Language is social by nature; it is inseparably connected with the people who are its creators and users; it grows and develops together with the development of society 1 . The present qualification paper deals with the study of selecting and evaluating words in teaching vocabulary to ESP students by using the material of Scale up. The Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan PD-1875 as of 10 December 2012, “On Measures on Further Improvement of Teaching of Foreign Languages” 2 was the essence of the country’s reforms in the field of foreign language learning. Since the adoption of the system-generating decree all the work in this area has been intensified and major reforms in modernization of teaching foreign languages at all levels of continuous education have started. According to the targets set by the Government of the Republic, new State Educational Standards, based on international experience – CEFR were adopted. In 2013, on the initiative of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan the work on developing a set of learning materials for foreign languages meeting international requirements has been launched. A group of English language teachers from all over the Republic developed truly innovative language learning manual that meets newly established requirements. “Scale Up” is B2 level academic language course designed to meet the communication needs of Undergraduate, English for Specific Purposes students as well as independent academic learners in Uzbekistan. B2 level Course book consists of three courses to encourage undergraduate students for continuous learning and involve in academic life. 1 Karimov I. A. Ilmiy – tadqiqot faoliyatini takomillashtirish to’g’risida // “ X alq s u zi”, March 15, 2002 . 2 “ On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”, “Xalq suzi”, December 10, 2012. 21Rich selection of motivating and informative, authentic and semi-authentic texts to improve both reading and listening skills with variety topics are presented in themed topics. Interactive activities focus on learners’ «can do» statements and follow the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference requirements. Meaningful topics and materials are designed so that they enhance students’ horizons and provide a thought-provoking, purposeful approach to learn English, including autonomous learning. Actuality of the theme: Process of studying a foreign language promotes the formation of creative independence as there is a possibility of designing vocabulary tasks and exercises within the limits of the given subject which demands independent work from pupils. They are taught to use a language material for expression of their thoughts in a dialogical speech. Teaching English can and should provide the achievement of practical, educational and developing aims. Besides, the practical purpose the leading. The other purposes are reached in the course of mastering English in the conditions of pupils' active informative of power of apprehension and activity. Pedagogy, guiding and synthesizing these aspects, defines vision of a problem from its specific point of view. The aim of the work is to study the specific features of selecting materials for English for Specific Course and to analyze the available materials of “Scale up” in teaching vocabulary to ESP learners of Uzbekistan. The object of the theme: Selecting and evaluating of vocabulary for ESP learners by using the material of “Scale up” in the course of teaching a foreign language is the object of my qualification work. With respect to the different task performance modes, this study assumes that a learner-centered interactive learning environment can facilitate ESP learners’ vocabulary acquisition more effectively than a non-interactive mode. Numerous studies concerned with the benefits of peer-interaction have found extensive support for its positive effects. Practical value of work will arise the sincere interest of students and teachers to the problem of selecting and evaluating of vocabulary for ESP learners by using the material of “Scale up” in teaching and learning English. T his paper is 21determined by the fact that the developed material and proper tasks and exercises make available the use of this work as a manual in teaching a foreign language as a useful material for elective additional courses of foreign language at courses or tutors, lyceums and colleges or higher education system which are specialized in English. This study is on effective vocabulary teaching strategies employed by teachers in the English for Specific Purposes auditory, it is crucial to highlight the importance of specific vocabulary instruction in the English for Specific Purposes ESL classroom. The objectives are: - studying of methods and ways of designing vocabulary tasks for ESP learners on the material of “Scale up”; - teaching a foreign language which promotes the formation and development of intellectual abilities among learners; - raise the efficiency of teaching and educational process. Methods of the research: Given work is studying the scientific works connected with revealing its psychological aspects, approaches to a technique of designing vocabulary tasks for ESP students at higher education, criteria of an estimation of its efficiency etc. providing success of formation and development of the person's creative abilities. This study is on effective vocabulary teaching strategies employed by teachers in the English for Specific Purposes classroom, it is crucial to highlight the importance of specific vocabulary instruction in the English for specific Purposes ESL classroom. Methods of the research: - analysis and synthesis - visual aids methods - communicative approach method - lexical-semantically analysis method Methodological basis of investigation: Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Education”, “National Program of Training Cadres” Decree “On Measures to Further Improvement of Foreign Languages Teaching System”, and the 1 st President Islam Karimov’s works on education young generation, scientific and theoretic literature related to the theme. 21The novelty of the work is concluded in new materials of the linguists. Theoretically, foreign language education in Uzbekistan state higher education is an optional part of the curriculum. A foreign language is one of the main ways in the reaching the success. A few years ago foreign language education was dominated by the grammar translation method. In education reforms, there is a new designing vocabulary tasks for ESP learners. The novelty of my work in the fact that we had worked out some new methods and activities, which we had approbated on English language lessons during our pedagogical practice. Investigation of the problem: There are many suggestions in the literature as how to teach learners and how to design vocabulary tasks for ESP learners of English as a second language. This problem was investigated by many scholars e.g., Thornburry, Gairns Redman, S. Krashen, Herrel, Miller, Hutchinson and Graves are among them. Construction of the qualification work: It consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of used literature. Total amount of the work is 61 pages. Chapter I is about general and private vocabulary system, ways of enlarging vocabulary base and different ways of presenting vocabulary, language teaching methodology and how to teach English as a second language to ESP learners. Chapter II consists of 3 parts. In this chapter, we gave some information about methods and principles of using the new course book “Scale up”. 21Chapter I: Vocabulary as a base of acquiring language skills 1.1 The importance of vocabulary in ESP teaching and learning Vocabulary learning is an essential part in foreign language learning as the meanings of new words are very often emphasized, whether in books or in classrooms. It is also central to language teaching and is of paramount importance to a language learner. Recent research indicate that teaching vocabulary may be problematic because many teachers are not confident about best practice in vocabulary teaching and at times don’t know where to begin to form an instructional emphasis on word learning. Vocabulary knowledge plays an important role in language learning. It can be easily proved by taking sample from the intellectual development of a child. What do the children begin learning the surroundings with? First of all, they start to learn the names of objects and subjects around, i.e. they learn vocabulary of their parents. Vocabulary is the first essential element of communication. If we want to use language effectively, we must have good stock of vocabulary. We cannot use the language, if we don’t know the words of that language. English language has vast vocabulary. It is the richest language of the world. One cannot learn a language without learning vocabulary. Therefore, the study of vocabulary has occupied the central place in teaching-learning activities. Thornbury stated as follows: “If you spend most of your time studying grammar, your English will not improve very much. You will see most improvement, if you learn more words and expressions. You can say very little with grammar, but you can say almost anything with words.” 3 3 Scott Thornbury     How to Teach Vocabulary   Paperback   – 18 Feb 2002 Longman; 1 edition, p.97 21Huebener stated that the subject matter of language consists essentially of stocks of words and expressions and of the rules that govern the syntax of its speech pattern, that is, vocabulary and grammar. 4 As it is acknowledged, “word” is the most common element in sentences because a language is a collection of words. Words can be compared to bricks of buildings fixed with the help of clay called Grammar. Despite quite small pieces, they are vital to the great structure. Wilkins rightly says, “ Without grammar very little can be conveyed….but without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed” 5 . Therefore, the study of vocabulary is at the center while learning a new language. English being a second language or foreign language, one needs to learn vocabulary in the systematic way. We cannot neglect grammar at all but even if you misuse grammar or pronounce a word wrongly, you’ll be still partly understood, but if you use an incorrect word in your speech, the listener may be confused and misunderstand you. According to Ghadessy, the vocabulary is more important than grammar as the basic of language. In communication, vocabulary is often more important than grammar. It is frustrating for intermediate learners when they discover they cannot communicate effectively because they do not know many of the words they need. Vocabulary is one of the significant aspects in language teaching and learning, above and beyond grammar and pronunciation. A good vocabulary and the ability to use word correctly and effectively can be the passport to the worlds of interesting and exciting information. Famous imperialist poet, Rudyard Kipling says that words are the most powerful drug used by mankind. Those who are rich in vocabulary can speak and write English correctly. Therefore, the study of vocabulary is at the center while learning a new language. English being a second language or foreign language, one needs to learn vocabulary in the systematic way. In fact, without vocabulary communication in a second or foreign language is not possible in a meaningful way. (1993), THE LEXICAL APPROACH, Language Teaching Publication, England, p.111-112 21matter how successfully the sounds of L2 are mastered, without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in an L2 just cannot happen in any meaningful way” . 6 Vocabulary is needed for expressing meaning and in using the receptive (listening and reading) and the productive (speaking and writing) skills. It should be considered as an internal part of learning a foreign language since it leads the way to communication. Nation aptly mentioned, “ Such as writing and reading, vocabulary knowledge is one of the components of language skills”. 7 Harmer clearly states, “if language structures make up the skeleton of language, then it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh”. If one wants to use language effectively, he/she must have good stock of vocabulary. Language is made up of words. Nagy appropriately remarks, “Vocabulary knowledge is fundamental to reading comprehension; one cannot understand text without knowing what most of the words mean”. Teaching vocabulary well is a key aspect of developing engaged and successful readers. Acquiring a large vocabulary can benefit you in any sphere of social activity. It will enable you to understand others' ideas better and to have the satisfaction of getting your thoughts and ideas across more effectively. The main aim of teaching vocabulary is assimilation of the meaning, form of the words and its usage in oral and written speech – that is formation of lexical habits. People can have many aptitudes, but without a large and precise English vocabulary to express them, they cannot take full advantage of these abilities. Unlike aptitudes, vocabulary is not a natural ability; it can be improved if one is willing to make the effort to do so. 8 Language learners who wish to own an ability of fluency in English skills must have a large and adequate vocabulary. Jack C. Richard and Willy A. Renandya assert: The complex materials need to be understood through the vocabulary knowledge as an important. Sufficient English words can make learners 6 McCarthy, M. Unfortunately, learning vocabulary is considered to be as a weak point of the most language learners. Restricted knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure is thought as the main problem in learning language. Without wide range of vocabulary a learner won’t be able to be skillful at reading, writing, listening and speaking. It will enable us to understand the others' ideas better and to have the satisfaction or getting our thoughts and ideas across more effectively. While there are not any magic shortcuts to learning words, the larger our vocabulary becomes, the easier it will be to connect a new word with words we already know, and thus remember its meaning. In summary, learning vocabulary is the very important thing that English students should focus on in order to achieve success in learning and in the future work in the field of English. Vocabulary, as one of the knowledge areas in language, plays a great role for learners in acquiring a language. 