INTRODUCTION The importance of the graduation work is directed to define the necessity of creating new methodological approaches in teaching the English languages. When Uzbekistan achieved independence on September 1, 1991, the choice of its own path of development allowed for conditions of reorganizing and improving the structure and content of education. During the 27 years of independence an enormous number of successful reformations have been carried out by our government under the leadership of the first president Islam Abduganievich Karimov and Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev the current president of our republic. Although this is a rather short period of time for a young state to develop, our motherland has been able to overcome many difficulties and began to prosper again in many fields of life. Today Uzbekistan is a world-known mighty and peaceful country that stands at the same rank with the world’s independent democratic nations. We think that the following data can illustrate the practical evidence of our opinion. At present, speaking a foreign language represents one of the essential requirements of today´s society. Besides other skills and knowledge, it is considered as one of the most influencing factors while applying for a job or sustaining in a particular work position under the condition of advancing the language level. Based on my work experience, I can confirm that knowing a foreign language is a necessity for everyone in general, mainly for my students – who are future English teachers. These people are required to reach a sufficient level in a foreign language in order to accomplish pedagogical assignments in teaching English. According to the requirement of National highest education in the Republic of Uzbekistan it is important to make effective changes in the System of higher Education. As I.A. Karimov highlighted “Our young generation must be quick- cutter wiser, healthier and of course, must be happier than us”. 3

The educational system of the republic of Uzbekistan is also advancing at a high speed. “As far as spirituality and enlightenment enter the number of major factors of the people’s upbringing, we must display the state’s care of the matters in this sphere and create all necessary conditions for their development”– that is how our president expresses his intensive care of educating the youth of our republic. Our government allocates more than the half of the state budget every year for cultivating the system of education. At present, Uzbekistan is among the leading countries of the world where 99% of the population is literate and education including primary and secondary general schooling; vocational and academic education is compulsory and is under state financing. 1 Educating the young generation has always been a top priority and the cardinal focus of social development in our republic. Our Constitution ensures that every citizen of Uzbekistan receives equitable education irrespective of their nationality, sex, language, age, ethnic origin, religious views, cultural background and social status. Along with that, the National Program of Personnel Training is an all- important factor in the realization of the republic’s educational goals. Improved system of academic lyceums and vocational colleges which are indispensable in further development of 9 th formers can be regarded as efficient outcomes of the work fulfilled by the above-mentioned organization and the laws on education. It goes without saying that in strengthening the bonds of friendship and in building mutually beneficial diplomatic ties with foreign states, languages, the English language in particular, has a vital role to play. With this regard, our republic has made notable attempts to put the emphasis on developing the techniques of teaching foreign languages. According to the Decree by the first President I. A. Karimov on December 10, 2012 “On Measures for further improvement of Foreign Languages Learning System”, it is stated that from the upcoming year on foreign languages would be taught to schoolchildren as early as when they are in their first form and that the 1 I.A.Karimov “High spirituality is invincible power” 2008,p.67 4

salaries of English language school teachers in urban areas would be increased by 15 percent and that of village school teachers by as much as 30 per cent. 2 As the head of the state noticed that “Learning of foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country beginning with the first grade of secondary schools in the form of gaming lessons and lessons on speaking, and with the second grade – mastering the alphabet, reading and grammar; Teaching of special subjects especially on technical and international specialties at higher educational institutions is conducted in foreign languages”. 3 This Decree has been a great stimulus for all the English language learners and teachers to work diligently and do their best to contribute to the well-being of the people of our young independent country. Being a potential teacher of English to Uzbek students, I have resolved that I conducted my graduation work on the theme “The role of a teacher in task-based language teaching”. It is necessary to improve to current situation, to provide Uzbek children with all the necessary conditions for the access to this amazing world of foreign languages. We should prepare in our country in the shortest time the methods of intensive foreign language learning based on our national peculiarities. 4 Besides that, student-centered teaching requires not only implementation of new up-to-date methodology and materials but new approaches to assessment as well. Consequently, it gives more emphasis on the teaching and learning process of foreign languages. In order to do this decree methodological skills are developed and assessed according to the world standards in order to prepare our teachers and future specialists answering the demands of new education system. Actuality and validity of the graduation paper : Based on the reasons above, in recent years, English language teaching has focused on teach the English language rather than teach about the English language. communicative ability with other skills. In order to develop the learners' all skills, the teacher needs to create a scenario to teach the target language in a vibrant, active and interesting manner. Task based learning is a piece of classroom work that involves learners in comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target language while their attention is focused on mobilizing their grammatical knowledge in order to express meaning, and in which the intention is to convey meaning rather than to manipulate form. Subject and Object of the graduation paper : The work focused on the significance and peculiarities of using global practices in time managing while teaching in Task based method. It studied the theoretical and practical ideas, principle, and ways of developing learners’ speaking skills with vocabulary, investigate the issues and ideas suggested by educators related to the research work. The aim of the graduation paper : The aim of the Graduation Project Work is to research the approaches to develop and modernize the strategies and principles of teachers role in task- based language teaching by creating new methods and criteria’s. The tasks of the graduation paper:  Study all theoretical and practical information about principles and strategies of teachers role in task based language teaching, at colleges and universities.  Analyze the theory of effective strategies what develop language skill by Task based teaching language.  Recommend on the usage of various ways in teaching for foreign language and its rules in teaching process.  Introduce with new approaches, principles and strategies of task based language teaching in methodology and methods to improve it.  Scientifiс novelty and practical value of the work includes the new communicative approaches in teaching foreign languages. The work could serve as a good source of learning English by young teachers at schools , colleges and 6

universities. It also could be used as additional materials at the methodology seminars. The structure of the graduation paper: The graduation graduation paper consists of the introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of the used literature. The first chapter gives the theoretical basis of the work, while the second chapter deals with the practical aspects of classroom management and it also includes conclusion and used literature. 7

CHAPTER I. THE THEORETICAL IMPORTANCE OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND THE ROLE OF A TEACHER IN TASK-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING 1.1. Classroom management and the role of a teacher in task-based language teaching. Task based learning is a piece of classroom work that involves learners in comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target language while their attention is focused on mobilizing their grammatical knowledge in order to express meaning, and in which the intention is to convey meaning rather than to manipulate form. The task should also have a sense of completeness, being able to stand alone as a communicative act in its own right with a beginning, a middle and an end. Both in the research literature on tasks and second language learning and in the pedagogical literature on task-based language teaching, the role of the teacher has received scant attention. The role of the teacher in TBLT is approached from three perspectives: a) the teacher as mediator of the students’ language development, contributing to the effectiveness of TBLT as a pedagogical approach to second language education; b) the teacher as a key figure in the implementation of TBLT, and thus as a change agent in the innovation of second language education; c) the teacher as researcher, and thus as an active contributor to the development and further refinement of TBLT as a researched pedagogy. Both in the research literature on tasks and second language learning and in the pedagogical literature on task-based language teaching, the role of the teacher has received scant attention. In the domain of second language acquisition, research on tasks and language learning has primarily focused on establishing relationships between certain features of language tasks (such as their complexity, 8

the type of information exchange involved, or the time pressure under which they need to be performed) and second language learners’ performance and/or development. In the pedagogically oriented literature on TBLT, the central role of the learner tends to be highlighted: Learners are typically described as active agents who, through the performance of tasks, develop implicit and explicit second language knowledge and gradually become more proficient in comprehending and producing the target language for meaningful purposes. TBLT is defined as a “learner-centered approach to language teaching,” which can be opposed to more traditional, “teacher-dominated” approaches. Likewise, in publications that aim to establish links between the available SLA research literature and the pedagogical literature on second language education, the key terms describing the core of TBLT are “tasks” and “learners.” TBLT as an approach that “aims to develop learners’ communicative competence by engaging them in meaning-focused communication through the performance of tasks.” On the same page, they added “a key principle of TBLT is that even though learners are primarily concerned with constructing and comprehending messages, they also need to attend to form for learning to take place.” All this the role of teachers in task-based language education seems to suggest that learners are supposed to do tasks independently, with the teacher withdrawing as much as possible and language learning coming out as an almost natural result. 5 This is particularly striking in the light of the robust empirical research evidence that has accrued over the past 15 years, in which the crucial role of the teacher in instructed learning has been documented. features of education systems that successfully combine a concern for excellence with a concern for equity singled out the teacher as the most important factor enhancing educational effectiveness. The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. During the past few years, the above-mentioned research evidence has even led to a surge of popular media interest in the role of the teacher in education. Clearly, not all teachers are equally effective. In this respect, the research into what distinguishes expert teachers from experienced and novice teachers is highly informative. Several frameworks that describe the typical behaviors of expert teachers and that are based on extensive empirical evidence are now available. By way of example . Based on a study in which more than 3,000 teachers were involved, and in which empirical links were established between student learning gains, observations of teacher’s behavior in the classroom, and surveys of students’ perceptions of good teaching, typical behaviors of expert teachers. By systematically integrating into the pedagogical decisions and actions they take, teachers can strongly enhance the learning that results from students’ classroom activity. Much of this boils down to the fact that from the student’s perspective, there may be a vast difference between doing and learning. In general, the term “learning” refers to people establishing relatively durable changes in their knowledge, skills, attitudes and competences. Even though people are capable of learning new things independently without the aid terms of use . Care The teacher gives the students the feeling that she or he really cares about them. The teacher tries to understand how students feel about things. Challenge The teacher tries to make sure that the students learn a lot and expects full effort from the students. The teacher asks the students to explain about the answers they give. The teacher does not let students give up when the work gets hard. The teacher wants the students to learn from their mistakes. The teacher explains difficult things clearly. The teacher has several good ways of explaining 10

