Introduction. On December 10, 2012 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”. 1 It is noted that in the framework of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Programme for Training in the country, a comprehensive foreign languages’ teaching system, aimed at creating harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern-thinking young generation, further integration of the country to the world community, has been created. During the years of independence, over 51.7 thousand teachers of foreign languages graduated from universities, English, German and French multimedia tutorials and textbooks for 5-9 grades of secondary schools, electronic resources for learning English in primary schools were created, more than 5000 secondary schools, professional colleges and academic lyceums were equipped with language laboratories. However, analysis of the current system of organizing language learning shows that learning standards, curricula and textbooks do not fully meet the current requirements, particularly in the use of advanced in formation and media technologies. Education in mainly conducted in traditional methods. Further development of a continuum of foreign languages learning at all levels of education; improving skills of teachers and provision of modern teaching materials are required. Actuality of the theme. As English is considered the lingua franca of the twenty-first century, everyone needs to have a good command of English today and the importance of teaching English for professional uses and particularly in the field of tourism is undeniable. English proficiency is required in all professional areas but it becomes essential in the tourist industry because of its specific characteristics. development of tourism and in this field, English is used widely for travel as well as in client contact and is of outmost interest at the tertiary level. But its interest should not be restricted to tourism students: English for tourism is one of the most attractive areas of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) because, after all, all of us are tourists on various occasions nowadays. English is the fourth most widely spoken native language in the world, and in terms of sheer number of speakers, it is the most spoken official language. It is the primary language used in international affairs having official status even in nations where it is not the primary spoken language. English is indisputably the primary language of global trade and commerce and tourism since in many countries, most tourism authorities and other officials in contact with the public speak English to interact and engage with tourists and immigrants. Investigation of the problem. The problem is investigated by many linguistics. English scientists Tony Dudley-Evans, Robinson P., Strevens., Swales J., Graves K., Laurence A., Gatehouse K., Hutchinson T. are among them. The aim and tasks of the qualification paper. The purpose of this study is to examine the teaching of English language skills in tourism. To study the theory of teaching English for Specific Purposes and classification and historical perspectives of English for Specific Purposes. Special attention has been paid to the practical part as teaching language skills in the English for Specific Purposes. To achieve this goal following tasks are set: To collect material related to the theme; To select necessary theoretic literature; To analyze and give activities for improving language skills in the English for Specific Purposes; To make necessary conclusions Object of the qualification paper. One of the major directions in the role of the government of Uzbekistan to develop tourism in the country should be the introduction of the modern educational system in the field of tourism and promotion of its developments. The competitive usage of potential of Uzbekistan tourism is based on tourism personnel and quality of their preparation. Preparation of specialists for tourism sphere opens qualitatively new boundaries in the developed countries of the world. That’s why tried to give information about teaching English language for tourism sphere. Structure of the qualification paper. It consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of used literature. The first chapter deals with brief outline of the English for English Purposes and classification of English for Specific Purposes. Second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of teaching language issues and skills in the English for Specific Purposes. Conclusion deals with the results of investigation. Construction of the qualification paper. It consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of literature. Total amount of the work is pages. 5

CHAPTER I. OVERVIEW OF ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES 1.1. DEFINITION of ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES English for specific purposes is a term that refers to teaching or studying English for a particular career (like law, medicine) or for business in general. There is a specific reason for which English is learned. Pauline Robinson describes English for Specific Purposes as a type of English Language Teaching and defines it as: “Goal-oriented language learning.“ 2 The origin of ESP and its development is closely linked with learners interest in various specific disciplines e.g. Law English, English for Hotel Industry or English for Tourist Management. Students learn English for a specific purpose, represented by studying subject matter, to gain and develop appropriate knowledge and skills through English. That is why English language is not seen as the main goal in the process of learning, but rather a vehicle for its acquirement. According to T. Dudley-Evans “Students study English for specific Purposes not because they are interested in the English language as such but because they have to perform a task in English. Their command of the English language must be such that they can reach a satisfactory level in their specialist subject studies.“ 3 The fact that learners know specifically why they are learning a language is a great advantage on both sides of the process. The group of ESP learners is going to achieve the same goal in the field of studying branch, so learners motivation, in a form of the same aim, enables teacher to meet learners needs and expectations easier. Learner and the way of learning are considered to be the main factors in the whole process. The original flowering of the ESP movement resulted from general developments in the world economy in the 1950s and 1960s: the growth of science and technology, the increased use of English as the international language of science, technology and business, the in creased economic power of 2 Robinson,P. certain oil-rich countries and the increased numbers of international students studying in the UK, USA and Australia. The idea of language for specific purposes, however, has been around for a long time. Hutchinson T. and Waters A. see English for Specific Purposes as an approach rather than a product, by which they mean that ESP does not involve a particular kind of language, teaching material or methodology. They suggest that 'the- foundation of ESP is the simple question: Why does this learner tired to learn a foreign language?' 4 The answer to this question relates to the learners, the language required and the learning context, and thus establishes the primacy of need in ESP. Need is defined by the reasons for which the student is learning English, which will vary from study purposes such as following a postgraduate course in an English-speaking country to work purposes such as participating in business meetings or taking hotel bookings. These purposes are the starting points which determine the language to be taught. Strevens' definition of ESP makes a distinction between four , absolute characteristics and two variable characteristics. The absolute characteristics are that English for Specific Purposes consists of English Language Teaching which is designed to meet specified needs of the learner, related in content , that is in its themes and topics, to particular disciplines, occupations and activities, centred on language appropriate to those activities in syntax, lexis, discourse, semantics and so on, and analysis of the discourse, in contrast with General English. The variable characteristics are that ESP may be restricted as to the learning skills to be learned, may not be taught according to any pre-ordained methodology. 5 Robinson also accepts the primacy of needs analysis in defining ESP. Her definition is based on two key defining criteria and a number of characteristics that are generally found to be true of ESP. Her key criteria are that ESP is 4 Hutchinson T and Waters A. 'normally goal-directed', and that ESP courses develop from a needs analysis, which 'aims to specify as closely as possible what exactly it is that students have to do through the medium of English' . Her characteristics are that ESP courses are generally constrained by a limited time period, in which their objectives have to be achieved, and are taught to adults in homogeneous classes in terms of the work or specialist studies that the students are involved in. Each definition has validity but also weaknesses, either in the defini tion or in the features described. Strevens' definition is the most comprehensive of the three quoted, but can lead to a certain confusion. By referring to content in the second absolute characteristic it may confirm the false impression held by many teachers that ESP is always and necessarily related directly to subject content. Robinson's mention of 'homogeneous classes' as a characteristic of ESP may lead to the same conclusion. Much ESP work is, by contrast, based on the notion of a 'common-core' of language and skills that belong to all academic disciplines or cut across the whole activity of business. ESP teaching does not necessarily have to be related to content but it should always reflect the underlying concepts and activities of the broad discipline. Thus English for Academic Purposes (EAP), whether it is directly related to the specific disciplines that students are studying or not, should make use of the essentially problem-solving methodology of academic study. Similarly, Business English teaching should reflect the business context in which business meetings or negotiations take place . A definition of ESP should reflect the fact that much ESP teaching, especially where it is specifically linked to a particular profession or discipline, makes use of a methodology that differs from that used in General Purpose English teaching. By methodology here we are referring to the nature of the interaction between the ESP teacher and the learners. In more general ESP classes the interaction may be similar to that in a General Purpose English class; in the more specific ESP classes, however, the teacher sometimes becomes more 9

