INTRODUCTION The actuality of the research paper. Nowadays, the role of foreign languages in Uzbekistan is getting more developed day by day. Because of achieving independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, many political, economical, cultural and social factors have changed. The educational system of the state was focus of attention of Government.. Our Republic was faced with the necessity of creating new legislation corresponding with new realities, with the conditions of Independence after the Independence was proclaimed and the Parliament coped with this task, there have been adopted new Laws and new Resolutions. Under the guidance of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, special attention is paid to the formation of harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern thinking generation, able to take responsibility for the fate of the Homeland. Therefore , the task of education, the task of rising up a new generation who is capable of national renaissance will remain the prerogative of the state and constitute a priority. At present great importance is attached to the study and teaching of foreign languages. The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve system of foreign languages teaching 1 ” dated from 10 December 2012; the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013; The resolution No 4947 of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017 - 2021 years ” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution“. and approving new teaching plans and programs taking into account introduction of foreign language teaching from the initial classes of the public schools, ensuring its execution are being carried out. All requirements are elaborated wider and deeper for those whose specialty is foreign languages. For example, reading comprehension for them implies the ability of understanding social, specialty- related or other long, complex texts; belles-lettres and scientific-popular books, magazines, periodical materials, instructions, advertisement materials, various information sheets, documents, school record book, questionnaires, informal or electronic letters, memoranda, lectures, critical analyses, and working with working documentation. The aim of our theme is to identify factors that play an important part in influencing classroom atmosphere and introduce some interesting activities aimed at improving and creating English classroom atmosphere in English lessons detecting their contribution regarding this aim. The research aims at identifying factors that play an important part in influencing classroom atmosphere and introduce some interesting activities aimed at improving and creating English classroom atmosphere in English lessons detecting their contribution regarding this aim. Aim the subject of the theme is teaching speaking activities in the EFL classroom and techniques to promote problem solving and decision making skills through different speaking activities. Also different aspect of evaluation of speaking is going to be discussed, such as fluency and accuracy. Different ways of error correction is also one of the main parts of this research paper. The task of theme: - to integrate speaking activities into the language classroom which was previously based on grammar –translation approach. -to discuss the problems of current situation in teaching English; -to study how to improve the situation; -to study how to make class atmosphere; -to study how to make positive classroom environment; 4

- to study freedom of speech. Speaking English is different from writing English, because while we are writing, we have time to think whether a word is appropriate, if the tenses are correct and so on. While speaking English, we don’t. We need to be able to use the correct tenses and choose the correct words and phrases unconsciously. Nobody is able to speak English well without tremendous amount of practice. But the fact is that many people are not so luck that they have an English- speaking environment. That is why I came out with this topic today. I think one of the solutions to this problem is to try to talk English to ourselves. This is quite a good method, because with this method you can practice spoken English at any time. If you do practice your spoken English very often, you won’t be so nervous while you really speak English to other people. I chose this topic for my graduation project paper because during my teaching how important English classroom atmosphere is in English language learning, and that teachers can do quite a lot in English lessons to improve it. The structure of the theme. This research paper will be divided into two parts. In the chapter I, I will try to provide some valuable information regarding factors that influence classroom atmosphere starting with the characteristics of social groups as learners within a class form a type of a social group where its environment is significantly influenced by the group structure, the leading style of a teacher and activities he or she initiates. In the chapter II , I will introduce concrete activities modified to suit needs of classes they will be used in with an aim to observe their influence on classroom atmosphere, as well as gain some valuable information about learners in these classes. This will be realized by an action research in which by the means of my observation of the course of these activities and learners’ feedback I will try to find out whether and how these activities will contribute to the improvement of classroom atmosphere. 5

CHAPTER I. CLASS AS A SOCIAL GROUP AND ITS ATMOSPHERE 1.1. Class as a social group The English language teaching tradition has been subjected to a tremendous change. The change has either been due to the reaction of learners and / or teachers to a given method or has been due to changes in linguistics and psychology theories. Despite such changes one or two older methods (e.g. the Grammar Translation Method) remain stalwart and impervious to educational reforms. The reason for this could be the shortcomings associated with most modern language teaching methods. Nowadays, for example, there is a lot of talk about communication and developing communicative skills 2 . Unfortunately, however, even this has not solved the language problem of many learners in different parts of the world. The problem may be inherent in the Communicative Method itself, or it could be the result of absence of motivation on the part of learners. Looking at the problem from different angles, we find that lack of motivation is the main cause of learners' apathy towards language learning. Why do learners fail abysmally at the end of a long period of wheelings and dealings in the classroom? The answer: anxiety, fear, lack of privacy. Nearly all language teaching approaches have emphasized a top-to-bottom methodology; that is, listening-speaking-reading-writing. The Bottom-Up Approach, however, reverses the emphasis of the traditional top-to-bottom approaches, and puts writing at a higher level of focus. The reason is that writing is an independent activity which removes fear and anxiety, and offers privacy and autonomy. Students in the classroom form a small type of social group which according to has these features: direct interaction and communication of people, same or similar goals or values, where reaching each person’s individual goal is somewhat 2 Breen, M. dependent on the group, relative stability of the group structure and respect to norms and rules of the group’s relationships and activities. A class is after a family the most significant part of a social environment of children, extending their living community and therefore bringing them closer to a wider society. From the social and psychological point of view remarks that, being a member of a class allows a child to take part in interactions with cultural content and thus develop his social skills by means of planned education? These educative interactions are stronger and more objective in terms of their cultural content allowing a child to develop an adequate post in the society. From the Socio-psychological point of view psychologists concentrate mainly on how students, being a part of the class environment, develop their individuality in terms of for example their own opinions based on critical thinking. They also examine how class contributes to the development of social intellect, empathy, tolerance, cooperation with others or appropriate self-assertion (1998). These abilities as they have significant impact on learners and their group based learning are central point of the affective side of activities this thesis concentrates on. Class as a social group with its structure, its norms and atmosphere forms conditions of learners’ learning and development and can indeed be influenced by teachers who should perceive these conditions not only as a background of the learning process but also as a means or even an instrument of education taking them into consideration when planning their lessons and interacting with students 3 . Learner’s adequate integration into the social environment of class and class is one of the basic conditions of his successful learning in this environment that learner’s behaviour with signs of anxiety, insecurity or inadequate reactions towards the class environment should never be perceived as characteristics of a problematic learner but should be viewed as signals for interventions towards change of his social situation. psychological problems of learners, and teachers should never hesitate to ask for help and cooperate with them as they can see the problems from a very valuable point of view of an impartial expert. Classroom atmosphere “is quite a wide-ranging concept encompassing the mood or atmosphere that is created in the teacher’s classroom through the rules set out, the way the teacher interacts with learners, and the way the physical environment is set out” 4 . According to most of my sources and my own experience main determinants of classroom atmosphere are 5 :  Particular specifics of a class, its traditions and norms  personality and style of a teacher  personalities of the learners  interrelationships among learners  relationship between the teacher and learners More information on factors determining classroom atmosphere that can be influenced to the advantage of the classroom dynamics is gathered in the chapter called Improving classroom atmosphere in English lessons. This work discusses the effects of a positive classroom environment and its’ impact on student behaviour and achievement. It also provides strategies for developing expectations for student achievement and the importance of parental involvement. A positive classroom environment is essential in keeping behaviour problems to a minimum. There are a number of ways in which teachers can create positive classroom environments. Some of them will be discuss within this paper. It is essential for teachers to start the class year with high expectations in order to guarantee a positive climate. To ensure an atmosphere of success, teachers must explain why expectations are important. By allowing and encouraging parents to be involved within the classroom; students and parents feel that what is occurring in the classroom is important. child’s education are two factors that play a crucial role in having a successful class year as well as having a positive classroom environment. Five Steps to Improvement. Step Description. 1. Encourages disability awareness and self-discovery. Help students identify their areas of strength and areas of need. 2 .Teach students about special education services. Help them understand what services are available to them based on the needs identified in their IEP. 3. Teach students to self-monitor their work. This allows them to see their own progress and identify areas they need to work on. This gives them ownership for making the steps necessary to meet their goals. 4. Prepare students for participation. Students need to be aware of what takes place in an IEP meeting so that they have the understanding to be an active participant. 5 Learners fiction and nonfiction can be used to teach about diversity and increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of people with disabilities. Literature can be used to help students realize that there are things that make all people different and all people special 6 . Teacher’s leading style significantly influences classroom atmosphere and in order to do so in a positive way the humanitarian approach to teaching and learning seems to be preferable in case of classroom atmosphere as according to requires teachers to:  approach learners with authentic behaviour;  accept each learner as a human being unconditionally;  empathize with learners in terms of both their emotions and intellect. This is in correspondence with creative leading style based on which suggests these following principles useful for initiating creative classroom atmosphere: Accepting learner’s personality and individuality. themselves, their problems and opinions value them and are interested in their reasoning. He lets learners know that he also benefits from being in contact with them. He shows that he wants his learners to understand him not just to listen to him and obey. In case of a different opinion he expresses disagreement and not rejection or disproval and explains well his different point of view not pushing the learners to change their opinion but providing varied points of view for the learner to consider and decide for himself. Teacher doesn’t have to accept learner’s opinion but he always accepts learner’s individuality. He critically assesses learner’s actions and may reject it but should never reject or criticize the learner as a person making distinction between the learner’s actions and his or her qualities as a person. Teacher admits when he’s wrong and acknowledges this mistake for both him and the learners to learn from it. Mistake is viewed as a reason to search for a new way not as a reason to look for a punishment. 1.2 Encouraging Creativity. Teacher accepts leraners’ spontaneity, their intuitive approaches, methods and procedures, initiates inventive, creative, playful, game-like activities, encourages questions, search for alternatives, original solutions and appreciates their fantasy. To put these methods into practice a teacher should be open minded and creative himself. Creating a cooperative and supportive classroom atmosphere. Teacher encourages learners to react to opinions and actions of their classmates for example by the use of group discussions where suggestions are being considered and evaluated to lead to conclusions and choice of possible other steps. Rules are being established by the group as a whole and every member needs to understand their purpose. The teacher initiates team cooperation and encourages learners to evaluate themselves and each other teaching them to accept and appreciate each member of the group including them. He is supportive of each learner and his appropriate self- assertion within the group supporting each learner’s individual activity unless it is in contradiction to values of our society or other learner’s activities. 10

