Since the early days of Uzbekistan’s independence, care about the harmonic development of the younger generation, its physical moral and spiritual upbringing has become one of the most important priorities of state

policy. In 1997, upon the immediate leadership of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islom Karimov, The national program for Cadre Training was developed. Thanks to its implementation, the country has been maintain the permanent deepening and renewal of the general educational and professional training through ю the organic unity combined with historical and spiritual heritage of the people Reforms in the systems of education in Uzbekistan and the large- scale programs which are aimed at the happy future of our children, are now rendering their true results. On December 10, 2012 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”. It is noted that in the framework of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Programme for Training in the country, a comprehensive foreign languages’ teaching system, aimed at creating harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern-thinking young generation, further integration of the country to the world community, has been created. During the years of independence, over 51.7 thousand teachers of foreign languages graduated from universities, English, German and French multimedia tutorials and textbooks for 5-9 grades of secondary schools, electronic resources for learning English in primary schools were created, more than 5000 secondary schools, professional colleges and academic lyceums were equipped with language laboratories. However, analysis of the current system of organizing language learning shows that learning standards, curricula and textbooks do not fully meet the current requirements, particularly in the use of advanced in formation and media technologies. Education in mainly conducted in traditional methods. Further development of a continuum of foreign languages learning at all levels of education; improving skills of teachers and provision of modern teaching materials are required. According to the decree, starting from 2013/2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country will be taught from the first of

schooling in the form of lesson-games and speaking games, continuing to learning the alphabet, reading and spelling in the second year (grade). Also it is envisaged that university modules, especially in technical and international areas, will be offered in English and other foreign languages at higher education institutions. Actuality of the theme . Recent years have seen a massive increase in English language teaching in Uzbekistan, not only in schools but also in factories and elsewhere. The knowledge of English is required by many employers and in many other parts of people’s life. It will be important to understand English very well in the future and this is the reason for finding better and more enjoyable ways how to start teaching young learners. Young learners from an early age should learn about foreign cultures so that they grow up tolerant and sympathetic towards others. The earlier a man starts the more he gets. As a result of this, English teaching has started to be increasingly important. I decided to write about the use of activities in language teaching at a basic school. Most language teachers concentrate on vocabulary, grammar, sometimes on pronunciation which is covered in textbooks, but there are more pleasant, practical and useful ways to introduce and practice all these common requirements. Every learners love interesting games activities and learning through pleasure is the way to reach the goals. This theme is not properly studied by world linguistic scientists and implementation of this kind of activities is useful for all young learners even in our country. Investigation of the problem. This problem was investigated by many scientists Wendy .K, Ytre berg.B, S. Philips ,Scott. M are among them. The aim of the qualification paper. This final qualification work deals with young and teenage learners. Particularly, it analyses their attitudes towards English language learning through activites. The transition from the lower to the upper-primary school grades usually marks a breaking

point when the adolescence begins and the learners’ attitudes change. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the target group of teenagers and investigates how their attitudes and interest in learning English change. This final qualification work focuses teenagers from 15 to 16 years old learners and their attitudes to learning English through the activities. In particular, it aims to investigate the changes in the interest in learning English, when young learners enter upper-primary grades. Teachers can start with controlled activities and make them freer when children develop the ability to take responsibility and work without constant supervision. Scientific novelty and practical value. Generally, there has been a growing interest in the teaching of young learners. However, teenagers make a large proportion of all learners of English as well. It is the age of students that represents a major factor in teachers’ decisions about what and how to teach. Therefore, it is obvious that successful learning happens when teachers are able to address the needs of a particular age group. One of the most common beliefs is that teaching teenagers is a difficult task. Many English teachers would probably agree that it is hard to establish a good learning atmosphere in a teenage classroom. It is also widely agreed that teenagers are less motivated than other groups of learners. Construction of the qualification paper. Chapter I General views on language activities This chapter aimed at learning teachers how to begin teaching language, how to improve language skills and how teach language activities. Young learners are teenagers from the first year of formal schooling to fifteen or sixteen years of age. They are relatively mature learners with both adult and

childish features. I would like to concentrate on young learners of from eight and nine till fifteen and sixteen years of age. These learners have attended the third year of a special language programme. They can write and read in their first language but they do not have enough knowledge about grammar and grammatical categories. They are not competent to work with language as a tool although they can use it in everyday life. They are able to listen to a text and say what it is about. They still like playing games, singing songs, saying rhymes and introducing their own thoughts and ideas. The following list shows general characteristics and language development of a young learner according to Wendy and Ytreberg · They can tell the difference between fact and fiction. · Their basic concepts are formed. They have very decided views of the world. · They ask questions all the time. · They rely on the spoken word as well as the physical world to convey and understand meaning. They are able to make some decisions about their own learning. · They have definite views about what they like and do not like doing. · They have a developed sense of fairness about what happens in the classroom and begin to question the teacher’s decisions. · They are able to work with others and learn from others. Language development: · They understand abstracts · They understand symbols (beginning with words) · They generalize and systematize Young learners learning languages We can learn a lot from how little babies acquire their first language. As Brumfit, Moon and Tongue claim: “An intriguing paradox in the development of young

