INTRODUCTION From the first days of the independence in Uzbekistan root reforms began in all spheres of life of the country. Since that upbringing and educating of young generation has been of the basic priorities of our country and it is in the centre of focus of the government. Education had to be reoriented to words meeting the common national interest and ensuring competitiveness in the world market. Uzbekistan became a member of the International community and was keen to develop a modern system of education. Numerous state documents including laws about ‘The program for personnel training’ (1997) and ‘About Education’ (1997) were adopted and since then reforms have been realizing to prepare young generation to cope with the rapidly occurring changes toward a more global society / as for modernism the foreign language educational systems of the country the 1 st president of Uzbekistan I.A. Karimov initiated the decree ‘About measures on enhancement of the system of studying foreign languages’ in 2012 in order to strengthen the system and research skills and international effect of future specialists in the field of linguistic and literature 1 . To meet the need of the national standards graduates must develop their language competence to have opportunities to find positions in all spheres of life to contribute to the development of their countries and the worked. Efficiency of measures to carry out the government’s reforms depends on different reasons including presence of qualified personnel creation and conformity of the system of university education. To foster the process of the integration of education and production, we must pay greater attention to universities in solving educational and social problems. English as a foreign language teaching is becoming increasingly important in all aspects of Uzbek life for social, as global communication. recreational has been found to improve reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, and grammatical development. Lack of literacy skills including reading causes problems for living, working and survival in general. Through reading, we acquire new ideas and knowledge, obtain needed information, relax the minds, and improve our command of language and vocabulary. The general trend of reading is for examinations rather than for information or pleasure. Research has proven that the mainstream of readers is students reading books for examinations rather than knowledge and pleasure. In my diploma work I will attempt to show the readings trends and relate the importance of reading and conditioning this behaviour towards a habitual way of life amongst students. Certain past and current research will be used as a platform to provide solutions to improve and increase the intensity of reading amongststudents. The paper concludes that some of the methods of improving reading among students participation in classes, homework to improve reading comprehension developing the survey, question, read, recite and review (SQ3R) method and peer teaching. The holy grail of reading begins at home as parents promote the reading skill and later into a habit for their children. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on reading instruction in higher education. In an effort to improve the quality of instruction, much research has been conducted to break down and understand the complex process of reading. Learning to read and then improve and sustain reading skills involves a variety of interconnected elements. These include students’ attitudes to reading and motivation to read for enjoyment. All these will be quite impossible if our people, especially the young, do not cultivate good reading habits. We have been told about critical thinking skills, managerial skills, public speaking skills, but hardly do we consider reading skills. Reading is an aspect associated with literacy. However, the reading process is not simple in its nature. It does not merely involve recognizing a single character and pronouncing it correctly or to recognize and pronounce a few characters that are

arranged in a particular manner, but more importantly it is the ability to understand the meaning of these arrangements. Public attention has been drawn to the growing problem of non-reading specifically among the students. Reading is regarded as a process, a mode of thinking, a kind of real experience and involves many complex skills: the ability to perceive printed words, to skim for information and then perhaps read intensively. With almost everyone in Uzbekistan owning a data based computer or phone, digital reading is much easier to access rather than the “hard copy” books which are costlier and occupy space. But why our young people are not reading enough and how do we inculcate the reading habits amongst them especially conditioning the younger generation to have a passion for reading. Research has proven that our people are poor readers especially adults whilst children prefer to read in preparing for their examinations rather than read for entertainment and acquiring knowledge. However, I believe that I am offering a foundation that will promote student learning by fostering effective classroom teaching and providing a solid framework for in-depth study in ESL teaching area. Actuality of the theme: the problem of searching for effective reading strategies, technologies and teaching aids of ESL students’ training. Taking into consideration the organization of teaching foreign languages, it is necessary to notice the importance of the carried research works, the problem of applying speaking, writing, listening and especially reading strategies, that to read real authentic materials in origin in the field of English language teaching and developing special approach need to be researched. The purpose of the work: to provide the tools that will enable teachers to plan, implement, and assess effectively. The second is to provide teachers with the latest research on teaching reading by using new pedagogical technics and describe implications of this research for classroom practice. The purpose for reading also determines the appropriate approach to reading comprehension. A person who needs to know whether she can afford to eat at a