There are many different distinctions of teachers and their leading styles available in specialized literature, however J. Alan with reference to Gordon, describes very interesting division of teacher’s leading styles, connected to the topic of this thesis, distinguishing Instrumentally specialized style, Instrumentally integrative style and Expressive learner oriented style and thus evaluating both their didactic as well as affective contribution. For this thesis it is useful to mention at least the Instrumentally-integrative style as which has the best results in learning as well as group morals and therefore classroom atmosphere. Instrumentally-integrative style:  tries to adapt aims of the class system in the interest of learners;  emphasizes tasks connected to learners’ needs in terms of direct satisfaction raising from class activities and personal interaction;  reaches integration combining authority, advice, convincing and personal influence. The teacher in interaction with learners adapts the demands to learner’s ability to react. He uses informal leaders of the class to influence others to fulfil the tasks. He offers help with planning the work, evaluation is based on achievements as well as cooperation and effort of learners, encourages by praise, monitors that everyone is learning the same, encourages discussion and is interested in students interest even beyond the class environment. He organizes learners into groups which work on separate tasks but within one collective project. Excellent results as well as high group morals are expected based on this style 7 . Even though teacher’s leading style is a significant element of his behaviour there are many other elements that influence teaching claims that, according to different studies, the variety of ways a teacher react to a situational context participate on creating the atmosphere of a teaching/learning process.  “the teacher’s view of learner’s potential and abilities;  faith in his own abilities as a teacher;  demands of superiors, supervisors;  other motivating factors;  awareness of connections between the possible results of his teaching and the long term higher goals that are important for the teacher as an individual” 8 . Humour inside a classroom. Teacher can significantly help to create positive classroom atmosphere by incorporating humour into his lessons and interaction with students. Teacher’s humour should be a way to ease for example a potentially stressful situation, to reduce tension, reduce possible fear of authority as well as sooth conflicts or reduce feelings of embarrassment. It can also be a way to encourage learners and show teacher’s support. It can help students to remember a certain subject matter or increase their concentration. Humour can also enable teacher to communicate information or introduce topics which would be very hard or even impossible to discuss in a serious tone. Humour is known to have the ability to improve classroom atmosphere, bring teacher closer to learners, increase solidarity, cooperation and social cohesion of the class as a whole. However it is important to bear in mind that humour used by a teacher should be authentic and natural to be accepted by learners. Teachers who try to involve humour that doesn’t come naturally for them at any costs usually cause more harm. According to my opinion as well as various sources humour should never be used as a means of assaulting learners, pressuring them, mocking or ridiculing them or in other way humiliating them for example by using irony or sarcasm. Further adds that teachers should never use would be humorous remarks with an under meaning of aggressive relief of their own tension or stress. Likewise misused humour is more than likely to produce anxiety and other undesirable feelings on the part of learners. Even though experienced and creative teachers seem to be able to use humour more effectively every teacher can approach learners with a smile or just 8 Gebhard, J.G. with an attitude of not taking everything too seriously. Creating a positive classroom environment is an important aspect of effective teaching. By creating positive classroom environments, teachers are provided the opportunity for better classroom discipline and management. A positive classroom environment is essential in keeping behaviour problems to a minimum. It also provides the students with an opportunity to think and behave in a positive manner. Positive classroom environments help to enhance, promote, and encourage students’ learning in all academic settings. The classroom environment can be defined in terms of the students’ and teachers’ shared perceptions in that environment. There are a number of ways in which teachers can create positive classroom environments. Some suggestions for creating a positive classroom environment includes: starting the year with high expectations, encouraging student involvement, making the classroom visually appealing, getting parents involved, and using effective praise and effective feedback. It is essential for teachers to start the class year with high expectations in order to guarantee a positive classroom environment. The implementation of positive expectations should occur on the first day of class. By doing this, the students will gain a sense of ownership & responsibility for their actions. This implementation will encourage them to behave and act appropriately with an academically structured setting. Teachers should adhere to these expectations throughout the class year 9 . Teachers must strictly adhere to the structured guidelines set forth at the onset of the academic year. Failure to do so will undermine the process and students will revert to previous undesirable behaviours. To ensure a positive classroom environment, teachers must explain why expectations are important. Students must also have an input in the development of a positive environment. This involvement will allow them to become stakeholders in the learning process and encourages an atmosphere of shared beliefs. their own decisions about learning. One possible strategy utilized to encourage student involvement is the use of classroom monitors. The monitor (s) can be either an individual student or a group of students. These students will have assigned tasks to be carried out on a daily bases within the classroom. This engaging activity allows them to have positive interaction with their peers with the classroom setting. As a result, the students are provided an opportunity to take on leadership roles. The classroom should also be arranged and set-up in a way that promotes and increases students’ learning through group cohesiveness. 1.3 Interactive games Interactive games have several beneficial functions. They can serve as a source of information regarding learners as individuals as well as learners as a group and at the same time improve classroom atmosphere in terms of the topic a particular game is focused on. In other words they have the ability to give information about a learner while influencing him in a desirable way 10 . Apart from these informative, educative or therapeutic effects some interactive games are used to relieve tension or evoke positive feelings. Interactive activities are usually based on learner’s self-expression leading to self-reflection and self-correction where the role of a group environment is essential for creating a facilitating atmosphere and providing feedback. Many of these games work on the principle of creating a model of a social situation often using drama techniques trying for example to imitate a fairytale or replay a situation that previously happened in the group and playing it in different variants, looking for the most appropriate one. However, according all these model situations have to:  “respect individual potential of a learner;  be connected to his inner situation (experience, motivation)  enable self-expression and its pedagogical or therapeutic management” 11 10 Gebhard, J.G. He adds that techniques used within these games are based on a projection of inner conflicts into activities, behaviour and relationship and that is why they require Formation of an accepting classroom atmosphere. The real change in learner’s minds or behaviour comes primarily from feedback whose functions can be compared to a mirror showed to a learner by other classmates and the atmosphere surrounding group interactions. Freedom of speech. All learners should be given the possibility to express their opinions, stay quiet or even stand aside. Nondirective, cooperative leading of the model interactions. Teacher should act as a facilitator of an activity or a game initiating, coordinating and encouraging group interaction concentrating on negotiating and coordinating feedback. Authoritative, directive leading approach is according to unsuitable 12 . Well prepared teacher. It is very important for the teacher to be educated in the field of interaction techniques and well prepared for their realization in the classroom since they often deal with conflicts and can put him into very demanding situations involving learner’s emotions which may sometimes get out of control. Several authors including however warn teachers not to play ‘therapist’ and instead try to create model situations which correspond rather with a thematic game (play) then a therapist session. According to the main point of interactive activities isn’t to solve the model problem but obtain authentic feeling or a sense of sharing and belonging, encouraging self-reflection, sociability, social creativity and social intelligence as a whole. They can be used for the training of optimal communication, adequate self-assertion or for improving learner’s relations, better understand problematic situations or learner’s individual problems. For these aims to be fulfilled without any harm to learners it is really important to pay enough attention to careful, thoughtful planning 12 Gebhard, J.G. Choosing a game. When choosing a game a teacher must be aware of the fact, that not every game can be used at any time and with any group. It is very important to give enough thought to the process of selection considering things as for example the current problems and issues in the classroom, learner’s age, how well they know each other, learner’s individual reactions as well as some possible negative reactions as refusal to cooperate and so on. “Every group is different and the balance and emphases of activities will need to be different for every group you teach. In the end it is a matter of your temperament, your class’s temperament, the complex interaction between them, and ultimately your own sensitivity, that must determine how you structure group activities, what you include and what you leave out”. 13 Activities aimed at the affective part of learning should be incorporated regularly and preferably in a continuous sequence one in consideration of the others in order to not only establish but also maintain the atmosphere they help to create also remarks .Whatever the composition of your group, you will probably find that the dynamics shift during the course of a term and what was an appropriate strategy in the first weeks may no longer be suitable or necessary by mid-term. When planning out what activities to select, you will need to be constantly responsive to changes in roles and relationships within the group. A teacher should also select activities which he feels comfortable using as the learner’s can sense a lot from teacher’s behaviour and are influenced by it. According to “if you feel constraint or awkward, then your group is not likely to feel at ease either. On the other hand, an open mind and willingness to experiment may give you some pleasant surprises”. Aside from providing information for possible self-reflection and self- correction feedback also has another important function teaching a child to discover the value of other person’s point of view and the benefits different point of view can bring. In other words teaches a child to appreciate the value of an 13 Hadfield (1992) 16

