Introduction The actuality of this research is that nowadays the government pays great attention to providing growing generation with opportunities to learn foreign literature. Learning and reading literature helps young people to enlarge world, outlook, improve, critical thinking and deepen their knowledge. Masterpiece of writers and novelists contain a lot of information about historical event, people’s life of the past, their problems and hardships. By reading world literature a person gains experience and insight into people’s behavior and understanding, awareness of existing reality. It happens because authors use and depict scenes from real life, applying philosophical, educative approach to analyzing the problems, revealed in their works. That is why it is very important to study world literature which has great educative value for growing generations of Uzbekistan. In this research we compared two books of famous writers of different country. “One of the aim of our independent republic is bringing up a healthy generation- healthy not only physically but mentally, with strong will educated brave and strong high moral principles” 1 . That is why there have been creating conditions for spiritual development of the citizens of Uzbekistan, maintaining heritance of our ancestors and values. Recently in our country sensible changes were made indifferent in different spheres of social political, economic life and international relations. Thus our aim is to create all conditions to help them integrate to European society, motivate them to learn history and culture not only of our country but of European and other foreign countries. Under the guidance of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, special attention is paid to the formation of harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern thinking generation, able to take responsibility for the fate of the Homeland. task of education, the task of rising up a new generation who is capable of national renaissance will remain the prerogative of the state and constitute a priority. At present great importance is attached to the study and teaching of foreign languages. The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve system of foreign languages teaching” dated from 10 December 2012; the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013; The resolution No 4947 of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017 - 2021 years ” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution“. Aiming to implement the resolution, some special people in the government are working on preparing and approving new teaching plans and programs taking into account introduction of foreign language teaching from the initial classes of the public schools, ensuring its execution are being carried out. The subject of this qualification paper is American and Uzbek literatures. Literature is the inherent subject which should be taught almost in all schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. The contribution of Twain and Gafur Gulam to American and Uzbek literature is enormous and very significant. We can’t imagine American literature without Mark Twain and Uzbek literature without Gafur Gulam therefore, it is important to know more about them. The object of this qualification paper is the analysis of both writer’s works. We will be able to know more about their styles in writing popular novels. The novelty of this present work representing the most important information about these two writers which take all aspects: their life, the attitude of their novels. This source of information is brief, clear and contains the most important information about Mark Twain and Gafur Gulam 4

which will be comprehensive for all tearns, especially students, who are interested in Uzbek and American literature. The hypothesis of the work is that this qualification paper provides the readers development of their skills for penetrating into the deep essence of a literature work, for finding objective reasons in the text of its ideal logical, asthetic, educational and emotional impact on and for extracting entire information that deposited in it. The aim of this qualification paper is to analyze American and Uzbek literature and the great Uzbek writer Gafur Gulam’s and American writer Mark Twain’s works. “Mischievous person” and “Tom Sawyer” are unforgettable, interesting works. They are worth of reading. The aim of the work directs us to carry out the following tasks in the paper. - to give information about the Uzbek and American literature and their periods - to show about the literature career of an American writer Mark Twain and Uzbek writer Gafur Gulam. -to discuss about their works “Mischievous person” and “Tom Sawyer” -to analyse the problem of children in those works. The theoretical importance of the work is that the theories given in the paper can be useful for having lectures on American literature and Uzbek literature or it can be as a handbook for making reports for literature. The practical importance of the work can be seen in the wide usage of these information in seminars on literature or stylistics. Moreover it would be great assistance to have new and fresh examples on American Literature for students to write independent works on comparing American and Uzbek literature. 5

In this work there were used the following methods of linguistic analysis : word’s definitions analysis, contextual-situation and text analysis for revealing its significant place in the works of Gafur Gulam and Mark Twain. The structure of the work is as following: Introduction, main part with includes three chapters, conclusion and Bibliography. Introduction states the actuality, subject, object, novelty, working hypothesis, methods, theoretical and practical importance of the work. Moreover this part tells us brief test of the content of the work. Main part includes three chapters in itself. Chapter I entitled American and Uzbek literature and their impact to the world literature In the first paragraph we analyzed the Uzbek literature and its periods from the ancient period to modern one. In the second paragraph such kind of analyses were done with American literature from Enlightenment to Modernism in American literature. Chapter II entitled The creation of Mark Twain and Gafur Gulam. In the first paragraph of this chapter we stopped is about the creation of Gafur Gulam. Uzbek literature is very ancient literature. There are many writers and poets who left us interesting works from different genres. One of them is Gafur Gulam. His name stands among the writers of the 19 th century who worked after the 2 nd world war. He preserved people to peace and to love the motherland. We know his with the works as “You are not an orphan”, “Miscievios person” and “Netay”. The second paragraph is about the literature career of outstanding American writer Mark Twain. Mark Twain is a remarkable writer of American literature. His works were translated into many languages all over the world. In his works he toughed the problem of society, education of the 19 th century. 6

Chapter III entitled Mark Twain and Gafur Gulam’s contribution in the world literature The first paragraph is about the famous work of Gafur Gulam “Mischievous person” where we gave the plot of the novel. The problem of war is given in this book of Gafur Gulam. The life of poor families after the 2 nd War. In the second paragraph we analyzed the masterpiece of Mark Twain “Tom Sawyer”. Being very naughty the main character of the book spent difficult childhood.The author described the life of America after the 2 nd world war. Conclusion is about the result of the work. CHAPTER I UZBEK AND AMERICAN LITERATURE AND THEIR IMPACT TO THE WORLD LITERATURE 1. 1. Uzbek literature and its periods Uzbek literature , the body of written works produced by the Uzbek people of Central Asia , most of whom live in Uzbekistan, with smaller populations in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Although its roots stretch as far back as the 9th century, modern Uzbek literature traces its origins in large part to Chagatai literature , a body of works written in the Turkic literary language of Chagatai. The earliest works of Chagatai literature date from the 14th century but remain easily accessible to readers of the modern Uzbek language . Modern Uzbek has today assumed the role once held by Chagatai, which all but vanished by the early 20th century, of being the reference language for Turkic historical and literary works in Central Asia. Uzbek literature’s classical period lasted from the 9th to the second half of the 19th century. During that period numerous literary works were produced, often under the patronage of Turkic emperors, kings, sultans, and emirs. The best-known patrons of the Turkic literature of the historical region known as Turkistan —which includes what is today Uzbekistan as well as a number of surrounding countries— include the Qarakhanids (10th–13th centuries); such Timurids (14th–16th centuries) as Timur (Tamerlane), Shahrukh, Ulūgh Beg , Ḥ usayn Bayqarah, and Bābur , the founder of the Mughal dynasty in India; and ʿUmar Khan, a 19th- century ruler of the khanate of Kokand. 2 From the 10th to the 12th century, Uzbek written literature migrated from a Turkic script to an Arabic one. This transition opened Uzbek writers to the influence of Arabic literature ; the result was that Uzbek literature underwent extensive changes as it adopted many of the forms and some of the language of Arabic poetry and prose. Kutudgu bilig (“Knowledge Which Leads to Happiness”; Eng. trans. The Wisdom of Royal Glory ), written in 1069–70; Mahmud Kashgari’s Diwan lughat al-Turk ( Compendium of the Turkic Dialects ), compiled in 1072–74; and Ahmad Yugnaki’s 12th-century Hibat al-haqaʾiq (“Gift to Truths”), a didactic poem. Among the other Central Asian poets who had a lasting influence on Uzbek literature is Ahmed Yesevi , a 12th-century religious poet who was a follower of the great Sufi leader Yūsuf Hamadhānī. Ahmed Yesevi’s poems—collected as Divan-i hikmet (“Book of Wisdom”)—constituted a new genre of Central Asian Turkic literature: a religious folk poetry. He used a popular vernacular that borrowed little Arabic and Persian and that featured a Turkic syllabic metre . The 13th and 14th centuries saw the emergence of works written in Chagatai, a tradition that had a strong influence on the literature later classified as Uzbek. Among the poets of this period, those whose works have been preserved to modern times and remain popular today are Khwārizmī, best known for his Muhabbatnamah (“Love Letters”); Qu ṭ b Khorazmī, who in 1340 translated Ne ẓ āmī ’s romantic epic Khosrow o-Shīrīn (“Khosrow and Shīrīn”); and Durbek, best known for his Yusuf o-Zulaykha (“Yusuf and Zulaykha”). In the second half of the 14th century and in the first half of the 15th, the regions of Transoxania and Khorāsān —especially the cities Samarkand and Herāt —became centres of a cultural renaissance in Central Asia. Under the Timurids, literature, written in Chagatai, underwent intensive development. Many poetic genres flourished, including the lyric , the elegy , and the romantic destān (an oral epic poem). Many works in prose, especially historical works, were also produced. Of the many outstanding poets of this period, Lu ṭ fī was the great master of the ghazal (lyric love poem ) and tuyugh (a Turkic quatrain, similar to the robāī ), and he exerted a wide influence on poets of his time. In his sole narrative poem, Gul wa Nawruz (written in 1411; “Gul and Nawruz”), he extolled ideal love. Sakkākī, also among the period’s prominent poets, is best known for his divan (collection of poems), which contains munajaat (hymns), ghazal s, and qasida s (odes) devoted to Ulūgh Beg. But it was Gadāī who was the most remarkable Uzbek poet of the 14th and 9