9 Harmon, Wood, & Keser, as well as Linse state those learners’ vocabulary development is an important aspect of their language development. Vocabulary knowledge is often viewed as a critical tool for second language learners because a limited vocabulary in a second language impedes successful communication. Underscoring the importance of vocabulary acquisition, emphasizes that “lexical knowledge is central to communicative competence and to the acquisition of a second language”. 10 Nation further describes the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use as complementary: knowledge of vocabulary enables language use and, conversely, language use leads to an increase in vocabulary knowledge. The importance of vocabulary is demonstrated daily in and out the school. In classroom, the achieving students possess the most sufficient vocabulary. 9 Cameron, L. (2001). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 21Research has shown that second language readers rely heavily on vocabulary knowledge and the lack of that knowledge is the main and the largest obstacle for L2 readers to overcome. 11 In production, when we have a meaning or concept that we wish to express, we need to have a store of words from which we can select to express this meaning or concept. “When students travel, they don’t carry grammar books, they carry dictionaries.” 12 On the other hand, vocabulary has been acknowledged as L2 learners’ greatest single source of problems. This remark may possibly reflect that the open-endedness of a vocabulary system is perceived to be a cause of difficulty by learners. Another possible reason is that, unlike syntax and phonology, vocabulary does not have rules the learners may follow to acquire and develop their knowledge. In other words, it is not clear in L2 vocabulary learning what rules apply or which vocabulary items should be learned first. Oxford also claims that vocabulary is “by far the most sizeable and unmanageable component in the learning of any language, whether a foreign or one’s mother tongue, because of tens of thousands of different meanings.” Despite these difficulties that language learners face in L2 vocabulary, they still have to deal with it in their examinations as “vocabulary has traditionally been one of the language components measured in language tests.” Furthermore, many learners see second language acquisition as essentially a matter of learning vocabulary and therefore they spend a great deal of time on memorizing lists of L2 words and rely on their bilingual dictionary as a basic communicative resource. As a result, language teachers and applied linguists now generally recognize the importance of vocabulary learning and are exploring ways of promoting it more effectively. Some of this research takes the form of investigation of strategies learners use specifically for vocabulary, which is our focus of attention. In the field of education, including English (from personal experience), education in Saudi Arabia is still dominated by the view that knowledge is a 11 Hatch, E. & Brown, C. Language Teaching Publications. 21set of facts that have to be memorized. Teaching learning process as focuses on the teacher as a prominent source of knowledge. As a result, students may have problems to understand academic concepts as what they usually get is something abstract. Many students can serve a good level of memorization of teaching material but in the end of teaching learning process, they actually do not understand it at all. Nation states Knowledge is constructed by humans. Knowledge is not a set of facts, concepts, or laws waiting to be discovered. It is not something that exists independent of knower. Humans create or construct knowledge as they attempt to bring meaning to their experience. Everything that we know, we have made. Based on this opinion, a learning process that focuses on the teacher is no longer suitable. It is because our brain is continuously finding meaning and saving meaningful cases, and learning processes have to involve students in finding meaning. Teaching and learning processes have to make it possible for the students to understand the meaning of their learning material. Students as the learning subject are the starting point in teaching and learning, which measure the success of the teaching learning process. Teaching and learning can be successful when the students can directly feel the advantages of learning materials by experiencing and learning it. Going back to English in the Saudi educational system, children are eligible to go school consisting of pre-school, six years of primary school starting at the age of seven, and three years of intermediate (aged 13-15) and high (secondary) school (aged 16-18). English as a foreign language was added to the curriculum starting from the 4 th grade of primary school (age 9). Students receive four 45- minutes lessons of English per week and they have to pass examinations in all subjects, including English, to move from one level to another. From my personal experience over the many years I have been teaching in Saudi Arabia, I have become more and more aware that some of the most basic principles of vocabulary teaching and learning have been forgotten or ignored. In other words, I found that although teaching still focuses more on grammar than on vocabulary, students majoring in English rely heavily on their knowledge of 21vocabulary rather than on their knowledge of grammar in learning English. The more vocabulary students have at their disposal, the better they learn, regardless of their grammatical knowledge, although this is not to say that they should neglect grammar completely. Recent research indicates that teaching vocabulary may be problematic because many teachers are not confident about the best practice in vocabulary teaching and at times do not know where to begin to form an instructional emphasis on word learning. Teaching words is a crucial aspect in learning a language as languages are based on words. It is almost impossible to learn a language without words; even communication between human beings is based on words. Both teachers and students agree that acquisition of the vocabulary is a central factor in teaching a language. Teaching vocabulary is one of the most discussed parts of teaching English as a foreign language. When the teaching and learning process takes place, problems would appear to the teachers. They have problems of how to teach students in order to gain satisfying results. The teacher should prepare and find out the appropriate techniques, which will be implemented to the students. A good teacher should prepare himself or herself with various and up-to-date techniques. Teachers need to be able to master the material in order to be understood by students, and make them interested and happy in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. The teachers should be concerned that teaching vocabulary is something new and different from student’s native language. They also have to take into account that teaching English for young learners is different from adults. The teachers have to know the characteristics of his\her learners. They moreover need to prepare good techniques and suitable material in order to gain the target of language teaching. Vocabulary learning strategies Beside the above techniques, there are also, vocabulary learning strategies that teachers can take into account. They can train their students to use these strategies. Schmitt and McCarthy propose strategies to learn vocabulary as 21follows: (1) guessing from context, (2) using word parts and mnemonic techniques to remember words, and (3) using vocabulary cards to remember foreign language-first language word pairs. It is supported by Murcia who also proposes three strategies to learn vocabularies. The first strategy is guessing meaning from context; she says that a context is rich enough to give adequate clues to guess the word’s meaning. The second strategy is mnemonic devices: she proposes keyword technique. When seeing or hearing the target word, the learner is reminded of the keyword. The third strategy is vocabulary notebooks; she suggests a memory aid in independent learning by setting up vocabulary notebooks. Finally, teachers may encourage students to keep a vocabulary notebook because a great deal of vocabulary growth ultimately depends on the learner. They may have students who are successful vocabulary language learners share their notebook methods. For students who need help, they can demonstrate how to set up a vocabulary notebook that is neat and organized in a manner that will facilitate multiple retrievals of the words. If the notebook is not set up well, then learners are less likely to practice the words, which defeat the purpose of keeping the notebook in the first place. An attempt is made to review the trends in the area of teaching vocabulary through various techniques ESL/EFL teachers use when teaching. Before presenting the meaning or form of vocabulary items, teachers need to notice the type of the vocabulary, the students’ level and characteristics, and also the value of the techniques for the learners. In other words, students' age, level of education as well as English proficiency...etc. May affect their learning, so teachers need to be aware of these differences when applying their teaching techniques. They can further provide their students with vocabulary learning strategies with opportunities to encounter words repeatedly and in more than one context. 211.2. Differences between general and private vocabulary system What is a word? A word is a unit of a language that carries a meaning and consists typically of a root and zero or more affixes. Words can be combined to create phrases, clauses and sentences. They are separated by spaces in the written language. A word consisting of two or more roots joined together is called a compound (e.g. a record player, a classroom, a second-hand ). Each word belongs to one or more of eight different word classes: nouns ( apple ), adjectives ( green ), pronouns ( you ), verbs ( to write ), adverbs ( here ), prepositions ( before ), conjunctions ( while ) and interjections ( hey ). What is vocabulary? According to the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary , a noun “vocabulary” has two definitions: - all the words known and used by a particular person - all the words which exist in a particular language or subject We divide the knowledge of vocabulary known by a particular person into two groups: - receptive / passive vocabulary – it is defined as the set of all words that are understood at reading or listening but not used in the spoken or written expressions - productive / active vocabulary – it is the set of all words that are not only understood, but also used meaningfully when creating new sentences. 13 The passive vocabulary is naturally bigger than the active one. The more often we meet a particular word and the more often we use it the sooner it becomes an item in our active vocabulary. Vocabulary can basically be defined “as the words we teach in the foreign language” which the teacher has to introduce and explain to the students. One needs to be aware of the fact that new vocabulary does not mean that only one new word is being introduced to the students because often multi-word idioms or single 13 Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary . India: Cambridge University Press, 2003 21ideas which consist of more than one word are introduced. Therefore, “a useful convention is to cover all such cases by talking about vocabulary items rather than words”. The teacher needs to present the vocabulary in a way that students can easily understand how to use the new words. In addition to that the learner`s individual strategies for learning and using vocabulary need to be taken in to consideration. There is a variety of aspects that need to be taken into account when talking about vocabulary in the EFL classroom. These are the form, its grammar, collocation, different aspects of meaning and the word formation. The form of new vocabulary is really important which means in detail its pronunciation and its spelling. In order to learn new words, you need to know “what a word sounds like (its pronunciation) and what it looks like (its spelling)”. The pronunciation of a word is “the way in which language is spoken” or “the way a person speaks the words of language”. In order to be understood by a native speaker of English you need to pronounce the words the right way. The spelling is “to name or write the letters of a word in their correct order”. That is where most mistakes occur because a lot of students know how to pronounce a word correctly but they often seem to confuse its spelling. The next important point concerning vocabulary is grammar and with it grammatical rules which are “rules in a language for changing the form of words and combining them into sentences”. It is the person`s knowledge and use of the language in certain situations and how to use it in grammatical contexts. Another important point that defines vocabulary is the collocation of words which is a part combination of words. To collocate words means to combine words that regularly used together in a language. When you introduce a word like conclusion, for example, you as a teacher need to tell your students that they cannot say make a conclusion but come to a conclusion. It is time to talk about the different aspects of meaning which are denotation, connotation and appropriateness. Denotation means that something is a sign or a symbol of something, furthermore that it indicates something. The meaning of a word is “what it refers to in the real world”. The connotation of a word is “an idea 21suggested or implied by a word in addition to its main meaning”. This means that every word has a main meaning but it can still have various connotations and a student can associate different things with one word. Appropriateness of a word means that a speaker should think about the words he uses before he says them and he should ask himself whether they are suitable or acceptable in this context or not. If they are not, he needs to find words that fit or that are correct. The words have to express exactly what a speaker once to say. The very last point is the word formation which is the way in which words are put together and into the right order in a sentence. This means that word can be broken down into their single components which do have single meanings as well but a different meaning when they are being put together. It is the teachers choose whether to teach, prefixes and suffixes or not, for example, un- or –able like it is used in unable. Graves defines vocabulary as the entire stock of words belonging to a branch of knowledge or known by an individual. He also states that the lexicon of a language is its vocabulary, which includes words and expressions. Krashen extends Graves’ definition further by stating that lexicon organizes the mental vocabulary in a speaker’s mind. An individual’s mental lexicon is that person’s knowledge of vocabulary. Miller states that vocabulary is a set of words that are the basic building blocks used in the generation and understanding of sentences. According to Gardener vocabulary is not only confined to the meaning of words but also includes how vocabulary in a language is structured: how people use and store words and how they learn words and the relationship between words, phrases, categories of words and phrases. Cummins 14 states that there are different types of vocabulary: Reading vocabulary - This refers to all the words an individual can recognize when reading a text. Listening vocabulary - It refers to all the words an individual can recognize when listening to speech. 