Introduction Actuality of the qualification paper . Our Republic was faced with the necessity of creating new legislation corresponding with new realities, with the conditions of Independence after the Independence was proclaimed and the Parliament coped with this task, there have been adopted new Laws and new Resolutions. Under the guidance of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, special attention is paid to the formation of harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern thinking generation, able to take responsibility for the fate of the Homeland. Therefore , the task of education, the task of rising up a new generation who is capable of national renaissance will remain the prerogative of the state and constitute a priority. At present great importance is attached to the study and teaching of foreign languages. The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve system of foreign languages teaching” dated from 10 December 2012 1 ; the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013; The resolution No 4947 of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017 - 2021 years ” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution“. English nowadays is acknowledged as an international language because many people from different countries use it as a means of communication. That’s why English is taught from elementary school level. English has two basic majors, they are skills and component. The basic skills of English learning are listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Most students do not able to master all four skills and usually they have a lot of problems with writing and speaking. Students usually are not able to analyze, do synthesis and summarize the information in writing or oral form. One of the approaches that emphasizes the process and content of writing and speaking, which was discovered by Dewey, is a context approach. The context approach is a learning philosophy that emphasizes students’ interests and experiences. The contextual teaching and learning was developed by the Washington State Consortium.The context approach is considered to be used in teaching English, especially in teaching productive skills 2 . Regarding this, Amasavo stated that writing with context can make students able to develop analysis when they write a reasonable paragraph and make the readers give their expectation easier. In other words, if the students know what to write, what the reader expects from the text, and which parts of the language system that are relevant to the particular task in a given context, then they will be able to develop their analysis in writing a reasonable paragraph and have a good chance to succeed in it. The aim of the research work is to establish advantages of context approach implementation in teaching foreign languages. The tasks of the research work are the following: -to expand and update the definition of the term “context”. -to reveal the characteristic features of linguistic context. -to analyze the theoretical basis of context approach implementation in teaching - foreign language; 2 Amosova N.N. -to define the main strategies and characteristics of context approach; -to identify benefits of using of context approach in teaching productive skills -to consider the significance role of context based-learning in EFL classes. -to present the advantages of context based-learning in learning English as a second language. The object of the qualification paper is context based learning in EFL classes and context approach in teaching foreign languages. In our work we have used the following methodological basis : a method of the description, comparison, analysis, method of observation. The Scientific novelty of the qualification paper. Implementation of Context approach in teaching English productive skills is considered in this research. Advantages of using Context approach was identified and analyzed. The Theoretical significance of the qualification paper lies in the fact that it provides better understanding about theoretical framework for other researchers who are interested in conducting research on advantages of using context approach in teaching English. The practical significance of the qualification paper is determined by the possibility to give contribution in finding more effective methods of teaching writing and speaking in the senior grades. The structure of the work . Research work consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and references. CHAPTER I. Context as main stage of learning 1.1 Theoretical notions of context Learning language is a long way, it is a hard process and it demands effort 5

and patience from learners. In most cases learners know a new word a phrase in the texts but there are some barriers which are difficult to overcome. Different problems may detract learners from expressing their own ideas. Firstly, it may occur due to the learners’ shyness or lack of self confidence. Learners do not want to appear foolish in public, especially in communicative classes where errors like mispronounce, misuse a word or fail to understand something that somebody said are inevitable. Another problem is reluctance or lack of motivation . Subsequently, context help them to overcome problems like that. Moreover, teaching and learning English in context demands a lot of effort from not only teachers but also students. We know that a lot of scholars give different definitions to the context. The notion of context has come to the fore in recent years both in the study and teaching of language. Despite the great importance attached to the concept and the number and variety of definitions provided, the lack of a comprehensive and workable definition based on systematic analysis has become increasingly apparent. There is a great amount of different definitions of the term “context”. Many scientists and researchers have been working upon this problem for many years. If try to combine those numerous definitions by different authors, we can get a short formula given by Stalnaker, “Context is a fragment of the text minus the determined unit” 3 . The fragment of the text must include the determined unit and constitute its right and left environment. Moreover that fragment must be a necessary and sufficient condition to determine the meaning and should not contradict to the general sense of the text. statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect: e.g., You have misinterpreted my remark because you took it out of context; 2.the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation 4 , etc. Origin: contextus a joining together, scheme, structure, equiv. to contex(ere) to join by weaving (con- con- + texere to plait, weave) + -tus suffix of v. action; cf. text. So context is defined as the aggregate of linguistic, situational, social and cultural variables that surround linguistic units such as texts, discourses, utterances, words, morphemes, phonemes, sounds, and distinctive features. The most detailed and consistent definition of the term “context” is considered to be given by Amosova N.N. In her work “ English Contextology” she defines context as the minimal stretch of speech determining each individual meaning of the word, its immediate syntactical environment. This is not to imply that polysemantic words have meanings only in the context. The semantic structure of the word has an objective existence as a dialectical entity which embodies dialectical permanency and variability. The context individualizes the meanings, brings them out. It is in this sense that we say that meaning is determined by context. According to Prof. Amosova, the word the meaning of which is to be realized is called the semantic dependant. In other words, context is the connection of the word with its indicator, which is either in direct or indirect syntactical connection with the actualized word. The semantic indicator is the element of the same syntactical unit which denotes the appropriate meaning of the word in a given context . Some linguists do not distinguish speech situation (immediate extra-lingual circumstances under which the utterance takes place) from context. It is clear that the whole utterance, or a phrase, or a word and the conditions of its usage do not influence on choosing the necessary part of the meaning scope of a polysemantic word is in a linear way. That's why we can find a huge amount of different typologies and classifications of context in literature. All of them appeared against the aims and tasks of each researcher. Thus they distinguish micro- and macro-context, where micro-context is the minimal environment of the unit plus additional encoding in form of associations, connotations, etc., while macro-context is the unit's environment which helps to define its function in the text in general 5 . They say also there explicit verbal/non-verbal and implicit contexts. According to the functional principle, enabling, reducing, compensative and other types of context can be distinguished. Our task does not include the full research of the complicated problem of context. Thus we confine ourselves with the description of types of context according to the Amosova's theory. According to her, context is a notion used in the language sciences (linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, semiotics, etc.) in two main ways, namely as linguistic context and non-linguistic context. Linguistic context refers to surrounding text or talk of an expression (word, sentence, conversational turn, speech act, etc.). The idea is that verbal context influences the way we understand the expression. Since much contemporary linguistics takes texts, discourses or conversations as its object of analysis, the modern study of 'verbal context' takes place in terms of the analysis of discourse structures and their mutual relationships, for instance the coherence relation between words, phrases and sentences 6 . Before talking about main types of the linguistic context it is important to mention about such notion as context clues. Text book writers usually know when they must use a word that will be new to their readers. So they often include other words or phrases to help with the understanding of the new word. referred to as context clues. They are built into the sentences around the difficult word. If you become more aware of the words around the difficult words you encounter in your reading, you will save yourself many trips to the dictionary. You will be able to make logical guesses about the meanings of many words. There are four common types of context clues. Definition - the word is defined directly and clearly in the sentence in which it appears. E.g., The arbitrator, the neutral person chosen to settle the dispute, arrived at her decision. Antonym (or contrast) - often signaled by the words whereas, unlike, or as opposed to. E.g., Unlike Jamaal's room, which was immaculate, Jeffrey's room was very messy. Whereas Melissa is quite lithe, her sister is clumsy and awkward. Synonym (or restatement) - other words are used in the sentence with similar meanings. E.g., The slender woman was so thin her clothes were too big on her. Inference - word meanings are not directly described, but need to be inferred from the context. E.g., Walt's pugnacious behavior made his opponent back down. The man gigged the large fish, but he needed his friend to enlarge the hole to drag it out of the frigid water. Linguistic context is the set of suitable defined linguistic units that co-occur with a given linguistic unit within a given text. The two more or less universally recognized main types of linguistic contexts which serve to determine individual meanings of words are the lexical context and the grammatical context. These types are differentiated depending on whether the lexical or the grammatical aspect is predominant in determining the meaning. According to prof. N.N.Amosova, when indication comes from the lexical meaning of the indicator it is a case of lexical context . The author subdivides this type of context into that of the first degree and that of the second degree. The contextual elements of lexical context of the first degree have a direct (immediate) syntactical connection between them. Lexical context can be variable: the indicator may be varied without affecting the semantic content of the dependent word. If, in 9

the unit of the context, only one certain indicator realizes a particular meaning of the dependant, then the context is constant. A phraseological unit is a unit of constant context. In lexical contexts of primary importance are the lexical groups combined with the polysemantic word under consideration. This can be illustrated by analyzing different lexical contexts in which polysemantic words, e.g. heavy or take, are used. The adjective heavy in isolation is understood as meaning 'of great weight, weighty' (heavy load, a heavy table, etc.). When combined with the lexical group of words denoting natural phenomena such as wind, storm, snow, etc., it means 'striking, falling with force, abundant' as can be seen from the contexts, e.g. heavy rain, wind, snow, storm, etc. In combination with the words industry, arms, artillery and the like, heavy has the meaning 'the larger kind of something' as in heavy industry, heavy artillery, etc. The verb “take” in isolation has primarily the meaning 'lay hold of with the hands, grasp, seize', etc. When combined with the lexical group of words denoting some means of transportation (e.g. to take the tram, the bus, the train', etc.) it acquires the meaning synonymous with the meaning of the verb go 7 . It can be easily observed that the main factor in bringing out this or that individual meaning of the words heavy and take is the lexical group with which the word in question is combined. This can be also proved by the fact that when we want to describe the individual meaning of a polysemantic word, we find it sufficient to use this word in combination with some members of such lexical groups. To describe but a few meanings of the word handsome, for example, it is sufficient to combine it with the following words--a) man, person, b) size, reward, sum. The meanings 'good looking' and 'considerable, ample' are adequately illustrated by the contexts. The meanings determined by lexical contexts are sometimes referred to as lexically (or phraseologically) bound meanings what implies that such meanings are to be found only in certain lexical contexts.Some linguists go so far as to assert that 7 Amosova N.N. word-meaning in general can be analyzed through its collocability with other words. They hold the view that if we know all the possible collocations (or word- groups) into which a polysemantic word can enter, we know all its meanings. Thus, the meanings of the adjective heavy, for instance, may be analyzed through its collocability with the words weight, safe, table; snow, wind, rain; industry, artillery, etc. The meaning at the level of lexical contexts is sometimes described as meaning by collocation. Context(n) contextual (adj) that which occurs before and/or after a word, a phrase or even a longer utterance or a text. The context often helps in understanding the particular meaning of the word, phrase, etc. For example, the wordloud inloud music is usually understood as meaning “noisy” whereas inatiewith a loud patternit is understood as “unpleasantly colourful”. Thecontext may also be the broader social situation in which a linguistic itemis used. For example, in ordinary usage, spinster refers to an older unmarried woman but in a legal context it refers to any unmarried woman. Content word context of situation n the linguistic and situational context in which a word, utterance or text occurs. The meaning of utterances, etc., is determined not only by the literal meaning of the words used but by the context or situation in which they occur. Communication occurring in a context that offers help to comprehension through such things as the situation and setting, visual clues, gestures andactions. In such a situation the learner can make more use of top –down processingto infer meanings. At the same time the speaker may communicate less explicitly since much of the meaning is known from thecontext. This can be compared withcontext-reduced language,in which there are few contextual clues to support comprehension and which relies therefore on linguistic elaboration. The distinction between context reduced and context-embedded language has been used in explaining the nature of instruction in academic subjects in formal school contexts and the role of background knowledge in communication. 11