particular restaurant needs to comprehend the pricing information provided on the menu, but does not need to recognize the name of every appetizer listed. A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the words the poet uses and the ways they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and supporting details. However, a person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know the vocabulary that is used, understand the facts and cause-effect sequences that are presented, and recognize ideas that are presented as hypotheses and givens. The object of the graduation work: process of training students to foreign language s as the second important language in our country. The subject of the graduation work: the strategies of improving r eading skills and reading approaches. Research objective of the graduation work is to examine various theories, methods, approaches and strategies. The graduation work is intended to be a source for ESL teachers in providing ideas for ways to incorporate these strategies into their lesson plans. Scientific novelty of the project work:  Identifying strategies in Reading for enrich vocabulary knowledge.  Defining the importance of using effective reading strategies in ESL classes, that to differentiate types of texts.  Defin ing how reading strategies can be used to support the process of English language learning in ESL classes. Practical value of the graduation work consists of giving us a better understanding about effective reading strategies and approaches to foreign language development that can be employed to meet the needs of a new generation growing up within an increasingly globalized world. The structure of the research work consists of the paper of Introduction: - explain the importance, purpose, significance and the objectives of the present work. After the introduction, the research work engages with contemporary references and research on teacher effectiveness throughout the Reading strategies. The chapters include significant materials on teaching reading strategies in the

classroom. I have attempted to produce methods that are more practical and applicable to classroom teaching. Additional revised and expanded activities, examples, and exercises are offered. The graduation work offers Reading strategies for addressing ESL class. The work contains conclusion and the list of used references. The purpose of this study was to uncover reading problems facing ESL students in the middle school classroom and non-philological academic lyceums and collages. Research questions focused on the needs of the ESL students, the factors that influence their learning, and the problems the teachers face in supporting these students. Data sources included teacher and student interviews, classroom observations, and survey. Data showed that the students face challenges in learning to read in the English language, the culture, and curricular content using their limited English. The study concluded that several important challenges for teachers and learners exist, reading strategies, including time, language support, and knowledge. This research brings broader understanding of strategies for teaching English reading to students whose first language is not English. The rationale for the study stems from the need to gain greater international perspective of the teaching of English learners. Results reflect analysis of classroom observation field notes, face-to-face interviews. The theoretical framework for this study draws from Collier's Conceptual Model, Acquiring a Second Language, explaining the complex interacting factors students experience when acquiring a second language, and the work of Dorothy Strickland outlining effective literacy instruction. This paper also describes an extensive reading program conducted in two rural secondary or middle schools, aimed at motivating the students to read extensively in English and helping them overcome their problems in understanding English texts as a means towards increasing their proficiency in the language. The paper discusses the rationale for extensive reading for students in rural schools, the aims and features of the reading program, the materials used, as well as the perceptions of students undergoing the program. The problems faced by the students in

understanding texts written in English are particularly highlighted, and implications drawn for the successful implementation of extensive reading programs in ESL classes.

CHAPTER I. APPROACHES OF DESCRIBING A ND ANALYZING READING STRATEGIES B1 students 1.1. Theoretical review on Learning strategies in teaching foreign languages . In the tough competitive world today, much of the success depends upon the communicative competence of the professionals. Apart from technical skills, communicative skills also carry an equal importance. In today’s world, where the students would be competing for job positions with a global workforce, it would be their English language proficiency that would be tested to the maximum, as English is the most widely spoken language. Language learning is a skill based learning and educational institutions need to train up its students in the skills that would help them build up a career in the corporate world A teaching strategy is the method used to deliver information in the classroom, online, or in some other medium. Effective teaching strategies help to activate students' curiosity about a class topic, engage students in learning, develop critical thinking skills, keep students on task, engender sustained and useful classroom interaction, and, in general, enable and enhance the learning of course content. The goal of a teaching strategy is to facilitate learning, to motivate learners, to engage them in learning, and to help them focus. There is no one best strategy; we can select from several instructional strategies for just about any subject. It is important to vary instruction not only to keep the students' interest, but also to allow them to interact with content in a variety of ways that appeal to various learning styles. A teaching strategy comprises the principles and methods used for instruction. Commonly used teaching methods may include lecture, class participation, demonstration, project-based learning, or memorization, but some combination of these usually results in the most effective strategy; that is, a strategy that engages a diversity of learning styles through varied instruction. The choice of teaching strategy or strategies to be used depends largely on the

