Introduction The forthcoming generation is support of any society and people .The flourishing of the country mostly depends on the intellect, knowledge, aspiration and enthusiasm of its young men and women. Since the early days of Uzbekistan’s independence, care about the harmonic development of the younger generation, its physical moral and spiritual upbringing has become one of the most important priorities of state policy. In 1997, upon the immediate leadership of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islom Karimov, The national program for Cadre Training was developed. Thanks to its implementation, the country has been maintain the permanent deepening and renewal of the general educational and professional training through the organic unity combined with historical and spiritual heritage of the people Reforms in the systems of education in Uzbekistan and the large- scale programs which are aimed at the happy future of our children, are now rendering their true results. On December 10, 2012 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”. 1 It is noted that in the framework of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Programme for Training in the country, a comprehensive foreign languages’ teaching system, aimed at creating harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern-thinking young generation, further integration of the country to the world community, has been created. During the years of independence, over 51.7 thousand teachers of foreign languages graduated from universities, English, German and French multimedia tutorials and textbooks for 5-9 grades of secondary schools, electronic resources for learning English in primary schools were created, more than 5000 1 “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system” Xalq so’zi December 10, 2012. 3

secondary schools, professional colleges and academic lyceums were equipped with language laboratories. However, analysis of the current system of organizing language learning shows that learning standards, curricula and textbooks do not fully meet the current requirements, particularly in the use of advanced in formation and media technologies. Education in mainly conducted in traditional methods. Further development of a continuum of foreign languages learning at all levels of education; improving skills of teachers and provision of modern teaching materials are required. According to the decree, starting from 2013/2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country will be taught from the first of schooling in the form of lesson-games and speaking games, continuing to learning the alphabet, reading and spelling in the second year (grade). Also it is envisaged that university modules, especially in technical and international areas, will be offered in English and other foreign languages at higher education institutions. Any language has its specific system. This is true for English as well. The sounds of English are not the same as the sounds of Russian, though there are, of course, some sounds which occur both in English and in Russian. Wrong pronunciation often leads to misunderstanding. For example, when a speakers or a reader replaces one phoneme with another he unintentionally uses quite a different word, in this way altering the unintentionally uses quite a different word. Every teacher must understand how important the teaching of correct pronounciation is. The first impact of any language comes from the spoken word. The basis of all languages is sound words are merely combinations of sounds. It in this sound sequences 4

that the ideas are contained. The listening is the first experience. The attept to understand accompanies it. The acquisition of good pronounciation depends to a great extent on the learners ability of listening with care and discrimination. Teaching English pronounciation in schools should be based on methodological principles. In teaching pronounciation there are at least two methodological problems the teacher faces: 1. To determine the cases where consious manipulation of the speech organs is required , and the cases where simple imitation can or must be used. 2. To decide on types of exercises and the techniques of using them. Teaching a foreign language begins with teaching students to hear and to speak it, that is, with the oral introductory course or the oral approach. The teacher’s task is to determine which sounds the students will find hard to pronounce, which sounds they can assimilate through imitation, and which sounds require explanations of the position of the organs of speech while producing them . Actuality of the theme . Lessing deals with her recurring themes of the collective pressures upon an individual, "madness" and the exploration of "Self." Although all of the same themes are present in her first novel The Grass is Singing , it is different since her protagonist does not even begin to fight collective pressures. Although Lessing wrote both The Summer Before the Dark and "To Room Nineteen" after embracing Sufic philosophy, only The Summer Before the Dark reflects her exploration of the dream lives of her protagonists, and their meeting of aspects of selves and archetypal images as they progress towards the attainment of a sense of an integrated and palimpsestic self. 5

The aim of the qualification paper . In my thesis I would like to deal with psychological and social aspects of female protagonists in Doris Lessing’s African stories. The thesis will primarily comment on human experience with a particular focus on the quest for one’s “self”. Other significant issues are the position of women in society, including social and political circumstances. The research will also include an analysis of the human psyche--more precisely, thought, behaviour, and personality. The significance of dreams and visions, their symbolism, and their relation to reality will not be left out in the discussion. They are, undoubtedly, an important element within the search for one’s self and they may reveal the subconscious of the protagonists. Additionally, psychological aspects in the analysed novels will be linked to the concept of identity, and to its quest. The thesis will primarily comment on various feminist views with references to a wide range of approaches relevant for the discourse, and to make the argument more interesting, these approaches will be supported by the textual evidence providing both implicit and explicit insights. However, all of this will be discussed within the context of human and social relations of the women heroines in the novels of Doris Lessing. Construction of the qualification paper. Chapter I Postmodernist period in English literature The term Postmodern literature is used to describe certain characteristics of post–World War II literature and a reaction against Enlightenment ideas implicit in Modernist literature. As with all stylistic eras, no definite dates exist for the rise and fall of postmodernism's popularity. 1941, the year in which Irish novelist James Joyce and English novelist Virginia Woolf both died, is sometimes used as a rough boundary for postmodernism's start. The prefix "post", however, does not necessarily imply a new era. Rather, it could also indicate a reaction against modernism in the wake of the Second World War (with its disrespect for human rights, just confirmed in the Geneva Convention, through the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Holocaust, the bombing of Dresden, the fire-bombing of Tokyo, and Japanese American internment). It could also imply a reaction to significant post-war events: the beginning of the Cold War, the civil rights movement in the United States, postcolonialism (Postcolonial literature), and the rise of the personal computer (Cyberpunk fiction and Hypertext fiction). Some further argue that the beginning of postmodern literature could be marked by significant publications or literary events. For example, some mark the beginning of postmodernism with the first publication of John Hawkes' The Cannibal in 1949, the first performance of Waiting for Godot in 1953, the first publication of Howl in 1956 or of Naked Lunch in 1959. For others the beginning is marked by moments in critical theory: Jacques Derrida's "Structure, Sign, and Play" lecture in 1966 or as late as Ihab Hassan's usage in The Dismemberment of Orpheus in 1971. Brian McHale details his main thesis on this shift, although many postmodern works have 7

developed out of modernism, modernism is characterized by an epistemological dominant while postmodernism works are primarily concerned with questions of ontology. Postmodern literature, like postmodernism as a whole, is hard to define and there is little agreement on the exact characteristics, scope, and importance of postmodern literature. But as is often the case with artistic movements, postmodern literature is commonly defined in relation to its precursor. For example, instead of the modernist quest for meaning in a chaotic world, the postmodern author eschews, often playfully, the possibility of meaning, and the postmodern novel is often a parody of this quest. Postmodern authors also tend to celebrate chance over craft, and further employ metafiction to undermine the writer's authority. Another characteristic of postmodern literature is the questioning of distinctions between high and low culture through the use of pastiche, the combination of subjects and genres not previously deemed fit for literature. Postmodern Early in the century the Roman Catholic Church condemned a good many doctrines and practices, ancient and modern, under the capacious umbrella of “modernism,” and right away, as early as 1914, in spite of the appearance of nonsense in the term, theologians began speaking of “Postmodernism” by careless analogy with “postimpressionism.” “Postmodern” has been applied to much contemporary writing, particularly with reference to the use of experimental forms. The fundamental Philosophical assumptions of modernism, its tendency toward historical discontinuity, alienation, asocial individualism, and EXISTENTIALISM continue to permeate contemporary writing, perhaps in a heightened sense. But the tendencies of the modernist to construct intricate forms, to interweave symbols elaborately, to create works of art that, however much they oppose some established present 8