There was, in the philosophy of language in the 1970s, a lot of ink spilled in debating just what pragmatics was, and where the line was to be drawn between semantics and pragmatics 8 . As is usual with such border disputes, it was often unclear what the question was, but there seemed to be some substantive issues in the vicinity, perhaps a tangle of issues about the nature of linguistic competence, its role in communicative practices, and the relation between language and thought mixed in with methodological questions about the most fruitful direction for linguistic research to take. In the thirty years since then, the terrain has changed a lot, in many ways. Sophisticated theories of indexical semantics have provided formal models of a certain kind of context sensitivity. Context and context change, presupposition and Grice an implicature have been in corporated into a range of different formal semantic/pragmatic theories that model whole discourses and the way they evolve. The general account of discourse took a dynamic turn, and this complicated the questions about the relation between semantics and pragmatics. Should the way contexts evolve in a conversation be incorporated into semantics? Detailed theories about the way the semantic properties of expressions interact with what the users of those expressions bring to the situations in which they are used have proliferated, but despite all of the progress, the border disputes are as heated, and the under lying foundational questions are as unclear, as they were when theorizing about context was just beginning. In a way, this is not surprising, since as theories are developed and applied to a widening range of linguistic phenomena, the basis for drawing lines keeps changing, and as theories are developed in increasing detail, it is easy for fundamental questions about the relation between languages and what they are used to do to get lost in the details 9 . involved in current pragmatic theorizing, notions that have their origins in the early attempts to think systematically about pragmatics. My main aim in this first chapter is to get clearer about the relations between two different theoretical notions of context that have played a role in pragmatic theory, and to bring out some tensionsbetween them. My title says three notions of context, but the first is the informal target notion, the intuitive idea of a context: the thing one gets quoted out of, or that one provides some of when one sets the stage for a report, a discussion or a deliberation. It is worth taking a quick look at the intuitive notion or notions of context before looking at the formal objects that theory uses to explain some of the phenomena that we describe in terms of these intuitive notions.It is natural to think of a speech context as the concrete situation in which a conversation takes place, a situation with a more or less definite group of participants with certain beliefs, including beliefs about what the others know and believe, and certain interests and purposes, both common interests and purposes, and interests and purposes that are recognized to diverge. Contexts, in the ordinary sense, evolve in the course of a conversational exchange, but retain their identity 10 . We are in a sense, in the same context when I ask you a question as when you give the answer, even though a different person is speaking, and even though beliefs about each other and about the subject matter of the conversation are changing as we speak. It seems reasonable to take a context, in the ordinary sense, as situation that is intelligible independently of any institutional linguistic practice. A context is not defined by the constitutive rules of some language game; it is enough that a group of people is in some common setting, with some recognition of each other’s presence. The constitutive rules of an institutional linguistic practice may appeal to facts about the setting in which speech takes place, and the beliefs of the members ofthe group in terms of which the context is defined may include beliefs about the rules of a linguistic practice. essentially any rules or conventions. It is not just linguistic actions, but actions of any kind that take place in a context. Features of a context might be relevant in at least two different ways to the understanding of what is going on in a conversation: first, the context is a resource that the participants might use to achieve their communicative purposes: they can make what they say or mean depend on features of the context, so long as the relevant information is available to the addressee. Second, the context, since it includes the beliefs, plans and purposes of the participants, is what speech acts act upon; it is their point to change certain features of the context. To account for the first of these two roles, a theoretical notion of context should identify the features of the setting in which speech takes place that semantic rules should help to sharpen our understanding of the intended effects of speech acts. A notion of context playing these two roles will be involved both in an account of what language is used to do, and in an account of the mechanisms it uses to do it. The notion of a “context” is at the same time a simple and yet far- reaching one. It provides framework in which to describe the diversity of approaches and methods in language teaching and their more specific and local interpretations. Definitions of context also connect paradigms in educational research to their foundations and derivations in sociology and anthropology. 1.2 A Historical View and the Importance of Context in language learning Foreign language instruction in the U.S. evolved historically from an emphasis on readingand writing in the 18 th and 19 th centuries to a focus on using languages for real-life, interactive purposes in the 21 st century. Approaches to language instruction have been influenced by research in psychology, linguistics, and, more recently, in second language acquisition (SLA),. In the past several decades, language instruction in the U.S. has also been significantly influenced by (1) the concept of assessing and teaching for language proficiency and (2) student standards published at the national level for foreign languages and English as a Second Language, both of which have served as an impetus for contextualized 14

language instruction 11 . The current goal of communicative language teaching can only be realized if instruction occurs within meaningful contexts. As pointed out in the Teacher’s Handbook Preface, context refers to the “interrelated conditions in which something exists or occurs”. We might think of it as those events or circumstances that come before or after or surround a communication between or amongpeople. Context includes the setting, topic, situation, purpose, actors, roles, cultural assumptions, goals, and motivation that are involved in the communication. It consists of all the features of the world outside the classroom that allow people to use and interpret language 12 . For our purposes as language teachers, context refers to the degree to which meaning and situations from the world outside the classroom are present in an instructional approach, method, orclassroom activity, thus engaging learners in constructing meaning and in using L2 to communicate and acquire new information.For decades, elementary school teachers have been teaching foreign language within the context of academic subject areas, e.g., mathematics, geography, science, and through techniques such as storytelling, games, and role playing. However, at secondary and post-secondary levels of instruction, linguistic form has traditionally been separated from context, such as academic content and culture, as students in higher language levels become cognitively able to analyze linguistic forms. Furthermore, earlier methods of language instruction, advocated teaching language the separate skills of listening, speaking, reading, or writing, and some suggested a discretepoint approach to the teaching of grammar, which focused on the learning of isolated grammar rules. Unfortunately, many teachers are still influenced by outdated methods and allow their instruction to be driven by a textbook that is organized around a grammatical syllabus and devoid of stimulating content. related to other disciplines and to the world at large, current research that advocates a socio-cultural approach to language learning and teaching, and the advances in modern technology continue to serve as catalysts in placing context and meaning into the forefront of language teaching. In this chapter, you will see the history of the profession unfold, and you will explore how methods, perspectives about language learning, assessment, and standards have led to a new view of language learning as meaningful, purposeful, and accomplished through contextualizedpractice. The earliest method, used in the teaching of Latin and Greek, was the Grammar-Translation (G-T) method, which focused on translation of printed texts, learning of grammatical rules, and memorization of bilingual word lists 13 . Context played no role in this teaching method, except to help explain the translation. The Direct Method appeared in reaction to G-T and its emphasis was on teaching speaking through visuals, exclusive use of the Target Language (TL), and inductive teaching in which students subconsciously “pick up” grammar rules and guess meaning within context. The Audio-lingual Method (ALM), which brought a new emphasis to listening and speaking, advocated teaching the oral skills by means of stimulus-response learning: repetition, dialogue memorization, and manipulation of grammatical pattern drills. Therefore, speaking in the ALM mode usually meant repeating after the teacher, reciting memorized dialogue, corresponding to a mechanical drill, as in the following example of a person- number substitution drill taken from a 1969 French I ALM textbook, with English translations in parentheses: Teacher: Voustravaillez tout le temps. You will notice the lack of context in such a drill—there is little apparent meaning nor a situation in the world outside the classroom where one would interact in this way. Since the language was presented in dialogues, drills typically used in the ALM method deceptively appeared to be contextualized. In actuality, students can complete a mechanical drill successfully by simply following the pattern, without even knowing the meaning of what is being said. With the ALM method, unfortunately, learners were seldom exposed to meaningful, contextualized input and were unable to transfer the memorized material into spontaneous communication 14 . Of importance, however, is that the ALM methodology dominated language teaching in the 1950s and 1960s, primarily because large numbers of pre- and in-service teachers were trained and re-trained in summer institutes funded by the National Defense Education Act (NDEA). Many teachers today still use ALM-based teaching strategies.The cognitive approaches, first proposed in the 1960s, promoted more meaningful language use and creativity. This cognitive view was based largely on Chomsky’s claims that an individual’s linguistic knowledge does not reflect conditioned behavior but rather the ability to create an infinite number of novel responses. In this theoretical framework, learners must understand the rules of the language before they can be expected to perform or use the language. However, although the cognitive approaches advocate creative language practice, usually related to varied contexts, there is often little time left for communicative language use in real-world contexts due to extensive discussion about grammar rules in either a deductive or an inductive mode and mechanical practice.The proficiency framework assesses language ability in terms of four interrelated criteria: (1) global tasks or functions: linguistic tasks, such as 14 Dijk, van T.A. asking for information, narrating and describing past events, and expressing opinions; (2) contexts/content areas:the sets of circumstances, linguistic or situational, in which these tasks are performed and the topics that relate to these contexts (e.g., context—in a restaurant in Mexico; content—ordering a meal); (3) the accuracy with which the tasks are performed: the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, sociolinguistic appropriateness or acceptability of what is being said within a certain setting, and the use of appropriate strategies for discourse management; and (4) the oral text type that results from the performance of the tasks: discrete words and phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or extended discourse. Language practice that is contextualized and reflects real-world use forms the foundation for an approach that seeks to develop proficiency 15 .The proficiency framework assesses language ability in terms of global tasks or functions, contexts/content areas, accuracy, and oral text type. It should be noted that students require copious amounts of practice in using the target language, but this practice must be meaningful and engaging for student.A top-down approach to language instruction resists reducing language to word lists,verb conjugations, discrete grammar points, or isolated linguistic elements. In this approach, learners are presented with a “whole” text (e.g., story, poem, song, tape-recorded listening selection), are guided hrough comprehending its main ideas, explore these ideas through interaction with others, and then focus on specific details and/or linguistic structures (e.g., vocabulary, grammar). Learners manipulate language to communicate thoughts using higher-level skills (e.g., relating knowledge from several areas, using known ideas to create new ones, generalizing from facts, predicting, drawing conclusions) before attending to discrete language structures with the use of lower-level skills (e.g., recognizing, identifying, recalling, explaining, observing, interpreting).The purpose of top-down learning is to give the student a clear and whole picture of how the words and structures they must learn are contained in a context that makes these elements meaningful through the 15 Dijk, van T.A. overall message. This, in turn, allows for strategic guessing, similar to the process one uses to identify unfamiliar elements in L1. In this type of learning, meaning is constructed from the whole and does not represent a linear process. Within the thematic unit being taught, the teacher might present a text to the class for the purpose of helping learners understand its meaning while discussing it. This text can be a story, an authentic taped conversation or short reading, a piece of realia(an object from the target culture such as a postcard, a letter, an invitation, etc.), or any verbal input given by the teacher. For example, in a chapter dealing with travel, learners might (1) listen to a public service announcement that gives advice to travelers, (2) read an advertisement for taking a cruise, or (3) listen to their teacher tell a story about a family vacation. If the vocabulary and grammar have been appropriately matched to the theme, then these initial authentic contexts contain examples of structures and words used naturally. We may often hear someone use a quotation—for example, in defense of a political opinion or a religious viewpoint—only to hear someone else counter But that’s not really what he (the original speaker) meant! You’ve taken it completely out of context!” W also become frustrated when something we have said is taken out of context, feeling as though we have been misquoted. We know intrinsically that to ignore the original context of an utterance can misrepresent the speaker’s intentions. Experiences like these tell us that context can affect an utterance’s meaning. One of the jobs of pragmaticists is investigate the relationship between context and meaning. In order to investigate this relationship, we need a way to talk about language incontext. Pragmaticists therefore distinguish between sentences and utterances. A sentence is a phrasal expression that expresses some (complete) idea. Consider a sentence like” There is a platypus in the bathtub”. We know many things about this sentence: it is a sentence of English; it contains seven words; it has a certain syntactic structure; and so on. However, while we are able to describe such properties of a sentence, sentences are abstract entities. Whenever a sentence is used, though—whenever a person speaks (or signs) it—there 19

