Simply putting students in pairs or groups is not sufficient for improving comprehension. The type of discussion is very important, and there must be structures in place to stimulate discussion. Simple structures, such as numbered heads and think ‐ pair ‐ share, enhance student participation and accountability and are easily incorporated into the sequence of instruction. There are many other ideas for structures teachers can use to keep students engaged and motivated. Actuality of the work: Students consider the ideas of their peers and share their own idea off of it (develop or expand the idea). Students summarize the information shared by their peers (rephrase) and make comments on specific parts. Students raise inquiry about what their peers share. The teacher should practice modeling a good conversation and the “wrong way” to hold a conversation prior to having students engage in this activity. Aim of the work: The teacher creates a prompt that requires students to utilize their judgment and the content presented to take a position; this is recorded on the board so that students can refer to it as they fill in the boxes to the template. Students record their judgment and a rationale for what they believe in the first box. Students then pass their papers to the right, and read and add a supporting rationale that goes along with their peer’s judgment (even if they don’t agree). Students are then asked to pass their papers to the right, and read what is in both of their peers’ boxes and add something that might be used as an opposing rationale (whether they agree with the rationale or not). Students are then asked to pass their papers to the right and add their own opinion, supporting it with their rationale, in the final box. Students are asked to give the papers back to their original owners. Volunteers are called upon to share with the class some of the arguments for and against on their carousel forms. See Point of View Team Carousel below. Subject of the work: Successfully involving students in text discussion requires a classroom environment that is supportive and encouraging. Teachers must set guidelines for student behavior regarding differing viewpoints, active listening, and refraining from making negative comments.

Task of the work: Efferent discussions require an efferent stance which involves the process and goal of extracting information from text. As the manager of an efferent discussion, it is important that the classroom teacher refrain from competing with text as the source of information during the discussion. Teachers need to remember that the discussion belongs to the students because the work of extracting information from text requires their efforts. It is their learning opportunity. The teacher sets the tone and pattern for discussion by the role that he or she assumes; therefore, the role of the teacher is to remain neutral. Effective contributions that a teacher can make to create an efferent discussion include: • Leading students back to the text • Challenging students to support their position or claim about the text • Asking questions that guide students to question the text or their position/claim about the text Any comments or body language that teachers display to discourage students from relying on the text as their primary source of information during discussion will derail the text extraction process and goal of an efferent discussion. Teachers need to know specifically what types of things they can say or do to sustain an efferent discussion. Any of the following are appropriate: • Paraphrasing what they hear students say during discussion that may need clarification for the benefit of the listeners • Posing a question to the entire group to grapple with an issue that the group may not have yet considered during the course of their discussion • Pointing out some specific information from texts that are open to various interpretations, followed by a question such as, “What do you think the author was thinking when he/she wrote this?” Discussion protocols are helpful guidelines for students and teachers to use in the process of conducting discussions. Teachers need to keep in mind the following when determining guidelines for efferent discussions: • The expectation of the text

• The nature of the discussion • The type of interactivity required of the participants The teacher should use the Efferent Discussion Protocol to set expectations for students and use them to redirect conversation that strays from the guidelines. They may also be used to develop rubrics for evaluating student performance during these discussions. Chapter I. Teaching English as a Foreign Language Teaching English as a foreign language is a challenging, yet rewarding career choice. As an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, you must learn to

constantly adapt to your students' needs. Many times, this means dealing with a variety of problems in the classroom, many of which are all too common occurrences. A good ESL teacher must be able to recognize these common problems, and work to find solutions. Even a small tweak in your teaching methods can help to create a more productive and casual environment for both you and your students. The following will outline 10 of the most common classroom problems faced when teaching English as a foreign language, and just how to solve them. Common Classroom Problems 1. Students become overly dependent on the teacher. Many times, students will automatically look to the teacher for correct answers instead of trying themselves. If the teacher obliges them with the answer each time, it can become a detrimental problem. Instead, focus on giving positive encouragement. This will help to make students more comfortable and more willing to answer (even if incorrectly). 2. Persistent use of first-language When teaching English as a foreign language, this is possibly the most common problem. As an ESL teacher, it's important to encourage students to use English, and only English. However, if students begin conversing in their first language, move closer. Ask them direct questions like "do you have a question?" Another idea is to establish a set of class rules and develop a penalty system for when they use their first language. For example: if someone is caught using their first- language three times, have them recite a poem in front of the class (in English). Remember, for the 1-2 hours they are in English class, it must be English only. 3. Student is defiant, rowdy, or distracting of others. This will happen, no matter what, in every classroom. If the entire class is acting up, it may be the fault of the teacher, i.e. boring material or poor classroom