15th centuries. Although his divan has been preserved, very little of his life is known. Even the poet’s original name is unknown; Gadāī is derived from his use of Gadā (“Beggar”) as a tahallus (pen name) in his ghazal s. His divan consists of 229 ghazal s, 5 tuyugh s, 2 qasida s, and 1 mustazād (a poem in which every second hemistich, or half-line, is followed by a short metrical line that has some bearing on the sense of the first hemistich without altering its meaning). The most ancient samples of the Uzbek literature concern to poetic creativity, integral part of culture of the Uzbek people. The large place belongs to fairy tails such as about the animals, magical- fantastic themes and household stories. Among the latter latifa (jokes) genre is developed. The national imagination created a collective image of Nasriddin Afandi, the main hero and with character of Uzbek national jokes. The largest genre of the Uzbek folklore is dastan (poem). It was executed usually in support of musical tools. There are more than 300 dastans (100 plots_ were written dawn. The brightest samples are: the heroic epic of “Alpomish”, heroic epic-romantic of Gurogli (more than 40 plots) military epic “Yusuf and Akhmad” , “Tokhir and Zukhra” and others. The book version as a rule, was borrowed from classical products. “Farkhod and Shirin”, “Layli and Majnun”. Pre-Islamic culture is represented by insignification numbers of written monuments in Old Turkic languages: Penitential prayer of Manicheans (the 5 th century) and Orhun-yYenisey writings (7-12 th centuries) “Kutghu- Bilig” (“knowledge”, “giving happiness”) (1069) of Yusuf Bolosoghuny. “Khibatul Khakaik” (a souvenir of truth) by Akhmad Yugnakiy and especially, “Devoni Lughati Turk” (dictionary of the Turkic languages) (1072-74) by Makhmud Khashgary and are among the finest examples of Uzbek literature. Since the 14 th century the Uzbek literature developed intensively and rather diverse. The period saw the imergence of a secular 10

theme ( a love epic with Biblical-Quranic topic, “Yusuf and Zulaykho” by Durbek in 14-15- centuries). 3 Also the most blooming period of Uzbek literature came on the scene during the period of Amir Temur. Diverse forms of brilliant poetic works achieved the special popularity. Compositions by Fhorasmy were widely popular among the public. Amir Temur himself highly respected Yassavy for his geniality, and built a majestic monument on his grave. Special attention on the part of Amir Temur towards Literature and arts has become a fair tradition to the entire Temur dynasty. Uzbek literature of that period served a significant stage in its historical development. Humanitarian values and great ideas are still urgent in it and still preserved their value. One of the bright lyric poets of the 15 th century was Lutfy, who in his poens used to highlight an ideal love, poems by Atai and Sakkaky are also among brilliant examples. Certainly the special place belongs to works by Alisher Navoi. He combined his lyrics in four collections, including kasidas, gazel kitas, rubais and others. The cornerstone of his poetry is “Khamsa” ( “Five stories”). In the anthology “The Assambley of Scientists” Navoi briefly describe famous poets of the 15 th century. Also, in his many works he talked about theories of ethics and aesthetics. This treatise, namely “Weight of the sizes” served a significant development in Uzbek lyrics. In the 16 th century numerous literary and historical works as well as their translations into Uzbek language were produced. Historical events of the 16th century were told in “Shayboniynoma” (1506), as well as in the works by Zakhriddin Muhammad Bobur, who ia said to have led record through his life, which later had become a source for his 3 www.google.com.uzbek literature 11

autobiographical work, entitled “Boburnoma” a remarkable literary and historical essay. Later on, works by Turdi (Faroghy), Mashrab and other poets saw large popularity. The influence of folklore upon the written literature was legends served as basis for creation of large literary works. (poems Yusuf and Zulaykho by Nozim Khisrov , “Tokhir and Zukhra “ by Sayyodi, “Bakhrom and Gulandon” by Saykali and others) In the 18-19 centuries the Ferghana Vally, Khoresm and Bukhara became the laergest literary centers of the region. Poems by Nishaty Khorasmy came on the scene, influenced enormously by works of Navoi and Fuzuly. Nodira and Uvaysy wrote about traditional theme of love. In early 19 th century satirical pamphlets by Gulkhany, Makhmur and Agakhy were popular. Works by Munis, his historical “Heavenly garden of joy”, finished later by Agahy, the author of the vast “ Talisman of those in love” became a masterpiece of the Uzbek classic literature. There were progressive poets of the period such as Mukumy, Furkat, Avaz Otar, Zavkhy, Khamza Khakimzada Niyazy, Sadriddin Ainy and Anbar Otin. In 1915 Khamza set up a theatrical group and wrote on local themes. In early 20 th century new poets and writers emerged in Uzbek literature, such as A. Kodiy, A. Chulpon, A. Fitrat, Oybek, G. Gulom, A. Kakhkhor, Kh. Olimjon, Uygur, and K. Yashin. New genres like political satire, feuilleton and pamphlet came on the scene. In 1923 satirical magazine “Mushtum” began to be published. In 20 and 30s of the last century , the poetry prevailed in Uzbek literature. In 50-60s various stories and novels by authors such as I. Rakhim, Oybek, Shukhrat, S. Ahmad came on the scene. Oybek, Shukhrat, S. Akhmad came on the scene. Oybek, Abdulla Kakhkhor and Ibrohim Rakhm wrote about the countryside life. Also the historical theme saw its rise. However, spiritual shape of the contemporary person 12

remained as the main topic in literature. Among such works there are novels by P. Kodirov, A. Yokubov and Mirmukhsin. In early 60s, stories and memories were further developed. One could observe a delicate mastery in the diversity of genres in the poetry by Shukrullo, E. Vokhidov, T. Tula, A. Oripov , Zulfiya and others. Historic and biographic themes in the works by Uighun, Izzat Sulton and others occupy a significant place an the playwriting, as well. The Uzbek literature during the period of independence is not just another historical stage in the development of the national literature, but it is a display of the new art-aesthetic phenomenon , with its new creative features. It became independent of ruling communist regime and ceased to be a state literature. Respectively, the state stopped regarding for “services” and punishing for “disobedience”. Now the modern Uzbek literature cares of spiritual enrichment of each individual, and perfection of social structures and industrial attitudes are no longer main topic for anymore. It wishes to understand the person deeper- in all of its variety of interpersonal relations. 4 A person has become its main subject, but not a typical hero given some typical circumstances. The modern Uzbek Literature delivers itself of primitivism, becomes diverse, more courageous in the chaise of a form and style. However with freedom of creativity and plurality of opinions, there is a danger of dull works to come on the scene. The Uzbek poetry, continuing a centuries-long tradition, remains as the leading genre of the national literature. The attitude and poetic realization of the world saw a new stage in the poems by Omon Matchon, Barat Boykobulov, Sirojiddin Sayyid, Normurod Narzullayev, Shavkat Rakhmon, Chulpon, Ergash , Azim Suyun, Usmon Azim, Ikrom Otamurod, Abduvali Kutbiddin, Aziz Said, Bakhrom Ruzimuhammad, Muhammad Yusuf, Iqbol Mirzo and 4 www.google.uz.uzbekliterature 13

others. Contemporary poetry pays a great deal of attention towards not only circumstances and enthusiasm, but also reflection of comlex spiritual state and stritive for realization of the sacred feelings of an individual, study of his rich and diverse soul. “Ancestors” (“Turkiylar”), “Acknowledgement” (“Iqror”) by Sh. Rahmon, “Confession” (“Istighfor”), “The white and black”, by Azim Suyun. “Non-explanatory dictionary” (Izohsiz lug’at) by Abduvali Kutbiddin, “Dream” (“Tush”), “Way” by A. Said are typical examples of the modern poetry. For this period variety of the forms and styles and wish to combine leading traditions of poetry of the East and West are common. One of the main features is a return of poetry to its initial roots, communicating sincere feelings and modern secrets of soul. It become the elite genre oriented to people with a refined spirit and advanced imagination. Even though, sometimes it leads to decrease in number of readers, however it advances the aesthetic level of poetry lovers, as well as degree of understanding the art. While the young generation with new names prevails in contemporary poetry, then in the prose one could observe a continuation of traditions. Today writers of different generations, such as Odil Yokubov, Said Akhmad, Shukur Kholmirzayev, Utkir Khoshimov, Oman Matchon, Tokhir Malik, Murod Mukhammad Do’st, Toghai Murod, Erkin Azamov, Khairiddin Sultonov, Khurshid Dustmuhammad and others. Successfully work in the given genre. Creative an unexpected decisions in the sphere, obvious violations of certain rules are those main features of Uzbek modern prose of that period. In the novel by Omon Mukhtor “The many faced” (“Ming bir qiyofa”) and surprisingly unordinary story by Nazar Eshankul “The black book” some of the features of the world prose were skillfully used. others are new aesthetic phenomenon in the national literature. The prose writer Sh. Kholmirzayev skillfully employed a traditional style of the story-telling by creating a live image of the contemporary person in his novels, such as “Scarecrow” (“Olabuji”) , “Dinosaur” “Moon under a could”, “Freedom” and “Navruz”, N. Norkobilov followed the same route in his works: “White collar”, “Rocks cry too”, “A highlander”, “Honor”, “A joyful day”. The traditional style and innovation of the world literature is successfully combined in stories: “Old Soviet people”, “A plan tree” by Sh. Bugayev, “Armchair”, Ibn Mughannu” by Kh. Dustmuhammad and the novel , “Fields of y father” by Togay Murod. The modern prose pays special attention to the spiritual world of the person and reflection of individual qualities in various aspects. New literary heroes now a part of the national literature: Bayna Momo, Ulton Gulsara, Tavakkal, Khusan Palvan, Zukhrs, Elnazar Palvon, Usar Kuklam. The urgent problems were touched upon in modern plays such as: “Iron Lady”, by Sh. Boshbekov, “Gloomy nights”, “Next door away” by U. Azim, “Reprisal” by U. Khoshimov, “Ruler” by A. Oripov, “Victorious ruler” , “Secrets of the castle” by A. Yokubov, “Old matchmakers” by Kh. Sharipov, “The first wedding cover”, by E. Khushvaqtov and others. Uzbekistan’s literature suffered great damage during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s; during that period, nearly every talented writer in the republic was purged and executed as an enemy of the people. Prior to the purges, Uzbekistan had a generation of writers who produced a rich and diverse literature, with some using Western genres to deal with important issues of the time. With the death of that generation, Uzbek literature entered a period of decline in which the surviving writers were forced to mouth the party line and writer according to the famous formulas of socialism realism. Uzbek writers were able to break out of this strait jacket only in the early 1980s. In the period perestroika and glasnost a group of Uzbek 15