information or skill that is being taught, and it may also be influenced by the learning style, aptitude, skills, and enthusiasm of the students. The taxonomic nature of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) inevitably means trying to handle the great complexity of human language by breaking language competence down into separate components. This confronts us with psychological and pedagogical problems of some depth. Communication calls upon the whole human being. The competences separated and classified below interact in complex ways in the development of each unique human personality. Users and learners of a language draw upon a number of competences developed in the course of their previous experience in order to carry out the tasks and activities required to deal with the communicative situations in which they are involved. In return, participation in communicative events (including, of course, those events specifically designed to promote language learning) results in the further development of the learner’s competences, for both immediate and long-term use. In that sense, all human competences contribute in one way or another to the language user’s ability to communicate and may be regarded as aspects of communicative competence. When we use strategies that exploit multiple intelligences we can bring students of different strengths and preferences together, giving them all the chance to share their expertise, and to develop their 'weaker' intelligences by learning alongside fellow students who are 'stronger' in these areas. Learning in this way can do wonders for students' self-esteem, as they see themselves valued by their peers. Strategies that exploit multiple intelligences focus on teaching for understanding, in other words what students can do rather than highlight what they can't do. This contributes to positive educational experiences, which is a strong precursor to successful learning in life. Teachers can use the findings from research into 'different learning styles' to plan and implement imaginative classroom programs that include a wide range of learning techniques so that all students over time can access information in their preferred learning style, but at the same time can become familiar with other learning styles. Learners need, perhaps, to develop

other 'learning muscles' to make them stronger, in the same way as physical muscles in the body can be developed to enhance performance. Many learners already can and do access information naturally through multiple learning styles, and offering a wide variety of learning modes enhances learning for these students. The way forward with 'different learning styles' in the classroom The real challenge for teachers is to find the right contexts and combinations that give all students the chance to excel by using those strategies which are their strengths and by developing their so-called 'weaker' learning skills so that they get better at using them. The real benefit of using different ways of learning is that when we offer a variety and range of learning activities we make the activities more inherently interesting and motivating. The saying, 'Variety is the spice of life' holds true for learning at any stage. Important considerations learning is a complex matrix - it may be best for teachers to think of learning strategies as a toolkit to provide effective learning experiences, taking account of the wider picture shown by research into learning, not simply to focus on VAK; this is not quite a 'pick'n mix' approach but teachers can systematically use features that different learning strategies offer to provide a rich and varied curriculum to all learners; all learners need to see how valuable it is to use all modes of learning: the real secret to learning is to know the most effective way to learn in any given circumstances, and the most valued people in the world beyond school will be those who can learn in a range of different ways, knowing which is the most appropriate mode to use in given situations; we need to show students how to use learning strategies, or more accurately learning strengths, which means we need to talk explicitly about learning, we need to give them a language to explain how people learn and to describe the contribution different styles of learning can make teachers need to make it happen. We need to explain to students the need to go beyond relying on learning simply happening by itself: learners need to be proactive and make it happen so we need to help them develop the personal qualities as well as the skills required for successful learning, such as resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness,