14 Herrel. A.L. (2004). Fifty strategies for teaching English language learners . Speaking vocabulary - This refers to all the words an individual can use in speech. Lexicon also refers to a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information about them and can also refer to the mental faculty or power of vocal communication. According to McCarthy the role that mental lexicon plays in speech perception and production is a major topic in the field of psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. 15 We can divide words on the basis of relations between their meanings into groups: - synonyms – words with the same or nearly the same meaning: small X little - antonyms – words with opposite meanings: short X long - hypernymy – words with more general or superordinate meaning to other words: colour is a hypernym of black, yellow, green etc. - hyponymy – words which are subordinate to word with more genera meaning: rose, lily, tulip are hyponymy of flowers - meronymy – words which are semantically part of something: nose, eyes, lips are meronymy of a face - holonymy – words which are wholes that other words are parts of: body is a holonym of arm, leg, waist etc. - homonyms – words with the same spelling (called homographs) or pronunciation (called homophones) but with a different meaning: short – small distance X short – not patient to X two X too - polysemes – words with multiple different but closely related meanings: fair = reasonable (person, idea or amount), pleasant (person), pale (hair or skin), beautiful, average, quite good, quite large etc. 16 branch = of a tree, a family, a river, a bank, science etc. 15 McCarthy, Michael: Vocabulary . It also means to know the words that tend to co-occur, which is another type of relation between vocabulary items, called collocation. 17 This is defined as a word or phrase which is frequently used with another word or phrase; the combination is often difficult to guess. Using collocations helps to sound English naturally and improves style of written and spoken language. 18 The form A word can have several forms that are changed by addition of grammatical or lexical affixes to the root. Pupils need to know, for example, that a suffix “s” attached to a verb marks the 3rd person in the singular and the present simple while attached to a noun marks the plural form. But it is not the rule vice versa - 3rd person and plural are not always created by the suffix “s”. There are some exceptions that are formed irregularly such as one mouse – two mice or you can – she can . Other things that are useful to know are which affixes can be attached to the particular word or the meaning of the particular affixes. This can help learners to guess the meaning of the whole word because every affix has lexical or semantic role. I offer a few examples for illustration. e.g. · the prefix ir- is used to express negation, lack or the opposite of the adjective to which is attached or of a new word that is formed from the adjective: regular/ly X irregular/ly , as well as other prefixes such as im-, in-, un- etc.: perfect X imperfect, correct X incorrect, happy X unhappy – the prefix un - can be joined also to nouns, adverbs or verbs: able X unable - the suffixes – ment, -ion/-tion are used to form a noun mostly from verbs: develop – development , relate – relation - the suffixes - ful and - less mark adjectives; the first one means ‘with’, the second one is its opposite and means ‘without’: useful X useless etc. 17 Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman, D. India: Cambridge University Press, 2003 21The spelling and the pronunciation The server en.wikipedia.org defines proper spelling as “the writing of word or words with all necessary letters and diacritics present in an accepted standard order”. It is important to know the right spelling because it is a representation of the spoken word and it remains unchanged for a long time. The pronunciation refers to the spoken language; it is the way in which a word is spoken. There are many dialects in English and the number of speech sounds varies from one to another. Three following are accepted as standard accents: ‘Received Pronunciation’ for the UK, ‘General American’ for the USA and ‘General Australian’ for Australia. Each of them has a bit different number of sounds that are transcribed by the ‘International Phonetic Alphabet’. The vowels are more important for distinguishing between the regional accents and therefore each of them has their own list of vowels while the consonants are common for all three standard accents. A British variation is preferred at schools in both, the spelling and the pronunciation. 19 Contrary to any language, most of English words are not pronounced as they are written, which is mostly the stumbling block for the beginners in learning of English vocabulary. Moreover, I met pupils who even did not endeavour to learn the correct spelling or pronunciation. It is enough for them to learn the spelling for the written test and a kind of pronunciation for oral testing because teachers are often satisfied when pupils learn ‘at least’ the meaning. This is clearly wrong attitude of both sides – the teachers’ and pupils’ – and it is needed to be changed. Wrong spelling or pronunciation can cause misunderstanding (e.g. affect /ə´fekt/ = to influence, to pretend X effect /I´fekt/ = the result, the use, to achieve; or to be unable /_n’eIbl/ = not to be able X to enable /I’ neIbl/ = to make able). 1.3. Ways of student`s enlarging vocabulary base 19 en.wikipedia.org 21What helps to remember words? I would like to offer a few principles in this subchapter that can help to move the required word into permanent long-term memory. I made an extract from Thornbury’s summary of the principles that were found out by researches: 20 1) Repetition – only repetition has not any long-term effect; but there is one exception - the repetition of encounters with a word. If words have been met at least for seven times over spaced intervals, for example, when reading, they are on good way to long-term memory. 2) Retrieval practice effect – a kind of repetition that means the retrieval of word from memory, which helps the learner to recall it again later. 3) Spacing – means not to teach too many vocabulary items together but in small groups and with pauses between them. 4) Pacing – means to provide the pupils enough time for particular work because each of them has his or her own pace and to enable them to work silently and individually. 5) Use – means to put words to use in some interesting way. Students should be encouraged to notice how certain words perform in different contexts, preferably at the level of a text or paragraph. Words don’t exist in isolation. Students’ dependence on their first language in clarifying the meaning of English words should be diplomatically discouraged. Understanding the meaning of a certain word in context can often be prevented by word-for-word translation. Therefore, where possible they should use a monolingual (English- English) instead of a bilingual dictionary. Students should be encouraged to guess the meaning of unknown words where possible and to deduce the principles of vocabulary use in English on their own. This develops their awareness of how words work in context. Spoon-feeding meanings doesn’t usually help. - What do you need to keep in mind when developing vocabulary activities for your classes? 20 Thornbury, Scott: How to Teach Vocabulary . Harlow: Longman, 2002, p-8,9 21- vocabulary should be taught in context, not as isolated words; - vocabulary should be taught through English, avoiding word-for-word translation into mother tongue; - learners should be encouraged to work out the meaning of the unknown words; - there is a difference between active and passive vocabulary; - learners should be encouraged to analyze words and word combinations in a text. Memorizing new words is a huge part of learning a new language and yet it seems to be so difficult to accomplish. Today, we want to share some fun tips with you that learning new vocabulary becomes easier and more enjoyable. We also want your input: tell us in the comments` section below your favorite ways to memorize words. 1) Read – this is an essential activity because reading is the best way to be exposed to a rich and wide vocabulary. Remember: you can read whatever you want you can read literature books if that is what you enjoy, but if you don`t, try reading a comic book or a magazine. You can buy a cook book and read that, or read a children`s book to your kids. There are thousands of articles online, news websites…. the options are endless. So find something that you like and read it. Reading is an easy, fun and relaxing way to boost your language skills. Plus, you will be learning about other things as well win, win! 2) Understanding context: so, you have learned many new words, but if you do not know how and when to use them correctly, you have not truly learned. This is also why reading is so important because it gives each word context, and that will help you understand the meaning and use of the word. For example, in the sentence “the soup is horrible, it tastes so bitter” you might not understand the word “bitter”, but thanks to the context of the whole sentences, you will know it means “not good”. Context helps us comprehend when a word is used in formal language or informal language, if it is slang we use with friends, or if it is a word that is usually used in written English but not in conversation. 213) Related words – if you just learned the word “care”, don`t stop there. Use a dictionary or the internet to find derivatives of that word, and expressions that use it. For example, careful, careless, carefree, take care. See? you started with one word but quickly learned four more, and because their meaning is related, it is easier to understand and remember what each one means. 4) Make sentences – making sentences helps us put everything we have learned into action: so you have learned new words and you understand when to use it. But for the brain to remember this word in the future, the best way to memorize is by using it. Make 10 sentences that use different meanings of the word you want to learn or if it is a verb, with different tenses. For example, if you want to remember the phrasal verb “to tidy up”, write: - Maria you must tidy your room up. - I have to tidy up before my friends come. - Paul will watch TV after he finishes tidying up the kitchen. Ever heard Benjamin Franklin`s quote, “Tell me and I forget teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn?” Well by making sentence you are helping your brain to learn because it gets actively involved in the learn process. 5) Record yourself - by hearing your own voice say the words out loud and feeling your mouth move, you are making even more connections in your brain. If you studied English in the past but have not practiced it for a long time, you might know the words but find it hard to remember them. Yet, once you start speaking, it becomes easier to access those words when you need them. So, use a camera, your phone or your webcam to record yourself practicing your new vocabulary words and using them in the sentence you made. 6) Make flashcards - flashcards are popular way of learning words. You can also use post-it notes and put them in places where you will see them regularly, or draw the definition of the word if you are a visual learner. Every day, take out your flashcards and read over them. Read the word and try to remember what it means before checking the drawing or definition behind it. 217) Mnemonics – Mnemonics are ways to help us remember things better. A great online recourse for mnemonics is the mnemonicdictionary.com; you can type in the words you want to remember and you will see many different ways to help you memorize. 8) Take notes - a great little trick is to always carry around a note-book and pencil. Then, if you hear a word or sentence you like in a movie or a song, you can write it down. When you get home you can research it and add it to the list of words you have learned. 