has been an utterance of the sentence. An utterance is not an abstraction. It is an event, something that happens. Read the sentence “There is a platypus in the bathtub out loud”. Now, ask the next person you see to do the same thing. If you have followed these instructions, then you have just heard two utterances, but there is only one sentence. Likewise, if a theater company puts on a play and performs it ten times, the play will open with the same sentence each time, but there will be ten different utterances. There are many ways in which context can affect the meaning of an utterance. (1)”He is there now “. The above sentence, heard or read out of context, is difficult to interpret, because it includes many deictic or “place holder” words that don’t inherently refer to something specific. These words’ meanings are always determined by the context in which they are uttered. We know that he refers to a male and that there refers to a place and that now refers to a time, but these vague meanings alone don’t give us the precise information that we need to figure out what would be meant by this sentence when uttered in some context. Considering this sentence in isolation, we don’t know whom we are talking about, where he is, or when he is there. Sentence(1) could mean that a friend of yours is in class, at the library, or in Europe; it could mean that Elvis Presley is in Las Vegas in the 1970s or that Santa Claus is at the North Poleon Christmas Eve. To determine which meaning was intended by the speaker, one would need to know when the sentence was uttered and what the speaker was talking about. A sentence can take on a particular, novel, and distinct meaning relative to a particularcontext. Consider the example in (2). (2)”Can you take the trash out”? This sentence seems fairly straightforward, but in fact it could have a range of different meanings. Suppose that your roommate isrunning late one morning and calls, “Can you take the trash out?” over her shoulder as she leaves. She is probably requesting that you take the trash out. On the other hand, suppose that you have been in a crippling accident and that you are only just beginning totake on simple housework again. If your physical therapist asks you the question in (2), 20

she is not making a request but rather inquiring about your ability to carry out a set of actions.Here’s a third case: suppose that your younger sibling is pestering you while you are trying to have conversation with a friend. Finally, in frustration, you turn to your sibling and say , “Don’t you have anything else to do? Can you take the trash out?” Here you might not care whether your sibling takes the trash out at all. Rather, you just want to be left alone! Suppose, on the other hand, that in the same context, instead of saying to your sibling, you have instead turned to your friend and, while pointing at your sibling,asked whether your friend can take the trash out. Now you are suggesting that your sibling is the trash, and you want your friend to carry your sibling out of the room! The same simple sentence can thus have at least four very different meanings. With a little creativity, you could come up with many more.From both of these examples, it is plain to see that we cannot talk about what an utterance of a sentence means without knowing aboutthe context in which it was uttered. Some people may argue that there are certain default or “out-of-the- blue” interpretations for many sentences. Of course they are correct. For example, for most speakers, the default out of-the-blue interpretation of (2) is that it is a request. What is important to recognize, however is that out-of-the- blue is one particular kind of context that affects the meaning of anutterance as much as would any other kind of context. Prof. Amosova suggests that in the case of the grammatical context the semantic indication is provided by syntactical structure of the sentence in which the dependant is used. In grammatical contexts it is the grammatical (mainly the syntactic) structure of the context that serves to determine various individual meanings of a polysemantic word. One of the meanings of the verb make, e.g. 'to force, to enduce', is found only in the grammatical context possessing the structure to make somebody do something, or in simpler terms this particular meaning occurs only if the verb make is followed by a noun and the infinitive of some other verb (to make smb laugh, go, work, etc.).Another meaning of this verb 'to become', 21

'to turn out to be' is observed in the contexts of a different structure, e.g. make followed by an adjective and a noun (to make a good wife, a good teacher, etc.) Such meanings are sometimes described as grammatically (or structurally) bound meanings. Cases of the type she will make a good teacher may be referred to as syntactically bound meanings, because the syntactic function of the verb make in this particular context (a link verb, part of the predicate) is indicative of its meaning 'to become, to turn out to be'. A different syntactic function of the verb, e.g. that of the predicate (to make machines, tables,etc.),excludes the possibility of the meaning 'to become, turn out to be'. Grammatical context appears in case some grammar functions plays the role of the indicator. For example, the meaning of the word ill depends on the function it fulfills in the utterance 16 . If it is the predicative function (fall ill, be taken ill), the meaning of the analyzed unit should be understood as in bad health. If the function is attributive (ill luck, ill will), the meaning of the unit under consideration is bad, hostile. As you can see two meanings are quite different. That's why it is of great importance to take into account the grammatical context. Teachers should explain to students that some authors provide a considerable amount of information to support understanding of challenging words, whereas others provide a lean amount of information. Further, the types of context clues vary. Although many books offer picture and graphic clues, we focus here on linguistic clues, both syntactic (i.e., word order) and semantic (i.e., meaning). Edwards and her colleagues identified the following types of linguistic clues: direct definitions, synonyms, examples, contrasts or antonyms, and other sentence- or paragraph-level support.Authors sometimes provide a direct definition of a word, as is the case with the words meteor and weatherin these two sentences: 1) A meteor is a piece of space dust or rock that burns up as it enters Earth’s atmosphere. 2) To weather a storm means to come safely through it. of the words are directly and explicitly provided for readers. Notice the use of the word isin the first sentence and means in the second sentence. Readers know they are being provided definitions.Sometimes a writer uses a comma to signal a definition or includes words such as or, that is, and in other words, as in the following: 1) We are still on the front side of the moon, the quarters that lead up to the full moon. 2) Apparitions,or ghostly figures, often make scary stories especially frightening. Authors sometimes use a synonym near an unfamiliar word, as in these sentences: I was the penultimate person in a very long line. Being next to last was discouraging. Meanings of unknown words are sometimes revealed through the use of contrasts or antonyms. Hints such as instead of, unlike, rather than, and opposed to are helpful, as in this sentence:Unlike his talkative brother, Eduardo was talk in turn by nature. Sometimes the immediate sentence will not provide sufficient contextual information for students to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word. For example, the italicized word in this sentence cannot be understood by using the immediate context: His stomach was lavaged. However, when read in a larger context, the meaning of the word becomes apparent:”He accidentally picked up the wrong container and swallowed a substantial amount of the poison. Acting quickly, his family called the paramedics. They transported him to the hospital where the ER physicians inserted a long tube down his throat. His stomach was lavaged. His life was saved.Do you understand the word lavagewhen given this larger context? To lavage is to wash out a hollow body organ, such as a stomach, using a flow of water or saline. Sometimes we say an individual has had his or her “stomach pumped.” Insufficient information is provided in the sentence to help us understand the word, whereas considerable information is provided in the paragraph. Bishop and Bishop stated, “It must be stressed that the use of context moves well beyond the sentence level. When students have a firm understanding of the book they are reading, they have created a context and know every word they encounter should fit within the context”. Sometimes the clue to the word meaning is available even before the selection is read. For instance, when a scary book is selected, the reader is aware that there will be an abundance of scary words encountered, as in this example: “Hector turned the corner only to see the apparition appear immediately in front of him. Hector’s hair stood on end and goose bumps ran up and down his arms. Was this creature the same one who had come right through George’s closed door? That Hector could see right through it did nothing to quell his fear”. Providing reasons for reading and engaging students in thinking about the content of a selection prior to reading can facilitate students’ abilities to use context to understand unknown words. Graves and Watts-Taffe stated that the most widely recommended and most useful word-learning strategy is using context. They asserted that “carefully planned and robust instruction in using context clues should be part of a comprehensive vocabulary program”. Greenwood and Flanigan agreed, noting that because context clues are very transportable, they merit careful teaching. Although others argue that context is often unhelpful or even misleading, sufficient research suggests that instruction in the use of context to derive word meanings is worthwhile In general, we recommend the following: -In both oral and written language interactions, emphasis should be on meaning. anticipate that something relevant and logical is intended by the use of an unknown word. They will be thinkers and approach language interactions as meaning makers. This recommendation is especially important for teachers of English language learners. -Contextual analysis should be taught explicitly; teachers should familiarize students with the variety of clues that authors provide to support meaning, while also reminding students that not all contexts are helpful in determining word meanings. - Teachers should model the use of context to confront unknown words by thinking aloud. Students need to witness contextual analysis in action in authentic circumstances, such as when the teacher reads aloud. - Teachers should scaffold students’ use of context to build initial hypotheses about the meaning of an unknown word 18 .In the remainder of this section, we provide several strategies for building students’ abilities to use context for word learning. We begin with strategies that draw students’ attention to reading as a meaning- making endeavor. These strategies support an understanding of reading as thinking. When students who are thinkers confront a new word in the context of reading, they ask themselves, What might this mean? What would make sense here? Then we share strategies that focus specifically on the kinds of context clues authors use. Students are most willing to learn and use a strategy when they see it as helping them accomplish something important. As stated earlier, when students find what they are reading interesting and useful, chances are increased that they will be motivated to use context clues. Similarly, when students have some background knowledge of the content, they will more likely be able to use context clues to determine a word’s meaning. Prereading discussions that pique students’ interest and that build or activate background knowledge can set the stage for readers to use context to support their 18 Dijk, van T.A. Text and context. understanding of unfamiliar words. Using an appealing work of literature such as Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are(1988), teachers of young students may take two or three minutes to share the book cover, read the title, and discuss what might happen in the story. Through this process, the teacher guides students to develop both a reason for reading the story and predictions about the story. Engaging older students in hands-on lessons, exciting demonstrations, activities that draw on their personal experiences, and strategies that spark conversations about a topic prior to reading guides them to actively approach a text. For all students having literature read to them is important to using context clues. A simple pause can be highly effective for helping students think about how words make sense in the context of the text. And the strategy helps students view themselves as active participants in the reading process. When reading aloud to students, the teacher simply pauses slightly just before a highly predictable word or phrase. The more students hear what informational text material sounds like and the more the tone and structure of such material becomes familiar, the more easily and naturally context clues are used. Cloze Technique.Cloze is a technique in which the reader supplies words that have been deleted from a sentence or passage. In order to make reasonable word suggestions, students must attend to the content and the language surrounding the missing word. What is the topic of the selection? What word would make sense in the general context? What would make sense in the immediate context of the sentence? What kind of word is needed? The following progression might be useful for guiding students to recognize the support that context can provide: - Present students with several words from which to select as they determine the deleted word. - Present the initial letter or letter combinations for the missing words. -Use passages in which highly predictable words are deleted. - Use passages in which every fifth word is deleted. 26