children is their ability to establish their first language at a time when they are unable to understand anything about the system which they come to use with such competence. From experiences of learning other languages at later ages there is much that indicates that learning a language is not easy. Yet young learners the world over persist and make progress even though it later appears to be difficult. The fact that young learners learn their first language such speed and competence must mean that if the process can be better understood, it should be possible to design methods through which children learn a second language in much the same way as they learn their first language”. Babies learn through voice, gestures, speaker’s face and tone of the voice and they perceive an atmosphere around them. Then they observe the world they live in and try to give things some titles. At first children operate with concrete words and later then they develop their abstract thinking and try to use abstract words in their speech. The more concrete the words are the more children learn. They need many real things, pictures and associations to create a second language. According to my experience they learn very quickly when they can play with real things or are able to imagine situations or actions. The best way is observing new language through real actions which are motivating for them in a right way. They do not like being taught in a directive way they enjoy active involvement. How can young learners be helped to learn a foreign language? In “Teaching English to young learners” Brumfit, Moon and Tongue say: “It is not surprising to note that a young learner’s concentration span increases as he/she grows older. Young learners cannot concentrate on one thing for a long period and therefore the authors recommend that lessons should be divided into a series of activities lasting no longer than five or ten minutes. This is because young learners are bombarded with

new experiences and information. Teachers should introduce a reasonable number of new language items and present and practise them in a number of different ways. I definitely agree with this theory. Young learners who are tired after their school work are not able to concentrate on my after-school language course very much and I must plan my lessons carefully and then be creative during them and change prepared ones according to the pupils ґ mood. A teacher should recognize that an activity is not good in a very short time and must be prepared to change it. 1.1. Language Learning Activity types The activity types for languages presented below aim to provide a systematic, pedagogically meaningful scaffold that guides teachers’ instructional thinking,

decision-making, and technology integration while promoting the development of students’ communicative competence. These activities draw from the British Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for Foreign Language Learning, which state that communication in the target language is understood as a process that involves three modes: (a) Interpersonal, (b) interpretive, and (c) presentational. The interpersonal mode involves two-way written or oral communication with active negotiation of meaning. Because of this feature, speaking, listening, reading, and writing can be involved. The interpretive mode focuses on the appropriate interpretation of meanings (e.g., listening to a broadcast, reading a text, or viewing a movie). Because the author of the news, text, or movie is absent, there are no opportunities for active negotiation of meaning. This mode involves listening, reading, and viewing abilities. The presentational mode is a one-way communication mode therefore, no opportunities for negotiation of meaning between presenters and audience are provided. This mode involves speaking and writing abilities. Because these communication modes require students to work on different skills as they develop their communicative competence, we have conceptualized and organized these activities into five genres that address different abilities: (a) listening, (b) speaking, (c) reading, (d) writing, and (e) viewing. In each of the genre tables, learning activity types are listed along with descriptions. A third column in each table is comprised of possible technologies to use that are keyed to each of the activity types. The software titles and specific Web sites included are meant to be illustrative. The taxonomy authors do not necessarily endorse any of these technologies. These activities—used in combination or alone—are designed to promote communication in the target language (L2) as well as to provide opportunities to explore the connections between the target language and its underlying culture(s).

Listening Activity Types Listening skills may seem more passive or less demanding than other language skills. However, when students are engaged in listening activities, they employ different competencies. For instance, when trying to comprehend and interpret a message, they need to know morphology, syntax, vocabulary (grammatical competence), the social and cultural expectations of native speakers in the language studied (sociolinguistic competence), how to use pronouns and conjunctions in a cohesive and coherent manner (discursive competence), and how to make educated guesses to compensate for gaps in their knowledge (strategic competence). After all, what is the purpose of learning a language if you cannot speak it? The activity types proposed below are appropriate for students with different levels of language proficiency within the continuum described in the ACTFL Guidelines .

Writing in L2 focuses on both the process and the product. When working with writing skills, students can engage in all three modes of communication— interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. In addition, writing abilities involve the same four competencies mentioned above (grammatical, sociolinguistic, discursive, and strategic) that enable learners to convey meanings with accuracy across cultures. The activities proposed below address both expository and creative writing skills. Read a diary/journal Students read entries from peers’ diaries/journals posted online. Web, blog Viewing Activity Types Viewing abilities are critical for “zooming into” the target language culture. Through viewing activities, students can observe authentic interactions among native speakers; learn about differences among dialects, accents, registers, and body language without leaving the boundaries of their classroom. As with reading and listening, students learning an L2 bring into play the same four competencies to comprehend and interpret a message. The viewing activity types below vary in the degree of challenge offered to students in terms of comprehension and interpretation of meanings. Activities help learners learn language more effectively. They make learners interest language. According to these activities are devided into groups, e.g activities for children, activities for teenagers and activities for adults. I pay attention to children and teenagers. Because if learners know language from childhood they learn language well in the next steps. Language activities for children The first few years of a child’s life are key to the development of speech, language and cognitive skills. For this reason it is important to create activities and strategies to help develop speech and language skills that give them all the stimulation, positive role modeling and human contact that they need. For a normally developing child learning is easy and creating opportunities for learning is also not difficult. Through play and simple daily interactions and experiences we can help the child acquire new language and skills. Adults do not need special training to be able to provide their child with a positive start in life. There are a few simple building blocks to help your child grow, and parents just need to provide the time to interact with their children. By playing and allowing your child time and space to explore and interact in their own way you allow your child to develop and learn in a fun and safe environment. Speech and language skills do not just evolve on their own. They are part of a bigger picture involving social interaction, play, observation, manipulating objects, listening and attending. All these things are working together and often, without one, it is difficult to develop another. Below, we have listed a few simple ideas that are fun and easy to do at home, remember, always praise your child for making any attempts at communication. How children learn speech and how to encourage speech