writers led the way in Establishing the Birlik movement, which countered some of the Soviet government in Uzbekistan. Beginning in the 1980s, the works of these writers criticized the central government and other establishment groups for the ills of society. A critical issue for these writers was the preservation and purification of the Uzbek language. To teach that goal, they minimized the use of Russian lexicon in their works, and they advocated the declaration of Uzbek as the state language of Uzbekistan. These efforts were rewarded in 1992, when the new national constitution declared the Uzbek language to be the state language of the newly independent state. At the same time, however, some of these writers found themselves at odds with the regime, because of their open criticism of post- soviet policies. Today more than a hundred countries have recognized the Republic of Uzbekistan, which has the longest history of any of the newly independent state of the former Soviet Union. It is a country with more than 120 ethnic groups. It is well known that czarist Russia, starting in the 1850s, occupied the territory of Turkistan, as a result of the agreement between the Russian and the Chinese and a policy of colonization and occupation, West Turkistan became subject to Russia and East Turkistan became subject to China. 5 Liteature of Temurid’s period Alisher Navoi. His real name is Nizomiddin Mir Alisher. He wrote his poems under the pen-name of Navoi (in his poems which were written in the old Uzbek language) and Foni ( in his poems which poems which were written in Persian language). Navoi is a great Uzbek poet, a representative of the Uzbek literature in the West. He was born in Heart and spent the main part of his life there. Navoi’s family was close to Timurid’s palace. Homdamir an old poet Lutfi met with Alisher Navoi when he was a child and Lutfi appreciated his talent. Zahiriddin Muhammad Bobur was born in 1483, February 14, in Andijan. He was the fifth generation of Amir Temur. In 1494 when Bobur was only 12 years old, he became a ruler. In 1503-1504 he conquered Afghanistan. During 1519-1525 he tried to conquer India five times. He became the founder of Bobur’s Empire. Which lasted more than there centuries (1526-1858). He died in 1530, December 26, in Agra. His grave was in Agra but then it was brought to Kabul. Literature of Jadid’s period Mahmudho’ja Behbudiy is one of the leaders of Jadidism action in Turkistan. Subsequently, his post was changed from “clerk” (mirza) to myfti. He was born in 1875 in Samarkand. Abdulla Avloni was born on July 12 th in 1878 in Mergancha neighbourhood of Tashkent. When he was 7 he studied in an old school. Akromhon domla taught him. In 1890 he began to study in the medrassah in Mergancha. Then mullah Omar Ohun taught him at Abdumalik boys madrasah. He was interested in literature. Sidqiy Hondayliqiy was a well-known poet, translator artist and callingrapher, author of the poems of new literary trend. He was born in the village Hondaliq of Tashkent region. In 1903 he came to Tashkent and studied in the madrasah “Beklarbegi”. His panname was also “Shavkat” and he edited works in two volumes called “Tuhfai Shavkat” (Tashkent 1913) and “Savghoti Shavkat” (Tashkent 1914). In some of his poems he used the penname “Shevan”, “Iskandariy” and later on he choosed the penname Sidqiy. Saidahmad Vasli Samarkandi was a writer of Samarkand literary trend. He was also a teacher and scholar. Vasli wrote textbooks in Uzbek, Arabic and Farsi. He also wrote his books in these languages. His well known books are “rmug’oni duson” in Farsi, “Devoni Turki” in 17

Uzbek, “Nazmus silsila” in Farsi, poems “Arab ud din” in Uzbek. In linguistics he wrote a book “Mukaddimai sarfi navhu Arabi ham namunai sarfu navhu Farsi”. Abdulhamid Cho’lpon is one of the founders of a new Uzbek poetry, translator, editor, play writer Cho’lpon was born in 1897 in Andijan. He took his first education in old school. Then he studied in Russian-tuzem school. In 1914 he came to Tashkent and began his activity in the newspaper “Sadoi Turkistan”. His compositions were edited also in newspapers and journals in Ufa, Kazan, Bogchasaroy. From 1916 he lived in Orenburg and worked as a secretary in one of the administrations of government. Then he returned Tashkent. Till 1920 he served in TrkRosTA. In 1920 he served in took part in meeting of Eastern people in Baku. Gafur Gulom was born in Tashkent in 1903. He took an education at an old Rus-tuzem schools, then he studied at teacher’s training course. He came to literature with his poem “Guzallik nimada”. He developed Uzbek poetry with new conception and methods by his collection of poems “Tirik qo’shiqlar” , “Dinamo”, “Sharkdan kelayotirman”, “Sarhisob”. Gafur Gulom opened bold glance in raising main problems of his time, deepening on human sense and in finding or original description in the history of Uzbek literature. His poems “Sen yetim emassan”, “Men yahudiy”, “Sog’inish”, “Bizning ko’chada ham bayram bo’lajak”, “Yigitlarga”, “Vaqt”, “Suv va nur”, “Kani meni yuldizim” were the great event in the Uzbek poetry and brought the glary of literature to the foreign countries. 18

1.2. American literature and its periods American Literature begins with the orally transmitted myths, legends, tales, and lyrics ( always songs) of Indian cultures there was no written literature among more than 500 written Indian languages and tribal cultures that existed in North America the first European arrived. As a result, native American oral literature is quite diverse. Narra lives from quasi-nomadic hunting cultures like the Navajo are different from stories of settled agricultural tribes such as the pueblo-divelling Acoma; the stories of Northern lakeside duelers such as the Ojibwa often differ radically from stories of desert tribes like the Hopi. 6 Tribes mountained their own religions workshipping gods, animals, plants, or sacred persons. System of governments ranged from democracies to councils of elders to theocracies. These tribal variations enter into the oral literature as well. Still, it is possible to make a few generalisations Indian stories, for example, glow with reverence for nature as a spiritual as well as physical mother. Nature is alive an endowed with spiritual forces; main characters may be animals or plants, often tolenis associated with a tribe, group, or individual. The closest to the Indian sense of holiness in later Amercan literature is Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Transcendental. “Over-Soul” which pervades all of life. The Mexican tribes revered Quetzalcoatal, a god of the Jottecs and Azetecs and some tales of a high god or culture were told elsewhere. However, there are no long standardized religious cycles about one supreme divinity. stories culture heroes such as the Ojibwa tribe’s Manabazho or the Navajo tribe’s loyalty. These tricksters are treated with varying degrees of respect. In one tale they may seem selfish or foolish. Also past authorities, such as the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung , have deprecated trickster tales as expressing the inferior , amoral side of the psyche, contemporary scholars some of them Native Americans point out that Odysseus and Prometheus, the revered Greek heroes are essentially tricksters as well. Examples of almost every oral genre can be found in American Indian literature: lyrics, chants, myths, fairy tales, humorous anecdotes, incantations, Riddles, proverbs epics and legendary histories. Accounts of migrations and ancestors abound, as do vision or healing songs and tricksters tales. Certain creation stories are particularly popular. In one well-known creation story told with variations among many tribes with variations among many tribes, a turtle holds up the world. In a Cheyenne version, the creator, Moheo has four chances to fashion the world from a watery inverse. He sends four water birds diving to try to bring up earth from the bottom. The snow goose, loon, and mallard soar high into the sky and sweep down in a dive but cannot reach bottom but the little coot, who cannot fly, succeeds in bringing up some mud in his bill. Yet with the emption of outstanding political writing, few works of note appeared during or soon after the Revolution. American books were harshly reviewed in England Americans were painfully aware of their excessive dependence on English literary models. The search for a native literature became a national obsession. As one American magazine editor wrote , around 1816, “Dependence is a state of degradation fraught with disgrace and to be dependent on a foreign mind for what we can ourselves produce is to add to the crime of indolence the weakness of stupidity” Cultural revolution, unlike military revolution, cannot be successfully imposed but must grow from the soil of shared experience. Revolutions expressions of the heart of the people they grow gradually out of new sensibilities and wealth of experience. It would take 50 years of accumulation history for America to earn its cultural independence and to produce the first great generation of American writers: Washington 7 . Irving, James Fenemore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Jhoreau, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hauthrone, Edgar Allen Po, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickenson. America’s literary independence was slowed by a lingering identification with England or classic literary models and difficult economic and political conditions that hampered publishing. Revolutionary writers, despite their genuine patriotism, were of necessity self-consious and they revolutionary generation could never find a roots in their American sensibilitres. Colonial writers of the revolutionary generation had been born English, had grown to maturity as English citizens and had cultivated English citizens, and had models of thought and English fashions in dress and behavior. Their parents and grandparents were English as were all their friends. 8 Added to this American awareness of literary fashion still lagged behind the English and this time lag interfiled American imitation. Fifty years after their frame in England, English neoclassic writers such as Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, Oliver goldsmith and Samuel Johnson were still eagerly imitated in America. Moreover, the heady Challenges of building a new nation attracted talented and educated people to politics, low and diplomacy. These per suits brought honor, glory and financial security. Narrating on the hand did not pay. Early American writers now separated from England, effectively had no modern publishers, no audience and no adequate legal protection. Editorial assistance, distribution and publicity were rudimentary. Untill 1825, most American authors paid printers to publish their work. writing. The exception, Benjamin Franklin though from a poor family was a printer by trade and could publish his own work. The lack of an audience was another problem. The small cultivated audience in America wanted well know. European authors, partly out of the exaggerated respect with which former colonies regarded their previous. If we go to the past history of America in the second half of the nineteenth century , the fertile, mineral-rich American continent West of the Appachians and Alleghenies was peopled and exploited. Between, the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the first world war, the country was wholly transformed, Before the Civil war America had been essentially a rural agrarian, isolated republic whose idealistic, confident and self-reliant inhabitants for the most part believed in God; by the time the United States entered World War I as a world power, it was an industrialized, urbanized continental nation whose people had been forced to come to terms with the implications of Darwin’s theory of evolution as well as with profound changes in its own social institution and cultural values. The central material fact of the period was industrialization, on a scale unprecedented in the earlier experiences of England an Europe. Between 1850 and 1880 capital invested in manufacturing industries more than quadrupled, while factory employment nearly doubled. By 1885 four traneontinontal rail read lines were completed, using in their own construction an carrying to manufacturing centers in Pitsburg , Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago the nation’s quintupled output of steel. This extensive railway car in turn made possible such economic developments as the centralization of the meat packing industry in Chicago Control over this enterprise as well as other industries passed to fever and large companies as time went on. In the two decades following the 1870s a very small number of men controlled without significant competition the enormously profitable steel, railroad, oil, and meat packing industries . 23