each topic that is covered in class. When students do not understand something, the teacher explains it another way. The teacher introduces topics and content that captivate the students’ interest. The teacher makes lessons enjoyable. The teacher tries to make sure that students do not get bored. The teacher gives the students sample opportunity to share their ideas and express their thoughts. Students have a say in how things are done in class. The teacher respects the students’ suggestions and ideas. Consolidate The teacher checks to make sure the students understand what she or he is teaching. The teacher gives feedback and useful comments on students’ work and helps the students understand how they improve their work and correct their mistakes. At the end of the day or lesson, the teacher summarizes what the students have learned. Control The teacher makes sure the class stays busy and does not waste time. Students treat each other and the teacher with respect. of other people, empirical research strongly indicates that there are clear limits to independent learning, especially with regard to the development of complex skills. Learning often involves overcoming obstacles, correcting errors or misconceptions, refining behavior, building up New understandings and revising commonly held beliefs. For this to occur, the support of another person will often be helpful, decisive, and even crucial. In classrooms, support may come from peers, but in many cases, the help of a more competent partner will be necessary. In second language classrooms, the teacher clearly stands out as the most competent partner of the learners involved. All this is reflected in the pedagogically oriented literature on the role of the teacher in task-based language teaching. In what follows, I will first draw on these publications to describe what the role of the teacher in task-based classroom activity could look like. 6 This section, then, will focus on the role of the teacher as a mediator of language learning, and thus on the potential role teachers can play to enhance the effectiveness of task-based language teaching. empirical evidence that is available on what real teachers actually do when working with tasks. In this section, teachers are approached from their role as change agents, and thus as key figures in the actual implementation of TBLT. What has become clear over the past 20 years is that most teachers are inclined to implement TBLT in ways they see fit. As such, they aim to give shape to an approach to language learning that is not only consistent with a particular view on language learning or with specific pedagogical guidelines, but that they themselves also experience as practicable, feasible and appropriate for the particular context in which they are functioning. In the final section of this article, I will describe a third perspective on the role of the teacher in TBLT: If we aim to expand the empirical base on the teacher as mediator of language learning and the teacher as change agent in ways that drive the TBLT field forward, more teachers will need to be actively involved in classroom-based research on task-based language learning and teaching. the teacher as mediator of language learning 7 Drawing on the above-mentioned, pedagogically oriented literature on the role of the teacher in TBLT, the decisions and actions that teachers can take to optimally promote students’ learning from the task-based work they engage in, will be described below. For the sake of clarity, I will categorize them into pre-task, during-task, and post-task actions and decisions. As for pre-task actions and decisions, teachers may play a crucial role in selecting content and determining the focus of the classroom activity. Even though most teachers work in an institutional context in which guidelines with regard to (official) attainment targets, learning objectives, assessment procedures and even pedagogical approaches are issued, and many teachers also work with a commercial textbook or syllabus, the majority of teachers around the world retain a certain degree of autonomy. exercises the student will be exposed to, which text material will be covered, and which input the teacher will offer in their classroom. Moreover, in most cases, it is teachers who control the timeline of classroom activity: They decide how much time will be spent to each item on the agenda, how long a particular whole-class discussion will take, and how much time will be devoted to the performance of a particular task. It is teachers, too, who get to decide to which extent a focus on meaning and a focus on form will be balanced, and which particular forms will be highlighted, practiced, or covered explicitly. In other words, even if they are working with a task-based syllabus, it is teachers who design the task-as-work plan for the next day in their classroom. In this respect. In a task-based approach, teachers who select content and determine the focus of actual lesson activities should first and foremost be guided by an analysis of the students’ second language learning needs, much more so than by the table of contents of the syllabus they use. The teacher remains a crucial interactional partner in task-based language classrooms, by taking the role of motivator, organizer, and, last but terms of use Motivating the students has to do with introducing tasks that the students find interesting, valuable, and relevant, on the one han d , and which they find challenging yet doable, on the other hand. Clearly, there are a myriad of ways in which teachers can put this to practice, including actions such as highlighting the goals of the lesson, emphasizing the usefulness in real life of what the students will be learning, raising an interesting question, or pursuing a topic the students have introduced. This also requires a considerable amount of organizational actions from the teacher, such as providing clear task instructions, putting learners in groups, organizing turn-taking during whole-class discussions, maintaining control over what happens in the classroom, all of which are not restricted to the introductory stage of a task-based lesson, but are a teacher’s concern from the beginning of a task-based lesson to the very end . As illustrated in Example 2, the teacher as organizer also has to make sure that the sequence of activities the 13

learners engage in is logical, coherent, and is built up in such a way that learners are continuously exposed to challenges that remain doable. Task based learning has been a viable methodology in language pedagogy and a prominent area in language acquisition. At the same time language acquisition researchers also saw it as a promising framework for studying language acquisition in instructional settings. 8 The aspects of task design include input variables, task conditions, task outcomes, and the aspects of task implementation include presence or absence of planning, the type of planning in pre-task, task rehearsal and a post-task requirement. Currently there is a consensus among language acquisition specialists that what is necessary for the successful development of communicative competence is the output, or language production, coupled with the noticing of the “gaps” in the inter-language system. This general agreement justifies the line of research that analyzes characteristics of learners’ language production and hypothesizes its effect on the underlying inter-language system, on the processes of language acquisition. Task based learning offers a useful framework for operationalization of motivational and cognitive factors. Of all the aspects of task design and implementation, it is the pre-task that offers itself as a very natural and suitable task phase for introducing motivational and cognitive support to the students. It is quite possible for the students to experience problems in the middle of a task and to ask for help. Similarly, post-task clarifications of cognitively challenging moments of the task, as well as praise and encouragement can be crucial for students’ self-belief and further attempts to fulfill similar tasks. However, if the students do not have adequate motivation or cognitive preparation for a task, they will not be able to approach it productively, and time will be wasted in class. 1) performing a task similar to the main task 2) providing the students a model of the “ideal“ performance to observe, with or without accompanying activities 3) non-task preparation activities without access to the task 4) strategic planning with access to the main task. It is the third and the fourth alternatives that are of interest for the present study. A great number of studies investigated the impact of strategic planning on language production, and smaller proportion of studies looked at the impact of different pre-tasks. Earlier studies in strategic planning introduced the students to an oral task, gave them some time to prepare, and then measured the language produced during the task. The results were compared with groups that had no planning time, or had a different amount of planning time. 9 The type of tasks benefited differentially from the preceding planning time, which led to increased accuracy in more structured tasks and increased complexity in less structured tasks that required considerable online processing. 10 The solitary pre-task planning employed in most studies discussed above was preferred to a teacher-led pre-task activity, because the solitary planning was thought to be more controlled, while the teacher-led preparations were judged to be more prone to unexpected variation. However, a concern was raised that during solitary planning, it is hard to say what kind of preparation activities students engage in, and whether such activities are similar across all students. For example, are the students focusing on form or meaning when they are planning for the task? The understanding of the students’ mental activities during strategic preparation is crucial because it arguably affects the subsequent language production during the task. Several studies investigated the processes students engage in while preparing. during the planning time most participants focused on the content and sequencing of events rather than on form. In another investigation of mental processes during strategic planning, English learners to listen to a story in their native language and retell it in the English language under two conditions: without planning time and with 10 minutes of planning prior to retelling. Planning time resulted in increased fluency and complexity of speech, but not in lexical range or accuracy. Retrospective interviews with the participants regarding the strategies they used during planning time revealed that priority was given first to global structural organization and main ideas and then to details, that participants attended both to content and form, and that they planned at the utterance level. In addition, the teacher-fronted and the group-based conditions each consisted of two groups, which differed in the foci of attention during planning: form-focused vs. content-focused. The results showed that solitary planners were more fluent, produced a more complex speech based on longer terms. The students in the group-based condition were less fluent. The no-planners lacked complexity, but otherwise did not differ from other language conditions. 11 And finally, the students in the teacher-fronted condition were more accurate. When they are transformed from the real world to the classroom, tasks become pedagogical in nature. For example, drawing a map while listening to a tape, listening to an instruction and performing a command may be referred to as tasks. Tasks may or may not involve the production of language. Tasks are deﬁned in terms of what the learners will do in class rather than in the world outside the classroom. They also emphasize the importance of having a non-linguistic outcome. Any structured language learning endeavour which has a particular objective, appropriate content, a speciﬁed working procedure, and a range of outcomes for those who undertake the task. ‘Task’ is therefore assumed to refer to a range of work plans which have the overall purposes of facilitating language learning – from the simple and brief exercise type, to more complex and lengthy activities such as group problem-solving or simulations and decision-making. This deﬁnition is very broad, implying as it does that just about anything the learner does in the classroom qualiﬁes as a task. It could, in fact, be used to justify any procedure at all as ‘task-based’ and, as such, is not particularly helpful. More circumscribed is the following from Willis, cited in Willis and Willis: a classroom undertaking ‘where the target language is used by the learner for a communicative purpose in order to achieve an outcome’. Here the notion of meaning is subsumed in ‘outcome’. Language in a communicative task is seen as bringing about an outcome through the exchange of meanings. There is ﬁve key characteristics of a task based learning: • meaning is primary • learners are not given other people’s meaning to regurgitate • there is some sort of relationship to comparable real-world activities • task completion has some priority • the assessment of the task is in terms of outcome. A task is a work plan that requires learners to process language pragmatically in order to achieve an outcome that can be evaluated in terms of whether the correct or appropriate propositional content has been conveyed. To this end, it requires them to give primary attention to meaning and to make use of their own linguistic resources, although the design of the task may predispose them to choose particular forms. A task is intended to result in language use that bears a resemblance, direct or indirect, to the way language is used in the real 17