Good modeling An important aspect of learning speech is listening. A child learns new sounds and words by listening to those around him. This is why it is important to provide good speech for the child to listen to. Say words clearly and slowly and use plenty of intonation. If your child attempts a word and it is not pronounced correctly, praise him for trying. Do not try and get your child to repeat the word or correct it. Repeat the word back yourself to show you have understood and to give your child a good version of the word. One other important thing – TAKE THE DUMMY OR PACIFIER OUT!!!. Motivating sound games Sometimes, using games can motivate your child to make sounds. For instance play the game – ready… steady…. GO!! Blow up a balloon, hold it, then say “ready….steady….GO”, and let the balloon go. Do this a few times and then pause after you say “ready…steady….” and see if your child steps in and says “GO”. Listening, attention and observation Listening and attention skills are the building blocks of speech and language development. The acquisition of these skills is vital in the early years if you want your child to be successful at school. The development of these skills is facilitated by interaction with others, with having a shared focus with others, and playing in an environment that is free of distractions. Listening is not the same as hearing. A child can have perfect hearing, but be a very poor listener. Children with Autism, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder or Auditory Processing Disorders will have difficulties with listening, remembering, and following verbal instructions. Children that have had a lack of social interaction or poor role modeling in the early years of their lives may present with listening and attention difficulties. Studies are also showing that over exposure to television from a young age can have detrimental long term effects on listening and attention skills.

Some children find these skills more difficult to master than others. There are lots of ways to enhance your children’s listening and attention skills, not least by turning off the television and spending some quality time with them. Try to find activities that share your attention that you can both enjoy and focus on together. Also, don’t forget to praise good listening and good looking. Observation skills These skills require the child to stop and focus on a particular task. Having a shared focus helps this process. The activities mentioned below require your child to focus on a task for a few minutes and really use their observation skills. These tasks would preferably be done at a table-top as a shared focus activity. The type of task will depend on the age of your child. If you think your child has a speech delay or disorder, see our Milestones sections on the left hand side menu. If you continue to be concerned about your child’s speech and language development visit your local speech and language therapist / pathologist. Language – how to develop language skills Remember your language level One of the biggest things to be aware of when using language around your young child is the level of language you use. Remember, with young children, just use key words, and if you use a small sentence emphasize the important word. Talk slowly and point to what you are talking about. If you are talking about something that is not in sight, it is likely the young child will not know what you are referring to. Watching, waiting and listening You can enhance your child’s development of language by sometimes taking a step back during play and letting them take the lead. This gives the child control of their environment and builds their confidence. Although you are still involved in the play

you are not dictating what is happening. However, you can still be feeding language into the play as it is happening. So the takeaway here is not to feel you have to fill in any gaps of silence, just watch and listen and add language. Add language Adding language is an easy thing to do and can be done in all types of different situations, not just play. You comment on what the child sees, commentate on what your child is doing, or expand on what they have said e.g. Child: “car” Adult: “fast car” or “red car” The environment The environment in which your child learns also has an impact on how they learn. Try and reduce distractions and background noise – TURN OFF THE TV!! A busy household with lots of children will be noisy, but has benefits because the young child will be getting to play with others which is itself will be beneficial. However, sometimes you cannot beat some adult input and if you get half an hour to have some one-to-one quality time with your young child then make the most of it. Role play Dressing up is great fun and playing different roles will expand your child’s imagination. In fact you do not even have to dress up to do role play. Games involving different characters will allow you to introduce lots of new related language and stretch your child’s creative play skills. For instance, if you pretended to be firemen putting out a fire, think how many related words you could use” fire, fireman, fire engine, ladder, water, hose, burning, building, driving, climbing, up, down, smoke,

hat, boots, jackets, save, squirt, bucket, fire out, hero, etc. Role play is great for expanding your child’s imagination and introducing new vocabulary. Most types of interaction through play will have a positive effect on speech and language acquisition. The child’s social skills will also benefit because they will be using eye contact, turn-taking and listening skills. By letting your child take the lead in a game, they will gain confidence in communicating and feel that they are in control, so be relaxed in the communication environment. Depending on your child’s language competence you may want to set a goal for each game, although it is important not to make it too structured because we want the game to be led by the child. Any goal should be simple and flexible. Language needs to be fed into the game, rather than trying to encourage the child to say particular words. This means we don’t want to be continually saying to the child “what is he doing?” or “what are you doing?” or “say running, say running”. Children do not learn language this way, children learn language by hearing it first and making associations between the word and the action. As adults we want to just feed the language in at the appropriate times. Example of a language role play game: Bus Driver game: Let your child be a bus driver and you can be the passenger. Set up some chairs for a bus and act the roles. As an example, just look at all the verbs you might use in this game: Steer the bus, Press the horn, Ring the bell, Sit down, Pay the driver, Drive the bus, Find the change, Walk down the aisle. If your child finds a game complicated, you could be the bus driver first and model it for your child, then your child can take a turn and you add language to the situation. Creating a good atmosphere Classroom is a place where learners should feel confident, satisfied and happy although they should learn something new there. As teachers we should have respect