Teachers should model each step and engage students in conversations about their word choices. Then students may work in groups or pairs to complete cloze sentences. Finally, having been carefully moved toward independence, students work individually. The importance of this strategy is that it gives students insights into the fact that context can contribute to their understanding of words. Context Clues and Semantic Gradients. Semantic gradients are related words placed along a continuum (e.g., tiny, little, average, big, huge). Working with semantic gradients helps students recognize shades of meaning.In this combined strategy, students are provided increasingly more informative cloze sentences. The first sentence allows for many possibilities. Greenwood and Flanigan used the following sentence as an example: “The teacher was _______________.” Students are then given a word continuum such as happy, pleased, disappointed, upset, andlivid. Students realize that given the context, any of these words will make sense in the sentence. They are then given an enriched version of the same sentence: “The teacher was __________ because the class behaved so well.” It contains more information, so the number of reasonable options decreases. A third version of the sentence is provided, one with a different context: “The teacher was ____________ because the class was so unruly.” New possibilities are discussed. Then an even richer context is provided, and students select the word that makes the most sense. During discussions, the students are guided to understand that context narrows the possibilities. Eventually, students can compose their own semantic gradients and corresponding sentences. Sorts. As you may have observed, we have suggested the use of sorts several times in this book. Sorting helps students think about word meanings, notice components of words, or in this case, identify types of context clues. Students must closely examine the items in order to make sorting decisions. Initially, items for sorting should be simple and straightforward, and the number of categories should be minimal. For example, after students have learned that sometimes an author provides a direct definition of a term (especially in informational texts), students sort cards prepared by the teacher into one of two stacks: sentences in which there 27

is a direct definition of a challenging term and sentences in which there is not a direct definition of a challenging term. Where would you place these sentences? - To prettify means to make pretty. - An intersection is a place where two or more roads meet. - He kibbled the grain. - She prepared the kindling and placed it outside the back door. Hopefully, you said that the first two sentences belong in a “direct definition provided” stack and the final two sentences belong in a “no direct definition provided” stack.Later, students can sort based on clue type. For instance, beginning with just two categories, students might sort the following sentence cards into those that provide direct definition clues and those that provide contrast or antonym clues: 1. Unlike her willing friend, she was reluctant to dive into the water. 2.The prestidigitator, or sleight-of-hand artist, amused the audience with her card tricks. 3. His life was one of privation, one lacking in the usual comforts and necessities of life. 4. She hoped her future would be one of affluence rather than poverty. 5.Clue Hunts.Any strategy is more meaningful when it is used in an authentic context. After students have been taught that authors sometimes provide clues to word meanings, the teacher may encourage them to go on a clue hunt and find examples of context clues in their reading materials. 7.Write Students will understand the power of authors’ words and the deliberateness with which they choose their words when students engage in writing. In order to deepen their appreciation of context clues, students can be asked to write sentences or passages in which they provide context clues for target words. What words might they target? Consider the following: - Students may select words that they find personally challenging or that they believe would be challenging to their classmates. 28

- The teacher may select specialized content vocabulary from a topic under study in one of the content areas. CHAPTER II Context Aproach in teaching English language 2.1 Strategies and principles of context approach Many of the context approach elements are common in classrooms throughout the United States and enjoy a rich history of educational research about their effectiveness. Context approach unifies these teaching and learning practices into one approach to instruction. The unified approach has given educators a common language for discussing their beliefs in effective practice and ways to broaden the "pockets of excellence” in their schools. The context approach succeed because it asks young people to act in ways are natural to human being. That is, it conforms to the brain function, to basic human psychology, and to the three principles that modern biology and physics have discovered permeating the entire universe. These principles - independence, differentiation, self-organizing - infuse everything that lives, including human beings Centre of Occupational Research and Development (CORD) delivers five strategies to implement the Context approach are called as REACT such as: 1. Relating is the most powerful element in contextual teaching strategy. It also suggests that students’ learning in the context of one’s life experiences or pre- existing knowledge. In relating, teachers link a new concept to something completely unknown to students. Caine called this reaction "felt meaning. ” That reaction can be momentous, as when a student finds the solution to a problem that he or she has spent significant time and effort in solving. 2. Experiencing. In contextual approach, one strategy relates to another. The previous statement appears to indicate that relating connects new information to life experiences or prior knowledge that students bring to the classroom. Teachers are able to overcome this obstacle and help students construct new knowledge with 29

hands-on experiences that occur inside the classroom. This strategy is called experiencing. In experiencing, students are learning by doing through exploration, discovery, and invention . It can be seen by looking at students were able to create diagram events independently and organize the drafting of the recount text from their diagram events. In this strategy, students were also able to work in pairs to analyze the text in terms of linguistic features and generic structure. In the class hands-on experiences can include the use of manipulative, problem-solving activities, and laboratories. 3. Applying . Applying strategy can be defined as learning by putting the concepts to use. Clearly, students can implement the concepts when they are engaged in hands on problem solving activities. Teachers can also motivate a need for understanding the concepts by assigning realistic and relevant exercises. Relating and experiencing are strategies for developing insight, felt meaning, and understanding. Applying is a context approach strategy that develops a deeper sense of meaning. In applying strategies, the tasks are designed to be interesting, different, and varied. The aim is to provide students with a wide variety of tasks to engage in and ensure that the tasks have some engaging, novel, interesting, or surprising, features. In CTL contexts, applying is a contextual teaching and learning strategy that develops a deeper sense of meaning. Accordingly, students also develop their knowledge through their active participation in the teaching and learning process. Based on the data gained, the teacher’s roles to facilitate learning process are: (1) making the knowledge meaningful and relevant to the students; (2) giving chance to the students to find and apply their own ideas; and (3) making students aware to apply their own strategy into learning process. 4. Cooperating. Students are not able to make significant progress in a class when they work individually. On the other hand, students working in small groups can handle that complex problem with little outside help. Teachers using student-led groups to complete exercises or hands-on activities are using the strategy of 30

cooperating. This strategy refers to learning in the context of sharing, responding, and communicating with other learners. Most students feel less self-conscious and can ask questions without feeling embarrassed, when they work with peers in a small group discussion. Another fact of cooperative learning is that it can be counterproductive. For example, some students may not participate in the group processes at all, while others may dominate and the group members may refuse to accept or share responsibility for the group’s work. Johnson, who is the leading researcher in cooperative learning, has established guidelines to help teachers avoid those negative conditions and create environments where students may be expected to learn concepts at a deeper level of understanding. The guidelines are divided into five points: structuring positive interdependence within students learning groups; having students interact while completing assignments and ensuring that the interactions are on-task; holding all students individually accountable for completing assignments and not letting them rely overly on the work of others; having students learn to use interpersonal and small group skills; and ensuring that learning groups discuss how well the group functions. 5. Transferring. In traditional classroom, students’ roles are to memorize the facts and practice the procedures by working skill drill exercises and word problems. In contrast, in a contextual or constructivist classroom, the teachers’ role is expanded to include creating a variety of learning experiences with a focus on understanding rather than memorization. Transferring is a teaching strategy that we define as using knowledge in a new context or novel situation-one that has not been covered in class. It suggests that students who learn with understanding can also learn to transfer knowledge. 31

They are problem based, using multiple contexts, drawing upon student diversity, supporting self-regulated learning, using interdependent learning groups, employing authentic assessment. Problem-based. Context approach is started with a simulated or real problem. Critical thinking skills are used by the students to address the problem or issue. To solve these problems, students may also draw upon multiple content areas. Useful problems that are relevant to students ‟ families, school experiences, workplaces, and communities hold greater personal meaning. Like any other learning theories, problem based learning too has its advantages and limitations when it is implemented in the curriculum. Since this experiment began in medical education, strong opinions have been expressed and questions raised regarding the effectiveness and educational efficiency of problem based learning approach in teaching sciences basic to medicine. Following are the advantages and limitations of problem based learning. In problem based learning the students are actively involved and they like this method. It fosters active learning, and also retention and development of lifelong learning skills. It encourages self-directed learning by confronting students with problems and stimulates the development of deep learning. 32

Problem based learning gives emphasis to lifelong learning by developing in students the potential to determine their own goals, locate appropriate resources for learning and assume responsibility for what they need to know. It also greatly helps them better long term knowledge retention. Problem based learning focuses on engaging students in finding solutions to real life situations and pertinent contextualized problems. In this method discussion forums collaborative research take the place of lecturing. PBL fosters deep learning by involving students with the interaction of learning materials. They relate the concept they study with everyday activities and enhance their knowledge and understanding. Students also activate their prior knowledge and build on existing conceptual knowledge frameworks. Students themselves resolve the problems that are given to them; they take more interest and responsibility for their learning. They themselves will look for resources like research articles, journals, web materials etc. for their purpose. Thus it equips them with more proficiency in seeking resources in comparison to the students of traditional learning methods. By giving more significance to the meaning, applicability and relevance to the learning materials it leads to better understanding of the subjects learnt. When students are given more challenging and significant problems are given it makes them more proficient. The real life contexts and problems make their learning more profound, lasting and also enhance the transferability of skills and knowledge from the classroom to work. Since there is more scope for application of knowledge and skills the transferability is increased. It will be also very helpful to them not only to visualise what it will be like applying that knowledge and expertise on their field of work or profession. Project based learning is more of teamwork and collaborative learning. The teams or groups resolve relevant problems in collaboration and hence it fosters student interaction, teamwork and reinforces interpersonal skills like peer evaluation, working with group dynamic etc. It also fosters in them the leadership qualities, 33

