Introduction Under the guidance of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, special attention is paid to the formation of harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern thinking generation, able to take responsibility for the fate of the Homeland. Therefore, the task of education, the task of rising up a new generation who is capable of national renaissance will remain the prerogative of the state and constitute a priority. At present great importance is attached to the study and teaching of foreign languages. The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improvement of the system of foreign languages teaching” dated from 10 December 2012, the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013, the resolution № 4947 of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017-2021 years ” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution. Aiming to implement the resolution, some special people in the government are working on preparing and approving new teaching plans and programs taking into account introduction of foreign language teaching from the initial classes of the public schools, ensuring its execution are being carried out. The Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Further Improving language learning in the Republic” PR №1875 Issued in December, 2012 has obliged educational boards to ensure that school-leavers master a foreign language as a means of communication in two forms – oral and written, therefore proficiency in speaking and reading are the desired skills. The programs and plans of teaching are re-considered to apply the requirement of CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference. 4

Actuality of the theme. Children are almost always successful in acquiring the foreign languages that are spoken to them in early childhood. Provided that they have adequate opportunities to use the language over a period of several years. When the objective of second language learning is native like mastery of the target language, it may indeed be desirable for the learner to be completely surrounded by the language as early as possible. The actuality of the theme focuses on the efficiency of teaching English at the most elementary level. Investigation of the problem. Language acquisition is one of the most impressive and fascinating aspects of human development. Learning a language is an amazing feat-one that has attracted the attention of linguists and psychologists for generations The problem of teaching foreign languages to children at an early age has been investigated by many distinguished scientists such as: N.Chomsky, S.Krashen, P.M. Lightbown, E.A. Bates, C. Chaudron, J.Cummins, L.S.Vygotsky, V.S.Setlin, A.A.Miroluybov, I.V.Rahmanov, G.V. Rogova. The aim of the qualification work. To investigate the importance of teaching English as a second language to small children at an early age. After gaining its Independence our Republic is establishing closer economic, political, scientific and cultural relations with various peoples of the world. International relations are extended and strengthened through the exchange of delegations as well as scientific, technical and cultural information. At present foreign language teaching is a matter of state significance. According to Presidential Decree, starting from 2013-2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country is being taught from the first year of schooling in the form of lesson. 5

To carry out the aim of the investigation the following tasks are set:  to collect material related to the theme through library research.  to select necessary theoretic literature.  to make a survey of latest research in psychology, linguists and pedagogy related to teaching foreign language at elementary level.  to make analysis of applying text-book “Kid’s English” to 1 st year pupils and draw necessary conclusions. Methods and methodological basis of the work. Methods of foreign language teaching closely related to other sciences such as pedagogies, psychology, physiology and linguistics. A general theory of second language acquisition is based on behaviorist, cognitivist and sociocultural theories. Scientific novelty and practical value of the qualification work. The problem how to teach a foreign language to pre-school children and the children of a primary school in our country has been solved after adaptation of a Presidential Decree “On Measures to further improvement of foreign languages learning system”. Abroad experiment is organized in most elementary schools throughout the country on the basis of a new textbook “Kid’s English”. It is done to prove that it is necessary to begin the teaching English in the first grade and even in the kindergarten if good results to be achieved. Otherwise younger generation will not master foreign languages. Having studied that problem thoroughly it may be concluded teaching English at the elementary level is the most effective way of learning the language. Construction of the qualification work: The present qualification paper consists of an introduction two chapters, conclusion and the list of the literature. Total amount of the work is 62 pages. 6

Chapter I. Importance of learning English as a second language Teaching English to Preschool children. Teaching English to preschool children should be an entertaining, developmentally appropriate process. The proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America report that young children exhibit the ability to comprehend and apply language rules without explicit instruction. Instead, early childhood educators can scaffold preschoolers English language learning by using English in a variety of contexts and activities. According to experienced educators opinions teaching English must be realized step by step. At the first, teacher should create a language-rich environment. Label different parts of the classroom and home and add an image on the labels for reinforcement. Set up listening station with English languages CDs. Fill your classroom library with bilingual and English picture books. At the second, teacher should integrate multimodal activities into English language instruction. Education expert Howard Gardner points out that children posse multiple intelligences including logical, linguistic, interpersonal, musical, kinesthetic and spatial. Your activities should address these intelligences. At the third, English teacher must reinforce new information. If you read a story about animals, follow up by teaching preschoolers “Old MacDonald HadaFarm” and playing around of animal charades. As children point, discuss the different colors they create and then do a science lesson about rainbows. At the fourth, teacher should listen to children. Although children learning a new language may experience a silent period, most of them have something interesting to say when given the opportunity. Ask children simple questions that have predictable responses, such as their names and their ages. 7

At the fifth, teacher must illustrate abstract concepts with images, real and toys. For example, teach about rainbows by showing pictures of rainbows, creating rainbows with crystals or displaying block in a rainbow pattern. Keep English language learning fun by using themes and vocabulary important to preschool children such as greetings, friendship, colors, toys, foods, activities and places. Do not expect English academic proficiency just because children speak English fluently. Bilingualism expert Jim Cummins asserts that children develop conversational proficiency, known as BICS, in a couple years, while academic English skills demanded five years of English language instruction. 8

1.1. Language learning in early childhood. Early childhood bilingualism is a reality for millions of children throughout the world. Some children learn multiple languages from earliest childhood; others acquire additional languages when go to school. The acquisition and maintenance of more than one language can open doors to many personal, social and economic opportunities. Children who learn more than one language from earliest childhood are referred to as “simultaneous bilinguals”, whereas those who learn another language later may be called “sequential bilinguals”. There is a considerable body of research on children’s ability to learn more than one language in their earliest years. We sometimes hear people express the opinion that it is too difficult for children to cope with two languages. They fear that the children will be confused or will not learn either language well. However, there is little support for the myth that “learning more than one language in early childhood is a problem for children” 1 . Although some studies show minor early delays for simultaneous bilinguals, there is no evidence that learning two languages substantially slows down their linguistic development or interferes with cognitive and academic development. Indeed many simultaneous bilinguals achieve high levels of proficiency in both languages. Ellen Bialystok and other developmental psychologists have found convincing evidence that bilingualism can have positive effects an abilities that are related to academic success, such as metalinguistic awareness, Limitations that may be observed in the language of bilingual individuals are more likely to be related to the circumstances in which each language is learned than to any limitation in the human capacity to learn more than one language. For example, if one language is heard much more often than the other or is more highly valued in the community, that language may eventually be used better than, or in preference to the other. 1 Genesse, F. There may be reason to be concerned, however, about situations where children cut off from their family language when they are very young. Lily Wong-Fillmore observed that, “when children are submerged in a different language for long periods in pre-school or day care, their development of the family language may be slowed down or stalled before they have developed an age-appropriate mastery of the new language. Eventually they may stop speaking the family language altogether”. 2 Wallace Lambert called this loss of one language on the way to learning another “subtractive bilingualism”. It can have negative consequences for children’s self-esteem and their relationships with family members are also are likely to be affected such early loss of the family language. In these cases, children seem to continue to be caught between two languages: they have not yet mastered the one language, and they have not continued to develop the other” 3 . During the transition period they may fall behind in their academic learning. Unfortunately, the solution educators sometimes propose to parents is that they should stop speaking the family language at home and concentrate instead on speaking the school language with their children. The evidence suggests that a better solution is to strive for additive bilingualism-the maintenance of the home language while the second language is being learned. This is especially true if the parents are also learners of the second language. If parents continue to use the language that they know best, they are able to express their knowledge and ideas in ways that are richer and more elaborate than they can manage in a language they do not know as well. Using their own language in family settings is also a way for parents to maintain their own self- esteem, especially as they may be struggling with the new language outside the Rome, at work, or in the community. language. As Virginia Collier and others have shown, “the process of developing the second language takes years. Bur teachers, parents, and students need to know that the benefits of additive bilingualism will reward patience and effort” 4 . Some second language acquisition theories give primary importance to learner’s innate capacity for language acquisition. Others emphasize the role of environment, especially opportunities to interact with speakers who adapt their language and interaction patterns to meet learners’ needs. Still others focus on learner’s engagement with the broader social context. By definition, all second language learners, regardless of age, have already acquired at least one language. This prior knowledge may be an advantage in the sense that they have an idea of how languages work. On the other hand, knowledge of other languages can lead learners to make incorrect guesses about how the second language works, and this may result in errors that first language learners would not make. Very young language learners begin tasks of the first language begin the tasks of the first language acquisition without the cognitive maturity or metalinguistic awareness that older second language learners have. Although young second language learners have begun to develop these characteristics, as well as in the area of the world knowledge, before they reach levels already attained by adults and adolescents. In addition to possible cognitive differences, there are also attitudinal and cultural differences between children and adults. Most child learners are willing to try to use the language even when their proficiency is quite limited. Many adults and adolescents find it stressful when they are unable to express themselves clearly and correctly. Nevertheless, even very young, pre-school children differ in their willingness to speak a language they do not know well. Some children happily chatter away in their in their new language, others prefer to listen and participate silently in social interaction with their peers. 4 Collier V. How long? Younger learners, in an informal second language- learning environment, are usually allowed to be silent until they are ready to speak. They may also have opportunities to practice their second language voice in songs and games that allow them to blend their voices with those of other children. Older learners are often forced to speak –to meet the requirements of a classroom or to carry out everyday tasks such as shopping, medical visits, or job interviews. Young children in informal settings are usually exposed to the second language for many hours every day. Older learners, especially students receive only limited exposure to the second language. Classroom learners not only spend less time in contact with the language, they also tend to be exposed to a far smaller range of discourse types. For example, class room learners are often taught language that is somewhat formal in comparison to the language as it is used in most social settings. In many foreign language classes, teachers switch to their students first language for discipline or classroom management, thus depriving learners of opportunities to experience uses of the language in real communication. Parents tend to respond to either children’s language in terms of its meaning rather than in terms of accuracy. Similarly, in second language learning outside of classrooms, errors that do not interfere with meaning are usually overlooked. Most people would feel they were being impolite if they interrupted and corrected someone who was trying to have a conversation with them. Nevertheless; interlocutors may react to an error if they cannot understand what the speaker is trying to say. Thus errors of grammar and pronunciation may not be remarked on, but the wrong word choice may receive comment from a puzzled interlocutor. In a situation where a second language speaker intends to be rude or simply does not know the polite way to say what is intended. In this case too, especially between adults, it is unlikely that the second language speaker would be told that something had gone wrong. The only place where feedback on error is the language classroom. Even there, it is not always provided consistently. 12