world. Like other language activities, a task can engage productive or receptive, and oral or written skills and also various cognitive processes. Task based learning is a piece of classroom work that involves learners in comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target language while their attention is focused on mobilizing their grammatical knowledge in order to express meaning, and in which the intention is to convey meaning rather than to manipulate form. The task should also have a sense of completeness, being able to stand alone as a communicative act in its own right with a beginning, a middle and an end. While these di ﬁ nitions vary somewhat, the fact that tasks involve communicative language use in which the user’s attention is focused on meaning rather than grammatical form. This does not mean that form is not important. It refers to the deployment of grammatical knowledge to express meaning, high- lighting the fact that meaning and form are highly interrelated, and that grammar exists to enable the language user to express different communicative meanings. However , tasks differ from grammatical exercises in that learners are free to use a range of language structures to achieve task outcomes the forms are not speci ﬁ ed in advance. 13 The design of a task-based lesson involves consideration of the stages or components of a lesson that has a task as its principal component. Various designs have been proposed. However they all have in common three principal phases, which are shown in Figure 1. These phases reflect the chronology of a task-based lesson. Thus, the first phase is ‘pre-task’ and concerns the various activities that teachers and students can undertake before they start the task, such as whether students are given time to plan the performance of the task. The second phase, the ‘during task’ phase, centres around the task itself and affords various instructional options, including whether students are required to operate under time-pressure or not. task performance. Only the ‘during task’ phase is obligatory in task-based teaching. Thus, minimally, a task-based lesson consists of the students just performing a task. Options selected from the ‘pre-task’ or ‘post-task’ phases are non-obligatory but, as we will see, can serve a crucial role in ensuring that the task performance is maximally effective for language development. Access to a clear framework for a task-based lesson is of obvious advantage to both teachers and learners. Plan your teaching and try to follow your plan on how novice teachers feel the ‘need to be creative and varied in teaching’. It provides a clear structure for a lesson and it also allows for creativity and variety in the choice of options in each phase. The purpose of the pre-task phase is to prepare students to perform the task in ways that will promote acquisition. Lee describes the importance of ‘framing’ the task to be performed and suggests that one way of doing this is to provide an advance organizer of what the students will be required to do and the nature of the outcome they will arrive at. This may be especially important for learners from traditional ‘studial’ classrooms; they may need to be convinced of the value of a more ‘experiential’ approach. Task preparation should involve strategies for whetting students’ appetites to perform the task and for helping them to perform the task. Strategies in this latter category are discussed below. 14 To broad alternatives available to the teacher during the pre-task phase: an emphasis on the general cognitive demands of the task, and/or an emphasis on linguistic factors. Attentional capacity is limited, and it is needed to respond to both linguistic and cognitive demands. These alternatives can be tackled procedurally in one of four ways: 1 ） supporting learners in performing a task similar to the task they will perform in the during-task phase of the lesson, 2 ） asking students to observe a model of how to perform the task, 14 Richards, J. 3 ） engaging learners in non-task activities designed to prepare them to perform the task 4 ） strategic planning of the main task performance. We will consider each in some detail. Performing a similar task It was carried out as a whole-class activity with the teacher and involved the learners in completing a task of the same kind as and with similar content to the main task. Thus, it served as a preparation for performing the main task individually. For example, if the main task involved working out a class timetable from the timetables of individual teachers, then the pre-task would be the same but with different information in the teachers’ timetables. Tasks were conducted through interaction of the question-and-answer type. The teacher was expected to lead the class step-by-step to the expected outcome, to break down a step into smaller steps if the learners encountered difficulty and to offer one or more parallels to a step in the reasoning process to ensure that mixed ability learners could understand what was required. The teacher was provided with a lesson plan that included the pre-task and a set of graded questions or instructions together with parallel questions to be used as needed. When implemented in the classroom, the plan results in a ‘pedagogic dialogue’. The task was not a ‘demonstration’ but ‘a task in its own right’. It is clear from this account that the task serves as a mediational tool for the kind of ‘instructional conversation’ that socio-cultural theorists advocate. 15 The teacher, as an expert, uses the pre-task to scaffold learners’ performance of the task with the expectancy that this ‘other-regulation’ facilitates the ‘self-regulation’ learners will need to perform the main task on their own.  Providing a model 15 Richards, J.C., and Schmidt, R.” Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics” (Third Ed). An alternative is to ask the students to observe a model of how the task can be performed without requiring them to undertake a trial performance of the task. Minimally this involves presenting them with a text to demonstrate an ‘ideal’ performance of the task. Simply ‘observing’ others perform a task can help reduce the cognitive load on the learner. However, the model can also be accompanied by activities designed to raise learners’ consciousness about specific features of the task performance for example, the strategies that can be employed to overcome communication problems, the conversational gambits for holding the floor during a discussion or the pragma-linguistic devices for performing key language functions. Such activities might require the learners to identify and analyze these features in the model texts. Alternatively, they might involve pre-training in the use of specific strategies. Number of learning strategies that students can be taught to help them become ‘adaptable, creative, inventive and above all independent’ and thus more effective performers of a task. However, the effectiveness of such training cannot be taken for granted. Lam and the effects of teaching students to seek and provide clarification when communication difficulties arose in class discussions. However, although this resulted in greater use of these strategies in a post-training discussion, the strategies were often not employed effectively suggesting that pre-task training in the use of communication strategies may not be effective unless students also learn how to scaffold each other cooperatively when performing the task. There is also a danger in directing task training based on a model at specific aspects of language or language use; learners may respond by treating the task they are subsequently asked to perform as an ‘exercise’ for practicing the strategies/features that have been targeted. A key question, then, is the extent to which students are to be primed to attend to specific aspects of the model. Clearly, there is a need to evaluate carefully the effects of any such priming on subsequent task performance. Non-task preparation activities There are a variety of non-task preparation activities that teachers can choose from. These can center on reducing the cognitive or the linguistic demands placed 21

on the learner. Activating learners’ content schemata or providing them with background information serves as a means of defining the topic area of a task. Willis provides a list of activities for achieving this. 16 When learners know what they are going to talk or write about they have more processing space available for formulating the language needed to express their ideas with the result that the quantity of the output will be enhanced and also fluency and complexity. Recommended activities for addressing the linguistic demands of a task often focus on vocabulary rather than grammar, perhaps because vocabulary is seen as more helpful for the successful performance of a task than grammar. Newton suggests three ways in which teachers can target unfamiliar vocabulary in the pre- task phase, predicting , cooperative dictionary search , and words and definitions. Newton argues that such activities will ‘prevent the struggle with new words overtaking other important goals such as fluency or content-learning’ when learners perform the task. However, there is always the danger that pre-teaching vocabulary will result in learners treating the task as an opportunity to practice pre- selected words. In the case of task-supported teaching this can be seen as desirable but in the case of task-based teaching it can threaten the integrity of the task. Strategic planning Finally, learners can be given time to plan how they will perform the task. This involves ‘strategic planning’ and contrasts with the ‘online planning’ that can occur during the performance of the task. It can be distinguished from other pre- task options in that it does not involve students in a trial performance of the task or in observing a model. However, it may involve the provision of linguistic forms/strategies for performing the task. considering the forms they will need to execute the task work plan they have been given. As much as in a so-called traditional, teacher-dominated approach language teaching, the role of the teacher in TBLT is crucial. Teachers bring TBLT to life. They have a pivotal role in planning and designing lesson activities that are tailored to their students’ internal syllabi. They are crucial when it comes to providing target language input and eliciting the kind of language use and form- focus that provides second language learners with optimal opportunities to practice and develop their language skills. By participating in task-based dialogue, they can model target language use and interactionally support their learners. By organizing classroom activity efficiently and motivating their students, they can increase the likelihood that every single student will approach the task in an active way and learn from it. In line with the available research on the impact of the teacher on instructed learning, it could be hypothesized, then, that the quality of TBLT cannot exceed the quality of the teachers working with tasks. Therefore, in research on task-based learning, teachers should receive much more attention. Research needs to highlight the concerns that teachers have with the tasks they are exposed to and are working with. Research needs to document the interaction and the real life in classrooms that tasks give rise to, in an attempt to link them to the instructed language learning that results. Involving teachers as full-blown (action) researchers could be a particularly promisingway of increasing their involvement with TBLT as key agents in the implementation of the approach and, at the same time, allowing them to gain more insight in the exact ways in which they can use and exploit tasks to optimally promote their students’ second language learning. 23

1.2. The role of motivation on task based learning approach. There are very few studies that investigate specific motivational designs in the classrooms. The challenge lies in the highly individualized nature of motivation: what may encourage one learner may not appeal to his/her peer in the class. Also, the effectiveness of a strategy or an instructional activity is not always guaranteed: what may work well today with a given group of learners may not work tomorrow with the same class for various reasons, such as the level of enthusiasm of the teacher, the learners’ mood, learners’ perception of the novelty of the activity/strategy, absence of individual learners and the effect their absence may have on group dynamics. It is important to investigate the role of motivation and cognition in second language acquisition at the micro level, or classroom level. In this regard, task- based methodology offers research as well as methodological advantages: tasks have clearly defined boundaries and are amenable to comparison across various studies, as well as allow for a focused instructional design. Task-based learning has been a viable methodology in language pedagogy and a prominent area in language acquisition research in the past 30 years. Although individual tasks differ in input variables presence or absence of contextual support, number of elements in the task, task conditions, task outcomes, aspects of task implementation, certain common features with predictable effect on language learner L2 production have emerged after years of task-based research. For example, it is known that giving learners planning time prior to engaging in a task leads to higher fluency of speech during the task and greater complexity of speech The important role of output in language acquisition has been one of the main justifications behind the task-based teaching approach. It is based on the premise that output coupled with noticing the “gaps” is necessary for successful SLA. We know that L2 output is necessary for successful language learning, and that good language learners seek opportunities to speak and actively use their language. 24