like a language consultant, enjoying equal status with the learners who have their own expertise in the subject matter. In the definitions it is stressed two aspects of ESP methodology: all ESP teaching should reflect the methodology of the disciplines and profes sions it serves; and in more specific ESP teaching the nature of the interaction between the teacher and learner may be very different from that in a general English class. The language should be included as a defining feature of ESP. While the specified needs arising from needs analysis relate to activities that students need to carry out, a key assumption of ESP is that these activities generate and depend on registers, genres and associated language that students need to be able to manipulate in order to carry out the activity. In these definitions it is used absolute and variable characteristics. Absolute characteristics: ESP is designed to meet specific needs of the learner; ESP makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the disciplines it serves; ESP is centred on the language grammar, lexis, register, skills, discourse and genres appropriate to these activities. Variable characteristics: ESP may be related to or designed for specific disciplines; ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different metho - dology from that of general English; ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at a tertiary level institution or in a professional work situation. It could, however, be used for learners at secondary school level; ESP is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students. Most ESP courses assume basic knowledge of the language system, but it can be used with beginners. Organizing the ESP course is very important step to achieve a satisfying goal in the course. There exist many factors playing a crucial role in organizing ESP course without them the learning process would not lead to effectiveness. The term specific in ESP refers to a specific purpose for which English is learnt and teacher should be familiar with. The language description. involve questions, e.g. .What topic areas will need to be covered? What does the student 10

need to learn? What aspects of language will be needed and how will they be described?. Finding the right answers to these questions results from the setting exact goals and objectives of the course. Designing a syllabus analyses what the course is going to be about. Setting goals and objectives of the course in advance is inevitable. Another feature of organizing course underlines the way the learning is achieved. Hutchinson and Waters speak about “learning theory which provides the theoretical basis for the methodology, by helping us to understand how people learn.“ (Hutchinson and Waters, 1992, p 23). It is natural that learning strategies vary and corresponds with learners groups, their age, level or reason they study. The way adults acquire language is differ from children, the group of advanced expects different attitude from beginners and teachers determine which aspects of ESP learning will be focused on to meet learners needs and expectations successfully. Hutchinson and Waters (1992) point out another aspect affecting the ESP course as well. It relates to learners surrounding and discusses the questions of who, why, where and when, connected with the nature of particular target and learning situation. To organize the ESP course effectively and consequently achieve a satisfactory goal, having respect for all three factors is evident. 11

1.2. Classification of English for Specific Purposes. In this section we introduce and explain the many abbreviations that have been used in describing ESP, terms such as EAP, EOP, EST and EBP. ESP has traditionally been divided into two main areas: English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Occupational Purposes EOP). The typical tree diagram for ESP, which divides EAP and EOP according to discipline or professional area, is shown in figure 1.1. Recently the academic study of business, finance, banking, economics and accounting has become increasingly important, especially on Masters in Business Administration (MBA) courses, but, as yet, no specific acronym has become established for such courses. The term EOP refers to English that is not for academic purposes; it includes professional purposes in administration, medicine, law and business, and vocational purposes for non-professionals in work or pre-work situations. We may thus distinguish between studying the language and discourse of, for example, medicine for academic purposes, which is designed for medical 13

students, and studying for occupational (professional) purposes, which is designed for practising doctors. This classification places English for Business Purposes (EBP) as a category within EOP. EBP is sometimes seen as separate from EOP as it involves a lot of General English as well as Specific Purpose English, and also because it is such a large and important category. A business purpose is, however, an occupational purpose, so it is logical to see it as part of EOP. Within English for Vocational Purposes (EVP) there are two sub sections: Vocational English, which is concerned with the language of training for specific trades or occupations, and Pre-Vocational English, which is concerned with finding a job and interview skills. It also deals with succeeding in a job through an understanding of employer expectations and policies . A distinction should also be made between common-core English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) and English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP). The same distinction can be made between English for General Business Purposes (EGBP) and English for Specific Business Purposes (ESBP). The use of classification trees creates a number of problems by failing to capture the essentially fluid nature of the various types of ESP teaching and the degree of overlap between 'common-core' EAP or EBP and General English. The 'common-core' English and semi-technical vocabulary taught in many English for General Academic Purposes courses could well be extremely valuable in the teaching of what might be referred to in General English as 'factual description'. Similarly, the detailed focus on reading skills, such as 'establishing main points' or 'inferring meaning from context' that form a major part of EAP courses, can just as validly be taught as part of an intermediate to advanced General English course. Business English can also be seen as a 'med - iating language between the technicalities of particular businesses and the language of the general public' , which puts it in a position between General English and specialist English. 14

We therefore suggest that an additional perspective can be gained through the presentation of the whole of English Language Teaching on a continuum that runs from clearly definable General English courses through to very specific ESP courses. It seems that positions 2 and 3, which are towards the centre of the continuum, have much in common and it is only the overall context of the programme that decides whether a given course is classified as ESP or not. An advanced secondary school level course that includes a focus on, say, listening skills will be seen as General English as the course itself has the aim of teaching English as part of a broad educational process. However, a similar component taught as part of a pre-sessional course for international students about to embark on a postgraduate course taught in English in an English-speaking country will be seen as ESP because it is part of a focused course with a specific time period with clear and specific objectives. The teaching material might, in fact, be quite similar, but the teaching methodology is likely to be different. The use of the continuum also clarifies the nature of more specific ESP work. At position 4, the work is very specific in terms of the skills taught, but the groups themselves are not homogeneous groups from one discipline or profession. When we talk of engineers, scientists or doctors, we are talking about broad groups: individual members may have quite different needs and backgrounds. So, on the one hand, detailed attention will be paid to a skill such as report writing, or particular features of language and/or discourse of, say, a business meeting, but, on the other hand, great care has to be taken in choosing the actual skill or skills to focus on and the contexts in which to do so. For example, some doctors will need to read and write medical journal articles, others will need oral skills for talking to patients. There are clear advantages in setting up an ESP course where students have specific needs. Strevens summarises the advantages of ESP with the following four points: being focused on the learner's need, it wastes no time; it is relevant 15

to the learner; it is successful in imparting learning; it is more cost-effective than 'General English'. 6 The main point here is that motivation in ESP has a profound effect on the question of how specific the course is. High motivation on the part of learners generally enables more subject specific work to be undertaken; low motivation, however, is likely to lead to a concentra tion on less specific work. Specialists in either academic or occupational contexts who need English for specific tasks will be impatient with an ESP course that does not address their difficulties with those tasks. Other students who are studying English because it is on the timetable of their institution or who have been sent on a course by their company and who do not have specific, immediate and clearly definable needs may be demotivated by more specific work and may be more motivated by ESP work that falls more towards the centre of the continuum outlined. ESP is essentially a materials and teaching-led movement. It has been influenced by developments and changes in Applied Linguistics and ELT, but as a lively, 'feisty', ambitious, young movement within ELT it has also had considerable influence on ELT. ESP was, for example, very influential in showing how a communicative language curriculum could be turned into either a functional-notional syllabus or a task-based syllabus. There is thus growing diversity in ESP teaching with interesting varia tion between, on the one hand, the EAP situations in English-medium institutions and those institutions where English plays a subsidiary role to the national language, and, on the other, between approaches to EAP and to Business English. All seem happy to be considered as part of ESP, but the constraints of the very different situations lead inevitably to different types of material and methodologies. 6 Strevens P. 1.3. English for tourism purposes The hospitality industry is globally viewed as one of the most important economic sectors of the states. The development of this industry will affect language needs. Employees of the hotel industry, for example, have the same pressure to communicate efficiently with English-speaking hotel clients. English for tourism industry is one of the most important issues in the fields of English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) as everyone is a stereotype on countless occasions. Reconsidering the case of EFL in the context of tourism industry and identifying the personnel needs and language problems such as the present study does, may provoke stakeholders to fight for language programs that meet the needs of the tourist personnel and emphasize the development of EFL skills. Mastering a foreign language, especially English, enables the tourist police to communicate with tourists, understand their cultural differences and increase job opportunities. Good material should be based on various interesting texts and activities providing a range of skills, one piece of material serving for developing more than one skill, e.g. reading, listening, speaking, writing. Texts as learning materials can be used for learning and practicing a wide range of skills. In ESP course, they can be sources for new vocabulary, communicative or reading skills. They can trigger various activities: warming –up activities(pre-teaching and activation of new vocabulary or grammar structures, discussing questions concerning the topic);receptive activities-work with the text itself, reading, listening(various reading strategies e.g. aloud, quiet, skimming, scanning, with or without translation, informative; productive activities-practising of acquired knowledge, follow-up activities-next improving, developing, using of acquired knowledge. 18