1.2. Second language acquisition theories. There are several theories that have been proposed to explain the aspects of the language acquisition that are common to all second common language learners and context. We shall look at some theories from cognitive psychology that have increasingly informed second language research in recent years. These cognitivist theories emphasize the way the mind perceives, retains, organizes and retrieves information. Finally, we will look at sociocultural theory, a perspective that places second language acquisition in a larger social context. One of the wide-spread theories is behaviorist theory which explained: “learning in terms of imitation, practice, reinforcement, and habit formation. Much of the early research within behaviorist theory was done with laboratory animals, but the learning process was hypothesized to be the same for humans” 5 . Behaviorism had a powerful influence on second and foreign language teaching, especially in North America, between the 1940s and 1970s. Nelson Brooks and Robert Lado were two proponents of this perspective whose influence was felt directly in the development of audio-lingual teaching materials and teacher training. Classroom activities emphasized mimicry and memorization and students learned dialogues and sentence patterns by heart. Because language development was viewed as the formation of habits formed in the first language and these habits would interfere with the new ones needed for the second language. Thus behaviorism was often linked to the contrastive analysis hypothesis, which was developed by structurallinguists in Europe and North America. According to this theory, where the first language and the target language are similar, learners should acquire target language structures with ease; where there are differences, learners should have difficulty. However, researchers have found that learners do not make all the errors predicted by the Contrastive analysis hypothesis. Instead, many of their actual errors are not predictable on the basis of their first language. Adult second language learners produce sentences that sound more like child’s. By 5 Brooks N. the 1970s, many researchers were convinced that behaviorism and the contrastive analysis hypothesis were inadequate explanations for second language acquisition. Some of these criticisms arose as a result of growing influence of innatist views of language acquisition. The rejection of behaviorism as an explanation for first language acquisition was partly triggered by Chomsky’s critique of it. Chomsky argued that, “innate knowledge of the principles of Universal Grammar permits all children to acquire the language of their environment during a critical period of their development” 6 . While Chomsky did not make specific Claims about the implications of his theory for second language learning Lydia White and other linguists have argued that Universal Grammar offers the best perspective from which to understand second language acquisition. Others, for example Robert Bley-Vroman and Jacquelyn Schachter argue that: “although universal grammar is a good framework for understanding first language acquisition it is not a good explanation for the acquisition of a second language, especially by learners who have passed the critical period”. 7 In their view, this means that “second language acquisition has to be explained by some other theory, perhaps one of the more general psychological theories described below”. 8 Vivian Cook and others point out that, even though many learners fail to achieve complete mastery of the target language, there is still a logical problem of second language acquisition. That is, we need to find an explanation for the evidence that learners eventually know more about the language than they could reasonably have learned if they had to depend entirely on the input they are exposed to. theorists who hold this view claim that the availability of Universal Grammar are the same in first and second language acquisition. Researchers working within the Universal Grammar framework also differ in their hypothesis about how formal instruction or the availability of feedback on their learning will affect learner’s knowledge of the second language. Bonnie Schwartz for example, concludes that, “much instruction and feedback change only the superficial appearance of language performance and do not really affect the underlying systematic knowledge of the new language. Rather, language acquisition is based on the availability of natural language in the learner’s environment”. 9 Lydia White and other scientists who think that “The nature of universal grammar is altered by the acquisition of the first language learners may sometimes need explicit information about what is not grammatical in the second language. Otherwise, they may assume structures of the language have equivalents in the second language when, in fact, they do not”. 10 Researchers who study second language acquisition from a universal grammar perspective are usually interested in the language competence of advanced learners-their complex knowledge of grammar-rather than in the simple language of beginning learners. They are interested in whether the competence that underlies the performance or use of the second languages resembles the competence underlying the language performance of native speakers. Thus, their investigations often involve grammaticality judgments or other methods to probe what learners know about the language rather than observation of speaking. By using such methods, they hope to gain insight into what learners actually know about the language rather than how they happen to use it in a given situation. One model of second language acquisition that was influenced by Chomsky’s theory of first language acquisition was Stephen Krashensky’s Monitor 9 Schwartz B. Model. He first described this model in the early 1970s, at a time there was growing dissatisfaction with language teaching methods based on behaviorism. Krashen described his model in terms of five hypothesis. First in the acquisition-learning hypothesis , Krashen contrasts these two terms: “We acquire as we are exposed to samples of the second language we understand in much the same way that children pick up their first language-with no conscious attention to language form. We “learn” on the other hand through conscious attention to form and rule learning”. 11 Next according to the monitor hypothesis , the acquired system initiates a speaker’s utterance and is responsible for spontaneous language use. The learned acts as an editor or “monitor”, making minor changes and polishing what the acquired system has produced. Such monitoring takes place only when the speaker or writer has plenty of time, is concerned about producing correct language, and has learned the relevant rules. The natural order hypothesis was based on the finding that, as in first language acquisition, second language acquisition unfolds in predictable sequences. The language features that are the easiest the state and thus to learn are not necessarily the first to be acquired. For example, the rule for adding 1to third person singular verbs in the present tense is easy to state, but even some advanced second language speakers fail to apply it in a spontaneous conversation. The input hypothesis is that acquisition occur when one is exposed to one language that is comprehensible and that contains i+l. The “i” represents the level of language already acquired, and the “+l” is a metaphor for language (words, grammatical forms, aspects of pronunciation) that is just a step beyond that level. The fact that some people who are exposed to large quantities of comprehensible input do not necessarily acquire a language successfully is accounted for by Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis. The “affective filter” is a metaphorical barrier that prevents learners from acquiring language even when appropriate input is available. “Affect” refers to feelings, motives, needs, attitudes,, 11 Krashen.S. and emotional states. A learner who is tense, anxious, or bored may “filter out” input, making it unavailable for acquisition. Both psychologists and linguists challenged Krashen’s model. Linguist Lydia White questioned one of his hypothesis in paper called “Against Comprehensible Input”, Psychologist Barry Mc-Laughlin’s article was one of the first to raise the question of “whether the five hypotheses could be tested by empirical research. For example, distinguishing between “acquired, it’s fluent; if it’s fluent, it’s acquired and to a reliance on intuition rather than observable differences in behavior”. 12 In spite of lively criticism and debate, Krashen’s ideas were very influential during a period when second language teaching was in transition from approaches that emphasized learning rules or memorizing dialogues to approaches that emphasized using language with a focus on meaning, since then, communicative language teaching , including immersion and content based instruction has been widely implemented, and Krashen’s ideas have been source of ideas for research in second language acquisition. Classroom research has confirmed that students can make great deal of progress through exposure to comprehensible input without direct instruction. Studies have also shown, however, that students may reach a pant from which they fail to make further progress on some features of the second language. Unless they also have access to guided instruction. Some insight from learning theories developed in psychology help to explain why this maybe so. There exist some current psychological theories on the cognitivist, developmental perspective. Since the 1990s, psychological theories have become increasingly central to research in second language development. Some of these theories use the computer as a metaphor for the mind, comparing language acquisition to the capacities of computers for storing, integrating, and retrieving information. Some draw on neurobiology, seeking to relate observed behavior as directly as possible to brain activity. 12 Mc Laughlin “The Monitor model: Some methodological considerations”. Oxford pp. 309 17