towards our pupils and like them all. This is a very important part of a teacher’s characteristic. Young learners have a very sharp sense of fairness and they often realize inequity earlier than a teacher as Scott and Ytreberg claim. Another important thing is to create pleasant and familiar surroundings. The classroom should be decorated not only by the teacher’s tools and pictures but also by the pupils ґ works, projects and physical object which can make it a nice place to learn. My pupils have a big advantage of having the classroom only for their lessons. We can create our own environment with all kinds of personal things. I often change desks lay-out in the classroom to make it more interesting and suitable for different activities. My pupils like being divided to groups or pairs. They often surprise me by their responsibility to do activities in their own way and do them well. A secure class atmosphere is very important for forming good lessons. Here are some of the recommendations which help to create a safe class atmosphere according to Scott and Ytreberg, · Pupils need to know what we are doing and what is happening in the classroom. · Respect your pupils. · Whenever a pupil is trying to tell you something, accept whatever he or she says - mistakes as well. Constant, direct correction is not effective and it does not help to create a good class atmosphere. Correction has its place when you are working on guided language exercises. · Learners of all ages are sometimes unkind to each other. They should not laugh at others ґ mistakes, and this has to be one of the rules of the classroom. Pupils have to be told that everyone makes mistakes when they are learning a new language, and that it is all right. · Establish routines.

· Give the learners the responsibility for doing practical jobs in the classroom. · Avoid organized competition. Language learning is a situation where everyone can win. Learners compete naturally with each other - to see whose finished first etc., but this is something different. · Avoid giving physical rewards or prizes. It tells others that they have not "won" and it does not help learning to take place. · Do not give learners English names. Language is a personal thing, and you are the same person no matter what language you are using. The teacher’s role People have in general many different roles. Everybody plays a part in society. According to my own experience the personality of a teacher and his/her approach is very important. A teacher’s role is very significant and should be in a high level. A teacher is often the first person who gives children new information about a foreign language. According to many practical methodological books a teacher can change various roles, because individual stages of the lesson require different approaches to learners. Sometimes only the teacher’s personality can decide if the children’s attitude towards learning foreign languages is positive or negative. The learner’s role The young learner is very significant and all work should be aimed towards him. "Younger learners respond to language according to what it does or what they can do with it, rather than treating it as an intellectual game in abstract system. This has both advantages and disadvantages: on the one hand they respond to the meaning underlying the language used and do not worry about individual words or sentences, on the other hand, they do not make the analytical links that older learners do. Younger learners have the advantage of being great mimics, are often unselfconscious, and are usually prepared to enjoy the activities the teacher has

prepared for them". Language activities for teenagers Theoretical views on language activities for teenagers . There are (roughly speaking) four types of low-proficiency student: 1 Some are weak in English because they may have been learning for a shorter time than their classmates; or perhaps they have come from another school where they received insufficient opportunity to progress or did not get enough encouragement. The great majority of students in this group need lots of attention, but they have a good chance of catching up if they get adequate attention. 2 A second group is made up of students with physiological learning disabilities such as poor hearing. 3 A third group – fortunately not represented in all classes – is made up of children with severe psychological problems resulting, for instance, from traumatic experiences of one kind or another. 4 It is a fourth sort of low-proficiency student that most commonly disrupts the work of their classmates and gives teachers headaches. These are students who are weak in English largely because their motivation is low. They attach little importance to all the reasons for learning that we teachers and their better motivated classmates can see: reasons such as gaining knowledge for qualifications and career, experiencing the fascination of discovery, and making one’s parents and teachers happy. These poorly motivated students are rarely persuadable by such arguments as This will all be very useful to you one day . With such learners it is exceptionally important that your lessons be not just useful (since denial of usefulness may be part of their basic attitude) and well-managed (since this too may be unappreciated) but also interesting and varied. So, what is it, in general, that can make a lesson interesting for 1 1 – 1 6 - year olds, even ones with low motivation? Let us look at ten features of interesting lessons, points (a) to (j) below, and then consider an example activity, ‘Flash the picture’.

a. First, variety is important. A lesson of, say, 50 minutes, should consist of at least three – perhaps four to six – distinct components. In some lessons, these components may be the different stages of a single overall activity which is long but varied. In others, they may belong to two or more separate activities. b. Activities, and the steps that make them up, should have clearly understood and achievable goals. Ideally, there should also be a tangible or at least observable outcome: a student text, for example, or a performance. c. Activities with game-like elements are usually very good for generating interest. Such elements include:  a degree of competition  a goal which is about something other than getting the language right. One example of this kind of goal is identifying as many differences between two pictures as possible within a short time limit; another is solving a brainteaser. d. A major means of maintaining interest is use of activities which require and encourage students to use the target language for communication of interesting messages. e. Extensive use of non-language stimuli such as pictures, objects, mime, music and sound effects is crucial if your class includes poorly motivated students. f. Almost anything you can do to make classwork personally relevant will help. If, for instance, you want students to speak about an object, let it be one that is special to them for some reason – an object, perhaps, that has sentimental value or one they use in connection with a pastime they enjoy. g. It is always wise to try to discover what topics are of current interest to the age group you are teaching and try to include them, somehow, in your lessons.

