Translation demands a deep understanding of both grammar and culture. Translators need to know the rules of a language as well as the habits of the people who speak it. And even for the most experienced professionals, confusion and frustration are familiar feelings. Some of the most common challenges of translation include: language structure. The present qualification paper deals with the study of translation problems of frequent verbs into English which presents a certain interest both for the theoretical investigation and for the practical language use. The first President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Abduganievich Karimov speaking about the future of Uzbekistan underlines that “Harmonious generation is the future guarantee of prosperity. It is our task, to prepare and teach professionally competent and energetic personnel, real patriots to see them in the world depository of science and culture. In this plan the national program about training personnel was worked out on the formation of new generation of specialists, with the high common and professionally cultured, creative and social activity, with the ability to orientate in the social and political life independently, capable to raise and solve the problems to the perspective 1 ”. On December 10, 2012 there was released the decree of the first President of Uzbekistan № 1875 “On measures to further improve foreign language learning system” about the development of the system of learning foreign languages. This decree gives a language learner great amount of opportunities, and at the same time puts concrete tasks for teachers of foreign languages 2 . 1 Kadrlar tayyorlash milliy dasturi: Toshkent 1997, 35 bet 2 Islam Karimov., “On measures to further improve foreign language learning system” December 10, 2012. 3 Actuality of the qualification paper: This work is a qualitative and a quantitative study made to present one of learners’ real problems in translation. That is, the problem of frequent verbs and their translation into English. It attempts to find out the reason why learners of English are unable to find the right/ appropriate equivalents of the verbs into English. The aim of the paper is to study importance of meaning and problems of frequent verbs in translation as well as finding the solution of adequateness. Frequent verbs in both analyzing languages are the same, but in translation some lexical transformations needed and we will look them ever carefully. The novelty of the given work is that in this qualification paper we’ve analyzed verbs and their translation into English. The subject matter of the given work includes problems of frequent verbs in translation. This work has got theoretical and practical importance. The object of the paper is the books of O.Henry, P.Abrahams, “Uzbek xalq ertaklari” and other fiction books. The tasks of the paper: 1. To make a research on frequent verbs and translation problems; 2. To study linguistic materials; 3. To characterize the application of translation principles in the process of translation; 4. To study the use of componential and translation analysis in translation; 5. To review all possible source illustrating frequency. The theoretical importance of the paper . Studying translation problems of frequent verbs shows the fact that equivalence is crucial and be encountered by the translator. This work helps to enrich or to build a basis to develop translation theory. The practical value of the paper. This work can be used in seminars on translation theory and lexicology to debate on issues said above. It is also useful in working out manuals, textbooks and etc. 4 The structure of the paper. This work consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of used literature. The theme of the work is “The problem of frequent verbs and their translation into English”. Introduction highlights actuality, aim, tasks, theoretical and practical values of the paper and etc. The first chapter of the work is named as “General information on frequent verbs and meaning” and focuses on broad themes including the main information of frequent verbs, linguistic literature on meaning, lexical meaning of verbs and their semantic structure. The second chapter is devoted to the problems of frequent verbs in translation. This part plays close attention to the application of translation principles in the process of translation and use of componential and translation analyses of frequent verbs. Conclusion deals with the results achieved during investigating this work. I try to conclude the role and importance of frequent verbs in translation. Total amount of the course work: 60 pages. 5 Chapter I. General information on frequent verbs and meaning 1.1. Review of the linguistic literature on meaning Meaning is one of the most controversial terms in the theory of language. At first sight the understanding of this term seems to present no difficult at all-it is freely used in teaching, interpreting and translation. The scientific definition of meaning however just as the definition of some other basic linguistic terms, such as word, sentences, etc, has been issue of interminable discussions. Since there is no universally accepted definition of meaning we shall confine ourselves to a brief survey of the problem as it is viewed in modern linguistics both in our country and elsewhere. There is possibly no branch linguistics in which there is such a preponderance of idealistic views as in semantics. The basic principle of some psychological schools studying the problem of thinking and meaning was, for instance, the immutability of the meaning of a word. From the point of view of the idealistic school of psychology, the connection between a word and its meaning is a simple associate connection based on the coincidence in our mind of the impression of a word and the impression of the referent denoted by this word. The word recalls its meaning in the same way as the “coat” of a person. Associations connecting a word with its meaning may be strengthened or weakened, may be transferred to other referents on the basis of similarity or contiguity. The linguistic science at present is not able to put forward a definition of meaning which is conclusive. However, there are certain facts of which we can be reasonably sure, and one of them is that the very function of the word as a unit of communication is made possible by its possessing a meaning. Therefore, among the word’s various characteristics, meaning is certainly the most important. Generally speaking, meaning can be more or less described as a component of the word though which a concept is communicated, in this way endowing the word with the ability of denoting real objects, qualities, actions and 6 abstract notions. The complex and somewhat mysterious relationships between referent (object, etc, denoted by the word), concept and word traditionally represented by the triangle. By the “symbol” here is meant the word; thought of reference is no immediate relation between word and referent; it is established only through the concept. On the other hand, there is a hypothesis that concepts can only find their realization through words. It seems that thought is dormant till the word wakens it up. It is only when we hear a spoken word or read a printed word that the corresponding concept springs to (into) mind. The mechanism by which concept (i.e. mental phenomena) are converted into words (i.e. linguistic phenomena) and the reverse process by which a heard or a printed word is converted into a kind of mental picture are not yet understood or described. Probably that is the reason why the process of communication through words, if one gives it some thought, seems nothing short of a miracle. 3 There are broadly speaking two schools of thought in present day linguistics representing the main lines of contemporary thinking on the problem: the referential approach, which seeks to formulate the essence of meaning by establishing the interdependence between words and the things or concepts they denote, and the functional approach, which studies the functions of a word in speech and is less concerned with what meaning is than with how it works. The model of the linguistic sign developed by Ogden and Richards (1923) is represented below: Thought or Reference SYMBOL (“word”) stands for (“thing”) REFERENT The “semiotic triangle”, the “triangle of signification” or the “referential triangle”, as it is called in the literature, suggests that there is no direct relationship between the word or the symbol and the extra-linguistic thing or the referent it denotes (this is indicated by the dotted line connecting them). Морозова “English lexicology” Москва Издательский дом " Дрофа "P-177-78 7 indirectly, by means of the abstract thought or reference in our brains (“reference” is used by Ogden and Richards in a different way than in most of the more recent linguistic theories, where it denotes either the relationship between a full linguistic sign and an extra linguistic referent or the action of a speaker/writer referring to an extra-linguistic object by means of a linguistic sign). According to Ogden and Richards, there is then no direct relationship between the word or the symbol “dog” and a particular class of living beings or a specific element of this class. They stress the point that the meaning of the linguistic symbol (sign), as a concept or thought, has to be clearly distinguished from the extra-linguistic object denoted by it. Words, as linguistic signs, are therefore indirectly related to extra-linguistic referents. F unctional approach to meaning. In most present day methods of lexicological analysis of words are studied in context, a word defined by its functioning within a phrase or a sentence. This functional approach is attempted in contextual analysis, semantic syntax and some other branches of linguistics. The meaning of linguistic unit is studied only through its relation to other linguistic units. So meaning is viewed as the function of a word in speech. All major works on semantic theory have so far been based on referential concepts of meaning. The essential feature of this approach is that it distinguishes between the three components closely connected with meaning: the sound form of the linguistic sign; the concept of underlying this sound of form, and the actual referent. For more convincing evidence of the conventional and arbitrary nature of the connection between sound form and meaning all we have to do is to point to the homonyms. The word “seal [si:l], e.g. means” a piece of wax, lead, etc. Stamped with a design; its homonym seal [si:l] possessing the same sound form denotes a sea animal. Besides, if meaning were inherently connected with the sound form of linguistic unit, it would follow that a change of meaning. We know, however, that even considerable changes in the sound-form of a word in the course of its historical development do not necessarily affect its meaning. The sound form of the Old English word lufian [luvian] has undergone great changes, and has been 8 transformed into love [l ^ v], yet the meaning “hold dear, bear love”, etc has remained essentially unchanged. The criticism of the referential theories of meaning may be briefly summarized as follows: -Meaning, as understood in the referential approach, comprises the interrelation of linguistic signs with categories and phenomena outside the scope of language. As neither referents (i. e. actual things phenomena, etc.) nor concepts belong to language, the analysis of meaning is confined either to the study of the interrelation of the linguistic sign and referent or that of the linguistic sign and concept, all of which, properly speaking, is not the object of linguistic study. The functional approach treats the meaning as the relation of one word to another. By this approach the meaning can be studied only through context, through its relation to other word. We can observe this in the following examples: to take a tram (a taxi), to take off, to take care of, to take ill, to take degree, to take cold, to take it easy, to take on, to take five minutes, to take place, to take tea, to take a bath, to take notice, to take part in, to take a book, etc. Word meaning is studied by the branch of lexicology called semasiology. Among the word’s various characteristics meaning is the most important. There are different theories of the nature of meaning. Usually meaning is defined as the realization of a notion (or concept, in other terms) by means of a definite language system. It is usually said that a word denotes objects, qualities, actions, phenomena, or expresses corresponding notions. The complex relationships between referent (object, denoted by the