The quality of oral production has been the main focus of task-based research. Three aspects of output – fluency, accuracy, and complexity – are hypothesized to influence the interlanguage system in different ways. Accuracy is the capacity to handle whatever level of interlanguage complexity the learner has currently attained. Complexity is associated with testing the boundaries of the underlying interlanguage system by attempting to produce new vocabulary and structures that have not been well integrated into the interlanguage system. Fluency is the capacity to mobilize the interlanguage system to communicate meaning in real time. Each of the three aspects of language production is important for language acquisition, and each affects language acquisition in a different way. Knowing the effect of various task variables in learners’ production, teachers can manipulate learners’ attention to the aspects of speech and thus promote the learners’ language acquisition in desirable ways. 17 Task design and implementation variables do not determine but certainly influence language production during the task in terms of learners’ focus on fluency, accuracy, and complexity of their speech, thus contributing to language acquisition. Although advances have been made in understanding the effects of task characteristics on language production, the research needs to continue to uncover o their task characteristics that can have a potentially stable effect on task language production. We began by saying that in the ideal conditions, language learners are cognitively prepared for a particular activity and are highly motivated to engage in this activity. However, learners rarely choose classroom tasks. action. This stage is very important because the degree, or the force, of the initial instigation force determines further action during the actional stage. However, it is possible that by showing the value of an activity and by providing reasons for which the learners may want to engage in this activity, the teacher may compensate for the fact that learners did not have a say in choosing an activity. In fact, providing learners with the value of the task is listed as a motivational strategy in a number of SLA motivational handbooks . The importance of ensuring that learners perceive the task as valuable and useful to them. The effect of some variables in our study appeared to be conditioned on the existence or absence of some others: WTC “willingness to communicate”, need for achievement, and social status had a positive effect only on those learners’ task-engagement who had favourable task attitudes, whereas social status had a negative effect when accompanied by negative task attitudes”. At the same time, there are some basic aspects of motivation that, when fostered, allow individuals to actively engage in an activity. For example, such basic motivational constructs are postulated in the self-determination theory SDT: autonomy, perception of competence, and relatedness. The three constructs have been studied in very versatile contexts and have been found to produce a positive effect on all three factors on individual’s motivations. When human beings find themselves in a situation where such needs are fostered, they behave in a highly efficient and fulfilling manner, or they are intrinsically motivated to act. Thus, a 26

motivational pre-task intervention rooted in the SDT theory may produce an overall positive effect on learners’ attitudes to the task and motivation to engage in the task. The notions of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations central to the SDT theory are well known in the SLA literature. For example, intrinsic motivation is often compared to Gardner’s integrative motivation, even though the latter is rooted in a social psychology approach and is associated with positive attitudes to members of the target language community. In contrast, an intrinsically motivated learner, as conceptualized in SDT, engages in a learning activity for the joy and other positive emotions that this activity brings. Extrinsic motivation is treated as a unitary concept in SLA: an extrinsically motivated learner engages in an activity in order to obtain some external gain or reward. SDT also conceptualized extrinsic motivation as stemming from an externally perceived motive, but at the same time it distinguishes between four different degrees of extrinsic motivation, from clearly extrinsic to gradually more integrated into the one’s own self. This most integrative kind of extrinsic motivation has a lot in common with the intrinsic motivation. For example, even though the need to speak a foreign language in order to become an educated person may initially be suggested by the demands and conditions of the world external to us, with time this need may become so integrated into one’s system of values that a person may perceive the need is as one’s own, stemming from one’s own self. The integrated motivation appears to be more relevant in the adult world where most activities are not chosen for their intrinsically motivating appeal but are rather chosen on the basis of their value to the individual. Given the importance of motivational factors in task engagement and the need to foster motivation in the classroom, this study investigates a specific motivational intervention designed to increase the pre-task impetus for task engagement. The motivational pre-task will precede the oral production task and will present the task to the learners as an intrinsically motivating and interesting activity. The pre-task will emphasize the value of the oral production task as an activity purposefully 27

designed to т help the learners achieve their goals of becoming fluent in the foreign language. The question is whether learners who will receive such motivational intervention will produce a more accurate, fluent, or complex speech, as well as a larger amount of speech when compared to the learners in the control group, who will not receive such intervention. CHAPTER II. PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF USING CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: THE ROLE OF A TEACHER IN TASK-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING 2.1. Implementation of the classroom management: the role of a teacher in task-based language teaching During the implementation of Task Based Instruction, different strengths were identified at the moment of conducting the lesson throughout the classes. Something that worked in terms of classroom management during the pre-task, task and post-task stages was the facilitator’s voice projection when introducing the topics for the lessons in which task based was implemented. When the teacher was presenting the topics, elicitation was constantly used in order to activate learners’ schemata; moreover, at the moment of eliciting students the facilitator adopted the position of prompter, since the teacher encouraged students to participate and make suggestions about how students may proceed in an activity. Something that facilitated the implementation was the acoustic of the classroom as it has no windows and the door was most of the time closed. For example, in the case related to the parts of the face the teacher asked “what can we do with the eyes? Some students responded: we see objects” in order to check for understanding, also the facilitator moved around the classroom to make sure that all of them were listening. This result is supported by Harmer 19 , who explains that is not needed for teachers to raise the voice in the classroom, supporting this 19 Harmer, J. (2007). idea; we have learned that a good voice projection keeps students focused in what is being said by the teacher, even though the teacher moves around the classroom. These results contributed in the practitioners’ professional development on the grounds that the practitioners reflected that at Elementary School the voice projection and paralinguistic features are useful characteristics that foster students’ attention in the lesson also what the teacher is conveying . On the grounds that, we Could identify that paralinguistic features are useful for those students who do not understand some expressions in the target language because they found it complex. Another aspect that worked during the implementation of the task based instructions was the body language in the English classes, since learners understood the movements of the teacher which supported what he was conveying. For example, the teacher used body language and mimics to introduce the topic referred to moods in order to make students understand the meaning of the vocabulary presented in the flashcards. Therefore, in a class dealing with the topic moods and emotions, the teacher used paralinguistic features; for instance, sad, happy, bored and excited for students to be contextualized and have a better association among what the teacher said and what they looked. Example, the teacher asked students “when something is not going well how do you feel?” (the teacher showed a sad face and learners pronounced the word ” sad ” ) as another example, some students were asked to show to the teacher some flashcards for him to represent that face using moods and facial expressions so as to students have the opportunity to guess which emotion was the teacher representing. Additionally, body language, intonation and facial expressions were elements that helped learners to recognize what the interlocutor was saying in the discourse. With the use of all these features, young language learners grasp the meaning or the main idea of the message that was conveyed by the teacher in the language sessions, for instance, in the pre-task stage in which the topic was related to the parts of the body it was noticed that learners achieved the aim of the task, and this 29

could be observed when presenting the students with the vocabulary related to this topic, they associated the gestures made by the teacher with the purpose of understanding the words that the teacher pronounced supported by his body language. For this reason, when the practitioner asked, “what is the mouth used for? The students responded “We eat food with our mouths”. This result is supported by Halliwell 20 states that “very young children are able to understand what is being said to them even before they understand the individual words. Intonation, gestures, facial expressions, actions and circumstances all help to tell them what the unknown words and phrases probably mean” during the implementation of this strategy, the practitioner highlighted the words accompanied by body gestures facilitating the students to understand the discourse, we learned that this strategy allows the students to have a meaningful progress during the classes. Giving instructions was another positive aspect which was effective due to the fact that the facilitator implemented different features like body language, mimic and face gestures so that students could have a better understanding. Additionally, the facilitator used commonly a checking understanding method in which the teacher asked any student to repeat what they have to do during a specific task. For example, the teacher asks one of the students to utter the rest of the class what he has already explained. This result is supported by Ur 21 , she defines instructions as "the directions that are given to introduce a leaning task which entails some measure of independent student activity ". In agreement with the author’s idea, it is important to mention that the instructions were steps that students followed to perform a task. Other strength observes during the implementation was recognizing students on view of the fact that it was really important aspect in order to maintain the natural flow of the class due to the fact that by knowing the students’ names the 20 Halliwell, S. facilitator could control in some cases the students’ misbehavior. The recognition of the learners provided the teacher the opportunity to call the students´ attention; for example, student A who was one of the most undisciplined students was asked to be quiet while giving instructions also not to stand up from his chair or if he was already stood the facilitator asked him appropriately to sit down. For example, the teacher used the words “student A can you please have a seat or sit down and start working on the task” to support this idea, Harmer 22 states that “students want their teacher to recognize them. They also like when the facilitator knows who they are in the classroom”. During the implementation some misbehavior was evidenced, but when calling attention to the students by saying their names they recognize that the teacher is the authority in the classroom. In the implementation of task based instructions I plan the lessons supported by the Task-based Instruction, in which I take into account the specific and general standards, the grade being taught and the students’ needs in relation to what they like. In addition, the procedure was implemented in which the classes were divided in Pre-task, task and post-task stages all this for students to have a coherent learning process. In terms of lesson planning school’s resources were taken into account since lesson were always planned using them so as to engage students during the lessons. The TV and speakers played a fundamental part in the design of the lessons due to; it helped me to focus the learner’s attention in the lesson, as they had the opportunity to have colourful power point presentations, songs, images and videos using these helpful resources. On the other hand, when planning the lessons teachers have to, most of the times, to adapt the material and it is really hard on the grounds that adapting material is time consuming. During the implementation teachers have to create PowerPoint presentations, make and color drawings and create shapes from cardboard, adapting these kind of materials takes a lot of time on the grounds that 22 Harmer, J. it has to be designed according to the students interests and we as practitioners have to plan classes according to the student’s necessities and also the material used in the classes have to be interesting for them. Based on some of the information collected by teachers during the implementation, it was acknowledged that enthusiasm and motivation played an important role regarding the students’ attitudes toward the English lessons. During the implementation, in most of the lessons the practitioners ask some volunteers to participate in the activities and they were too motivated that all of them want to participate at the same time. For this reason, the facilitator uses the list as a strategy to choose randomly some students to participate in the activities. We learn from this aspect that, the teacher has to be inclusive and in different moments of the class has to take into account all the students for them to participate in the activities; because if it is not done in this way they will feel excluded and will not participate anymore. On the other hand, it has to be mentioned that the time allotted during the teaching practices was not as much as we as teachers expected, on the grounds that student were exposed to the target language just three hours per week; and the time in which learners are exposed to the L2 has to be taken in to account, if children are exposed to the L2 in the same way as they are exposed to the L1, greater success will be achieved. The implementation of some strategies will be carried out in the classroom in order to success in our student’s comprehension and understanding of the topics that will be taken in the course. Active Teaching Strategy which refers to the level of academic student engagement in and out of the classroom. According to Richards and Rodgers 23 Active Learning Strategies and Learning activities describes that second language teachers use teaching strategies as structures, techniques, methods, processes and procedures with the purpose of giving 23 Richards, J., & Rodgers, T. academic instruction to the language users. Being consistent with what the author has mentioned teachers used the Think-Pair-Share technique which can be implemented in a variety of topics including values and in a lot of classroom situations, in which students have to move from the first stage that is think about an specific topic given in class, then turn to their classmates for a short discussion and finally share the results for the rest of the class. Equally important, are the learning and teaching activities in TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) which focus on the use of the authentic language through meaningful tasks such as visiting the doctor, a telephone call, jigsaw tasks, information-gap tasks, among others. The aim of these activities based on the task is to encourage students to use the target language creatively and spontaneously for problem solving in the real world. To support this fact, Nunan 24 distinguishes between real world and target language tasks, which are communicative goals that we achieve through language in the world outside the classroom. According to this author learners establish a connection of the real word elements with the new language they are learning. For this reason, these teaching techniques are intended to make the student active rather than passive participants in learning the social language abilities (e.g., communication) many individuals learn better and become proficient in the language competences by practicing the communicative skills rather than merely being a spectator to the skill, such as listening to the teacher talk about the skill, reading about the skill or watching other perform the expertise. In the execution of our classroom project, the pre-service teacher used materials to illustrate the topic in a better way such as: images, flash cards,handouts, worksheets and videos that are related to the language teaching topic, also a laptop, two speakers and a LCD TV set were used by the facilitator to play the video at the beginning of the class. values in those stories. In addition to these activities role-plays performed by the learners will be shown in the learning environment; thus, the images and the flash cards were used by the teacher in order to activate the learners’ assumed knowledge and the cultural background related to the topic. In the same manner, the handouts and the worksheets were distributed in pairs or groups to perform the active and study stages where learners are supposed to practice and produce language. With the use of all these features, young language learners grasp the meaning or the main idea of the message that was conveyed by the teacher in the language sessions, for instance, in the pre-task stage in which the topic was related to the parts of the body it was noticed that learners achieved the aim of the task, and this could be observed when presenting the students with the vocabulary related to this topic, they associated the gestures made by the teacher with the purpose of understanding the words that the teacher pronounced supported by his body language. For this reason, when the practitioner asked, “what is the mouth used for? The students responded “parahablar, para comer, parareir”. This result is 35