management. If it is one particular student, you should react swiftly to show dominance. In order to resolve the issue, an ESL teacher must be strict and institute discipline if needed. If it continues to happen, further disciplinary action through the school's director could be pursued. 4. Students "hijack lesson"—The lesson doesn't go where you want it to. When teaching English as a foreign language, you can always count on students hijacking a lesson. To some extent, this can be a good thing. It shows that students interest, and as long as they are participating and conversing in English, it is a productive experience. However, if the lesson strays too far off topic, in a direction you don't want it to go, it's important to correct the problem by diverting the conversation. 5. Personalities clash. Not everyone in an ESL classroom will become the best of friends. If drama arises between certain students, the easiest solution is to separate them from one another. Choose a juicy theme to the lesson; one that the students can relate to and one you know they will enjoy. This will automatically give them some motivation and interest. Get to know your pupils and identify their interests and needs, then design your course accordingly. 1.2 Strong student dominance As an ESL teacher, you will encounter learners with different capabilities and language skills. While it is good to have some students who excel in the classroom, it is important that they don't take away from others. If certain students begin to constantly "steal the show," take care. Focus on calling on weaker students in the class to answer questions. Encourage, but gently deflect some answers from the strong students and give production time to other not-so-strong members of the class. Students are unprepared. The last thing you want as an ESL teacher is for learners to drop out simply because they felt lost and/or unprepared. Concentrate on a more shared learning experience. Make sure students are all on the same page before moving onto a new topic by concept checking multiple times, and encouraging individual participation. Tardiness Even I have a hard time arriving places on time. But the truth is, tardiness is not only rude, it can be distracting and disruptive to other students. If tardiness becomes a problem for members of your class, make sure they are disciplined. Set rules about tardiness and penalties for breaking them. Chapter II The Goal of Teaching

This is the job of an ESL teacher first and foremost. In order to be a great ESL teacher, one must not only teach, but inspire and empower. The goal is to excite the students about learning, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending English. Stronger students may feel held back, weaker students may feel pressured. The teacher may feel stressed. The best solution to this is to have an open-class discussion about the classroom situation - to ensure the best for everyone it is better to acknowledge the situation and for everyone to agree how to deal with it. It is probably best to stage and structure the discussion. Needs Analysis Use a needs analysis to prompt the students to reflect upon their learning style, learning strategies, language needs, learning enjoyment, motivation, language strengths and weaknesses. Questions that might be included are... What kinds of class activities do you enjoy / benefit from? Which language skill do you most wish to develop? Do you prefer working individually or with a partner? Would you rather sit and listen to the teacher all lesson or participate in group work? Students compare their answers in pairs or small groups. You should collect the information and prepare a statistical representation of the key questions and answers. This will help to develop the sense of shared community in the class.

Explain and discuss Explain the mixed-level situation to the students and give a list of possible approaches to the teaching and learning. In pairs, the students rank the approaches/ ideas according to their suitability for the situation. Following feedback, you should highlight the strategies you plan to use. A student contract Developing with the students, or perhaps writing it yourself, a contract of behavior for activities is a useful device. 'I will help and support my activity partner.' 'I will participate in group work.' Tell them what you are going to do If you think your students are not mature enough to carry out this kind of reflection, explain the situation to the class and tell them what strategies you will be using. If students know what to expect, you can hope that they will cooperate. All of the above work could be done in the mother tongue, although I feel it is best done primarily in the target language (as it draws attention to the fact that this is a learning language issue.) Student self-awareness Encourage students to develop an awareness of their own language abilities and learning needs. What are their strengths and weaknesses, and how can they focus on these? How can they measure their own progress This may take the form of a learner's diary, regular self-assessment, keeping records of mistakes, keeping a record of things learnt. Work groupings Varying the way students work in the class will help meet the variety of levels in the class. Pair work You can pair strong with strong, weak with weak, or strong with weak. Perhaps in