The group of men, known variously as buccaneers, captains of industry self- made men, or robber barons included Jay Could, Jim Hill, Leland Stanford, Jim Fisk, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller. However different in temperament and public behavior all of these men successfully squeezed out their competitors and accumulated vast wealth and power. All were good examples of what the English novelist D.H Lawrence described as the lone hand and the huge success. These were the men who served as examples of Mark Twain’s ‘Colonel Berian Sellers” a character who in turn epitomizes much of the spirit of acquisitiveness excoriated by Twain in the Gilded age, 1873 (a novel written in collaboration with Charles Dudley Warner) During the half century, when the literature discussed in this section was written, the United states went through some of the greatest changes in its history. In the muddle of 19 th century it was still mainly a country of farmers trade and manufacturing were growing more important with each decade but it was not until the 1870s that a majority of Americans were making a living in non-forming occupations. Meanwhile in 1850 to 76 million in 1900 the population cared from century Negro slovery was still a fact of American life. The nation was being split into by it. The South defended slavery more and more vigorously the North Criticized it more and more earnestly. The bitter war waged between the North and South from 1861 to 1865 permanently attired the Character of American life. For many people - the great poet Walt Whitman for one it was the central fact of their lives. For the South it meant the lingering flower of defeat; for the negroes it meant freedom enjoyed by the whites. After the Civil war the nation entered a period of vast commercial expansion. Railroads stretched from one end of the country to the other. Factories were built. Cities grew bigger. Fortunes were made. 24

Throughout history men have expressed their dissatisfaction with their present condition through the written and spoken world. The thinkers in a society writers among them, are the persons most likely to examine prevailing values and to distern flaws in the social structure before these flows have been recognized by society as a whole . This examination of values was as prevalent in the 19 th century as it is in the 20 th . Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau for example both died that making money was as important as many Americans believed. During the late 19th century, and into the 20th century artists and musicians contributed to the idea of realism in the American setting. Each, though slightly different in concept or subject, was defining what was going on in front of his or her eyes, without imagining a past or a future. While it has been stated that American Realism was a neoclassical movement borrowing from ancient classical interpretations of art and architecture, this statement is false. American Realism was actually the opposite; instead of reflecting back to antiquities, artists, writers and musicians were concerned with recording the grit and the true reality of the early 20th century in America. From the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, the United States experienced enormous industrial, economic, social and cultural change. A continuous wave of European immigration and the rising potential for international trade brought 25

increasing growth and prosperity to America. Through art and artistic expression (through all mediums including painting, literature and music), American Realism attempted to portray the exhaustion and cultural exuberance of the figurative American landscape and the life of ordinary Americans at home. Artists used the feelings, textures and sounds of the city to influence the color, texture and look of their creative projects. Musicians noticed the quick and fast paced nature of the early 20th century and responded with a fresh and new tempo. Writers and authors told a new story about Americans; boys and girls real Americans could have grown up with. Pulling away from fantasy and focusing on the now, American Realism presented a new gateway and a breakthrough — introducing modernism, and what it means to be in the present. American Realism in literature was a late nineteenth-century movement that began as a reaction against romanticism and the sentimental tradition associated primarily with women writers. Chief among the authors writing in this genre were William Dean Howells, Henry James, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Jack London, Kate Chopin, and Stephen Crane. Although the realist aesthetic influenced European as well as American literature, the American tradition emerged somewhat later in the century and employed slightly different conventions than its continental counterpart. American Realism was most commonly a feature of narrative fiction, although authors occasionally applied its themes and literary techniques to poetry and drama as well. Further, the critical debate surrounding the proper definition and literary validity of realism spawned a considerable number of essays—often by the same authors who were writing realistic novels and short stories—in the literary journals of the day. To many writers and critics of the late nineteenth century, realism was synonymous with the works of the French novelist Emile Zola, whose works emphasized sexuality, immorality, and the lives of the lower classes. America, still under the influence of Puritanism, resisted such themes as inappropriate for literature and continued to cling to the optimism and idealism associated with the Romantic Movement. The pessimism that followed European industrialism and the 26

population shift from country to city arrived in America more slowly, perhaps as late as the 1880s, although some scholars insist that the realist movement actually began shortly after the Civil War. Warner Berthoff (1965) has made a case for the former, claiming that “the great collective event in American letters during the 1880s and 1890s was the securing of ‘realism’ as the dominant standard of value.” Jane Benardete (1972) has chosen a slightly earlier date, claiming that realism “flourished in the last three decades of the nineteenth century,” and the majority of literary historians tend to agree with her. Closely associated with prairie realism was the local color literary movement, which emphasized specific, detailed descriptions of actual places and reproduced regional dialects in the characters' dialogue. Scholars have been divided on whether local color literature qualifies as part of the realist tradition given that it does not necessarily address contemporary social and ethical issues; nevertheless, many critics have included local color as a subset of realism based on its utilization of similar literary techniques. For his part, Berthoff has maintained that a major element of American Realism is “a haunting sense of loss, as at some irreversible falling away from a golden time,” and claims that local color literature is most especially associated with this loss. Josephine Donovan (1983) has argued that women's local color literature can be firmly situated within the anti-romantic tradition of women's realism, which sought to represent the actual conditions of women's lives, no matter how grim. Habegger, however, has claimed that while realism and local color “were born together and remained in close touch … the difference—local color's adherence to old times rather than the passing scene— cannot be too much emphasized.” Habegger insists that local color should be treated as a separate aesthetic since it fails to deal with contemporary realities. Commentators have generally maintained that William Dean Howells and Henry James were the foremost practitioners of American Realism, although many have included Mark Twain as part of the “great authorial triumvirate” of the realist movement, as Benardete has put it. An advocate for realism in his fictional works and as editor-in-chief of the Atlantic Monthly, Howells equated romanticism with 27

the Old World aristocracy and therefore considered realism to be the appropriate aesthetic for the emerging institution of American literature. Further, he believed that American Realism should concentrate on common life experiences which could instruct and inform readers rather than on the gross, immoral subject matter and pessimistic tone of European Realist literature. Howells's works include A Modern Instance (1882), The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). James was perhaps the most technically refined novelist and short story writer of the American Realist movement. He has been admired by many scholars as a true student of the craft, creating highly sophisticated narratives and inventing psychologically complex characters. For James, an artist did not need to gather information and employ factual events and situations to produce realistic literature; rather, an artist only needed to rely on the limitless imagination to recreate realistic characters, scenes, and circumstances. Some of James's most significant contributions to realism were The Portrait of a Lady (1881) and What Maisie Knew (1897). Twain had been widely regarded as the most celebrated late nineteenth- century American author to contribute to the realist movement. While some critics have taken exception to including Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) within the opus of American Realism, others have pointed out that this tour de force addresses many of the same nineteenth-century social and ethical issues as other realist writers but with less pessimism and more of Twain's trademark caustic humor and acerbic wit. 28

CHAPTER II. THE CREATION OF MARK TWAIN AND GAFUR GULAM 2 .1. The role of Gafur Gulam in Uzbek literature He has glory field with his talent in the Uzbek poetry. N. Tikhonov Gafur Gulam – the famous writer of Uzbekistan, was born on May, 10, 1903 in the family of peasants in Tashkent. His father was the competent person. He read products of the Uzbek and Tajik classical literature, knew Russian, itself wrote verses. In his house there were poets Muckymiy, Furkhat, Asiri, Hisalt and others. In the autumn of 1916 Gafur was to go to school. After the death of his mother ( father has died earlier ) he has been compelled to go to work. In 1923 Gafur Gulam has written a poem “Children of Pholix”, having displayed in the life-a life of the orphan, having told about children-orphans and in magazine “Ma’rifat va O’qituvchi” the second poem “In what beauty has been published. The description of external events, things, everything, that surrounds the small hero, serves the profound disclosing of human feelings. The poems of the poet: “Giant”, “Holiday of winners”, “Time”, “The woman” written within war are samples of high civil poetry. They were included in the collection’s “New verses”, “Fires of Uzbekistan”, “Mothers”, “Pride of Uzbek people”, “The song on a down”, “Long live the world!”, “It is your signature”. In the poems including in these collections. The poet aspired to answer the major questions a peace time, to show success of Uzbek people on a labor field. The hero of his poem – the farmer soldier borrowed with peace affairs and peace work. Gafur Gulam – the passionate fighter for the world, friendship and happiness of peoples. The poet has created a cycle of the verses devoted to the struggle for the peach of the world. Best of them: “From tribune of the World”, “Long live the world!”, “It is your signature” and others. Gafur Gulam’s creativity of the post – war period has played significant role in development of the Uzbek literature. If in military years in his poems we find deep experiences and thoughts of people with the weapon in hands protecting that has been created by them before war in his post – war lyrics with a poetic spontaneity and sincere agitation experiences of the 34

same people asserting the world on the grand sound. The post – war lyrics of the poet, this is logic continuation and development of his lyrics of military years and poems “Remember, the Native land waits for you!” And “The Holiday of winners”- as though a link of these two periods of creativity of the writer. Gafur Gulam is known for the talented translation into the Uzbek language of products of Pushkin, Lermantov, Ghriboyedova, Moyakovskiy, Nazim Hikmet, Rustaveli, Bottoms, Shakespeare, Dante. 2.2. Mark Twain is a true father of American literature Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American humorist, satirist, lecture and writer. He was one of the foremost American Philosophers of his day and was the world’s most famous humorist of any day. During the later years of his life he ranked not only as America’s chief man of letters, but likewise as his best known and best loved citizen. He became a friend to presidents, artists, leading industrialists and European royalty. 10 Samuel Langhorne Clemens is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel , Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel ." Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri in November 30, 1835. He was the sixth child of John Marshall Clemens, who gave him the name of Samuel- a family name and added Langhorne, after an old Virginia friend of his father . The child was puny and did not make a very study fight for life. Still he weathered along, season after season, only three of his siblings survived childhood: his brother Orion and Henry and his sister Pamela. years old, and his brother Benjamin died three years later. Another brother Pleasant died and the age of six month. Approximately four years after his birth, in 1839, the Clemens family moved to the small frontier town of Hannibal, Missouri. Agrowing port city that lie along the banks of the Mississippi. Missouri was a slave state in the Union. Sam’s father owned one slave and his uncle owned several. In fact, it was on his uncle’s farm that Sam spent many boyhood summers playing in the slave quarters, listening to tall tales and the slave spiritual that he would enjoy throughout his life. Later he described these themes in his writings. In Tom Sawyer we have a picture of the Hannibal of those days and the atmosphere of his boyhood there. At school to his own words, he “excelled only in spelling”. “When I was a boy there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was to be a steamboat men. 11 His schooling was brief and of a desultory kind. It ended when he was 12, his father died of pneumonia. Shortly there after he left school having completed the fifth grade, to work as a printer’s apprentice for a local newspaper. His job was to arrange the type for each of the newspaper stories, allowing Sam to read the news of the world while completing his work. After two short years, he joined his brother Orion’s newspaper as a printer and editorial assistant. He also started his career as a journalist by writing for the Hannibal Journal as a rule of local characters and conditions usually published in his brother’s absence; generally resulting in trouble on his return. Yet they made the paper sell and if Orion had realized his brother’s talent he might have turned it into capital even then. In 1853, when he was almost eighteen, Clemens grew tired of his limitations and pined of the wider horizon of the world. and Philadelphia where he worked on several different newspapers and found some success at writing articles. By 1857, he had returned home to embark on a new career as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. With the Outbreak of the Civil war in 1861, however , all traffic along the river came to a halt, as did Sam’s pilot career, His famous pen name Twain adopted from the call- “Mark Twain!”. It was a river term which means two fathoms or 12feet when the dept of water for a boat is being sounded. “Mark Twain means a safe depth for a riverboat.” Samuel Clemens was not the first to use the name “Mark Twain”. It originally belonged to an old, highly respected river pilot named Captain Isaiah Sellers. The old gentlemen was not of literary turn or capacity but he used to jot dawn brief paragraphs of plain, practical information about the river and sign them “Mark Twain” and gave them to the stage and condition of the river, and were accurate and valuable and thus far, they contained no poison. But in speaking of the stage of the river to day, at a given point, the captain was pretty apt to drop in a little remark about his being the first time he had seen the water so sign or so law at that particular point for forty-nine years; and now and then he would mention Island so and so and follow it, in parentheses, with some such observation as “disappeared in 1807, if I remember rightly”. In these unique interjections lay poison and bitterness for the other old pilots and they used to chaff the “Mark Twain” paragraph with unsparing mockery. It so chanced that one of these paragraphs became the text for my first newspaper article. I burlesqued it broadly very broadly, stringing my fantastic out to extent of eight hundred or a thousand words. I was a “cub” at the time. I showed my performance to some pilots and they eagerly rushed it into print in the “New Orleans True Delta”. It was a great pity, for it did nobody any worthy service, and it sent a pang deep 37