As in first language acquisition, cognitive and developmental psychologists argue that there is no need to hypothesize that humans have a language specific module in the brain or that “acquisition” and “learning” are distinct mental processes. In their view, general theories of learning can account for the gradual development of complex syntax and for leaners in ability to spontaneously use everything they know about a language at a given time. As it mentioned above, some linguists have also concluded that, while universal grammar provide a plausible explanation for first language acquisition, something else is required for second language acquisition since it so often falls short or full success. Cognitive psychologists working in an information processing model of human learning and performance see the second language acquisition as the building up of knowledge that can eventually is called on automatically for speaking and understanding. Norman Segalowitz and others have suggested that learners have to pay attention at first to any aspects of the language that they are trying to understand or produce. “Pay attention in this context is accepted using cognitive resources to process information”. 13 However, there is a limit to how much information a leaner can pay attention to. Thus, at the earliest stages will use most of their resources to understand the main words in a message. In that situation, they may not notice the grammatical morphemes attached to some the words, especially those that do not substantially affect meaning. Gradually, through experience and practice, information that was new becomes easier to process, and learners become able to access it quickly and even automatically. This frees them to pay attention to other aspects of the language that, in turn, gradually become automatic. A number of hypotheses, theories, and models for explaining second language acquisition have been inspired by the cognitivist, developmental perspective. Evelyn Hatch, Michael Long, Teresa Pica and Susan Gass, among others, argue that, “conversational interaction is an essential, if not sufficient, condition 13 Segalowitz N. Automaticity. for second language acquisition.” 14 These researchers have studied the ways in which speakers modify their interaction patterns in order to help learners participate in a conversation or understand some information. M.Long agreed with Krashen that comprehensible input is necessary for language acquisition. However, he focused more on the question of how input could be made comprehensible. He argued that “ modified interaction is the necessary mechanism for making language comprehensible.” 15 That is, what learners need is not necessarily simplification of the linguistic forms but rather an opportunity to interact with other speakers, working together to reach mutual comprehension. According to Long, there is no cases of beginner-level learners acquiring a second language from native-speaker talk has that has not been modified in someway. Richard Schmidt proposed the “noticing hypothesis”, suggesting that, “… nothing is learned unless it has been noticed. Noticing does not itself result in acquisition, but it is the essential starting point”. 16 Schmidt’s original proposal of noticing hypothesis came from his own experience as a learner of Portuguese. After months of taking classes, living in Brazil, and keeping a diary, he began to realize that certain features of language that had been present in the environment for the whole time began to enter his own second language system only when he had noticed them, either because they were brought to his attention in class or because some other experience made them salient. Drawing is on psychological learning theories. Schmidt hypothesized that second language learners could not begin to acquire language feature until they had become aware of it in the input. Susan Gass also described a learning process that begins when learners notice something they hear or see in the second language that is different from what they expected or that fills a gap in their knowledge of the language. 14 Hatch E. discourse analysis and second language acquisition. Vygotsky’s theory assumes that “cognitive development, including language development, arises as a result of social interactions. Primary among these interactions are those between individuals”. 17 Unlike the psychological theories that view thinking and speaking as related but independent processes, sociocultural theory, views speaking and thinking as tightly interwoven. Speaking and writing mediate thinking, which means that people can gain control over theory mental processes as a consequence of internalizing what others say to them and what they say to others. Learning is thought to occur when an individual interacts with an interlocutor within his or her zone of proximal development that is in a situation in which learner is capable of performing at a higher level because there is support from interlocutor. In the end, what all theories of language acquisition are intended to account for is the ability of human learners to acquire language within a variety of social and instructional environments. All of the theories discussed in this chapter use metaphors to represent this invisible reality. Both linguists and psychologists draw some their evidence from neurological research. At present, most of the research on specific brain activity during language processing must be based on indirect evidence. Advances in technology are rapidly increasing opportunities to observe brain activity more directly. Such research will eventually contribute to reinterpretations of research that, until now, can examine only observable behavior. Many claims from behaviorist theory were based on experiments with animals learning a variety of responses to laboratory stimuli. Their applicability to the natural learning of languages by humans was strongly challenged by psychologists and linguists alike, primarily because of the inadequacy of behaviorist models to account for the complexity involved in language learning. Never psychological theories have often involved computer simulations or controlled laboratory experiments where people learn specific sets of carefully chosen linguistsfeatures, often an invented language. does not entitle psychologists to generalize to the complexities of the linguistic knowledge that learners eventually have. Linguists working from an innatistperspective draw much of their evidence from studies of the complexities of proficient speakers’ language knowledge and performance and from analysis of their own intuitions about language. Critics of this view argue that it is not enough to know what the final state of knowledge is and that more attention should be paid the developmental steps leading up to this level of mastery. Interactionists emphasize the role of modification in conversational interactions. This perspective, as well as the sociocultural perspective, provides insight into the ways in which learners can gain access to new knowledge about the language when they have support from an interlocutor. Some critics of the interactionist position argue that much of what learners need to know is not available in the input, and so they put greater emphasis on innate principles of language that learner can draw on. Researchers and educators who are hoping for language acquisition theories that give them insight into language teaching practice are often frustrated by lack of agreement among the ‘experts’. The complexities of second language acquisition, like those of first language acquisition, represent puzzles that scientists will continue to work on for a long time. Research that has theory development as its goal has important long-term significance for language teaching and learning, but agreement on a ‘complete’ theory of language acquisition in probably, at best, a long way off. Even if such agreement were reached, there would still be questions about how the theory should be interpreted for language teaching practice. Many teachers watch theory development with interest, but must continue to teach and plan lessons and access students’ performance in the absence of a comprehensive theory of second language learning. Linguist Noam Chomsky challenged old ideas about language acquisition in his first book, “Syntactic Structure,” published in 1957. He rejects the notion that all language must be learned a fresh by each child. Chomsky says, normal children everywhere are born with a kind of hard-wired syntax that enables them to grasp the basic working of language. The child then chooses the particular grammar and language of the environment from the available options in the brain. Thus the capacity for language is a biological inheritance and specific languages are then activated largely through the child’s interaction with the native environment. It’s as if the child’s brain is a CD player already set to “play” language; when the CD for a certain language is inserted, that is the language that the child learns. Chomsky advanced his “government – binding” theory in a 1981 book in which he says a child’s native knowledge of syntax consists of a group of linguistic principles that define the form of any language. These principles are connected with parameters, or “switches,” triggered by the child’s language environment. Chomsky stresses the importance of the child’s genetic inheritance of the syntax imprint for Chomsky, the “growth” of language is analogous to the growth of internal organs and arms and legs-determined by internal mechanisms but nourished by the environment, whether verbal or nutritional. Chomsky sees language development in the child as a separate aspect of knowledge, apart from the rest of cognition, or mental function. Chomsky says knowing a language is synonymous with the capacity to produce an infinite number of sentences never previously spoken, and to understand sentences never before heard. This ability is what Chomsky calls the “creative” aspects of language. Chomsky’s concept clashes directly with that of behaviorist B.F.Skinner, who espoused the idea that language is a direct result of conditioning, and with psychologist Jean Piaget, viewed language acquisition as a part of overall cognitive development in children. 22

His theory that children use an innate “language acquisition device” to select a grammar from a limited range of options has come under fire. Chomsky’s idea of a “generative grammar” presupposes the brain operates in a binary fashion, like a computer. Critics say this conflicts with evolutionary anthropology that views language acquisition as a gradual adaptation of the brain and vocal chords – not a spectrum of binary choices. In the half – century since Chomsky’s theory was first proposed, debate about the origins of language has shifted away from an emphasis on innate capabilities and toward a greater awareness of the role of learning. Language acquisition is now perceived as a process more complex than binary choices that requires more cognition, or thinking. 23

1.3. Effective ways to teach a child English as a Second language 1. Introduce English at a young age. Studies have shown that children who are exposed to English or another English before the age of 10 have a better chance of learning to speak without an accent. The developing brain of a child undergoes physiological changes at the onset of adolescence that make it more difficult to distinguish and reproduce many of the sounds of a foreign language. Consequently, if you expose your child to hearing native- spoken English from an early age, it will be that much easier to teach him to speak like a native. It’s also important to start teaching English as a second language early, because young children have an easier time learning languages than adolescents or adults. This is because young children are still using their intrinsic language- learning skills to acquire their first languages. They quickly realize they can use these same skills when learning English. 2. Exposure equals understanding. The more exposure your child has to English more she will begin to understand. When children learn a new language, they will typically understand more than they can speak. In the beginning, most children will have what is known as a “silent period” in which they will listen to English being spoken and may respond nonverbally or in their primary language, but they will not speak English. It’s important to allow this period to run its course without interference. Don’t force your child to speak to you or others in English. Instead, focus on providing your child with as much exposure to the language as possible. That way your child can acquire English naturally. Social activities with native English speakers provide a relaxed opportunity for your child to hear English without the pressure of having to speak it. Participate in casual activities life dinners, barbecues or parties with native English speakers on a regular basis. Allow your child to interact with both children and adults who 24

speak English so he can become more comfortable and less self-conscious in English-speaking environments. 3. Reading fundamental Reading aloud regularly to your child teaches valuable language skills in any language. When trying to raise a bilingual child, reading aloud is crucial. From as early on as possible, you should read books that are in English and the child’s primary language. If possible, reading the same story translated into both languages can provide added interest for the child and the opportunity to compare both languages. Take advantage of story time at your local library or bookstore to make reading more engaging. Most children sitting with a group of other kids listening to a story and hearing English spoken by variety of different native voices can also be helpful. This is a great opinion for parents who do not speak English well themselves. Visits to the library or bookstore also give your child the chance to participate in choosing books to take home, which in turn will make him more enthusiastic about reading at home. 4. Make learning English fun. Becoming bilingual should always be a positive experience for your child, or she could learn to resent it. To that end should strive to make learning English as fun as possible. Set up play dates with other children who speak the same primary language as your child but are also learning English as a second language. Engage them in an activity while speaking English. If you don’t speak English well, invite a friend who does participate. Singing songs and reciting nursery rhymes is another way to get your child engaged in learning English. How children learn English A child’s process of learning English is distinct from other children’s according to the British Council’s guide to helping children learn English. Factors such as the child’s age, learning style, interests and personality affect the English language acquisition process. 25