supported by Halliwell 26 states that “very young children are able to understand what is being said to them even before they understand the individual words. Intonation, gestures, facial expressions, actions and circumstances all help to tell them what the unknown words and phrases probably mean” during the implementation of this strategy, the practitioner highlighted the words accompanied by body gestures facilitating the students to understand the discourse, we learned that this strategy allows the students to have a meaningful progress during the classes. Giving instructions was another positive aspect which was effective due to the fact that the facilitator implemented different features like body language, mimic and face gestures so that students could have a better understanding. Additionally, the facilitator used commonly a checking understanding method in which the teacher asked any student to repeat what they have to do during a specific task. For example, the teacher asked one of the students to utter the rest of the class what he has already explained. This result is supported by Ur 27 , she defines instructions as "the directions that are given to introduce a leaning task which entails some measure of independent student activity ". In agreement with the author’s idea, it is important to mention that the instructions were steps that students followed to perform a task. Other strength observed during the implementation was recognizing students on view of the fact that it was really important aspect in order to maintain the natural flow of the class due to the fact that by knowing the students’ names the facilitator could control in some cases the students’ misbehavior. The recognition of the learners provided the teacher the opportunity to call the students´ attention; for example, student A who was one of the most undisciplined students was asked to be quiet while giving instructions also not to stand up from his chair or if he was already stood the facilitator asked him appropriately to sit down. 26 Halliwell, S. For example, the teacher used the words “student A can you please have a seat or sit down and start working on the task” to support this idea, Harmer 28 states that “students want their teacher to recognize them. They also like when the facilitator knows who they are in the classroom”. During the implementation some misbehavior was evidenced, but when calling attention to the students by saying their names they recognize that the teacher is the authority in the classroom. Task- based language teaching includes not only a re-examination of what aspects of language to teach but also a shift in emphasis on how to teach! The most important ways of learning a language connectes with the method of Communicative Language Teaching. This project aimed to find out successful ways of teaching a language . Also, using small group activities, discussions and games. Working in a small group discussions students increase their interest by quick pace of collaborative work and improve their critical thinking ability. In my context I have used small group activities like debuted- discussions, rainbow vocabulary. While learning theoretical base of using group working activities on vocabulary learning I came up with the beneficial features of this activities that students learn that success depends on working together inter dependently, students develop social skills by working together. Also, students together have opportunities to reflect the success of the work and its effectiveness. Motivation was regarded as the main positive aspect of the student’s responses as the pre-service teacher implemented some strategies related to the lesson, we could evidence that the teaching-learning process was easier as the students were able to learn. Additionally, students had the sufficient input to perform well in the classes. On the other hand, power point presentations were implemented in most of the classes with the aim of the students to have the opportunity to watch videos, sing, and see colorful images. In addition, using this kind of material increased student’s motivation as cartoons, videos and songs of their interest were used. for the materials used in class; persistence with the learning task, as indicated by levels of attention or action for an extended duration; and levels of concentration and enjoyment. Learners enthusiastically participated in class showing interest in learning a foreign language. They looked happy and eager to participate giving their opinions about the topic and raised their hands to ask for the meaning of a word. At the beginning of the classes the students showed their happiness when they saw the English teacher arriving to the class, for example, students welcomed the teacher in kind a manner, Student B ¨hello teacher ¨ while shaking hands. In addition, they were highly motivated during the warming-up activities since they really like kinesthetic activities like songs or any type of games before the language session begins. We learned that students with high levels of motivation are willing to perform the tasks and have better alternatives of approaching the input and display positive outcomes. We also learned that students showed a greater sense of enthusiasm since the practitioner elicited information implementing a wide variety of visual materials, given that for them the visual aids are remarkable on the grounds that it catches their attention span. By creating a friendly atmosphere that encourage social interaction within a group, we allow students to become more comfortable in small group discussions This gave students more confidence and these began to participate actively in class discussions. I allowed students the freedom to discuss the ideas in class discussions openly without raising hands for permission to speak. Students became more tolerant to each other’s ideas and began to respect each other. Very shy students also began to participate in activities, because they self-more comfortable to speak to their partners rather than to teachers. Students were eager to speak because in small groups they all had an opportunity to speak and they were happy to be listened by others. Small group works usually involve different types of social context. Regarding the learners’ linguistic outcomes during the implementation, it was observed the collaborative learning among students in circumstances when the 38

practitioner used the English language to communicate with the learners; in most of the cases it was evidenced that some of the students did not understand some words or expressions, for this reason, some students with higher level of understanding assisted those learners helping them with the meaning of what was said by the practitioner;for instance, in the lesson referred to the basic colors , the teacher told a student to color a butterfly using different colors such as: red, yellow, green and blue, at this point collaborative learning was evidenced in as much as those who did not get the message at the very beginning were helped by their classmates. In addition, tests results showed that was an instrument used to measure the learner´s knowledge during the implementation of the classroom project; not to mention, the results were useful indicators that contributed to identify the students’ weaknesses in some topics; at the same time, the outcomes made us reflect on the reason why learners obtained unsatisfactory results in the tests, also how to reinforce these failures, we concluded that some learners were not used to recognize the meaning of all the words conveyed by the teacher during the lessons; for these reason, as a strategy the facilitator implemented more the checking understanding to lessen this situation in the language sessions. Alternatively, the use of videos and songs to expose the primary learners to native voices showed positive results due to the fact that songs are considered pedagogical tools that help the students to improve their listening skills and pronunciation of the words . Given that, the content of the videos the rhythm and melody of the songs were attractive for the scholars; as a result, in the second class referred to greetings the teacher played the “hello” song which contains common expressions, and after the students chanted it three times they pronounced the words “good, fine, great” and the expression how are you? Correctly .We concluded that the use of multimedia during the implementation helped the teacher to engage the students with the topics. For example, it was evidenced that in the coming classes the students started to use those expressions to greet the practitioner, in this manner we could evidence that they were learning to use the target language. 39

On the other hand, it has to be mentioned that the time allotted during the teaching practices was not as much as we as teachers expected, on the grounds that student were exposed to the target language just three hours per week; and the time in which learners are exposed to the L2 has to be taken in to account, if children are exposed to the L2 in the same way as they are exposed to the L1, greater success will be achieved. And the amount of exposure to the target language that lear 40

