^ Fiction ^ The early postwar mood of alienation and disengagement found its fictional analog in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951). Holden Caulfield is Salinger's pouting Peter Pan, burdened with a superior sensitivity to cant and eager to take on all the world's phonies single-handedly. Holden's voice snaps with a contempt for propriety that has beguiled millions of young readers for decades: If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them. In fact, Holden's clamorous innocence is the wispy stuff of day dream, a simplified Rousseauean fantasy linking childhood with wisdom. His ambition to shield children from danger or from the contamination of obscene graffiti is at bottom a species of self-defense, a withdrawal from the messy world of grownup sexual and ideological entanglements. Seventeen years old, Holden furiously resists his own adulthood; his rebellion is finally more a poignant gesture than a profound act. Salinger followed The Catcher in the Rye with a handful of small books: Nine Stories (1953); Franny and Zooey (1961); and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction (1963). At the center of each story lies some version of the same lament over the alleged emptiness of contemporary culture. Salinger's frightened longing for purification led to a series of religious gesticulations, including appeals to universal love, Jesus, Taoism, and Zen. He prefers a_ moral terrain of shadowless clarity; his evaluations are blinkered by an adolescent impatience with ambiguity. As an an tidote to America's spiritual

distemper, he offered a couple of saintly characters warmed by his own sticky affection, images of innocence imperiled by the world's assorted snares. Following Seymour, Salinger virtually disappeared. Only Thomas Pynchon has carried the argument against publicity to greater lengths. Salinger stopped publishing and went into seclusion in New England, where he has remained for over a quarter of a century, silent except in defense of his privacy. In 1987, he won a court suit against publication of a biography that he believed intruded on him unfairly. Most of Salinger's work appeared first in The New Yorker, a magazine whose distinctive style he found congenial. The New Yorker, antimodernist but sophisticated in its literary preferences, nurtured a prose of high finish: arch, unflappable, laconic, tremen dously knowing. The New Yorker has only a tourist's interest in politics, but, ironically, the magazine's lineage can be traced back to the journalism of more populist and even more radical turn-of-the-century periodicals. In particular, The Masses, a monthly con catenation of drawings by John Sloan and George Bellows, essays by Randolph Bourne and Max Eastman, and advertisements for Karl Marx Cigars, was a pioneering venture in graphics and design that imprinted its innovations upon less engage successors. From its founding in 1911 until it expired in 1917, a casualty of the First World War, The Masses was devoted to dreams of socialist revo lution. The radical politics have long since vanished, and the legacy of The Masses was dispersed in the country's middlebrow visual culture. Begun in 1925, The New Yorker has in sixty-five years published an anthology of well-wrought prose and poetry, much of it in re sponse to the unease of modern urban life. Along with Salinger, the magazine's authors in the postwar years included John Hersey, whose Hiroshima took up the entire issue of August 31, 1946, Peter Taylor, John Cheever, John Updike, Vladimir Nabokov, and Don ald Barthelme, writers who established and repeatedly met high standards of technical mastery.

All the stories in Cheever's first two books, The Way Some People Live (1943) and The Enormous Radio (1953), had been published in the New Yorker. There and in his later Wapshot novels, Cheever touched one after another of the bruised places that trouble the successful businessmen and golf widows who inhabit contemporary suburbia. He often seemed surprised at how much sadness can coexist with material comfort and stability. He was interested in the dis - appointment, sometimes the actual terror, that lies hidden behind the tailored curtains of affluent St. Botolph's. To push those curtains back, Cheever never hesitated to introduce gothic, myth, and fable into the ordinary bedrooms and backyards of Hitching Post Lane and Coventry Circle. Everything in Cheever is disoriented; in Bullet Park (1969), even the birds are rattled out of their migratory instincts by the over flowing birdfeeders that permit them to fill their small bellies and misplace their destinies through the fall and winter. In his later years, Cheever deliquesced into hopefulness. The violence and bad dreams of Falconer (1977) culminate in a call for rejoicing, and Oh What a Paradise It Seems (1982), Cheever's last novel, is swaddled in a nimbus of affirmation. Beginning by the edge of a polluted lake, an emblem of Walden's insulted fate in technologyland, the tale moves toward the consolations of a tran - scendental vision: "The sense of the hour was of an exquisite priv ilege, the great benefice of living here and renewing ourselves with love." Like Cheever, John Updike has taken for his subject the dis contented men and women whose lives occupy the puzzling, un defined space between older inhibitions and contemporary permissiveness. These are people whose sexual and spiritual gropings are signs of a frustration bequeathed by new freedoms. They drift, they couple and uncouple and couple again, they run. In the fore word to Hugging the Shore (1983), a collection of his essays and reviews, Updike writes that his critical touchstone is a "fervent relation to the world." In the essays, he repeatedly circles back to religious questions and to the difficulty of investing fiction with seriousness in a culture of multiplying counterfeit.