order, create within themselves an order universe, have given way since the 1960s to a denial of order, to the presentation of highly fragmented universes in the created world of art, and to critical theories that are forms of PHENOMENOLOGY. Myth has given way to the experiencing of aesthetic surfaces. Postmodernism in literature is not an organized movement with leaders or central figures; therefore, it is more difficult to say if it has ended or when it will end (compared to, say, declaring the end of modernism with the death of Joyce or Woolf). Arguably postmodernism peaked in the 60s and 70s with the publication of Catch-22 in 1961, Lost in the Funhouse in 1968, Slaughterhouse-Five in 1969, Gravity's Rainbow in 1973, and many others. Some declared the death of postmodernism in the 80's with a new surge of realism represented and inspired by Raymond Carver. Tom Wolfe in his 1989 article "Stalking the Billion-Footed Beast" called for a new emphasis on realism in fiction to replace postmodernism. With this new emphasis on realism in mind, some declared White Noise in 1985 or The Satanic Verses in 1988 to be the last great novels of the postmodern era. Both modern and postmodern literature represent a break from 19th century realism. In character development, both modern and postmodern literature explore subjectivism, turning from external reality to examine inner states of consciousness, in many cases drawing on modernist examples in the "stream of consciousness" styles of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, or explorative poems like The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot. In addition, both modern and postmodern literature explores fragmentariness in narrative- and character-construction. The Waste Land is often cited as a means of distinguishing modern and postmodern literature. The poem is fragmentary and employs pastiche like much postmodern literature, but the speaker in The Waste Land says, "these fragments I have shored against 9

my ruins". Modernist literature sees fragmentation and extreme subjectivity as an existential crisis, or Freudian internal conflict, a problem that must be solved, and the artist is often cited as the one to solve it. Postmodernists, however, often demonstrate that this chaos is insurmountable; the artist is impotent, and the only recourse against "ruin" is to play within the chaos. Playfulness is present in many modernist works (Joyce's Finnegans Wake or Virginia Woolf's Orlando, for example) and they may seem very similar to postmodern works, but with postmodernism playfulness becomes central and the actual achievement of order and meaning becomes unlikely. 1965 – Little changed during the 1960s in the national life of England; what had been characteristic in the 1950s continued and was accentuated. The Empire continued to shrink to an island realm. Struggles in Ireland between Catholics and Protestants intensified and demanded more and more of the attention of the English. Inflation continued to function as a great equalizer of classes. Extensive strikes often almost paralyzed the country. A kind of spiritual malaise seemed to envelop many of the English people, a malaise seemed to envelop many of the English people, a malaise sharply defined by Margaret Drabble in her novel The Ice Age (1977) In literature it was a time of continuance and compilation. Graham Greene, Kingsley Amis, and Lawrence Durrell continued to produce work typical of their younger days. Doris Lessing completed the Children of Violence series. C. P. Snow brought his ambitious Strangers and brothers series to a conclusion, and Anthony Powell completed A Dance to the Music of Time. The most challenging new novelistic talents were John Fowles and Margaret Drabble, both serious although very different experimenters in form. For much of the period, the strongest poet was Phillip Larkin, who explicitly aligned himself with the native tradition of 10

Thomas Hardy. Of the newer playwrights, John Osborne, Harold Pinter, and Tom Stoppard showed the most vitality and talent. As England entered the last quarter of the XX th century, it seemed to be groping for position and definition in a diminished world, both of social and political reality and of art. Postmodernism ... can be used at least in two ways – firstly, to give a label to the period after 1968 (which would then encompass all forms of fiction, both innovative and traditional), and secondly, to describe the highly experimental literature produced by writers beginning with Lawrence Durrell and John Fowles in the 1960s. In what follows, the term 'postmodernist' is used for experimental authors while "post- modern" is applied to authors who have been less innovative. 11

1.1 Dorris Lessing’s biography “Any human anywhere will blossom in a hundred unexpected talents and capacities simply by being given the opportunity to do so.” (Doris Lessing) Doris Lessing, a British author of modern fiction, was born on 22 October 1919 in Persia. In 1925, she moved with her parents, who were of British origin, to a farm in Southern Rhodesia, where she spent her childhood. She is, without any doubt, ranked among the most famous post- war English novelists. In 2007 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, as the oldest person who has ever won this prize (she was 87 years old). In the 1940s Lessing joined the Communist Party, which influenced her political thinking a lot. Nonetheless, her political ideas have changed directions many times in the course of her life. Lessing’s early novels are primarily concerned with the African setting and race relations in Africa. Apart from that, her early fiction might be considered autobiographical, as it reflects her own experience form Southern Rhodesia. As soon as she moved to London, her first novel The Grass is Singing (1950) was published and immediately gained success. The story is set in Africa and it traces the tragic life of a farmer’s wife, Mary Turner, and comments on the disintegration of the coherence of her “self”, as a result of the oppressive forces coming from the outside. It actually “traces her decay into death,” as Taylor points out (25). The main focus of this novel is Mary’s psychological development and, in particular, consequences of the oppressive society and the repressed self. Not only does the novel speak against colonialism in Africa but it also refers to sexual conflicts. However, it might be a bit surprising that despite Lessing’s search for racial equality, she portrays Mary Turner as a representative of racism of the local white community. Generally speaking, 12

Lessing’s writing covers many styles and approaches, ranging from feminism and Marxist theory to communism. In addition to that, she is also particularly concerned with psychology, politics, and sociology and she always comes up with new spiritual themes and perspectives in her writing. One of Lessing’s novels of wide comprehension is the Children of Violence series. It is, in fact, a “study of the individual conscience in its relations with the collective,” as Thrope claims. In other words, the novel depicts “conflict between the self and society . It traces the development of the main protagonist, Martha Quest, in a colonial African society of the 1930s and 1940s and it also reflects some autobiographical aspects that might be paralleled to Lessing’s private life. Martha Quest, as well as Lessing, gets married twice throughout the series. In the second part of the series, A Proper Marriage, Martha is also involved with left-wing political activities and it enables her to become a part of the “collective”, which also refers to Lessing’s political activity. What is more, Lessing presents both outside and inside perspectives to readers--the former being concerned with a social life and human relations, and the latter reflects a self-analysis. The “violence”, as the title itself suggests, implies social pressures manifested especially in male-female love relationships and related institutions. In his essay, “Love, Mourning and Metaphor: Terms of Identity”, Kenneh explains that “love itself is always that wild and bitter region where violences and fantasies obscure and pervert the meeting and recognition between individuals and groups” (148). It is also interesting to point out that on account of the fact that the Children of Violence series is written in the third person, Lessing’s narrative also enables readers to “move into the character’s mind” (Scanlan 79). The volumes of the Children of Violence series (1952-1969) comprise Martha Quest (1952), A Proper Marriage (1954), A Ripple from the Storm (1958), Landlocked (1965), and The Four-Gated City (1969). The whole series is based on the self-analysis of 13

the main character, Martha Quest, who goes through a long and complex process of searching for the integrated self. As an illustration, Martha’s vision of the ideal city is, in fact, “an image of integration,” as Pickering asserts in his essay: On the level of the collective, it represents an ideal state where all ages and races live together in harmony and beauty; on the level of the individual, it implies the wholeness of the self, the goal of individuation. Thus Martha’s vision represents both her political ideal and her unconscious personal goal; well-ordered and integrated into a unified whole, it symbolizes both what the world should be like and what she should be like. The issue of “free woman” is central also to the analysis of Lessing’s novel The Golden Notebook (1962). In this context, Walter Allen stresses the importance of the issue of an “independent-minded woman” and he points out to the fact that the novel is “an exposition of the emotional problems that face an intelligent woman who wishes to live in the kind of freedom a man may take for granted” (298). Anna Wulf, the heroine of this novel, is also among major protagonists of the women’s movement. Interestingly, Lessing is considered a feminist writer by critics, although she herself refuses to accept this view. It is perfectly understandable that Lessing’s narrative structure, which retells the story from a woman’s point of view, is marked as feminist: “The fact that Lessing’s fiction often presents a woman’s point of view has led some critics to label her as a feminist writer” (J.F. Allen 64). Nonetheless, her primary intention is to comment on 20th-century life--which entails significant pressure upon women--and to refer to humanity as a whole, with all its possible influences. As far as Lessing’s writing career is concerned, it can be divided into three phases: 14