9) Play games – when you are having fun it`s so much easier to learn. So play games like boggle or scrabble. These games will test your creativity and make you think outside the box. 10) Speaking – in the 5 th , we explained how recording yourself helps your brain remember words better. So, what better way to do this than to talk with a friend? If you do not have any native English speaking friends, don`t worry! Just invite another friend who wants to learn English out for a cup of tea and practice. To get the most out of these conversations, we suggest that each week you choose a different topic. This way you will be using different vocabulary. Make sure to spend an hour or two to make a list of words you would like to use before meeting your friend. 11) Repeat – As Spanish people say “repetition is the key to success”. It`s true. To learn anything you must repeat and repeat! Every day, set aside some time to study vocabulary. It doesn`t matter how you do it, but it is important that you practice a little daily. This will create a good habit. 12) Be patient – And finally: be kind and be patient with yourself. Learning English is a big accomplishment, and you should be very proud of yourself each time you learn a new word. Each year the International Reading Association surveys literacy leaders from around the world regarding “what’s hot” and “what’s not” in literacy. 21 Year after year vocabulary has been rated “not hot.” Yet over 75% of those surveyed think it 21 Cassidy, J., and Cassidy, D. We agree, and the fact that you are reading this means that you probably do, too. Research suggests that vocabulary is enormously important to children’s development, especially in reading. Research clearly indicates that children with larger vocabularies have higher school achievement in general and higher reading achievement in particular. Fortunately, a child’s vocabulary is not predestined. Rather, teachers can have a real impact on children’s vocabulary knowledge. Research shows that teachers can do things that significantly increase children’s vocabularies and by doing so children’s reading comprehension will also improve. 22 Studies indicate that children do learn words from books read aloud to them. Most helpful will be reading aloud books and other materials (such as magazines or environmental print) that have some, but not too many, words that are new to children. Read-aloud of storybooks is important, but also important is read-aloud of other types of text, such as information book. Some research even suggests that teachers and parents highlight vocabulary more when reading aloud information books than when reading aloud stories. Get them reading Children also learn new words through reading independently. Researchers estimate that 5–15% of all the words we learn we learn from reading. 23 And indeed, children who read more tend to have richer vocabularies. So when we engage students in motivational activities to encourage reading, we are simultaneously improving their vocabularies. Engage children in rich oral language Children also learn words through talk, especially from listening to and participating in high-level conversations. For example, one study showed that young children whose parents use more “rare words” at the dinner table had higher 22 Stahl, S. A., and Fairbanks, M. M. (1986). In school we need to involve children in rich, meaningful conversations whenever we can. Encourage reading and talk at home As the “rare words” study suggests, children can also develop their vocabularies at home. Encouraging reading and conversations outside of school, for example by sending home books and interactive activities, can have positive effects. Even viewing certain television programs, most notably Sesame Street , has been shown to improve young children’s vocabularies. Raise word consciousness We want children to notice when they encounter new words and to want to learn them. Some researchers refer to this as word consciousness . 24 There are many ways to draw children’s attention to and interest in words around them. Playing with words through games, songs, and humor can be powerful. Simply encouraging children to recognize when they have encountered new words, and to notice special characteristics of words, will also raise word consciousness. Teach important words Yes, we can teach children new words. But time and other factors mean there are limits to how many new words we can teach. For this reason, it is important to select words for teaching very carefully. Factors to consider include how important and useful knowledge of the word would be, how easily relatable the word is to other words the children know, and how much knowing the word will help with the unit, text, or situation at hand. Teach conceptually-related words It often makes sense to teach words not individually but in sets that are conceptually-related, for example words related to farms, words related to families, or names of different animals. Indeed, several research-tested techniques for teaching vocabulary are well suited to teaching groups of words. Relate new words to known words 24 Graves, M. F., and Watts-Taffe, S. M. (2002). The place of word consciousness in a research-based vocabulary program. In A. E. Farstrup and S. J. Samuels (Eds.), What Research Has to Say about Reading (pp. 140–165). 21Theory and research on vocabulary learning suggest that helping children relate new words to words they already know is very important. For example, if a child knows the word fruit , and knows the word apple , these words can help children learn the word kiwi . If a child knows what it means to be mad , that may help him learn frustrated . Teaching children to use the context around a word to try to figure out word meanings can also be effective. Expose children to words multiple times in multiple meaningful contexts Clearly, knowledge of a word is likely to be stronger after three encounters than after just one, and more thorough after encounters in multiple contexts than just one. Successful vocabulary programs have children encountering words repeatedly and diversely. As you well know, simply hearing or reading a dictionary definition for a word does not do enough to help children “get it”, nor does basic drill and practice. Rather, children need to encounter words in meaningful activities, conversations, and texts. Children need to live new words. Enjoy words There has not been a lot of research on the relationship between motivation and vocabulary learning, but successful vocabulary programs seem to have motivational elements, and motivation or interest is a part of word consciousness. Certainly in our own teaching we have noticed that when children were more motivated to learn new words, they did so more readily, and we would guess that you have noticed this, too. We should strive to have classrooms in which words are enjoyed, relished, celebrated, and even loved. Congratulations for all that you do to make that happen. Chapter II: Characteristic features of ESP course 212.1. Materials selection in teaching vocabulary to ESP courses English for specific purposes For a relatively long time, students studying for different professions were taught more or less General English, which was not always very helpful when applied in real-life situations of different areas of specialism, such as engineering, tourism, science and technology, medicine, and so on. With time, developments in language theory indicated the need to pay more attention to individual learners. This realization together with a growing demand for English courses tailored to students’ specific needs led to the emergence of English for Specific Purposes in the late 1960s. This area proved to be fertile ground, and so ESP has undergone rapid development in recent decades. For some time now, English has been the main language of international communication, which has become an integral part of most modern professions. To be able to communicate successfully in English, students of different professions are thus taught ESP, whose overriding characteristics are “the sense of purpose and the sense of vocation”. 25 These characteristics predominantly focus on what students will need in their working environments, or, as Harding put it: “in ESP – English for Specific Purposes – the purpose for learning the language is paramount and relates directly to what the learner needs to do in their vocation or job”. The large number of different professions has brought about the need for ESP specialisms, all of which share some common characteristics, such as specific needs, technical specialized vocabulary and documentation, specialized texts and interaction, an identifiable working environment, and so on. To cater for these subject-specific needs in English teaching/learning, ESP predominantly focuses on language skills, structures, functions and vocabulary that will be needed by the members of a chosen target group in their professional and vocational environment. Nevertheless, it should be stressed that, as Hutchinson and Waters 25 Harding, K. (2007). English for Specific Purposes. Spain: Oxford University Press. 21emphasize, ESP “is not a particular kind of language or methodology” but “an approach to language learning, which is based on learner need”. In line with these overriding characteristics of ESP, the roles of ESP teachers and learners at least to some extent differ from the roles of GE teachers and learners. The next important aspect in which ESP differs from GE is materials used for teaching and/or learning. The following sections first briefly outline some crucial issues regarding both ESP teachers and learners. This is followed by a more in-depth discussion of important issues regarding ESP materials. Organizing the ESP course is very important step to achieve a satisfying goal in the course. There exist many factors playing a crucial role in organizing ESP course without them the learning process would not lead to effectiveness. The term ´specific´ in ESP refers to a specific purpose for which English is learnt and teacher should be familiar with. He or she should be able to find an answer to what Hutchinson and Waters describe as ‘language description’. The ‘language description’ involves questions, e.g. ‘What topic areas will need to be covered?’, ‘What does the student need to learn?’ ‘What aspects of language will be needed and how will they be described?’ Finding the right answers to these questions results from the setting exact goals and objectives of the course. Designing a syllabus analyses ‘what’ the course is going to be about. Setting goals and objectives of the course in advance is inevitable. Another feature of organizing course underlines the way the learning is achieved. Hutchinson and Waters speak about ‘learning theory’ which provides the theoretical basis for the methodology, by helping us to understand how people learn.” It is natural that learning strategies vary and corresponds with learners’ groups, their age, level or reason they study. The way adults acquire language is differ from children, the group of advanced expects different attitude from beginners and teachers determine which aspects of ESP learning will be focused on to meet learners’ needs and expectations successfully. Hutchinson and Waters point out another aspect affecting the ESP course as well. It relates to learner´s surrounding and discusses the questions of ‘who’, ‘why’, ‘where’ and ‘when’ connected with the 21nature of particular target and learning situation. They describe them as ‘needs analysis’. To organize the ESP course effectively and consequently achieve a satisfactory goal, having respect for all three factors is evident designed by a team of local experts together with a UK consultant to tailor the materials for Uzbekistan context. The course focuses on listening, speaking and writing skills and also includes material on team working, communication and e-mail skills. The piloting of the new course starts in February 2014. The project also provides teacher training opportunities for English language teachers in tourism colleges. Selecting material Choosing ESP materials determines the running of the course and underlines content of the lesson. Good material should help teacher in organizing the course or what is more it can function as an introduction into the new learning techniques, and support teachers and learners in the process of learning. Materials are also a kind of teacher reflection, “they should truly reflect what you think and feel about the learning process 26 .” Good material should be based on various interesting texts and activities providing a wide range of skills. Teachers determines which aspects of ESP learning will be focused on but one piece of material can serve for developing more than one skill, e.g. reading, listening, vocabulary etc. “Teaching materials are tools that can be figuratively cut up into component pieces and then rearranged to suit the needs, abilities, and interests of the students in the course.” 27 Teachers should be aware of the fact if the material is suitable not only for a particular discipline and answers given course goals but also for teachers and learners them. Materials should also function as a link between already learnt ´existing knowledge´ and new information. Concerning the selection of ´General English´ material and ´ESP´ material some criteria must be matched as well. Language teacher is responsible for 26 Hutchinson,T. and Waters, A. (1987). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 21selecting an appropriate text that contributes to students´ effectiveness that means he or she should pay attention to suitable criteria for its choice. Wallace 28 suggests those main criteria:  Adequacy - should be at the appropriate language, age level;  Motivation - should present content which is interesting and motivating for students work. It goads into students effectiveness, interest and pleasure of work;  Sequence - it is important if there is some relation to previous texts, activities, topics not to miss the sense of a lesson;  Diversity - should lead to a range of classroom activities, be a vehicle for teaching specific language structure and vocabulary and promote reading strategies;  Acceptability - it should accept different cultural customs or taboos. Selecting an appropriate material regarding the main criteria is an essential phase in organizing each course. It may happen that learners´ needs and expectations are not met due to wrong choice of material. “Materials provide a stimulus to learning. Good materials do not teach: they encourage learners to learn.” 