word), notion (concept, thought) and word (symbol, sound-form) are traditionally represented by the following triangle: notion, word, referent. Word meaning is made up of various components which are usually described as types of meaning. The two main types of meaning are grammatical and lexical meanings. Grammatical meaning unites words into parts of speech. Such words as goes, stops, works have different lexical meanings, but are united by a 9 common grammatical meaning: they are characterized by a common system of forms in which their grammatical categories are expressed. Lexical meaning is individual for every word: grammatically identical words have individual lexical meanings (f/e: went, kissed, and looked), which are common for all forms of one and the same word. Go, went, going – all these forms denote the process of movement. Lexical meaning includes two components: denotation and connotation. Denotational component is present in every word and makes communication possible. It expresses the notional content of the word, shows what the word refers to. Connotational component expresses additional meanings of the word which may be of different types: stylistic, evaluative and emotional, etc. Evaluative connotation expresses positive or negative attitude to the object or phenomenon denoted by the word. It may be rational and emotional. In the latter case we speak of emotive-evaluative connotation. The words brain (“a clever man”), for example, is evaluated as positive, while the word brock (“a scoundrel”), to cheat – have negative connotations. Cf. also: notorious – celebrated. Emotional or emotive connotation of the word is its capacity to evoke and express emotion (duckling, darling (diminutive emotive value)). Stylistic connotation shows the stylistic status of a word: neutral, bookish, colloquial, slang, etc. It should be noted that connotation is not an obligatory component of word meaning. Many words, for instance, give, take, walk, book, table, etc., used in their direct meaning, denote but not connote anything. A connection between the direct meaning of the word and its figurative meanings is called semantic motivation. It is based on the co-existence of different meanings of the word. Knowing the meaning of the word chain (“a series of usually metal links or rings”), one may guess the meaning of such units as chain store, chain hotel, chain smoker, etc. In such cases we deal with a metaphorical extension of the central meaning of the word. The majority of English words have more than one meaning, so they are poly semantic. 10 Words that are used most often have the greatest number of meanings: do, go, see, etc. Various meanings of the word represent lexico-semantical variants and constitute its semantic structure. One of the meanings in the semantic structure of the word is primary, the others are secondary. For example, the word table has the primary meaning “a piece of furniture” and a number of secondary meanings: “a supply of food”, “an act of assembling to eat”, “a group of people assembled a t a table”, etc. Meanings can also be direct and figurative, concrete and abstract, central and peripheral, general and special. There are two main types of the organization of the semantic structure of a poly semantic word: the radial and the chain one. Various meanings of a word are united by the existence of a common semantic component, even though they are different in their denotation and sometimes also connotation meanings. In the course of historical development word meanings undergo various changes. Lexicology investigates causes of semantic changes, the nature of semantic change and the results of semantic change. The causes of semantic change are traditionally divided into historical, or extra linguistic, and linguistic. Extra linguistic causes are connected with changes in the life of the nation, its industry, culture, science which bring about changes in word meaning. The word mill can be taken as an example: when the first factories appeared there was no other word to denote them, so the word mill developed a new meaning – “to’qimachilik fabrikasi”, “po’lat zavodi”, etc. Linguistic causes of semantic change are factors acting within the language system. One of these factors is the differentiation of synonyms which is connected with borrowing. For example, the Old English word deer meant “any animal”; when beast was borrowed from French, it ousted word deer in thus meaning and deer began to denote a concrete species. Then the Latin animal ousted [au] beast in the meaning “any animal” and the word beast now has the meaning “mammal” . Other linguistic causes are ellipsis [li] (in a phrase made up of two words one of these is omitted and 11 its meaning is transferred to its partner: daily newspaper daily and analogy (when one of the synonyms develops a new meaning, other synonyms acquire a new meaning too: e.g. when catch developed the meaning “understand”, its synonyms grasp, get developed this meaning too) 4 . All cases of change of meaning are based on some association. The process of change of meaning is termed transference. There are two types of transference: 1) transference based on similarity and 2) transference based on contiguity (real connection between the two objects). The first type of transference is called linguistic metaphor: neck (of a human being) → neck (of a bottle). The second type is known as linguistic metonymy: hands (“limbs of a human body”) → hands (“a worker”). Semantic change may result in the change of the range of meaning. In the process of vocabulary development some words develop narrower or broader meanings than those they used to have. The first process is called narrowing (specialization) of meaning. Thus, Old English fugol (“any bird”) came to denote a domestic bird (fowl [au] ), the word girl meant “a child of either sex”, but gradually developed the meaning “a female child”. The second process is termed widening (generalization) of meaning. The word ready (Old English ræde) originally meant “prepared for a ride”, picture meant “something painted”, the word uncle meant “mother’s brother”, etc. Semantic change also results in the change of the connotation structure of the word. The thing denoted by a word may acquire certain positive or negative characteristics, which are reflected first in the denotation then in the connotation component of word meaning. The process when the object to which the word refers acquires negative characteristics, and the meaning develops a negative evaluative connotation, is termed degradation of meaning. The old English word cnafa (Modern English knave) meant “a boy”, then a “boy servant” and finally– “a swindler, a scoundrel”. The Modern English word boor originally meant “peasant”. So, the words acquired a negative connotation. The development of a positive evaluative connotation is called elevation(amelioration) of meaning. 4 А. О. Долгова Лексикология Минск 2013 P -12-15. 12 1.2. Lexical meaning of verbs and their semantic structure The meaning of a word is a changeable category. The causes of semantic change may be either linguistic or extra-linguistic. Extra-linguistic causes are different changes in the life of the people speaking the language, the coming into existence of new notions and objects, changes in economic-social life, changes of ideas, etc. This chapter deals with the semantic structure of the verbs which are met frequently that is used both in its figurate and contextual meaning. First of all, we should define the types of lexical meaning. Many stylistic devices are based on using lexical meaning of word. Words can have various meanings. Scientists do not have exact approach to this problem; some of them say that the meaning is the relation between the object or notion named and the name itself (F. D Saussure). Working on the meanings of the word, we come across the concept of semantic structure of the word. The meaning of the word may be realized by its structure. By semantic structure we understand word's denotation, connotation meanings, and its emotive charge and so on. We know that words can be poly semantic. There are following meanings of the word: abstract, concrete, main or primary, secondary, central, peripheral, extended, general and particular 5 . We know that, there are general and universal meanings of the language. These general meanings are given in similar ways in different languages, besides; it includes cultural characteristics of given languages. The lexical meaning of a word is the realization of a notion by means of a definite language system. A word is a language unit, while a notion is a unit of thinking. A notion cannot exist without a word expressing it in the language, but there are words which do not express any notion but have a lexical meaning. Interjections express emotions but not notions, but they have lexical meanings, e.g. 5 I.V. Arnold "The Enslish word" Moscow. Vish. Shkl. 1973. 13 Alas! /disappointment/, Oh , my buttons! /surprise/ etc. There are also words which express, notions and emotions, e.g. girlie, a pig /when used metaphorically/. The definitions of lexical meaning given by various authors, though different in detail, agree in the basic principle: they all point out that lexical meaning is the realization of concept or emotion by means of a definite language system. The term «notion» was introduced into lexicology from logics. A notion denotes the reflection in the mind of real objects and phenomena in their relations. Notions, as a rule, are international, especially with the nations of the same cultural level. Grouping of meanings in the semantic structure of a word is determined by the whole system of every language. E.g. the English verb «go» and its Russian equivalent «bormoq» have some meanings which coincide: to move from place to place, to extend /the road goes to London/, to work /Is your watch going?/. On the other hand, they have different meanings: in Uzbek we say:»Mana u keldi» , in English we use the verb «come» in this case. In English we use the verb «go» in the combinations: «to go by bus», «to go by train» etc. In Uzbek in these cases we use the verb «ketmoq». The number of meanings does not correspond to the number of words, neither does the number of notions. Their distribution in relation to words is peculiar in every language. The Uzbek has two words for the English «man»: « erkak kishi» and «odam». In English, however, «man» cannot be applied to a female person. We say in Uzbek: «U (ayol) yaxshi odam». In English we use the word «person»/ She is a good person»/. Development of lexical meanings in any language is influenced by the whole network of ties and relations between words and other aspects of the language 6 Theory and practice of modern structural linguistics deals with the degrees of languages from the point of isomorphemic principles. So, we can say that there are differences and similarities of meanings in different languages. 6 Э . М . Дубенец , к . ф . н ., доц . Ex, the old meaning of the verb “to starve” was “to die” and it was often used in the word “to starve” is result of the shortening of the group, “to starve” of hunger. The appearance of a new word, which is synonymous to the word already existing in the language, may cause a change in the meaning of word. Ex, the old meaning of the word “deer” was an animal. It was used for all kinds of animals. When the Latin word “animal” came into English language the meaning of the word was changed. Now it is used to name only one kind of animal. (deer- ohu). Some scholars mistakenly use the term “transference of meaning” which is a serious mistake. It is very important to note that in any case of semantic change it is not the meaning but the word that is being transferred from one referent onto another (e. g. from a horse-drawn vehicle onto a railway car). The result of such transference is the appearance of a new meaning. Two types of transference are distinguishable depending on the two types of logical associations under the semantic process: Transference based on Resemblance (Similarity) and transference based on contiguity. Here we study linguistic metaphor and linguistic metonymy. The first type is the appearance of a new meaning on the base of likening of two objects and the association is based on subtle psychological links between different objects and a phenomenon is called metonymy. Sometimes metonymy is traced and identified with much difficulty. The two objects may be associated together because they often appear in common situations, and so the image of one is easily accompanied by the image of the other; or they may be associated on the principle of cause and effect, of common function, of some material an object which is made of it, etc. Let me consider some cases of transference based on contiguity. You will notice that they are of different kinds. The adjective “dull” developed its meaning “not clear or bright” (as in dull green color; dull light, dull shapes) on the bases of the former meaning “deficient in eyesight”, and its meaning “deficient in hearing”. The association here was obviously that of cause and effect; to a person with weak eyesight all colors appear pale, and all shapes blurred; to a person with deficient 15 hearing all sounds are indistinct. Transference is metaphor. Metaphor is based on the similarities of objects. Ex, the word “warm” and “cold” may be used to denote the certain qualities of human voices because of some kind of similarity between these qualities and warm and cold temperature. Ex, warm voice, warm temperature Cold voice, cold temperature 1. The similarity of form. The eye of a needle, a head of a pin. 2. Similarity of function. Ex, the head of the state, the head of the demonstration. 