1. “Communist phase”--concerning social issues (1944 - 1956) 2. “Psychological phase”--focused on the psychological development of her characters (1956 - 1969) 3. “Sufi phase”--discussed themes related to mysticism (1969) Apart from that, her later fiction includes: This was the Old Chief´s Country (1951), Going Home (1957), Briefing for a Descent into Hell (1971), The Summer Before the Dark (1973), Collected African Stories (1973), Memoirs of a Survivor (1975), Collected stories (1978), The Fifth Child (1988), The Good Terrorist (1985), and many essays, dramas and short stories, such as Five: Short Novels (1953)--stories set in Africa, for which Lessing won the Somerset Maugham Award. As far as her recent fiction is concerned, it includes for instance African Laughter (1994), Mara and Dann (1999), The Sweetest Dream (2002) and her famous autobiography called Under My Skin (1994), which describes her childhood experience in Southern Rhodesia. One of her latest novels, Alfred & Emily (2008), also refers to her personal or family experience and on account of the fact that it combines more genres it is ranked both among fiction and non-fiction. Here I examine Lessing's first novel The Grass is Singing (1950), her short story "To Room Nineteen" (1978), The Summer Before the Dark (1973), and Martha Quest and A Proper Marriage , the first two novels of Children of Violence. The reason that I group them together is because each text deals with Lessing's constant preoccupation between an individual's conscience and that of the wider collective, although in neither of her texts do her protagonists seek deliberately to break down into madness as they will in later texts and in The Golden Notebook . Since Lessing's interest in Sufic thought almost coincides with the publication of The Golden 15

Notebook (1962), understandably it is only after this date that her protagonists most fully confront archetypal images and aspects of a Jungian self. Lessing's The Grass is Singing and "To Room Nineteen" are most remarkable for their accurate depiction of her characters' self-annihilation. Such a death, whether literal or psychological, occurs because the characters cannot act independently of the ideologies which impinge upon them. Kate Brown is more fortunate in developing a sense of a more complete self than Martha in these early Children of Violence texts. In a similar way to Anna Wulf in The Golden Notebook , who decides to become a social worker, Kate Brown returns to her family responsibilities with a heightened sense of self-knowledge and identity. Unlike Anna though, Kate Brown never seeks "madness" nor does she allow her self to merge with the collective unconscious in the same way. Her psychic transformation falls short of the Sufic ideal of individual evolution through an exploration of subjectivity and a corresponding realisation of one's inherent potential. In both Martha Quest and A Proper Marriage , Martha is resentfully cognisant of collective pressures which include, as was the case for Mary Turner, a societal expectation for her to marry conventionally. In contrast to Mary Turner, and Susan Rawlings in "To Room Nineteen," however, Martha fights, even if unsuccessfully, against these collective forces. Like Kate Brown, she makes conscious efforts to develop her own definition and statement of selfhood. She differs from Kate though, in that she decides to leave her marriage, rather than to return to it. In this chapter I shall be chiefly concerned with the commonalities between these texts, all of which, bar The Summer Before the Dark and "To Room Nineteen," precede Lessing's The Golden Notebook . I also discuss here the importance of each text in relation to Lessing's self-representational 16

presentation of either her unified self at any given moment or selves, and to Lessing's changing treatment of madness, a frequent motif in her works. 1.2 Doris Lessing’s Life and Fiction In her writing Lessing often touches on racial issues concerning the black community, although these are usually not the main themes of her fiction. As Thrope asserts, “two thirds of the African stories are about the personal lives of the white settlers, with the natives in the background” . Lessing is actually concerned with issues regarding human psyche, racial integration and, last but not least, the integration of women in social groups. As regards the themes explored in her early African stories, these involve mainly race relations and the difficult position of women in a male- dominated world. Moreover, they are concerned with Lessing’s childhood experience in Southern Rhodesia and reflect “the individual in himself and in relation to society” . Autobiographical and psychological tendencies regarding her women protagonists, such as Martha, should not be left out in this discussion. Most importantly, Lessing’s novels reflect “the evolution of a personality in time” . J.F. Allen presents her themes and issues in the following quotation: Through her repetition and counterpointing of motifs, Lessing exposes the destructiveness, the dead ends, of some traditional institutions, particularly marriage, which often confines women to the collective experience of motherhood at the expense of their creative selves. And she exposes humanity’s destructive weaknesses that permit human being to settle into the snug nest of the collective. Her free people are individuals who escape this destruction. Freedom is one more significant element in Lessing’s writing. She claims that “human beings are responsible and they can be free: but the prerequisite for their freedom is the choice of a creative mean between 17

alienation and the mindlessness of the collective”. Lessing’s women characters are searching for personal freedom and for the true self but they always find themselves in the middle way. In other words, “in Lessing’s world women are almost human manqué; they do not achieve self- fulfilment in the traditional roles of wife and mother, nor do they succeed as ‘free’ or professional women. The source of their failure is dual: they do not feel the need to assume responsibility for themselves, and they are deeply, but wrongly, committed to romantic love, the two being casually linked”. Lessing’s point of view is apparent in the following quotation: One must have the time and opportunity to explore the sense of the self behind the social façades even if that sense of self is not socially acceptable and requires an excursion into madness or involves hostile and anti-social attitudes. Like Virginia Woolf, Lessing believes that a woman, particularly at middle-age, must find a room of her own and spend some time discovering who she really is. In some respects, Lessing’s themes also follow the views of Jung who “did not suggest that the male was preferable, dominant, or more desirable” . Lessing actually searches for some kind of balance between male and female elements in human beings. Moreover, she defines a “new territory that establishes the female as an integrated whole and one worthy of major focus in a male dominated world” . On the whole, the protagonists of her novels are “embodiments of ‘every person’, an identification that goes beyond a character’s sexual or political identity” . The focal point of Lessing’s analysis is the protagonists’ mind, inner life, and forms of consciousness. What is more, her autobiographical perspective also enables her to realistically portray her personal emotions and views, providing thus to readers and critics a variety of approaches and complex issues for discussion. 18

In her first novel The Grass is Singing (1950), Lessing sets up the model of the collective experience, then illustrates how Mary attempts to adapt herself to androcentric expectations about women even though she is unsuited to them. Then she undercuts these expectations and these artificial constructions of selfhood with Mary's personal experience of negating self through death. It is significant that Mary "could have become a person on her own account. But this was against her instinct." 1 It is this unwillingness and inability to act on her own account which distinguishes her from other women protagonists of Lessing's transitional or intermediate novels. In later works such as Children of Violence , The Golden Notebook , and The Memoirs of a Survivor , Lessing's heroines undertake successful journeys towards individuation. These protagonists are active and dynamic whereas Susan Rawlings and Mary Turner choose only to die. Lessing states of Mary's life that "it was a passive one, in some respects, for it depended on other people entirely" (35). Her life becomes the object of other people's commentaries since "she was not playing her part, for she did not get married" (36). When she inadvertently overhears friends discussing how "she just isn't like that," she is spurred into looking for a marriage partner in order to fulfill patriarchal expectations. In The Grass is Singing, then, Lessing reveals the consequences of a protagonist's failure to reconcile personal experience and aspects of her personal identity with the dictates of a wider collective. For example, Mary does not consciously seek to explore her past and her unhappy childhood, even though she makes every effort to live an existence different to that of her mother. By her obdurate and unexamined attempts to reject the way her parents lived, Mary, like the Martha of the early novels of Children of Violence , repeats their mistakes. She resists marriage because when Mary thought of "home" she remembered a wooden box shaken by passing trains; when she thought of marriage she remembered her father coming 19

home red-eyed and fuddled; when she thought of children she saw her mother's face at her children's funerals anguished, but as dry and as hard as rock. Mary liked other people's children but shuddered at the thought of having any of her own. She felt sentimental at weddings, but she felt a profound distaste for sex; there had been little privacy in her home and there were things she did not care to remember; she had taken good care to forget them years ago. It is partly Mary's refusal to come to terms with the sexual side of marriage that causes the later sterility of her own marriage. Her initial fear of sexuality bars her from entering into a relationship, and when her acceptance of a proposal is rewarded with a kiss, a "violent revulsion overcame her and she ran away". Understandably, when she experiences love-making for the first time with her new husband Dick Turner, she is unable to meet him sexually. Instead, "she was able maternally to bestow the gift of herself on this humble stranger and remain untouched" . With relief she thinks, "it was not so bad ... not as bad as that . It meant nothing to her, nothing at all" . Having experienced sex, however, she does not want children. Maternity would mean a deeper, more personal confrontation with her sexuality which she refuses to acknowledge. Once, when she passes a group of African women, she knows that she hated the way they suckled their babies, with their breasts hanging down for everyone to see; there was something in their calm satisfied maternity that made her blood boil. "Their babies hanging on to them like leeches," she said to herself shuddering, for she thought with horror of suckling a child. The idea of a child's lips on her breasts made her feel quite sick; at the thought of it she would involuntarily clasp her hands over her breasts, as if protecting them from a violation. Her revulsion towards her own body becomes significant later in the novel when she allows Moses to view her as she dresses. 20