Chapter III. Teaching language issues and skills in English for Specific Purposes for tourism sphere. In this chapter it is discussed the teaching of language skills in English for specific Purposes for tourism sphere. Teaching of five skills reading, listening and speaking, writing, and vocabulary are pointed as a key issues in this chapters. We opted for five skills because, when we discuss listening compre - hension, we need to be clear about whether we are referring to listening to monologue, as in an academic lecture or a business presentation, or to listening as part of a group discussion, as in a business meeting or negotiation or a seminar in which the listener will also contribute as a speaker to the discussion. The same issue arises with speaking, which may be interactive in a two-way or group discussion or may be monologue, when the speaker is making a presentation. The term 'skills' is used at two levels: there are five macro-skills of reading, listening, listening and speaking, speaking, and writing, each consisting of a number of micro-skills. Some (micro) skills such as 'using cohesive and discourse markers' will be associated with all the (macro) skills; others such as 'revising a first draft of a text' will be associated with a particular (macro) skill, in this case writing. We will look at each of the five macro-skills in turn. 2.1. Teaching reading skills in English for Specific Purposes . In this section we shall look at how the purpose of reading and the balance between skills and language affect the teaching of reading in ESP. We shall then discuss three key stages in designing and teaching a reading course: the selection of texts, the extracting and recording of information, and the use of the information that has been gathered. One of the most important contributions to the approach to reading in ESP was the shift from Text As a Linguistic Object (TALO) to Text As a Vehicle of Information (TAVI) . Johns and Davies encapsulated the key principles that, for 20

ESP learners, extracting information accurately and quickly is more significant than language details; that understanding the macrostructure comes before language study; and that application of the information in the text is of paramount importance. 7 The reader first processes the language and then links the ideas to what is already known. Around the same time, there was a second significant contribution to teaching reading on ESP courses: the recognition that good reading requires language and skills. Hosenfield had shown that less successful foreign language learners had a fragmented approach to text, while successful learners went for overall meaning, guessing or skipping language and information. The reading component of an ESP course thus requires a balance between skills and language development. Some of the key skills to be learnt or transferred into the new language are: selecting what is relevant for the current purpose; using all the features of the text such as headings, layout, typeface; skimming for content and meaning; scanning for specifics; identifying organisational patterns; understanding relations within a sentence and between sentences; using cohesive and discourse markers ; predicting, inferring and guessing; identifying main ideas, supporting ideas and examples; processing and evaluating the information during reading; transferring or using the information while or after reading. 8 Most of these skills are composed of several processes. It has been a misconception in some interpretations of ESP that skimming and scanning are the key skills. Skimming and scanning are useful first stages for deter mining whether to read a document or which parts to read carefully. Once a document has been identified as relevant, then ESP readers need to read carefully, extract meaning and consider the author's attitude. Author's attitude is particularly important; it is another misconception that scientific discourse is attitude-free. Traditionally, texts have mainly been chosen by institu tions and teachers: by institutions through the textbooks available on the market; by teachers 7 Johns A. and Dudley Evans A. through the textbooks in their resource centre and any supplementary material they provide. However, learners and subject specialists also have an important role to play in selecting texts for reading. The texts they supply can become part of a regular course or be used just once. When using extracts from a long text, readers will need to know that it is an extract and to have one or two sentences (which probably have to be specially written) for orientation. These provide the context necessary for activating existing knowledge and accurate processing. If only the start of long texts were used, then all the reading would be of an introductory nature. Once good texts have been selected, then activities can be written. These will relate to the overall purpose of reading the text and so the process begins from using the information gathered. Although this may be the final step in the process of reading a text, it is the one from which the design of activities begins. Knowing what students would really do with a text , and why, is necessary for setting the task that will guide the reading process and determine all the other activities. Here is given activity for reading and discussing questions concerning students‘ attitudes to travelling, e.g. favourite countries, types of accommodation, means of transport . Activity is for pre- intermediate and intermediate level students. The aims of the activity are to find out students‘ relation to the given topic in a form of short and clear questions, their opinions, taste and geographical knowledge, to get to know more about each other , to involve speaking skills with the aid of special terminology. It may be individual and pair work. Pre- reading activity. As introduction to the topic a teacher gives out the questionnaire to each student. A teacher goes through the list together to make sure that they understand all questions. Students have some time to think about the questions on their own or discuss them in pairs. Then they discuss the answers together, share students‘ opinions and compare them in the class. Students have no problems to answer the questions immediately. They have concrete ideas about their holiday destinations. Thanks to questionnaire students 22

may get to know either similar or different classmates‘ ideas, opinions about the topic. Their answers may be rather similar, their choice of ideal countries, they would like to go to, is influenced by languages they study at school and their knowledge about countries. The most favourite countries are England, the USA, Spain, Germany, Switzerland or New Zealand. They have either visited those countries or they have never been there and they would like to go there. On the other hand they do not tend to go to Russia, Iraq, Turkey or even Poland was mentioned for several times. Concerning dream cities, London, New York, Paris or Tokyo appeared in the list very often. They want to see typical sights of those cities, e.g. Westminster Abbey, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower etc. Vienna is the most visited city among students of German. Another acivity for improving reading skills of students is called “The Lonely Planet”. The aims are to practise reading and translating skills with bilingual dictionaries, to involve speaking skills, reading comprehension. The aids are Text a), b), c) (see appendix III), dictionaries for group. Activity begins with silent and aloud reading. This activity is suitable for Intermediate Level students. Before reading the text they do some pre-reading activities. Students will be asked a series of questions concerning travelling (see questionnaire) to be more ducked into the topic. The second pre-reading activity is Map - Find your country (see appendix II) which is dedicated to students‘ geographical knowledge. For reading itself a teacher may choose three texts from the well- known tourist guidebook. Each text describes a different European country. the teacher should pre-write some difficult words on the blackboard and they discuss them together. Students do not know the names of those countries and they try to guess its name. The choice is influenced by students‘ questionnaires. The teacher should choose a country that was mentioned as one of the most popular then one that was not mentioned at all but it has a long cultural tradition and it is a centre of tourism as well and finally a country in which English is spoken. The teacher divides students into three small groups, gives each group a handout with the text and a dictionary to look up the unknown words. 23

Students can discuss it in groups then complete the name of the country into the text and write it down on the map of Europe (see appendix II). Then they discuss it together in the class and share students‘ opinions. In the text, there can occur to some unknown words that can lead to misunderstanding. To prevent this students can have bilingual dictionaries to clear up the meaning of the word and they can ask me for explanation or pronunciation. Some words are pre-written on the blackboard. Students will enjoy guessing the names of countries more than reading the text. There is also post-reading activity for pre-intermidiate level students. The Aims are to understand the facts, to be able to find out crucial information and compare it. The aids are Text a), b), c) (see appendix III), dictionaries for pair, handout (see appendix V). the activity is composed of comparing the facts about three different countries and completing the box. This activity is possible to do in two ways. The first one is that the teacher gives a handout with these three texts to pairs. Students read the texts, with the aid of me, and translate them together to make sure that everyone understands all facts in the text. After that students work in pairs and complete the box with missing information. The second way is that the teacher divides students into three small groups. Each group has one text. They read it silently and complete the missing facts concerning only their country. Then we share and compare those facts about country all together. Each text should contain clear information. The problematic words can be written in the blackboard and pronounced aloud in the class. 24