3. The similarity of position. Ex, the foot of the mountain, a foot of the page, the top of the table, the leg of the table. All auxiliary verbs are cases of generalization of their lexical meaning, because they developed a grammatical meaning: “have”, “be”, “do”, “shall”, “will” when used as auxiliary verbs are devoid of their lexical meaning which they have when used as notional verbs or modal verbs, e. g. cf. “I have several books by this writer” and “I have read some books by this author”. In the first sentence the verb “have “ has the meaning “possess”, in the second sentence it has no lexical meaning, its grammatical meaning is to form Present Perfect. By analyzing changes in the form of the verbs in the source language and comparing them into target language demands deep knowledge from the translator. We should also pay attention to the forms, tenses, aspects, voice of the verbs and actuality of the choice of the frequent verbs. For example, in Uzbek “sado kelmoq” equals to “xabar kelmoq” cannot be translated as “come to response” word by word. 1.3. Frequent verbs Frequency n 16 The number of occurrences of a linguistic item in a text or corpus. Different linguistic items have different frequencies of occurrence in speech and writing. In English, function words (e.g. a, the, to, etc.) occur more frequently than verbs, nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. Word frequency counts are used to select vocabulary for language teaching, in lexicography, in the study of literary style in stylistics, and in text linguistics. The twenty most frequently occurring words in a corpus of over one million words in a study of written American English by Kucera and Francis were: the, of, and, to, a, in, that, is, was, he, for, it, with, as, his, on, be, at, by, I. 7 The same is true of the different meanings of one and the same word. Analyzing the function of a word in linguistic contexts and comparing these contexts, we conclude that; meanings are different (or the same) and this fact can be proved by an objective investigation of linguistic data. For example we can observe the difference of the meanings of the word take if we examine its functions in different linguistic contexts, take the tram (the taxi, the cab,, etc.) as opposed to take to somebody. It follows that in the functional approach (1) semantic investigation is confined to the analysis of the difference or sameness of meaning; (2) meaning is understood essentially as the function of the use of linguistic units. As a matter of fact, this line of semantic investigation is the primary concern, implied or expressed, of all structural linguists 8 . The English Language is full of words. In fact, Oxford dictionary   lists approximately 250,000 separate English words and their most recent dictionary included more than 170,000 entries. The problem is deciding which words are useful and which words are not. Another way to say this is that not all 170,000 words found in the dictionary are used commonly. This makes learning new vocabulary very difficult. How can someone decide if a word is common or not, useful or not? Well, one of the ways to do this is to start by learning and using what are generally considered the most common words found in English. These components are usually described as types of meaning. The two main types of meaning that are readily observed are the grammatical and the lexical meanings to be found in words and word-forms. In modern linguistic science it is commonly held that some elements of grammatical meaning can be identified by the position of the linguistic unit in relation to other linguistic units, i.e. by its distribution. Word forms speaks, reads, writes have one and the same grammatical meaning as they can all be found in identical distribution, e.g. only after the pronouns he, she, it and before adverbs like well, badly, to-day, etc. It follows that a certain component of the meaning of a word is described when you identify it as a part of speech, since different parts of speech are distributional different (cf. my work and I work). Comparing word-forms of one and the same word we observe that besides grammatical meaning, there is another component of meaning to be found in them. Unlike the grammatical meaning this component is identical in all the forms of the word. Thus, e.g. the word-forms go, goes, went, going, gone possess different grammatical meanings of tense, person and so on, but in each of these forms we find one and the same semantic component denoting the process of movement. This is the lexical meaning of the word which may be described as the component of meaning proper to the word as a linguistic unit, i.e. recurrent in all the forms of this word. All members of a major word-class share a distinguishing semantic component which though very abstract may be viewed as the lexical component of part-of-speech meaning. A verb is understood to possess sets of forms expressing, e.g., tense meaning (worked — 9 Oxford English Dictionary 19 works), mood meaning (work! — (I) work), etc. In verbs the lexical meaning usually comes to the fore although in some of them, the verb to be, e.g., the grammatical meaning of a linking element prevails (cf. he works as a teacher and he is a teacher). The verb «to take» does not coincide in the number of meanings with its corresponding word « олмоқ ». For example, to take an exam — imtihon topshirmoq; to take tea – choy ichmoq; to take off —yechinmoq; to give an examination- imtihon olmoq; to have a rest-dam olmoq; to photograph- rasm olmoq. In the semantic structure of the Uzbek word there may be a definite figurative meaning which its corresponding English word doesn't possess. For example, Bu voqea menga katta maktab bo’ldi- This event was a good lesson to me (not «this event was a good school to me»). The norm of lexical valance of a word in English is not the same as in Uzbek. For example, in Uzbek the verb «ko’tarmoq» may be combined with the nouns «qo’l» and «stul». However, its corresponding English verb «to raise» can be combined with the noun «hand» («to raise hands but not «to raise chair» (to lift chair). The number of English synonymic sets may be substituted by one word in Uzbek. For example, the verbs «accept», «admit», «adopt», «take», «receive» correspond to the meanings of the Uzbek word «qabul qilmoq». In English to the Uzbek word «rassom» corresponds three words. They are: painter, artist, and drawer. In Uzbek 6 words are used to express the notion «blow» (urish, zarba, zarb, urilish, taqillatish, tepish). In English more than 20 words denote this notion. They are: blow, smack, slap, whack, poke, dig, rap, knock, stroke etc. The correlated words «to make» and «qilmoq» have different lexical valances. E.g. to make soup —sho’rva qilmoq (pishirmoq), to make tea —choy damlamoq, to make a table — stol yasamoq, dars qilmoq — to do lessons, to ring up – telefon qilmoq, to wish- niyat qilmoq, to try-harakat qilmoq and etc 10 . 10 R.S Ginzburg and others. A Course in Modern English Lexicology. –M., 1978 P-13-15. 20 Some semantic changes may be accounted for by the influence of a peculiar factor usually referred to as linguistic analogy. It was found out, e.g., that if one of the members of a synonymic set acquires a new meaning other members of this set change their meanings too. It was observed, e.g., that all English adverbs which acquired the meaning ‘rapidly’ (in a certain period of time — before 1300) always develop the meaning ‘immediately’, similarly verbs synonymous with catch, e.g. grasp, get, etc., by semantic extension acquired another meaning — ‘to understand’. We can observe restriction and specialization of meaning in the case of the verb to glide (OE. glidan) which had the meaning ‘to move gently and smoothly’ and has now acquired a restricted and specialized meaning ‘to fly with no engine’ (cf. a glider). There are given types of verbs which obtained by conversion. This is the most productive area in which conversion manifests itself. Very many English verbs have been obtained by conversion, from nouns especially. a)   Verbs obtained from nouns The semantic relationships between the nouns and their converted verbal counterparts are very diverse and, therefore, quite difficult to classify. Consequently the patterns of meaning which can be identified form a rather non- homogenous class:  action resulting in the situation designated by the noun: to rain, to snow, to frost;  action generating the notion designated by the noun: to point, to spot, to drop, to stripe;  instrumental meaning: to finger, to elbow, to shoulder, to saw, to hammer, to screw, to gun, to nail;  agentive meaning (to be/to act like what the nouns designates): to wolf, to ape, to monkey, to parrot, to pig, to nurse, to father;  locative meaning: to pocket, to corner, to garage;  to put in what the noun designates: to bottle, to catalogue, to list; 21  to deprive of what the noun designates: to peel, to skin, to scalp;  to send/go by what the noun designates: to mail, to ship;  to provide with what the noun designates: to cover, to wrap, to plaster, to coat. b) Verbs obtained from adjectives The basic meaning of the de-adjectival verbs is “to bring about the characteristic expressed by the adjective in an object”: to calm, to dirty, to square, to round, to alert, to aggregate, or “to make a subject suffer the instatement of the quality expressed by the adjective: to wrong, to dry, to wet, to sour, to clean. c) Verbs obtained from adverbs, conjunctions, interjections Verbs obtained from adverbs, conjunctions or interjections are pretty rare in English. Nevertheless, verbs such as to forward, to but (“But me no buts!”), to chirp, to squeal, to hum, to meow are present in the language. Chapter II. Translation problems of frequent verbs 2.1. Application of translation principles in the process of translation 22 The central problem of translating has always been whether to translate literally or freely. The argument has been going on since at least the first century В . С . Up to the beginning of the XIX c., many writers favored some kind of «free» translation: the spirit, not the letter, the sense not the words, the message rather than the form, the matter riot the manner. This was the often revolutionary slogan of writers who wanted the truth to be read and understood - Tyndale and Dalet were burned at the stake, Wycliffe s works were banned. Then at the turn of the XIX c., when the study of cultural anthropology suggested that the linguistic barriers were insuperable and that language was entirely and that language was entirely the product of culture, the view that translation was impossible gained some currency and with it that, if attempted at all, it must be as literal as possible. This view culminated in the statements of the extreme «literalists» W. Benjamin and V. Nabokov. In the Renaissance period, translators made an effort to summarize their rules and recommendations for a good translation. One of the first writers to formulate a theory of translation was the French humanist Etienne Dolet (1509- 46), who was tried and executed for heresy after “mistranslating” one of Plato’s dialogues. In 1540 Dolet published five translation principles, “How to Translate Well from One Language into Another”: (1) The translator must fully understand the sense and meaning of the original author, although he is at liberty to clarify obscurities. (2) The translator should have a perfect knowledge of both source language and target language. (3) The translator should avoid word-for-word renderings. (4) The translator should use forms of speech in common use. (5) The translator should choose and order words appropriately to produce the correct tone. It is evident that Dolet’s principles stress the importance of understanding the source text as a primary requisite 11 . 