Mary's horror of sexuality is inextricably linked with an inescapable past. Although she banishes thoughts of her childhood from her consciousness, her fear of her father becomes manifest in her dream life. Dreams reveal her need to become reconciled with her past in order to live a whole and balanced life in the present. In one unpleasant dream, there was her father, the little man with the plump juicy stomach, beer-smelling and jocular, whom she hated, holding her mother in his arms. ... Her mother was struggling in mock protest, playfully expostulating. Her father bent over her mother, and at the sight, Mary ran away. In another dream in which she plays hide-and-seek, her father caught her head and held it in his lap ... to cover up her eyes. ... She smelled the sickly odor of beer, and through it she smelled too her head held down in the thick stuff of his trousers the unwashed masculine smell she always associated with him. She struggled to get her head free, for she was half-suffocating, and her father held it down, laughing at her panic. This last dream must have autobiographical significance, for Lessing repeats it in The Memoirs of a Survivor , which she calls her "attempt at an autobiography," and again in her actual autobiography Under My Skin . It exemplifies Lessing's use of self-representational writing to confront, examine, and exorcise frightening aspects of her past, something which Mary Turner never does. Mary does not learn from her past, and it comes to haunt her marriage to Dick Turner. The union is a mistake, since she marries in order to prove she is like her conventional friends, who settle, happily, it seems, into marriage and family life. Mary cannot become like them because she is neither willing to remember her childhood nor to learn from it. Because of this failure she does not mature emotionally or psychically. Not only does she not reconcile herself with her past, but she also does not attempt to adapt herself to her hated present. For example, she 21

dislikes accompanying Dick out on to the lands and shrinks from having to observe the unprofitable farm which traps her. Because she holds fast to the racist assumptions about Africans taught to her by her parents, she becomes fearfully insistent that their workers are pilfering her household belongings. Alone day after day in the house, with the sun beating down relentlessly on to the roof directly above, her entrapment forces her into a close contact with Moses, who makes her confront her abhorrence and fear of African people and her lack of knowledge about them. Paradoxically, when he becomes her house servant, Moses gains power over her. This is because she cannot forget the occasion when she once hit him, and she fears that he will retaliate. For Mary then, sex, fear and violence are intimately connected. Moses mesmerises and obsesses her as he carries out his household duties in clothes that are too small for him, in a house which seems too large, filled up with his bulk. Partly because neither Mary nor Dick develops their own sense of selfhood, both immediately regret their decision to marry. But it is too late. Mary's new life of respectable poverty and struggling decency binds her to her past, and upon arriving at Dick's after her wedding she comes to know that "this tiny stuffy room, the bare brick floor, the greasy lamp, were not what she had imagined". A gap opens up between the myths of the collective and the real experiences of her parents, which she inevitably repeats. Lessing provides no escape for Mary, who can neither return to her single life before marriage nor adapt herself to marriage. Unlike Martha in The Four-Gated City , Mary cannot escape the pressures of the collective through mysticism and a transcendence of the earthly self. As Lessing comments, the women who marry men like Dick learn sooner or later that there are two things they can do: they can drive themselves mad, tear themselves to pieces in storms of futile anger and rebellion; or they can hold themselves tight and go bitter. Mary, with the memory of her own 22

mother recurring more and more frequently, like an older, sardonic double of herself walking beside her, followed the course her upbringing made inevitable. Mary chooses the passive course and seems to die from within as she observes Dick's many unprofitable attempts to save the farm from bankruptcy. When Dick, having failed at his schemes to turn his farm to profit with bees, pigs, turkeys and rabbits, opens a "kaffir" store on their property, the similarities between Mary's past and present appear complete: "it seemed to Mary a terrible thing, an omen and a warning, that the store, the ugly menacing store of her childhood, should follow her here, even to her home" . Like Susan Rawlings in "To Room Nineteen," Mary cannot talk to Dick honestly about her feelings, "for the good reason that he was now associated in her mind with the grayness and misery of her childhood, and it would have been like arguing with destiny itself". For Mary then, an individual cannot change her or his self through an act of will. Her inability to develop positively her own sense of self proves fatal. Such authorial intrusion might allow a critic to interpret The Grass is Singing as a text chiefly concerned with racial issues. 23

1.3 General themes in Lessings works As far as the roles of men and women in Lessing’s novels are concerned, they seem to be clearly defined. All novels actually represent a patriarchal society with a primary authority of men over women. For example, “women are denied the right to create their own images of femaleness, and instead must seek to conform to the patriarchal standards imposed on them” . This quotation represents a point of departure for critical approaches relating to feminism. Similarly, Holmquist describes feminism as “a militant attitude directed towards female oppression in the sense of economic, political and psychological mechanisms which prevent women from realizing their full potential as human beings” . As regards Lessing’s view, oppression of women is manifested in both novels-- especially within the socio-political context and family relationships. On the one hand, Lessing considers the family a fundamental institution whose social function, unfortunately, prevents women from realizing their potential. On the other hand, she stresses the importance of biological and reproductive female identity, which women cannot do without as they are biologically predestined to it. Hence, social and biological points of view are intertwined in Lessing’s novels and provide a wide range of contrastive elements which enable to connect the individual and collective identities. Patriarchal society is clearly demonstrated in all of Lessing’s novels analysed in this thesis--Martha Quest, A Proper Marriage, and The Grass is Singing. Male characters in this patriarchal society--such as Douglas (Martha’s husband) and Dick (Mary’s husband)--have a possibility to “exercise authority and power over women due to their control over the public and political realm of life which determines the conditions of the private lives of women“.Nevertheless, emancipating attempts of women to 24

disrupt the hierarchical order, such as Martha’s involvement in politics and Mary’s involvement in the organisation of farm matters--though only temporal--appear to be successful just for a short period of time. Martha and Mary consider their involvement in these matters, which are originally intended to be reserved only for men, highly challenging. By their participation, both Martha and Mary are able to prove their ability to act on an equal level to men, and to take an active part in their social lives. This behaviour, however, poses a question of how, or to what extent, such attempts are effective and how they may possibly be accepted by bourgeois society: Martha tries to form an identity in a society where the division of labour between the sexes is strictly defined according to the norms of the bourgeois family: women are confined to domestic life, they are wives, mothers and lovers, whereas men have their main function within the social and political spheres of life. Marriage is a white middle class woman’s way of realizing her social potential. It is also worth stressing that social issues and relations are central for the development of female identity. One of the most relevant elements to discuss is the role of marriage and family. In fact, it is the family, which is “the source of women’s oppression because under patriarchal domination it is the agency in and through which women and men are engendered-- replicating men who dominate, women who submit” . Without any doubt, family and child rearing are gender stereotypes generally assigned to women. It is evident that Martha’s alienation, both from her parents and her husband, is a starting point for her future quest for the self. Her dream of a city, presented in the first novel of the series Children of Violence, is actually her first expression of dissatisfaction with the current situation of her life and with the social aspects associated with it. As far as Martha’s 25