learn to make decision by consensus and give constructive feed back to the team members etc. The students in context approach classes have higher scores than the students in traditional courses because of their learning competencies, problem solving, self-assessment techniques, data gathering, behavioural science etc. It is because they are better at activating prior knowledge, and they learn in a context resembling their future context and elaborate more on the information presented which helps in better understanding and retention of knowledge. Using multiple contexts. Theories of situated cognition suggest that knowledge cannot be separated from the physical and social context in which it develops. How and where a person acquires and creates knowledge is therefore very important. Context approach experiences are enriched when students learn skills in multiple contexts (i. e. school, community, workplace, family). Drawing upon student diversity. On the whole, our student population is becoming more and more diverse, and with increased diversity comes differences in values, social mores, and perspectives. These differences can be the impetus for learning and can add complexity to the Context approach experience. Team collaboration and group learning activities respect students’ diverse histories, broaden perspectives, and build inter-personal skills. Supporting self-regulated learning. Ultimately, students must become lifelong learners. Lifelong learners are able to seek out, analyze, and use information with little to no supervision. To do so, students must become more aware of how they process information, employ problem - solving strategies, and use background knowledge. Context approach experiences should allow for trial and error; provide time and structure for reflection; and provide adequate support to assist students to move from dependent to independent learning. Using interdependent learning groups. Students will be influenced by and will contribute to the knowledge and beliefs of others. Learning groups, or learning communities, are established in workplaces and schools in an effort to share knowledge, focus on goals, and allow all to teach and learn from each other. When 34

learning communities are established in schools, educators act as coaches, facilitators, and mentors. David Johnson, Roger Johnson, and Karl Smith performed a meta-analysis of 168 studies comparing cooperative learning to competitive learning and individualistic learning in college students. They found that cooperative learning produced greater academic achievement than both competitive learning and individualistic learning across the studies, exhibiting a mean weighted effect size of 0.54 when comparing cooperation and competition and 0.51 when comparing cooperation and individualistic learning. In essence, these results indicate that cooperative learning increases student academic performance by approximately one-half of a standard deviation when compared to non-cooperative learning models, an effect that is considered moderate. Importantly, the academic achievement measures were defined in each study, and ranged from lower-level cognitive tasks (e. g., knowledge acquisition and retention) to higher level cognitive activity (e. g., creative problem solving), and from verbal tasks to mathematical tasks to procedural tasks. The meta-analysis also showed substantial effects on other metrics, including self-esteem and positive attitudes about learning. Employing authentic assessment. Context approach is intended to build knowledge and skills in meaningful ways by engaging students in real life, or "authentic" contexts. Assessment of learning should align with the methods and purposes of instruction. Authentic assessments show (among other things) that learning has occurred; are blended into the teaching/learning process; and provide students with opportunities and direction for improvement. Authentic assessment is used to monitor student progress and inform teaching practices. Today, the teachers use many of these strategies in classrooms. In order to conduct the strategies effectively, all strategies must be present in the teaching/ learning experience. Implementation of Context approach may not require drastic changes in practice for all educators. It may require enhancement of practice in one characteristic and not another. processes broadens and deepens educators ‟ knowledge and ability to facilitate learning. Context approach as one of approaches for teaching and learning has scientific principles. According to Johnson there are 3 principles of it. They are principles of interdependence, the principles of differentiation, and the principles of self-regulation. Principles of Interdependence. Human being could not establish intimacy with one another. It means that although the approach consists of authentic learning activity that is conducted group, there is no one can intimidate the other’s to follow the certain students. It is a sharing and discussing section when it is conducting in group, so the principle stresses that all of the learners have the interdependence. In Context approach the principle of interdependence invites educators to recognize their linkages with other educators, with students, with communities and with the environment. The principle of interdependence invite students to work together, mutual expression, listening to each other to find the problem, designing the plan, and seek solutions to problems. The principle is to unite the experiences of each individual to achieve high academic standards. It is not hard to structure for interdependence. For the team to do well, each student must do his/her part well. Learning situations differ in the type of interdependence they create. How much and what type of interdependence there is depends on how we structure the learning task. Let's examine Timed Pair Share as an example. In Timed Pair Share, students are in pairs and each student in turn shares with her partner for a specified amount of time while the other just listens. The structure is designed primarily to allow each student to verbalize her/his thoughts. In Timed Pair Share there is a positive correlation among outcomes: A good idea from one helps the other learn or think. Students find themselves on the same side, hoping their partner has interesting or useful ideas. There is also interdependence for task completion (the students need each other to get through the steps of the structure). There is not, however, interdependence for developing one's thinking. Students can actually 36

complete a Timed Pair Share without listening to each other at all! We might hope that students are listening to each other and developing their ideas based on their partner's ideas, but we have not structured their interaction to ensure that will happen. Table 3. Match Mine creates very strong interdependence by limiting what each student can see, and by creating interdependent roles. Partners have identical game pieces and are seated on opposite sides of a barrier. One partner (The Sender) arranges her game pieces in a specific arrangement on a game board and must communicate the layout to her partner (The Receiver) in order to make a match. The students are completely interdependent; neither can have success without the contributions of the other. To succeed students must cooperate and communicate well. The ways to create interdependence include: Turn taking; Assigning different necessary roles to each student; Assigning different access to materials to each student (Pair Projects in which one has the scissors and another the glue); Providing different essential information to each student (Jigsaw Problem Solving); 37

Limiting the time so that no one person can complete the task alone (Brainstorming); Increasing the task difficulty so no one person can complete the task alone (Team Project requiring coordination of efforts); Designing tasks with cumulative contributions; Having students teach each other (Telephone, Partners, Jigsaw); Assigning "mini-topics" for a group investigation/presentation. When the students are different in their creativity, they could be free to explore their individual talents, cultivate their own learning styles, and progress at their own pace. It means that contextual teaching and learning approach can be conducted to the students with different characters, talents, and ability. The importance of the principle is how the contextual teaching learning helps the students to explore their own talent and can have a big motivation to study based on their life context. Differentiated instruction is a principle-guided method to approach teaching and learning, and it is implemented in the context of a classroom system that contains four interdependent elements: learning environment, curriculum, assessment, and instruction. In all classrooms, there is a learning environment that is shaped by a teacher's beliefs, experiences, and actions. There is a curriculum, shaped by a teacher's content knowledge, text materials, and local or federal mandates. There is some form of assessment, again shaped by both the teacher and forces external to the teacher. Finally, all classrooms benefit from instruction that individual teachers design (or follow established designs for) and implement. The way in which the teacher envisions and enacts each of these elements shapes each of the other elements. For example, an assessment that feels judgmental to students will negatively impact the learning environment. Likewise, a classroom in which curriculum is highly prescribed, with few or no options for a teacher to make professional decisions on behalf of students, limits that teacher's options for instruction. 38

Principle of Self-Regulation. Self-regulation means everything is set up, maintained, and recognized by yourself. The principle motivates the students to show all of their potentials. Moreover, it also explores them to get the new talents. The students should be give them belief by giving responsibility for taking the decision, behavior, choice, plan, solution etc. Teachers face problems and challenges that are complex and rarely straightforward. As Jonson points out, teaching teachers facts and rigid decision-making models is less effective than nurturing within teachers the capacity and skills to deal with the difficult problems of the real world. It is ironic that teachers are often taught with pedagogical methods that are contrary to the principles that they are being taught, such as direct instruction on problem-based learning or cooperative learning. They describe a model of professional development called "collaborative innovation” in which teachers work together to adapt, invent, evaluate, discuss, and revise instruction that fits their own classrooms and contexts, including such factors as students, time, buildings, resources, accountability pressures, and parents. It is a professional development model of the co-construction of meaningful experiences. 2.2 Teaching English productive skills through Context approach Writing is one of the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Writing and speaking are considered to be productive skills that means, they involve producing language rather than receiving it. There are various ways how to define writing. Oxford Dictionary defines writing as: "the representation of 39

language in a textual medium through the use of a set of signs or symbols (known as a writing system)." On the other hand, in The Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Writings Systems, Florian Coulmas defines a writing system as: "a set of visible or tactile signs used to represent units of language in a systematic way, with the purpose of recording messages which can be retrieved by everyone who knows the language in question and the rules by virtue of which its units are encoded in the writing system." Writing has served different functions in society. It is typically used for the transmission for cultural knowledge, keeping records of historical facts or scientific developments, codifying laws etc. In everyday life, writing is used for sharing information (newspapers), for entertainment (comics, computer games), for social contact (e-mails, SMSs) and for action (telephone directories). While writing, we have to distinguish between accuracy and fluency. Writing accurately involves spelling correctly, forming letters correctly, writing legibly, using correct pronunciation, using correct layouts and choosing the right vocabulary. We also have to use grammar correctly, joining sentences correctly and using paragraphs correctly. As it was mentioned earlier, when we write we communicate. To communicate means: e. g. express somebody’s experience, respond to greeting or invitation. Therefore we can state, that both accuracy and fluency are very important in writing and while teaching it we have to strongly focus on both of them. The goal of a language teacher is to enable students to produce fluent, understandable, accurate and appropriate written English. But this is a hard work for English teachers in mixed ability classes where the students are on the different level. According to G. Broughton, English teachers can use three stages of writing. They are controlled writing, guided writing and free writing. Controlled writing. It is sensible to distinguish between writing exercises in which the final product is linguistically determined by the teacher and exercises in which the final content is determined. Thus, by controlled writing G. Broughton 40

understands e. g. exercises in which a paragraph with blank is to be filled in which picture prompts or memory of a model presented by the teacher, leads to reproducing more or less exactly the same final product as each other. Guided writing. A composition support in which the teacher provides the situation and helps the class to prepare the written work is guided writing. Each piece of work is different in the language used. Free writing. By free writing we understand a writing in which the title is provided and everything is done by the students. Further, G. Broughton claims that to be successful in teaching writing skills it is necessary to make sure that the students start with controlled writing and when they become more confident in working with controlled exercises more and more guided writing exercises should be available. Another aspect that English teachers should be aware of is functional style or register. Therefore, the teachers must select the conventions and style which are most likely to be useful to the students, if they want to be successful. But the great deal of sensitivity which students need in using language develops unconsciously from spinoff from reading. In teaching writing skill teacher is an essential factor. Before giving a task to students, the teacher should check whether the task is appropriate for the needs of the students, the task is within the level of the students, the task is just above their level, so they will be really challenged or whether the task is enjoyable. In dealing with written work G. Broughton suggest the teacher to grade the task in following ways (these strategies help the teacher to organize lesson and can be used in any combination): -limit the length of the written material to be produced; -increase the amount of class preparation for the task; -provide guidance on the final form of the written work, for example with picture prompts or memory prompt; -encourage students to collaborate in the actual process of writing; -allow cross-checking between the draft stage and the writing of the final product; 41