11 Zoya Proshina “Theory of translation” 3rd edition, revised Vladivostok Far Eastern University Press 2008, P-247 23 The argument was theoretical, the purpose of the translation, the nature of the readership, the type of text, was not discussed. Too often, writer, translator, and reader were implicit identified with each other. Now the context has changed, but the basic problem remains. Here it is put in the form of a flattened V diagram: Source language emphases Target language emphases Word for word translation Adaptation Literal translation free translation Faithful translation idiomatic translation Semantic translation communicative translation Word for word translation. This is often demonstrated as interlinear translation with the target language immediately below the source language words. The word-order is preserved and the words translated by their most common meanings, out of context. Cultural words are translated literally. The main use of word for word translation is either to understand the mechanics of the source language or to construe a difficult text as a pre-translation process. Literal translation. The source language grammatical constructions are converted to their nearest target language equivalents but the lexical words are again translated singly, out of context. As a pre-translation process, this indicates the problems to be solved. Faithful translation . A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original within the constraints of the target language grammatical structures. It «transfers» cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical and lexical «abnormality» (deviation from source language norms) in the translation. It attempts to be completely faithful to the intentions and the text-realization of the source language writer. 24 Semantic translation . Semantic translation differs from «faithful translation» only in as far as it must take more account of the aesthetic value (that is, the beautiful and natural sound) of the source language text, compromising on «meaning» where appropriate so that no assonance, word-play or repetition jars in the finished version. Further, it may translate less important cultural words by culturally neutral third or functional terms but not by cultural equivalents and it may make other small concessions to the readership. The distinction between «faithful» and «semantic» translation is that, the first is uncompromising and dogmatic, while the second is more flexible, admits the creative exception to 100 % fidelity and allows for the translator's inductive empathy with the original. The choice of a suitable equivalent will always depend not only on the linguistic system or systems being handled by the translator, but also on the way both the writer of the source text and the producer of the target text, that is the translator, choose to manipulate the linguistic systems in question; on the expectations, background knowledge and prejudices of readers within a specific temporal and spatial location; on translators’ own understanding of their task, including their assessment of what is appropriate in a given situation; and on a range of restrictions that may operate in a given environment at a given point in time, including censorship and various types of intervention by parties other than the translator, author and reader. The aim of professional translation is to acquaint the render with the original work of fiction; educational translation as a linguistic subject at the special institute and at school is one of the methods of more conscious and profound study of the foreign language by the way of showing up in the English text lexical, grammar and stylistic peculiarities of the English language. The translation is considered to be faithful when the content of the book, its stylistic peculiarities are rendered by the linguistic means of the native language. It means that very often we have to use such linguistic categories of the native 25 language, which formally don't, coincide with those of the English language but have the same emotional and psychological effect on the English reader. The process of educational translation presents 4 stages: 1. First of all the text should be thoroughly understood. It mums that the student should be acquainted with (the whole book, should have some knowledge of (the history of literature and mode of life of the people from whose language the translation is being done. 2. The student should realize the stylistic functions of lexical and grammar and phonetic phenomena which are used to express the content of the text. 3. Then the work on the choice of corresponding means of expression in the native language should be done. 4. The last stage is a work on the English or Uzbek text. The choice of the word is one of the most difficult problems of translation which is closely connected with the following problems. 1. The logical meaning of the word. Any grammatical phenomena or stylistic- peculiarities do not always coincide with those of the foreign language as well as the meaning of the separate words which are lexical equivalents. The main meaning of the English word "table" coincides with that of the Uzbek language. But the English “Table” has one additional meaning: "ovqat" "imorat, xona" means while in English we have the special words to express the idea:"board room and board". At same time English "table" has the additional meaning to «jadval» Table stol board Jadval ovqat room and board 2. Independent and connected meaning of the word. The logical meaning of the word may be both independent and connected with other words. The Hitler can be understood in the given combination of words. A color bar – rangli (yorqin bo’yalgan) to’siq was seen in the distance. There exists a color bar in the South Africa. 26 3. The meaning of the word and its use. The meaning of the word shouldn't be mixed with its use. Sometimes even a word can be combined with a lot of words and is rendered in Uzbek by different words: A young man - yosh odam A young child - yosh bola Young in a crime - tajribasiz jinoyatchi The night is young - qorong’u kirdi Department of justice - adolat boshqarmasi Ministry of defense - mudofaa vazirligi Board of trade - savdo vazirligi Admiralty - dengiz xarbiy kuchlar vazirligi The First Lord of Admiralty - harbiy dengiz kuchlar vazirligi Chancellor - moliya vaziri War office - harbiy qism A bad headache - qattiq bosh og’riq A bad mistake - qo’pol xato A bad weather - yomon ob-havo A bad debt - qaytarilmagan qarz A bad accident - baxtsiz hodisa A bad wound - og’ir yara 4. Context. The word in the sentence may acquire so-called contextual meaning. It may be not constant, as a rule we can't find the contextual meaning of the word in tin dictionary. Bill it always has something in common with the 27 main meaning of the word, "In the atomic war common and children will be first hostage. 1 ' It’s a great difficulty to find out the contextual meaning of the word as the dictionary only gives hints how to search for the necessary word in our native town language. The majority of the words are known to be polisemantic and the context becomes especially important while translating polisemantic words as translating in different languages is quite different. 5. Synonyms. Besides finding the exact meaning of the word the students should be able to choose the necessary word from corresponding number of synonyms in the native language. -'"She was brave about it." "Brave" means «jasur, mehribon, saxiy, kelishgan» sentence and other words can b е used in translating the given sentence and other words should be given preference too: "muhim, kerakli", "mard". The English language is very rich in synonyms. Synonymous pairs are very characteristic of the English language. They are more emblematic. The week and humble Jewo 12 . 6. Motive meaning of the word. A lot of words may acquire emotive meaning and the same word in different sentences may be rendered by different words. - China is a large country (davlat) - We are ready to die for our country (yurt, mamlakat) While translating one should take into consideration on that in different languages the words which are lexical equivalents mat arouse quite different associations. 12 P. Abrahams "The Path of Thunder" page 80 28 For Uzbek «qish» means snow and frost, for Englishmen - fog and cold wind. For Englishmen "peahen" has nothing in common with these associations. That's why it's quite coned to translate the sentence as follows: -"She poses proudly before him / to pose – qaddini tik tutib turmoq/. 7. The dictionary. While translating one should remember he may use the words not included in the dictionary because it's impossible to include in the dictionary all the correct meanings of the word, which it may acquire in the context. "He was developing grammatical nerves'' – Unda gramatik nervlar paydo bo’layotgandi. We can find a lot of meanings of the word "nerves" «nervlar, kuch, mardlik, sovuqqonlik, jahldor, qo’pol». The student are to make out that thoughts, reflections should be translated not by separate words. So it's quite possible and natural either to introduce some words and even: - I light my candle at the watchman's/ Dickens/ - Men qorovulnikida shamni yoqaman. 8. The translation of international words. Those words which have similar form and meaning in different languages are called international words. Some of them completely coincide in their meaning /such as football, diplomacy, artillery/ some of them partially. They may be different in their stylistic coloring e.g. "businessman", "cosmopolitan'' are neutral in English while in Russian they have negative meaning. Some of them have entirely different meaning: Compositor - bastakor Conductor - dirijor, chipta sotuvchi These words are called ps е udointer national words: 29 jiddiy- dramatic Pathetic - 1) ta’sirli 2) siyosiy fan va texnologiya - science and technology 9. Translation of neologisms. The English language is very rich in neologisms - the word has been created recently and perhaps will not live in the language for a long time. It is very seldom that we find equivalent for the translation of neologisms and for the most part we use descriptive translation and word-for-word translation people of good will, top level talks 13 . A model, like all models, is an attempt at a description rather than an explanation . An explanation is a theory . A theory may he defined as 'a statement of a general principle, based upon reasoned argument and supported by evidence, (hat is intended to explain a particular (act, event, or phenomenon', "i.e. while a model answers the question what? The theory answers the question why? Given the ambiguity of the word “translation”, we can envisage three possible theories depending on (the focus of I he investigation; the process or the product. These would be: 1. A theory of translation as process (i.e. a theory of translating). This would require a study of information processing and, within (hat, such topics as (a) perception, (b) memory and (c) the encoding and decoding of messages, and would draw heavily on psychology and on psycholinguistics. 2. A theory of translation i\s product (I.e. a theory of translated texts). This would require a study of lexis not merely by means of the traditional levels of linguistic analysis (syntax and semantics) but also making use of stylistics and recent advances in text-linguistics and discourse analysis. 