a very controlled activity, the strong with weak will work well. In a freer activity, perhaps strong with strong will be of benefit. Variety in the pairings is the key here - and you should also be sensitive to the general relationships between different students, and learn to note who works well with whom. Group work These groups could be of mixed levels or similar ones. The hope is that in a smaller group, the weaker student will feel more able to contribute. Also, if the group is working with a set of information, divide the information between the students, forcing them to work together. You may consider dividing your class into groups by level for the whole lesson, enabling you to give a different level or number of tasks to each group. Discussion of this strategy with the class should help prevent stigmatisation. Whole class - mingles This is a favored strategy of mine. A mingle activity involves students talking or interacting with many different members of the class in a short period of time in order to achieve a task. This means that any one student will work with students at different levels - experiencing stronger and weaker levels of communication. This supports the weaker students and provides opportunities for the stronger ones. A classic activity is a 'Find someone who...' In this activity the student has to survey the class to find people who…(for example) …have got something - Do you have a CD player? Or… …have done something - Have you eaten fish and chips? Or… …like something - Do you like tennis? If a student answers yes to a question, then the other student should ask for more information. If a student answers no, then the other should find a new person to ask, and may come back to the first student with another question later on.

The potential for this is endless. It is a great way to provide practice of a particular language structure/area (10 questions all using the past simple) and provides controlled practice as well as the opportunity for further freer discussion. It also creates a lively classroom dynamic. Mingles can take many forms - students may have to find the person who has a matching word to theirs, or the second half of a split sentence. The students may all have the same or different questions, or a mixture. The key is the general principle of an information gap or communicative need. Overall, variety in the types of working groups, and an open discussion of the class situation will help to deal with some of the difficulties that are present in mixed ability classes. The importance in the classroom situation, to make the best possible environment for the weaker students: All three teachers thought a quiet and calm atmosphere was important. They all also believed that the teacher needs to use very clear instructions. It is not enough to just say something. The teacher needs to write on the board, repeat, walk around and make sure they know what to do. The female teacher added that the teacher must be very well prepared and know exactly what he/she is going to do, and always bring extra material. The teacher also has to encourage everyone. It is important to give positive feedback, comment on both content and language and give them advice on what they need to practice more, not just correct the mistakes. The special teacher also added that the students need to feel that they know what to do, how to do it and that they understand and do not feel stupid. It is important to enhance their self-confidence, so they are not afraid to ask questions. She also believed that it is very important how the teacher approaches them. The teacher may need to decrease the material to work with as well as give them time and offer extra help. Do you talk to your students, one at a time, about how they are doing in English and what they need to improve?

Again there was a difference between what the regular teachers said and what the special teacher said. The male and the female teacher said that they did so at least once each course, often once in the middle and another time at the end, after the national tests. Both wished they had more time to talk to the students. If a student has specific problems they usually talk with him/her earlier and may even contact the special teacher in English. The student can be given the offer to take an extended A course with the special teacher instead. The male teacher said that he tries to motivate them by encouraging them, boosting their self confidence, telling them not to compare themselves with others in the class. Both the male and the female teacher give the students advice on how to improve. The special teacher told me that she has these talks all the time. She always encourages each student, and if she is displeased she lets them know that too. She discusses what is hard for them and how they think she could help them, for example if they would like more individual help. She gives them tips all the time. It is a constant dialogue. What kind of special help in English does your school offer? At what point do you offer this to the student? All teachers told me that they offer the help of a special teacher in English and that they get this offer early. Every student does a test in English, Swedish and Maths when they start upper secondary school, and based on their results some students get the chance to go to a special teacher in English. There are two kinds of special help. The first one is just support in addition to the regular English classes, and the second one is an offer of special teaching in English only. The second one is offered if the student does not pass the A course. They are then given the opportunity to attend a prolonged A course with the special teacher instead. It has been shown that the students who get this extra help really appreciate it. The female teacher added that she thought the school should have more special teachers in English. It is necessary because now all students have to study English, and not all are motivated to do so. She believed that we need more resources

because the number of students needing extra help is increasing. But it is very important to talk to the student about it, show that we care and that they have to decide what is best for them.