2. 2. The components of the TBL The task-based learning framework basically consists of three phases; pretask, task cycle and language focus. The pre-task phase introduces the class to the topic and task by activating topic-related words and phrases. The task cycle offers learners the chance to use whatever language they already know in order to carry out the task, and then to improve that language. Exposure to language can be provided at different stages, depending on the type of task. The last phase in the framework, language focus, allows a closer study of some of the specific features naturally occuring in the language used during the task cycle. It includes analysis and practice components and serves the purpose most PPP concepts rely on explicit study of language form.The components within each phase of the framework provide a naturallyflowing sequence, each one preparing the ground for the next. Let us now take a closer look at each of the individual steps of a task- based learning cycle. The pre-task phase is usually the shortest stage in the framework. It can last between two and twenty minutes, depending on the learners' familiarity with the topic and the type of task. At first, learners have to be given a definition of the topic area. They may,especially if they come from other cultures, hold different views on what some topics are about. To make the learners then ready for the task, words and phrases that might be useful have to be recalled. This can be done in a number of ways.According to pre-task activities topic language "should actively involve all learners, giving them relevant exposure, and create interest in doing a task on this topic" . One way of doing this is by classifying words and phrases connected with the topic. Playing "Odd one out", where an item that does not fit in a set of related words or phrases has to be found, or matching phrases to pictures are also useful techniques. In some classes, drawing mind-maps might help learners to become familiar with the topic area. The third step in the pre-task phase is to ensure that all learners understand what the task involves, what its goals are and what outcome is required. Apart from mere explaining the task, the teacher can 41

show the class what previous learners have achieved or demonstrate the task with a good learner. The task – cycle . After working hard to set the scene in the introduction phase, the teacher now in the task stage acts as an observer monitoring what is going on in the classroom and acts as a time keeper. He should make sure that all groups are doing the right task and that really all the learners take part. As a passive observer, he ought to be forgiving about errors of form and should only interrupt and help if there is a major communication break-down. Task component helps learners to develop fluency in the target language and strategies for communcation. The main focus lays on the meaning which has to be conveyed. Through tasks, learners may well become better communicators and learn new words and phrases but it is often argued that this does not necessarily streches the learners' language development or help with internalisation of grammar. This is supplied by the report stage, where learners naturally aim for accuracy and fluency. It gives them a natural stimulus to upgrade and improve their language. In fact, it is a real linguistic challenge - namely to communicate clearly and in accurate language appropriate to the circumstances. In the task phase, when they speak in real time, learners just tack words and phrases together in a more or less improvised fashion. In planning their report, in contrast, they have to create a comprehensive and compact summary of what has happened with the support of their group, the teacher, dictionaries and grammar books. The teacher's main role now is that of a language adviser, helping learners to shape their meanings and to express exactly what they want to say. He ought to comment on good points and creative use of language and should, if learners ask to be corrected, point out errors selectively - most important are those which obscure the meaning. For other errors of form, learners should try to correct each other. 42

The report stage, Willis 29 points out, then probably presents "slightly less of a learning opportunity than the planning stage". But without the report, the learning process of planning, drafting and rehearsing would not happen. Learners naturally feel curious what their colleagues have achieved during the task and actively join in the report stage. A report might last as little as 30 secondes or up to two minutes. Of course, also the reports are bound to strange wordings and grammatical errors. What must be taken into consideration, however, is that learners here offer the best language they can achieve at that moment, given the linguistic resources and time available. During the report stage, the teacher acts as a chairperson, introducing the presentations, deciding who speaks next and summing up at the end. He ought to keep an eye on the time and stop the report stage when it becomes repetetive. Giving reports can be done orally or by writing. Audio and video presentations can be included and a number of media should be used to make the reports as interesting and vital as possible. If feedback is given by the teacher, it should be tactfully and positively. Whenever possible, learners ought to be encouraged to find out mistakes by themselves. This can be done by little quizzes and guessing games, noting the respective phrases on the blackboard but leaving a gap where the mistake occured. Learners then should complete the phrase in order to make it correct. Language focus. Within the task-based learning framework, tasks and texts give learners a rich exposure to language and also opportunities to use it themselves. In addition to that, they also benefit from instruction focused on language form. This is not necessarily teacher-led, although the teacher mostly introduces the activities, is on hand while learners do them and reviews them in the end. The activities mentioned above are sometimes called "consciousness raising activities" or "meta-communicative tasks". These are tasks that focus explicitly on language form and use, an aspect that is normally covered first in traditional language teaching. should not, as Willis writes, "consist of decontextualised presentation and practice of language items in isolation" . By following the task cycle, they rather involve learners in a study of those language forms they actually used and needed during the cycle. Analysis activities give learners time to systematise and build on the grammar they know already, to make and test assumptions about the grammar and to increase their repertoire of useful lexical items. While learners test their own hypothesis and make their own discoveries, the teacher should hold back but ought to be ready to handle individual questions. In reviewing the material they have been exposed to and the language they have used, learners not necessarily notice the same aspects as the teacher but rather pick out things that are new to them and they can fit into their own developing picture of the target language. There are three main starting points for analysis activities: semantic concepts, words or parts of a word and categories of meaning or use. Of course, the teacher has to set certain guidelines where the learners' investigation should be leading to. Starting points that will catch the right kind of samples to stimulate a deeper investigation into grammar and meaning have been proven useful. Looking for had in a text, for example, will lead learners to verb phrases with had and help them explore the use and meaning of the past perfect. The main themes in a text or transcript are revealed in the lexis. In analyzing semantic concepts, identifying the theme words and phrases helps learners to notice lexical repetition and how this can form cohesive through the text. These words or phrases can also be used for categorising, for exploring shades of meaning and finally building up lexical sets. Analysis tasks staring from words or parts of words can involve learners in classification according to grammatical function, exploring the meaning and effects of alternative choices of form, exploring collocation or classification according to meaning and use. Learners might also want to collect similar examples from their previous knowledge or from a dictionary. Working on categories of meaning or use mostly consists of concordance analysis. Learners are asked to find phrases or verbsith a specific form that serve a specific function. 44

They might be asked, for example, to find all phrases with verbs ending in -ing , which describe someone or something, which follow is / was / are / were or which follow verbs like stop and start . If there are any constructions left over, learners could try to classify them as well. Once most learners have finished the activity, the results are discussed in class. When presenting their findings, learners should be asked to explain their reasons for classifying an example in a particular way. When the review is completed, further examples that fit in these categories can be added to the list. The teacher may also focus on other useful words or collocations that occur, always based on the linguistic material provided by the task cycle. In the course of the analysis activities, learners practise saying target words and phrases and hear them repeated in different contexts. Practise activities can combine naturally with analysis work. On their own, they are unlikely to give learners deeper insights into the meaning and use of grammatical patterns or speed up their acquisition of these patterns. In connection with analysis work, however, they serve a valuable function and provide confidence and a sense of security. Language practise activities start with mere repletion and listen-and-complete exercises and can reach up to memory challenge tasks and concordance and dictionary exercises. The teacher's creativity here is, of course, unlimited. One of the most important requirements for designing effective writing tasks is to think of coherent, connected activity sets, which include pre-writing, duringwriting and post-writing activities. Connected activity sets help students complete the writing task successfully and foster the process of writing. Working backwards from the final task makes it easier to design such activity sets. Only by viewing writing in the broader context of activity sets can you ensure that writing is taught as a process, with brainstorming, several writing and rewriting tasks, and active revision. While the activity sets are presented here in chronological sequence for clarity, during actual writing, there is much recursively among the steps. 1. Pre-writing activities prepare learners for a final writing task and activate, review or build sub-skills that prepare the learner for completing the main 45

writing task. They usually focus on the audience, the content, and the vocabulary necessary for the task. These are typically word and phrase level activities. 2. During-writing activities engage learners in recursive writing, self- editing and revisions. As the students are guided through writing and re-writing, the teacher should guide them through other areas such as syntax. 3. Post-writing activities help learners reflect on and revise their writing based on feedback from an audience, such as peers and/or an instructor. Pre- writing tasks review and build students' knowledge of relevant vocabulary, relevant grammar points and, most importantly, students' background knowledge, since that is what really generates thoughtful and interesting written work. Pre- writing tasks are a crucial element of successful writing instruction. Pre-writing activities may take many different forms. Here we review a few effective ways to get the writing process started: associograms, prompts,interviews, and reading/listening activities . A well chosen picture or song can foster the learner's creativity. A few questions in addition to the picture can really help ideas flow. Written prompts can help students hypothesize what is going on in the picture and generate interesting content. These prompts can be provided by the instructor or generated through brainstorming by the students. They can follow the Five W s and the H from journalism: who, what, when, where, why and how): Interviews can serve to generate ideas for writing and move learners beyond their own experiences. It usually works best when some of the questions (using the 5 W s and 1 H ) are unexpected or "hook" students' interests. Before you watch the video, make a quick list of a few potential problems associated with using interviews and also several positive outcomes of interview type activities as a pre-writing activity. When language learners respond to texts, whether written or oral, they can learn new vocabulary, expressions, grammatical structures, and valuable pragmatic information (e.g., how to structure an e-mail, a movie review, etc.). Below is an example of a reading-based pre-writing activity that leads to students writing their own greeting cards. The questions 46

accompanying this model birthday card should lead the students to notice relevant expressions, rhetorical structure, grammar, content, greetings, etc. During- the Writing . Once students are ready to write, they need clear instructions and resources to complete the next steps in the process: writing drafts, revising, self-editing, expanding. Students should be allowed to use notes they generated from the pre-writing tasks. Decide also whether they may use a dictionary or spell-checker, and what you expect them to do for this activity. Ensure that your pedagogical objectives align with the actual activity you assign your students. You will write a short story that tells your reader about your latest winter vacation. It will describe in some detail - the more interesting the better - what you did, where, and how it went. After you are finished composing your short story, make sure to re-read your story and run through the self-editing checklist! In the meantime, follow these steps to begin your masterpiece! • Write a paragraph that explains a) where the story takes place, b) who was there, and c) what was the funny event that happened. • Write 2-3 paragraphs a) about what happened before, during and after this event or b) add descriptions of the main characters that explain why this event was funny. • Provide details that make the story interesting for your reader (make sure theywant to read it!). • Start with a hook, have a clear beginning, middle and end (a complete story ) in your narrative. • Add phrases to make the story flow smoothly (cohesion markers, pronouns, conjunctions) • Eliminate "fluff" (unnecessary or redundant details) • Review your story for fluidity, vocabulary, grammar, style and mechanics Post-Writing. We define post-writing as the step in the writing process where the written text is shared with other audiences, such as a peer-editor or the instructor or even with the general public. The basic components of post-writing activities: · Re-read your story, make sure sentences make sense. 47