3 . A theory of translation as both process and product (i.e. a theory of translating and translation). This would require the integrated study of both and such a general theory is, presumably, (be long-term goal for translation studies. For 13 Catford, J. C. «A linguistic theory of translation».1965; P-45 30 the moment at lest we are after a theory of translating and, given that there is considerable agreement on the characteristics, which a theory should possess, we can state what our ideal theory should look like. One of the essential problems of translation which translators come across is translating equivalent-lacking words or culture-bound words. Equivalent-lacking words include, along with culture-bound words, neologisms, i.e. newly coined forms, dialect words, slang, taboo-words, foreign (third language) terms, proper names, misspellings, archaisms, etc. From the applied linguistic point of view, translation theory can be criticized for having limited its activities to the level of technique (the language teaching equivalent of classroom activities) or, at best, to that of method (in language teaching terms, the equivalent of global collections of techniques; audio-visual method, direct method, etc.), when what is needed is a principled approach from which the rest would flow. Lexical problems of translation Due to the semantic features of language the meaning of words; their usage, ability to combine with other words, associations awakened by them the place they hold in the lexical system of a language do not concur for the most part. All the same "ideas" expressed by words coincide in most cases, though the means of expression differ. A s i t i s i m p o s s i b l e e m b r a c e a l l t h e c a s e o f s e m a n t i c differences between two Ianguage5 we shall restrict this course to the most typical features. From the point of view of typology each category & each sight has 2 main aspects the form & the content, letter, sound form. Forms differ but meanings not ex: брат -brother. The principal types of lexical correspondences between two languages are as follows: 1. Complete correspondences (famous geographical names, proper names, names of months, the day of week) 2. Partial correspondences when the 31 word in one language has two or more equivalents 3. The absence of correspondences (no equivalents) I. Complete lexical correspondences . Complete correspondence of lexical units of two languages can rarely be found. As a rule their belong to the following lexical groups; 1. Proper names and geographical denominations. 2. Scientific and technical terms (with the exceptions of terminological polygamy) 3. The month and days of the week, numerals. II. Partial lexical correspondence. While translating the lexical units partial correspondences mostly occur. That happens when a word in the language of the original confirms to several equivalents in the language it is translated into the reasons of these facts are the following. 1. M os t w or d s i n a l an gu ag e ar e p ol ys em an t i c an d t h e s ys t e m of wor d m e an i n g i n on e l a ng ua ge do es no t co nc ur w i t h t he sa m e system in another language /does not/ completely (compare the nouns "house" and "table" in English, Uzbek and Russian). That's why the selection of a word in the process of translating is determined by the context. 2. The specification of synonymous order which pertain the selection of words. However, it is necessary to allow for the nature of the semantic signs which in order of synonyms is based on. Consequently, it is advisable to account for the concurring m eani ng of m em ber s of synonym s or der s, t he dif f er ence i n lexical and stylistic meanings and the ability of individual components of orders of synonyms to combine: e x: dismiss, discharge (bookish), sack , fire (colloquial); the edge of the table the rim of the moon ; ishdan bo’shatmoq (adabiy tilda); haydamoq (og’zaki nutqda), stolning cheti (qirrasi); oyning qirrasi (cheti). 32 3. Each word affect s t he m eani ng of an obj ect it designates. Not infrequently languages "select" to describe the same denotations. The way, each language creates its own "picture of t he wor d", i s known as "var i ous pr i nci pl es of di vi di ng real i t y into parts". Despite the difference of signs, both languages r efl ect one and the same phenom enon adequately and to t he extent, which must be taken into account when translating words. Of this kind, as equivalence is not identical to having the same meaning. E x: Hot milk with skin on it – qaymoq tutgan issiq sut; 4. The difference of semantic content of the equivalent words in two languages. These words can be divided into three sub groups; a.)Words with differentiated (undifferentiated) meaning: Ex: In English: In Uzbek: to swim suzmoq odamlar haqida to sail suzmoq kema haqida to float suzmoq predmet haqida b.) Words with a "broad sense: verbs of state (to be), perception and brainwork (to see, to understand), verbs of action and speech (to go, to say), partially desemantisized words (thing, case). c.) "Adverbial verbs" with a composite structure, which have a semantic content, expressing action and nature at the same time: Ex: Poyezd hushtak chalib stansiyadan jo’nab ketdi- The train whistled out of the station. 5. Most difficulties are encountered when translating the so called pseudo- international words; words which are similar in form in the both languages, but differ in meaning or use. The regular correspondences of such words in spelling and sometimes in articulation (in compliance with the regularities of 33 each language), coupled with the structure of word building in both languages may lead to a false identification: Ex: in English: moment in Uzbek lahza 6. Each language has its own typical rules of combinability. The latter is limited by the system of the language. A language has generally established traditional combinations which do not concur with corresponding ones in another language. Adjectives offer considerable difficulties in the process of translation that is explained adjectives to combine. It does not always coincide with their combinability in the Uzbek and English languages on account of differences in their semantic structure and valence. Frequently one and the same adjective in English combines with a number of noun, whiles in Uzbek and English different adjectives are used in combinat ions of this kind. For t hi s reason i t i s not easy to translate English adjectives which are more capable of combining than their Uzbek and Russian equivalents. (A bad headache, a bad mistake – Qattiq bosh og’rig’i, qo’pol xato). A specific feature of the combinability of English nouns is that so m e of t h em c an f un ct i o n as t h e su bj ec t of a se nt en ce , indicating one who acts; though they do not belong to a lexical- semantic category Nomina Agents. This tends to the "predicate - adverbial modifier" construction being replaced by that of the "subject - predicate". • The strike closed most of the schools in New York. • Ish tashlash natijasida Nyu-Yorkdagi maktablarning ko’pchiligi yopildi. Of no less significance is the habitual use of a word, which is bound up with the history of the language and the formation and development of its lexical system. This gave shape to c l i c h é s p e c u l i a r 1 0 e a c h l a n g u a g e , w h i c h a r e u s e d f o r describing particular situation. Ex: In English; Wet point! 34 In Uzbek; Ehtiyot bo’ling, bo’yalgan! In order to attain equivalence, despite the difference in formal and semantic systems of two languages, the translator is obligated to do various linguistic transformations. Their aims are: to ensure that the text imports all the knowledge inferred in the original text, without violating the rules of the language it is translated into. The following three elementary types are deemed most suitable for describing all kinds of lexical transformations: 1. lexical substitutions ; 2. supplementation ; 3. omissions ; 1. Lexical substitutions. In substitutions of lexical units words and stable word combinations are replaced by others which are not their equivalents. More often three cases are met with: a.) concrete definition - replaced a word with a board sense by one of a narr ower m eani ng; E x: He i s at school – U m akt abda o’ qi ydi . He is in, the army – U armiyada xizmat qiladi. b.) gener al izat ion - r epl acing a wor d with a narr ow m eani ng by one with a broader sense; a wool-blanket- jun adyol с .) an integral transformation. Ex: How do you do! - Salom! Lexical substitutions can be used to have proper impact upon the receptor. For example, the main character of Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” is called Scout. This name would call specific associations with a English reader. To avoid confusion, the translator substituted the girl’s name by conveying her main feature to notice everything. 35 Antonymous translation is a complex lexical-grammatical substi tuti on of posit ive constr ucti on for a negat ive one (head one versa) which is coupled with replacement of word by its antonym when translated. Ex: Keep off grass – Maysa ustida yurmang! Compensation is used when certain elements in the original t e x t c a n n o t b e e x p r e s s e d i n t e r m s o f t h e l a n g u a g e i t i s translated into. In cases of this kind the same information is communicated by other means or another place so as to make up the semantic deficiency. Ex: he was ashamed of his parents . . . . , b e c a u s e t h e y s a i d " h e d o n ' t " a n d " s h e d o n ' t " . . . - U o ’ z o t a - o n a s i d a n u y a l ar d i , c h u n k i u l a r s o ’ z l a r n i t o’ g ’ r i t a l a f f u z q i l a r di l a r . 2. Supplementation. A formal inexpressibility of semantic components is the reason most met with for using supplementation as a way of lexical transformations. A formal inexpressibility of certain semantic components is especially of English word combinations N + N and adj + N ; Ex: Pay claim – Ish haqini oshirishni talabi. Logical computer – Logik kompyuter In the process of logical transformations of omission generally words with a surplus meaning are omitted. Ex: (components of typically English pair- synonyms, possessive pronounce and exact measures) in order to give a more concrete expressions. To raise one's eyebrows – qoshlarini chimirmoq (hayratlanish ma’nosida) Absence of lexical correspondences. Realer are words do nothing objects, phenomena and so on, which are typical of a people. In order to render correctly the designation of objects referred to in the original and image associated with them it is necessary to know the tenor of life epoch and specific features of the country depicted in the original work. The following groups of words can be regarded as having no equivalents; 36 1. Relayed of everyday life words denoting objects, phenomena etc. which typical of a people (cab, fire - place). 2. proper names and geographical denominations; 3. address and greetings; 4.the titles of journals, magazines and newspapers; 5. weights, linear measures etc.: Which dealing with realer it is necessary to take spatial account of the pragmatic aspect of the translation, because the "knowledge gained by experience" of the participants of the communicative act turn out to be different. As a result, much of which is easily understood by an Englishman is in comprehensible to an Uzbek or English readers or exerts the opposite influence upon them. It is particularly important to allow for the pragmatic factor when translating fiction, foreign political propaganda material and advertisements of articles for export. Be l o w a r e t hr e e pr i n ci pa l wa ys of t r a ns l a t i ng wo r d s d en ot i n g specific realer. Many English phraseological units have no phraseological conformities in Uzbek and English. In the first instance this concerns phraseological units based on realize. When translating units of this kind it is advisable to use the following types of translation: a) verbatim word for word translation. b) translation by analogy c) descriptive translation A verbatim translation is possible when the way of thinking does not bear a specific national feature. For e.g., the arms race, it is a phraseme, the translation is qurollanish poygasi. Translating by analogy, this way of translating is resorted to when the phraseological unit has a specific national realia. For e.g.: to pull somebody's leg, it is an idiom, and the translation is mazah qilmoq. Descriptive translation i.e. translating phraseological units by a free combination of words is possible when the phraseological unit has a particular 37 national feature and has no analogue in the language it is to be translated into. For e.g.: to enter the House, it is a phraseme the translation is Parlament a’zosi bo’lmoq. So, according to above given theories on translation the translation task is 1. to find the correct meaning to this or that form. 2. to find an appropriate form in the Target language for this expression of t h e sa m e m ea ni ng . On t h e w ho l e t hi s c ho i c e of g r a m m at i c al equivalent in the Target language determined by the following factors: 1. The meaning inherent in the grammatical form itself Ex: lives lived 2. The lexical character of the word or word group used in this or that form. Ex: thus the use of the plural from in Uzbek is impossible with certain nous while possible with others. Ex: workers of all industries other philosophies 3. Factors of style Ex: both English and Uzbek have the passive form of the verb. However, in Uzbek the use of this form is mainly confined to the literary or bookish style. Ex: At the station John was met by his brother. In newspaper reports this is quite acceptable Ex: At the station the delegation was net by director. 4. Fr equency of use. Replacement of parts of speech; this transformation is especially typical as to replacement of English nouns derived from the verbs and denoting actions Ex: It's our hope that....