h. Periodic opportunity to move about, or at least stand and move, is highly beneficial to students in this age range and can contribute to keeping interest up. i. Humor is important too. Of course, there is no recipe for this. But, if you create the right sort of atmosphere and show your sense of humour as often as you can, more humor will come from your students. j. Finally, occasional surprises can help keep students interested and paying attention. Few activities will include all of these features, but let us look at one that includes several: Flash the picture Age Any Time 5 minutes Level Any (see Variation for beginners, below) Focus Nouns and prepositions especially, but other elements of language too, depending on the picture Material A large picture on stiff paper or a copy on OHP transparency Preparation Choose a picture large enough for everyone to see or copy one onto an OHP transparency. This activity works best with scenes (especially ones that suggest a scenario) which include just a few visually salient people (or things) plus various less salient details. Procedure 1 Flash or show the picture for a very short time – a second or less. 2 Ask students to say what they saw. 3 Repeat Steps 1 and 2 . 4 Show the picture for three or four seconds.

5 Repeat Step 2 . 6 Display the picture and keep it in full view. Elicit or teach useful vocabulary and elicit as much comment as you can, for example:  Facts about what is shown, e.g. If there is a tool, what is it for?  speculations about what has just happened or what is going to happen  speculations about people’s motives for what they are doing  interpretations: if the scene is somewhat mysterious or ambiguous  solutions: if the scene shows people in a problem situation  opinions: if the scene suggests a controversy  personal associations, e.g. ask, Does the picture remind you of anything? , Has anyone here ever been in a situation like this ? Among the features that make ‘Flash the picture’ a potentially interesting activity are: a. The use of a picture can provide a welcome break from focusing directly on words and texts. b. The activity has a clear purpose: to revise or teach the vocabulary and grammar needed to talk about a particular picture. c. The fact that the picture is only flashed (in the beginning) means that anyone who pays close attention has a good chance of noticing something that others will fail to see. Thus, a mood of game-like competition readily develops but, because the activity is brief, it is unlikely to get out of hand. d. Because different students will notice or think different things about the picture, communication is encouraged. In other words, ‘Flash the picture’ is communicative because there is an ‘information gap’ or an ‘opinion gap’. e, f, g You can choose pictures that relate to topics of current interest to your students. j. Students may not expect a picture to be used in this way. They may

also be surprised by how much they notice during one brief flash. In addition to choosing activities with potential to be interesting and useful, there are a few additional things one can do in order to help low-level, poorly motivated students to learn:  Try to use the truth rule regularly in small ways. This helps poorly motivated learners to recognize that English can be useful for saying real things here and now.  Everyone knows that nothing builds motivation like success, so make your lessons success-oriented . Design or choose tasks which set everyone achievable aims. In mixed-proficiency classes, flexible activities have a role to play here. One tactic in particular that may get poorly motivated students to perform better is to set very low minimums but then also include an apparently minor requirement which encourages them to exceed the minimum. For example, asking poorly motivated learners to talk in pairs about what they did at the weekend may not work as well as asking one partner to say two very short true sentences about their weekend. Their partner should then say Because . . . ? at least twice. And the first speaker then has to provide the reasons. A variation is to set an intriguing frame of some kind that looks small and easy to add something into – either a little or a lot, depending on how much a student can or wants to say. This is often equivalent to designing a core task which is easy for everyone in the class to do, including the weaker students, plus a challenging extra for students who are more proficient. example: Write in the shape Age 11 and up Level Elementary–Advanced Time 2 5 – 4 5 minutes Focus Writing, speaking Material Blank sheets of A paper

Procedure 1 Hand out the sheets of A 4 paper and ask students to draw on it the outline (only the outline!) of an object that is important to them – maybe a gift or souvenir; maybe something they use a lot. Say that their outline should be the size of a hand, bigger if they like. (In higher-level classes, say that the object should almost fill up the sheet.) Explain that they are each going to write some sentences inside the outline of their object. 2 Dictate the beginning of the first sentence to be written inside the drawing: This is . . . Tell them to finish that sentence and then write some more sentences saying why the object is important to them, when they got it, and so on. 3 After a while, say that anyone who has filled in all the space inside the outline can write more sentences outside their outline if they want. 4 When everyone has written some sentences, students form groups of three to six and read out what they wrote. Say that they can ask questions about each other’s objects. Comment The outline not only concretizes the topic for the students, but says quite clearly that it is not necessary to fill the whole page. Both facts make it relatively easy for students to begin to write. A final point on the matter of getting students interested is that poorly motivated students are frequently anti-authoritarian in attitude. There are many things you can do to try to create a non-authoritarian mood. Of course, a key way of doing this is to let your sense of humor come out. More generally, as appropriate, try, sometimes, to be relatively conversational in tone. This is not the same thing as trying to make your class of teens feel you are one of them (which is usually a really bad idea). It is merely a way of being more human in manner. One example of a concrete step towards achieving this is to try to find alternatives to ‘echoing’ – the term for when a