2.2. Teaching listening and speaking skills in English for Specific Purposes . This section concentrates on situations where listening and speaking are both required within the real time of the communicative event. In these circumstances participants have dual roles - as listeners and as speakers. We shall use the term 'spoken interaction' to cover situations where both these skills are employed, where to say the right thing in an appropriate way requires good listening skills as well as speaking skills. In the earlier years of ESP development spoken interactions received almost no attention. In EOP teaching there has been more attention to spoken interactions. In fact, courses may concentrate entirely on this aspect, for example courses for students in the hotel and catering fields or for air traffic controllers. Good listening is vital in spoken interactions, particularly in business, and goes beyond understanding the words and the key points; it is a skill and an art. Active listening has been adopted from management inter personal skills courses and is an example of an interdisciplinary cross over. Active listening includes the non-verbal and the verbal encourage ment given to a speaker, for example, non- verbal physical expressions, gestures and movements, and verbal 'back- channelling' devices such as 'uh uh, really, right, that's interesting, tell me more' and questions. Active listening also involves paraphrasing and summarising so that the speaker knows that their message has been heard. Thus active listening can involve speaking; it is about showing that we have been listening and understanding, and not thinking about other matters. The purpose is not to take over the turn but to encourage the speaker so that we find out more. Questioning is another skill and art needed for effective spoken interaction and, like active listening, it goes beyond just the words. Ques tioning is a powerful means of controlling communication. Questions can be asked for a range of purposes, using a variety of language forms. Questions may be about information - for detail, for reasons, for feelings; they may be about clarification 25

- checking understanding, confirming; they can also be tactical - to stall for time, to disturb, to show the strengths or weaknesses of arguments. Closed-response questions lead to 'yes/no' answers means that responders often go beyond the yes/no and provide additional information. However, different maxims may operate in business or diplomacy and closed questions may result in a yes/no response with no additional information. Closed questions are a weak way to obtain information, but a powerful means of checking information or gaining commitment. Limited-response questions lead to specific information (grammatical structure 2) and are good for obtaining details. Open-response questions give a wider scope to the responder and do not bias the content of the response. They are vital for information gathering as they are the least directive. They are mainly formed using 'Wh' structures with verbs of emotion or expansion, for example, 'what do you feel...?', 'to what extent...?', 'can you expand on that?' Additional categories of questions are probing and building. Often questioners work from within their own frameworks and ask questions based on their own perspective and state of knowledge. That way information can be missed. The art of questioning is to work from the responder's framework which can lead to new insights. Careful listening gives rise to questions which are generated by the speaker's words. Probing questions narrow down the information and generally concen trate on facts; they are often also limited-response questions. Building questions aim to expand and may attempt to deal with feelings and values as well as facts; they are often open. The questions asked will depend on the purpose and the kind of response required and these may vary during an interaction. A technical discussion or a sightseeing tour may focus on detail and use limited- spoken interactions involve just two people; telephone conversa tions (excluding telephone 26

conferencing) are one example. Many social situations, even where there are more people, also revolve around dialogues. Whatever the focus of an ESP course, there can be a good deal of listening and speaking going on. This should not be confused with teaching effective spoken interaction. Task-based activities and group work generate discussion and provide learners with practice. Speaking activities often just provide a scenario for interaction whereas learners might find it helpful to consider first what the features of a successful interaction would be. This would focus their attention on appropriate language and skills, and provide a basis for evaluation at the feedback stage. On the listening side much comprehension work, particularly in EAP, has evolved around note-taking and showing understanding by an swering questions on the content (mostly by writing information down, whether in prose or in a diagrammatic format). The listener is an outsider. In EOP spoken interactions, writing is rare. The point is to show that you have been listening actively and have really heard what is said. If a speaker does not feel s/he has been heard, then that speaker will keep repeating the point or withdraw from active participation. Once the speaker knows s/he has been listened to, then even if the topic or suggestion is rejected s/he more readily drops it. Showing understanding is achieved through the use of paraphrasing, summarising and questioning, all of which require the listener to take part, to be an insider. However, listening practice provided in language leaching materials usually places the learner as an outsider. Thus learners fill in the blanks, take notes, answer comprehension questions. Spoken monologue, that is oral presentations, can be a feature of EOP and EAP work. Mostly the teaching of oral presentations in EAP occurs in English-medium situations with some examples in EAP courses of situation. In EOP, oral presentations feature particularly on courses for tour guides, sales representatives and profes sional people such as doctors and engineers. 27

An effective oral presentation is built on language and skills and requires confidence. ESP courses are likely to look at: structuring, visuals, voice, and advance signalling as well as language. Structuring a presentation has much in common with structuring written communication in as much as listeners want a clear map to follow; there should be a start, a middle and an end. Genre analysis of written articles shows a limited range of moves in introductions and a more complex situation in discussions. Voice work may include pronunciation but intonation usually hinders comprehension more. Phrasing, pausing, speed of delivery, volume and lone variation all play an important role and may need as much attention as the actual words. Pausing is silence and often feels uncomfortable to a less confident speaker. It is though essential proces sing time for listeners. Silence is also a part of the language of visuals; the silent time when the visual makes its impact and the audience absorbs and processes the information. Advance signalling or signposts help listeners follow both the structure of the information and argument, and recognise the significance of visuals. For practical reasons, oral presentation work is often only a component on courses with restricted numbers. However, it is possible, with ingenuity, to include such work in large class situations Oral presentation work often concentrates on the stand-up, prepared talk accompanied by visuals. However, for many business people the short, fairly impromptu presentation in a meeting is a more common event; they may be asked to state the current position of a project, to fill in details, to explain the need for extra resources. Most of the principles and language of a longer prepared presentation apply in these situations and fillers such as 'well, that's an interesting point' or 'thank you for asking about that' are useful devices as they give a second or two of thinking time. Here is given an example to speaking activity, it consists of making dialogue. The aims are to practise speaking skills and expressions they already know from previous lessons, to prepare for their practices in hotels and travel agencies. 28

Aids: Dictionaries Activity: Making dialogues in pairs with using expressions of like/dislike and vocabulary concerning travelling and hotel facilities. Guessing the country according to given facts. Level of English: Intermediate. Interaction: Pair work. The teacher tells students to make pairs. They are going to have a conversational activity. They imagine a situation that they want to go on holidays and they have no idea where to go. They are quite wealthy so you can afford luxury but on the other hand they do not mind sleeping in a tent and going through some adventure. One of them is an employee of travel agency who offers they some destination and the other is an irresolute client. The teacher writes some words on the blackboard and these words must be used in the conversation at least one time. The words are: exotic, destination, five expressions of likeability, hotel facilities, special request, cold weather, first class, tourist guide and etc. The point of the activity is that students do not mention the name of the country in their dialogues. They speak about the way how to get there, about the weather, people, habits, food, currency, countryside etc. During the conversation students make notes and after all dialogues each pair gives its opinions and they discuss it together. Sometimes they are not well informed about the countries they choose and they do not give correct facts. That causes an argument among students. The teacher tells them that the goal is to choose well known country and be able to cover the information as well. This activity can be also done without guessing the country, just as a dialogue, but in this way it is not so interesting for students. Another activity is “Language study”. The aims are to be able to express one’s feeling and emotion. How much you like or do not like somebody or something. Aids: Questionnaire (see appendix I), handout (see appendix VI) Activity: Practising making and saying sentences with using appropriate expressions of likeability. Level of English: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate. Interaction: Individual work The teacher tells students to look at their questionnaire, question Do you agree with? There are several expressions from like most to hate. Find them and try to 29