· Add phrases to make the story flow smoothly (cohesion markers, pronouns, conjunctions). · Eliminate "fluff" (unnecessary or redundant details). · Proofread for spelling, vocabulary, grammar (checklist). · Edit your paper (peer-editing, post-teacher editing). · Share with audience (website, print, etc.). Publishing is optional and should be understood in the broadest sense of the word: sharing the author's written work with multiple readers or even viewers. Here are a few ideas for making student work public. Publishing in written format: · an online blog · a wiki entry · a printed or online class newspaper/newsletter · a collection of poetry, short stor,y or mixed-genre writing Publishing (Presentation) in oral format: · filming a news report · filming or producing a skit · producing a theater play or variety show, either for just the class or for a larger audience (long-term writing assignments) · poetry reading Publishing or presenting written work can help focus learners' attention and motivation for writing: there is a real, legitimate communicative purpose for their work. It is quite common now that when some of us teachers design the tasks for teaching a lesson, the tasks lose their “taskness”. They become more like exercising focusing on discrete aspects of language. And indeed, many of the socalled tasks don’t satisfy the definition of a task. For example, most of the listening teaching is designed like this, Pre-listening Presenting some words and ask students to read and learn first. Teachers may give the definition of the new words. 48

While-listening: Teachers play the tape for the students to listen for the 1st time, students listen and get the general idea. And then play the 2nd time, design some True or False or Wh-questions to help students to get the detailed information. Then teachers check the answers. Post-listening Teachers ask students to retell what they have heard and check again. It is quite doubted that whether these activities or steps should be called “tasks”? I think both teachers and students will feel dull and bored by doing these asking, answering, and checking. So in addition to design what type of task to include in a lesson, we teachers need to make decisions about what students will be asked to communicate about and what skills or abilities the students need to be trained through the task. Thus, a key element in the design of the task must be to the choice of thematic content. Now the syllabus of the textbook we are using is developed for the Communicational Teaching Project. Many of the tasks included are built around the themes that are directly related to the students’ school or social life that they’re expected to be familiar with. Now what I’m interested in and also more concerned about is how we teachers put those wonderful tasks into practice in each individual lessons, making students learn and fulfill those tasks through carrying out the effective activities designed by the teachers. Now I would like to use the framework for designing the task-based lessons and my teaching experience to demonstrate my ideas. The task of the lesson is to listen to a conversation between an interviewer and a journalist about the danger of taking drugs and ask students to do a report and make another interview to realize the relation between drugs and crimes and call on them to stay away from drugs. It is designed as follows: The Pre-task phrase: The purpose is to prepare the students to perform the task in ways that will promote acquisition. We know it is very important to present a task in a way that motivate learners. There are some alternatives which can be tackled procedures in one of the 4 ways below: 1) supporting students in performing a task similar to the task they will perform in the during task phase of the lesson. 49

2) Asking students to observe a model of how to perform the task. 3) Engaging students to non-task activities designed to prepare them to perform the task. 4) Strategic planning of the main task performance. Activity 1: Present a story with the new words by reviewing the text taught in the previous lesson, make the words related to each other and let students guess what the topic might be in this lesson. break the house --------burglary ------- break the law drug addict (criminal)-------illegal.----crime break into the shopping centers----- shoplifting. This is designed to raise learners’ consciousness about specific features of task performance. It concludes some learning strategies, eg. “learning to live with uncertainty” and ”learning to make intelligent guesses”. Thus, students can be taught to help become adaptable, creative and inventive. Activity 2: Listen to the tape ---the conversation between an interviewer and a professor, talking about the danger of drugs and related crimes. It seems to be a sort of exercise for listening comprehension , but it provides a model as well. Through this activity, students are asked to observe a model of how the task can be performed .Students can be trained by doing the practice in listening, but also get idea about the “ideal” performance of the task, just suggest that simply “observing” others perform a task can help the cognitive load on the learners. Then students are required to pay attention to how the speakers keep their conversations going and some key points, which helps students to identify and analyse the features in the model text and help overcome some communication problems as well. Activity 3: Ask students to find out the key points that two speakers use in their conversation and how they use them. Then the students can be given time to plan how they’ll perform the task. The strategic planning may involve the provision of linguistic forms / strategies for performing the task. The teachers may provide some guidance. 50

The guidance may focus students’ attention on form or content. Learners need to be made explicitly aware of where they are focusing their attention--- whether on fluency, complexity or accuracy. Another option concerns the amount of time students are given to carry out the pre-task planning. General speaking, 10---15 minutes is quite suitable. The during-task phrase: The methodological option available to the teachers in the during-task phrase are of two basic kinds. First, there are various options relating to how the task is to be undertaken that can be taken prior to the actual performance of the task and thus planned for by the teacher. These will be called “task performance options”. Second, there are a number of “process options” that involve the teacher and students in online decision making about how to perform the task as it is being completed. Activity 4: Group work. Teacher set the task to the students. Each group acts a role according to the request below and think and discuss---what questions you may ask and how you will answer and this activity can create the information gap between students. Group A act as interviewers (journalists from the local TV station) Group B act as professor who has done research on the drugs and crimes for about 10 years. Group C act as drug addict who has taken drugs for 3 years and now has put into prison for committing crimes. Group D act as police officer who has been dealing with the crime related to drugs for 5 years. When the task performance is being carried out, the following 3 things should be put into consideration: 1 whether to require the students to perform the task under time pressure. 2 whether to allow students access to the input data while they perform the task. 3 whether to introduce some surprise element into the task. We teachers need to ensure that students can complete the task in their own time and then set a time limit to encourage fluency rather than accuracy. When students are carrying out the task, we teachers should allow students to 51

borrow the useful related information from the input data to encourage students’ participation in the task, especially for those poor learners, especially when they feel speechless. And of course, while discussing, some unexpected questions and answers will come up, for the students’ imagination and creativity have been greatly motivated.And it may help to enhance the students’ intrinsic interest in the task. On the other hand, achieving the processes during the task is quite challenging. It depends on how the participants orientate to the task and on their personal skills in navigating the roles of interlocutor / language users and instructor/ learners as the task is performed. The post-task phrase : This post-task phase affords a number of options. These have three major pedagogic goals: 1 ) to provide an opportunity for a repeat performance of the task 2) to encourage reflection on how the task was performed 3) to encourage attention to form, in particular to those forms that proved problematic to the learners when they performed the task. Activity 5: After the students have a heated and exciting discussion two students are chosen from Group A to be the TV presenters to arrange for an interview for the program named “Tell as it is”. Remind them to be aware of the what TV presenters should say at the beginning of the program and the skill of asking questions and ask the questions to the right people. Later, ask them to interview any other students who act as professors, police officers, and drug addicts according to their own wills. And other students are asked to give the proper response according to the roles they play. It is known that when students repeat a task their production improves a lot when they’re told to repeat the task publicly in front of the class, of course, it may increase the communicative stress, but it gives students an opportunity to show their ability and their wonderful work, through which they can get the self achievement. 52

Activity 6: Evaluation: Hand out the questionnaire and let students ask themselves the given questions to evaluate their own performance of the task and the task itself. Evaluation about your performance in class. Make your marks out of ten " How attentive were you? " How much did you contribute to the lesson? " How much did you learn? " How much did you co-operate with your group members? And what’s more, if time permits, before the end of the class, teachers should select forms that students used incorrectly while performing the task or “useful ” or ”natural” forms that students failed to use at all. As the post –task stage is needed to counter the danger that students will develop fluency at the expense of accuracy. 53

2. 3 Different types of tasks The kind of language learners are exposed to during the task circle can come from a number of sources. We want analyzed, the most important ones.Text- based tasks require learners to process a text, any piece of spoken or written continuous speech, for meaning in order to achieve the goals of the task. This primarily involves reading, listening to or viewing the text with some kind of communicative purpose", as Willis points out , and may also involve talking about the text or perhaps writing notes. Many teachers use supplementary materials in their lessons since the language found in some coursebooks is restricted and simplified. These have to be chosen, however, with due regard both for the language and the learner. Most learners have their favourite topics or specialist areas. Extra motivation can be achieved when the teacher chooses supplementary material reflecting the learners' interests. Texts can be found in a variety of sources. Continuous spoken language used in the classroom would normally come from professionally made radio or TV programmes. Some sources, like the BBC World Service, are aware of the fact that their audiences are non-native speakers of English and adapt the language they use in a natural way. According to Willis, such an adaptation can still be called "authentic", because it has not been produced "with a specific-language teaching purpose in mind, but mainly to communicate, inform and/or entertain" . When turning to written language, one has to distinguish between published and unpublished sources. Published sources are books, newspapers or magazines, unpublished sources would include for example letters from pen-friends and data collected by learners doing specialist project work. Nowadays, also the Internet is becoming a useful resource. A whole range of text- types is available, most of the material being spontaneous, unedited and available without charge. As always in task-based learning, it is also important in the case of reading tasks to give learners a specific purpose for what they are doing. Unless learners are given a specific purpose for reading, they see the text as a decontextualized learning device and read one word at a time, looking up all the words they do not understand. They should, in contrast, work out which words 54