-limit the complexity of the writing task itself; -demand that the task be completed either slowly or quickly. In writing for learning students write predominantly to spread their learning of grammar and vocabulary of the language. Further Harmer divides writing for learning into reinforcement writing, preparation writing, activity writing and reinforcement writing. It is a simple form where students are asked to write sentences using grammar they have recently learnt, write paragraphs or longer compositions to practice recently focused-on aspects of language. Students also can be asked to write a story about something that happened in the past (to practise past tenses), or to write a description of someone they know to use the character and physical description vocabulary. The aim of this phase is to give students opportunity to practise and remember new language they have learnt better. The act of writing these exercises makes them think about the new vocabulary or grammar. When learning second language sometimes it is more useful to use writing as preparation for some other activities. J. Harmer suggests using preparation writing for example when students are asked to prepare discussion. Writing sentences "gives the students time to think up ideas rather than having to come up with instant fluent opinions, something that many, especially at lower level, find difficult and awkward". Another technique that Harmer suggests to use is for students to talk in groups to prepare their arguments. It is effective for students to make notes which they can use during their discussion. Preparation writing can be a vital help for weaker or shy students who are not so confident to speak immediately. Writing is frequently used with activities that focus on something else such as language practice, acting out or speaking. Activity writing is used with activities in which students are asked to write their dialogue before they act it out. It is helpful for students to plan and write the dialogue before they act it out. Other types are questionnaire-type activities. Groups of students design a questionnaire and then they circulate around the class asking their colleagues the questions they have 42

prepared. They write down the answers and later students report what they have found out. The aim of activity writing is to use writing to help students to perform other activity but "students need to be able to write to do these activities, but the activities do not teach students to write. In writing for writing students are able to study written texts to become better writers. Writing for writing includes activities such are writing stories or poems, journals or creating dramatic scenarios. These tasks "force" students to express more personal and more complex thoughts. But this is not easy because most of students feel limited by knowledge of second language and they do not feel so ambitious and do not want to take risks. When helping students to improve their writing or to become better writers, the teacher plays a very important role. He or she brings the language to the class, supports students when they are stuck or evaluates them. Among the teacher’s tasks J. Harmer includes: Demonstrating. When students are involved in writing activities they need to be aware of writing conventions and genre constraints. The task of the teacher is to draw these features to their attention. Motivating and provoking. Sometimes students are stuck while writing and do not know how to start or continue. Then, the teacher’s task is to help, stimulate or encourage students and persuade them that writing can be an enjoyable activity. When students do not know what to do, it is good to prepare suggestions for them, rather than having students to think for a long time. There are several ways how to get students going. One of them is to give students several words they need for starting writing the activity. From time to time, the teacher can give the students several words they need for starting writing the activity as a good way of getting them going. Supporting is one of the most important teacher’s tasks. Students need a lot of help and reassurance and therefore teachers need to be very supportive when students are writing in the class and be prepared to help students to overcome problems. 43

Responding. By responding J. Harmer understands reacting to the construction and content of the students´ written work. Teachers make suggestions for improvement but do not judge or grade the work. The aim is to tell students how well they are doing. The teacher may also make suggestions and comments about the students’ use of language. The teacher might respond by saying how much he/she appreciates reading their work and enter a dialogue with the students. The teacher can also encourage students to look at each other’s work and ask for advice or suggestions about how to improve their writing. Evaluation and correction. Many teachers say that to evaluate their students is the hardest work. There are many situations when the students are evaluated. All students want to know how they are doing so far, what is necessary to improve and what standard they have achieved. When evaluating tests the teacher indicates what was written well and where the mistakes were made. When the teacher hands back marked work, he/she should get a student to have a look at the errors that are highlighted and try to put them right. By correcting J. Harmer means correcting syntax (word order), concord (grammar agreement), and collocation and word choice. Feedback is also very important here. When the teacher corrects, he/she actually plays several roles: students see the teacher as the examiner, in fact the teacher takes a role of audience (responds to the ideas), he/she can act as an assistant (helps students with writing), a resource (is available when students need information), an evaluator (says how well the students have done so far) and an editor (helps to select and rearrange the students´ writing). The way the teacher corrects is also significant. Jeremy Harmer suggests seven ways of correction: Selective correction. It means that the teacher does not have to correct everything. The teacher can correct only punctuation, verb tenses, grammar or to concentrate on using appropriate level of formality, using correct paragraphs and 44

so on. It is important to tell students before the writing that the teacher will use this approach. Using marking scales. The idea of this approach is to give marks out of 10 for each category the teacher chooses for students (e. g. grammar, vocabulary or verb tenses). With indications of mistakes this scale helps students to focus on the particular area they need to improve. Using correction symbols. Many teachers use correction symbols. The advantage of this method is that it encourages students to think about the mistakes they have made, in fact, the students correct the mistakes themselves. Reformulation. It is a way how the teacher can show the students to write something more correctly. The teacher shows how he/she would write the incorrect sentences or parts. The student then can compare his/her version with the teacher’s one. Referring students to a dictionary or a grammar book. When the mistake is made the teacher can ask a student to go and look the problem up in a dictionary of a grammar book. The advantage of referring students to use dictionaries or grammar books is that it is encouraging students to look at the information with a purpose in mind. The students learn as they correct. Ask me. From time to time it is difficult to explain a mistake on paper. In this case the teacher can ask the students to talk about the problem in face-to-face interaction. Remedial teaching. The aim of remedial teaching is to deal with the most common mistakes that students make. In this case, the correction is effective when the teacher points to the most common mistakes the students made and asks the students to correct the mistakes. The advantage of this way of correcting is that it is anonymous so nobody in the class feels ridiculous. As it was mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, to be able to spell correctly is significant. English spelling is considered to be quite difficult for learners. The best way how to teach students to spell correctly is to have them read as much as possible. 45

Extensive reading (e. g. reading short articles) helps students to remember English spelling rules. But this is not the only way and teachers should be more proactive. Give students word formation exercises, let them find out spelling rules or to use many other activities help students not only to learn spelling but also improve it, so they become more familiar with English spelling. J. Harmer suggests very interesting ideas how to prepare enjoyable tasks for students: -to work out a rule by looking at the spelling of pair or groups of words; -dictionary activities - are also suitable for lower level students e. g.: ask students to put a written list of words in an alphabetical order, focus on the spelling of the initial letters of words; -dictations - there are many alternatives how to write dictation with students. The traditional way is to read a paragraph to the learners. Another version is to write words that students hear on a cassette or they can dictate to each other.running dictation is ideal for spelling practice. Harmer suggests giving points for the correct spelling for each and every word: cards - students at lower levels can be given cards with letters (individual letters, digraphs etc.); students have to make words as many as possible from these cards. To be able to write with correct punctuation is an important skill. Very often we are judged by the quality of what is written. If capital letters, commas, paragraphs bounders, full stops are not used correctly in our writing, we can make a negative impression and our writing can be easily misunderstood. "If we want our students to be good writers in English we need to teach them how to use punctuation conventions correctly." It means to teach the system of writing at all types of schools. Harmer suggests these procedures for teaching punctuation: Disguised word copying. Students are given a list of words randomly organized and they have to rewrite these words in an alphabetical order. Other activities are: to give students a list of words they have recently learnt and ask them to write five most favourite and five least favourite words, or to give 46

students several sentences which they have to write in an appropriate column (e. g. like dislike, advantage-disadvantage). Copying from the board. It is probably the most common activity used in classes. But this activity can be turned into a game, too. For example the teacher writes words or phrases with difficult spelling on the board. Students look at the board for thirty seconds and try to remember them. Then the teacher rubs the words off and the students have to try to write them correctly. Making notes. During studies students write notes for many reasons. Because note taking involves copying it is a good activity for improving writing. Harmer suggests getting students to read encyclopaedia about a country and write accurately as many places names as possible, or to read an extract about history and write down the names of people mentioned there. It is essential to check these activities by the teacher and indicate where the problem is. Whisper writing. In this activity students are given a written sentence. A student can read the sentence for a short time. He/she is told that the spelling matters. The sentence is taken away and the student has to write the sentence from memory and pass it to another student. Finally we can state, that writing is a difficult skill to learn. We expect the learner to be able to spell correctly and to use punctuation correctly too. To make the learning as easy as possible and to make learners successful, confident and willing to write the teacher should provide the students with information (it means that students have to be given clear and logical instruction what the teacher wants them to do and to be clear about the topic details), language (if students need any specific language they should be given it before the activity so they will not be stuck) and ideas (teachers need to be able to suggest ideas to help students when they do not know how to start or continue). Speaking belongs to productive skills; it is more frequently used than writing. The main function of spoken language is to socialize individuals. On the contrary to writing, spoken language is produced and processed in real time, the speaker and hearer have limited time to plan and produce what they want to say and understand 47

what they hear. Speech is generally used in face-to-face conversations; it is temporary, spontaneous and variable. Spoken language is supported by body language such as gestures or facial expressions (often called non-verbal communication). Among other features of spoken language belong the opportunity for feedback: the hearer may ask for clarification, explanation or repetition of what sounds problematic. For speaking is typical different speed, false starts, pauses, unfinished sentences or hesitation. The main aim of teaching speaking skills is to communicate efficiently. Learners of a foreign language should be able to make themselves understood while speaking the language. The goal is to avoid misunderstanding in the message due to faulty vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. To help learners develop communicative efficiency, the teachers can use activities based on language input, language output and communicative output. In the document released by The National Capital Language Resource Centre (NCLRC) is said that: ” language input comes in the form of the teacher talk, listening activities, reading passage and the language heard and read outside of class. It gives learners the material they need to begin producing language themselves." ("Teaching Speaking”) NCLRC further divides language input into content-oriented input and form oriented input. Content-oriented input deals with information, it also includes description of learning strategies and example of their use. Form-oriented input deals with ways of using the language: guidance from the teacher or source of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and then discourse competence (language used in specific context), sociolinguistic competence (turn taking, pause, length) and strategic competence (phrases to use to ask for clarification and repair miscommunication). The amount of input, NCLRC says, depends on students listening proficiency and on the situation. Learners at lower levels, where the level of communication is not high, should be given an explanation in mother language rather than in the target language to avoid misunderstanding. However, listening 48

proficiency and situation are not the only factors that influence the input. J. Harmer adds: "we must also look at the conditions under which language learning takes place and who the students are. ” Harmer also says that some methodologies (e. g. Suggestopedia) demands on time, conditions and resources. Structured output deals with correct form. The aim is to make learners comfortable when producing language recently introduced sometimes with previously learned items. Structured output tasks are frequently used as the connection between the presentation stage and the practice stage. Communicative output is focused on the learner’s purpose to complete a task. To complete it the learners use the language they have recently learned as well as items of language they have already known. "In communicative output activities, the criterion of success is whether the learner gets the message across." Using minimal respond. In every group that we teach there are some students who do not feel confident to speak and they rather stay silent and just listen. To encourage these students to speak is to help them to build up a certain amount of minimal responses they can use in different types of exchanges. Such responses are often idiomatic phrases to indicate understanding, doubt, agreement or other responses. NCLRC affirms that: "Having a stock of such responses enables a learner to focus on what the other participant is saying, without having to simultaneously plan a response. ” Recognizing scripts. Invitations, greetings, compliments and other functions follow patterns of scripts as they are influenced by social and cultural norm. Teachers should make learners aware of the scripts in different situations, so the learners can predict what they will hear and what they will need to say in response. Using language to talk about language. Sometimes the learners come across the situation when they are misunderstood by their conversation partner. They often feel embarrassed or shy and they refuse to continue in speaking. Therefore the teacher should help the learners to overcome this situation by assuring them that misunderstanding can occur in any type of interaction and the teachers should give students strategies and phrases to use for comprehensible check. 49