alternative. However for all this to be possible a feedback according to needs to match these requirements: Be acceptable to the person that it is provided to making sense to him and be beneficial to him helping him in some way to understand, realize or accept something. According it is very important to set and explain rules of giving feedback in advance in order to eliminate negative undesirable strategies of feedback which can be contra productive. The basic rule should be never to provide evaluative or judgemental feedback saying for example “this is wrong”, “you are mean” but instead showing how something made us feel “This made me feel or think....” showing by the means of feedback what is going on inside our mind. Be useful for the person that it is provided to, being beneficial and helpful to him not making things more complicated but making them easier for him clear and relevant and concentrated only to the topic that it is concerned with. Be provided at the right time as it is not always good to provide feedback straightaway. For example in case of tiredness of learners or conflictive situations it is better to provide learners with some extra time for their emotions to cool down before giving them feedback. Be concerned only with characteristics, qualities and behaviour that is can be improved or at least influenced by the person. Pointing out things that cannot be influenced at that time only raises the level of stress. It is also undesirable to overload a person with exhaustive evaluation which can lead to a shock. All of this is necessary to bear in mind during interactive activities to avoid possible traumatizing of learners especially those who cannot or do not want to participate. According to these principals have to be followed for the suitable course of interactive activities:  Principle of absolute voluntariness of self-expression and involvement;  Principle of the right to stop participating on an activity anytime without having to give a reason;  Principle of the right to express one’s opinion concerning the actual course of events or the facilitator’s (teacher’s) proceedings; 17

 Principle of trust that everything that happens in the group stays in the group. Depending on the nature of an activity participants should be engaged in individual work first, then to be put in pairs or small groups (of 3/4/8) and only then asked to work as a big group. This grouping technique (sometimes called TPS – think, pair, share) allows filtering ideas, negotiating them within smaller groups and building confidence of participants. This technique also allows making an equal contribution to the discussions. Otherwise, if to start from big group activities there is always a danger that some participants can keep silence while others can dominate. (Look at Activity 1 of the sample session in the Appendix for more ideas about this grouping technique). Grouping and regrouping are also beneficial in allowing participants to communicate with a maximum number of people and get a maximum number of ideas. Grouping and regrouping instructions can be physical (put them in groups yourself), verbal (saying “Form pairs”) or calling out categories (like salt, pepper, mustard, etc.). While putting them in groups physically, it is advised to apologise and respect cultural conventions of the participants. If you allow the participants to form groups themselves, they can end up staying with the same people all the time, whereas calling out categories can help to mix the participants very well. (Look at Activity 2 of the sample session in the Appendix for more ideas on how to group participants). If you deal with a group of participants who do not know each other, group building activities can create a secure and friendly atmosphere. The relationship of the participants with each other is very important for group dynamics. The Facilitator can make or break trust by making verbal comments, his/her body language, etc. 18