into a good man’s heart. There was no malice in my rubbish; but it laughed at a man to whom such a thing was new and strange and dreadful. I did know then, though I do now, that there is no suffering comparable with that a private person fells when he is for the first time pilloried in print. Captain Sellers did me the honor to profoundly detest me from that day forth. When I say he did me the honor, to profoundly, I am not using empty words. It was a very real honor to be in thoughts of so great a man as captain Sellers and I had wit enough to appreciate it and be proud it. It was distinction to be loved by such a man; but it was a much better greater distinction to be hated by him because he loved scores of people but he didn’t sit up nights to hate anybody but me”.1. “I liked the name and stole it” –once Clemens confessed to professor Wm. L. Phelps, “I think I have done him no wrong, for I seem to have made this name somewhat generally known.” In 1862 Twain served briefly as a confederate irregular. The Civil War put an end to the steamboat traffic and during a period when Twain was out of work, he lived in a primitive cabin on Jackass Hill and tried his luck as a gold-miner. “I would have been more or less than human if I had not gone mad like the rest” he confessed. Twain moved to Virginia City, where he edited two years Territorial Enterprise. On February 3, 1863, “Mark Twain” was born when he signed a humorous travel account with-that pseudonym. In 1864 Twain left for California, where worked in San Francisco as a reporter. After hearing a story about a frog told by Ben Coon, Twain made entry in his notebook: “Coleman with his jumping frog-bet a stranger 50$- Stranger had no frog and Coleman got him one:-In the meantime stranger filled Coleman’s frog full of short and he couldn’t jump. The stranger’s frog won”. From these lines he developed “Jim Smiley and his jumping frog/” which was published in the Saturday Press of New York on the 18 th of 38

November in 1865. It reprinted all over the country and became the foundation stone of the celebration jumping frog Calaveras country, and other sketches (1867). This work marked the beginning of Twain’s literary career. The name of “Mark Twain” became known as the author of that sketch and the two were permanently associated from the day of its publication. 12 Such fame as it brought did not yield heavy financial return. Its author continued to win a more or less precarious livelihood doing miscellaneous work. In 1866 Sam was hired by the Sacramento union to visit and report on the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii). His writings were so popular that, upon his return, he embarked upon his first lecture tour, which established him as a successful stage performer. On his return to San Francisco he contributed an article on the Hornet disaster to Harper’s Magazine and looked forward to its publication as a beginning of a real career. But alas when it appeared the printer and the proof-reader had somehow converted “Mark Twain” into “Mark Swain” and his dreams perished . Undecided as to his plans, he was one day advised by a friend to deliver a lecture. He was already known as an entertaining talker and his adviser judged his possibilities well. In “Roughing it” we find the story of that first lecture and its success. He followed it with other lectures up and dawn the coast. He had added one more profession to his intellectual stock in trade. It was about this time that the first great Mediterranean steamship excursion began to be exploited. No such ocean picnic had ever been planned before and it created a good deal of interest East and West. Mark Twain heard of it and wanted to go. He wrote to friends on the “Alta California” of San Francisco and the publishers of that paper had sufficient faith to advance the money for his passage on the understanding that he 12 Mark Twain “Old Times on the Mississippi” 1875. was to contribute frequent letters at twenty dollars apiece. It was a liberal offer as rates went in those days and a god send in the fullest sense of the world to Mark Twain. Hired by the Alta California to continue his travel writing from the east, Sam arrived in New York City in 1867. He quickly signed up for a steamship tour of Europe-France and Italy. He returned in August, 1868, with the manuscript of the “Innocents Abroad” and being manufactured, lectured throughout the East and Middle West, Making his headquarters in Hartford and in Elmira New York. His Experiences Twain later recorded in “The Innocents Abroad”. The work which gained min wide popularity pocked fun at both American and European prejudices and manners. It was also on this trip that Clemens met his future brother-in-law, Charles Langdon. Langdon reportedly showed Sam a picture of his sister Olivia and Sam fell in love at first sight. The success of “The Innocents Abroad” gave Twain enough financial security to marry Olivia Langdon in 1870, after writing about 189 love letters during his courtship. The book published in July 1869 and its success was immediate and abundant. On his wedding day on February 2, 1870, Clemens received a check from his publishers for more than four thousand dollars, royalty accumulated during the three months preceding. The sales soon amounted to more than fifty thousand copies and had increased to very nearly one hundred thousand at the end of the first three years. It was a book of travel, its lowest price three dollars and fifty cents. Even with our increased reading population no such sale is found for a book of that description today. And the “Innocents Abroad” holds its place still outsells every other book in its particular field. At 34 years of age , Clemens entered into the longest and faithful contact of his life; his marriage to Olivia Langdon Clemens. She was the daughter of a New York coal magnate a member of the country’s wealthy elite. For a poor boy from the West, who had seen the world from the 40

bottom up, this was such high society that he often felt like “Little Sammy in Fairy Land”. “I first saw her in the form of any ivory miniature in her brother’s stateroom on the steamer Quaker City on the Bay of Smyrna in summer of 1867, when she was in her twenty-second year. I saw her in the flesh for the first time in New York in the following December. She was slender and beautiful and girlish and she was both girl and woman. She remained both girl and woman to the last day of her life. Under a grave and gentle exterior burned inextinguishable fires of sympathy, energy, devotion, enthusiasm and absolutely limitless affection. She was always frail, whose hopefulness and courage were indestructible.”.1. But winning Lively meant for more than a status change for Clemens. She would be partner, editor and fellow traveler in success and failure for the next thirty five years. She would also furnish him her family’s home in Elmira, New York , a place where he visited often and wrote many of his best loved books. They settled in Buffalo, New York where Sam had become a partner, editor and writer for the daily newspaper the Buffalo Express. While living in Buffalo, their first child, Langdon Clemens was born. In a effort to be closer to his publisher, Sam and his family moved to, hear of Nook farm, a residential area that was home numerous writers, publishers and other prominent figures. Clemens meanwhile had sold out his interest in the Express, severed his connection with the Galaxy, a magazine for which he was doing a department each month and had written a second book for the American Publishing Company -“Roughing It”, published in 1872. The same year the Clemens first daughter Suzy was born, but their son Langdon died at the age of two from diphtheria. In August of the same year he made a trip to London to get material for a book on England but was too much sought after, too continuously feted to do any work. He went alone but in November returned with the purpose of taking Mrs. Clemens and the new 41

baby, Suzy to England the following spring. They returned to America in November and Clemens hurried back to London alone to deliver a notable series of lectures under the management of George Dolby formerly managing agent for Charles Dickens. For two month Mark Twain lectured steadily to London audiences, the big Hanover square rooms always filled. He returned to his family in January 1874. In 1873, Sam’s focus turned toward social criticism. He and Hartford Courant publisher Charles Dudley Warner co-wrote “The Gilded Age” a novel that attacked political corruption big business and the American obsession with getting rich that seemed to dominate the era. Meantime, a home was being built for them in Hartford a year after publication of “The Gilded Age”. The Clemens’s elaborate $40.000. The 19- room house on Farmington Avenue was completed . In the autumn of 1874 they took up residence in it. Happy residence continued through seventeen years well-night perfect years. 13 Their summers they spent in Elmira on Quarry farm- a beautiful hilltop the home of Mrs. Clemens sister. It was in Elmira that much of Mark Twain’s literary work was done. He had a special study there, some distance from the house, where he Roved to work out his fancies and put them into visible form. It was not so easy to work at Hartford; there was too much going on. The Clemens home was a sort of general headquarters for literary folk, near and far and for distinguished foreign visitors of every sort. Howells and Aldrich used it as their half-way station between Boston and New York and every foreign notable who visited America made a pilgrimage to Hartford to see Mark Twain. notes”. Kipling declared he had come all the way from India to see Mark Twain. “ I am an American. I was born and reared in Hartford, in the state of Connecticut anyway, just over the river, on the country. So I am a Yankee of the Yankees and particular; yes and nearly barren of sentiment, I suppose-or poetry, in other words”.1. Twain continued to lecture in the United States and England. Between 1876 and 1884. He published several masterpieces. “Tom Sawyer”, “The prince and the pauper”, “Life on the Mississippi”, “Huckleberry Finn” and “ A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” were among the volumes that had entertained the world and inspired it with admiration and love for their author. Tom Sawyer was originally intended for adults. Twain had abandoned the work in 1874, but returned to it in the following summer and even then was undecided if he were writing a book for adults or for young readers. Eventually he declared that it was “professedly and confessedly a boy’s and girl’s book.” “The prince and the pauper”(1881) was about Edward VI of England and a little pauper who changed places. The book was dedicated “to those good-mannered agreeable children Susie and Clara Clemens”, “Life of Mississippi”(1883) contained an attack on the influence of sir Walter Scott, whose romanticism have caused according to Twain “measureless harm” to progressive ideas. From the very beginning of his journalistic career, Twain made fun with the novel and its tradition. Although Twain enjoyed magnificent popularity as a novelist, he believed the he lacked the analytical sensibility necessary to the novelist’s art. In 1878-79 he had taken his family to Europe, where they spent their time in travelling over the Continent. It was during this period that he was joined by his intimate friend, the Rev. Joseph H. Twichell, of Hartford and the two made a journey, the story of which is told in “A tramp Abroad”. In 1891 the Harford house was again closed, the time indefinitely and the family, now five in number, took up 43