responsiveness, reasoning and remembering, that researchers such as Alastair Smith and Guy Claxton 1 have highlighted as important qualities that successful learners display. We owe it to our students Whatever we call them, 'different learning styles', 'different learning strengths' or 'multiple learning strategies', we owe it to all our students, perhaps in the 21st century more than ever before, to help them see that not only can they learn in many different ways but also they must be able to learn in different ways if they are going to be able to cope with the information evolution they are living through. In 2000, adult EFL professionals at the Center for Applied Linguistics compiled an annotated bibliography that can provide a starting point for those interested in research and theory related to adults learning to read in a second language. In 2001, Rebecca Adams and Miriam Burt compiled Research on Reading Development of Adult English Language Learners: An Annotated Bibliography, which was developed to present a comprehensive view of the research that has been conducted on reading development among adult English language learners in the United States (and other English speaking countries) in the last 20 years. In 2003, Miriam Burt, Joy Kreeft Peyton, and Rebecca Adams wrote Reading and Adult English Language Learners: A Review of the Research. Incorporating technology in adult EFL instruction is no longer just a question of whether or not to do it. As a field, we are quickly moving to the question of "How?". Using technology in the classroom can take a variety of forms. It may involve incorporating the viewing of a video or television program in a lesson on intercultural interactions or asking learners to create audio recordings of a dialogue between an employer and an employee discussing a grievance. It may mean having learners work individually or in groups on a software program or participate in project-based activities that utilize sites on the World Wide Web. Technology is involved in all these examples. Choosing among the range of options and integrating the choice effectively becomes the challenge. It is important to seriously consider your objectives in incorporating technology in your teaching. You may want to bring authenticity or variety to the language and content that you

are teaching. You may want to better motivate your learners, tapping into their interest in things like current videos, software programs, or computers in general. According CEFR I can darely say that learners ESL classes can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency of everyday or job- related language; they can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters; they can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints or they can understand contemporary literary prose. And also they c an read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes, and using appropriate reference sources selectively. Has a broad active reading vocabulary, but may experience some difficulty with low frequency idioms. You can continue list of what “Can do” statements according reading strategies what learners of ESL classes, for example: they can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interest with a satisfactory level of comprehension; can understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters well enough to correspond regularly with a pen friend; can understand basic types of standard routine letters and faxes (enquiries, orders, letters of confirmation etc.) on familiar topics. In short, they can also find and understand relevant information in everyday material, such as letters, brochures and short official documents; 1.2 Reading Purpose and Reading Comprehensioncan find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus, reference lists and timetables; can locate specific information in lists and isolate the information required (e.g. use the ‘Yellow Pages’ to find a service or tradesman).

Traditionally, the purpose of learning to read in a language has been to have access to the literature written in that language. In language instruction, reading materials have traditionally been chosen from literary texts that represent "higher" forms of culture. This approach assumes that students learn to read a language by studying its vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, not by actually reading it. In this approach, lower level learners read only sentences and paragraphs generated by textbook writers and instructors. The reading of authentic materials is limited to the works of great authors and reserved for upper level students who have developed the language skills needed to read them. The communicative approach to language teaching has given instructors a different understanding of the role of reading in the language classroom and the types of texts that can be used in instruction. When the goal of instruction is communicative competence, everyday materials such as train schedules, newspaper articles, and travel and tourism Web sites become appropriate classroom materials, because reading them is one way communicative competence is developed. Instruction in reading and reading practice thus become essential parts of language teaching at every level. Reading is an activity with a purpose. A person may read in order to gain information or verify existing knowledge, or in order to critique a writer's ideas or writing style. A person may also read for enjoyment, or to enhance knowledge of the language being read. The purpose(s) for reading guide the reader's selection of texts. The purpose for reading also determines the appropriate approach to reading comprehension. Reading research shows that good readers  Read extensively  Integrate information in the text with existing knowledge  Have a flexible reading style, depending on what they are reading  Are motivated  Rely on different skills interacting: perceptual processing, phonemic processing, recall  Read for a purpose; reading serves a function Reading is an interactive process that goes on between the reader and the text, resulting in comprehension. The text presents letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs that encode meaning. The reader uses knowledge, skills, and strategies to determine what that meaning is. Reader knowledge, skills, and strategies include  Linguistic competence: the ability to recognize the elements of the writing system; knowledge of vocabulary; knowledge of how words are structured into sentences  Discourse competence: knowledge of discourse markers and how they connect parts of the text to one another  Sociolinguistic competence: knowledge about different types of texts and their usual structure and content  Strategic competence: the ability to use top-down strategies, as well as knowledge of the language (a bottom-up strategy) The purpose(s) for reading and the type of text determine the specific knowledge, skills, and strategies that readers need to apply to achieve comprehension. Reading comprehension is thus much more than decoding. Reading comprehension results when the reader knows which skills and strategies are appropriate for the type of text, and understands how to apply them to accomplish the reading purpose.