However, many English languages-learners follow a similar process of language development and this can help educators develop ideal techniques for English language instructions. Judie Haynes, author of “stages of Second Language Development”, outlines the features of children’s English language acquisition. Stage1 is pre-production, when children have up to 500 words vocabulary they comprehend but do not use. Stage2, early production is defined by children using short phrases and chunks of language they have memorized. Stage3, speech emergence, begin with asking children simple questions and forming sentences. Stage4, intermediate fluency, features more complex phrases. Children express their thoughts in speech and writing. Stage5, advanced fluency, sees the child speaking, reading and writing with academic proficiency. Time frame Language acquisition researcher and author Jim Cummins asserts that many educators make errors when determining when and if a child has mastered learning English. He states that basic interpersonal communicative skills and cognitive academic language proficiency are two different indicators, of English comprehension. BICS is often referred to as “playground English”. Mastery of BICS may take as a little as few months. However this level of proficiency does not immediately transfer to the mastery of academic English necessary for success in the classroom. Academic English proficiency, or CALP, takes a minimum of about five years of English language immersion and direct instruction. Motivation plays a key role in the process of learning English. Instructors should endeavor to keep language learning low-stress, fun and interesting. Draw upon students’ read, write speak in English. 26

According to education researcher Howard Gardner, children absorb new information in diverse ways. Learning English does not just demand linguistic interaction. Children can learn English and transfer rules of English from short- term to long-term memory through visual activities; bodily/ kinesthetic techniques; logical-mathematical instruction; interpersonal approaches; and music lessons. Linguistic expert Stephen Krashen points out of the danger of over- correcting children as they learn English. Jumping into the correct every mistake raises children’s affective filter, and can be intimediting. Educators can provide corrective feedback by planning mini-lessons around typical grammatical errors and by consistently modeling correct usage. If you are trying to teach English to small kids, the good news is children are incredibly adapted to learning languages, and grammar structures easily. The bad news is that kids have a lot of energy and shorter attention span than adults, so you will struggle to get them to sit and study. However, you can use the kid’s energy to your advantage and engage them with games, songs and activities that will help them to learn while having fun. First of all, immerse the kids in the English language over adults because they rapidly pick up new words from conversation around them. Create productive learning environment by exposing kids to English through classroom conversation, age-appropriate DVDs and videos. Secondly, use music and songs to help to teach small kids English. According to super simple songs: “Young learners pick up vocabulary, grammatical structures and the rhythm of the languages simply by doing what they already love to do“. It’s advisable to use songs to teach numbers, the alphabets, body parts and other words requiring memorization. English teachers must use motions and gestures during the lesson to reinforce learning. Action further enhances the child’s ability to remember by adding physical association to the word, and it helps small kids use up energy so they do not get fidgety or distracted. 27

Furthermore teacher should build an interactive environment for the children “Transition Abroad” advises teachers to: “Have them standing up and sitting down, weave games and dramatic play singing into your lessons. Have the children take turns helping you prepare or carry out the activity or project. This helps the kids stay focused and offers additional opportunities for language learning as they fellow directions, learn the rules for games and communicate about the activities they are doing. One more important thing isto ask the children to take charge by having them lead activities such as Pictionary, charades and hangman and matching games to teach grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses. Allowing children to demonstrative their learning will build confidence and give them real-life language skills. Team games build conversational skills as students communicate with each other in the course of the game. English teacher should take account:Always talk to the kids in English. Give small rewards for effort and accomplishment. Keep structured lessons short. Small kids do not use perfect grammar in their native language so do not expect them do not so in English. By the time your child reaches preschool age, she likely knows the main parts of body, including hands, feet, ears, nose and eyes. Many preschoolers will delight in learning the more complex body parts, such as elbow, armpit, ankle or kneecap. You can incorporate in several fun activities into your child’s day to help her to learn the different parts of her body. As she learns the names of body parts, add more parts to the activities to keep her engaged and interested. While teaching pre-school children English, teachers must follow these rules: Point to each part of a child’s body and tell him the name of it. Start at the top of his head and work your way down to his toes. Have your child take a turn by pointing to one of his body parts asking him what it is called tickle him when he gets the answer right to encourage him to have fun with the activity. 28

Make flashcards to teach your child body parts. Cut out pictures of different parts of the body from magazines and glue them index cards. Show your child each flashcard and challenge her to tell of the name the body part and point to that part of her own body. Make the activity more challenging by giving your child clues, such as “you use me to smell ” suggests Lynne R. Weaver author of “ Rhymes, Riddles and Reasoning activities to make kids think, Grade Pre.K ”. Play games that focus on body parts. Draw pictures of a body on a large piece of a butcher paper or poster board. Give a child a bean bag, call out a body part and have your child through the bean bag on to the poster board so it lands on that body part, suggests KatheyCharner, author of “The Giant Encyclopedia of Theme Activities for children 2 to 5: Over 600 Favorite Activities Created by Teachers for Teachers”. Try on alternate game by having your child throw the bean bag and then call out what body part it lands on. Play Simon says by telling your child to put his hand on different parts of the body by having him move different parts of the body or by having him move different parts of his body. Trace the child by having her lay down on a large piece of butcher paper. Give her crayons and encourage her to color herself in. Have the child tell you the name of each body part and label them accordingly. Point to different parts and challenge her to tell you the name of each one. The English teacher should talk about what each part of the body does while you and the child go about your daily activities to help reinforce the activities you have done with him. Tell him that you are using your nose to smell dinner and that he is using his ears to hear his bedtime story. Do not make any body parts off limits. Answer the child’s questions but also instruct her what parts of her body are private and should not be shown to others. Things you will need to teach body parts: Index cards, pictures of body parts, glue, poster board,marker, bean bag, butcher paper, crayons. 29

English teachers must take into account following steps to teach kids the letter song . The alphabet is the most basic component of pre-leteracy; to be able to read, you must first learn the letters. Most kids like music and according to the British Council, may be more motivated to learn- any subject- if it’s presented to them through music. The letter song is a device to teach kids the alphabet while enjoying the sensory experiences of music. You can expose your children to music and the alphabet song at any age, even before they can speak. An English teacher should buy, borrow or download a recording of the letter song they want to teach their kids. Play it as background music in the car, during playtime or at other periods of the day without calling attention to the music. Some children may not appear to be listening to the song or may not consciously pay attentionto the music, but he will unknowingly become familiar with the tune just from hearing it as part of his background noise. Make flashcards that will help you teach the kids the alphabet. Write down each letter of the alphabet- capitals and lower- case forms- on a separate index card, using colorful markers or crayons. The British Council suggests using worksheets or other visuals to encourage alphabet practice when teaching children English. Sing the letter song to the kids, slowly and clearly so they can understand what you are saying and learn the tune. Encourage them to clap in time to the music or hum along if they don’t know the letters yet. Kids Health from Nemours explains that toddlers especially like to experience music rather than just listen to it passively. Young children like repetition, so be prepared to sing the alphabet song over and over again. Place your flashcards- each letter as it comes up in the song- on a table on the floor as you sing to the tune of the song. Your child will not only learn how to enunciate each letter but what it looks like in writing as well. 30

Reinforce the tune of the alphabet song by using the same note patterns for other purposes. For example, you can sing, rather than say to your children “let’s sing an alphabet song together now” in the tune of the ABC song to help them get used to the tune Things teacher will need are: Musical recordings, markers and crayons, index cards. 31

Chapter II. Teaching English to children of elementary level Language acquisition is one of the most impressive and fascinating aspect of human development. We listen with pleasure to the sounds made by a three- month-old baby. We laugh and “answer” the conversational “ ba-ba-ba” babbling of older babies, and we share in the pride and joy of parents whose one-year-old has uttered the first “bye-bye”. Indeed, learning a language is an amazing feat - one that has attracted the attention of linguistic and psychologists for generations. How do children accomplish this? What enables a child not only to learn words, but to put them together in meaningful sentences? What pushes children to go on developing complex grammatical language even though their early simple communication is successful for most purposes? Does child language develop similarly around the world? How do bilingual children acquire more than one language? In this chapter, we will look briefly at some of the characteristics of the language of young children. We will then consider several theories that have been offered as explanations for how language is learned. There is an immense body of research on child language. Although much research has been done in middle class North American and European families, there is a reach body of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural research as well. Researchers have travelled all over the world to observe, record, and study children’s early language development. Our purpose in this chapter is to touch on a few main points in this research, primarily as a preparation for the discussion of Second Language acquisition, which is the focus of this book. The first three years: Milestones and developmental sequences One remarkable thing about first language acquisition is the high degree of similarity in the early language of children all over the world. Researchers have 32

described developmental sequences for many aspects of first language acquisition. The earliest vocalizations are simply the involuntary crying that soon, however, we hear the cooing and gurgling sounds of contented babies, lying in their beds looking at fascinating shapes and movement around them. Even though they have little control over the sounds they make in these early weeks of life, infants are able to hear very subtle differences between the sounds of human languages. In cleverly designed experiments, Peter Eimas and his colleagues (1971) demonstrated that that tiny babies can hear the difference between “pa” and “ba”, for example. And yet, it may be many months before their own vocalizations (babbling) begin to reflect the characteristics of the language or languages they hear. By the end of their first year, most babies understand quite a few frequently replaced words. They wave when someone says, “bye-bye”; the clap when someone says “pat-a cake”; they eagerly hurry to the kitchen when “juice and cookies” are mentioned. At twelve months, most babies will have begun to produce a word or two that everyone recognizes. By the age of two, most children reliably produce at least fifty different words and some produce many more. About this time, they begin to combine words into simple sentences such as “Mommy juice” and “baby fall down”. These sentences are sometimes called “telegraphic” because they leave out such things as articles, prepositions, and auxiliary verbs. We recognize them as sentences because, even though function words and grammatical morphemes are missing, the word order reflects the word of the language they are hearing and the because the combined words have meaning relationship that makes them more than just a list of words. Thus, for an English speaking child, “kiss baby” doesn’t mean the same as “baby kiss”. Remarkably, we also see evidence, even in these early sentences,that children are doing more than imperfectly imitating what they have heard. Their two or three word sentences show sign that they can creatively combine words. For example, “more outside” may mean “I want to go outside 33