relationship with Douglas is concerned, she considers it a “possibility of realizing the dream” . She believes that love, as a dream, has the power to bring about changes in her life and to provide her with the sense of belonging, as contrasted to her feeling of alienation. Love is, however, most of the time also associated with marriage, family and child rearing. In other words, “marriage provides Martha with a social identity”. And this statement holds true also for Mary. Unfortunately, Martha believes that her life will follow the girl stories from the novels, in which young girls marry, have a child and are happy in the end. Nevertheless, she does not feel like that at all. Her contemplation about marriage, love, and life is based on the facts that appear in the books she likes to read. At one point in the novel Martha expresses her disillusionment concerning marriage: “If you read novels and diaries, women didn’t seem to have these problems. Is it really conceivable that we should have turned into something quite different in the space of about fifty years? Or do you suppose they didn’t tell the truth, the novelists?” .As I have suggested earlier, Martha does not believe that marriage can be a source of happiness, as it is demonstrated in various novels that she often consults with the intention to find some references to her own life. Furthermore, she takes into consideration the fact that the role of women may have changed in the course of years and by expressing her idea that there might be a “new kind of woman in the world” she actually provides a new insight into the mind of Lessing’s female characters. The analysis of existence of this “new kind of woman” is actually a fundamental point of research in this thesis. On one occasion Martha comes up with the following idea: The mother-daughter relationship is another aspect worth stressing in this context as it concerns, to a great extent, both female characters. Martha’s alienation from her mother makes her more dependent on men due to the fact that they might provide her with the missing love and 26

emotions. Her dependence on men, however, manifests itself in a rather negative way. After the birth of her daughter Caroline, her dependence is even stronger. Eventually, in order to prevent her daughter from similar tensions and disagreements that she had with her own mother, Martha decides to leave her. By this act she manages to free herself and to provide freedom also for her daughter Caroline. Having left Douglas, Martha feels no more restricted by her marriage bonds and by her motherhood, which seem to represent only negative forces in her quest for the real self. Society forces upon her roles that she refuses to adapt to. In contrast to Mary, she eventually manages to escape from her marriage and thus avoids a similar fate that Mary has to suffer, although the circumstances of these two cases are not much comparable. Mary also manages to escape from her husband for a short period of time but having been rejected by people in town she is soon constrained to return to Dick’s farm. The outward identity of Martha and Mary is closely connected with their inner identities, or more precisely, the outward identity is a point of departure for the inner identity of these two female characters. Even though these two elements often do not accord, they are to a certain extent dependent on each other. The inner life of female characters may be analysed only through a detailed research based on references to outward influences and impositions represented by society. For instance, Mary’s mental illness is presumably the result of her repressed sexuality. It results in her madness because she does not have a possibility to behave in accordance with her natural self and her needs are repressed. In the case of Martha, such a manifestation has a bit different form than in the case of Mary. That is to say, Mary’s life has a descending tendency--an independent woman described at the beginning of the novel is gradually transformed into a weary woman who has no point of destination and no motivation in her life. As a matter of fact, Mary’s long-suppressed identity 27

cannot be revitalized any more. Her unconcerned approach is mainly caused by her passive attitude towards Dick, society, and, most importantly, towards herself. Slow and unconscious “mental poisoning” affecting Mary is launched together with the arrival of Moses, her black servant, which is also a point of departure for the analysis of her madness. The term “lethargy” or “indifference” is used on several occasions when Lessing refers to Martha’s feelings concerning pregnancy and similar references are used, even to a much greater extent, in comments regarding Mary’s life. Many different points of view regarding child-raising are presented in the novel. Alice, for instance, considers pregnancy as peaceful time: “It’s all very well, dear, but this worrying all the time just gets me down. Sometimes I think I’ll have a baby and be done with it. That’d be nine months’ peace and quiet at least” .Martha’s view of motherhood is quite negative at first and following her mother’s visit, she decides that “she must not sink into being a mere housewife”. As a matter of fact, she does not feel prepared for motherhood. Having found out that she is pregnant, Martha feels uncomfortable and miserable. She is anxious and desperate about her pregnancy as she does not want to settle down and become an ordinary housewife. Martha’s mother, however, considers pregnancy as “the greatest experience in a woman’s life” . The discussions between Martha and her mother reveal the conflicts of two generations that may see things quite differently. Apart from that, Martha has no other choice but to have a child, for social prejudices do not allow abortion. Martha comments on the position of pregnant mothers remarking angrily: “Do you mean to say that a woman’s not entitled to decide whether she’s going to have a baby or not?” .Douglas also touches the problem of abortion at one point of the novel, which makes Martha extremely infuriated. She explains that no one has the right to “tell women what they should do with their own 28

bodies”.Moreover, she considers this point of view as “the final insult to personal liberty” . Douglas insistently justifies the law, whereas Martha thinks more about women and their personal rights. Besides, people believe that Martha has married him because of that baby and it would not be a good idea to change her mind at this moment: “Stella was now explaining to both Alice and Martha that it was the duty of young married couples to have children while they were young: their duty to the children, who would naturally prefer to have parents who were brothers and sisters to them”. For this reason, Martha has to face both the difficulties of her unexpected motherhood and her troublesome relationship with her mother who is sometimes caring too much for her daughter’s life. Martha’s feelings regarding pregnancy are also expressed in the following description: “She could not keep still. She could not read. Above all, she felt there must be something wrong with her, to feel like this. For at the back of her mind was the vision of a woman calm, rich, maternal, radiant; that was how she should be”. Without any doubt, both Martha and Alice find their motherhood “humiliating and intolerable” and for this reason they keep searching for various ways to liberate themselves from such a heavy burden. 29

Chapter II The importance of female protagonists in Lessing’s novels 2.1 Social Stereotype of Female Protagonists Lessing’s novel, The Grass is Singing, depicts human relations, social structures and racial prejudices in Rhodesian society. Her point of view in this novel is unique. Jeannette King describes her style as “critical realism” . However, it does not concern “a mirror-view of reality” but rather “knowledge of it” In fact, “it makes sense of historical processes by revealing the relationship between the human subject and the objective world, thus embodying knowledge of the structures of reality” . It is always the individuals who make up the society and for this reason it is valuable to explore their minds to get a better picture of the social issues in south Africa. There is an impersonal narrator in this novel but points of view keep changing. It makes a psychological analysis of particular protagonists much easier, as the reader has the possibility to see through their thoughts. Furthermore, it enables the reader to penetrate more deeply into the minds of Rhodesian people and thus make an objective picture and conclusions about it. Readers can hardly judge objectively, if they are only provided with one point of view. However, the dominant narrative voice in the novel is that of Mary, which may propose only one way of understanding--i.e. a woman’s perspective. In her novels, Lessing concentrates more on personal lives of the protagonists but puts them in relation with the society. A female protagonist of The Grass is Singing is Mary Turner, a Rhodesian woman who refuses a marriage at first but who is later constrained to get married by social expectations. This woman is not strong enough to ignore the prejudices of the society concerning the role of women and she simply decides to “conform to a woman stereotype” . By means of this marriage, she actually “evades responsibility for her own life” This woman 30

stereotype, however, does not correspond with her “self”. Following her decision, a great conflict arises concerning “the gap between what one is and what one aspires to be” .Mary’s lost selfhood is a critical moment for her because “her idea of herself was destroyed” and she cannot “recreate herself” . It is essential to take into account the fact that she “split into two selves, the one who feels totally without power, and the other whose power is ‘borrowed’ from the system which enforces her own oppression”.. And her constant fight between these two selves is also the cause of her nervous breakdown at the end of the novel. Before Mary dies, she reflects on her life through contemplation and eventually feels joy for a short time: “The world was a miracle of colour, and all for her, all for her! She could have wept with release and lighthearted joy. And then she heard it, that sound she could never bear, the first cicada beginning to shrill somewhere in the trees. It was the sound of the sun itself, and how she hated the sun!” The sun reminds her of long years spent on the farm and of all the troubles connected with it. She is expecting her death--it is inevitable and she feels it coming soon. She has no power to defend herself against it and she accepts it as the only thing that might save her: “Somewhere he stood, listening for the gong that announced the last day”. In the last moments of her life she is suffering and imagines herself as an “ugly, pitiful woman, with nothing left of the life she had been given to use”. She feels innocent but at the same time she is looking for the evil: The evil is there, but of what it consists, I do not know. Even the words were not her own. For the evil was a thing she could feel: had she not lived with it for many years. How many? Long before she had ever come to the farm! Even that girl had known it. But what had she done? And what was it? What had she done? Nothing of her own volition. Step by step, she had come to this, a woman without will, sitting on an old ruined 31