Finally we can state, that by using these strategies the teacher can create authentic practice environment and students will get more confidence to manage various communication situations. Form-focused Speaking goes deeply into details of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. This stage is suitable for beginners. An effective way how to start teaching foreign languages is to base speaking on some simple, useful phrases and sentences e. g. greetings, simple questions and answers or personal descriptions which are easy to remember. These can be practiced by repetition drills. By repetition drills the teachers can change speed, the learner who is to repeat, the content of the sentence and the way of choosing the substitution. Meaning-focused Speaking deals with the message of the communication. The activity develops learner’s ability to speak. R. S Brown and P. Nation suggest several ways: 1. The teacher presents new vocabulary or grammar (it is based on form-focused instruction) and then the students are given some practice. 2. Frequently, before the students start to speak they work in groups or pairs to prepare the activity. The activity gives learners the opportunity to learn form each other. 3. The students are given topics to talk about. They may prepare it for homework, use dictionaries or a reference text and then they present what they have prepared. 4. Often, the activities are supported by pictures or written texts. They appear in a Raking activity or a Problem solving activity where the text contains important data about the situation and so on. 5. Many speaking activities force students to ask each other. The pattern of these activities is that each learner receives different information for completing the activity. In these kinds of activities students discover different names, two-way tasks or information gap. There are three basic reasons why teachers should provide students with activities: 50

1. Rehearsal: to organize e. g. a role-play for students in a shop or an airport offers them an opportunity to rehearse a real-life event and the students get the feeling of what is the communication in a foreign language like. 2. Feedback: having students to present what they know, that means, to use all the language they have learnt provides feedback for the teacher as well as for the students. The teachers can see what the students are doing well and what is needed to be improved. 3. Engagement: all speaking activities should be highly motivating so the students find them interesting to work on and to participate fully. Many tasks such as role- plays, discussion or problem solving are enjoyable even more if they copy the real life situations. There are teachers that constantly correct mistakes made during speaking activities, either during pronunciation exercises or during discussion. But it is important for the teachers to realize when the right time to correct is. J. Harmer claims that: "when students are repeating sentences trying to get their pronunciation exactly right, then the teacher will often correct (appropriately) every time there is a problem." On the other hand, when students hold a discussion about a chosen topic the teacher should not interrupt the discussion by correcting. Jeremy Harmer says: "Constant interruption from the teacher will destroy the purpose of the speaking activity." Many teachers, when talking about role-plays or discussion, prefer to watch or observe, listen and take notes. After the role-play the teacher asks students about their opinions and then the teacher presents his or her feedback. Generally speaking, the principle of watching, listening and taking notes is considered to be the most appropriate. In conclusion, Contextual teaching and learning is a concept that helps the teachers and students relate the meaning through prior and new knowledge to get new understanding. It has five components comprising constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning community, modelling, reflection and authentic assessment 51

and based on three basic principles as principles of interdependence, the principles of differentiation, and the principles of self-regulation. Various scientists defined different strategies used in context approach. Jonson delivers six strategies of Context approach in teaching English language. They are problem based, using multiple contexts, drawing upon student diversity, supporting self-regulated learning, using interdependent learning groups, employing authentic assessment. 2.3 Productive Teaching English through context approach The implementation of teaching English productive skills using Context approach consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings for presenting the material. Each meeting took 60 minutes. For the first cycle, the researcher used context approach to teach writing and speaking with a topic "Personality”. For the second cycle, the topic was "Sport”. Every cycle consisted of a series of steps: identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing and monitoring the action, reflecting and evaluating the result of the observation, and revising the plan. This was aimed to measure students’ knowledge of the topic before the treatment and to make a comparison with the post-test to know whether or not the student’ skills improved. After finishing the action, the researcher conducted a post-test to measure students’ improvement after having the treatment. The topics of pre-test and post-test were Personalities and Sport. Each test comprised short interview about their hobbies and writing a short essay about strange hobbies they had learnt about. Before the implementation of the research, there was conducted a pre-research through observation. Students and the teacher were interviewed. Based on the result of pre-observation, it was found that the class was very active, students’ level varied from pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate. However, most of them had difficulties with fluency in speaking and vocabulary, spelling and grammar accuracy problems with writing. Based on the interview done with the teacher, the students had problems in argumentation and coherence. Although they had got the materials in the previous lesson, they had forgotten what they had learnt. It was also proven by the researcher observation. When the teacher asked some questions, only few students gave the answer. The students also had problems in pronouncing the words. It was connected with their inability in spelling the words. The students had difficulty in 53

pronouncing and spelling the words because the written English word is different from the pronunciation. In pre-research, the researcher identified that the students’ writing and speaking skills should be improved by implementing a method that could overcome the problems. Therefore, the researcher designed teaching writing and speaking using context approach. Considering student’s level, the researcher would implement an action that is suitable and interesting for the students. The researcher would implement contextual teaching and learning, a method which relate subject matter content to real world situations and motivate students to make connections between knowledge and its applications in their lives as family members, citizens, and workers and to get engaged in the hard work that learning requires. The researcher believed that contextual teaching and learning is appropriate method to improve the students’ productive skills. The researcher has to prepare the lesson plan before implementing the action. The researcher also has to prepare the materials and students’ worksheet consists of some tasks and other thing related to the action. There are three section in lesson plan: opening, main activities, and closing. Cycle one consisted of two meetings. Each meeting took 60 minutes. The researcher planned different activities for each meeting. There were two topics discussed, "Personality" and "Sport”. The objectives of the 1 st lessons of each cycle were to teach students to use appropriate subject-specific vocabulary and syntax to talk about an increased range of general topics, and some curricular topics . The objectives of the 2 nd lessons of each cycle were to teach students to plan, write, edit and proof-read work at text level with minimal teacher support on the given topics. a) The First Meeting (Monday, 14 th September 2015) 1. Opening. The lesson started at 8.00 a. m. the teacher entered the class. The teacher greeted the students and checked the students’ attendance. Students were introduced the topic and the plan of the lesson. Students were asked to find out the objectives of the lesson by asking what they would be able to do after that lesson. 54

After that students were introduced success criteria which included explaining their ideas clearly using opinion expressions, supporting ideas with at least two strong evidences and evaluating others’ points of view by commenting and making conclusion. 2. Main Activity. After formatting small groups, students were given the list of new vocabulary and list of their definitions. The task was to match definitions to the given words. After discussing the new vocabulary, students were given tables with two columns. First is How I see myself, and the second - How others see me. First, students had to write about themselves using new words. When they finished the teacher told them to interview their classmates about their characters as if they were real journalists. Students could use questions given on the power point presentation. When they had finished, students presented the information about their classmates. In groups, students were given pictures of different rooms. The task was to make a description of the person who lived in that room. Students felt enthusiastic about acting detectives and gave various predictions. In the end of the lesson students were asked to prepare a short presentation about a person they admire. After each presentation other students gave their feedbacks according to the success criteria. 3. Closing. The teacher reviewed the lesson of that day by asking some questions to the students. The teacher gave a chance for the students to recall what had learned by their learning experience and then they took a conclusion together. The teacher asked to the students whether they had questions or not. But no students asked question. When the time given was over, the teacher asked the students whether they were happy or not in the lesson. The students answered "Yes”. Then the teacher said goodbye and closed the lesson. b) The Second Meeting (Wednesday, 16 th September 2015) 1. Opening. The second meeting was conducted on Monday, 21 st September, 2015. Topic of the lesson was ‘Personality’. The teacher started the lesson by greeting and checking students’ attendance. Then she reviewed the lesson of the last 55

meeting. After that, the students were introduced the topic and the plan of the lesson. Students were asked to find out the objectives of the lesson by asking what they would be able to do after that lesson. After that students were introduced success criteria which included writing a plan and a summary of at least 120 words with grammar accuracy (80 %) 2. Main Activity. Students were given a text about Jane Goodall’s biography. The task was to read and discuss it in groups. Students begun by discussing what they thought Jane was interested in when she was growing up using key language. Students told about their own interests and how these could be translated into future careers or whether these should just remain hobbies and why. The teacher introduced the main steps of writing a summary. She asked if students had had write or present summaries in their lives. Students answered that they gave a summary when they answer at lessons, talk about movies or books and make reports at school. Students were given a model of summary. Teacher gave the students worksheets where were three columns. In the first column there was a text about Nelson Mandela. The second column contained key words for the first and second paragraphs of the text. In the third column there was a summary of the first paragraph only. First, students discussed the first paragraph and key word. Then, in groups, they wrote a summary for the second paragraph. After that, they searched for key words for the third and fourth paragraphs and wrote summaries together. When they had finished teacher asked to write a summary for the first text about Jane Goodall. When students had finished their work they read it aloud and their classmates gave them feedback. 3. Closing. Before closing the lesson, the teacher reviewed the lesson of that day by asking some questions to the students. The teacher summed up the lesson together with the students. She also asked the students whether they were happy or not in today’s lesson. The students answer "Yes”. The teacher said goodbye and closed the lesson. c) The Third Meeting (Monday, September 21 st, 2015) 56

In the third meeting, the teacher conducted the first post-test. The first post-test was conducted to know the students’ learning achievement after the treatment. Observing or monitoring is an important aspect in a classroom action research. The data resulted from observing or monitoring would be the basis in deciding further action. Observation is done to know whether context approach could be implemented in teaching English to improve students’ productive skills. Observing or monitoring was done during the implementation of the action. When the students were doing the activity, the researcher observed the students’ behaviours to know the advantages and weaknesses of the method being applied. When the teacher implemented teaching vocabulary using contextual teaching and learning, the process was observed and the result can be explained as follows: a) The first meeting. In the first meeting students were introduced the topic of the lesson and list of activities they were going to have. Moreover, they were asked to make a list of objectives of the lesson. At first students were unconfident, however, they made a list of thing they were going to learn from this lesson. Moreover, teacher introduced the success criteria and students were told what they were expected to do to get high marks. Students were very enthusiastic working in groups. They felt more confident communicating with each other. However, some students still looked ashamed and reluctant when the teacher asked them, they answered in low voice to the teachers’ question. Furthermore, in group work activity, the situation was not exactly like what the teacher hoped. Some students dominated in the group and there was a group of students who did not know what to do. The teacher guided them answering their questions and translating some moments. She also reminded them to work in team. But in general, the students paid more attention to the lesson. In the situational activities, where students had to speak as journalists or detectives, students were very active. There were some grammar mistakes, but the teacher gave feedback to each speaker in the end of the lesson. Moreover, students tried to give positive feedback to each other and gave argumentations why they thought so. 57