again”. Depending on this situation “Daddy uh-oh ” might mean “Daddy fell down” or “Daddy dropped something” or even “Daddy please do that funny thing where you pretend to drop me off your lap”. As children progress through the discovery of language in their first three years, there are predictable patterns in the emergence and development of many features of the language they are learning. For some language features, these patterns have been described in terms of developmental sequences or “stages”. To some extent, these stages in language acquisition are related to children’s cognitive development. For example, children do not use temporal adverbs such as “tomorrow” “last week” until they develop some understanding of time. 2.1. Methods and techniques of teaching pre-school children The problem how to teach a foreign language to pre-school children and the children of a primary school has not been solved either in this country or abroad, though some methodologists and teachers have shown an interest in it and there are some books, papers and theses dealing with this problem. In our country the interest for teaching young children a foreign language was aroused soon after the first schools with a number of subjects taught in a foreign language were opened in our Republic after the independence. Experience has proved that the earlier the children begin to learn a language, the better they master it. Some teachers volunteered to instruct children in a foreign language in kindergartens. It is necessary to distinguish between teaching pre-school children in the kindergarten and teaching children in primary grades in the elementary schools, as there are some psychological age characteristics which should be taken into account. Here some of them. 1.A child of 5 or 6 easily learn words and sentences of a foreign language and associate them directly with the things, actions, etc. he learns a sentence as a sense unit without any strain as easily as he learns isolated words. He encounters the same difficulty in learning the sentences: My name is Mike. I like this black 34

cat. Give me a bear, please and words a cat, a bear. Moreover, it is easier for a child to learn a sentence than isolated words. This phenomenon does not occur in the elementary school. The children of primary classes are more careful in their speech. They use either English or Uzbek sentences. 2. The imitative ability of pre-school children is better than that of school children. They experience fewer difficulties in the assimilation of English pronunciation. Besides, they like to repeat sounds, words and sentences. They try to pronounce in imitation of the teacher, and they usually succeed in imitating. Teaching pronunciation to school children is also based on their imitative abilities though some explanation may be given. Thus, the teacher may not only show his pupils how to pronounce, but explain to the children how to produce this or that sound. For example, place the tongue a little bit back, while producing [a:] – car. 3. The natural activity of a child of 5-6 is a play. He lives in a world of various games. Moreover, if the child helps grown-ups in doing a room, cleaning a garden, in dusting chairs, watering plants, etc., he is playing because he pretends to be a grown-up. In teaching the English language to pre-school children the teacher must take this factor into consideration and suggest different games to them. This is one of the ways to make them learn words and sentences in a foreign language. Playing is, therefore, the best motivation for children to work to assimilating the language. A child of 7-9 likes playing very much as well. He can and must work hard, however, in overcoming the difficulties he encounters. He is taught to do many things: to read, to write in in the mother tongue, count, make various things of paper, etc. therefore in teaching him English playing, though very important, is not the only means to encourage him to learn the language. Various exercises should be performed alongside. In teaching English to pre-school children in the kindergarten the aural-oral method is used since spoken language is the aim, the only means, and the only 35

approach available here. No speech is possible unless the speaker associates a word with the thing it denotes, or a sentence with the thought it expresses directly within the target language so the direct method is most natural here. It must be born in mind, however, that the use of the method requires a careful, thorough selection of the material for the pupils to assimilate. Its amount for each lesson must be within the children’s ability to retain the linguistic material the teacher introduces. The teacher must strictly follow the rule: “never pass to new material until your pupils have thoroughly assimilated the previous one”. For example, at the English lesson the teacher tried to apply the direct method. The children were able to answer the teacher questions of the What is it? type. Teacher: What is it? Class: It is a book (a dog, a cat, a pen) The new material the teacher was going to present was a general question: Is it a pen (a dog, a cat, etc.)? What did the teacher do? She took a pen and holding it in her hand asked: Is it a pen? Seeing no response she repeated this question several times which did not help either. So the teacher was obliged to turn to Uzbek: Men nimadedim? The children answered at once: Qaniruchka? Their answer was logically justified, because they had learned What is it? question and now they naturally expected to learn the question with qani?. So the teacher had to translate this question and the questions following. Then she asked the children to repeat the question several times. The method did not work because it was applied in the wrong way. The teacher should have done the following if she wanted her pupils to understand the question of that type directly. She should first ask and answer question herself: Is it a pen? Yes, it is. It is a pen. (She takes a pen.) Is it a pencil? Yes, it is. It is a pencil. (She takes a pencil.) Sometimes the method fails, however. And this is not usually due to its drawbacks as a method but to unskilled application, on the part of the teacher. Is it a pen? No, it is not. It is a pencil. (She holds a pencil.) Is it a pencil? (She takes a pen again.) No, it is not. It is a pen. 36

And so, children! Is it a pen? (She addresses the group.) Yes, it is. (The group answers.) The pupils follow the teacher’s questions and answers. They listen to her attentively and try to understand what she says. Time is not wasted as they listen to the spoken language and make efforts to understand it. Soon by their faces the teacher sees they have grasped the question. Then drill exercises are performed by the pupils to retain the new material. This example shows that in the hands of unexperienced teacher the method does not work. The use of the direct method requires skill and experience on the part of the teacher, more than that, his emotion and enthusiasm. If the teacher does not possess such qualities he had better not work with small children with whom these qualities are a must. There are many techniques the teacher can use in teaching English to pre- school children, such as: 1. Show me (him, her, Bobur, Aziza) a doll (a bear, flag, etc.). – The child the teacher calls on must show the object. In this way the teacher checs comprehension. 2. Name the thing. – The teacher points to a thing, a child names the thing either with a single word (a doll, a car, a bag) or with a sentence (It is a dog; It is a doll; or This is a dog; This is a doll.). the pupils fulfill the teacher’s request in turn. In this way the teacher checks both comprehension and reproduction, i.e., the children’s ability to say a word or a sentence. 3. Guess what is it. The teacher names some qualities of an object the children may see in their room. The children are to name this object in English. Teacher: It is a big and yellow and has no tail. Children: A bear (in chorus). This exercise is very useful. It develops pupils’ ability to analyze the situation given in a foreign language and to find the word required in their memory. The children’s responses at the same time help the teacher check their progress in 37

language learning (their knowledge of vocabulary and comprehension of English at hearing). 4. Speak about an object. – The teacher either shows some object or the child sees it in a picture. He says: It is a cat. The cat is black. I like it. It’s nice (or, I don’t like it. It is ugly.). The children speak in turn. In this way the teacher develops their speech at the utterance level. 5. Answer the questions. – The teacher asks questions and the children answer them. These questions may be: Is it a…? Have you a…? Has he (she, Aziza…) a…? What is it? Where is the…? What color is the…? Of course the questions are introduced gradually. The way the children answer shows the teacher how they have assimilated the material. 6.Ask a question. – The teacher shows object or pictures to the children. They ask questions in turn. This work is not so difficult, because they reproduce the models they have assimilated in listening to the teacher asking questions. 7. Say a rhyme. – A child or children say a rhyme. Their recitation may be accompanied by some movements. 8. Sing a song. – Children sing a song. Singing may be followed by dancing or some movements expressing the idea of this or that sentence in the song. The programmeon a foreign languages for primary schools states: The aim of the foreign language lessons in primary schools is to develop pupils’ skills in understanding English speech and participating in conversation based on the topics covered. As a result of teaching children should be able: 38

9. To understand the teacher’s speech, carry out the teacher’s direction (instruction), understand short oral stories on the material and topics include in the programme. 10. To ask and answer questions on the pictures. 11. To use the sentences they learned during the lesson and know the isolated words these sentences include. 12. To recite a poem assimilated orally. 13. To read words and sentences assimilated orally. The content of teaching. Children must learn about 600-800 sentences and phraseological units and 350-500 word units. The following topics are suggested: 1 st – 2 nd forms. Room.Toys.Meals.Dressing.Going for a walk. (The topics are covered through playing shop and guests.) 3 rd form. Family.Season.Nature.Animals. (they are covered through playing too.) 4 th form. School.Sports.Holidays.(Through playing during the lessons.) During the first two years pupils assimilate the language orally. (It is better to begin studying a foreign language with the 2 nd form. The teacher begins with the 1 st form provided there are people who studied the language in the kindergarten.) In the 3 rd and the 4 th forms they are taught to read. Flashcards and the alphabet in pictures should be widely used for teaching children to read. The following plan of teaching is suggested: 1 st form: 5-20min., 4-5 periods a week; 2 nd form: 25-30min., 4periods a week; 3 rd , 4 th forms: 40-45 min., 4 periods a week. 39