put them in order from “dislike most“ to “like most“ . Students should already know the meaning of these expressions from prereading activity when they go through all questions in questionnaire together. If they do not remember it the teacher do not translate them before. It will be too easy so in that occasion they are supposed to guess the right meaning on their own. After that the teacher gives them a list with words relating to travelling and they make similar sentences to say how much they like or dislike them. Some students do not see any differences in “like“, “enjoy“, “be fond of“ even in their mother language. To prevent this, it is good to give some concrete examples, also in their motherlanguage , relating to student him/herself. Students will know most of expressions of likeability and they will be aware of using them.They will have clear ideas about things and activities they like or dislike to do. In general, students should know the meaning of all expressions mentioned in questionnaire, they should use them in the right way and should be able to recognise the differences between them. Example: I like chocolate. (I really like its taste.) I enjoy eating chocolate. (Anytime I eat it I really enjoy this activity.) I am fond of eating chocolate. (I am as fond of eating chocolate as eating ice- cream.) Next activity is “Map – find your country”. The aims are to be aware of students‘ geographical knowledge and good orienteering on a map. Aids: Map (see appendix II) Activity: Students are looking for their three most and least favourite countries on the map. Level of English: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate Interaction: Pair work The teacher gives students a handout with the blank map. They are supposed to find and note down the countries they like the most and least according to their questionnaires and what is more they must write down their capital cities. Possible lack of geographical knowledge about the countries can lead to fact that students are not able to find a country on the map. To prevent this, using 30

an atlas of the world is welcomed. Geography is one of the principal subjects taught at school, so they should be well-informed about the countries. 31

2.3. Writing skills in English for Specific Purposes. Developing writing skills also involves other skills, notably the skills of planning, drafting and revising so that the end product is appropriate both to the purpose of the writing and the intended readership. In planning, writing and revising writers will have in mind a reader and will (or should) think about the needs of that reader and the purpose of the document. They will have a map to guide them - their message, audience and purpose. Writers need to ask themselves ques tions such as whether to expand a point, provide an example for define a term in order to help the reader understand the text or to persuade him/ her of the validity of the argument presented. The reader may be a real person that is definitely going to read the text, for example a senior or junior colleague in a company, a client from another company, a supervisor in a university, an editor of a journal and so on. In other cases, however, writers have to construct an image of an imagined reader. In this situation writers need to ask themselves the same questions as above, but they will also consider the expectations of the discourse community. For example, if we write an introduction to a business report or an academic article, we need, on the one hand, to consider how the text can be made clear and interesting to the people that will read the introduction. The introduction also has to meet certain expectations held by either the business or the academic community about how it should be set out. We may choose not to meet those expectations, but ultimately if we want to persuade the readership of the validity of our argument, we are likely to present the introduction in a form that matches their expectations. Of course an established person is able to break the conventions, and this may indeed add to the persuasiveness of the argument presented; a less established figure is unlikely to have that freedom. We believe that the same process applies in any professional or academic writing. Successful writers are those who are able to persuade readers of the 32

validity of their arguments by using or adapting the conventions of the genre they are using while showing an awareness of the needs of the readership. This term has generally been used to refer to concentration on the features of the actual text - the end-product - that writers have to produce. The product approach to writing usually involves the presenta tion of a model text, which is analysed and then forms the basis of a task that leads to the writing of an exactly similar or a parallel text. In early days the use of a product approach often led to a rather simplistic copying of the model text by merely changing certain words from the original text to produce a new text. This was a purely mechanical task which involved no real thought about the purpose of the writing, the readership or the expectations of the discourse. The use of models for text analysis and as a basis for thinking about purposes and readership of a text can, however, have an important role to play in teaching writing. This is especially true where the teaching of writing is integrated with the teaching of reading. The situation where the writer looks at a model, or previous example, of a text she/he wishes to write and then adapts it for the specific purpose does, in fact, reflect what frequently happens in business or academic writing. When we come to translate the approaches outlined in the sections above into teaching materials and actual exercises, we find that there are six main exercise types. These are exercises that develop: • rhetorical awareness; • particular skills or language features step-by-step; • more extensive writing skills through tasks (the deep-end approach); • editing skills through peer review; • editing skills through reformulation exercises; • more specific rhetorical and linguistic awareness through integrated teaching with subject specialists. How do we actually apply these activities in the writing class? We believe that the writing class differs in a number of respects from other skills classes. 33

Firstly, we should recognise that learners are unlikely to want to spend the whole class actually writing. Writing is a difficult and tiring activity and usually needs time for reflection and revision, plus a peaceful environment, none of which are generally available in the classroom. However, the converse is also true: learners do not want all the writing practice as out-of-class work. They want help and ideas while writing, not only afterwards. A further distinction is that the teacher will have certain knowledge about the conventions of writing in business or academia, and such matters as the need for hedging in certain circumstances, that learners expect to be taught. So the teacher of writing needs to seek a balance between talking about writing and setting up tasks where students actually write, singly, or in pairs or groups, while in class. Tourism industry can directly or indirectly provide the host countries with foreign currencies, create jobs in the service and manufacturing sectors and help increase government revenues, including hotels and other types of taxes, tourist taxes, airport exit taxes, income taxes and customs duties on imports. According to the tourist police, the most English language functions needed were general conversation ,answering questions and solving problems and providing services respectively. The data indicates that the fourth language function the tourist police perceived essential is asking for cooperation followed by the function of giving information, and the final rank is offering help . As for the total score, and based on tourist police responses, it was ranked as very important . It is obvious from the results that tourist police use English in general conversations with tourists, providing services to foreigners, and answering questions and solving problems if they meet on resorts or any other destination. Those communicative functions of English are very important in the language of the tourism industry and require that tourist police should be highly trained and good at language. “Hospitality and Tourism is often described as ‘the pleasure industry’ or ‘the welcome industry’. It’s an industry where communication is the key feature. It’s also an international industry and will involve a range of inter-cultural encounters. The language of this industry is 34

quite clearly English in an international context, but it is also the language of meeting needs, of providing high levels of service, of understanding people, of delighting people, of solving problems”. It can be seen that speaking too fast in English by foreign tourists is the most serious problem for tourist police. Whereas, being unable to understand foreign accents was reported as the least problematic area. These results are attributed to the lack of exposure to listening genres and lack of continuous interaction with foreigners, although a good chance for tourist police is available if seized well in their workplaces. Using inappropriate words and expressions in speaking and lacking knowledge of grammar and structure are acute problems to tourist police . Generally, it is very clear from the total score above that tourist police face a major problem in speaking and conversation with foreigners in attraction/recreation sites. English is a foreign language in Uzbekistan. Uzbek schools teach English as any other course where students do not use outside the classroom. They lack the real opportunity to practice English outside the class or even read in English in their daily life. As a result, tourist police do not communicate with foreigners effectively as they are part of this speech community. Their speaking problems include; using incorrect words and expressions in communication, insufficient knowledge of grammar and structure, pronouncing words and expressionsin accurately, and diffidence in speaking. In fact, enabling tourist police with technical vocabulary in the field of tourism industry is important. Tourist police in Uzbekistan are enlisted to join the service with no background in the field of English for tourism purposes. They do not have the language potentials especially with collocation and context. Lack of communication and intercultural study courses that tourist police headquarters do not provide pre- service to its personnel contributes to this problem. Grammar is also important. For example, the tenses: past, present and future forms are frequently used to describe and elaborate on historical themes in the workplace. 35