Group activities based on a shared task bring the participants closer, both physically and emotionally. Group activities should allow the participants to take different roles (leader, reporter or a task manager), try to offer something for each learning style (visual, kinaesthetic, etc.) and let participants demonstrate their different abilities (drawing, story-telling, poem composing, analysing, etc.). Open questioning. Open questions encourage members of the group to talk more freely. They also allow other people to express and expand their own views. Below are some examples of open questions: “What do you think about this topic?” “Where would you like to go on holiday?” “How did you spend your weekend?” “Why have you chosen this particular job?” In contrast, a closed question requires only a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and thus will not be very helpful for participants to reveal much about themselves. These questions though might be useful as opening questions in a conversation. For example: “Do you like such weather?” “Did you have any hobbies as a child?” “Have you ever been to some other countries?” CHAPTER II. IMPROVING ATMOSPHERE IN ENGLISH LESSONS 2.1. Specifics of English classroom atmosphere They are carried out a research for their book Classroom Dynamics concerned with teachers’ most common staffroom complaints about problems involved in the teaching/learning process sending out questionnaires to language 19

classs around Britain. The results were very surprising to them as the teachers were far less concerned with activities and techniques of teaching English then by the class atmosphere or the chemistry of the group of learners mentioning problems with learner’s cooperation, with learners refusing to work with each other, refusing regrouping, different levels of motivation and participation or significant differences between learners as personalities leading to conflicts, intolerance, disability to deal with problems, to compromise, teacher-dependency, spirit-killing learners, no trust in the group and so on. Another research aimed at learners showed that they as well consider the affective part of language learning very important mentioning the teacher’s attitude and the relations among learners as factors influencing their learning. There are many materials for teachers to have a chance to improve their teaching in terms of teaching the four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing or grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation but there isn’t much practical material concerned with the affective part of teaching/learning process as classroom atmosphere or classroom dynamics dealing with topics like relations among students, tolerance or cooperation. Share the opinion of that this may be due to the fact that these topics were probably not as important in the past when teacher-centred learning was the most common in language classrooms. However it is very important to pay attention to the affective part of learning now as today cooperative and communicative language learning employing pair work and group work has become the norm and it wouldn’t be effective or successful without good relationship and supportive attitude between learners as they are the source of learning to one another. Even research in social psychology confirms that cohesive groups have better results. “A positive group atmosphere can have a beneficial effect on the morale, motivation, and self-image of its members, and thus significantly affect their learning, by developing in them a positive attitude to the language being leaned, to the learning process, and to themselves as learners” 14 . 14 (Hadfield, 1992, p. 10). 20

Hadfield uses the term “Successful group” connecting all the attributes mentioned above to describe what this term stands for in particular:  cohesiveness of a group;  positive, supportive atmosphere of trust among members as well as positive attitude to the learning experience, the language and culture studied;  positive self-image of its members supported by others, tolerance;  members feel comfortable with expressing their individuality, feel secure and accepted;  ability to compromise;  ability to define the goals both group and individual;  willingness to cooperate with all members of the group productively;  ability to listen to each other;  ability to take turns in speaking and activities;  ability to be open-minded, welcome new ideas, empathize with others and respect their different point of view;  self-reliance of the group, ability to overcome problems on their own;  sense of fun. When a new group is formed and a good atmosphere is established it does not necessarily mean that it will stay that way throughout the whole year because maintaining a cohesive group is much more difficult than forming a new group. Student’s groupings and their influence on classroom atmosphere According to pair work is a way of increasing students’ participation, the amount of students’ practice, and language use as a whole. He says that: “It can be used for an enormous number of activities whether speaking, writing or reading” 15 . … Pair work allows the students to use language and also encourages student cooperation which is itself important for the atmosphere of the class and for the motivation it gives to learning with others to prevent discipline problems working with children or teenagers, Harmer suggests the teacher to remain at the front of the class to watch over the group as a whole and provide feedback at the end to see 15 Harmer (1991) (p. 243). 21

how successful the task was. According to my experience discipline can be also managed when a teacher walks around a classroom helping individual pairs without concentrating on one pair for too long. Harmer further suggests If the noise rises to excessive levels then the teacher can simply stop the activity, explain the problem and ask the students to continue more quietly Based on my experience, headphone system when used effectively can be very helpful to keep the level of the noise down as learners enjoy using it and make effort to speak quietly to the microphone in order to be allowed to continue this activity by the teacher. To make sure everyone is working on their task a teacher can use the intercom to hear individual pairs in his headphones and talk to them. The classroom I teach in is equipped with the headphone system where each learner has a pair of headphones available for activities such as dialogues or practicing reading in pairs. This system proved itself to be very useful for such activities as learners enjoy using it very much so it also functions as a motivational factor for them. Harmer also points out that pair work should not last too long as it can get boring and sometimes frustrating working with just one person. Regarding group work Harmer states: In some ways group work is more dynamic than pair work: there are more people to react with and against in a group and, therefore, there is a greater possibility of discussion. This can positively contribute to the classroom atmosphere in terms of learners expressing their opinions and getting to know each other better. There is a greater chance that at least one member of the group will be able to solve a problem when it arises, and working in groups is potentially more relaxing than working in pairs, for the latter puts a greater demand on the student’s ability to co-operate closely with only one person. It is also true to say that group work tasks can often be more exciting and dynamic, than some pair work tasks. The ability of group work to decrease the level of stress in learners and stir up excitement which goes hand in hand with motivation can be very beneficial for learner’s achievements as well as for the classroom atmosphere as a whole. 22

Disruptive behaviour and classroom atmosphere. All teachers at one time or another experience disruptive behaviour, which Harmer defines as behaviour of a student or students getting in the way of the class. The same author also names the teacher, the students and the institution as three possible reasons for discipline problems. As was mentioned earlier in this thesis teacher plays a key role in the classroom having a major effect on discipline and thus being able to influence significantly by his behaviour and actions. He advices teachers to avoid certain things, in order to prevent problems, as inconsistency regarding class rules, issuing threats which will not be carried out, rising their voice, being unfair to the class or its individuals, violating the rules showing students the wrong example or even giving boring classes as one of the major causes of learners’ misbehaviour is boredom. He states that the ability to control a group of students when things get out of hand depends to a large extent on the personality of the teacher, and some teachers certainly appear to find it easier than others. However, he suggests several possibilities of actions that can be taken by any teacher in case of a learner’s misbehaviour as stopping the class to show him what was wrong, reseating, change of activity (to for example writing task) in case of the majority of the group getting out of hand. A teacher should act immediately or right after the class because “the longer a discipline problem is left unchecked, the more difficult it is to take action. Warm and Inclusive Classroom Environment. The type of classroom environment that a teacher creates and encourages can either increase or decrease a student's ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class. The classroom environment should do as much too foster cooperation and acceptance as the teaching methods that the teacher uses. This article describes a number of methods to help teachers plan for and create a classroom that welcomes and supports all children. At the beginning of the year teachers have the goal of establishing a classroom environment that is favourable for helping all students work cooperatively in order to learn. The classroom environment can either improve or impede a student's ability to learn and feel safe and comfortable as a member of the 23