The group should consist of 13-20 pupils. The method and techniques the teacher should use in teaching children of primary school are similar to those applied in teaching pre-school children, i.e., the aural- oral method, and various techniques which can develop pupils’ listening comprehension and speaking. Games should be more complicated, for instance, the teacher can use lotto, dominoes, the game Check your answer and others. Guessing games can be widely used. Pupils are also given various exercises, connected with the situational use of words and sentence patterns. Various audio-visual aids and materials are to be used. Naturally English or any other foreign language can be taught in kindergartens and primary classes (except those in specialized schools) if parents want their children to learn the language, and they are ready to pay teacher for the lessons. 2.2. Kids’ English- a new type of manual Kids’ English Class1 is the first book in a series of English books for primary classes. It consists of Pupil’s Book, Teacher’s Book and Multimedia DVD resource. Kids’ English Class 1 has been developed to fulfill the Resolution № 1875 signed by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 10.12.2012 “About the measures on further development of foreign language teaching and learning system”. Kids’ English Class1 is based on the Uzbekistan State Standards and line with the requirements of CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages). In accordance with the above mentioned Class1 has been designed to develop speaking and listening skills without reading and writing. All instructions in English are given for teachers. Kids’ English has been created by the initiative of the Resolution № 1875 of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 10 December 2012 “about the measures on further development of foreign language teaching and learning system”. 40

Kids’ English 1 is based on the State Educational Standards and syllabus for foreign languages that were developed in February 2013 in accordance with the above mentioned Resolution and in line with requirements of the CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for languages. Kids’ English is the first book in a series of books for primary classes (1-4 classes) of English. It consists of a Pupil’s Book, Teacher’s Book, Multimedia DVD and a pack of didactic material, it provides material for up to 66 hours of study, arranged in a flexible way to cater for faster and slower classes. The Pupil’s Book is divided mainly into 14 units covering 56 lessons and 10 revision lessons. Each lesson of the book is designed for 45 minutes totaling 66 hours of study which are enough for Year. Each unit is broken down into 4 lessons. Each lesson takes up two pages with the exception of revision lessons which are on one page each. The units are divided into as follows: 1 st Term (18hours): 4units +2revision lesson; 2 nd Term (14hours): 3units+2revision lessons; 3 rd Term (18hours): 4units +2revesion lessons; 4 th Term (16hours): 3units+ 2revesion lessons; The order of the units and lessons progresses from simple to complex according to the level of difficulty of themes and the units and consistency or grammatical structures. The first three lessons of the units contain new vocabulary and grammatical structures. As regards to the last lesson, i.e.4 th lesson, it’s titled “Let’s play” which can be considered as a small recycling within the unit. During “Let’s play” lessons, pupils play language practice lessons of the unit by preparing posters, drawing or coloring pictures, role-playing, etc. Revision lessons are designed for revising the language materials of the preceding units and do not contain new vocabulary or grammar. They are supposed to develop the attained skills through different interesting activities. 41

At the back of the Pupil’s Book there are parent’s Corners for every lesson which are designed for parents. They include tips for parents on how to handle with their child’s homework. The Multimedia DVD contains natural recordings of texts, dialogues, videos, etc performed by kids, native speakers of English and by good Uzbek speakers of English. If the teachers do not have Multimedia DVD, they can read out the tapescript themselves. All tapescripts are included in the Teacher’s Book. The Multimedia DVD is designed for use during the lesson. The Teacher’s Book is an essential part of the Kids’ English 1 package. Teachers must have and use it in order to conduct their classes effectively. The Teacher’s Book contains objective of every lesson and activity, tapescripts for the Multimedia DVD and clear explanations for teachers on how to organize the activities in the Pupil’s Book and suggestions for faster/slower classes/ pupils. At the primary level learning another language must be as close to a natural way of learning mother tongue as possible. More than that learning a foreign language in class 1 is very different from the language without learning language without learning ABC, reading or writing. Class 1 children will learn the language through the language through actions, role plays, listening to stories, songs, poems and various language games. Multimedia technologies play a very important role in achieving the goals. Kid’s English encourages leaner-centered approach to teaching. What does this mean? We feel that in the past there has been too much focus on the role of the teacher in the learning process and not enough on the learners themselves. Of course teachers are very important too research s have shown that pupils learn to communicate more effectively if they are given frequent opportunities to practice and experiment with new language. So the learner-centered methodology used in Kid’s English aims to put the pupils- the learners – at the center of most things that happen in the classroom. 42

For this reason Kids’ English contains many activities, exercises and games, which is encourage using the new language naturally through working in pairs or in groups. Of course teachers will still need to present new vocabulary and structures to their pupils, but in the learner-centered classroom they will also spend a lot of time organizing and monitoring pair and group work. One of the reasons that pupils are often unsuccessful in real life communication is that the types of interaction they are most used to as follows: a) The teacher lectures a class. The interactions all to the teacher or through the teacher. b) The teacher asks one of the pupils to come to the front of the class and either listens to her/him or talks with her/him. c) The teacher listens to or talks with one of the pupils, who remain at her/his desk. d) The teacher asks two pupils to speak to each other. If pupils are asked to speak to each other they usually take turns in speaking rather than communicating naturally. Moreover, the teacher is at hand, listening to everything that is being said. The following illustrations of some types of classroom interaction should help to show that in most cases only one interaction at a time takes places in the classroom and that the teacher is usually one of the speakers. Here we see the type of interaction is appropriate for the group-work activities in Kid’s English. As can be seen, the teacher is free to listen, monitor, think ahead, re-plan the next stages and hear her pupils teaching one another the vocabulary and the grammar they know. While communicative activities are in progress, the teacher no longer “teaches”, she/he organizes, set up activities and “monitors” them discreetly, that is she/he listen to the pupils and makes sure that everything is in order. The teacher 43

should help only if she/he quite certain that his/her pupils can not manage on their own. The teacher should be like the conductor of an orchestra: conduct but not play. Many teachers nowadays find it difficult to decide whether they should or should not correct every error their pupils make. In the traditional classroom the emphasis is usually on accuracy and all mistakes are corrected immediately. The problem with this is that a lot of pupils will be reluctant to speak for fear of making mistakes and being corrected. In the learner- centered classroom, where pupils are being encouraged to use English in real communication fluency is just as important as accuracy. We are not suggesting that correction should be abandoned, but that it can be postponed until after the communication activities. If teachers do this then they will not be constantly interrupting their pupils make so we suggest teachers note them down as they walk around the classroom. At the end of activity they can point out some of the common or more important mistakes they noted. In a learner-centered classroom noise is inevitable and should be seen as a good thing provided it is controlled and constructive. Teachers should train their pupils to speak quietly and politely during pair and group work are be ready with additional tasks for those who finish their work early. If teachers give clear instructions tasks without confusion and unnecessary noise, therefore, teachers should clear rules on how they expect pupils to talk to them and to one another. The author of Kid’s English believes that English is best learned through English so we expect the teacher to use English as much as possible in the classroom. Of course there are some instances where pupils will need explanation or clarification in their mother tongue. However we hope that teachers will try to resist the temptation to translate everything. However we hope that teachers will try to resist the temptation everything. Research has shown that pupils learn more effectively if they are encouraged to work out meaning for themselves. 44

The following principles must be taken into consideration as general principles of Kid’s English: I) immersion; II) listening precedes speaking; III) learning through actions; IV) constructing reality. Principle 1 Immersion The main principle is immerging children into the target languages. Immersion can be done through use of multi-sensory channels: auditory, visual, kinesthetic. Children must be actively involved in all activities which will ensure left and right sides of the brain involvement. Principle 2 Listening Precedes speaking Speaking should not be forced. Children must through natural way of learning the target language: first they listen and internalize the language. As they internalize a cognitive map of the target language through understanding what is heard, there will be a readiness to speak. The children will start spontaneously produce utterances. The transactions from listening to speaking will have several steps of development. First the child will listen and respond exclusively with physical actions and later with simple one-word utterances such as “yes” or “no”. After these steps of cognitive brain work readiness to speak will arise. Principle 3 Learning through actions Understanding must be developed through movements of the learner’s body. Researchers found out that most grammatical structures of the target language and hundreds of vocabulary items can be learned through the skillful use of the imperative by the teacher. This method was successfully adopted in many countries across the world and got enormous feedback. Huge amount of scientific researches were done, lots of books and articles published, as well as films showing impressive results of learners. A child learns own language by exposure to the language and through action which follow language utterances. Language input followed by a body 45

movement allows awareness including phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. A few exposure to a language sample in the context of body movement ensures: a) the comprehension of novel sentences; b) unusually long-term retention; c) the linguistic achievement was accomplished seemingly without effort- in a stress free activity. Principle4 Constructing reality Children can not learn if someone will just tell or explain reality to them. They must construct reality through first-hand experience. The world famous Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget called this process of language acquisition constructing reality. The approach must simulate a natural way of the process in which language was imprinted upon body movements. Children can decode the language through the medium of body movement such as looking, pointing, touching, walking and others. They can express themselves by the same medium until readiness to speak in the target language takes place. The Common European Framework divides learners into three board division that can be divided into six levels: A Basic User: A1 Breakthrough or beginner A2 Waystage or elementary B Independent User: B1 Threshold or intermediate B2 Vantage or upper-intermediate C Proficient User: C1 Effective Operational Proficiency or advanced C2 Mastery or Proficiency 46

The CEFR describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level. These descriptors can apply to any of the language spoken in Europe, and there are translations in many languages. Tittles of the lessons and units They focus on the new vocabulary, phrase or grammar structure to be introduced in the lesson. They are designed to help teachers to understand what lessons will be about. Use of pictures In Kids’ English all pictures serve a language learning function. There are no pictures just for decoration. The pictures must be used actively during the lessons both by teachers and pupils. Misusing or neglecting the pictures will reduce the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Songs At this age songs are very effective way or means of learning English. They help them memorize the vocabulary or structures very easily although they do not know how to read or write. For this reason the early lessons in Kids’ English start with songs where pupils sing and at the same time and learn how to greet. Topical songs can be met nearly in all lessons through the Pupil’s Book. First pupils listen to song. During the next two lessons pupils listen and repeat the same song in the final lesson pupils will sing the songs themselves. Look/watch and do Look/watch and do activities are carried out through imitating the teacher’s actions or watching videos in the DVD. It’s really useful both for the teacher and the pupils to watch the videos in the DVD before doing such activities because they will help them understand and perform the activity correctly. 47