— 38 Ex: The abandonment by Irene of glittering he had given her. The same is also true of the so called nomina—aentis (it's represented in English by suffix «—er») Ex: He is an early- riser John is a sound-sleeper Fairly often English adjectives may be replaced by English & Uzbek nouns. Ex: Australian property English comparative forms of adjectives such as higher, lower, longer, shorter, better are frequently replaced by Uzbek nouns derived from adjective stems which in their turn verbalized. Ex: They demand higher wages & better living conditions. They come to the replacement of sentence elements. This is sometimes in referred as the static restructuring of the sentence. Ex: English subject is replaced by corresponding secondary elements (object, modifiers) Ex: He was met by his sister. He was given money. T he new film is much spoken about . Last week saw the 500 meeting the shop standard & trade union officials. 5. Replacement of sentence type; the replacement of the simple sentence by a complex one. Thus white translating from English it often becomes necessary to render English structure with nonfinite verbal forms by means of subordinate clause. Ex: I want you to speak English I heard my mother go out & close the door. 2.2. The use of componential analysis in translation 39 The term “componential analysis” was first used by W.Goodenough. (“Componential Analysis and the Study of Meaning”, Language, 1956, 32, 1) and F. Lansbury (“A Semantic Analysis of the Pawnee Kinship Usage”, Language, 1956, 32, 1).Words have meanings and the smallest units of meaning are called sememes or components of meaning. The word “woman” has the following components of meaning “human”, “female”, and “adult” 14 . Human: girl female Woman: female young adult The component “young” distinguishes the word “girl” from “woman”. Human girl female boy male young Here the component “male” distinguishes the word “boy” from “girl”. Componential analysis deals with meanings. Different meanings of polysemantic words have different componential structure. E.g. the comparison of two meanings of the word “boy”. Human; human 1. a male child male 2. a male servant male Young up to the any age age 17 or 18 Each part of speech has a distinguishing semantic feature. Nouns have the component “substantiality” or “thing” adjectives have “quality” and so on. The semantic features of words may be classified into markers and distinguishers. The semantic components of the verb “to smoke” such as “age”, “human” can be found when it is combined with certain nouns denoting these components. The “female” or “male” component of the meaning of the noun “baby” can be observed through the co-occurrence of it with the possessive pronouns “his” or “her”. The baby drank his milk The baby drank her milk. The 4 componential analyses are widely used in modern linguistics 15 . 14 Palmer , F , R . Semantics .Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 15 Nida E. Componential Analysis of Meaning. The Hague, 1975). 40 Componential analysis of meaning   –   linguistic analysis of the semantic structure of a word (a monosemantic word or a lexico-semantic variant of a polysemantic unit) as constituted by a set of minimal elements of sense – semes. Is linguistic analysis of the semantic structure of a word? It can be a monosemantic word or lexico-semantic variant of polysemantic word. The meaning of any word can be represented in a form of a structure, semantic components of the words’ meaning form a hierarchy. Is an investigation of the structural organization & interrelations of the semantic components of the words’ meaning? Lexical meaning is a complicated dynamic whole & its constituency is semes. A seme is a minimal unit of sense, an atom of lexical semantics distinguished on the basis of oppositions by method of componential analysis. A seme is not expressed in a word in any material unit but it’s revealed & singled out through interrelations of the word with other words on a paradigmatic and syntagmatic levels. The semantic structure of a word can be represented graphically: Father equals  human - seme  Adult - seme  Male - seme  Parent - seme human, adult, male, parent   - they are semes! 1) Componential analysis is very popular in linguistics; it shows heterogeneity, complexity of lexical meaning. 2) Componential analysis helps to differentiate between words (especially between synonyms) the difference between small and little lies in the presence of an additional seme (pleasant, nice) in the word “little” → not absolute synonyms. 41 3) Componential analysis helps to explain semantic derivation (metaphor, metonymy, etc.) 4) Componential analysis to create the so called language of semantic primitives – minimal units of sense. Seme (same as Sememe, Semantic component)   –   minimal unit of sense, an 'atom' of lexical semantics, distinguished on the basis of oppositions by methods applied in componential analysis. The words in different languages have their own semantic components. Comparing the English verb “to go”, and Uzbek “bormoq”, “yurmoq” we can see that in the English the way of movement is not shown. But in Uzbek verbs bormoq and yurmoq this component is shown in them. We see here the hidden component of meaning. The hidden component of meaning is a component which can be revealed through the collectability of words. It is impossible to say in Uzbek “piyoda bormoq”. R. S. Ginsburg says that the hidden component of meaning of words is the linguistic property of the word. It can be found with the help of co- occurrence analysis. To study the hidden components of words is very important for language teaching. The Immediate Constituents (I. C.) Analysis attempts to determine the ways in which the units are related to one another. This method is based on a binary principle. In each stage of the procedure we have two components. At each stage these two components are broken into two smaller meaningful elements. The analysis is ended when we arrive at the constituents which are not divided further. These constituents are called “the ultimate constituents”. The aim of the I. C. analysis is to segment a set of lexical units into two independent constituents. The meaning of the sentence, word group and the I. C. segmentation are interdependent. E.g. A fat teacher’s wife may mean that either the teacher is fat or his wife is fat. 42 A fat teacher’s wife - means that the teacher is fat. A fat/ teacher’s wife - means that his wife is fat. A beautiful/ woman doctor - means that the doctor is a beautiful woman. A beautiful woman/ doctor means that the doctor who treats woman is beautiful. This analysis is widely used in lexicological investigations and in the study of derivational structure of words and morphemic analysis of words. E.g. denationalize (not to give a national right) may be first segmented into. de/ nationalize because the morpheme “de -” can be found in a number of other words: such as: deform, denature, denominate. The remaining part “nationalize” can be broken into national/ ize because “-“ize” can be found in such words as “organize”, “humanize”, “recognize”, “standardize”. National - into nation/ -al as - “al” occurs in a number of words: occupational, musical, critical. So, we have found de/ nation/ al/ ize - 4 ultimate constituents. “Friendliness” is divided into friendly/ -ness (friendly-looking) because “-ness” can be found in such words as happiness, kindness, darkness, beautifulness etc. We draw schemes of the morphemic analysis according to the I. C. method: unreasonable denationalize friendliness un +reasonable; de + nationalize; friendly+ness; reason+ able; natoinal+ize; nation +al This is the morphemic analysis friend +ly+ness according to the I. C. method. It should be pointed out that this method is very useful to find out the derivational structure of words too. E.g. “denationalize” has both a prefix “de -” and the suffix “-ize”. In order to know whether this word is a prefixed or a suffixed derivative we use the I. C. analysis. We cannot divide this word into denational /ize, because there is no word “denational” or “denation”. The only possible way of division is de/nationalize because there is the word “nationalize”. Therefore we may say that this word is a prefixed derivative. I. C. is also useful to define the compound words and derivational compound words. 43 E.g. snow - covered can’t be divided into snow+cover+ed but snow + covered. So it is a compound word because there is no “snow - cover” in the dictionary. Distributional analysis. This method is widely used in lexicological analysis. Distribution is the occurrence of words relatively two other words. It is the position which words occupy or may occur in the text. The words have different lexical meanings in different distributional patterns. In different distributional structures the word “ill” has different meaning: ill look, ill luck, ill health - yomon, fall ill, be ill -kasal. A different pattern of arrangement of the same morphemes changes the whole into the meaningless. If we have different distribution we have different meanings! E.g. to get to London, to get angry, to get rid of; to take care of, to take off, to take in, take on, take place, take a taxi, take tea. As was said above, different distribution of components of compound words may change the meaning of the word. E.g. bird-cage and cage-bird, fruit-market, market-fruit, life-boat, boat-life. So the meaning of the word depends on its distribution. It should be pointed out that the meaning of the word is dependent on what class of words it is combined with. Thus nouns may be subdivided into animate and inanimate, human or non-human, concrete or abstract, beings or ex. E.g. if we use after the verb “move” the nouns denoting inanimate objects (move+ inanimate noun) it has the meaning: siljitmoq (ex. He moved a table). But when it is followed by the noun denoting animate human being (Move+animate noun) it has another meaning: He moved a man “u odamni uyg’otdi”. The meaning of words is also different if they are combined with different lexico- semantic groups. I can generalize that ideas by comparing the meaning of the verb to move in the pattern to move+noun: 1. cause to change position (e.g. move the chair, the piano, etc.), 2. arouse, work on the feelings of smb. (e.g. to move smb. deeply). In the cases of this type distributional analysis traditionally understood as the analysis on the level of different parts of speech, as 44 an abstraction on the syntagmatic level is of little help in the analysis of sameness or difference of lexical meaning. By lexico-semantic group we understand the group of words joined together by a common concept or the words which have a common semantic component. E.g. verbs denoting sense perception: to think, to imagine, to write, or adjectives denoting color: red, black, yellow etc. E.g. blind + any noun denoting a living being, animate ojiz (ko’r) without the power to see: a blind man, a blind woman, blind cat. Blind+noun denoting inanimate objects or abstract concept may have different meanings depending on the lexico- semantic group of the noun, it belongs to. So it has the meaning “beparvo” (thoughtless) when it is combined with nouns denoting emotions. E.g. blind love, blind fury. With nouns denoting written or typed signs it has the meaning “hard to see”, e.g. blind handwriting, blind type. Distributional analysis is widely used in word formation. The analysis of the derivational pattern noun+ish-adj. shows that the suffix-“ish” is never combined with noun stems denoting time, space. It is impossible to say hourish, mileish. Many adjectives in - “ish” are formed noun stems denoting living beings, e.g. wolfish, boyish, girlish. So the distribution may be viewed as the place of words in relation to other words on the level of semantic classes and sub-classes. The distributional meanings by co-occurrence may be extra-linguistic or linguistic components of meaning. Good doctor - who treats well Good mother - who takes care of her children well. Here the meaning of the adjective “good” is different and it is the extra- linguistic factors that account for the difference in meaning. The linguistic components of distributional meaning can be found when we compare correlated words in different languages. E.g. In English the verb “to seize” may be combined with nouns denoting different kinds of emotions (I was seized with joy, grief, etc.) but in Uzbek we may say – menda ikkilanish paydo bo’ldi; but the collocations – umid, xursandchilik xujum qilmoq are impossible, so the Uzbek verb cannot be combined with 45 nouns denoting pleasurable emotions. It