sofa that smelled of dirt, waiting for the night to come that would finish her. And justly--she knew that. But why? Against what had she sinned? At this point of the novel, she tries to recall all the mistakes she had made. She considers herself not guilty but blames her despair on the outside circumstances, against which she had not fought. She realizes her passivity, the main reason of her dissatisfaction being the fact that she has never tried to penetrate into things and into the minds of people. She has been too impersonal and distant from her life. This fact is referred to in the following passage: Such little beetles to make such an intolerable noise! And she had never seen one before. She realizes, suddenly, standing there, that all those years she had lived in that house, with the acres of bush all around her, and she had never penetrated into the trees, had never gone off the paths. And for all those years she had listened wearily, through the hot dry months, with her nerves prickling, to that terrible shrilling, and had never seen the beetles who made it. At this moment of her life, she thinks that Moses is the only one who can rescue her and she is patiently waiting for him to arrive. This is the last demonstration of her indifferent attitude to life--she passively chooses to accept the coming death. The positive feeling of being rescued suddenly changes into helplessness and she, again, realizes that actually nothing and no one can save her: “There was no salvation: she would have to go through with it” .At the beginning of the novel she wanted to save herself by means of marriage but it did not work either: “Yes: long, long ago, she had turned towards another young man, a young man from a farm, when she was in trouble and had not known what to do. It had seemed to her that she would be saved from herself by marrying him” .Now the situation is different but her feelings are similar: “There was nothing new even in her death” (The Grass is Singing 212). The most important thought, 32

explaining her failure, is revealed only a few moments before she dies: “She would walk out her road alone, she thought. That was the lesson she had to learn. If she had learned it, long ago, she would not be standing here now, having been betrayed for the second time by her weak reliance on a human being who should not be expected to take the responsibility for her” It would have been better if she had stayed in the town as an unmarried woman and had lived her life on her own, independently of others. Eventually, she regrets everything and feels “defenceless”. She regrets the fact that she had depended so much on other people and thus could not free herself. On the other hand, she finds out that it is impossible to be alienated from others. She feels the irrational need to become a part of a certain community and to be able to act as an individual at the same time. Surprisingly, in the second part of the novel Martha’s attitude and feelings change considerably. She suddenly feels “terribly happy to be having a baby” . What is more, she does not understand why she had refused to have a child. This reconciliation with the fact that she is going to be a mother makes her contemplate about her child in a completely different way: “She, Martha, the free spirit, would protect the creature from her, Martha, the maternal force; the maternal Martha, that enemy, would not be allowed to enter the picture. It was as one independent being to another that Martha spoke”. Even Mr Maynard, as well as Martha’s mother, asserts that “children are the only justification of marriage”. Eventually, having given birth to her child, Martha has mixed feelings about her motherhood again: “Martha found herself disliking the child, hating her swollen breasts, and filled with disgust at the way milk flowed over her a dozen times a day like a tide” .And later she even keeps rejecting her motherhood: “I wish I’d never had a baby at all”. She goes through various phases of indifference, or more precisely, states of “lethargy” She obviously shares this feeling with her friend Alice: 33

She cried out that she wished she had never got married, she knew now that she had never loved Willie at all; she couldn’t understand how she had been so crazy as to tie herself down to being nothing but a piece of livestock to be stuffed three times a week, and then swollen like dropsy, and then a cow streaming with milk, and her breasts were so sore she couldn’t bear it. Immediately after birth, the author depicts Martha’s attitude to her child: “There was this band of tension, felt deeply as a web of tight anxiety, between her and the child. Every moment, every sound Caroline made reverberated through Martha” .Martha still keeps struggling with feelings of “guilt and defiance. She does not assume properly the role of a mother and what is more, she lacks affection towards her daughter: She wished it were already the end of the day, and Caroline safely in bed and asleep. Then her, Martha’s, life might begin. And yet the hours of evening were as restless and dissatisfied; she always went to bed early to put an end to them. Her whole life was a hurrying onwards, to get it past; she was back in the tension of hurry, hurry, hurry; and yet there was nothing at the end of it to hurry towards, not even the end of the war, which would change nothing for her. At one point of the novel Martha even admits that she hates Caroline. “But as far as I can make out, one of the most important functions of parents is that they should be suitable objects of hate. Well, then, so it’s right and proper you should hate my guts off and on, you and I are just victims, my poor child, you can’t help it, I can’t help it, my mother couldn’t help it, and her mother. Douglas is not involved in bringing up Caroline and does not care much for her, as he is far away from home on account of the war: “The truth was, he had been relieved to get away from the atmosphere of bottles and napkins, and, more than this, from Martha’s extraordinary tension during those months, when competent gaiety 34

followed irritated exhaustion, and both seemed in some subtle way a criticism of him” .However, when Douglas is supposed to get back home and meet Martha again, his feelings suddenly change: “Tenderness for Martha and his small daughter filled him”.Undoubtedly, when Martha and Douglas see each other after a long time, they both feel something has changed: “They embraced. For both there was something false and unpleasant in this embrace” .What is more, Martha begins to feel a kind of revulsion to this soldier--her husband. Her image of him has altered to a great extent: That sudden vision of the soldier who was her husband had been a shock to her which only now began to make itself felt. It was quite impossible that this man should be her husband. She was married to one of the boys; he would always, all his life, be one of the boys. At sixty he would still be a schoolboy. There was no escape from it. The condition of being a woman in wartime, she thought angrily, was that one should love not a man, but a man in relation to other men. 35

2.2 Male-female Relationships: Mary and Dick As a matter of fact, the relationship of Mary and Dick Turner is going through different phases. Generally speaking, there is “no real misunderstanding between them”. At first, Dick appears to be a representative of a submissive husband who does not seem to make any attempts to defend himself against his wife. The narrator explains that “it had really been such an easy way to win mastery over him, the sort of trick women use to defeat their men” . He does not seem to be the “boss” in their relationship, in spite of the fact that he is the one who takes care of the farm to make a living. All the troubles are always blamed on the inhospitable weather. They are depressed by making no profits on their farm and by living in poverty. Mary’s initial superiority, however, does not have long duration: “She would have to sit like a queen bee in this house and force him to do what she wanted”. Indeed, Dick does not feel submissive but according to his behaviour it seems so. In discussions with his wife he always ends in “apologizing, abasing himself, and she forgiving him” .At first Dick sees Mary as “a busy and popular woman with a secure place in the social life of the town”. Nevertheless, “people made her get married,” as she says, and this is what makes her unhappy in her current life .She feels her old life in the town might have been a better choice for her but not for the society. Apart from that, Mary cannot take over the role of a man. As King puts it, “She is not however allowed to assume the role of the white boss, since she as a woman--exists on the margins of the black/white power structure. Her energy and efficiency threaten Dick’s position in this structure. Mary’s superiority over Dick, however, does not work as she would like: “If she were always with him, always demonstrating her superior ability, his defensiveness would be provoked and he would refuse, in the end, to do anything she wanted”. Mary wants Dick to work on his 36