As those essays also demonstrate, Updike has read widely, and he tends to use quotation and allusion to document his large pur poses. His novels are larded with mythology, saints' lives, citations from the Bible, Dante, Pascal, nineteenth-century novels, and the philosophy of Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Alexander Blok, and Sartre. The fiction comprises an anthology of solemn reference that often misfires by merely confirming his suburban sufferers in their small-ness. The Centaur (1963), for example, is split in two by Updike's ambitions. A poignant rendering of a buoyantly pessimistic, doomed high school teacher named George Caldwell, the book finally dis appears behind the scaffolds and ladders of its elaborate crosscutting to the legend of Chiron (Figure 173). With increasing explicitness, from Couples (1968) forward, Up dike has made sex one of the central nodes of his work: often acrobatic, typically joyless, invariably misogynist. His intentions, at least professedly, are not to titillate but to explore, in the manner of a latter-day, pornographic Emerson. In search of the spirit, Up dike conducts repeated forays into the flesh. Fittingly, though he was raised in rural Pennsylvania, he has lived most of his adult life in New England. He is the temperamental heir of the Puritans and transcendentalists: the women of The Witches of Eastwick (1984) descend from seventeenth-century Salem, and Roger's Version (1987) reenacts The Scarlet Letter from Reverend Dimmesdale's point of view. Updike's first books, the poems of The Carpentered Hen (1958) and the short novel The Poorhouse Fair (1959), appeared when he was in his midtwenties. Since then he has published a prodigious list of fiction, essays, and poetry. Rabbit, Run (i960), Updike's second novel, is the tale of Harry ("Rabbit") Angstrom, a car salesman who has fallen from the pleasures of high school basketball excellence into the mediocrity of remorse and fleshly panting. The first Rabbit novel was eventually joined by two others, Rabbit Redux (1971) and Rabbit Is Rich (1981), to com prise a trilogy of postwar discontent, a sexual-political odysse; reaching from the waning days of Eisenhower's presidency to th( outset of Reaganism.

Updike's restless talent has encouraged him to push into un familiar territories in search of subjects, structures, and voices Bech: A Book (1970), for example, presents the middle age of i written-out but durable Jewish author, and The Coup (1978) tell: the tragicomic history of the poverty-stricken African country o Kush. In all his diverse work, and in spite of his efforts to objec tify myth, to encompass national and global politics, and to discern the motions of grace in his characters' nonstop gulpings and lickings and plungings, Updike's principal achievement has beer bound up in his management of the visible and local. He i: gifted with apparently inexhaustible verbal resources, and he dis plays them most prodigally in summoning up the here and now Self-regarding, calculated, his sentences move with a confiden swagger, one brilliant image following another like polished ob - jects. The sheer numbers of them, over hundreds of pages, can produce a glut of "fine writing." In the end, Harry Angstrom and Bech and the Maples of Too Far to Go (1979) are excuses for Updike's expenditures of talent, poor souls not redeemed from banality by the prose that engenders and eventually overpowers them. The final point of Updike's writing is itself. > Nonfiction < he term "nonfiction novel" might have been invented in connection with any number of postwar books. In fact, the phrase originated with Truman Capote, who used it as a subtitle for In Cold Blood (1965). Capote, who had specialized in the melancholy southern gothic of Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948) and the social comedy of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), joined the sixties by reporting on a specific act of violence, the savage murder of a Kansas farm family by a pair of rootless psychopaths. Though it is soiled by Capote's misplaced sympathies, In Cold Bfood is an intermittently impressive assemblage of masses of information, which are used to build a naturalist case study in the hidden sources of gratuitous brutality. The murders which Perry Smith and Richard Hickock commit encapsulate lives twisted by insult, failure, and self-loathing.T Fifteen years after it was published, In Cold Bbod was inevitably compared to a bigger and more significant book, Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song (1979). Mailer