29 Hutchinson and Waters, recalling the importance of reading skills for specific target language use areas, associated the stage of finding appropriate materials with searching for a suitable text. English for Science and Technology has two distinct areas: lexis and grammar that the text should reflect. Hutchinson and Waters found out that some forms typical for scientific texts were not covered in materials of General English. Those forms were: compound nouns, passives, conditionals. Today, the situation is different. The forms listed above form part of the curriculum of general English. Materials selection, adaptation, or writing is an important area in ESP teaching, representing a practical result of effective course development and providing students with materials that will equip them with the knowledge they will need in their future business life. 28 Wallace, C. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 21One of the most important issues regarding ESP materials selection and/or writing is whether the materials selected should be solely or primarily subject specific and what the most appropriate ratio of general materials to subject-specific materials is. General materials focus on one’s general ability to communicate more effectively, while subject-specific materials focus on a particular job or industry 30 . When carefully selected, both general and subject-specific materials will equip the students with the necessary skills and knowledge, but subject-specific materials nevertheless better cater for ESP learners’ specific needs. Consequently, ESP learners will very often feel more affinity for materials that they find relevant to their area of specialism. The use of subject-specific textbooks is also more in line with the realization that students are individuals with different needs, styles, and interests and with some central traits of cognitive theory, which, as Skela points out, are the following: - It focuses on purposeful learning; - The learner is seen as an active processor of information; - Learning is the process by which the learner tries to make sense of the information by imposing a meaningful interpretation or pattern on it; - One of the basic teaching techniques is problem-solving; - Recently it has been associated with a focus on deliberate acquisition of a language as a logical system; - The importance of carefully selected rules, which can provide an important shortcut in learning process. According to Prabhu, another important issue regarding materials is that they should be used as sources: “The fact that materials need to be used as sources rather than as pre-constructed courses should not be regarded as a weakness of task-based teaching; it can in fact be strength for any form of teaching”. Teaching Vocabulary content Vocabulary is the backbone of ESP classroom teaching. Ur defines vocabulary as “… the words we teach in a foreign language.” Thornbury states that 30 Ellis, M. & Johnson, C. (1994). Teaching Business English. Oxford: Oxford University Press 21vocabulary and lexis in English are frequently used interchangeably. However, words are the building blocks in a language. One cannot develop his knowledge of a specific specialty unless he gets a rich background of its lexical items. English learners may face big problems when learning vocabulary and even when moving from one level to a higher one. Macaro spots the light on vocabulary when learning a foreign language, especially if it deals with different disciplines where sub- technical vocabulary exists and which are considered as the most crucial type of vocabulary to be learned in order to enhance the teaching and learning process within an ESP classroom. When selecting ESP materials, a great consideration must be given to vocabulary content since it presents the main concern of students’ needs. In ESP, “specialized texts of any sort, whatever written or spoken, exhibit various characteristic lexical features.” 31 Technical abbreviations, symbols and formulae, highly technical vocabulary, and sub technical vocabulary are the lexical features of ESP texts. Kennedy and Bolitho maintain that teaching vocabulary to ESP students starts from word formation (prefixes and suffixes and identification of word classes) then moves to word relationships (synonymy, contextual clues, selection from alternatives, building up sets, and collocations. ESP materials are of different forms and contain different vocabulary content; the selection depends on the needs of the course, intended language and the degree of authenticity, and the students’ level and specialty. Words do not exist as isolated items in language. They are integrated in a complex system in which different levels of a lexical item is produced in order to supply a suitable understanding in receptive skills and provide an adequate production of ideas in productive ones. Richards and Renandya say that “vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read, and write.” Some teachers may use the same ESP material for different classes ignoring the variation among different classrooms. Also, some of them may use the same material in all lectures. In this situation, students will get bored and may hate this 31 Kennedy, C. and Bolitho, R. (1984). English for Specific Purposes. Hong Kong: Macmillan Publichers Limited 21class. That is why appropriate ESP materials selection would be important and can play a crucial role in ESP lesson planning. Ellis and Johnson 32 distinguish between two levels of materials selection. The first one occurs at the beginning of the course when teachers suggest their course books and materials. The second level occurs when the teacher is going to select items from the chosen course book. As Ellis and Johnson emphasize, the choice of materials has a major impact on what happens in the course. This impact is demonstrated on the following three levels: It “determines what kind of language the learners will be exposed to and, as a consequence, the substance of what they will learn in terms of vocabulary, structures, and functions”; It “has implications for the methods and techniques by which the learners will learn”; Last but not least, “the subject of or content of the materials is an essential component of the package from the point of view of relevance and motivation”. The selection of ESP materials should thus above all depend on the needs of the learners in relation to their future or present jobs: that is, materials should focus on the appropriate topics and include “tasks and activities that practice the target skills areas” 33 . Another important criterion that should be taken into account when selecting materials is the level of language knowledge students have already acquired and the target level they will need to communicate successfully in their jobs. ESP is predominantly student-centered, and consequently students’ considerations should be at the top of the list of selection criteria. According to Lewis and Hill, students’ considerations include the following: - Will the materials be useful to the students? - Do they stimulate students’ curiosity? - Are the materials relevant to the students and their needs? - Are they fun to do? - Will the students find the tasks and activities worth doing? 32 Ellis, M. & Johnson, C. Oxford: Oxford University Press 21To sum up, after analyzing learner needs and setting objectives for the course, the ESP teacher has to select materials that will help the students achieve the course objectives. These materials should also relate closely to the learners’ specific skills and content needs, which is an important precondition for full exploitation of the materials as well as the learners’ motivation Readily available textbooks vs. tailor-made materials The decision on whether to use a readily available textbook or tailor-made materials is primarily based on the learners’ subject area. If their subject area is more general, the likelihood of finding suitable published materials is much higher. Accordingly, ESP teachers will most often select suitable materials from existing printed materials. In the case of more specific subject areas, the most widely accepted view is that ESP teachers should also first “question whether the learners’ needs are significantly different from those of other groups” and, if possible, select from existing printed materials and resort to writing materials “when all other possibilities of providing materials have been exhausted” 34 . If the institution encourages teachers to develop tailor-made materials and if there are several teachers of foreign languages for specific purposes, the institutions are more likely to provide their students with tailor-made materials. These writers also point out that the number of tailor-made materials for LSP in Slovenian higher education institutions is relatively high, due mainly to the fact that teachers here strive to cater for the specific needs of the professional language they teach. To meet this end, they either adapt commercial textbooks to the specific needs of the specific subject area and to the level of students’ language knowledge or prepare in-house materials if no suitable printed materials are available in the market. If a teacher resorts to using a readily available textbook, the selection of structures, vocabulary, skills, functions, and so on is conditioned by the textbook to a large extent and can be extended into other areas teachers find relevant to their students. Tailor-made materials, on the other hand, provide the teacher with the opportunity to decide on combinations of vocabulary, functions and structures and 34 Hutchinson,T. and Waters, A. (1987). English for Specific Purposes: a Learning Centred Approach. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 21to develop materials that will introduce most relevant vocabulary and related functions and structures. A final but significant factor is that psychologically a textbook represents something concrete and thus gives a measure of progress and achievement throughout the course. Consequently, when designing materials teachers should bear this in mind and prepare materials that present a logical whole and in which the sequence of units is logical and enables the students to see and evaluate their progress. Although learners can undoubtedly learn most of the needed skills, functions and to a great extent also general terminology from general business textbooks, they will undoubtedly gain even more when using tailor-made materials or a combination of a general business textbook and tailor-made materials because these two options are more likely to provide them with directly applicable knowledge. The use of word lists as the main source of vocabulary learning is favorable in the teaching and learning of the English vocabulary. Criteria for Materials Selection in ESP Authentic texts are very important in showing real language use though it is sometimes difficult to find appropriate ones. In fact, most teachers prefer to use them. “Authentic material is any kind of material taken from the real world and not specifically created for the purpose of language teaching.” Authentic materials are those taken as they are in the original or natural sources. “It has been traditionally supposed that the language presented to learners should be simplified in some way for easy access and acquisition. Nowadays there are recommendations that the language presented should be authentic.” Many people prefer such classroom resources because of their natural language use and explanations, as stated in Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics. In language teaching, the use of materials that were not originally developed for pedagogical purposes, such as the use of magazines, newspapers, advertisements, news reports, or songs. Such materials are often thought to contain more realistic and natural examples of language use than those found in textbooks and other specially developed teaching materials. 