must be said that the different semantic peculiarities of the word may be found in the distributional analysis. The verb “to giggle” refers to a type of laughter. It means “to laugh in a nervous manner” but the analysis showed that “to giggle” is often connected with the laugh of a woman (women giggle) man may giggle drunkenly or nervously but not happily or politely. The sentences to be completed were of the type: The man— with obvious pleasure, the woman — with obvious pleasure, etc. The informants were to fill in the blanks with either the verb to laugh or to giggle and were presented with a choice of subjects male and female. A clear preference was shown for women giggling and men laughing with obvious pleasure. The analysis of the informants’ responses also showed that a man may giggle drunkenly or nervously, but not happily or politely. In the case of women, however, of whom giggling is more characteristic it appears that all collocations — giggle drunkenly, nervously, happily, politely— are equally acceptable. It may be inferred from the above that the meaning by co-occurrence is an inherent part and an essential component of the word-meaning 16 . Different words make different patterns. E.g. to feel one’s way, to feel bad, to feel tired, to feel for something. What is a pattern? A pattern is combination of a word, a symbolic representation of the class of words with which it may be combined. E.g. see a boy, see a place, see a book. On the bases of these words we can draw a pattern see+noun. This is called a distributional formula. The distributional formula is a symbolic representation. ex. -make+ (a) +noun - make a coat, a machine -make+ (the) +noun+verb - make the machine go -make+ (adjective) - make sure -make+ (a) + adjective + noun- make a good wife. Translation analysis of frequent verbs I don't think there is an English word that can't be translated into any other language, but specific examples for specific languages abound. You can't say that you "miss" something in Japanese for example. I would guess that there are lots of slang words in particular that don't quite carry the same flavor or meaning of the English original. Sam, Higashine- Japan Translators usually have to deal with six different problematic areas in their work, whether they are   translating technical documents   or a   sworn statement . These include: lexical-semantic problems;   grammar ;   syntax , rhetoric ; and   pragmatic   and   cultural problems . Not to mention administrative issues, computer-related problems and stress… Lexical-semantic problems can be resolved by consulting dictionaries, glossaries, terminology banks and experts. These problems include terminology alternatives, neologisms, semantic gaps, contextual synonyms and antonyms (these affect polysemic units: synonyms and antonyms are only aimed at an acceptance which depends on the context to determine which meaning is correct), semantic contiguity (a consistency procedure which works by identifying semantic features common   to two or more terms) and lexical networks. Grammatical problems include, for example, questions of temporality, aspectuality (the appearance indicates how the process is represented or the state expressed by the verb from the point of view of its development, as opposed to time itself), pronouns, and whether to make explicit the subject pronoun or not. Syntactical problems may originate in syntactic parallels, the direction of the passive voice, the focus (the point of view from which a story is organized), or even rhetorical figures of speech, such as a hyperbaton (the inversion of the natural 47 order of speech) or an anaphora (repetition of a word or segment at the beginning of a line or a phrase). Rhetorical problems are related to the identification and recreation of figures of thought (comparison, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, oxymoron, paradox, etc.) and diction. Pragmatic problems arise with the difference in the formal and informal modes of address using “you”, as well as idiomatic phrases, sayings, irony, humor and sarcasm. These difficulties can also include other challenges; for example, in the translation of a marketing text from English into Uzbek, specifically with the translation of the personal pronoun “you”. The translator must decide whether the formal or the informal “you” is more appropriate, a decision which is not always clear. Cultural issues may arise from differences between cultural references, such as names of food, festivals and cultural connotations, in general.   The translator will use language localization to correctly adapt the translation to the culture targeted.   A very simple example is a financial translation which includes dates. If the text is in English, it is most likely, but not absolutely certain. “Probably all of them. The dictionary may give us approximate translations of words, but we must interpret these according to our own experience. The word "hill", for example, is easy to translate, but according to the country in which we are brought up our mental picture of a hill will vary. One of the things that first struck me on arriving in Japan was that it would be possible to stand with one foot on the hill and the other on the plain, a feat which would be impossible on the undulating hills of Britain, where one cannot tell where the hill begins. The mental image of a "hill", therefore, is quite different for a British or a Japanese person, or even for an American, where translation is not required. All words and expressions have cultural and behavioral connotations which cannot be transferred to another language without explanation. Consider, for example, the simple act of having a "bath". The Westerner gets into a long, fairly shallow tub, soaps himself vigorously, and then lets the water run away. The Japanese soaps and rinses 48 himself thoroughly outside his squarish and deep tub, and when he is quite clean gets into the hot water to soak there at leisure. Ideally, for maximum enjoyment, the water should overflow when he gets in. When he has finished, he leaves the water for the next person. The cultural norms of bath-taking then produce a psychological dimension: the Japanese person, thinking of the Westerner sitting among his soapsuds, thinks "Ugh! - how dirty!" while the Westerner, thinking of having to get into water that someone else has already used, thinks in turn "Ugh! - how dirty!" While we agree that they are both washing the entire body, rather than just the hands and face, can one say that the Westerner and the Japanese are really performing the same act? A Japanese child would not have reacted as I did when I first heard about Archimedes, who discovered his famous Principle when his bath overflowed as he stepped in to it. Instead of admiring his genius, I thought, appalled, "Whatever did his wife have to say about the mess in the bathroom!" When our interpretation of a concrete object or a daily routine can vary so widely, how much more scope there is for misunderstanding when we discuss abstract ideas!” - Lucy, Marbella Spain. Writers sometimes use an incorrect tense or don't know how to use the past participle forms of irregular verbs. Using verb tenses imprecisely or inconsistently can also distract a reader and block communication. Recognize time sequences in your writing and choose verb tenses that logically reflect that sequence. Sometimes the choice of a verb tense affects your meaning. Kelsey   worked   at the library for a year. As the previous sentence shows, the past tense indicates a completed action. Kelsey no longer works at the library. Kelsey   has worked   at the library for a year. Here, the present perfect tense indicates that a past action is continuing in the present. Kelsey is still working at the library. Kelsey   had worked   at the library for a year. 49 In this sentence, the past perfect tense indicates that something else happened after Kelsey's year at the library. For example, Kelsey   had worked   at the library for a year when she was asked to take over technology development. Learn to use the perfect tenses when they are appropriate to your meaning. Don't limit yourself to the simple past tense when writing about past action. In the following sentences, a perfect tense should have been used to establish a clear time sequence. The car wash   stood   where the sandwich shop   was . (no) All the things you   told   me, I   heard   before. (no) In the first sentence, since the sandwich shop was in the location before the car wash—they can't occupy the same space at the same time—past perfect should be used for the second verb. The car wash   stood   where the sandwich shop   had been . The logic of the second sentence dictates that   heard   should be in the past perfect tense. The word   before   is an obvious clue that the hearing took place before the telling, even though both actions were completed in the past. All the things you   told   me, I   had heard   before. Faulty   if   clauses The past perfect tense should also be used in a subjunctive past tense “ if   clause.” If she   had thought   of it, she would have called you. A common error is to use the conditional   would have   or   could have   in both clauses.   Would have   and   could have   should be used   only   in the clause that states the consequences. If I   had wanted   to, I   would have   made cookies. Not:   If I   would have wanted   to, I   would have   made cookies. If we   had brought   matches, we   could have   made a bonfire. Not:   If we   would have brought   matches, we   could have   made a bonfire. Inconsistency in tenses 50 Another common error is illogically mixing tenses in a sentence or in a piece of writing. Choose the verb tense you want to use in your sentence or in your essay. Then make sure that all verbs are consistent, either by being in the same tense or by reflecting past and future times in relation to your main tense. Roberto   went   into the market,   walks   over to the produce section, and   picks   through the tomatoes.   (inconsistent tenses) In the preceding sentence there is no logical reason to move from the past tense ( went ) to the present tense ( walks, picks ). Use the past tense or the present tense— not both. Rewrite the sentence using consistent tenses. Roberto   went   into the market,   walked   over to the produce section, and   picked   through the tomatoes.   (consistent tenses) Look at the verb tenses in this group of sentences. This new program   will pay   its own way. It   specified   that anyone who   wanted   to use the service   has to   pay   a fee. People who   refused to do so   won't   receive the benefits. (inconsistent tenses) Notice that the changes in tense between sentences are not related to a clear time sequence. A rewritten version of this piece shows a more consistent, logical use of tenses. This new program   will pay   its own way. It   specifies   that anyone who   wants   to use the service   has to pay a fee. People who   refuse to do so   won't   receive the benefits. (Consistent tenses) In this version, all verb tenses except the first ( will pay ) and last ( won't receive = will not receive ) are in the present tense. The future tense is correctly used for the first and last verbs because these verbs indicate future consequences. Irregular verbs. Even when you understand the correct uses of verb tenses, you can run into trouble with irregular verbs. Irregular verbs form the past tense and past participle in a variety of ways (as shown in Table 1), not by adding   -d   or   - ed   as regular verbs do. Table 1. The table of regular and irregular verbs 51 Present: Talk, joke say, bite Past: Talked, joked said, bit Past participle: Have talked, have joked have said, have bitten Irregular verbs cause errors because people aren't sure about the correct past and past participle forms. Which is it: “I   drunk   the beer” or “I   drank   the beer”? In   the given work, we   studied the translation problems of   short stories of   O.   Henry from English into Uzbek. The collection of   stories by   O.   Henry was translated form English into Uzbek by   Q.   Yusupova. The object of   our research is   the story “The Ransom of   Red Chief”, which is   translated from Russian by   H.   Teshaboev. Ransom- an   amount of   money that is   paid to   free someone who is   held as   a   prisoner:   the kidnappers were demanding a   ransom ; 2.   