own, to be successful and not just constantly pity himself because of bad luck: When she saw him weak and goalless, and pitiful, she hated him, and the hate turned it on herself. She needed a man stronger than herself, and she was trying to create one out of Dick. If he had genuinely, simply, because of the greater strength of his purpose, taken the ascendancy over her, she would have loved him, and no longer hated herself for becoming tied to a failure. Dick is still unable to fulfil her expectations, which makes her dissatisfied. She tries to change the situation, however unsuccessfully. Not being able to make both of them satisfied, Dick feels aggrieved: “He stubbornly went his own way, feeling as if she had encouraged him to swim in deep waters beyond his strength, and then left him to his own devices”. At this moment, there is still some hope about the future prosperity of the farm and Mary does not refuse to believe it. It is revealed only a few moments later that it is just her “dream of hope” . But suddenly her dream turns into despair. A significant part of the novel is Mary’s useless attempt to escape from the farm. As she cannot bear the life on the farm anymore, she returns to the town, regardless of the consequences. To her great surprise she is not accepted by the local people who used to be her friends. Dick does not reproach her for this escape, instead he feels more closely attached to her: “He was attentively solicitous to her after her running away--for her return had bound him to her in gratitude for ever” . In any case, he cannot imagine living without her. As they get over this difficult phase of their relationship, they seem to get closer to each other again, as illustrated in the following quotation: They were moving gently towards a new relation; they were more truly together than they had ever been. But then it was that he became ill; 37

and the new tenderness between them, which might have grown into something strong enough to save them both, was not yet strong enough to survive this fresh trouble. At this point Mary still feels she can change their lives and hence takes the responsibility for the farm in the course of Dick’s illness. Dick is worried that his wife, who will be in charge of the whole farm, will not manage: “Every conscious moment he worried about the things that would be going wrong without his supervision” . Having cured himself, Dick eventually comes to “take up the reigns again as if her sovereignty had been nothing, nothing at all” . When Mary proposes to start growing tobacco, he cannot stand it. Her interference into the affairs concerning his farm is unacceptable: “He looked at her almost with horror, as an alien creature, who had no right to be with him, dictating what he should do” . He presumably feels defeated and humiliated, as a man. His reactions are as follows: “Well, boss, can I think it over for a few days?” . The word “boss” that Dick uses is a clear demonstration of Mary’s initial superiority in their marriage. In fact, “it was the only time she could bring herself to use endearments to him, when she was feeling victorious and forgiving. His cravings for forgiveness, and his abasement before her was the greatest satisfaction she knew, although she despised him for it”. Put another way, Mary’s feelings towards her husband are rather contradictory. Although she “finds the idea of normal sexual relations with Dick repulsive, both her subconscious, expressed through dreams, and her psychotic state toward the end of her life demonstrate the extent to which an abnormal or unusual sexual manifestation is desired”. This psychological conflict is, undoubtedly, the cause of her dissatisfaction and her subsequent mental breakdown. As far as Mary’s racial views are concerned, they are actually imposed on her by her parents. As soon as she starts to take care of the 38

farm, racial conflicts arise between her and the natives. Undoubtedly, she would like to master them, however, the natives protest against her supremacy. Mary has always tried to avoid being in contact with the natives in all possible ways and now she is the one to supervise them on her own: “She had to crush down violent repugnance to the idea of facing the farm natives herself” . She even refers to them as “evil-smelling creatures”, “filthy savages” or “animals” and she imposes her authority on them: She hated their half-naked, thick-muscled black bodies stooping in the mindless rhythm of their work. She hated their sullenness, their averted eyes when they spoke to her, their veiled insolence; and she hated more than anything, with a violent physical repulsion, the heavy smell that came from them, a hot, sour animal smell. The natives naturally fight back, for “they resented her, a woman, supervising them” .As a result, they are reluctant to work and she is at a loss about how to teach them obedience. Once, she uses force, with one of her servants Moses, and this finally ensures her, to a large extent, her position as a boss among the natives. The natives’ resentment might be ascribed to the fact that they would expect their master to be a man, not a woman, according to the conventions of the society. This is also Dick’s point of view: “He did not like to think of Mary close to those natives all day; it was not a woman’s job. And besides, she was short of labour”. Although Mary feels hostility towards the natives, supervising them makes her satisfied: “The sensation of being boss over perhaps eighty black workers gave her new confidence; it was a good feeling, keeping them under her will, making them do as she wanted”. The natives’ attitude towards their work, as Mary understands it, is illustrated in the following contemplation: “They would never be any good until they learned to work without supervision, for the love of it, to do as they were told, to do a job for its own sake, not thinking about the money they would be paid for it”. 39

Her supervision of the farm is actually “enforced activity” , which enables her to bring the farm “near to her”, to make it more “real” .This event explains that as soon as she becomes active, she gets closer to the things, and she may understand them better, for they become real to her. And this is also the case with the farm: Before it had been an alien and rather distasteful affair from which she voluntarily excluded herself, and which she made no attempt to understand as a whole, thinking it more complicated than it was. She was now annoyed with herself that she had not tried to appreciate these problems before. Nevertheless, she does not stay active long enough to be able to change something. Consequently, her attempts usually end in a failure. She starts to exclude herself from the outside world, stays in solitude and cannot become integrated in the society. The conflict is between personal and collective expectations. Later, further disagreements arise between Dick and Mary. It is obviously due to the lack of understanding and their unsuccessful attempts to gain a honourable position in the society. As far as the issue of submissiveness is concerned, they constantly keep fighting over superiority. Dick seems to be more submissive but at times he manages to fight back and defend himself: “Now she was analysing the farm, and the organisation of crops, in a way that made him feel humble, but also provoked him to defend himself” . Finally, Mary withdraws but wants Dick to take over the initiative on the farm: “She only knew that she wanted him to be a success and make money, so that they would have the power to do what they wanted, to leave the farm, to live a civilized life again. The stinting poverty in which they lived was unbearable; it was destroying them” . On the one hand, they cannot live without each other but on the other hand, their unfortunate cohabitation is, presumably, what is 40

destroying them. Dick identifies himself with nature and cannot imagine a life outside his farm, however, Mary’s inclination to the independent life in the town is evident. Without any doubt, she finds it difficult to adapt to living on the farm. On the contrary, Dick “off his farm he would wither and die” . As the years go by, Mary does not feel lonely and does not even need to discuss anything with other women of her age--not even with her neighbour Mrs Slatter: “Loneliness, she thought, was craving for other people’s company. But she did not know that loneliness can be an unnoticed cramping of the spirit for lack of companionship” . Moreover, as Schlueter asserts, “throughout her life Mary had been isolated, both in fact and in feeling, and this isolation had created in her a feeling of noninvolvemnt in the lives and feelings of others that she calls ‘freedom”. This clarifies her “impersonal” attitude to everyone and everything. As far as colour prejudices are concerned, the blacks are not considered to be humans: “At the heart of the book is the struggle the various whites have in refusing to accept the blacks as human--not as equals, but merely as human” . Schlueter also speaks about a certain “code” of behaviour that the white people exercise towards the natives: “When it came to the point, one never had contact with natives, except in the master- servant relationship. One never knew them in their own lives, as human beings” . This fact is also demonstrated in the narrative voice of the novel. Although the reader has the possibility to follow the points of view of the white people, there is no narrative voice penetrating the minds of the natives. Hence, the readers can judge the natives only on the basis of the facts that they acquire from the narrative voices of the white people. The most significant moment of the novel is when Moses, one of the servants on the farm, with whom Mary had previously a personal conflict, becomes a servant in their house. The attitude of Mary towards him is the central theme to discuss. Their relationship turns into a personal one and it 41

becomes extremely complicated for both of them to live together in one place: What happened was that the formal pattern of black-and-white, mistress-and-servant, had been broken by the personal relation; and when a white man in Africa by accident looks into the eyes of a native and sees the human being (which it is his chief preoccupation to avoid), his sense of guilt, which he denies, fumes up in resentment and he brings down the whip. In fact, Mary’s obsession concerning Moses slowly makes her go mad. It is important to consider the fact that she has virtually no one to talk to, not even Dick who would not understand her. As she becomes more and more passive, the inferiority towards her husband becomes evident. Dick talks to her “like a superior to a subordinate” . As a result of this, she starts to act foolishly. 42