described his recreation of Gary Gilmore's crimes and death as "A True Life Novel." The book is a slab of prose, one thousand pages of toneless, featureless writing, patched together from interview transcripts, trial records, and news paper stories. Banality and grotesque revelation merge into each other in literally thousands of separate paragraph-units. Mailer's long fascination with existential outlaws compelled him to hope that Gilmore was more than a motiveless hoodlum, that he might in fact be a protagonist entitled to all the attention he receives in this book. Gilmore ought to be the dark descendant of the hipster, the defier of "square" morality whose heroic nonconformity Mailer once praised in a dozen stories and articles, beginning with the notorious essay "The White Negro" in the late fifties. Such overreaching propositions collapse under the inert weight of Gilmore's meager awfulness. What remains is Mailer's immense journalistic effort and his apparent complicity in packaging and selling Gilmore to the several media. Despite his rigorous refusal of almost every ordinary novelistic opportunity in the book, the central figure in The Executioner's Song, as always in Mailer's work, is Mailer: choosing, selecting, editing, brooding, writing. Decades earlier, in Advertisements for Myself (1959), he had committed himself to making "a revolution in the consciousness of our time." That romantic ambition proved unten - able for Mailer's fiction, tempting him into one novelistic cul-de-sac after another, from The Deer Park (1955) to Ancient Evenings (1983). But Mailer's self- appointed role as the scribe and perhaps the agent of apocalypse has given significance to his nonfiction, urging him to chronicle the major political stories of the postwar era. Mailer's novels are redolent with a fear that masquerades as strut. His tiresomely thrusting, dominating, macho heroes disclose a con tempt for women almost luminous in its single-mindedness. Sergius O'Shaughnessy and the murderous Rojack of An American Dream (1965) are figures of fantasy, to be sure, but a villainous fantasy nonetheless. Ironically, the revolution intimated in Mailer's novels has been mainly a rearguard action, a stand against the fundamental

upheavals in ideology and especially in sexual attitudes, that have marked the postwar years. His books of reporting, on the other hand, occupy a space less confined by the solipsistic geometry that constrains his fiction. If he has trouble inventing figures commensurate with contemporary absurdity, he has no trouble finding them in each day's headlines. His finest prose takes shape at the intersection of public event and inner response. He has been too eager a participant, too oracular an explainer, and he has been too infatuated with theories of con spiracy. With all that granted, his indefatigable paranoia has given his observation an uncommon tenacity. Mailer's books on the political conventions of 1968 and 1972 remain the necessary guide to the two most interesting presidential seasons of the past forty years. In Miami and the Siege of Chicago (1969) and St. George and the Godfather (1972), a thousand en grossing details cohere in the scripts of modern morality plays. Of a Fire on the Moon (1970) ponders the fusion of potency and passivity that traps the astronauts within their life-supporting capsules. The brute power of unshielded flesh is the subject of The Fight (1975), a long essay on the title bout between Muhammad Ali and George Forman in Zaire. Aside from The Executioner's Song, Mailer's major work of re porting remains The Armies of the Night (1968). Subtitled "History as a Novel / The Novel as History," the book recreates the March on the Pentagon that took place in late October 1967, one of the major public protests against the Vietnam War. Like most of Mailer's work, indeed like most significant postwar literature, the book is a meditation on power: the concentration of power in bad hands, and the powerlessness of the opposition. The ragtag coalition marching against the war has nothing to throw into the battle but truth and its own rage. Mailer - heckler, cheerleader, spokesman, observer -knows how little the truth avails against the Pentagon's fortress walls: "the symbol, the embodiment, no, call it the true and high church of the military-industrial complex, the Pentagon, blind five-sided eye

of a subtle oppression which had come to America out of the very air of the century . . . greedy stingy dumb valve of the worst of the Wasp heart" (Figure 183). Mailer has sought new forms because he believes that late twentieth-century life is qualitatively different, and he believes as well that experience and expression are umbilically linked. Because he sees himself as the indispensable diagnostician of the contem porary, he desperately wants his work to matter. His frantic, splin tered life has that single motive. Consequently, his actions as a public figure are not diversions. His clowning, his loopy preachments about contraception, cancer, and reincarnation, his ill-conceived films, his comically strenuous campaign for mayor of New York City (and, in fairness, one should add, his useful presidency of the writers' organization PEN and his tireless prosecution of censorship around the world) have the same sources as his novels and journalism. His career is an instance of what he once called the perpetual transit of the modern ego "from the tower to the dungeon and back again." For over four decades, he has been searching for a style that might suit the gargantuan scale of contemporary confusion. His missteps are themselves instructive (Figure 184). The interplay between imagined and historical events has served as the wellspring for much recent fiction, including such commer cially successful entertainments as E. L. Doctorow's Ragtime (1975) and World's Fair (1986) and Gore Vidal's multivolume revisionist history of the United States, his smirking revenge on two hundred years of America. Paul Theroux, in The Great Railway Bazaar (1975), helped to rediscover the travelogue and directed that once-harmless genre into the more lurid corners of a troubled, postimpertal American psyche. Several of Joyce Carol Oates's novels represent a formidable effort to negotiate between fictional form and the requirements of an impinging reality. In an essay on modern fiction, Oates has rebuked the "stubbornly monastic" vision of Henry James and Vir ginia Woolf and has defined her allegiances in terms of social en - gagement. After James and Woolf, she wrote, "after the experiments of the mind's dissection of itself and its dissociation from the body, perhaps we are ready to rediscover the world."