belong together and form units of meaning. This can only be achieved when reading for meaning is promoted. Learners have to get used to the idea that reading for partial or approximate comprehension is much more useful than aiming at perfect understanding each time. Listening to the radio or watching TV is slightly different from reading in the sense that these activities have to be done in real time and in sequence. This can be a problem in lessons since some learners tend to panic, then get left behind and finally give up. Carefully designed tasks on well- chosen texts can prevent this happening. It is important to encourage learners to listen to the source, predict and make guesses about meanings without penalising wrong ones. Text-based tasks cover a variety of different tasks. In predicting tasks, for example, learners predict or attempt to reconstruct the content of a text on the basis of given clues from part of it, without having read, heard or seen the whole. In jumbles, learners are confronted with sections of parts of a complete text, but in the wrong order. It is the learners' job to rearrange these sections. Other useful exercises are restoration tasks, where learners replace words or phrases that have been omitted from a text, or identify an extra sentence or paragraph that has been put in. In jigsaw tasks, the aim is for learners to make a whole from different parts of a text, each being held by a different person or taken from a different source. Comparison tasks, finally, invite learners to compare two or more similar texts to spot factual or attitudinal differences, or to find two points in common. Learners might have difficulties with certain texts. Factors which are likely to cause problems are unknown words or phrases, unusual metaphors and complex phrase- or clause structures. Teachers ought to consider these items when preparing their classes for the task. Generally, if a text is linguistically complex, an easy task should be set. If, on the other hand, a text is easy, more challenging tasks can be set. The democratic structure of the Internet, that gives every user the opportunity to contribute his thoughts, allows a totally different view of our society and makes the Internet also interesting for education and teaching. The speed in 55

which information is provided and can be downloaded makes it absolutely unrivalled. We, like most teachers today, take it as a given that communicative ability in a second language must be considered as a whole. That is, communicative ability includes not only vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar skills, but also the capacity to use these in real-world contexts. It is this last point which is often missed by traditional assessment tools, such as university entrance exams, often because it is considered too time-consuming and subjective to try to assess communicative ability. We hope to show you that task-based assessment is neither time-consuming nor subjective, and in fact includes many other advantages as well. Task-based assessment is easy, straightforward and, above all, meaningful for students and teachers alike. Simply put, one begins by looking at the appropriate completion of any given task first, and at the accuracy of the language used to complete it second. If the student can achieve a particular goal, or outcome,” using English, then the student passes. Conversely, if they cannot achieve the outcome in a generally acceptable manner, then they fail. Task Tell a story: Parameters On a simple, familiar topic (e.g., family trip). To a single sympathetic listener (e.g., a friend). Now, let us say you are grading the task outcome on a 10-point scale. If the student has appropriately completed the task (i.e., They have managed to tell a story according to these parameters, regardless of how “good” it actually was.), they pass, and now have a score of between 6 and 10. If they could not accomplish the task (e.g., They could not be understood at all, or if what they produced would not reasonably be called “a story.”) then they fail. If they spoke reasonably well but did not stay completely within the parameters (e.g., If they spoke for only one minute or they spoke on an entirely different kind of topic.) then they did not complete the task, and they fail. Of course, as the teacher, you may always choose to make allowances in such cases, but strictly speaking, in a task-based assessment model, this student would indeed fail. The next step is to assess how well the task was achieved. Now we can look at things such as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Remember, if an 56

appropriate outcome was achieved, then we already know that the student’s pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar are at an “acceptable” level for the task, communicatively speaking. They would not have managed to complete the task otherwise. Thus, task-based assessment works something like this: Step 1 Was the task appropriately completed? Would the outcome be reasonably recognizable by an “average” native speaker of English as an example of its “type”? (In this case, was it a story? Was there a beginning, a middle and an end? Were the events in the story linked to each other coherently? Was it clear enough to understand, despite any possible language problems such as poor pronunciation or grammar mistakes?) Yes (pass) No (fail) Step 2 If “yes,” how good was it? Read the descriptors below and assign a grade from 6 to 10. If “no, ere there at least some redeeming qualities? Assign a grade from 1 to 5. Example scoring criteria for a pass: 10 No grammar mistakes worth mentioning. Vocabulary use was veryappropriate. Pronunciation was exceptionally clear. Speech was remarkably smooth and fluent. The underlying principle at work in task-based assessment is that tasks can be organized in a hierarchy which parallels “steps” in language proficiency because the language necessary to perform any particular task ultimately indicates an ability to perform that task’s “type.” This means two things: We can look at tasks in terms of relative difficulty. For instance, “ordering a hamburger at the restaurant” is easier than “ordering a pizza by phone,” which in turn is easier than “giving one’s impromptu opinion in a TV interview.” This is because the language required for each is increasingly more difficult. At a restaurant, one needs only to speak in single words aided by gestures to be reasonably understood. On the phone, it is necessary to be able to ask and respond to simple complete questions with no visual cues. Finally, to participate in a TV interview might require speaking for an extended period on an unprepared topic, requiring a facility with grammar and a large, generalized vocabulary. 58

We can think of tasks as representative of certain “types” of communicative acts. It is reasonable to expect that a learner who can order a meal at a restaurant can also function reasonably well at the dry cleaner’s or rent a car in person. Renting a car by phone, however, would be more like ordering a pizza, since the learner could not rely on gestures and other means of communicating. Finally, someone who could give a reasonable TV interview could also be expected to, say, participate as a student in a high school algebra course. Although how to rank tasks according to complexity and how to organize them into task types are still unresolved issues for researchers and theorists, we have chosen to follow the lead of language descriptor systems such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in our Student Book. Nevertheless, our tasks do not necessarily correlate with either of these, as our primary concerns were task complexity and authenticity. 59

CONCLUSION It is clear that we cannot find a universal language learning methodology fitting on any teacher type, learner type, cultural background and personal preference. Each concept has its advantages, otherwise it would not have been created, but also it has its disadvantages. Concepts appreciated by one learner might be rejected by the other. All that methodology can do is to try to detect certain trends in society and then combine them with what research finds is good for most effective language learning. Task-based learning, I think, is a typical approach for our time where two ideas are very important: naturalness and communication. These ideas lead like a red thread through all aspects of our lives. It is naturalness in style, in food, in behaviour, and learning; it is communication in business, in public, in privacy, and learning. The combination of the two must be the key to most effecient language learning and teaching: Let us all become native-like communication experts of any language. Naturalness stands here not only for the learning process, but also for the achieved ability for language use. I do not think that it is impossible to speak a second language as fluent as native speakers do. Spending a number of years in the target country can help a lot. But I doubt that language learners can achieve the ability to use the respective language as natural as native speakers. Language knows so many different shades and tones, one simply has to grow up with it to be able to express them all. Although the exposure to most natural and authentic language will not produce clones of native speakers, it can though help a lot. Although or maybe just because we cannot turn language learners into native speakers, we have to aim at the highest degree of natural language use possible. Very often, there is a major difference between the kind of English taught in schools and the kind of English spoken in Great Britain or the United States. Language forms are used inadequately, vocabulary is learnt in inappropriate contexts and the pronunciation is sometimes very similar to the first language. This is probably due to a methodology interested more in the structure of 60

the language than in its use and to teachers who illustrate theory with invented examples adapted to the respective structure. The role of the teacher in TBLT is approached from three perspectives: a) the teacher as mediator of the students’ language development, contributing to the effectiveness of TBLT as a pedagogical approach to second language education; b) the teacher as a key figure in the implementation of TBLT, and thus as a change agent in the innovation of second language education; c) the teacher as researcher, and thus as an active contributor to the development and further refinement of TBLT as a researched pedagogy. Task-based learning tries to avoid such an unnatural understanding of language by presenting pieces of authentic language from which the learners can derive theories about the structure of the language and which function as a model for authentic language use. Making learners to communicate themselves as much as they can supports communication abilities. The main emphasis always lays on authenticity which just means that pieces of language are not produced to serve the function to illustrate grammatical theories but to communicate certain contents. Obviously, learners cannot find out about the structure of language just by themselves, no matter how comprehensible and appropriate the input might by. There are a number of concepts which exist in most languages and therefore can be easily discovered but certain grammatical ideas differ enormously from the learners' first language and are not as obvious. It is a central matter of task-based learning that the teacher steps back and acts as an observer in the background. This definitely supports the learners' independence and may also increase motivation but I envision the teacher being sometimes more active in the language focus stage than described in most works about task-based learning. He does not need to prescribe what learners have to think, as this is the case in traditional approaches to language learning, but it would be, according to my view, quite helpful if he would describe grammatical concepts that are beyond the learners' capability more actively. Task-based learning is an interesting concept which tries to combine 61

modern findings of second language acquisition research with a traditional, structural approach. Additionally, it is a highly flexible framework; its components can be easily adapted to fit any learning situation. The ideas according to which task based learning is designed are innovative on the one hand but not really revolutionary on the other. Innovation is inherently threatening. A new perception in pedagogy, implying a different pattern of classroom activity, is an intruder into teachers' mental frames - an unsettling one, because there is a conflict of mismatch between old and new perceptions and, more seriously, a threat to prevailing routines and to the sense of security dependent on them. With task-based learning, however, teachers and learners should not have major problems getting used to the new method. Communcation stands in the centre of attention but structure comes right after. So, the gap between "communication" and "structure", the two opposing concepts in language learning,is being narrowed. It can, I think, never be completely closed but a balanced compromise between the two ideas is the most effecient way anyway. Task-based learning offers a change from the grammar practice routines through which many learners have previously failed to learn to communicate. It encourages learners to experiment with whatever English they can recall, to try things out without fear of failure and public correction, and to take active control of their own learning, both in and outside class. For the teacher, it may be true that the task- based language teaching is an adventure. But, it is also an effective language instruction that is worth trying. Task-based learning can also be used in content areas well beyond language learning. In such instruction, the learning “task” is viewed as a basic tool that teachers use to guide students developing strategies for real-world problems solving. Such an approach is broadly and effective in science, social studies, and other disciplines, including business, medical education, accounting, etc. By completing the task, learners are provided with a real purpose for knowledge or strategy use and a natural context for content study. 62