Matching activities In this kind of activities pupils match the pictures and the other pictures for the new words by guessing the meaning. When they finish they should check their answers you or with their partners to find out whether they guessed right or wrong. This activity is much more fun than the traditional method in which the teacher gives the meaning of the new words. It also helps to develop the pupil’s cognitive skills. Using one language to learn another is an important skill in foreign language learning. Listen and repeat Listen and repeat activities are mostly done after pupils know the meaning of the words or structures. Researches show that we memorize better if new words or structures are listened and repeated once pupils know the meaning of the new words or structures. Chain Drill This activity is used frequently. Chain drill is a good way of dealing with new language or structure. They can be done very quickly. Chain Drills are class activity. The teacher introduces new material. For example: “I like apples” the teacher practices this with one pupil. She says “I like apples” “What about you?” The pupil answers for himself and asks the question. The teacher answers for himself and practices this structure with this pupil again, the other pupils watch and listen to him. After that the teacher can ask the pupils to do the procedure like this: P1: “I like apples”. (Turns to the next pupil) “What about you? or And you?” P2: “I like bananas”. (Turns to the next pupil) “What about you? or And you?” P3: “I like oranges” (Turns to the next pupils) “What about you? or And you? ” And so on. 48

Games Game activities are used in Kids’ English for three purposes: to warm the class at the beginning of the lesson, to practice or language or a structure which is being studied in the lesson and to recycle the learnt material. These activities make lessons interesting and fun and often also offer the opportunity to drill language thoroughly. They increase the pupil’s interest and encourage them to learn more. Drawing Some activities especially right hand pages in the book require pupils to draw or color. We have noticed that most pupils of this age do it willingly as it adds fun and variety to a lesson. If however some pupils reluctant you should explain that is not necessary to be a good artist to make quick, simple drawings. When pupils need to be more artistic, you should give them more time and encourage them to think hard about their design. Also try to make sure that there is at least one pupil with a talent for drawing in each group. Pronunciation At this stage, as pupils just start learning English, pronunciations is basically done after pupils have learnt the meaning of words through repeating after the DVD or the teacher. Research shows that it is effective and easier to learn how to pronounce words when pupils practice with words they already know. Since pupils don’t know how to read or write at this stage they are not given such homework which makes them do so. However, the author of Kid’s English consider it right to give pupils simple homework such as drawing coloring pictures and remembering the target language they learned in class. The sale purpose of such homework is to help pupils remember or bring back to their memories the 49

language material they learned during the lesson through working on the drawings, which any child would love to do with pleasure. Therefore, it’s essential for the teacher to check pupils have coped with the homework and encourage them by saying that they done it very well and putting marks. If teachers do not check the homework, pupils will stop doing it. Pupils will make mistakes in their homework as they experiment with new things they have learned. Every mistake is a learning opportunity if teacher helps them to find it. If he/she doesn’t they miss the opportunity to learn, and may even learn something wrong! By checking their homework teachers can: a) See the pupils progress; b) Work with the pupils individually; c) Stimulate their pupils to make displays, competitions, etc; d) Work with the pupils’ parents When and how to check homework? a) While pupils are doing classwork activities, the teacher can go round quickly look at their homework. b) The teacher can assess homework during the Let’s Play lesson while pupils are doing a longer activity. c) There are 2 English lessons a week in a Year1 and they are usually taught every second or third day of the week so the teacher can ask the pupils to leave their books in the classroom to assess. The next day, after assessing their homework, he/she can give them their books back. 50

2.3. Useful activities in teaching mixed age groups Teaching a group of mixed age students can be challenging. But there are many ways that you can work with this situation and have a fun and successful time for all of the students involved. Here are some to get you started. Let parents know what the goals for the class are and what assistance you will need for them. With mixed age classes, students may be working with different materials, such as texts or handouts, etc. if that’s the case, you as the teacher won’t have as much time to spend helping students as you normally would, so you’ll need the parents to help out. Be specific in letting them know what you would like them to do outside of class time. If the lesson are created around activities that appeal more towards the younger learners, there is a good chance the older learners will start to tune out, even if they are helping out a lot. If you plan your lessons whit the older students in mind, some of the activities will be too difficult for t5he others, but the younger children generally look up to their older friends, siblings. They watch what they do and try to emulate them. This also gives the older learners a chance to help the younger learners, and that’s a great opportunity for the older learners to reinforce what they are learning. When you do activities more appropriate for the younger learners, have the older kids act as the teacher or as a teacher’s helpers. This will give them the chance to practice their skills another way. Both picture books and songs are great for reaching kids of variety of ages. Because of the illustrations, all the students should be able to follow along with a picture book. The great thing about book is that they speak to each of us in different ways depending on where we are in our lives. And as you read, you can interact with each of the students by asking them questions that are appropriate for their level. If you have students who are readers, have them help to read. 51

By using songs that are simply enough for very young, emerging speakers, but fun enough for older learners of all levels, all of the students can join in. we have many songs to choose from. There may be times when you are doing activity that the older learners “get” or can do but the younger learners can’t. it may be disappointing that everyone couldn’t participate as you would have liked, but it’s really powerful for the younger learners to see their older friends/siblings doing something they can’t yet do. It gives them someone to look up to, and something to aspire to. Your 7- year olds are probably writing and reading more than your 3 and 4 year olds. Let the younger kids see that. Think of ways you can make simple vocabulary building activities for the younger learners into reading activities for the older leaners. For example, if you use flashcards to introduce or review vocabulary in class, make them so that they have both the picture and the word on the card. When you attempt to elicit the word from an older learner, just reveal the word part of the card first. When you use the same card with younger learner you may show the picture part of the card first (just as an example…maybe your 3 year- old reads better than the older kids) play games like Concentration in teams with one older kid and one younger kid paired together. Have the students match picture cards to word cards. We designed super simple ABCs series for use mixed age or mixed level groups. Use the lower case book for the older students and the upper case book for the younger ones. You’ll be able to do the same activities, sing the same songs, introduce the same vocabulary, and have everyone work in their books at the same time. This means you can work at the same pace, but the older learners will have a book at their level and the younger ones will have a book just right for them. Adding a craft to your lesson, even if it’s just once every few classes, can really help. Make something simple, such as a Mother’s Day card with construction paper, and grade it up for the older learners by having them write message on it. Everyone gets to learn by following your directions, and the older 52

learners can help the younger ones. Even if you keep the craft very, very simple each student will be able to make something that suits their level of maturity. Using flashcards is one of the best ways of teaching the language. There are following interesting activities in teaching mixed age groups such as: “Mystery box”, “Eraser races”,” Pass the card”, “Roll the dice”, “Guess the picture”, “Jumping cards”. When introducing vocabulary to young learners, it’s great to use real items that capture children’s attention. However, it’s not always possible or realistic for teachers to use real items in the classroom. Flashcards can be a nice way to introduce new vocabulary so that learners have a very clear understanding. When using flashcards or picture cards to introduce vocabulary in the classroom, try to create some suspense or mystery about the cards. Students are more receptive to learning when they are curious. Rather than just flipping through the cards into activities. This will help students be more invested and more likely to remember the words. Reinforce the vocabulary words in other parts of your lesson, such as in a story time book, a worksheet or a song. Have the students help you create meaningful gestures for the words that you can use while singing together. One of the simplest ways to engage students’ interest is to introduce new items with a Mystery Box. You can give hints about what’s inside and have students guess. Go through the picture cards that you are planning to introduce in class. Identify the cards you think students are most likely to be familiar with. Place two of these cards on the floor at the front of the classroom. Divide the class into two teams and have them line up. Give the two students at the front of the lines on eraser each. When the teacher calls out one of the cards, the two students race to put their eraser on the correct card. The first student to do so wins a point for his team. Repeat several times, and add a third card. Play with the three cards for several turns, and then add a fourth card, a fifth card, and then a six card and so on. 53