2.3 The issue of isolation and the concept of “suffering female” From the psychological point of view, no personal growth of the main protagonist is to be seen in the novel. Mary’s obsession is caused by her isolation from the outside world: “She behaves simply as if she lives in a world of her own, where other people’s standards don’t count. She has forgotten what her own people are like. But then, what is madness, but a refuge, a retreating from the world”. However, Dick and Mary’s isolation is conscious--they do not even have a telephone on the farm. As a result of this, they are referred to as “ignorant” and the other people do not know much about their lives. The Slatters, however, know that “they live like pigs and never buy anything” .Dick slowly realizes that Mary’s behaviour is rather strange, as he asserts in his discussion with Charlie Slatter who is curious about her health: “No, not ill. But she’s not too good. Seems nervy. She’s run down. Been on the farm too long” .Besides, Dick is worried about his wife’s indifference: “She doesn’t care about anything. She simply sits and does nothing,” he says. He does not understand why she is “living out of contact with everything” .She does not know what is happening outside their farm since she is absolutely isolated. Apart from that, she is idle and lets the life escape without the possibility to penetrate it. She used to be quite sociable when she was younger and therefore this isolation makes her feel depressed. Without any doubt, the life on the farm has changed Mary’s behaviour as well as her appearance considerably. At the beginning of the novel, she is described as “a slim blonde” and at the end of the novel as a “strange, silent, dried-out woman who seemed as if she had forgotten how to speak”. Moreover, she is hopeless, uninterested and desperate, behaving as if she were invisible. 43

As far as the feminist approach is concerned, Mary adopted from her mother the same indifference, the same qualities, and the same voice, which is demonstrated in one of her conflicts with Dick over the natives and their poverty: “It was not the voice of Mary, the individual but the voice of the suffering female, who wanted to show her husband she just would not be treated like that”. The expression “suffering female” is the evidence of the difficult position of women in society of that time. There are more passages referring to similar behaviour of Mary and her mother. She is influenced by her upbringing and despite her efforts to change it she finds out that it is impossible. The narrator claims: “She had inherited from her mother an arid feminism, which had no meaning in her own life at all, for she was leading the comfortable carefree existence of a single woman in south Africa, and she did not know how fortunate she was” . At the beginning she seems to be a self-confident and emancipated young woman: “There was nothing to prevent her living by herself, even running her own car, entertaining on a small scale. She could have become a person on her own account. But this was against her instinct. Nonetheless, in the end her emancipation is “eliminated” by the circumstances, which makes her inert. Consequently, her passivity, indifference, and apathy bring about her death: “Her mental and physical breakdown can thus be seen as the result of the limitations imposed on this once independent and active woman, who ironically married to be her own mistress”. In the course of her life, Mary’s attitude is getting more and more pessimistic, presumably on account of her disability to see things positively and to hope for better future: “She felt as if a touch would send her off balance into nothingness; she thought of a full complete darkness with longing” .This state of mind is obviously caused by the fact that nothing changes. The words “nothingness” and “darkness”, in fact, refer to her death, which she is slowly approaching. When she speaks with Tony, she reveals her real 44

obsessions and regrets: “It’s a long time since I came here. So long that I can’t quite remember...I should have left long ago. I don’t know why I didn’t. I don’t know why I came. But things are different. Very different. . I don’t know anything. I don’t understand. Why is this happening? I didn’t mean it to happen. But he won’t go away, he won’t go away” .It would be of great interest to pose a question at this point. What does Martha in fact mean by referring to “he”? It is presumably Moses--her constant obsession and nightmare. Tony starts to contemplate about Mary’s relation to the natives: “she had shut out everything that conflicted with her actions that would revive the code she had been brought up to follow” . Because of the fact that she ignores everything connected with her past, including the things that made up her selfhood, she cannot go on living. Mary is referred to as “impersonal” by the narrator: “She could not exist without that impersonal, casual friendship from other people .And as far as her sexual attitude is concerned, she feels “repelled by the thought of intimacies and scenes and contacts” .It is also interesting to point out that “outside the girls’ club, she led a full and active life. Yet it was a passive one, in some respects, for it depended on other people entirely” .As the above quotation suggests, Mary suddenly realizes that she cannot live without others. What is more, she does not care about men, although she is, in fact, “entirely dependent upon them” .She always associates her childhood memories with her present life. As a matter of fact, she is subconsciously influenced by her childhood experience: When Mary thought of ‘home’ she remembered a wooden box shaken by passing trains; when she thought of marriage she remembered her father coming home red-eyed and fuddled; when she thought of children she saw her mother’s face at the children’s funeral--anguished but as dry and as hard as rock. Mary liked other people’s children but shuddered at the thought of having any of her own. She felt sentimental at 45

weddings, but she had a profound distaste for sex; there had been little privacy in her home and there were things she did not care to remember; she had taken good care to forget them years ago. Martha Quest’s life and marriage described in the second part of the Children of Violence series called A Proper Marriage presents a complex portrait of Martha’s life in relation to the Rhodesian society, or rather, as Schlueter asserts, “a study of the individual conscience in its relations with the collective” . This part of the series comments on female independence and emancipation and discusses related themes such as relationship, sexuality, marriage, motherhood, and politics. A self-analysis of Martha Quest, the heroine of the series, enables to readers penetrate the mind and thoughts of an emancipated young woman living in Rhodesia. In fact, Martha makes analyses of her own thoughts but also pursues a course of action on the basis of her psychological examination of other people--thus connecting personal and collective experience (also depicted in Lessing’s other novels). In this part of the series the focal point of attention is Martha’s life with respect to her marriage and marital relationship. Social pressures make her marry Douglas Knowell, with whom she does not appear to be satisfied. In order to fulfil her desires, she searches for solution to her problems in literature, dreams, and political activity. Literature means a lot to her, as it gives her a new view of the world. What is more, following her books of study, Martha soon becomes obsessed with emancipation and a search for liberty. As far as relationships between men and women are concerned, the views on marriage in this novel are depicted in a rather conventional way, which Martha resents: “She thought confusedly that there was always a point when men seemed to press a button, as it were, and one was expected to turn into something else for their amusement. This ‘turning into something’ else had landed her where she was now: married, signed and 46

sealed away from what she was convinced she was” .Stella is, in contrast to Martha, in accordance with these conventional social expectations, which is clear from her comment on Martha’s appearance: “ you look awful, Matty, and it’s your duty to your husband to look nice” . Stella actually seems to be a prototype of an unemancipated woman who respects the traditional laws of society with the role of man as a breadwinner: “You’re mad to work when you’re married,” she explains to Martha .Talking about men and their independence in a marital relationship, Stella claims that it is necessary to manage men “without them knowing it”. They need to have independence and women must find the best strategy to make them tied to themselves. Martha is astonished at the way Stella and Alice speak about men: “Martha observed irritably that Stella and Alice talked about husbands as if they were a sort of wild animal to be tamed”. Martha is actually discouraged by Stella’s mature attitude but soon she also experiences the feeling of a lonely woman waiting for her husband to come home: Now, because Douglas was with Willie, in that atmosphere of men escaping their wives, he put on that tone with her. She was furious that he could do it. She assured him, gaily, that of course he must go out with the boys, of course she didn’t mind--as she always spoke on these occasions. But when she put the telephone down, she was angry. It was all intolerable. She was shut in here, in this flimsy little flat, by the rain, because of the baby in her stomach, forced to accept that falsely humble voice from a young man who by himself would never think of using it: she was the wife of one of the lads. That was all. Her fantasies concerning an ideal romantic marriage suddenly dissolve because of the fact that her marriage turns out to be the same as other people’s marriages. Alice has, apparently, similar problems--the author depicts her view in the following passage: “The two women looked 47

at each other, acknowledging frankly in this moment that they wished they had never married, wished they were not pregnant, even hated their husbands”. Hence, both women have to go through a phase of disappointment and despair with regard to their marriage and pregnancy. Martha tries to “recreate the coarsened soldier into something masculine and strong and attractive” but it is extremely difficult for her. Douglas always imagines Martha as a submissive housewife who takes care of their children, although he makes attempts to deny it: “Ever since we’ve been married you agreed I wasn’t only to housekeep and mind babies,” she reminds him . As soon as Douglas returns home, it seems to him that Martha “had built up a life of her own, with obligations and responsibilities” .Both of them are slowly getting farther from each other and in the course of years “the hatred between them was so strong it frightened them both” The tensions between them continue until their relationship completely and inevitably breaks up. 48