to   pay an   amount of   money so   that someone who is   being held as   a   prisoner is   set free:   They were all ransomed and returned unharmed . So   translation issues of verbs became the object of   the given paper. At the same time frequent verbs, the role and meaning of phrasal verbs are essential in the process of translation. The term   phrasal verb   is   commonly applied to   two or   three distinct but related constructions in   English: a verb and a particle and/or a preposition co-occur forming a   single semantic unit. This semantic unit cannot be   understood based upon the meanings of   the individual parts in   isolation, but rather it   can be   taken as   a   whole. In   other words, the meaning is   non-compositional and thus unpredictable. Phrasal verbs that include a   preposition are known as   prepositional verbs   and phrasal verbs that include a   particle are also known as   particle verbs . Additional alternative terms for   phrasal verb   are compound verb,   verb-adverb combination ,   verb-particle construction ,   two-part word/verb , and   three-part word/verb   (depending on   the number of   particles), and multi-word verb. 52 The analyses of   translation of verbs used in   the story showed that, some phrasal verbs don`t correspond with the one in   original text. For example,   to   pull off   —   olmoq . Ex. Bill and me   had a   joint capital of   about six hudred dollars, and we   needed just two thousand dollars more   to   pull off   a   fraudulent town-lot scheme in   Western Illinois with.[3.P.13]   — O’sha paytda Bill bilan birga jamg’arib kelayotgan pulimiz olti yuz dollarcha bo’lib, harbiy Illinoysdayer-suv oldi-sotdisi bilan bog’liq “ishbilarmonligimiz” ni   boshlab yuborish uchun   naq ikki ming dollar yetmay turgandi [2, P. 223]. To   talk sth over- ...ni muhokama qilmoq.   Ex. We   talked it   over on   the front steps of   the hotel [3, P.13]   — Mehmonxona oldida o’tirib, bu   haqda   obdon gaplashdik [   2, P. 223 ]. The aspect of   these types of   phrasal verbs that unifies them under the single banner   phrasal verb   is   the fact that their meaning cannot be   understood based upon the meaning of   their parts taken in   isolation. When one picks on   someone, one is   not selecting that person for something, but rather one is   harassing them. In   analyzed story we   faced it   very often, so   Uzbek translation of   some phrasal verbs draw our attention:   To   stir up-qo’zg’amoq: Ex. Philoprogenitiveness, says   we, is   strong in   semi-rural communities therefore, and other reasons, a   kidnapping project ought to   do   better there than in   the radius of   newspapers that   send   reporters   out   in   plain clothes   to   stir up   talk about such things [3, P.13]. Yarim qishloq joylarning odamlari bolajon bo’ladi, shuning uchun, yana boshqa sabablarga ko’ra odam o’g’irlash rejamizni aynan shu yerda amalga oshirish osonroq bo’ladi, degan qarorga keldik. Boshqa joyda qilsak, gazetchilar e’tiborini tortardik va   ular buni darrov   shov-shuv qilib   har tomonga ayg’oqchi muxbirlarini   jo’natishardi   [ 2, P.   223-224]. One of   properties of   the fiction, it   from other products of   a   book word, its semantic capacity is   distinguishing. It   is   shown in   ability of   the writer to   tell more, than speaks direct sense of   words in   their set, in   its skill to   force to   work both ideas, and feelings, and imagination of   the reader. The semantic capacity 53 of   a   literary work is   shown or   in   forms of   realistic typification, or   in   allegorical meaning, or   in   the general diversity of   art speech. While analyzing translation materials we   observe semantic changes in   translation: To   melt down- erimoq:   Ex. Bill and I   figured that Ebenezer would   melt down   for a   ransom of   two thousand dollars to   a   cent. [3, Р .15]   — Bill bilan xom cho’timizga ko’ra, Ebenezer o’g’li uchun bizga oz   emas, ko’p emas, naqd ikki ming dollarni shu zahoti   qurtdek sanab berardi. [   2, Б . 224 ]. Translating verbs and appropriating its synonyms to the target language verb meaning requires also stylistic knowledge. In the above given example melt down is used by its positive meaning, but in Uzbek variation “qurtdek sanab bermoq” may seems negative meaning. To   put up- tan bermoq:   Ex. That boy   put up   a   fight like a   welter-weight cinnamon bear ; but, at   last, we   got him down in   the bottom of   the buggy and drove away[ 3, P.18]- Bola emas, balo ekan . Mitti ayiqdek biz bilan rosa olishdi , lekin oxir-oqibat uni bir amallab arava tubiga tiqishtirdik-da, u   yerdan jo’nab qoldik [2, P. 225]. In this example we meet Uzbek proverb “bola emas balo ekan”, but the translator prefers using “to put up” and by choosing this combination “put up a fight like a welter-weight cinnamon bear” he constitutes stylistic appropriate translation. One more characteristic feature of   fiction is   a   strongly pronounced national painting of   the maintenance and the form. It   is   important as   well close communication between historical conditions and images of   product reflecting   it. On   all these features, characteristic for fiction, also the individual manner of   the writer comes to   light. The analyzed phrasal verbs contain national coloring:   To   camp out   — lagerga chiqmoq. Ex. I   never   camped out   before...[3, P.22]   —Hech qachon   o’rmonda yashamagandim ...[2, P. 226]. 54 To   pick up-termoq, olmoq: To   pick up   something or   somebody (or   pick   something or   somebody   up ) is   to   lift something or   somebody by   using your hands. Ex. Every few minutes he   would remember that he   was a   pesky redskin and   pick up   his stick rifle and tiptoe to   the mouth of   the cave to   rubber for the scouts of   the hated paleface [ 3, P.23-24]   — Bolakay har besh daqiqada qizil tanli ekanini eslab qolar, o’zi qurol deb aytayotgan tayoqni   qo’liga olib , oyoq uchida g’or og’ziga biqsinib borar, jirkanch kelgindilarning ayg’oqchilarini poylardi [2, Pp.   226-227]. To   spread down- yoymoq, tarqatmoq:   Ex. We   spread down   some wide lankets and quilts and put Red Chief between   us. [3, P.25]- Jun va   qavima choyshablarni yerga   to’shab , o’rtasiga Qizil tanlilar Sardorini yotqizdik, o’zimiz esa ikki chetiga yonboshladik. [2, P. 227] To   fix up- aniqlamoq, tuzmoq: Ex.   But we   have got to   fix up   some plan about the ransom. [3, P.35]-Lekin tovon masalasida qandaydir reja   o’ylab topishimiz kerak   [2, P. 230]. To   knock out-hushidan ketkazmoq, hushsiz qilmoq, yengmoq:   Ex. Just then we   heard a   kind of   war-whoop, such as   David might have emitted when he   knocked out   the champion Goliath. [3, P.36-37]   — Shu payt vahimali jangovor na’rani eshitdik. Axilles Gektorni   jangga chorlaganda , xuddi shunga o’xshash na’ra tortgandirov [2, P. 230]. To send smb to smb- aytib yubormoq. Ex: If I meet him, I shall send him to you.- Agar yo’lda ko’rinib qolsa shohim, albatta, aytib yuboraman. In this sentence the verb “send” is used as the meaning “report, inform”. To find smth- ko’rinmoq. Ex: If I find it at the market, I shall bring it for you 18 .- agar u bozorda ko’rinsa, yanagi kelishimda men ham olib kelaman. In this example if a translator use the verb “see” instead of “find” it would be incorrect 18 “O’zbek xalq ertaklari” Xusan Sodiqov (collector and painter)-T.:Sharq, 2009, P-102 55 translation. Besides in the above given example in Uzbek the meaning of the tense of the verb is in the future form, but in translation into English the form of the verb is in the present simple form. The verb to roar by itself denotes making a long and loud noise and is equal to na’ra tortmoq, o’kirmoq. In the sentence Tanks roared into the city, the verb indicates not only producing a loud noise, but also moving. So the sentence corresponds to the Uzbek Tanklar shaharga shovqin solib bormoqda edi. The seme of movement is easily recognized by the preposition into. The same role is performed by a postpositional element of a phrasal verb 19 . The examples of verbs used in   the story showed they are not adequate with the one ones in   the original. The meaning of   equivalents practically does not depend on   the context, so   to   translate them literary one should merely look them up   in   a   dictionary. The demand to   consult dictionaries is   essential. No   guesswork is   allowed in   translation. However, proper combination of   these means makes it   possible to   translate any literary text rendering all the necessary information. When choosing the means of   translating it   is   also important to   keep in   view stylistic characteristics of   the text itself and of   different words in   both the languages. It   is   much more difficult to   translate those words of   source language, which are characterized by   partial correspondence to   the words of   target language. Such words are mostly polysemantic. That is   why in   order to   translate them correctly it   is   necessary first of   all to   state which particular meaning of   such a   word is   realized in   the utterance. The most reliable indicator in   this case is   the context in   which the word is   used. Conclusion 19 Швейцер А. Д. Перевод и лингвистика. – М.: Воениздат, 1973. – С.126. 56 In this qualification paper we’ve analyzed meaning of frequent verbs and their problems in the process of translation by analyzing the works of O. Henry and other fiction books. Translation unifies two different language speech acts in one communicative situation. It can be defined as a special type of communication intended to convey information between the participants speaking two different languages. Translation does not exist outside of society. It appeared in society when communities began to trade and exchange ideas. At the same time, translation helps the world community develop. Translation could not have developed without culture. Literature, science, and philosophy influence translators’ conceptualizations. On the other hand, culture could not have developed without translation, since translations enrich nations with the cultural values of other nations. So, Uzbek and English people and their culture, language structure and vocabulary system are different. Translation reflects the source text but it does not copy it. To translate adequately, a translator must do his or her best to find a proper means of expression. A translator bears in mind that the receptor has a cultural background other than that of a receptor of the original text; therefore, s/he has to be very resourceful in producing the same impact upon the receptor as that of the source text. Special problems arise in translating dialects, foreign speech, puns, poetry, etc. And a translator is in constant search for new tools to solve translation problems. In this qualification paper we have tried to find and analyze such problems of frequent verbs in translation. Having written this qualification paper we’re come to the following conclusion: 1. The linguistic science at present is not able to put forward a definition of meaning of meaning which is conclusive. However, there are certain facts of which we can be reasonably sure, and one of them is that the very function of the word as a unit of communication is made possible by its possessing a meaning. 2. The choice of a suitable equivalent will always depend not only on the linguistic system or systems being handled by the translator, but also on the way 57 both the writer of the source text and the producer of the target text, that is the translator, choose to manipulate the linguistic systems in question. 3. The number of meanings does not correspond to the number of words; neither does the number of notions. Their distribution in relation to words is peculiar in every language. 4. Componential analysis helps to differentiate between words (especially between synonyms) the difference between small and little lies in the presence of an additional seme (pleasant, nice) in the word “little” → not absolute synonyms. 5. Cultural issues may arise from differences between cultural references, such as names of food, festivals and cultural connotations, in general.   The translator will use language localization to correctly adapt the translation to the culture targeted.   6. Equivalent-lacking words signify notions lacking in the target language and culture. The term of culture-bound word is of narrower meaning than the term of equivalent-lacking word. A culture-bound word names an object peculiar to this or that ethnic culture. In addition to the priority of the work, there is a serious side to verbs. It is a work about how the translator comes across problems with verbs in translation, adequateness of words in both of cultures and ambiguity in translation. In conclusion, we worked on different linguistic literature on meaning, lexical meaning of verbs and their semantic structure, translation problems of frequent verbs by using componential and translation analyses.