class. Classrooms that encourage emotional well-being create an atmosphere for both learning and emotional development. Educational research supports creating an atmosphere of mutual respect, where students feel relaxed in asking questions and expressing their thoughts and feelings. Some areas to consider when creating an atmosphere of mutual respect are classroom design, classroom procedures, and classroom strategies. Implementing a few strategies that address these areas can help develop a strong sense of community and encourage positive interactions and cooperative learning for students with and without disabilities. A warm classroom environment can lead to increased academic achievement and a sense of pride and belonging in the class. Create a Warm and Well Decorated Classroom. One of the first things a teacher does at the beginning of the class year is organize, arrange, and decorate the classroom. The physical environment of a classroom plays a part in the ownership students feel about their class and more specifically their class. The classroom environment should do as much too foster cooperation and acceptance as the instructional method the teacher uses. Children are sensitive to the atmosphere created in the classroom. Is the classroom warm and inviting? Are all areas of the classroom accessible to all children? Are the walls bleak and lacking in colour or do the decorations help to make the students feel comfortable? Are areas well defined as to their design and purpose? Decorating a classroom with some kind of warmth can help promote a sense of comfort and security. Classrooms tend to be rather cold, bare places until they are decorated. Adding a splash of colour can bring life to a sterile environment. Colour choice is important when decorating a classroom. Teachers should keep in mind that red and orange can make children feel nervous and unsettled while blue and green can help students feel calm. Furthermore, dark colours take natural sunlight out of a room and can even make people feel drowsy and listless Plants, soft chairs, rugs, and pillows can help to add warmth and comfort to a class environment Create a Neat and Organized Classroom While decorations help 24

create a warm environment, organization of the furniture in the room is also important. There should be enough space for all students to easily move throughout the classroom. Teachers should consider the use of universal design. Universal design is designing products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for modification or specialized design. Universal design for instruction is a set of principles that help in the process of designing the classroom environment and instruction so that they are contributing to the learning of all students .Teachers should apply the strategy of universal design for learning to make sure that activities, materials, and equipment are physically accessible and usable by all students. Teachers should also expand safety procedures to all students, including those that are identified with a disability and when teaching, repeat printed directions orally. Desks arranged in neat, orderly rows may make movement throughout the class easier but this arrangement may not help to create a warm, friendly environment. These teachers felt that grouping desks offered several benefits including encouraging cooperative learning, building a sense of class community, and making the best use of the space. Ideal desk arrangements create opportunity for students to be actively engaged in learning and have the opportunity to work cooperatively, when appropriate, with their peers, while still allowing students to navigate the environment safely. Classroom Procedures. Create Special Traditions for Your Class Traditions can help create positive feelings and bond students to their class. Start the morning with a beginning of the day tradition. Students could work together to create a class pledge that is recited every morning before the day begins. One example of a class pledge created by Elementary Class includes the three Cs: "We will Cooperate, We will Communicate, We will Concentrate , and We will have a Good Day." The use of a thought provoking and memorable quote is another possible way to create a special tradition in class. Begin by reading a quote to the class and have students share their thoughts and feelings about what 25

the quote means to them. Traditions can also be used to end the day. Teachers can give students time at the end of each day for a reflective activity. Examples of activities could include creating a picture of something students learned that day, writing a reflective paragraph in a journal, or writing a note to their teacher stating one thing they learned during the day and one thing that confused them. Teachers could also have the class write their own song to sing or a poem to recite at the end of every day. Conduct Classroom Meetings. Teachers can make their classrooms encouraging and supportive by teaching students problem solving and conflict resolution skills in small groups and whole class meetings (defined class meetings as when the teacher assigns a designated time of day when students form a circle and work together to discuss and solve classroom issues and problems. Classroom meetings can help create a sense of belonging and trust for students. Classroom meetings can also encourage children to work together to solve problems while practicing pro-social skills. Browning, used classroom meetings with twenty 1st- grade students to teach them positive forms of conflict resolution and decrease acts of verbal and physical aggression. Prior to the introduction of the class meeting acts of aggression were common in this classroom. After the use of the classroom meeting the number of aggressive acts was significantly reduced. Classroom meetings with fourth and fifth grade students and saw a decrease in the number of disciplinary referrals to the office and an increase in self-esteem. Three possible types of classroom meetings include open-ended meetings, problem-solving meetings, and educational-diagnostic meetings). In an open-ended meeting the topic of discussion can be anything of interest to the group. In a problem solving meeting all class members work together to solve a problem of concern to the class. This could be a problem that involves the entire class or a problem an individual student is facing. The purpose of an educational-diagnostic meeting is to evaluate students' background knowledge before introducing a new 26

topic and assess the level of understanding students have gained for a subject that has recently been taught (Lundeberg, et al.). Following an agenda can be helpful when conducting a classroom meeting . Suggested meeting items include appreciation and compliments, peaceful conflict resolution and problem-solving activities, old business, new business, and a classroom encouragement activity. It is important for students to know how to give and receive compliments. The appreciation and meeting component of a classroom meeting provides teachers with the opportunity to teach students how to give compliments or provide appreciation to classmates as well as how to receive appreciation and compliments. The focus should be on qualities of the student and things they have accomplished (e.g., “Thank you for helping me learn my spelling words for this week.”), rather than on physical appearance (e.g., "I like the shirt you are wearing."). During the peaceful conflict resolution and problem-solving activities portion of the classroom meeting students work together to help students who have identified that they have an individual problem or the class works to solve a problem they feel they are having as a whole (e.g., getting in trouble in the lunch room for not cleaning up after eating). Students work together to develop a list of possible solutions, evaluate those solutions, and the students involved in the problem then select a solution to try. During the old business time of the class meeting students are provided with the opportunity to share how their previous problem solving attempts have worked. This allows for further suggestions if the previous solution was not successful. The new business part of the meeting gives students the opportunity to make decisions about other types of class business (e.g., what colour shirts to wear for field day, how best to prepare for the up and coming science exam, or what to name the class goldfish). Finally, the classroom encouragement activity is designed to give encouragement to the entire class personal note to each student thanking the student for something he/she did or acknowledging specific improvement he/she has made in academics or behaviour. 27

2.2 Classroom Strategies Model and Teach Self-Advocacy and Self- Determination Skills. One of the most important skills teachers can give their students, especially those with disabilities, is to empower them to advocate for themselves. Students need to be able to make their needs and wants known. For example, preclass students need to be able to tell others when they need to use the bathroom. As students get older they need to understand and be able to describe their strengths and weaknesses to their classroom teachers and other people with whom they work. Identified five steps to empower students and help them become self- advocates, takes a different point of view concentrating more specifically on problems in groups based on her research suggesting that there are three potential sources for group problems naming teacher-group conflict, intra-group conflict, and the ‘indigestible’ group member. To help treating these problems she suggests using interactive games and other affectively aimed activities from her book. Most authors share the opinion that the basic tool to avoid much of misbehaviour is creating classroom rules or sometimes called a code of conduct together with students using discussion techniques to agree on them. There are literally hundreds of types of various activities used in classrooms serving different purposes. They are students not only need a warm-up activity to energize at the beginning of the lesson but need a cool-down one at the end to reflect on what they have done and learned in the lesson or during the day in order to leave the classroom with feeling of purpose. She points out that if the students end several lessons with an unfinished activity and hurriedly set homework they may feel quite stressed and pressured at the end of the day. Apart from warm-up and cool-down activities it is also very useful to incorporate short relaxing activities sometimes called a ‘quiet time’. They allow students to take a short break from the communication and interaction which can be very demanding, to work individually and quietly for a while having also a chance to organize their thoughts. This idea is supported by Harmer (1991) who says that “sometimes we must let students work on their own at their own pace. If we do not we will not be 28