The problems in reading are serious as the rest of the skills that tourist police face in using English. it is clear that tourist police encounter problems in reading in terms of vocabulary shortage ,comprehending vocabulary and understanding lexical items in tourists document . This might be due to the methods of teaching at schools which tourist police graduated from. Teaching vocabulary in context and cooperatively makes retention more effective . The reading and writing skills are routinely used in reading complaint forms, writing daily case reports, and writing letters or e-mails. When asked to identify what problems tourist police encounter at the workplace in writing skill. The most serious problem of tourist police was lacking opportunity to write , inadequate grammar for writing , followed by having inadequate vocabulary . On the other hand, insufficient skills of writing was considered the least serious problem . Tourist police rarely use writing as they rely heavily on speaking and listening skills. This explains the rank of such domain. There is given writing activity called “ Hotel brochure description”. The aims are to practise writing, reading and speaking skills with using special terminology. Aids: Handout (see appendix XII), dictionaries for group Activity: Writing in a appropriate style, good word spelling. Level of English: Pre-intermediate, Intermediate. Interaction: Group work The teacher divides students into two groups. She/ he tells students they are going to write a hotel brochure description. The style of writing was already covered in the previous reading activity. The teacher shows one group some four pictures of one hotel (see appendix XII). They are supposed to write a brochure description connected with type of accommodation in the pictures. Then the teacher tells the second group the type of clientele which is going to spend a few weeks in this hotel. This group do not see the pictures, they only know the age of the couple and their interests. They try to write a brochure accommodation descriptio according two pieces of information. The teacher may choose a couple of sixty with very wealthy background, interested in 36

various sports activities, exotic food, fauna and flora and history. Luxurious hotel should be their destination. If there is a problem with vocabulary they have an opportunity to ask the teacher for explanation and what is more each group has a bilingual dictionary. After that the second group read a description of their clientele, that means hotel location, facilities, services or further additional information. Before showing the pictures the first group try to guess their age and interest. Then the pictures and pieces of information are covered. English word spelling t o prevent this, more written activities are suitable. Students should realize the importance of correct spelling. 37

2.4. Vocabulary in English for Specific Purposes. The importance of the teaching of vocabulary in ESP is now widely accepted . Our major concern will be with what is referred to in EAP as semi- technical vocabulary (or occasionally sub-technical vocabulary) and in EBP as core business vocabulary. In discussing the teaching of ESP it has often been said the teaching of technical vocabulary is not the responsibility of the EAP teacher and that priority should be given to the teaching of 'semi-technical' or 'core vocabulary'. We believe that this idea oversimplifies the true situation and we will therefore begin by discussing the teaching of technical vocabulary briefly before moving on to discuss the definition and teaching of semi-technical and core business vocabulary in some detail. We believe that the situation with regard to the teaching of technical vocabulary is rather more complicated than the simple notion that 'the ESP teacher should not touch it'. While in general we agree that it should not be the responsibility of the ESP teacher to teach technical vocabulary, in certain specific contexts it may be the duty of the ESP teacher to check that learners have understood technical vocabulary appearing as carrier content for an exercise. It may also be necessary to ensure that learners have understood technical language presented by a subject specialist or assumed to be known by a subject specialist (note emphasis). In any ESP exercise which exploits a particular context, that context will use certain technical vocabulary. It is important that both the teacher and the learners appreciate that this vocabulary is acting as carrier content for an exercise, and is not the real content of the exercise. However, students usually need to be able to understand the technical vocabulary in order to do the exercise. In some circum stances a term will be cognate with the equivalent term in the students' first language and will not therefore cause difficulty. Let us assume that the carbon cycle in biology is being used as carrier content. Both carbon and cycle and something similar to the noun compound carbon cycle may exist 38

in the students' Li although it may reverse the order (for example ciclo de carbono in Spanish). The only difficulty may be with pronunciation, as, for example, with the pronunciation of cycle in English (saikl) compared with that in most other languages . In ESAP and ESBP situations where the subject specialist is not present, for example a one-to-one consultation, the language teacher will need to adopt a questioning role about technical vocabulary. Has the learner fully understood the term? If not, how can s/he check the meaning? This will involve the use of technical dictionaries or other such sources. An example is the use in medical writing of the expression 'the patient presented with the symptoms of this may sound unnatural and ungrammatical to the non-expert, but is in fact normal in Medical English. In some situations learners starting a new academic course or profes sional training programme will need help with technical vocabulary that is completely new for them. One way to prepare learners for such a situation is for the language teacher and the subject expert to prepare a glossary of new terms with straightforward explanations of the terms. Houghton reports how she collaborated with the teacher of accounting to produce a specialist in-house dictionary designed for students new to accounting . While most ESP literature agrees on the need for teaching such vocabulary, there is not yet a satisfactory definition of the concept. Baker lists six categories of vocabulary, all of which relate to EAP. They are: 1. items which express notions general to all specialised disciplines; 2. general language items that have a specialised meaning in one or more disciplines; 3. specialised items that have different meanings in different disciplines; 4. general language items that have restricted meanings in different disciplines; 39

5. general language items that are used to describe or comment on technical processes or functions in preference to other items with the same meaning, for example occur rather than happen; 6. items used to signal the writer's intentions or evaluation of material presented. 9 We would suggest that the six categories overlap very considerably and that there seem to be two broad areas: vocabulary that is used in general language but has a higher frequency of occurrence in scientific and technical description and discussion and vocabulary that has specialised and restricted mean ings in certain disciplines and which may vary in meaning across disciplines. See the examples. Vocabulary Type of Vocabulary Examples General vocabulary that has a academic: factor, method, function, occur, higher frequency in a specific field cycle; evaluative adjectives such as relevant, important, interesting; tourism:verbs such as accept, advise, agree, confirm; collocations, such as make a booking, launch a campaign General English words that have a bug in computer science; force, acceleration specific meaning in certain and energy in physics; stress and strain in disciplines mechanics and engineering In terms of teaching ESP, it is the first category that should be given priority, and this is the area that we shall refer to as semi-technical or core business vocabulary. The specialised uses of general vocabulary in specific disciplines we would regard as an aspect of technical vocabulary. Semi-technical vocabulary can also be defined through the use of computer-based corpora. The teaching of vocabulary in ESP follows similar general principles to those in EGP. It is important to distinguish between 9 40

vocabulary needed for comprehension and that needed for production. In comprehension, deducing the meaning of vocabulary from the context and from the structure of the actual word is the most important method of learning new vocabulary. For production purposes, storage and retrieval arc significant. Various techniques have been suggested for storing vocabu lary: the use of word association, mnemonic devices and loci , that is the use of visual images to help remember a word . Different learners favour different techniques, and it is important that teachers encourage learners to find out what works best for them. Each of these techniques involves cognitive processing rather than mechanical learning of lists. There are three ways in which vocabulary may be gathered to facilitate cognitive . Research into vocabulary learning has also suggested that learners do not store vocabulary as individual words, but as chunks of language. We will refer to these chunks as lexical phrases, short set phrases that are frequently used in certain situations. In ESP, phrases such as the table suggests that ..., as shown in the diagram, sales fell sharply' are examples. It is believed that these lexical phrases tie in very well with the ideas about the predictability of genres as outlined in the next section. To express certain moves, a number of lexical phrases can be identified and taught. For example, expressions such as sales fell sharply , are very useful in the description of data in a discussion section of an academic article, or thesis, or in a business presentation. We do not advocate the unthinking learning of set phrases to express the moves in genres, but there is no reason why we cannot introduce a range of lexical phrases to provide learners with a number of options for expressing moves when teaching speaking or writing. Indeed, when learners have a limited need for English in certain predictable situations, the learning of key lexical phrases may provide a very quick road to the proficiency required of that situation . 41