teacher repeats a student contribution with fairly level or falling intonation, like this: TEACHER: Who can tell me a room in a house? STUDENT 1: Kitchen . TEACHER: Kitchen . STUDENT 2: Bedroom . TEACHER: Bedroom , etc. An easy alternative to echoing acceptable and audible student contributions is to respond in a way that is clear, yet conversational, and which perhaps also invites elaboration: Ye s , I think so too , I agree , Really? , Oh, why? , Good point and so on. Large classes There is no use pretending large classes are ideal. All kinds of things become more and more problematic as class size burgeons, e.g. activities which involve movement; oral pair work and group work (especially in a classroom with hard, echoing surfaces); monitoring any kind of individual and group work; learning about each student as an individual; catering simultaneously to your lowest, highest and average proficiency learners. But some teachers do seem to cope with large classes better than other teachers do. How do they manage this? Some of their success may come from their personalities. There just are people, for instance, who have charismatic, engaging personalities which enable them to capture and hold the interest of large crowds. Although there are ways of becoming more like them – by taking voice and drama lessons or lessons in presentation skills, for example – there tend to be limits on the extent to which people can fundamentally change their personalities. But it should be within the reach of every teacher of large classes to make their job easier by adopting appropriate practices, procedures and techniques. Throughout the book you will find many ideas relevant to managing large classes more successfully. There can be few schools in which teachers are able to take good discipline in the

classroom utterly for granted. Usually, in order to establish the kinds of behavior that are key to a good learning environment, teachers need to invest considerable time, intelligence, patience and planning. Even with such investment, for some teachers – perhaps an increasing number – maintenance of discipline is the concern of their working lives. The purpose of this chapter is to suggest practices which might help teachers avoid or overcome a good many difficulties in this area. It is organized as follows:  Part one: Basics of maintaining order – 30 key principles  Part two: Five routines, or repeating procedures, for improving discipline  Part three: Peer mediation; four procedures that both develop students’ English and introduce a method which, through structured reflection and discussion, addresses causes of poor behavior Basics of maintaining order Establishing foundations for orderly behavior 1 Decide what basic kind of teacher you want to be Cowley who questioned a large number of students, concludes that there are basically two kinds of teachers able to maintain order in a classroom: ones who are firm but fair and ones who are scary. A third kind, teachers who want to be their students’ friend were judged to be poor at controlling their classes and were not well respected. I shall assume below that you want to be a firm-but-fair teacher, not one who is frightening or who tries to curry favor and thereby loses respect. 2 Learn about your school’s policies and rules most schools have school-wide rules of behavior. These may be set out in a booklet given to every teacher and perhaps also to students when they first enroll. Or you may need to ask other teachers informally. In any case, if school-wide rules exist, think about how to make them a basis for your own class rules.

In your first lesson , make a list of rules and make them clear Devoting part of your first lesson to rules of behavior makes it less likely those students will later act unacceptably out of real or feigned ignorance. 4 Get your students involved in framing the class rules A good basic procedure is to write out a list of suggested rules and bring them to the class as a proposal. Go through the rules one by one inviting suggestions about additions, omissions and rewordings. Invite discussion – especially on the reasons for each of the rules. Note down the rules agreed on and bring the final version to the next lesson. 5 Take care with the wording of rules Gather coal points out that rules can often be more effective when they are worded rather generally. He gives the following example : A school has a rule saying No running inside the school . Some students deliberately walk backwards bumping into people and say that there is no rule against it; they were not running. So a better rule would be something like Walk safely and considerately in the school . Besides being both clear and encompassing, this wording has the additional advantage of indicating why the rule exists – to maintain a safe environment. In any case, psychologists tell us that positive wordings, such as Walk , tend to be more effective than negative ones, such as No running . 6 Consider all key categories of rule Rules are necessary to protect or maintain the following: a health and safety, e.g . Use things in ways that are safe for you and safe for others the property of individuals and of the school, e.g. We must respect other people’s property , The only person who should take anything out of a bag is the owner of the bag c the rights of others, e.g. Respect the beliefs and feelings of others , We must use polite language d the educational process, e.g . We must help ourselves and others to learn , When a student ‘has the floor’, everyone else should be quiet and listen , When the teacher has an announcement or is explaining something, everyone should be quiet and listen . Typically, (a)–(c) are covered by all- school rules, leaving (d) as the category for which extra, class-specific rules are needed. However, it may be prudent additionally to consider a ‘rule about rules’. For

$instance, if students feel they do not have to follow the rules until the bell rings or until you manage to get their attention, the onset of every lesson will be delayed. So the following may be a useful rule too: We follow the class rules from the moment we begin to enter the room until we have left it after being dismissed . 7 Consider ratifying the rules some teachers find it helpful to draw up the final draft of their rules as a contract which they and their students formally sign. An additional option is to ask students each to make a copy of the rules for their parents, sign it, take it home and show it to their parents and bring back a note from their parents saying they have seen the signed rules. 8 Plan the consequences for violations of rules many educators recommend making an ordered list of consequences running from light to heavy. If a student has broken a rule, begin by imposing the lightest consequence appropriate for that violation. If the student persists in misbehaving, impose a slightly more severe consequence and so on. One reason for adopting the ‘graded step’ method is that, in the case of most infractions, light but definite consequences work better than immediate serious penalties, which are very likely to cause resentment. Among relatively light consequences that you can impose are requiring students to say both how they have misbehaved and what they should in future do instead. As a medium consequence you might phone a student’s parents. And/Or implement the practice of keeping parents informed as follows: Type up and make multiple copies of a small form with these questions on it: 1. What did I do wrong? .......................................... 1 Why wasn’t my action acceptable? ....................... 2 What should I have been doing instead? ............... 3 What will I do in the future? ................................$