allowing the individual any learning ‘space’ at all” 16 (248). He further adds that individual study is a good idea precisely because students can relax from outside pressure (provided there is no time limit or competitive element) and because they can rely on themselves rather than other people Hadfield’s theory based on warm-up, break and calm-down sequence can be applied to the course of the week as well as the whole term or a year where at the beginning teachers incorporate activities for energizing, getting to know each other and at the end allow for the course to have a meaningful closure reflecting on what the class have learned and experienced together. It seems useful to emphasize here that the individual study does not apply only to a part of a lesson either but according to Harmer should be incorporated to the course of the week and the whole year. He reminds teachers not to forget the importance of individual study in their enthusiasm for pair and group work and make the use of learning centres or individual computer terminals. Hadfield further points out that during the year or in the middle of a term a class may experience a sort of stagnation, when learners may feel bored with the routine and low on motivation, sometimes referred to as a mid-term slump. For this time it seems useful to take a break from the usual learning and incorporate some relaxing activities as taking the class to a theatre to see an English play or do something else completely different from the usual routine as working on a special project for example using drama, creating a video or going to the cinema together. These activities can give learners a sense of solidarity and achievement. At the end of a week you can as well take some time to reflect on it and discus goals for the upcoming week. Language lessons also provide great opportunities for incorporating interactive activities improving classroom atmosphere and not being too worried about the time loss and being behind in terms of the syllabus as these activities can be created to have both didactic as well as psychological function. 16 Harmer (1991) (248). 29

Factors to concentrate on when improving atmosphere in English lessons. The classroom atmosphere is dependent on so many factors which can be worked with and influenced in English lessons. This chapter concentrates more specifically on those that will be included in activities introduced in the practical part of the thesis. Attitude to learning. Learners’ attitude towards learning is very important in influencing their achievements and therefore it should be taken into consideration by teachers who should try to initiate activities that would encourage positive attitude to learning and the language it self. These activities can concentrate for example on the following: Positive feelings. As Hadfield (1992) states, “A positive attitude towards oneself as a learner, towards the learning process, and towards the language and culture being studied are obviously essential if any progress is to be made” . 17 Learners however sometimes experience varied negative feelings regarding their learning abilities, their place in a group or the language it self. According to Hadfield’s experience, dealing with student’s negative feelings by patient rational discussion hasn’t been very effective because these discussions concentrate on the negative, the problem and try to solve it logically even though these feelings are an emotional affair. Instead she suggests using affectively aimed activities that evoke positive feelings about student’s themselves, their abilities, the group as a team and the language and its culture .Examples of such activities are introduced in the practical part of this thesis. Individual styles and strategies. Activities aimed at learners learning about their own specific learning style and respecting diverse learning styles of others can be very helpful in establishing a respectful attitude in learners towards each others learning, and the proceedings of a teacher who tries to provide opportunities for everyone to have a chance to experience activities that suit their individual learning styles. 17 As Hadfield (1992) p. 86) 30

Learners’ expectations of what they want to learn and why are closely connected to their learning styles and as young students may not be explicitly aware of their own styles or expectations it is very useful to incorporate activities which will help them to define their expectations their goals and think about their learning strategies? These activities may prevent possible tension that can rise from a lack of recognition of students’ own objectives and strategies or lack of tolerance towards aims and styles of others. that some students want to learn grammar because they feel it helps them to improve their English, others feel that grammar is boring and it distracts them from what they really want to express by using the language as some students learn analytically some prefer intuitive learning others are visual types or have better auditory memory. To this she If each category thinks that its style is the only way to learn, then you have potential for resentment and conflict, unless you help learners to understand how aims, attitudes, and learning styles may differ and also encourage them to start thinking about how they as a group can reconcile and what may be conflicting aims and interests The classroom should be inviting by using bright, and bold colours on the walls. It is stated that no one wants to learn in a dull environment. The teachers should also encourage academic engagement by incorporating the use of word walls and thematic units in the classroom. The word walls and thematic units may serve as motivational tools for the students. These areas should always be organized, neat, and clean. Keeping bulletin boards up-to-date in the classroom encourages students to perform to the best of their ability. Undeniably, the appearance of a classroom leads to a positive classroom environment and a productive class year. Moreover, allowing and encouraging parents to be involved within the classroom can aid in creating a positive environment. Parental involvement in the classroom and in their child’s education are two factors that play a crucial role in having a successful class year as well as having a positive classroom environment. States that, when parents are involved in the classroom, it sends the message that 31

what is happening in the classroom is important. Parents may actively get involved by chaperoning on field trips and taking part in special events that take place at the class and out of class. Teachers should remember to always try to involve those parents who are unable to be actively involved in the classroom throughout the class day. A positive classroom environment is an important tool for establishing a successful and effective class year. There are numerous factors that may have an influence on positive classroom environments. However, it is critical that teachers create a positive classroom environment to encourage the students’ growth. A positive classroom environment enhances the students’ ability to learn and to be productive in and out of the classroom Goals. According to he having a sense of direction and a common purpose is essential for a group to work successfully. However, it is one of the most difficult tasks to set and agree on common goals as a class with each student having different priorities, different learning style and strategies or prefers different approaches to learning languages. While defining and agreeing with students on common aims a teacher has to respect these individual aims and needs for everyone to feel satisfied with the way they learn and be motivated. It is good for students to realize and clarify their own goals and the fact that learning inside a group can help them achieve them even though it will require certain compromises. He recommends using a variety of activities that would help students to think about their individual as well as group aims Confidence. The feeling of trust and confidence in an English lesson is essential for students to be able to learn and practice speaking the language. I agree with this as according to my experience if there is a lack of trust and much insecurity in the group students will be afraid to express their opinions, open-up and use English in front of others simply out of fear of being laughed at or judged for their views or mistakes. If this kind of atmosphere is present in a classroom it will be very difficult for a teacher to work with such group as well as for the learners to learn. It is very important to remind again that the attitude of a teacher 32

is vital in terms of establishing trust and helping students to feel confident using the language by being reassuring, encouraging and comforting however it is perhaps even more important to feel acceptance and support from the group as a whole. According to who wrote an introduction to The Confidence Book, a teacher should incorporate activities which would help build up students language confidence leading them to a greater awareness of just how much they can achieve, even when they think they know very little and allowing them to enjoy and draw on their own strength, feelings and experience his Teaching Foreign Languages in Classs reflects on this topic saying that: “Every student knows more than they think they know. Every student knows much more than the teacher thinks they know. Group cohesion. Cohesiveness of the group plays an important part in influencing classroom atmosphere but there are also many factors that can influence group cohesion itself. Some of them are mentioned in this chapter. Empathy. Understanding each other’s feelings and points of view is an important factor contributing to the formation of sympathetic and friendly relationships among learners. However, this can not be done by only exchanging opinions and transmitting information. Learners have a much greater chance to learn to empathize when they are not only informed about other peoples’ feelings and points of view but also put into other person’s shoes and see things through his eyes for a while. As explains the act of putting yourself in another’s place and looking at things from their point of view leads to a more direct and immediate understanding than the act of listening to and interpreting their words from your own viewpoint. Sense of belonging. People as individuals differ in many ways from each other however when they are a part of one group there is always something they share or have in common with the other members of the group. These similarities are important for their feeling of belonging to this group and realizing these similarities can therefore benefit the cohesiveness of the group as a whole. Hadfield to this topic says: “For a group to be harmonious and cohesive, it must 33