residence in Berlin. The typesetting machine and the unfortunate publishing venture were drawing heavily on the family Finances at this period and the cost of the Hartford establishment was too great to be maintained. During the next three years he was distracted by the financial struggle which ended in April, 1894 with the failure of Charles L. Webster and Co. Mark Twain now found himself bankrupt and nearly one hundred thousand dollars in dept. It had been a losing fight with this bitter ending always in view; yet during this period of hard, hopeless effort he had written a large portion of the book which of all his works will perhaps survive the longest his tender and beautiful story of “Joan of Arc”. All his life Joan had been his favorite character in the world’s history and during those trying months and years of the early nineties in Berlin, in Florence, in Paris, he was conceiving and putting his picture of that gentle girl-warrior into perfect literary form. It was published in Harper’s Magazine anonymously, because he said it would not have been received seriously had it appeared over his own name. The authorship was presently recognized. Exquisitely, reverently as the story was told, it had in it the, touch of quaint and gentle humor which could only have been given to it by Mark Twain. It was only now and then that Mark Twain lectured during those years. He had made a reading tour with George Washington. Cable during winter of 1884-85, but he abominated the platform and often bowed he would never appear before an audience again. Yet in 1895, when he was sixty years old, he decided to rebuild his fortunes by making a reading tour around the world. It was not required of him to pay his debts in full. The creditors were willing to accept fifty percent of the liabilities and had agreed to a settlement on that basis. But this not satisfy Mrs. Clemens and it did not satisfy him. They decided to pay dollar for dollar. They sailed for America and in July, 1895, set out from Elmira on the long trail across land and sea. Mrs. Clemens and Clara Clemens joined this pilgrimage, Suzy 44

and Jean Clemens remaining at Elmira with their aunt. Looking out of the car windows, the travelers saw Suzy waving them an adieu. It was a picture they would long remember. The reading tour was one of triumph. High prices and crowded houses prevailed everywhere. The author – reader visited Australia, New Zealand, India, Ceylon, South Africa arriving in England, at last with the money and material which would pay off the heavy burden of debt and make him once more free before the world. And in That hour of triumph came the heavy blow. Suzy Clemens never very strong, had been struck down. The first cable announced her illness. The mother and Clara sailed at once. Before they were half way across the ocean a second cable announced that Suzy was died. The father had to meet and endine the heart – break alone; he could not reach America, in time for the burial. He remained in England and was joined there by the sorrowing family. They passed that winter in London, where he worked at the story of his travels. Following the Equator the proofs of which he read the next summer in Switzerland. The returns from it and from his reading venture wiped away Mark Twain’s indebtedness and made him free. He would go back to America; as he said able to look any man in the face again. Yet he did not immediately. He could live more economically abroad and economy was still necessary. The family spent two winters in Vienna, and their apartment there constituted a veritable court where the world’s notables gathered. Another winter in England followed and then in the letter part of 1900, they went home-that is; to America. Mrs. Clemens never could bring herself to return to Hartford and never saw their home there again. When they returned to America Mrs. Clemens health failed and in the autumn of 1903 the family went to Florence for her benefit. There on the 5 th of June 1904 she died. They brought her back and laid her beside Suzy at Elmira. That winter the family moved to New York and 45

lived there, until 1908, when he moved into his last house, which he built in Redding and called it “Storm field”. His work did not cease when the pressing need of money came to an end. He was full of ideas and likely to begin a new article or story at any time. He wrote and published a number of notable sketches, articles, stories even books, during these later years, among them that marvelous short story “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg”. In that story , as in most of his later work, he proved to the world that he was much more than a humorist that he was, in fact a great teacher, moralist, philosopher, the greatest, perhaps, of his age. In 1909, his middle daughter Clara was married. In the same year Jean, the youngest daughter died from an epileptic seizure. It was on the day before a Christmas, 1909, that heavy bereavement once more came into the life of Mark Twain. As he approached the end of his life, Clemens grew more lonely and melancholic. He took on a dozen or so surrogate grandchildren. He Traveled to Bermuda for health and relaxation. He played billiards with friends. His own end followed by a few month that of his daughter. There were already indications that his heart was seriously affected and soon after Jean’s death he sought the warm climate of Bermuda. But his malady made rapid progress and in April he returned to Stormfield. He died there just a week later, April 21, 1910. When he died, newspapers around the country declared. “The whole world is mouring”. By then Sam Clemens had long since ceased to be a private citizen. He had become Mark Twain a proud possession of the American nation. Mark Twain passed away, but has a following today. “Now he is gone and our thoughts of him are tender, grateful, proud. We are glad of his friendship; glad that he expressed so richly one of the great elements in the temperament of America glad that he has left such an honorable as a man of letters and glad also for his own sake that after many deep sorrows he is at piece and we trust, happy in the fuller light. 46

Twain , robust , big-hearted, gifted with the divine power of use words, makes us all laugh together, builds true romances with prolirve fire and Western clay and shows us that we are at one on all the main points, we fell that he has been appointed by Providence to see it that the precious ordinary self of the Republic shall suffer no harm.”.1. His childhood home is open to the public as a museum in Hannibal and Calaveras Country in California holds the Calaveras Country Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee every third weekend in May. Walking tours are given in New York City of places Twain visited near his birthday every year. CHAPTER III. MARK TWAIN’S AND GAFUR GULAM’S CONTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD LITERATURE 3.1. “Mischievous person” – really immortal novel of Gafur Gulam Every country has its history, its own great writers and books who can live eternally. In our country it is unconditional really immortal product of the national writer of Uzbekistan Gafur Gulam ‘s “Shum bola”- “Mischievous person”. It created almost seven decades ago, became the reference book for millions of Uzbek people. 47

This poetical touching story about n a life of people in the beginning of XX century, difficulties of that time, the alive, precisely written out images of main heroes and especially the boy whom for cheerful nature and irrepressible energy have nicknamed simply and clearly “Shum bola” can leave nobody indifferent. Till now this book many times was republished not only in Uzbekistan, but also in many other countries. The initiator of the new edition in Russian known for a lot the most interesting projects, among which art – gallery “Caravan”, the same restaurant and a beside of others. The high estimation to the book was given by participants of press conference in “Caravan” on which there came also many members of family Gafur Gulam. And then two evenings here there passed presentation of the well-known book. It participants were expected with cheerful action – fragments from performance of Youth Theatre of Uzbekistan, viewing of the known film which has been removed by director Damir Salimov and also an opportunity to get the book which one of the best today has illustrated the Uzbek artist Bobur Ismailov. In opinion to the producer of project Timur Musin, the reference to it now it is caused by aspiration of “Caravan – groups” to give due G. Gulam’s creativity to promote the further development of our culture, art, to acquaint young generation with pearls of the Uzbek literature. For this purpose it is planned to carry out and a member of other projects. T. Musin is firmly convinced, that this and other best books of the country, should become property of millions. Several years ago Gafur Gulam’s century was celebrated and art – gallery “Caravan” has decided to republish this book with illustrations remarkable young and very much gifted artist Babur Ismailov. Gafur Gulam’s family and the son of writer Hondamir aka, have helped to make this book together with publishing house “Cho’lpon”. “Shum bola” we found from affair in very small format so that the book was beside that it was convenient for putting in a handbag. It is made that young 48

federation of Uzbek people those who is not familiar with Gafur Gulam’s creativity could read this product. Images of this book always with us, they are really immortal. We have carried out this interesting project together with Youth theatre. Under our invitation the art director of Youth theatre of Uzbekistan, remarkable actor Abduraim Abduvoxobov . The touch of fine themes seems to us, that, minutes which are given with this book, remarkable performance, beautifully put film on this product, all speaks about greatness of Gafur Gulam, probably, therefore there is a desire to touch more and more time to this talented product. With our purpose was to involve young generation that all today who is such Gafur Gulam. Because basically now the senior generation knows this book, but in fact it can be interesting to all. It is very pleasant for us that all visitors of “Caravan” with pleasure look performance as some series of evenings are carried out. By the way, we were very much frequently have foreign visitors and know it is clear, even without translation all that occurs on a stage , at cinema. The book and its illustrations, it is a good gift and young Uzbek and to all of us. “I can speak about this book hours, this is my favorite novel. I even would tell, that Gafur Gulam’s story – the original textbook of a life, there are supervision of very clever , talented person what was this graet Uzbek writer. When I have played a leading role in film of Damir Salimov I was 13 years old. I am 42 and in 40 at theatre has played one more role on Gafur Gulam’s work. It in general is possible to tell, has opened to me during a life. Before I dreamed to become the actor , but this film become as though the base of my firm belief to election of an actor’s trade. After an output of film the popularity appeared at me, people began to learn me, even with name “Shum bola” (“Mischievous person”). And now I have read the book in Russian. It is superb issued, made out, and translation is perfectly made. I am very pleased with this edition. I reflect on this product very much and I am convinced, That it gives much for actors. 49