There is given example activity for improving vocabulary skills of students studying in tourism field. Hotel Paros Philoxenia The aims are to practise reading and translating skills with bilingual dictionaries, to involve speaking skills with using special vocabulary of studying branch and reading comprehension Aids: Text (see appendix XI), dictionaries for group. Activity: Aloud reading Level of English: Pre-intermediate, Intermediate Interaction: Group work Before reading the text they will do a warming-up activity. The students will be asked a series of questions concerning hotel management and industry (see questionnaire) to be more prepared for following reading. For reading itself the teacher may choo se a brochure description of the hotel Paros Philoxenenia in Greece. The text contains some important information concerning hotel location, accommodation and possible hotel services and facilities. Although the text is not difficult to understand. the teacher pre-writes some words, e.g. cool off on the blackboard to make sure that everything is clear. Vocabulary concerning hotel facilities should be already pretaught and discussed in the lesson of word study so students are supposed to know it. Each student read a part of the text aloud and translate it immediately after that. They can choose this typical way of reading because it is sure that every possible language problems are discussed aloud in the class. After that the teacher asks students some questions relating to the text, e.g.: “What information can you find about location?“ “What about atmosphere ?“ “Could you tell me something about entertainment and local facilities?“ They discuss them in the group. Then the teacher writes three general questions referring to the article on the blackboard as well. Who would you recommend this hotel to and why? If you read the advertisement are there any missing information? Which hotel facilities are useless for your holidays? 42

The teacher gives them some time to think about it and then they discuss it together. It is recommended to pre-write the questions on the blackboard. Pronunciation of some words and their meanings. To prevent this, those words are pre-written on the blackboard and discussed together before reading. Activity: British versus American English Aims: To practise differences between British and American vocabulary and using the monolingual dictionary. Aids: Questionnaire (see appendix VIII), handout (see appendix X), monolingualdictionaries. Activity: Filling the missing word Level of English: Intermediate. Interaction: Individual, pair work In one of previous lessons some essential differences between American and British English should be discussed. They spoke about spelling, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Students were informed about some words in Britain and America with the same meaning but different spelling. They did several activities, e.g. matching the words that go together, filling missing words into the text. They used flashcards to learn new vocabulary so that is why students are already aware of differences between British and American vocabulary. So the aim is not to teach but practise that vocabulary. The teacher tells students to look at their questionnaires (see appendix VIII) question four. There are five requests made in British English. They have a list with the same requests but there are missing some words. They have to replace underlined words for American ones with the same meaning. The requests in the list are not in the same order so they have to match them with those in the questionnaire. Students should have known appropriate expressions from the previous lesson. If they do not know all words there is a possibility of using dictionary to look up the meaning and find the American equivalent. 43

Possible problems: Some problems in spelling and pronunciation that is why most words are also written on the blackboard and pronounced aloud in the class. Word study. Using pictures Aims: To teach new vocabulary concerning hotel services and facilities, practise pronunciation and spelling, to be able to explain meaning of the word with using paraphrases. To practise students expressing in English. Aids: Flashcards, list of symbols (see appendix IX) Activity: Hotel facilities - vocabulary Level of English: Intermediate Interaction: Individual, group work. Before starting the teacher asks students some warming-up questions about hotels, e.g. “Which types of hotels do you like to stay in and why?“ “What is your own experience with accommodation in foreign countries and is it comparable with the Uzbek Republic?“ “Which hotels facilities do you know and which of them are necessary for you?“ they discuss those questions together. Students usually know well known facilities, e.g. parking, swimming-pool, solarium, bar, laundry, TV room etc. After that the teacher shows students flashcards of the hotel facilities symbols. Some of them may be unknown. She puts the card up and if they know they say: “car park“, “fitness.“. She/ he writes a word on the blackboard to make sure they know the correct spelling as well as pronunciation. Then she puts up a symbol of jacuzzi which is not so clear for them. They say: “It looks like a man on boat.“ She says : “Yes, you are right it has a connection with water.“ “The water is hot that is why it is also called hot tub.“ “It is good for people to relax.“ “The letter J presents the first letter in the word.“ they go step by step she/he gives students additional information and they guess the meaning of the symbol. If the meaning is not covered she/ he tells students the word and write it down on the blackboard. They practise correct pronunciation. They go through all symbols this way. 44

Then she/he distributes a list of hotel facilities symbols (see appendix) to students. She/he writes numbers next to each picture and asked students: T: What facility is number seven? S: It’s bar. T: Yes, perfect. What about number twelve? S: It’s a jacuzzi. They practise all facilities this way. Then she / he tells students to make two groups. They are going to play a suitcase. Students already know it. She stands behind each group. Student stands in front of his/her group. I put a flashcard up and he/she tries to explain a symbol to the group. He/she can not use Uzbek , German language and gestures. If the group guesses it they have a point. They practise new vocabulary again in a more interesting way. Possible problems: Some students are shy and do not like speaking in front of the class. Play suitcase is not only good for practising new vocabulary but it helps to use students imagination, vocabulary knowledge, the way of expressing. Actually, they play a game and practise vocabulary in the same time. I usually tell them that the group which loses has some special homework or on the other hand the group that wins gets some special prize to be more motivated. Word study. Using translation – hotel facilities vocabulary Aims: To teach new vocabulary concerning hotel facilities and practise using the bilingual dictionary. Aids: Handout (see appendix VII), dictionaries. Activity: Finding out the odd word Level of English: Intermediate Interaction: Individual, pair work. Before starting the teacher asks students which hotels facilities do they know. They usually know typical ones e.g. parking, swimming-pool, solarium, bar, laundry, TV room. Then she/he distributes students a list with unknown words (see appendix VI) concerning hotel facilities and they are supposed to find the words in dictionary, translate them and circle the odd ones. Students has already used the bilingual dictionary during his/her studies so she/he does not have to introduce to them. They can work in pairs or 45

individually. Then they check the exercise together. The teacher reads each word they repeat it after me to make sure they pronounce it correctly. They translate them and tell me the odd ones. Possible problems: Students tend to translate the word without looking up all possible meanings of the word. To prevent this, working with dictionaries more often is welcomed. Although students are used to work with dictionaries it is quite time demanding activity. In general, students do not like working with dictionaries much. It is boring for them and they admit they usually use a dictionary on internet because it is quicker and easier. 46

Conclusion In today’s postindustrial society services have the greatest importance in meeting human needs. In sector of services, tourism plays an important role. In order to ensure the quality of hospitality services it is necessary to find common language between supply and demand sides. Since English has become an international language, it has become increasingly necessary for employees working in tourism to develop the language skills to be able to fulfil the requirements of tourists. Furthermore, globalization has increased competition in tourism markets, and destinations are exposed to tough price competition on homogenized products by rivals worldwide. Given these challenges and the desire by locales for sustainable tourism development, human resource development is critical to the success of tourism in many markets. There is a growing acknowledgement that economies of the 21st century need to be knowledge based rather than commodity based and be driven by knowledge development innovation and commercialization. Experience economy and creative industries develop and sell products of experience based on creative labour. In today's tourism world only institutions with providing a platform for developing and producing the newly emerging globalized skills (management and language) can evaluate its potentials in the name of tourism. In the European hospitality and tourism management education management and language skills are the bases in communication on the tourism market . Future hotel and tourism industry needs educational establishments that provide hospitality management courses and language training. It is now at a point where there is a sufficient base of theory that it can easily move well beyond vocational training and expose students to a wide range of ideas, knowledge and theory. The key challenge therefore, for tourism and hospitality education is not to stay with narrow vocationalism simply to satisfy the employments needs of industry but to harness the development of the knowledge that will provide a contribution to the successful development of tourism and hospitality industry as a whole. Tourism and hospitality management education is one segment of the larger tourism and 47

hospitality industry. It could be argued that the formal preparation of industry professionals, via tourism and hospitality education programs, is the single most important segment. Also, provision of foreign languages courses and the distance learning programs are dominant factors of methodical tourism education approach. During the past 20 years, the explosion in business and communications technology has revolutionized the field of English language teaching, and has radically shifted the attention Of course designers from teaching English for Academic purposes to teaching English for more specialized purposes. In the last few years, first and second language acquisition research into language teaching have led to an increased interest in investigating the most effective ways of improving the ability of workers in using English for specific purposes (ESP) in the workplace. Several recent studies of ESP have provided evidence of the importance of teaching English for specific purposes. The aim of this study is to investigate the students and employees perception of their ability to speak, read, listen and write in English. By conducting this research we want to discover their motivations to learn English and determine the obstacles and other difficulties in developing necessary language skills. Dudley ‐ Evans and St. John (1998) state that the teaching process of any kind of language for specific purposes (ESP) should take as a starting pint the analysis of the four traditional skills within an appropriate context, that being, as far as possible, the conditions given in the workplace. Moreover, they subscribe to the idea that an effective syllabus must attempt to overcome the deficiencies of the educational system under which they are operating. ESP therefore encircles a reaction against the conventional humanistic approach wherein both teachers and students abide by the academic objective of knowing everything about the language being studied instead of concentrating attention on those skills most relevant within the workplace in the time allotted in the educational environment. As English is considered the lingua franca of the twenty-first century, everyone needs to have a good command of English today and the importance of teaching 48