have a definite sense of itself as a group, and the individuals who comprise it must have a sense of belonging to the group as well as sense of their place within it” 18 . She adds that there are many activities and discussions at class and in language lessons in particular that concentrate on differences between people, respecting different values, opinions that are definitely very important but in order to improve the group atmosphere it may be useful to incorporate activities that concentrate on what the members of the group have in common from time to time to keep both in balance (Hadfield, 1992). The individual feeling of achievement is very important in terms of motivating learners to continue learning. Students need to feel that their effort pays off and this feeling of achievement can rise from for example students ability to complete a written task, project, homework or a test independently, seeing that they have learned something and improved in terms of the language studied. However even with individually motivated learners the classroom atmosphere may be lacking the feeling of group achievement which may lead to a rise of tension among learners not feeling motivated to work together and to cooperate because they may not be aware of the benefits learning from each other can bring them. For students to realize these incorporating group product-oriented activities into English lessons on regular bases, which provide the group with common purpose leading to a recognizable, tangible achievement. She further explains that these group activities do not have to end with a written product; students may for example make a video film together, create a dramatic play, a magazine, a short book or complete some short term tasks which can fit into one lesson as creating for example a group song, a poem, a poster, a scrapbook or writing a letter together. The commonality of purpose demands support from group members for 18 ” (Hadfield, 1992, p. 72). 34

each other, and the fact that there is an end-product gives the group a feeling of satisfaction and a sense of pride in them as a group. She also points out that pair work or small group work can be modified to contribute more to the sense of group achievement as well instead of just finishing open-ended as it often does. By making pairs come back to the whole group and share their reflections and receive feedback from others brings the pair or small group work to a definite conclusion. This can be done by for example various pyramid discussions or presentations Group cooperation. It is clear that group cooperation significantly effects classroom atmosphere and that is why the last part of this chapter concentrates on some phenomena that are closely connected to the group cooperation and can be influenced to benefit this atmosphere. 2.3 The classroom and its environment A macro view of the social context of teaching and learning requires that we look at how the classroom relates to the world outside. Indeed, there are many ways in which what happens within the classroom reflects this world outside. As Bowers suggests, the classroom is a microcosm which for all its universal magisterial conventions, reflects in fundamental social terms the world that lies outside the window. This realization from within English language education is supported by discussions already taking place elsewhere, which place the classroom, as a 35

culture, within a wider complex of cultures, between which there are many complex channels of influence. The way in which the classroom mirrors the world outside can also be seen in the interest taken in it by a variety of disciplines: sociology, anthropology social psychology, communicative ethnography suggests that the classroom possesses special features which crystallize the social world, such a routines and scripts, which occur in a controlled context, and which make it particularly attractive to researchers. I shall deal with the question of the classroom as a culture in Chapters 2 and 3, and with its relationship with cultures outside the classroom in Part B. Here, by way of introduction, I shall describe briefly how the complex interconnection between the classroom and the world outside looks on the surface. First of all, the classroom is situated in a host institution, which could be anything from a state class, to a private language institute, to a university or college. The host institution is in turn situated within a host educational environment. In state education, the host educational environment provides strong influences, from parents, employers and so on in the local community, which bear on the classroom. In some cases in English language education, local community influences might be less important. I therefore define the host educational environment as any type of environment which influences the host institution and in turn, the classroom. In private language institutes, this might consist of the market- client companies who send students, potential clients, the whole population of customers and potential customers, and other institutes in competition. This host educational environment would often not be local, but world-wide. In an English language aid project, the host educational environment would consist of the host country’s ministry of education, aid agencies and other involved government institutions from both the host and donor countries, which also might be considered as contributing to market forces. Participation. In order to have a good cooperation in a group it is important for the members to contribute and participate somewhat equally so everyone has a chance to practice their language skills and therefore improve. According to 36

Hadfield equal participation also plays a significant role in learner’s individual motivation to cooperate and be active during lessons as well as in the process of maintaining or establishing a cohesive group. Some group members differ a lot in terms of their participation in the lesson usually due to their personality, their temper and communicativeness or due to their level of language confidence. To encourage shy students to participate more or overly active students to realize they should give other people a chance to express themselves a teacher should choose activities which wouldn’t cause active students to loose enthusiasm and shy students feel too much pressure. To mention an example of such an activity the well know taking turns by passing or throwing of a soft ball during discussions is according on my experience rather effective. Territoriality. The term “territoriality” refers to a phenomenon for which is typical that a group of people is composed of smaller groups that are separated from each other often both physically in terms of their seating as well as psychologically sustaining friendships only within their little group often referred to as a clique. These groups usually want to cooperate only with people from their clique and may dislike or even refuse to work with others. Who explains that this is not only disadvantageous for the group cohesiveness but also for the language learning it self as people who work together or speak together too often develop a certain code, using the same vocabulary and phrases and often end up quite soon knowing everything about each other which leads them to boring artificial discussions or dialogues .It is preferable to prevent territoriality and clique formation from the very beginning of a group existence because cliques once established are not easy to overcome, however, with the use of some fun activities and games, which she introduces in her book called Classroom Dynamics, a teacher can improve the cohesion of a group reorganizing learners into new groups or pairs indirectly and tactfully, in a fun way, without them feeling pressured. 37

Compromising. The ability to make compromises is connected to setting goals and pretty much making all group decisions. The group should function as a support system for all students to have a chance to succeed in full-filing their individual ambitions even though they have different preferences in terms of learning. As, without members being able to negotiate compromise to everyone’s satisfaction the group may become an obstacle in learning and achievements may not be reached by anyone due to negative atmosphere disagreement and dissatisfaction may bring along. According to my experience, in order to learn to compromise, learners need practice in making decisions together which can be provided to them by a teacher who can incorporate discussion based activities which place learners into situations where they are encouraged to come to an agreement or a decision that would satisfy all members of the group. Listening. Being a good listener is a very important quality in a student in terms of learning languages, however learners often seem uninterested in what their classmates are saying to them because they may consider their information boring or may be preoccupied with themselves and with what they want to say next. This is quite unfortunate because they too need other people to be interested in them and their ideas in order to be motivated to continue sharing them. Hadfield recommends activities where learners will need to listen to another member speak because they will need the information they received from the person to continue in an activity, to complete a task or even to win a game. This will encourage them to listen attentively and with interest. Use a whiteboard or blackboard to draw the following:  At the top of the board draw 2 circles (these will be the heads). Elicit «circles".  On each head draw a nose, ears and a mouth. Elicit each as you draw them. Then ask "What's missing?".  Elicit "eyes". Ask "What color are they?" and give the students the options of the colors of markers / chalk you have. Then draw the eyes in the chosen colors with different colors for each set of eyes (NB: it’s ok to have strange colors, such as yellow, more the eyes – this will just make it more fun). 40