Give the God that and now there were such writers the actor reads and he would like to play and still to play!”. 14 “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” is a masterpiece of Mark Twain Twain's major publication was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , which drew on his youth in Hannibal. Tom Sawyer was modeled on Twain as a child, with traces of two schoolmates, John Briggs and Will Bowen. The book also introduced in a supporting role Huckleberry Finn, based on Twain's boyhood friend Tom Blankenship. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a popular 1876 novel about a young boy growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the town of "St Petersburg", inspired by Hannibal, Missouri , where Mark Twain grew up. In the story's introduction, Twain notes: "Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest of those boys were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from an individual—he is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew, and therefore belongs to the composite order of architecture." 15 The first publication of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was by Chatto and Windus , in England in June 1876 (it was listed as "ready" on June 10 and was reviewed on June 24 in the literary publication The Atheneum ), and in the U.S. by subscription only in December 1876. Twain and other U.S. authors used initial publication in England fairly often, since otherwise it was impossible to obtain a copyright in the British Commonwealth . In the case of Tom Sawyer , the delay between the London and U.S. editions extended much beyond what Twain envisioned, or desired. When the work did appear in the U.S., it was sold by subscription only. In this distribution method, book agents across the country took orders for the book prior to publication and then delivered the book when available. It was only with subsequent editions that the book became available in retail shops. In dictations for his autobiography, Twain claimed Tom Sawyer "must have been" his first book whose manuscript was typed on a typewriter. However, typewriter historian Darryl Rehr has concluded that Twain's first typed manuscript was Life on the Mississippi . 16 Concerned with Tom’s personal growth and quest for identity, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer incorporates several different genres. It resembles a bildungsroman, a novel that follows the development of a hero from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. The novel also resembles novels of the picaresque genre, in that Tom moves from one adventurous episode to another. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer also fits the genres of satire, frontier literature, folk narrative, and comedy. The novel appeared in England in June 1876 , and six months later in the United States. An adult is a narrator of the novel who views the adult world critically and looks back on the sentiments and pastimes of childhood in a somewhat idealized manner, with wit and also with nostalgia. The narrator narrates in the third person, with a special insight into the workings of the boyish heart and mind. The fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri (which resembles Twain’s hometown of Hannibal)is the setting place of the novel. Tom Sawyer is the protagonist. The major conflict of the novel is in Tom and Huck perceive their biggest struggle to be between themselves and Injun Joe, whose gold they want and whom 16 "The First Typewriter" . they believe is out to kill them. Conflict also exists between Tom and his imaginative world and the expectations and rules of adult society. Rising action is Tom and Huck’s witness of Dr. Robinson’s murder; the search for the boys’ bodies in the river when they escape to Jackson’s Island; Tom’s testimony at Muff Potter’s trial; Tom and Huck’s accidental sighting of Injun Joe at the haunted house; Tom and Becky’s entrapment in the cave The climax of the novel is Huck overhears Injun Joe’s plan to kill the Widow Douglas, and Tom encounters Injun Joe when he and Becky are stranded in the cave. Falling action is Huck gets help from the Welshman and drives Injun Joe away from the Widow Douglas; Tom avoids conflict with Injun Joe and navigates himself and Becky out of the cave; Judge Thatcher seals off the cave, causing Injun Joe to starve to death; Tom and Huck find Injun Joe’s treasure; Huck is adopted and civilized by the Widow Douglas. When he is frustrated by his fight with Becky, Tom declares his intention to become a pirate, foreshadowing his later excursion to Jackson’s Island; Tom’s great fear of Injun Joe foreshadows his later encounters with him; Tom’s obsession with the oath he and Huck have taken never to speak about Dr. Robinson’s murder foreshadows the fact that Tom will later break the oath and testify at Muff Potter’s trial. Most good stories start with a fundamental list of ingredients: the initial situation, conflict, complication, climax, suspense, denouement, and conclusion. Great writers sometimes shake up the recipe and add some spice. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer doesn't have a standard narrative structure. There are a number of different plots – you might call them "adventures" – some of them intersecting with and others entirely independent from the rest. What might make more sense is taking one of the plots from the book, let's say the cave sequence, and treating it as an independent storyline. 52

Initial Situation.Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher go on a picnic with their friends. After lunch, the boys and girls head into some nearby caves and go exploring. Conflict .Tom and Becky manage to get separated from the group. They get lost in an unexplored area of the sprawling caves. Soon they're tired and are close to running out of the candles, which they need to see. Complication. Before the picnic, Becky told her mother that she was spending the night at a friend's house; Tom has told his aunt the same thing. As such, no one realizes that the two are missing until around noon the next day. Climax. While looking for a way out of the cave, Tom sees someone holding a candle coming around the corner. He shouts for joy, only to realize that his would- be rescuer is in fact Injun Joe, a vicious murderer who already has a bone to pick with Tom. Luckily, Tom manages to avoid being seen and return to Becky. Suspense. Even after he escapes from Injun Joe, Tom still needs to get out of the cave; it's sort of an "out of the frying pan and into the fire…then right back into the frying pan" situation. Denouement. After some more searching, Tom finds a small hole at the end of a dark passage. He and Becky escape from the caves and make their way back to town. After recovering a little, Tom heads over to see Becky; when Becky's dad, Judge Thatcher, tells him that the cave's entrance has been sealed, Tom reveals that Injun Joe is in the cave. Conclusion. The townspeople rush to the cave, where they find Injun Joe dead, his body sprawled on the ground behind the door; his attempts to dig his way out having failed. At this point, the "Tom and Becky in the Cave" story can be said to have ended, but this paves the way for the ending of the "Tom and Huck Search for Treasure" storyline. Thus one relatively tight sequence allows another to progress. Tom goes into the caves to have some fun, but he comes out of them with the information he needs to find the treasure. . 53

The problem of children in the book of Gafur Gulam “Mischievous person” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” of Mark Twain In his early years Gafur Gulamovich Gulamov a famous Uzbek author wrote a book called “Mischievous person”. In this book he raised the problem of “naughty” children. The word “naughty” in the following work will mean a person that never stops, who is full of energy and optimism. Here it is more a searching soul rather than just a disobedient child. This work of the Uzbek writer got coincided with another literary masterpiece of American literature “Tom Sawyer” of Mark Twain. Both authors touched on the same topic. These stories describing children with a generous inexhaustible famous writers to give a pure example of an ordinary child of the time. In Gafur Gulam’s “Mischievous person” the whole story begins with the description of the local “bazaar”. It is the best place for local boys to grow up, develop and get all the skills needed for future life. Here the same as in “Tom Sawyer” we can see situation of misunderstanding and confrontation of children with their parents. Parents though try to help and show the right way of living to their disobedient trusted child. They merely love their kids that is why sometimes it is just necessary to punish their beloved little ones to teach them responsibility, obeisance, honesty. In both stories boys do naughty things and cause problems to another people but they have not only the ability to cause problems, but also the ability to solve those problems and find the way ways out of them. The dream of being independent and living in a world of big deals is a strong feature of both Tom Sawyer and the narrator of “Mischievous person” ( the name is not mentioned anywhere in the book). They do think that they already prepared enough for the survival away from home, they try their best. They look here and there, they try different friends to be 54

with, different places to live , but: “East or West, home is best”, says a well-known English proverb. This is the way they learn, not by sitting at the desk at school, and listening to those who went through many things in life, to teachers, but instead of this they explore it on their own: by touching, smelling, putting on, working out, sometimes being beaten up, but it is the best way to explore the world for them. They go through many situations to become a real person. Those situations are not always the easy and funny ones. Sometimes, moreover boys get on the verge of dealing. They can be even killed for a stolen food or broken vase. In Gafur Gulam’s “Mischievous person” the narrator goes a little bit father in his unruliness. May be it is because he is little older than Tom or may be it is a little difference in nurture, he was up brought an a different culture, among people with different valuables in life and different opinion of things. A youngster in “Mischievous person” starts with guiltless taking an egg and grease without mother’s permission at home, but then he goes on to accidental mistreatment of birds in his uncle’s house, steps to cheating while helping to prepare the body of deceased for funeral. Goes further to blackmailing and fleecing money and food for keeping silence; misbehaving in priests house; lost of other people’s property, in the situation with sheep; playing cruelty with his best friend; while teaching him how to behave with a cow; a step rather for in its severeness – killing a cow to punish their master and to sell the meat; making an explosion and finally the best decision he made during several months of living independently – “going home, HOME” as he was talking to himself silently. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a renowned book written by Mark Twain in the 19th century. Tom Sawyer is a character who has lived on through the generations without losing his popularity. Millions today still enjoy The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. 55

The story takes place in Missouri in a small town nestled along the mighty Mississippi River . It is a wonderful tale of a young boy and his propensity to find trouble with a capital T. Tom Sawyer is a mischievous, yet kind-hearted, boy who lives with his Aunt Polly and brother Sid. Tom and Sid's mother had passed away and Aunt Polly stepped in to mother the boys, but she cannot bring herself to be strict with them, and Tom has an instinctual ability to exploit this factor whenever it suits him. Young Tom isn't a "bad" boy, but instead a thoughtful and sensible kid who happens to be a magnet for trouble. The plot of "Tom Sawyer" centers around Tom's knack for finding himself in the midst of many dilemmas which lead to adventure. He has an innate ability to read people and can easily utilize human nature to work to his advantage. Throughout the pages of "Tom Sawyer" you'll find Tom influencing others to perform his chores while he scurries off to his next adventure. If he's not being persuasive, he has a tendency to be manipulative such as convincing others to give him a favored toy or treat. Tom also has a keen way of managing to sway others under the guise of fun. There is many a time he convinces other boys to join him on journeys against their better judgment. Tom's quick ability to use reverse psychology to turn the proverbial tables on both his friends and nemesis works like a charm every time - almost. As Tom finds himself on top of situations, he often finds himself in hot water such as the time he traded all of the trinkets he manipulated from the other kids for tickets earned for memorizing Bible verses . In the end he has more tickets than everyone and wins the award in Sunday School. However when asked specific questions about the Bible he blurts out the wrong answer and embarrasses himself. Young Sawyer is very charismatic and he woos, and later wins the affection of Becky Thatcher. He accomplishes this by using superb "show-off" techniques that boys this age tend to use when wanting to impress a girl. It works smashingly 56

and the two hit it off. He is later spurned when Becky learns of a former relationship he had with another girl. After getting in trouble with Aunt Polly for something Sid did, Tom becomes upset and runs off with his pal Huckleberry Finn. The two boys later witness a murder and this is where the story really begins to take off because the real murderer puts the blame on an innocent man and Tom and Huck are the only ones who have witnessed what really happened. The murderer is a violent man and Tom and Huck know if they tell on the murderer he will extract revenge, and are too afraid to say anything about it, but they still feel guilty that a man is in jail wrongly accused. Tom has this deeply embedded in his subconscious but on the outside he is quickly back to his antics and fun-loving ways; but the murder weighs heavily on his mind. To get his mind off of the murder he puts together a band of pirates with his friends Joe Harper and Huck Finn. While out on an "adventure" on the river and an island, it seems somehow everyone in town thinks they've drowned. They use this misunderstanding to their benefit and decide to take off and be "real" pirates. For days they play on an island and then later to everyone's surprise show up at their own funerals. Aunt Polly is justifiably upset, but later forgives Tom when she finds an undelivered note in his pocket which had expressed for her not to worry. Eventually the trial begins for the murder and the murderer has not confessed but instead continues the charade that someone else committed it. Tom and Huck become more than a bit nervous and swear to keep mum about what they saw. Tom later is struck by conscience and tells the court what he saw; the murderer escapes and now Tom has to fear revenge. The rest of the book continues with many various adventures, but all the while the escaped murdered weighs heavily on Tom's mind. All of the preceding events lead to culminating adventures which include another attempted murder, a cave, missing persons and buried treasure. 57