Based on the observation of the learning process in the first cycle, the researcher found out that the implementation of context approach could motivate the students to be more active. However, there were some drawbacks. When the students found difficulties in finding the meaning of new words, they were not reluctant to ask the teacher. The students could also learn to work in team. In general, the class was well managed although there were some dominated students in the groups. b) The second meeting. In the second meeting, the teaching learning process ran more smoothly than the previous meeting. The students were more familiar with some activities comprising making a list of objectives, working in groups and giving feedbacks. The teacher explained the topic and asked if students had had to make summaries in their lives. After some time students could make a connection between writing summaries and their real life experience. So, students were able to tell the steps of writing a summary without teacher’s help. When the teacher gave the students the model with steps of writing summary, students attended discussion actively. After that, students worked individually to write their own summaries about Jane Goodall’s life. Students helped each other and finished the work in time. However, there were some students who found it difficult to finish the work in 20 minutes. When each student read their summaries, their classmates listened to them and gave feedback according to the success criteria discussed in the beginning of the lesson. Although the steps of writing a summary was not arduous to most of students, some of them made mistakes such as giving too much information, rewriting a paragraph and etc. All mistakes were discussed and students took feedback from the teacher. c) The third meeting. In the third meeting, the first post-test was conducted to know the students’ achievement in learning writing and speaking. The result of the first post-test showed improvement of students’ means score. The mean score increased from 57.76 in pre-test to 65.56 in post-test. 58

Based on the result of the observation, the researcher did the reflection of the action. The researcher wanted to know whether the action was successful or not by doing the reflection. Several positive results and weaknesses were found. There were things which the researcher noted down as the positive results. The teaching learning activities during the implementation of the contextual teaching and learning were generally well organized. The researcher noticed that the students were very excited in doing some activities, for example: detectives and searching for key words. From the implementation of the method, there were some positive results that the researcher noted down. They are: 1) learning by experiencing gave the students motivation; 2) students learned how to write a summary and succeeded in it; 3) group work gave them a chance to help each other 4) making up objectives of the lesson made students feel responsible about the lesson 6) giving feedback made students to support their speech by argumentation. Those points showed a positive change of students’ behaviour in joining the lesson. It was reflected from their active role in identifying the things around them. The students had enough courage to ask questions. Besides, there were also several things which were considered to be weaknesses. Some students dominated the group and there was a group where students were very passive. For example: when the teacher supervised group two, only one or two students did their task. Another group, group five were not able to complete the task successfully. The reason is the fact that groups were not well balanced. It means that the researcher had to arrange a new plan to solve these problems. The result of the test shows that the mean score of pre-test is 57.76 and the mean score of post-test is 65.56. It means that the students’ writing and speaking skills increased though it was not significant. In the result of post-test I, the students made a lot of mistakes bounded with coherence and intonation. Based on the 59

research reflection above, it can be concluded that the result of cycle one was not satisfactory yet. Based on the results of the reflection above, it could be seen that the action showed both the positive results and weaknesses. So, the researcher had to make the next plan and to conduct the next cycle in order to solve the problems and the weaknesses that appeared in the first cycle. In the next cycle, the researcher revised the plans and prepared two meetings. In this cycle, the researcher made a teaching and learning plan. In cycle 2, the we planned to make more group activities, it was hoped that the students would be more familiar with group work activity and there was not any student who would dominated in doing task in a group. The researcher divided the groups based on their test scores. There were groups that consisted of all smart students while the other consisted of students with lower level of English. Moreover, the researcher decided to make differentiation by outcome and individual support. The Second Cycle. Based on the result of cycle one, there were some problems which were found by the researcher. One of the problems was that some students dominated the group in doing task because they were not familiar with group work activity. The group activity was not balanced because the students were not divided based on their ability. There were groups that consisted of all smart students while the other groups consisted of students with lower English level. We made some changes to overcome the weaknesses of previous lesson. The changes are: (1) the researcher planned to make more group activities, (2) the researcher divided the groups based on their test scores, (3) the researcher and the teacher planned to make differentiation. In this cycle, the researcher implemented the action plan and observed the teaching and learning process in the classroom. She prepared the teaching materials and added more group activities and differentiated them. The second cycle was conducted in two meetings. Each meeting took 60 minutes. 60

a) The first meeting (Monday, September 28 th 2015) 1. Opening. The lesson started at 8.00 a. m. the teacher entered the class. The teacher greeted the students and checked the students’ attendance. Students were introduced the topic and the plan of the lesson. Students were asked to find out the objectives of the lesson by asking what they would be able to do after that lesson. After that students were introduced success criteria which included explaining their ideas clearly using opinion expressions, supporting ideas with at least two strong evidences and evaluating others’ points of view by commenting and making conclusion. 2. Main Activity. The teacher began awareness raising activities by reading an example sentence aloud to the students. The teacher read the sentence the first time pronouncing each word carefully, then read the sentence a second time in natural speech. After that she asked students which reading seemed more natural and why it seemed more natural. Using the ideas students came up with, the teacher explained the idea of English being a "stress - timed" language. The teacher told about the differences between stressed words and non-stressed words (i. e. principal verbs are stressed, auxiliary verbs are not). In order to do so, she wrote the following two sentences on the board: The beautiful Mountain appeared transfixed in the distance. He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to do any homework in the evening ; and u nderlined the stressed words in both sentences. Students were asked to try reading aloud. Students were divided ito two groups according to their post-test results. The teacher asked students to look through the example sentences and underline the words that should be stressed in the worksheet. Each right answer would give one point to the team. The teacher circulated about the room asking students to read the sentences aloud once they had decided which words should receive stresses 3. Closing. Before closing the lesson, the teacher reviewed the lesson of that day by asking some questions to the students. The teacher summed up the lesson together with the students. She also asked the students whether they were happy or 61

not in today’s lesson. The students answered "Yes”. The teacher said goodbye and closed the lesson. b) The second meeting (Wednesday, 30 th September 2015) 1. Opening. The second meeting was conducted on Monday, 21 st September, 2015. Topic of the lesson was ‘Sport’. The teacher started the lesson by greeting and checking students’ attendance. Then she reviewed the lesson of the last meeting. After that, the students were introduced the topic and the plan of the lesson. Students were asked to find out the objectives of the lesson by asking what they would be able to do after that lesson. After that students were introduced success criteria which included writing a plan and a summary of at least 120 words with grammar accuracy (80 %) 2. Main Activity. Draw a picture of hamburger and explain that the structure of paragraph can be considered as hamburger’s ingredients (top bun - topic sentence, meat - concrete details, cheese and tomatoes - commentary, bottom bun - concluding sentence). Ask students to predict what we should write in each part of paragraph. Show presentation (Students should make notes on their copybooks) Divide students into two groups. Hand out a "paragraph puzzle” envelope to each group, and then instruct them to organize the sentences to restore the paragraph’s structure. Team which gives the right answer first will be winner. Ask each group why they have chosen such structure. At the end of presentation there are 4 different pictures illustrating various stereotypes. Discuss what ideas Ss have looking at them. Students should write well-structured paragraph about ideas they have after discussion. Students check each other’s paragraphs and give feedback. 3. Closing. The teacher reviewed the lesson of that day by asking some questions to the students. The teacher praised what the students did. Then she asked the students’ feeling of that day lesson. When the time given was over, she said goodbye and left the classroom. 62

Conclusion Having discussed the outline of the research paper under the theme,’Context based learning in the EFL classes’ it can be concluded as following. Chapter I devoted to the theoretical view points on Context as main stage of learning. The dictionaries give the following definitions of the term “context”. 1.Context - the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect: e.g., You have misinterpreted my remark because you took it out of context; 2.the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc. Origin: contextus a joining together, scheme, structure, equiv. to contex(ere) to join by weaving (con- con- + texere to plait, weave) + -tus suffix of v. action; cf. text. 63

Context is defined as the aggregate of linguistic, situational, social and cultural variables that surround linguistic units such as texts, discourses, utterances, words, morphemes, phonemes, sounds, and distinctive features. The most detailed and consistent definition of the term “context” is considered to be given by Amosova N.N. In her work “ English Contextology” she defines context as the minimal stretch of speech determining each individual meaning of the word, its immediate syntactical environment. The context individualizes the meanings, brings them out. It is in this sense that we say that meaning is determined by context. According to Prof. Amosova, the word the meaning of which is to be realized is called the semantic dependant. In other words, context is the connection of the word with its indicator, which is either in direct or indirect syntactical connection with the actualized word. The semantic indicator is the element of the same syntactical unit which denotes the appropriate meaning of the word in a given context. Some linguists do not distinguish speech situation (immediate extra-lingual circumstances under which the utterance takes place) from context. Kolshansky G.V. discriminates between linguistic and extra linguistic context, defining context as the whole set of conditions under which a linguistic unit is used. Context approach as a concept that helps the teachers and students relate the meaning through prior and new knowledge to get new understanding. So, it is an expectation that the approach can give benefits for teacher and students in teaching learning process. According to Elaine B. Johnson, Context approach motivates the learner to take a charge of their own learning and to relate between knowledge and its application to the various contexts of their lives. The other benefits are it can produce the process of learning more meaningful because the students can enjoy their own learning by doing the practical activity. In other words, they relate their prior and new knowledge to get new understanding. So, they will easily remember, recall, and comprehending the material. Building upon this understanding, contextual learning theory focuses on the multiple aspects of any learning environment, whether a classroom, a worksite, or 64

a wheat field. It encourages educators to choose and/or design learning environments that incorporate as many different forms of experience as possible- social, cultural, physical, and psychological-in working toward the desired learning outcomes. It has five components comprising constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning community, modelling, reflection and authentic assessment and based on three basic principles as principles of interdependence, the principles of differentiation, and the principles of self-regulation. Various scientists defined different strategies used in Context approach. Jonson delivers six strategies of Context approach in teaching English language. They are problem based, using multiple contexts, drawing upon student diversity, supporting self-regulated learning, using interdependent learning groups, employing authentic assessment. The present study was administered to investigate the advantages of using Context approach in teaching writing, especially recount text and the way the approach improves the ninth grade students’ writing ability. The data in this study were obtained through observations, students’ interviews and written documents. It was found that this approach was beneficial for the students in learning writing. It was proven from the teaching strategies used in the classroom that are based on contextual teaching theory. These teaching strategies are relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating and transferring. In addition, authentic material was also used to assess the students’ writing. There were some benefits of using Context approach in writing class: (1) engaging students in writing activity; (2) increasing students’ motivation to participate actively in the writing class; (3) helping students to construct their writing; (4) helping students to solve their problems; (5) providing ways for students to discuss or interact with their friends; (6) helping the students to summarize and reflect the lesson.The use of Context approach in a writing class was responded to positively by the students. This contention is proved by the students’ writing improvement through two tests’ results. Three of eleven students scored in the proficient range on the pre-test, eight students had a proficient score on the first post-test and nine - 65

on the second post test. When students hold a discussion about a chosen topic the teacher should not interrupt the discussion by correcting. Jeremy Harmer says: "Constant interruption from the teacher will destroy the purpose of the speaking activity." Many teachers, when talking about role-plays or discussion, prefer to watch or observe, listen and take notes. After the role-play the teacher asks students about their opinions and then the teacher presents his or her feedback. Generally speaking, the principle of watching, listening and taking notes is considered to be the most appropriate. We can sum up that, Contextual teaching and learning is a concept that helps the teachers and students relate the meaning through prior and new knowledge to get new understanding.