 Elicit "hair" and again ask "What color is it? » On one head draw long hair in one color (for the girl) and on the other draw short hair (for the boy) in a different color. Teach / Elicit "long / short hair".  Finally, you'll need to draw 2 bodies. But rather than you draw them you are going to ask for 2 volunteers to do the drawings. For the girl, draw some shoes quite near the head (so that she will be short) and for the boy draw some shoes right down at the bottom of the board (so he will be tall). Have the students draw the bodies so that they join the heads with the shoes. Now It should end up looking something like this:  Now that the completed pictures are on the board, chorus 3 times the following sentences and point to the pictures as you do: - He is tall. - He has short hair. (GB: He's got short hair.) - He has (blue) eyes. (GB: He's got (blue) eyes.) - He has (orange) hair. (GB: He's got (orange) hair.) - She is short - She has long hair. (GB: She's got long hair.) - She has (green) eyes. (GB: She's got (green) eyes.) - She has (brown) hair. (GB: She's got (brown) hair 2. Do "Funny Body" drawings Give a piece of A4 paper to each student and yourself. On your piece of paper, model drawing a head with eyes, nose, ears, mouth, teeth and hair. Make it a really funny picture. Then tell everyone to draw their funny head. Make sure they use colors for the eyes and hair. Next show them how to fold the paper so only the neck shows (so the head is folded behind). Then get everyone to pass their paper to a different student. Now model drawing the body starting from the neck and going down to ankles –make it either a really short or long body and make it as funny as you can. Now have your students draw their bodies. 41

Again, shows everyone how to fold the paper so only the ankles are showing and have everyone pass their paper to another student. Finally, model drawing funny feet and get everyone to draw feet on the heir pictures. Then get everyone to fold up their papers and return each piece to the person who drew the head. Let everyone open up their paper and have a good laugh at the pictures. Now asks everyone to "present" their person in the drawing to the rest of the class – you model first (e.g. "This is Tom. He is short. He has pink hair (GB: He's got pink hair), etc."). Play the "Describe Your Friend" song and do the active listening worksheet Tell the class that they are going to listen to a song about a boy and a girl. Give out either "Describe your Friend Worksheet 1" or "Describe your Friend Worksheet 2" (worksheet 2 is better if you cannot print out colored worksheets). Read the instructions to the class and then play the song. As they song is playing students should do the worksheet activity. Play the song again if required. Finally, go through the song one more time stopping to check answers. If everyone enjoyed the song, you can play it again and have everyone sing along (especially as it’s such a catchy tune!). For the active listening activity use either of the following worksheets:  "Describe your Friend Worksheet 1" is a ‘listen and circle what you hear’ exercise.  "Describe your Friend Worksheet 2" is a 'listen and draw' exercise (this is better if you can't print out the color Worksheet 1) Do the "Describe Your Friend Class Survey" This will give your students the chance to use the lesson structures. Give out the class survey worksheet. Each student should work on their own for a few 43

minutes looking at their classmates and filling in the table about 6 of their friends in the class. Whilst they are doing this, circulate and check and ask questions. Finally, once everyone has finished, ask each student to d describe some of their friends: Ask, "Tell me about your friend", "What does he / she look like?". Then put students in pairs to practice asking about their classmates. Additional activity: Have your students ask about and describe family members (e.g. brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, etc.) Read classroom reader "The Clever Prince" Before class, download and print off the reader "The Clever Prince" from our website. As you go through each page, point to the pictures; elicit adjectives to describe the characters in the story: Teacher: (pointing to the picture of the princess on page 1) who is this? Students: A princess? Teacher: Yes, that's right! And what does she look like? (Elicit description adjectives) Students: She has long, blond hair. (GB: She has got long, blond hair.) Teacher: Yes! And she is very beautiful, isn't she? Students: Yes! Get the students really involved in the story by asking lots of questions such as what the animals (real and fictional) are and what everyone thinks the prince should do to rescue the princess. Play "Guess Who?" For this activity, you’ll need lots of magazine pictures of people. Try and get lots of different types of people pictures, with different color eyes and hair. The more pictures you can find and cut-out before class the better (Note: This is a great resource to have for future lessons, as people pictures can be used in many different ways). In class, lay out all of pictures on the floor or on a large table. Start by saying «My friend has (short, brown) hair, he is (tall) and he has (green) eyes» (GB: "My friend's got (short, brown) hair, he is (tall) and he's got (green) eyes"). 44

Everyone should try and guess which picture you are describing. You can also give additional clues (clothes, etc.). The student who guesses correctly can then have a go describing someone. Now that everyone has got the idea of the game, put students into small groups and have them play the game together. Whilst they are playing, monitor, help and encourage the use of the lesson structures. CONCLUSION During my teaching I realized how important English classroom atmosphere is for both learners and teachers. Learners need to feel comfortable in order to be able to learn and develop positive attitude towards the English language as well as teachers need to feel good in the classroom in order to be able to use and keep developing their teaching skills. Realizing this I decided to address this topic in this in learning more about the factors that influence classroom atmosphere and the ways teachers can improve it. 45

All these factors, mentioned in the last chapter of the theoretical part of this thesis, take part in creating the classroom atmosphere specifically in English lessons and can be influenced by activities teachers can incorporate into their lessons regularly as it are one thing to create a good classroom atmosphere and another to maintain it through out the existence of a group of learners. Chapter I of the project paper work describes activities that involve influencing these factors with the aim of improving classroom atmosphere in English lessons. This investigation deals mainly with the factors influencing classroom atmosphere with concentration on those that can help improve this atmosphere specifically in English lessons. As a class class is a type of a social group the first chapter of this thesis deals with the characteristics of a social group. Its second part concentrates on the class and its atmosphere more specifically looking also at teacher’s role and its influence. The last chapter of the concentrates more specifically on the atmosphere in English lessons discussing topics as student’s groupings, disruptive behaviour as well as the affective aims of activities that can be used in English lessons to improve classroom atmosphere. Contain activities designed to be used in English lessons with the aim of improving and creating classroom atmosphere. I used these activities in different classes of grade 1 to learn more about the groups and detect the influence of these activities on these groups. This was realized by a form of an action research which consisted of my observation of the course of these activities and learner’s feedback which was done by an exchange of letters between me and the learners. From both my observation and learners feedback it was clear that all these activities were successful fulfilling both aims of the practical part of this research in informing me about the group dynamics and learners themselves as well as having a very good influence on learners, motivating them evolving positive feelings and this way contributing to the atmosphere in their classes showing me that these activities when incorporated regularly would have a beneficial long term effect on the classroom atmosphere as a whole. 46

It seems useful to emphasize here that the individual study does not apply only to a part of a lesson either but according to Harmer should be incorporated to the course of the week and the whole year. He reminds teachers not to forget the importance of individual study in their enthusiasm for pair and group work and make the use of learning centres or individual computer terminals. Hadfield further points out that during the year or in the middle of a term a class may experience a sort of stagnation, when learners may feel bored with the routine and low on motivation, sometimes referred to as a mid-term slump. For this time it seems useful to take a break from the usual learning and incorporate some relaxing activities as taking the class to a theatre to see an English play or do something else completely different from the usual routine as working on a special project for example using drama, creating a video or going to the cinema together. These activities can give learners a sense of solidarity and achievement. At the end of a week you can as well take some time to reflect on it and discus goals for the upcoming week. Language lessons also provide great opportunities for incorporating interactive activities improving classroom atmosphere and not being too worried about the time loss and being behind in terms of the syllabus as these activities can be created to have both didactic as well as psychological function.