Twain has an incredible ability to weave Tom's personal and leadership attributes into a story which makes it appealing to both children and adults. Once you pick this book up you'll be compelled to read it all the way through. Tom’s character might be summed up in the statement that he makes when Aunt Polly chastises him for lying to her and more important, letting her make a fool of herself in front of Mrs. Harper: “Auntie , I know that it was mean, but I didn’t mean to be mean. I didn’t Honest” His statement reflects the universal thoughtlessness and inconsideration that such youths have for the adult. Rather than detract from Tom’s total worth, it merely confirms that his actions are those of most early adolescents. And to Tom’s credit, he does acknowledge that his good joke now looks mean and shabby. During the nineteenth century it was a very common practice to use a paddle or some other instrument in order to whip children. Although boys were whipped frequently, young girls were virtually never whipped. Knowing this fact increase the horror of what Becky faces if it is revealed that she tore the anatomy book. Not only would it have been a horrible ordeal for Becky, who is basically sweet to be beaten, but it also would have been a disgrace for her family. Tom’s actions – accepting the blame for the torn page and taking the beating in Becky’s place- redeem his character and are best summarized by Becky’s simple statements “Tom, how COULD you be so noble.” The two incidents concerning the spilled ink on the spelling book and the torn page in the pressed anatomy book make a parallel contrast to the earlier scene in which Tom hurt his Aunt Polly: Tom is falsely accused of spilling ink on his spelling book and Becky could have easily saved him, but she remounts silent. I contrast, Tom could have let Becky take her deserved punishment for her. In this contrast, Tom is seen as more kind and less spiteful than Becky. Chapter XIX functions partly to make Tom aware of Becky’s actions. Feeling contrite for now badly he has treated his Aunt Polly, he is able to return too school and offer an apology to Becky for ignoring her And her picnic. 58

Chapter XX presents the further estrangement between Becky and Tom. By the end of Chapter XX however , everything is resolved between them and we are ready for the later cave scene where the two youths will be lost together. With the girls essays – filled with melancholy – Twain pokes fun at the tender sentimentality of the average person and the popular literature of the day. He is satirizing the average person’s preference for cheap, morbid writing that has no literary value. Instead of this melodramatic clap-trap, Twain would prefer a simple straightforward essay. This chapter also presents a realistic picture of the typical “country school and a delightful episode about the student’s reverence on the schoolteacher which involves the cat, Mrs. Dobbin’s wig, and finally his bald head painted gold by the sign painter’s boy. This scene serves as another example like the Sunday school scene in Chapter IX of Twain’s satirizing authority figures. As with chapter XXI the purpose of chapter XXII is not so much to move the story along, but to show the boredom that pervades during vacation in a small town. Twain presents this boredom by showing the boy’s trying one type of amusement and than quickly changing to another type. The significance of both these chapters is that Tom’s life any child’s life, in fact can be common and boring. During the summer month, so anxiously awaited the boys feel an isolation and loneliness that they do not necessarily feel during the rest of the year. In other words, tedium is worse than school. Making matters worse for Tom, Becky is always on vacation, thus he struggles to find things to do. For this reason and because he is attracted to their fancy uniforms - Tom joins the cadets of temperance. He soon drops it, however and picks up something else to occupy him for a time. The irony is that Tom wants to wear the showy uniform: however the cadets are only wearing uniforms because judge is dying. When the judge doesn’t die, there is no need for wearing the uniform and thus, Tom quits. 59

In many of his writings , Twain pokes fun at organized religion and he takes the opportunity to do so again here. With Tom and his friends, Twain points. After Tom Sawyer, from the middle of 1870s to 1880s,Mark Twain wrote a lot of works which later became his masterpieces. This period is a climax of Mark Twain's writing life. For example, the famous novel "the prince and pauper" which focus on the cruel law working for the ruler; "life on Mississippi" which praised working people emotionally and expressed his yearning for free life and the most important novel, his master work "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" are all produced in this period. Actually, these are closely related to the society situation at that time. From that time, class struggle became more and more intense. Worker's strike blossomed here and there. But most of them were suppressed cruelly. Many workers were sentenced to death with fabricate crimes. Both stories show how ordinary boys, who always lived with their parents under their care, learn how to be smart enough to survive without not even one coin in the pocket. On their life path, they learn to work, work hard, or if you don’t want to work – how to make other people work for you without forcing them. All the situations taught them to live with emptiness in their stomach, holes in their cloths. Bruises on their legs, calluses on their hands and most important thing, to live with dream in their heart. These two stories were written by authors of different cultures with the difference of being published on 40 years with the description of people from completely different countries, but all the same they show one thing: Naughty children are not bad children, naughty children are rather brave, smart, independently thinking little grown up persons. 60

Conclusion Our qualification paper is devoted to analyze the problem of children in the books of Gafur Gulam and mark Twain. The ancient periods of Uzbek literature include the Genres of latifa (jokes), the largest genres of the Uzbek folklore an dastan (poem) and heroic epic poem. “Alpomish”. Every centuries has its own masterpiece (“Shayboniynoma”, “Boburnoma”). 1. Heroic unforgettable epic – romantic poem “Gurugli”, “Tokhir and Zukhra”. The name of Alisher Navoi is famous all over the world. His work “Hamza” was translated into many languages. Uzbek she writers also developed Uzbek literature with their chistons (poem) “Anor” and many others. 2. The periods of American literature is different from Uzbek literature. Beginning with Enlightenment, myths, legends, tales American literature became one of the greatest literature, in the world. During the half century, when the literature discussed in this section was written The United States went through some of the greatest changes in its history . The cultural movements like Romanticism, Realism, Modernism were given in this research. 3. The role of the Uzbek writer Gafur Gulam is great in Uzbek literature. He left us many poems and novels. The theme many of works were about the second World War II and the problem of orphan children in that period. Russian writer Nikolay Tikhonov said about him: “He has glorified with his talent the Uzbek Poetry and affairs of Uzbek people”. 4. The literary career of the outstanding American writer as mark Twain. The greatest American writer Ernest Hemingway said: “All modern American literature begins with one book it is Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn”. 5. The book of Gafur Gulam “Naughty boy” became the reference book for millions of Uzbek people. This political touching story is about the life of people in the beginning of XX century, difficulties of that time, the alive , precisely written but images of main heroes and especially the boy whom for cheerful nature and irrepressible energy have nicknamed simply and clearly “Shum bola” can leave nobody indifferent. 6. The masterpiece of Mark Twain’s “Tom Sawyer is also about the naughty boy of realism, about his actions at school, in the church. Twain jokes fun at organized religion. 7. The problem of children in these two books is given describing the social situation . The main hero of “Naughty boy” is Karavay or nickname “Shum bola” a naughty boy who wanted to earn money and spent many difficulties in his life. Going around the country he came across with many problems. Being not independent he tried to solve those problems himself. Gafur Gulam described his main character very briefly and lively. It is the original text book of a life. During the second World War many children lost their parents and became orphan. A talented writer Gafur Gulam described these problems in his book “Naughty boy”. 8. Mark Twain’s “Tom Sawyer” is also an original book of American literature with the main character the writer criticized the orphan children, boring educational system of that period, difficult life of children in that time. Having written these research I got a lot of interesting facts about two writers of two nations. Both these books are unforgettable and worth of reading. 62

In this research we compared two books of famous writers of different country. The aim of this qualification paper is to analyze American and Uzbek literature and the great Uzbek writer Gafur Gulam’s and American writer Mark Twain’s works. “Mischievous person” and “Tom Sawyer” are unforgettable, interesting works. They are worth of reading. The subject of this qualification paper is American and Uzbek literatures. Literature is the inherent subject which should be taught almost in all schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. The contribution of Twain and Gafur Gulam to American and Uzbek literature is enormous and very significant. We can’t imagine American literature without Mark Twain and Uzbek literature without Gafur Gulam therefore, it is important to know more about them. The object of this qualification paper is the analysis of both writer’s works. We will be able to know more about their styles in writing popular novels. Main part includes three chapters in itself. Chapter I entitled American and Uzbek literature and their impact to the world literature In the first paragraph we analyzed the Uzbek literature and its periods from the ancient period to modern one. In the second paragraph such kind of analyses were done with American literature from Enlightenment to Modernism in American literature. Chapter II entitled The creation of Mark Twain and Gafur Gulam. In the first paragraph of this chapter we stopped is about the creation of Gafur Gulam. Uzbek literature is very ancient literature. There are many writers and poets who left us interesting works from different genres. One of them is Gafur Gulam. His name stands among the writers of the 19 th century who worked after the 2 nd world war. He preserved people to peace and to love the motherland. We know his with the works as “You are not an orphan”, “Miscievios person” and “Netay”. The second paragraph is about the literature career of outstanding American writer Mark Twain. Mark Twain is a remarkable writer of American literature. His works were translated into many languages all over the world. In his works he toughed the problem of society, education of the 19 th century. Chapter III entitle Mark Twain and Gafur Gulam’s contribution in the world literature The first paragraph is about the famous work of Gafur Gulam “Mischievous person” where we gave the plot of the novel. The problem of war is given in this book of Gafur Gulam. The life of poor families after the 2 nd War. In the second paragraph we analyzed the masterpiece of Mark Twain “Tom Sawyer”. Being very naughty the main character of the book spent difficult childhood.The author described the life of America after the 2 nd world war. Conclusion is about the result of the work. 67