If a student misbehaves, get a copy of the form and go through it with the student. Fill it in according to what the student says. Make a copy for your records and mail the original to the student’s parents. A heavier consequence might be a ‘detention’ , especially a detention on a Saturday. Of course, your students must know in advance what the full range of consequences is and it is very wise to inform parents too about your overall approach and about what the range of consequences is. 9 Remind your students of what the rules are Periodically review the rules. It is especially important to do this during the first two weeks. Doing this greatly increases the likelihood that the rules will be followed in the long term. 10 Consider the larger context of rules Over time, problems are likely to arise if there is a fundamental mismatch between rules set in a school and those which are accepted in the society as a whole. For instance, rules which are made up and enforced in an autocratic manner are likely to engender resentment and friction if the society as a whole is democratic. Nor is it likely that democratic rules will brilliantly succeed in a setting where it is normal for people to accept whatever rules have been set by tradition and authority. Building on your foundation 1 Learn everyone’s name as fast as possible Knowing your students’ names makes a world of difference, particularly if you use their names mostly when giving positive feedback, e.g. Marten just gave us a very useful word or That was well put, Rita . 2 Decide who should sit where Students find it much easier to get seated and settled promptly if you have told them in advance which seat is theirs. Fixed seating also makes it vastly easier for you to learn everyone’s name. Finally, if an assigned seat is empty, you can tell immediately who is missing; this means you may not have to use up much time taking attendance. There are a few things to keep in mind when

planning who to put where:  Mixing up boys and girls often helps improve behavior generally.  It makes sense to separate students likely to carry on private conversations. (But see ‘Friendship pairs’, 1 . 1 , for an alternative.)  The best place for potential trouble-makers is front and centre, as long as they are not all clumped together.  Students who dislike each other should not have to sit directly next to each other.  Plan varied lessons many 11 - to 16 -year olds lack the perseverance and the power of concentration which underlie an ability to finish long tasks all in one go. They tend to be restless, impatient, easily distracted and prone to boredom. Good planning can go a long way towards helping you deal with these predictable tendencies. For a start, you need more tasks for any given lesson with 11 - to 16 -year olds than you would if you taught older teens or adults. The tasks should be varied too – not just in topic or skill and language focus but in many other ways as well. For instance:  Focus on different aims at different stages of the lesson.  Students should sometimes work individually and at other times in pairs or groups.  From time to time they should try working with new partners.  Ask them sometimes to work at their desks and at others to stand at the board or move around the room in order, say, to carry out a series of short conversations.  Balance quiet, study-like tasks with activities that have a game-like character. 4 Plan transitions from one task to another with young learners, you need to bring one task to an end and move on to another swiftly and smoothly as soon as you notice the first signs of boredom. Planning can do a lot to help you make these transitions in a confident, competent manner.

5 Give instructions clearly and efficiently For instructions to be maximally effective they must, first of all, be clear. Also, the fewer instructions you give and the more concise these are, the easier it will be for students to notice and remember them. An added advantage of reducing the number and length of instructions you have to give over the course of a lesson is that this can give students an enhanced feeling that things are running smoothly to an overall plan, and this in turn can do a lot to help them feel more confident about having you as their teacher. 6 Take predictable concentration trends into account Many students find it easiest to concentrate during the first 1 5 or 20 minutes of a lesson so this is often the best time for intensive review or any particularly challenging exercise on new material. Without regular changes of pace, concentration may sag deeply around the middle of a lesson. This could be a good time for a brief spell of movement or music or other respites from sedentary brainwork. Towards the end of a lesson concentration may be trending upwards again. This is a good time to review the challenging material you covered near the beginning of the lesson. 7 Plan how you are going to get everyone’s attention while keeping your voice at normal volume First of all, begin most lessons with an activity that is especially likely to grab your students’ attention and get them all looking in the same direction. Hold up an interesting object or photo or direct their attention to a display on your board or OHP screen that is visually interesting (e.g. a picture) or easy to take in (e.g. a short, funny text). You need as well to have a way of bringing your class back together again after any pair work or group work or indeed after any individual work that your students are likely to do at greatly varying speeds. There are various techniques you can use to make this possible:  Have on hand a number of noisemakers (e.g. various small bells, chimes and rattles) for use in getting everyone’s attention  Give some instructions and other messages by writing them on the board (e.g.

When you finish, close your books ). Not everyone will notice these messages so, for instance, ring a small bell and, when your students look at you, point to the message.  Turning out the lights can get a class to stop talking.  Holding up a sign of a scowling face saying Shhhhh ! can be effective and also create a little amusement.  However, techniques such as the ones just mentioned work only if used sparingly. The most reliable tool is, unfortunately, the hardest to describe. Put simply, it is this. You need to be able to look like someone who expects students to be quiet and listen as a matter of routine. Whatever you do, do not shout. 8 Communicate your teaching goals Make sure your students know what the learning aims of activities are. They are much more likely to stay on task if they know what the task is for. It is especially helpful to spend a bit of time on this when you do an activity of a new sort. Create and exploit opportunities for positive acknowledgement It is a rare student who does not need positive feedback. This can range from a pleased acknowledgement Yes, that’s a very good example, Maite to outright praise That’s a really great story! The ending is believable but also a complete surprise!. The how, when and how much may need to vary quite a bit from student to student. A few prefer a regular flow of compliments and encouragement that the whole class can hear. Others are satisfied if it is mainly their best work that is singled out for a special note or quiet word or two. Positive feedback is particularly important in the case of students who tend to misbehave (but not of course when they are actually misbehaving). Some such students may react best to acknowledgement that you pass on to them one-to-one outside of class e.g . I liked your drawings today. Would you be willing to draw at the board some time? . In general, the most effective feedback tends both to specify what you liked and to

