’ayibroqqolganbaliqchilaresaungaqarabxafabo’libketishardi. Here the sentence ‘ fishermen ’ was translated into Uzbek as ‘ baliqchilar’ . And the second one was also translated into Uzbek with the same word. Next translation book we chose is J. London’s “Martin Eden”: It was at this time, at the lowest ebb, that the smooth-running editorial machine broke down. A cog must have slipped or an oil-cup run dry, for the postman brought him one morning a short, thin envelope. Let’s see the translation of ‘postman’: First sentence describes no difficultness, because compound noun - “postman” – was translated as ‘pochtachi’ . Other SL units may have several equivalents each. Such one-to-many correspondence between SL and TL units is characteristic of most regular equivalents. The existence of a number of non- permanent (or variable) equivalents to a SL units implies the necessity of selecting one of them in each particular case, taking into account the way the unit is used in ST and the points of difference between the semantics of its equivalents in TL.Depending on the type of the language units involved regular equivalents can be classified as lexical,phraseological or 38

The choice of the equivalent will depend on the relative importance of a particular semantic element in the act of communication. For instance, the English word "barman" may denote a man who serves other with drinks. Its translation will depend on which of the aspects comes to the fore.For examples: England has several counties and there are county-boards in each county. These boards are made up by aldermen . Angliya bir necha graflikdan tashkil topgan bo‘lib, h ar bir graflik o‘zining kengashiga ega. Ushbu kengashlarni esa olderman deb ataluvchi kengash a’zolari tashkil etadi. During the Second World War Patrick was an artilleryman . Ikkinchi ja h on urushi davrida Patrik artilleriyachi bo‘lgan. “Chicago, Chicago!”, cried brakeman . Chikago, Chikago – deyaqichqirdiprovodnik. In this session all were here: assemblymen , congressmen , councilmen , and even aopposition fugleman came. Bu yig‘inda ma h alliy qonun chiqaruvchi organ a’zolari, kongressmenlar, kengash a’zolari va xattoki oppozitsiya ra h bari h am ishtirok etdi. In these examples you can see complete correspondence ( artilleryman – artilleriyachi , councilman – kengash a’zolari, etc .), partial correspondences and descriptive translation method ( olderman deb ataluvchi kengash a’zolari), transliteration ( kongressmenlar, olderman ). The translator gave all possible ways of translation. Even if a SL unit has a regular equivalent in TL, this equivalent cannot be used in TT whenever the unit is found in ST. An equivalent is but a potential substitute, for the translator's choice is, to a large extent, dependent on the context in which the SL unit is placed in ST. There are two types of context: 39

The linguistic context is made up by the other SL units in ST while the situational context includes the temporal, special and other circumstances under which ST was produced as well as all facts which the receptor is expected to know so that he could adequately interpret the message.It is only by assessing the meanings of SL units in ST against the linguistic and situational contexts that the translator can discover what they mean in the particular case and what equivalents should be chosen as their substitutes. For example: In every ceremony the bandsman stood and announced himself the start. – H ar bir tadbirda orkestrantning o‘zi turib tadbir boshlanishini e’lon qilardi. During the Great Fire in London a score of firemen died and ferrymen left without cabs. - Buyuk yong‘in paytida Londonda qirqta o‘t o‘chiruvchi h alok bo‘ldi va yuk tashuvchilar mashinasiz qolishdi. Seeing a gentleman Carrie tried not to pay attention to him. Allaqanday djentelmenni ko‘rgan Kerri unga a h a m iyat bermaslikka h arakat qildi. The fact that a SL unit has a number of regular equivalents does not necessarily mean that one of them will be used in each particular translation. True, in many cases the translator's skill is well demonstrated in his ability to make a good choice among such equivalents. But not infrequently the context does not allow the translator to employ any of the regular equivalents to the given SL unit. Then the translator has to look for an ad hoc way of translation which will successfully render the meaning of the unit in this particular case. Such an exceptional translation of a SL unit which suits a particular context can be described as an occasional equivalent or a contextual substitute. It is clear, for instance, that there is no other regular equivalents to the English “groomsman” can be used in the translation of the following sentence: Groomsman followed Garry into the big hall. 40