21On the one hand, using authentic materials is very helpful because they have a positive impact on learners’ motivation, satisfy learners’ needs, and supply authentic cultural information and exposure to real language. On the other hand, using authentic materials may contain difficult language, difficult vocabulary items and complex language structures as they can be too culturally. Some interesting texts may go beyond students’ level and current abilities. This would not make problems only for students, it may also struggle teachers. Simplified materials are materials used by teachers to facilitate the learning process. When using authentic materials may not be very helpful and it is difficult for students to understand them since the language and the use of words may be highly complex, thus, the use of simplified ones would be the solution. Simplified materials use understandable language, provide clear objectives, and focus on specific items of the lecture. It seems that most, if not all, ESP lessons include the use of an ESP material or series of materials. Not all students enjoy them and not all lessons provide appropriate ESP materials selection. There is no rule for selecting or adapting them but some said that following specific criteria may make it easier for them. Paul proposes a division of the lesson into two parts: educational and fun sections. Selecting materials for ESP students does not resemble the same as selecting for general English students which need only print, audio, and video materials as Ellis and Johnson point out. For ESP teachers, the selection extends the use of what is available. Sometimes, they need to adapt or look for over the shelf materials in order to help ESP students achieve their aims. When doing so, they need to respect certain criteria. Ellis and Johnson explain the criteria for selecting ESP materials: types of learners and their language level, relevance, learners’ age and cultural background, and appropriateness of methodology or style. Moreover, they emphasize the distinction between different types of learners and their language level; pre- experience learners and job-experienced learners. Relevance of language and skills is the second key element that must be respected when selecting materials. Another important criterion is to respect learners’ age and cultural background. In other 21words, types of activities differ among groups of different age, background knowledge and cultural features. The last element is the appropriateness of methodology or style for learners. In other words, “the trainer should experiment to find out an approach to use with a particular group and then select activities accordingly.” Wallace suggests the following criteria when selecting ESP materials: - Adequacy: the selected materials should contain appropriate language and information about the course. - Motivation: they should present interesting content in order to help students be active and work hard in order to understand better. This criterion should be respected in order to make students’ work more effective. - Sequence: it is important to have materials that are related to the lecture. There must be a relation to previous texts, activities, topics not to miss the sense of a lesson. - Diversity: The selected material should lead to a range of classroom activities, be a vehicle for teaching specific language structure and vocabulary, and promote strategies. - Acceptability: It should contain acceptable cultural customs and language. Characteristics of Motivating ESP Materials ESP materials are not selected solely to transform information from teacher to learners. In fact, they must be selected for educational purposes as well as for fun and motivation. If the teacher does not think of this side, learners would not be satisfied and happy concerning what they are learning. Thus, the teacher should focus on what attracts his students for the learning process. It is therefore helpful for teachers to follow the factors that might help in motivating learners. Ellis and Johnson suggest three perspectives: credibility; to use materials which have enough knowledge about the subject and the specialism, up-to-date materials; to use novice materials because old ones are old-fashioned ideas and language, and attractive materials; to use materials which contain acceptable layout, good visuals, and easy access. 21Materials evaluation is a means based on examining learning materials in order to establish their value. Tomlinson defines materials evaluation as “a process that involves measuring the value (or potential value) of a set of learning materials”. Evaluation focuses on the students’ satisfaction of their needs. “In language teaching, the process of measuring the value and effectiveness of learning materials” (Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics). In other words, evaluation of ESP materials is the judgment of the appropriateness of materials for an ESP classroom. ESP materials evaluation can be done through four stages as explained in the following graph. 21ESP materials evaluation is a matching process: “matching your own analyzed needs with available solutions” 35 . Moreover, this process is helpful to match solutions for problems that occur on the level of materials. Hutchinson and waters divide evaluation into four stages as shown in graph (02). In the first stage; defining criteria, the teacher has to set his goals for a specific material. The next stage is subjective analysis where developing and testing the course in terms of materials requirements. The third phase is objective analysis where the teacher focuses on the aims of the material itself. The last stage is matching. It occurs when investigating the problems on the level of both subjective and objective analysis and trying to remedy them through adapting content or methodology. ESP materials evaluation is considered as a crucial part in ESP materials selection since it provides testing them and knowing what is useful and what is not in order to avoid it when selecting for another time. Factors Influencing ESP Materials Selection ESP lectures must be well implemented in order to satisfy students’ needs. Some factors may influence such implementation positively or negatively. Even when teachers are not the responsible for doing so but they have to take into account such factors affecting their course so that they avoid them or try to find solutions if possible. Kennedy and Bolitho 36 suggest that the following factors must be taken into consideration whether the teacher is the course designer and materials provider or even when he is going only to select from what is available. Those factors are the use of English (whether within a community or an institution); available administrative facilities and available materials; learners’ age, level, motivation, and attitudes and prior views towards learning an ESP course; and teacher’ knowledge about vocabulary, specific forms and functions, and how to interrelate functions in order to get coherent texts. It should be stated that ESP is very helpful in teaching English to students of different disciplines. In this chapter, it has been focused on ESP as a discipline and emphasizes the importance of materials selection within ESP classrooms. First, 35 Hutchinson,T. and Waters, A. (1987). Hong Kong: Macmillan Publichers Limited 21ESP is defined as an approach to teaching English and that is based on students’ needs as we stated the developments that ESP has witnessed such as: register analysis and discourse analysis. Next, the role of ESP materials was explored in teaching the four skills, then in teaching vocabulary content and grammar rules. After that, the difference between authenticity and simplicity was established. Moreover, authentic materials are taken as they are in their original form, whereas simplified ones are modified in order to meet specific needs. Finally, the criteria of selecting appropriate materials were identified (accuracy, appropriacy, range, flexibility, and size), the characteristics of a motivating material were explained (credibility, up-to-date materials, and attractive materials), the method of evaluating materials (defining criteria, subjective analysis, objective analysis, and matching), the factors that may influence ESP materials selection (such as: the role of English, resources and administrative Constraints, the learner, and linguistic aspects, so that to take them into account) were described. Choosing ESP materials determines the running of the course and underlines content of the lesson. Good material should help teacher in organizing the course or what is more it can function as an introduction into the new learning techniques, and support teachers and learners in the process of learning. Materials are also a kind of teacher reflection, “they should truly reflect what you think and feel about the learning process.” Good material should be based on various interesting texts and activities providing a wide range of skills. Teachers determines which aspects of ESP learning will be focused on but one piece of material can serve for developing more than one skill, e.g. reading, listening, vocabulary etc. Teaching materials are tools that can be figuratively cut up into component pieces and then rearranged to suit the needs, abilities, and interests of the students in the course. Teachers should be aware of the fact if the material is suitable not only for a particular discipline and answers given course goals but also for teachers and learners themselves. Materials should also function as a link between already learnt ‘existing knowledge’ and new information. 21ESP materials Materials selection, adaptation, or writing is an important area in ESP teaching, representing a practical result of effective course development and providing students with materials that will equip them with the knowledge they will need in their future business life. One of the most important issues regarding ESP materials selection and/or writing is whether the materials selected should be solely or primarily subject specific and what the most appropriate ratio of general materials to subject-specific materials is. General materials focus on one’s general ability to communicate more effectively, while subject-specific materials focus on a particular job or industry (Ellis and Johnson, 1994). When carefully selected, both general and subject- specific materials will equip the students with the necessary skills and knowledge, but subject-specific materials nevertheless better cater for ESP learners’ specific needs. Consequently, ESP learners will very often feel more affinity for materials that they find relevant to their area of specialism. The use of subject-specific textbooks is also more in line with the realization that students are individuals with different needs, styles, and interests and with some central traits of cognitive theory, which, as Skela points out, are the following: - It focuses on purposeful learning; - The learner is seen as an active processor of information; - Learning is the process by which the learner tries to make sense of the information by imposing a meaningful interpretation or pattern on it; - One of the basic teaching techniques is problem-solving; - Recently it has been associated with a focus on deliberate acquisition of a language as a logical system; - The importance of carefully selected rules, which can provide an important shortcut in learning process. According to Prabhu, another important issue regarding materials is that they should be used as sources: “The fact that materials need to be used as sources rather than as pre-constructed courses should not be regarded as a weakness of task-based teaching; it can in fact be strength for any form of teaching”. 21As Ellis and Johnson emphasize, the choice of materials has a major impact on what happens in the course. Materials evaluation 21Materials evaluation is an important part of materials selection as well as the materials development process. In both cases, evaluation is primarily “concerned with relative merit. There is no absolute good or bad – only degrees of fitness for the required purpose”. An evaluation of printed ESP materials will thus above all serve to locate the materials that will best suit the learners’ needs with regard to their future or current work area. When no suitable printed materials are found, the evaluation of existing materials can serve as a springboard for development of in- house produced materials. In-house produced, tailor-made materials themselves should also be evaluated in order to provide the basis for their revision with a view to improving their quality and their suitability to the target learners’ needs. The evaluation process of either commercial or tailor-made materials is an ongoing process which is viewed differently by different writers. In her paper on selecting the most appropriate Business English textbook, Čepon stresses that textbook evaluation should be a multiphase process, in which textbooks are evaluated using various methodologies and ongoing information collection. She also outlines how the evolution process is viewed by some prominent writers, such as Hutchinson and Waters, McDonough and Shaw, Cunningsworth, and so on. According to Cunningsworth, the three different types of evaluation are pre-use evaluation, in-use evaluation, and post-use evaluation. The English in Logistics electronic literature for first-year students was fully implemented in the 2007/2008 academic year as part of an electronic classroom. The materials evaluation process followed a three-phase pattern: prior to their implementation the materials were evaluated by other language teachers at our faculty, during use they were evaluated by the teachers using them, and finally, at the end of the 2007/2008 academic year, they were evaluated by the students. To gain insight into the students’ opinion of the implementation of blended e-learning and the English in Logistics 1 electronic materials with regard to their success and progress in English language learning, I conducted a small study using a questionnaire on blended e-learning and the electronic literature for English in Logistics 1. This study was conducted with first-year university students that attended my courses during the 2007/2008 academic year. Seventy-seven students 21filled in the questionnaire. Seven questionnaires were incomplete, and the results of the remaining 70 questionnaires are discussed below. 2.2. Different ways of presenting vocabulary After having defined the different parts vocabulary consists of, it is time to talk about how to present new words and which different steps are included in this process. First of all, the teacher should give a concise definition of the new word. That means to give a definition describing the new word using only few words and not to use the word in context at this point. It is similar to a definition in a dictionary. Afterwards, the teacher should describe in detail what the word means and describe its qualities or even the appearance. In addition to that he should give examples of how to use the new word correctly in a sentence. Another way could be to illustrate the word on the board so that the students do have an image of the word in mind. The teacher can either draw a picture on the backboard or bring photos or the object itself to class. The teacher does also have the possibility to demonstrate in front of the class what the word`s meaning is by acting it out. He could even use it in context, so to speak in a whole well-chosen sentence or a story that describes best its meaning and also demonstrates how the word can be used. Another step could be that the teacher asks the students to find synonyms or antonyms (opposites) or the class can even try to find them together and collect them on the board. The last point is to translate the English word into German which is not a very good way because the students should use the English language as much as possible and learn to express themselves by using the English language. 