English for professional uses and particularly in the field of tourism is undeniable. English proficiency is required in all professional areas but it becomes essential in the tourist industry because of its specific characteristics.. English Language has played an important role in the development of tourism and in this field, English is used widely for travel as well as in client contact and is of outmost interest at the tertiary level. But its interest should not be restricted to tourism students: English for tourism is one of the most attractive areas of English for Specific Purposes(ESP) because, after all, all of us are tourists on various occasions nowadays. English is the fourth most widely spoken native language in the world, and in terms of sheer number of speakers, it is the most spoken official language. It is the primary language used in international affairs having official status even in nations where it is not the primary spoken language. English is indisputably the primary language of global trade and commerce and tourism since in many countries, most tourism authorities and other officials in contact with the public speak English to interact and engage with tourists and immigrants. The advancement of business and communication technology in the course of past twenty years has revolutionized the field of English language teaching and has radically swerved the attention of course designers from teaching English for Academic purposes to teaching for more specialized purposes, English for Specific Purposes(ESP) The teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) falls within the framework of what is generally called English for Specific Purposes (ESP), taking place in essence, and as its name suggests, in an educational environment. The reasons for its increasing relevance is due to the fact that English has changed from simply being another foreign language into having become a universal form of communication in all walks of life. English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) is more general compared 49

to ESP because it does not focus on the specific job disciplines but it is more based on general basic skills required by students in order to be prepared for the workforce. Examples of basic skills in EOP are the same as in ESP: reading, writing, listening and speaking. “ English for specific purposes is a term that refers to teaching or studying English for a particular career(like law, medicine) or for business in general”(International Teacher Training Organization, 2005). Pauline C.Robinson(1989) describes ESP as a type of ELT(English Language Teaching) and defines it as “goal-oriented language learning” which means that students have to attain a specific goal in the process of learning. According to the same author, “Students study ESP not because they are interested in the English language as such but because they have to perform a task in English. Their command of the English language must be such that they can reach a satisfactory level in their specialist subject studies”(p.396) The term "specific" in ESP refers to the specific purpose for learning English. Students approach the study of English through a field that is already known and relevant to them. This means that they are able to use what they learn in the ESP classroom right away in their work and studies.. ESP assesses needs and integrates motivation, subject matter and content for the teaching of relevant skills. As a matter of fact, ESP combines subject matter and English language teaching. Such a combination is highly motivating because students are able to apply what they learn in their English classes to their main field of study, whether it be accounting, business management, economics, computer science or tourism. Being able to use the vocabulary and structures that they learn in a meaningful context reinforces what is taught and increases their motivation. Hutchinson and Waters too draw the attention to a “learning –centered approach” “in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning. An ESP program is therefore built on an assessment of purposes and needs and the functions for which English is required . The aim of ESP courses is to equip the learners with a certain English proficiency level for a situation where the language is going to be used, i.e., target needs (Sujana, 2005) . A number of ESP 50

researchers have argued that as language in different context varies, methods and contents of second language teaching should vary to meet the needs of learners in specific situations(Hutchinson &Waters, 1987).According to the same authors, three terms can be used to explain “needs”: ”necessities”, “wants” and “lacks”. They define “necessities” as the type of need determined by the demands of the target situation, that is, what the learner should know in order to work effectively and efficiently in the target situation. ESP concentrates more on language in context than on teaching grammar and language structures. It covers subjects varying from accounting or computer science to tourism and business management. English for Tourism Among the many vocational areas that make the world of English for specific purposes, that of English for tourism is one of the most attractive because all of us are tourists on countless occasions, bringing our own real experiences to the classrooms. Such a program, might, for example, emphasize the development of reading skills in students who are preparing for graduate work in business administration; or it might promote the development of spoken skills in students who are studying English in order to become tourist guides. The focal point of teaching English for tourism is that English is not taught as a subject separated from the students' real world ; instead, it is integrated into a subject matter area important to the learners. In the field of English for tourism students most of the studies have focused on the analysis of the required skills and needs in work place, adequacy and appropriateness of instructional materials and strategies. Al-Khatib (2007) examined the communicative needs of tourism and banking personnel by shedding lights on their perceptions of needs, wants, lacks, and attitudes toward English in order to include what is needed and exclude what deemed less important to them. It has been observed that the type of work plays a significant role in evaluating and using of English. The most common reasons for communicating as a travel agency worker were found to be offering destination guides, writing and sending email and faxes, making on-line ticketing, browsing the internet, making online hotel booking, etc. Travel agency users were found 51

to be heavier users of English than their banking counterparts. The results of the study indicated that the most important skill for tourism personnel is writing. When instructing an EOP course an issue to take into consideration is that using adequate language learning and professional strategies are required in tourism field). In designing a course for students of culture and tourism, Barancic (1998) used an integrated approach to get the students involved in the syllabus he wanted to teach. The approach he invented consisted of 8components: knowing the class and their knowledge, determining the goals to achieve, the way we measure the success, making decisions with students involved, creating syllabus, deciding on the real teaching techniques and method and getting feedback during the course. The application of the approach indicated that the teachers are faced with needs which are of a less academic and more realistic nature. Students of tourism should be aware of the enormous importance of English in their education because it is an essential tool in any field of their future activity: management, tourist information, promotion of tourist destinations, intermediary companies, hospitality and transportation, etc .Consequently, students of tourism should be highly motivated to learn English and although more often they will probably focus on oral rather than written skills, in their career they must be able to elaborate written documents such as letters or budgets, they should keep telephone conversations, make presentations to audiences, attend fairs and conferences and understand all types of written information on tourist destinations. For example, students of tourism can be taught practical English conversation used in hotel and catering industry, various issues concerning tourism industry , tips on job interviews and writing resumes , reading and understanding articles concerning such issues of tourism. This is due to the students’ desire to improve speaking English and their need to learn English for future jobs rather than using it in everyday life. Good material should be based on various interesting texts and activities providing a range of skills, one piece of material serving for developing more than one skill, e.g. reading, listening, speaking, writing. Texts as learning materials can be used for learning and 52

practicing a wide range of skills. In ESP course, they can be sources for new vocabulary, communicative or reading skills. They can trigger various activities: warming –up activities(pre-teaching and activation of new vocabulary or grammar structures, discussing questions concerning the topic);receptive activities-work with the text itself, reading, listening(various reading strategies e.g. aloud, quiet, skimming, scanning, with or without translation, informative; productive activities-practising of acquired knowledge, follow-up activities-next improving, developing, using of acquired knowledge. In conclusion, carefully identified needs and appropriate teaching materials for tourism students will produce not only satisfied customers but also plenty of professional fulfillment in their future career.