inform the student about its usefulness. For example, You have capitalized all the right words. This makes your writing especially easy for us to read rather than Good work or Much improved . 10 Keep your students fruitfully occupied Students who have any tendency at all to become unruly are most likely to do so if they are not on task. Make sure at all times that everyone has been assigned a useful task (or set of task options) which is within their level of competence. 11 Be firm, especially in the beginning One of the easiest ways to lose control of a class is to become known as someone who is easy to talk:  out of things such as the enforcement of rules, e.g. rules against tardiness  into doing or allowing things you hadn’t planned to, e.g. playing another song when you had only planned to play one As much as you may actually incline towards flexibility about such things, you may not be in any position to do so until your ability to maintain control of a class has been demonstrated over a period of a few months . Then you can relax the rules now and then. All this is summed up in various versions of the old teachers’ saying, Be firm at the beginning of the year and you will thank yourself near its end . The version I heard first, Never smile till Easter , is perhaps a bit extreme! 12 Be fair Early and mid-teens are sometimes sensitive about issues of fairness to a degree that can be quite astonishing. In order to forestall problems in this area, take time now and then to consider whether you are evenly dividing positive feedback and attention generally. For example, during times in a lesson when you call on individual students with questions, do you spend more time relating to some students than others? There are a few things to look out for here. If you pause to ask questions while writing on the board, it may be that you generally stand at the same side of the board slightly turned towards it. This may mean that at such times you always look more at one side of your class than at the other. Or, like many teachers, you may find that your

attention gravitates towards your most vocal students, or towards the ones who are best at making eye contact, or (it is possible!) towards a student you find unconsciously appealing because he or she reminds you of someone else. And beware of tendencies or impressions which cause you to divert attention away from particular students. For instance, it is risky to make assumptions of this sort: Kazuo looks like he just wants to be left alone so I won’t put him under any pressure . My experience suggests that students are not so easy to figure out just from how they look and that ones who seem to have a ‘don’t bother me’ demeanor are as likely as anyone else to feel bad if they get less attention than the rest. In fact, so easy is it to be misled by impressions or just to overlook things in this area that it is a very good idea from time to time simply to ask students one-to-one, Do you think I am treating you fairly? 13 Answer questions clearly and respectfully asking a teacher a sincere question is seen as a risk by many students. So much depends on the teacher’s reaction. A reply that seems dismissive, perfunctory or unclear can have a powerful, negative effect on a student’s attitude. If you do not know an answer, admit it. Try, though, to find out so you can answer in a later lesson. 14 Use the whole room Lay claim to the whole room. Go everywhere you can as often as you can, especially (but not just) during pair work and group work. Look at what students are writing. Speak to everyone individually at close range as often as is feasible given the size of your class. Once in a while be surprising; go to the back of the room and call on someone at the front, and so on. But in general, move towards anyone causing trouble rather than away from them. To do the latter only teaches them that they can get rid of you by misbehaving. (For more on use of the room see p. 23 .) 15 Try to learn about how you come across to your students Reflect on your verbal and non-verbal behavior. Teachers sometimes have unconscious habits that distract or irritate their students – and teenagers can be very intolerant of these! Perhaps ask a close colleague to sit in on a lesson or two and afterwards tell you if they have noticed

$anything. Or video yourself once in a while. Even a sound recording can be helpful. I, for instance, had 3 years of teaching behind me before a couple of other teachers brought it to my attention that I have spells of saying Uhh with irritating frequency. 16 Avoid sarcasm Teachers who use sarcasm tend to ruin all hope of working constructively with any student they turn it on. If a truant has finally come to class, a comment like Oh, look who’s finally decided to come to class ! is only likely to breed resentment and encourage further truancy. Rather, react in a way that has some chance of making the student easier rather than harder to deal with in future – something like, for instance, a cheery Hello, Kim! 17 Be punctual yourself and expect punctuality from your students Hopefully, your school has rules about lateness and procedures for dealing with infractions. Whether or not it does, there are a few other measures you can take on your own to encourage students to come on time:  The most important thing of all is to start teaching at the very beginning of the lesson period. It only encourages students to come late if you delay the onset of a lesson while latecomers get settled down. The first minutes of a lesson are those during which students are generally most alert. These minutes should not be wasted by you or anyone else!  When presenting your seating plan to the class, tell them that habitual latecomers will be moved to the front of the class. If late comers stop coming late, consider moving them to some part of the class they might like better – but make it clear to them that renewed tardiness will get them moved right back to the front of the class.  Take attendance in such a way that students who are late see you making a note of their tardiness. Insist latecomers stay a minute or two after class and explain to you why they were late. Keep a record of latecomers’ explanations; perhaps ask the latecomers$