When you begin with cards the students are a little familiar with, it allows you to slowly introduce some of the more challenging vocabulary. If you are introducing vocabulary that no students in the class know, give hints with your voice. For example, if you have a ghost card and a ballerina card, say “ghost” in a spooky voice, so the students will have an idea of which card it is. The students and the teacher sit in a circle. The teacher starts by passing a picture card to the student on his left, saying, “This is a horse.” The student takes the card and passes it to the next student, saying, “This is a horse.” The card is passed around the circle. When the card returns to the teacher, the teacher puts the card aside and introduces a new picture card in the same manner. When the students have learned a few picture cards, the teacher has several options: a) wait until a card has reached the half way mark, then introduce a second card going in the same direction; b) introduce cards at the same time going in opposite directions; or c) send 3-4 cards around the circle in the same direction with little pause between each. Tip: four cards is probably the maximum number of cards to work with at one time. Choose six picture cards you would like to introduce and place them on the whiteboard with magnets. Give each card a number of from 1-6, writing the numbers above the cards with your whiteboard marker. Divide the class into two teams. Give one student, any student, a big dice to roll. The whole class watches to see what number comes up. The first student to say the name of the vocabulary card with the same number as the dice wins a point for her team. If nobody knows the vocabulary card, introduce it and have the students repeat it. They’ll try hard to remember so they can answer it correctly the next time. Play until one team reaches a set amount of points. If it becomes easy, begin replacing the cards on the board with new cards. Take two sheets of paper the same size as the picture cards. Cut several small holes randomly spaced in one sheet. In the second sheet, cut larger holes in the same spots, so that the holes from both sheets paper line up. Cover a flash card 54

with the large-holed sheet, and the place the small-holed sheet on top of that. When you look at the picture, you will only able to see small parts where the holes are. Can you guess what the picture is? No? Slowly remove the large-holed sheet, revealing the picture bit-by-bit. Choose 8-10 picture cards and hang them in arrow on the board. Have students hand. Everyone stamps their feet left, right, left, right, left, right in a comfortable beat. Start chanting the names of the card. After two or three rounds, turn one card over. Repeat the chant, but when you reach the card that has been turned over, everybody jumps. Turn over another card and start the chant again. You will jump two times now. Continue turning over cards until all but one of the cards have been turned over. Increase the pace or the number of cards if the students want a bigger challenge! Some songs have more of a story to them and can be difficult to teach by gesture alone. For these, you can teach the song with visual aids. For example, classic rhymes/stories like “Five Little Monkeys,” “Teen in the Bed,” “The Wheels On The Bus,” or “Old McDonald” all have many picture book versions available. Read the storybook first so that students understand what is happening when you sing the song. As you read the storybook, you can sing some of the words to introduce the melody of the song. After reading the book, try doing a simple craft or coloring page related to the book as you play the song in the background. Then sing the song and have the students follow along with the gestures. Remember that with very young learners (4years and younger), they enjoy the familiarity of hearing a song over and over. You can use their favorites almost every week. If you are using a song frequently, understand that there is no need for them to sing right away…let them become comfortable with it and sing when they are ready. As the kids grow older, you don’t want to repeat songs as much. Students will still have their favorites that they like to sing, but you won’t be repeating songs every week like you do with the younger learners. In this case you’ll need to 55

build more exposure to the song into one or two lessons, and then go back to it every once in a while for review. 2.4. Types of learning difficulties in children The Merch Online Medical Library defines a learning disorder as a condition that prevents a person from being able to “acquire, retain or broadly use specific skills and information” due to deficiencies in certain areas that affects academic performance. Learning disorders are not indicators of intelligence and differ from learning problems caused by disease or psychological, sociological concerns. Most types of childhood learning difficulties fall into three general areas: mathematics disorders, reading disorders and disorders of written expression. Mathematic learning disorders are grouped under the common term dyscalculia. These disorders can affect child’s ability to understand time, count money and perform mathematical calculations. In younger children signs of dyscalculia may include difficulty recognizing printed numbers, difficulty relating numbers to physical objects by common denominators, including the size or color. Older children may have difficulties learning math facts, remembering math processes, estimating totals or developing strategies for solving problems. Although no one knows exactly what causes dyscalculia, The National Center for Learning disabilities indicates with dyscalculia often have difficulties processing what they see visually and also may have problems processing what they hear. Although generally referred to as a reading disorder, dyslexia is a learning disability that can have a wide ranging effect on a child’s ability to communicate effectively. The most common symptoms of dyslexia are difficulties with reading writing and spelling. Less recognized symptoms, however, can include difficulties with understanding abstract or non-literal language, such as jokes or idioms, and difficulties with verbal expression due to inability to easily access the vocabulary needed to fully verbalize a thought. Children with dyslexia may also appear to have problems following directions due to difficulties understanding verbal 56

instructions. According to Nemours, a nonprofit children’s health care organization, dyslexia affects between 15percent to 20percent of the American population. Dysgraphia is a learning disorder that specifically affects a child’s ability to effectively communicate via the written word. Dysgraphia is actually processing disorder in which a child may have difficulties managing the motor skills needed to physically write. Symptoms of dysgraphia can include illegible handwriting, a noticeable awkward pencil grip and body position, an inability to write between lines, mixing capital and lower case letters in words inappropriately, omitting words when writing and becoming quickly tired out when writing. A child with dysgraphia will generally avoid writing or drawing whenever possible and may show a large difference between how well he verbally communicates an idea and how he can communicate the same idea in written form. Many parents are eager to help their kids learn English from a young age. One of the most important factors in teaching foreign languages to young children is helping them form positive perceptions of communicating with foreign languages. A great advantage of early childhood second language exposure is that helps children form a positive impression of foreign languages. When children are exposed to a foreign language from a very young age, they tend to view the language positively and learning another language becomes something they are very comfortable with. However, if you force a young child to speak a second language even when they are resisting, you run the risk of creating a negative impression of that language. Some parents think a great way to help their children learn another language is to use only that language at home. It’s commendable idea, but it’s not unusual for children to grow frustrated and want their parent to speak to them in their native tongue. The last thing you want is for your child to develop negative feelings towards foreign languages, or to have any difficulty communicating with Mom and Dad. Nothing is more important than you having good communication 57

with your children. If your children are expressing frustration when you try to communicate in English, it may be best to ease up and use your native language. You want your children 100% comfortable communicating with you. One of the best ways to get children interested in doing something is to let them observe you enjoying that activity. Don’t make a big deal out of it, but let your children see you reading English books or newspapers. Watch English DVDs, listen to English music or let them see you speaking English with a friend. Your children look up to you. When they are playing, they pretend to be you. if you’d like them to be interested in English. If a child is forced to respond in a secondary language they find difficult, they can become frustrated and disappointed easily. You can use a lot of English with your children that doesn’t pressure them to speak. Use simple commands, such as “Put on your shoes.” “Let’s go.” Or “Give me the apple, please.” Give praise, like “Good job!” “Well done!” or “What a beautiful drawing!” Make observations or point things out, “It’s cold today!” “Look at the brown dog.” or “This ice cream is yummy.” Ask basic questions that can be answered through gesture or short answers, such as “Which shirt do you want to wear?” – while holding up two shorts to choose from, “Do you like spaghetti?” or “Where are your shoes?” These are all great ways to communicate naturally with them in English without forcing them to speak. Remember that input is essential. Identify some English media (such as DVDs and CDs) that your children like and let them enjoy it on their own terms without pressuring them to produce English right away. Sometimes we have unrealistic expectations for young foreign language learners. Just as a young native English speaker needs time to start producing English, so does a young foreign language learner. Almost all language learners go through a “silent period” before 58

they begin producing language on their own. Naturally, the silent period for a child can often quite be long. Provide as much enjoyable input as you can, and let them start producing English at their own pace. Read to your children in English as well. Find some good English picture books that your children enjoy looking at with you and read to them at story time. Just be careful not to completely replace books in your native language with English books. For developing literacy, it’s extremely important that you read to your child in their native language. Learning a second language should be a positive experience. Remember that this is not a race. If you are exposing your children to English regularly in fun ways, they will be fine as they progress in their language learning. If you push too hard, they will start to resist. Focus on the positives. Praise your children for their English, but don’t go overboard and make them feel like speaking English is extraordinary. You want your children to feel positive about English without making them feel like English is a big scary subject beyond their reach. 59

Conclusion The present qualification work deals with the problem of teaching English as a second language to small children. Having investigated the problem both theoretical and practically we came to the following conclusion. The theme of the work is very actual, since it is aimed at studying effective ways of teaching English to small kids. Teaching English at the most elementary level has become an issue of governmental importance at present. On December 10.2012 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan I.A.Karimov signed a Decree “About the measures on further development of foreign language teaching and learning system”. According to the Decree, starting from 2013-2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually is being taught in our country from the first year of schooling in the form of lesson-games and speaking games, continuing to learning the alphabet, reading and spelling in the second grade. The text-book Kids’ English Class1 has been created by the initiative of the Resolution №1875 of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and in line with the requirements of the CEFR. Special attention has been paid by us at this manual as it is the first book in a series of English books primary classes. The book has been designed to develop speaking and listening skills without reading and writing. Studies have shown that it is important to start teaching English as a second language early because young children have an easier time learning language then adolescents or adults. Children are incredibly adapted to learning languages, and pick up new words, phrases and grammar structures easily. But teachers must take into consideration the fact that kids have a lot of energy and a shorter attention span than adults. However educators can use the kids’ energy to their advantage and engage them with games, songs and activities that will help them learn while having fun. 60

Creating productive learning environment by exposing kids to English through classroom conversation, age appropriate DVDs and videos is the first important step in teaching the second language. Using music and songs is also important while teaching small kids. It is an effective way to teach number the alphabet, body parts and other words requiring memorization. Using motions and gestures during the lesson to reinforce leaning is a productive activity as well. English teachers must use Pictionary, charades, hangman, and matching games to teach grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses “Kids’ English” is also based on above mentioned classroom activities. General principles of the book are 1) immersion, 2) listening precedes speaking, 3) learning through actions 4) constructing reality. Learning centred class is emphasized in the book. In the learner-centred classroom, where pupils are being encouraged to use English in real communication fluency is just as important as accuracy. Kids’ English contains many activities, exercises and games, which encourage pupils to use the new language naturally through working in pairs or in small groups. Experiments which were made by scientists and educators have proved that: Children learn best when the activity has an elementary of surprise. Children learn best when the activity is tangible and active. Children learn best when an activity has a beginning, middle and an end. Children learn best when the activity is relevant to their own lives. Children learn best when the facilitator provides open-ended question. Children learn best when the facilitator understands that there needs to be the freedom to change the activity in the middle whenever its appropriate. Children learn best when the facilitator understands the audience, and makes adjustments when needed. 61