MAN-compounds can be divided into four formal types in which MAN is preceded by a noun ( chairman ), an adjective ( madman ), a verb ( hangman) or a noun + s ( craftsman ). These formal types represent various semantic types, as given below. The capital letters N and V refer to noun and verb respectively. TYPE 1: N1 + N2 (= MAN), where N2 is occupied with the referent of N1 in different ways: a) N2 controls or works N1 ( chairman , fireman , gasman , postman , businessman ); N2 sells, delivers or manufactures N1 ( milkman , newspaper man ); N2 belongs to a specified professional group ( clergyman , policeman , seaman ) b) N2 is (like) N1 ( frogman , spiderman ). The implication is originally figurative, though in modern popular fiction the referent of the compound may also have a more obvious resemblance to N1 in appearance and function. The research reported here was supported by the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence funding for the Research Unit for Variation and Change in English at the Department of English, University of Helsinki. 8 c) N1 indicates a place which is the ‘natural habitat’ of N2 ( bushman , caveman , countryman ). (d) N1 + N2 = N1. In this ‘appositional type’ N2 is redundant, because N1 alone indicates an agent ( washerman , engineerman ). According to Marchand,this type is avoided in educated speech as tautological. 9 TYPE 2: Adj. + N. In this ‘copulative combination’ the relationship of the elements is that of a complement and a subject ( handyman , madman , viz., the man is ‘handy/mad’). The reference is not to a regular occupation but to a characteristic feature. In present-day English, the verbal element is often identical in form with the corresponding noun, so that classifying these combinations as TYPE 3 instead ofTYPE 1 is rather a matter of interpretation. In this combination MAN functions as anagent who acts in the way expressed by the verbal element. The action may be transitive or intransitive. Thus a workman works and a hangman hangs (somebody). TYPE 4: N1 + s + N2. The first element may indicate a particular skill or a solidarity circle ( craftsman , oarsman , backwoodsman , clansman ). We can ignore the origin of s , whether genitival or plural. (Various explanations for different cases are given. 11 The MAN-compounds in the HD are mainly of types 1a and 1b, in which MAN works or controls N1. These seem to be formed freely with any kind of material or object as a handy way of escaping the ‘regular’ expressions of profession. Thus we have bargeman, boat(s)man, coachman, butterman, maltman, milkman, cowman, horseman, pigman, stockman, toadman, clayman, coalman, gasman, ditchman, dockman, harvestman, roadman, woodman, yardman, taxman, eyeman, and so on. A quickbrowse through dialect dictionaries and vocabularies reveals an abundance of additional combinations.MAN- compounds are also used with reference to animals. The productivity of theMAN- element is particularly prominent in pidgins, where it has acquired a suffix-like status and seemslargely to replace other ways of forming agent nouns. As we looked through everything concerning with compounds and it essential for lexicology to determine the place and the role of compounds in English. As our investigation showed compound is one of the most necessary ways enriching vocabulary of a language. Thus we came to conclusion that: 1. Word-formation is the process of creating words from the material available in the language after certain structural and semantic formulas and patterns. 2. As a subject of study, word-formation is that branch of Lexicology, which studies the patterns on which the Eng lish language builds words. Like any other linguistic phe nomenon, word-formation may be studied synchronically and diachronically. 3. There are two principal types of word-formation in Modern English: word- derivation and word-composition. Within the types further distinction is made between various ways and means of word-formation. 4. Distinction is made between productive and non-pro ductive ways of word- formation. 5. С ompound words play an important role in translating form English into Uzbek. 6. С ompound words can affect on lexical meaning and we could show in examples given. When we compared a number of TTs with their STs we discovered that the degree of semantic similarity between the two texts involved in the translating process may vary. In other words the equivalence between ST and TT may be based on the reproduction of different parts of the ST contents. Accordingly, several types of translation equivalence can be distinguished. If in the previous types of equivalence the translation gave the information of “what the original message is for” and “what it is about”, here it also indicates “what is said in the original”, i.e. what aspect of the described situation is mentioned in the communication. For example:The sail was patched with fisherman and, furled; it looked like the flag of permanent defeat. And translation in Uzbek: Dag’almatodanto’qilganyelkanyamalaverib, baliqchihoriganbo’lib, o’rog’likholdayaksonchiqqanpolkningyalovigao’xshardi. Bibliography 50