One of Oates's first acts of rediscovery, and still one of her most powerful, was the novel them (1969). An author's note printed as preface to the book announces that "this is a work of history in fictional form." The novel, Oates claimed, is based directly upon the life,.and often upon the verbatim remarks, of the woman who appears in the book as "Maureen Wendall," a student in one of the classes Oates taught at the University of Detroit in the 1960s. The lives recounted in them are deadened by violence and violation, naturalist case studies retrieved like sad mementos from the larger chaos of a disintegrating Detroit. Oates's acute description of Flan-nery O'Connor's world can serve as a summation of her own as well: it is a "primitive landscape" in which there is "nothing to be rec ognized - there is only an experience to be suffered." The novel includes two letters from "Maureen Wendall," an exceptional act of candor and courage, since the letters are a cry of anguish that tie Maureen's devastated life to her experience in Oates's class: "You failed me. You flunked me out of school" (Figure 185). Oates has said that she writes "in flurries." Aside from docu menting her versatility and scope, her fifty or so books put exceptions in the way of most generalizations. She has occasionally provided her own version of her work in comments that reaffirm her sense of temporal and societal connection. "I have tried to give a shape," she has written, "to certain obsessions of mid-century Americans -a confusion of love and money, of the categories of public and private experience, of the demonic urge I sense all around me, an urge to violence as the answer to all problems, an urge to self-annihilation, suicide, the ultimate experience and the ultimate surrender." Among other valuable suggestions, this comment documents the source of the ubiquitous violence in Oates's work. She has complained that the repeated questions about the violence she nar rates are "always insulting, always ignorant, always sexist." In her own view of it, her violence is quite simply a faithful transcript ot the time's temper. Her grotesque episodes are born in the numberless forms of compulsion, danger, threat, and destruction that form the boundaries of contemporary existence. Melodrama has become the genre of daily life. In the

epigraph she chose for Angel of Light (1981). Oates conveyed her sense that the late twentieth century is merely driving an old truth to its farthest reach. She quotes from Bernard de Mandeville, an eighteenth-century moral philosopher, who claimed that evil is the grand principle that makes us social creatures. We must look to Evil "for the true Original of all Arts and Sciences. . . . The Moment Evil ceases, the Society must be spoiled." This is less a paradox than a fall into realism; it offers one way of defining the social and familial traps within which so many of Oates's char acters find themselves. Discovering what remains of the self s identity under such cir cumstances, what she has called "the phantasmagoria of personal ity," provides one of Oates's abiding concerns. That pursuit, in turn, has stimulated her to explore the forms of fiction. In the 1980s, she investigated the genres of gothic and romance in Belleflew (1980), A Bloodsmoor Romance (1982), and Masteries of Winterthum. (1984). This remarkable trilogy, together with her poetry, heressavs in criticism, and her virtuoso nonfiction, including Boxing (1987 V suggests Oates's ambition to command virtually all the styles and genres of contemporary literature. n one of her recent novels, You Must Remember This ( 1 9 8 7 ' . Oates has returned to the 1950s, the site of some of her strongest fiction. Her account of those early postwar years summons chiefly an atmosphere of dread and foreboding. The failure that is stamped on the faces and the souls of her characters mirrors the failure of history itself, which brings a universe of purposeless and random violence. The novel is a backward glance not only at the fifties but at the naive promises of an earlier generation that were extinguished by the war. The book's title is taken from the popular song of the late 1930s, "As Time Goes By," which in the early 1940s became the theme of the buoyantly patriotic and optimistic movie Casablanca. In Oates's vision of the 1950s, love and pride have sunk into the sadness of knowledge.I The awareness that troubles this and Oates's other novels has been widely shared, and her prolific disquietude may serve to con clude - and, at least in part, to represent - a survey of America's postwar literature. In its rich inventiveness, its

contemplation of dislocation and pain, its immersion in popular culture, its sensitivity to divisions of class and gender, above all in its anxious assessments of history, Oates's fiction identifies the questions to which much of America's recent writing has been addressed.