21It is always important that the teacher pronounces the new word before he spells or writes it on the board. Firstly, there should be the “ science ” and then the “character”. The students should know how to pronounce and use the word in spoken language before they use it in written language and write whole texts using new words. The ways and techniques of the vocabulary presenting are important for the vocabulary acquisition. The teacher must take into account what item is presented because some techniques are more suitable for particular word types and some are less. Most of the researchers agree that the item “should not be presented in isolation and should not be learned rote memorization. It is important that new vocabulary items be presented in context rich enough to provide clue to meaning and that students be given multiple exposure to items they should learn.” I found a list of several ways how to present new vocabulary on the web guaranteed by the British Council and BBC World Service 37 and because I like it I decided to copy it here: - Illustration - This is very useful for more concrete words (dog, rain, tall) and for visual learners. It has its limits though, not all items can be drawn. - Mime - This lends itself particularly well to action verbs and it can be fun and memorable. - Synonyms/Antonyms/Gradable items - Using the words a students already knows can be effective for getting meaning across. - Definition - Make sure that it is clear (maybe check in a learner dictionary before the lesson if you are not confident). Remember to ask questions to check they have understood properly. - Translation - If you know the students' L1, then it is fast and efficient. Remember that not every word has a direct translation. - Context - Think of a clear context when the word is used and either describe it to the students or give them example sentences to clarify meaning further. But the techniques are not all. As Earl W. Stevick points out, the success in helping people to acquire language depends “not only on the techniques you use, 37 www.teachingenglish.org.uk 21but also on how you, and what you do, affect their attitudes toward the language and the people who use it.” This chapter is devoted to some exercises that can be used in English lesson. You can use everything what is included in vocabulary items for them, which is the meaning, form, spelling and others that I mentioned in the theoretical part. The Meaning and form There are many ways how to use the meaning and form of a word for teaching. I suggest several simple tasks here that I came up with. The tasks can be assigned for work in the lesson or as homework. - referring to the meaning - think up at least two synonyms of a verb book , a noun request and adjective boring - think up at least eight hyponyms of vegetable and fruit - think up (or look up in monolingual dictionary) a word having more than two different meanings and tell them to others in the class - find the word that appears in at least three unknown collocations and explain them to others - match the words or phrases that collocate with do or make: homework, mistakes, apologies, someone a favour, nothing, one’s best, the bed, a noise, somebody a service, an offer, a note, a job, a move, a joke of, history, something on your own responsibility, business, good time, a wash, fun of, the shopping - do usually mean to perform the activity or job - make usually means to create or produce something 38 - for following task, you will need a list of groups of words that are semantically relating to each other in some way: - find hypernymy and match the appropriate hyponymy to them - find holonymy and match the appropriate meronymy to them 38 Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary . India: Cambridge University Press, 2003 21- it is necessary to explain terms ‘hyponymy’, holonymy’ etc. - the types of required relations depend on the words that are given in the list - a task in pairs: one new vocabulary item is given to every pair. They should look it up in monolingual dictionary and then prepare themselves to describe it, either by oral explanation or any demonstration. - referring to the form - find or think up two or three words that can be joined with the prefixes non-, auto-, bio-, super-, pre-, uni-, sub- and de- and try to explain their meanings and meanings of the prefixes. Choose the correct negative form: - inpredictable X unpredictable weather - impersonal X inpersonal manner - illegal X inlegal action - nonregular X irregular activity. Revision and testing of vocabulary It is not needed to remind the importance of testing of learned stuff. It is a kind of motivation for learners to review vocabulary. If the pupils did not know that they could be tested they would have not be forced to learn. Thornbury points out that “vocabulary covered in the previous lesson should be tested at the beginning of the next one. If not, the chances of retaining the new vocabulary are greatly reduced.” 39 I can say from my own experience that most frequent used vocabulary testing is dictating of words in the mother tongue to be translated to the second language and vice versa. Other tasks that are widely applied for revision are matching, filling in the blank, multiple choice, use in sentences or guessing meaning from context. According to McCarten learning vocabulary is a challenge for learners, partly because of the size of the task, and partly because of the variety of vocabulary types to be learned, including single words, phrases, collocations, and strategic vocabulary, as well as grammatical patterning, idioms, and fixed expressions. 39 Thornbury, Scott: How to Teach Vocabulary . Harlow: Longman, 2002, p-130 21Richards and Nation list the different things learners need to know about a word before we can say that they have learned it. These include: 1. The meaning(s) of the word 2. Its spoken and written forms 3. What “word parts” it has (e.g., any prefix, suffix, and “root” form) 4. Its grammatical behavior (e.g., its word class, typical grammatical patterns it occurs in) 5. Its collocations 6. Its register 7. What associations it has (e.g., words that are similar or opposite in meaning) 8. What connotations it has 9. Its frequency To these we could add whether a word has a strategic use and if it has any special uses that are different in registers such as conversation or academic writing. So we can already see how important it is to use a corpus in order to give our learners all the right information they might need to master a word or phrase. It would be unrealistic to teach everything there is to know about a word the first time it is presented to students – and any such attempt would make for some very tedious lessons. Obviously we need to make choices about how much we teach on a first presentation. For example with the word like, in addition to its sound and spelling we might choose to teach only one of its meanings (to enjoy, find something to be pleasant), with one grammatical pat tern ( I like + singular or plural noun) and some associated vocabulary ( I like football/cartoons; I can’t stand game shows ). At a later date we can add other meanings such as to be similar to ( I have a car like that ) or add more grammati cal patterns such as like + to + verb ( I like to play tennis ). The choices we make are influenced by factors such as frequency, usefulness for the classroom, and “learnability” – how easy the item is to learn (and teach!). We can also take each type of knowledge from the list above and make students aware of its importance and usefulness in building up their knowledge of a 21word. For example, we can focus occasionally on how to express opposite or similar meanings for a set of vocabulary we are teaching, show students what is useful to learn about the forms of nouns or verbs, or how prefixes and suf fixes can help build vocabulary knowledge quickly. Giving students practice in manipulating these different areas of knowledge teaches useful learning strate gies they can apply to learning other vocabulary. We should also encourage students to look at learning the various meanings of an item of vocabulary as a gradual, incremental process, and show them how they can come back to a word they have previously “learned” to add more information about it, such as other meanings, or how to create an opposite meaning using a prefix. Another issue to consider is which vocabulary we want students to be able to use when they speak and write (their active or productive vocabulary) and which we want them to be able to recognize and understand but not nec essarily produce (their passive or receptive vocabulary). Students often feel frustrated that they can understand more than they can produce, but explaining this issue of active versus passive knowledge as a normal part of learning can be reassuring. When you assign vocabulary lists to learn, why not include some passive vocabulary items and discuss with students which items they need to learn “for understanding” and which they need to learn really well so that they can use them. (But be sure that in practice or testing activities, students are required to remember and use only the active vocabulary productively.) Additionally, even from the elementary level, it is important to include in vocabulary lessons not just single words, but also larger “chunks” such as collocations, phrases, or expressions, even whole sentences, as well as strategic vocabulary. By building up a stock of expressions as well as individual words, students can assemble the language they need to commu nicate more fluently. Establish that there are many ways to learn words and phrases and there are many factors affecting this process: personal feelings at the time; need to communicate; availability of a resource; context; language intuition and so on. Say that one of the most important factors for learning words is context and that you would like participants to explore it. 21There are different ways to know a word or phrase. However, the main distinction is between passive and active vocabulary – related to receptive and productive skills (or recognition and use) respectively. Average native speakers of English have 6 to 7 thousand words in their active vocabulary and about 25 thousand in their passive vocabulary. However, the current estimate of the English vocabulary resource is over one million words. Establish that the ratio between active and passive vocabulary with English learners is similar to that of native speakers and that learning vocabulary entails two interdependent objectives: - To increase passive vocabulary , the number of words students can recognize, understand and remember. - To increase active vocabulary , the number of words students can confidently use in speaking and writing. There are different types of vocabulary learning activities: - open/banked gap-filling exercises - comparing synonyms in context, - replacing nonsense words in a text - multiple matching - analysis of words and word combinations in a text - using word combinations and phrases - labelling and describing objects in a picture - using texts with thinking questions Teaching vocabulary should be based on context and teachers should focus on exploring the relationship between words, phrases and the meanings they convey in different contexts. It is possible to design simple vocabulary tasks using authentic texts accompanied with thinking questions or other task types. Two things you might cut down to make room for vocabulary work: a) Grammar . There is a tendency to devote too much time to grammar teaching, much of which should be transferred to vocabulary. b) Checking homework . Often half the lesson is wasted on going through exercises students have done for homework. Try … 21- just giving the answers, or writing them up on the board; students self-check and then respond only if there is a problem; - giving them five minutes to check through the answers in pairs, asking you only if there is a problem; - taking in their homework to check at home (obviously you can’t do this every time, too time-consuming, but occasionally you can, and it saves time in class). There are some assumptions that lead us to teach vocabulary not very efficiently, and which are not in fact true. Let’s look at some of these. 1. You shouldn’t translate new words into L1. Use other means as well - pictures, mime, explanations, examples – but don’t feel guilty about clarifying by means of the L1. And of course later review should be mainly in English: but for the first encounter, L1 can be really helpful. 2. It’s more important to teach reading strategies than vocabulary. Reading strategies are no substitute for knowing vocabulary. Learning how to skim, scan, infer from context etc., is of surprisingly limited value in reading comprehension when students don’t know enough vocabulary. So it’s not worth spending too much time practicing reading strategies: make students aware of them, certainly, but it’ll be much more helpful to them if you spend most of your time teaching and reviewing vocabulary. 3. Vocabulary should always be taught and reviewed in (sentence or longer) context. Not always. There’s a place for teaching and review of single items on their own. And often putting a new word into a brief phrase is just as helpful as putting it into a full sentence. Both these, of course, are much quicker than full-context activities. Bottom line: vocabulary should be taught both within contexts and as single, decontextualized, items. 4. Students c a n always guess meanings from context. They usually can’t. Not just because they’re untrained, and not just because the texts are too difficult, but simply because research shows that even educated native speakers often can’t guess a word from context correctly. Only in the 21minority of cases does the surrounding context make the meaning of an unknown word clear. So don’t waste time pushing students to infer words in class: just tell them what they mean. (That doesn’t mean that inferring from context is useless – students will use it in their own independent reading – only that it’s not a very efficient way to teach new words in class). 5. It’s enough to expose a learner three or four times to a new word for them to learn it. This isn’t enough. According to research, a learner will only master a new item if he or she gets ten or more opportunities to review (some say as much as 20). So it’s important to review new items you taught at the end of the same lesson, and again in the next lesson; but then remember that you’ll need to come back to them after a week, and again later. Of course you won’t have time to review every single item ten or more times, but remind students to refresh their memories every now and then (see Strategies below) . Strategies Here are some useful strategies for teaching vocabulary without adding extra work and time, illustrated by practical examples. 1. Make students responsible. - Share with students why they need to learn a lot of vocabulary: it’s probably the most important aspect of language that they need to know. - Tell students that they’ll need to work on vocabulary expansion themselves outside the lessons: there’s simply no time during lessons to teach them all the vocabulary they need (some ideas in the next section). - Tell students to keep vocabulary/dictionary notebooks (could be on smartphones or iPods) to keep a record of new vocabulary learnt. - Give students five minutes during class to check through their vocabulary notebooks and remind themselves of things they’ve learnt. - Make opportunities for students to share their personal strategies for learning and reviewing new vocabulary. 212.3. Methods and principles of using the new course book “SCALE UP” The Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan PD-1875 as of 10 December 2012, “On Measures on Further Improvement of Teaching of Foreign Languages”, was the essence of the country’s reforms in the field of foreign language learning. Since the adoption of the system-generating decree all the work in this area has been intensified and major reforms in modernization of teaching foreign languages at all levels of continuous education have started. According to the targets set by the Government of the Republic, new State Educational Standards, based on international experience – CEFR were adopted. In 2013, on the initiative of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan the work on developing a set of learning materials for foreign languages meeting international requirements has been launched. A group of English language teachers from all over the Republic developed truly innovative language learning manual that meets newly established requirements. “Scale Up” is B2 level academic language course designed to meet the communication needs of Undergraduate, English for Specific Purposes students as well as independent academic learners in Uzbekistan. B2 level Course book consists of three courses to encourage undergraduate students for continuous learning and involve in academic life. Rich selection of motivating and informative, authentic and semi-authentic texts to improve both reading and listening skills with variety topics are presented in themed topics. Interactive activities focus on learners’ «can do» statements and follow the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference 21requirements. Meaningful topics and materials are designed so that they enhance students’ horizons and provide a thought-provoking, purposeful approach to learn English, including autonomous learning. Each lesson starts with colorful lead-in activity shifting students focus on new topic. Lead-in activity is followed by listening and speaking and then grammar, reading, writing activities respectively. Reading and listening have pre-, while-, post-activities which allow students practice their receptive skills. In addition to language practice, users are provided with interesting facts in ‘Did you know...’ section, which carries both informative and sobering effects. A complete package consists of ‘Student’s Book’ and ‘Workbook’ for students, with ‘Teacher’s Book’ designed for teachers. Audio materials are offered in CDs, separately for Student’s Book and Workbook. Student’s Book • For classroom use • Topic based lessons with communicative exercises • CD with tracks Workbook • Lesson by lesson revision and practice • CD with tracks Teacher’s Book • Full teaching notes and ideas for each lesson • Additional materials • Instructions for grouping • Answer keys Scale Up is going to be implemented from September 2015 in all non- philological universities of the republic of Uzbekistan. As it is stated above, it is created and designed to meet the requirements of State Educational Standards. According to it, this course book is aimed to take students’ English proficiency to B2 level. Most teachers of ESP may have some questions about how to use this course book and how to advance students’ level to B2. 21Teachers’ book is right there to help them to get answers to the questions above. In this book each lesson plan is ready to be delivered, assisting you in creating a lively and friendly learning atmosphere. Teaching strategies All the strategies employed in Scale Up aim to promote learning by focusing on personal engagement, both intellectual and emotional. This helps ensure that we never lose sight of meaning as the key ingredient in effective language learning. Accessible topics and tasks Each unit is built around a set of three related topics followed by review. They provide an interesting and wide-ranging selection of subjects about which most students have something to say. The tasks in Scale Up have been designed to set up opportunities for genuine communicative exchanges. Interaction Patterns The lessons contain a wide range of practical tasks. All lessons are student centered as opposed to teacher-oriented and therefore involve a lot of group work and pair work. In the course lessons students are encouraged to share their ideas, experience and provide support to each other. Therefore, different types of interaction are used during the lessons: Lead-in photos encourage students to exchange their perception of photos with the whole group; In small group work students share their ideas with each other and come to a general agreement; In pairs students discuss things together and generate ideas; Starter/Lead-in All lessons begin with ‘Starter’ or ‘Lead-in’. Starters often serve as energizers to focus students’ attention on the photos, quotations and sayings of famous people leading them into the topic. Grouping techniques Students can be grouped according to the shape /colours /numbers /letters/ birthdates and so on. For example, in order to form a pair, ask them to line - 21up according to their birthdays or months. When students stand in a line you can pair them up calling one from the beginning of the line and one from the ending of the line. This technique is also a good icebreaking activity which can be used at the beginning of the lesson. Possible answers In some lessons possible answers are suggested to the questions and tasks for your convenience. Please note that these answers are possible but there may be other options as well. ‘All answers are acceptable’ statement shows the acceptability of students’ diverse ideas. Eliciting We also encourage you to elicit as much from your students as possible as opposed to the lecturing. We believe that students are knowledgeable and experienced and we value their contributions and ideas. Personalizing This technique is very productive helping students understand a certain notion by feeling the sample through them. The course is based on communicative approach of Learning, Teaching, and Assessing. Learning Strategy: Communicative cognitive system of learning within the real life. Teaching Strategy: Learner Centered, real cognitive steps within the real life of the students and the specialty: Step 1: Key words of the lesson and their use in students’ life within the specialty. Step 2: Listening materials. While you are discussing the listening materials you will work on Speaking. Step 3: Please follow the rules and find the reading materials connected with the listening materials and the key words. Step 4: Reflection: Ask students to write what they have learned about the key words, their usage in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Techniques: Copy right. You can check the level and copyright of your students written assignments through the websites as 21www.turnitin.com, www.grammarly.com. If you face to some of the following problems, there are some suggestions to solve them: Follow the B2 level and never come down as this is up to YOU and students’ orientation to SCALE UP at this level. 40 40 www.journal.fledu.uz 21Conclusion Vocabulary is an important part of the English teaching process. It is supposed to be a very effective communicative device as it carries the highest level of importance within peoples’ verbal interaction. However, language itself is not only individual lexemes put together, but it is necessary to follow a set of grammar rules to assure correct comprehension of speaker’s intention. Therefore, vocabulary together with grammar rules acquisition plays significant role in foreign language teaching. This piece of work aims to highlight the importance of vocabulary learning as an essential part in foreign language learning. Although it has been neglected for many decades, during the 80s it became a ‘hot’ topic for researchers. Lexical knowledge is central to communicative competence and to the acquisition of a second/foreign language and a lack of vocabulary knowledge is an obstacle to learning. An attempt is made to review the trends in the area of teaching vocabulary through various techniques ESL/EFL teachers use when teaching. Before presenting the meaning or form of vocabulary items, teachers need to notice the type of the vocabulary, the students’ level and characteristics, and also the value of the techniques for the learners. In other words, students' age, level of education as well as English proficiency...etc. May affect their learning, so teachers need to be aware of these differences when applying their teaching techniques. In this qualification work, I summarize important research on the impotence of vocabulary and explaining many techniques used by English teachers when teaching English, as well as my own personal view of these issues. In my qualification work I concerned with ´Vocabulary as a base of acquiring system´ (ESP). In the theoretical part I introduced the theoretical background concerning ESP and mentioned some characteristic features closely connected with process of ESP learning. I drew the special attention to organizing ESP course and selecting material as an important phase to fulfill its demands and to achieve 21satisfying goals in ESP process of learning. I also pointed out some differences between the role of ´ESP´ and ´General English´ teacher and stressed the importance and possible ways of evaluation. I mentioned ´learning centred approach´ based on learners´ needs, expectations and learners´ way of learning language. They are mainly learners´ needs that must be met rather than teachers´ ones and it depends on learning strategies and teachers´ attitude to ESP course that is why a motivation was emphasized as a necessary part of a learning process as well. Based on a brief overview of some basic characteristics of ESP and different writers’ views on materials selection and/or writing in ESP, it can be concluded that there are no absolute criteria to rely on when selecting teaching/learning materials and deciding whether to use commercial textbooks or in-house produced materials. Commercial materials, according to Ellis and Johnson, are books aiming “to provide material for use at each stage of the lesson”; whereas in-house produced materials serve the same purpose but are prepared by ESP teachers themselves. A commonly accepted view on the decision about materials is that ESP teachers should primarily strive to provide students with materials that will equip them with the English language knowledge they will need in their working environment. To meet this end they should preferably select suitable materials from the existing printed textbooks and resort to writing materials only when they have no other options. In the case of well-established disciplines, such as business, banking, accounting, and so on, ESP teachers most often can act in line with this commonly accepted view because there is a rich bank of commercial general business and subject-specific textbooks. This is not the case with some younger subject areas such as logistics, for which there are only a few or no subject specific textbooks available. To provide students with the materials that will cater for their specific needs, many ESP teachers are thus faced with the challenge of writing tailor-made materials. In the third chapter of the work I aimed at evaluating the available course book in the vocational education of Uzbekistan. I looked through the “English B1” 21course book designed by group of specialists for the colleges and academic lyceums of Uzbekistan. According to our research findings “English B1” course book is a new exemplary ready-made material for the education system of our country. The course book is a pioneer of ESP materials so far and thus there are some flaws and drawbacks in it. Among the most mentioned flaws of the course book we may mentioned the fact that there are few or almost no content that is relevant to the specialties taught at vocational colleges in Uzbekistan. However, as the results of the study suggest the course book has its own achievements in terms of skills integration, design, layout and content. Based on the evaluation of the course book we may conclude that no matter what course books are available for ESP teachers there are still a lot of things to do for them in order to prepare tailor made materials. In conclusion, it should be stressed that, regardless of the amount of suitable quality readily available textbooks, ESP teachers can always opt for designing tailor-made, subject-specific materials, which can be used in combination with readily available textbooks or on their own. In both cases, when prepared well, tailor-made subject specific materials will best fit the students’ needs and specific subject areas, and thus enhance their motivation for learning. At the same time, although it is very demanding and time-consuming, writing materials also allow the teacher to be actively involved in developing and teaching courses. 21References 1. Karimov I. A.