Goals and Techniques for Teaching Reading Instructors want to produce students who, even if they do not have complete control of the grammar or an extensive lexicon, can fend for themselves in communication situations. In the case of reading, this means producing students who can use reading strategies to maximize their comprehension of text, identify relevant and non-relevant information, and tolerate less than word-by-word comprehension. The Reading Process. To accomplish this goal, instructors focus on the process of reading rather than on its product.  They develop students' awareness of the reading process and reading strategies by asking students to think and talk about how they read in their native language.  They allow students to practice the full repertoire of reading strategies by using authentic reading tasks. They encourage students to read to learn (and have an authentic purpose for reading) by giving students some choice of reading material.  When working with reading tasks in class, they show students the strategies that will work best for the reading purpose and the type of text. They explain how and why students should use the strategies.  They have students practice reading strategies in class and ask them to practice outside of class in their reading assignments. They encourage students to be conscious of what they're doing while they complete reading assignments.  They encourage students to evaluate their comprehension and self-report their use of strategies. They build comprehension checks into in-class and out-of-class reading assignments, and periodically review how and when to use particular strategies.  They encourage the development of reading skills and the use of reading strategies by using the target language to convey instructions and course-

related information in written form: office hours, homework assignments, test content.  They do not assume that students will transfer strategy use from one task to another. They explicitly mention how a particular strategy can be used in a different type of reading task or with another skill. By raising students' awareness of reading as a skill that requires active engagement, and by explicitly teaching reading strategies, instructors help their students develop both the ability and the confidence to handle communication situations they may encounter beyond the classroom. In this way they give their students the foundation for communicative competence in the new language. Reading perceives written in its logical forms. It means reading reproduces what is written. Written language differs from colloquial one. That is why a teacher has to choose such extracts for reading that the interaction "writing - reading" would not be difficult or disorientating the student. Reading techniques are both "silent reading" and "loud reading". Reading aloud is not the aim itself but a tool. It helps putting the right stress, improving the correct intonation. A weak student cannot as well as others students but he would not read at all alone. Taking into account arguments against loud reading, the teacher must choose a suitable material for loud reading. That can be newspaper news, short report, etc. Reading aloud, the student prepares himself to speaking because he accustoms to the audience which listens to him. Before students read aloud, the teacher can give some pre-reading exercises. After students got acquainted to the text, it is time to read aloud. Reading is a cognitive form of perception through printed word. It is an individual form. Taking into account communicative principles, in every case teacher has to explain why he reads the text. Students have to be motivated. Stimulation of reading develops a habit of reading in studying language and gives positive emotions. The teacher must to pay attention to a context or a text and choose such a text which corresponds to the age and interest of students. Reading must be purposeful when the student looks for the answer to the question which can be logical, which requires thinking about what is read. That can be

filling up charts, plans or diagrams. That can be continuing the text. If we need to consolidate some grammatical structure, we can give some extract where the student has to insert the required grammatical forms and understand the plot, as well. Not only understanding is important in reading. Every reading leads to some logical conclusions and emotional impressions. Every reading enriches the vocabulary. The teacher must connect what is read with the students' personal experience and personal emotional impressions. It can be a topic for discussions in theclass. 1.3. The main problems and ways of applying effective strategies in teaching reading. Reading is to the mind like running is to the body. If a person wants to exercise their mind, read a good book. Lamar Cole Reading is one of the most significant processes of our life. While reading we know and learn a number of words. The more you read the better you can get a lot of information. Grellet (1985) suggests that reading is assigning meaning and extracting information from written texts. Reading and its strategies are used in the class in order to make lesson easier and enhance reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge. In my diploma work I explained reading strategies and activities for young learners and adult learners. I gave a number of tasks and examples which contain reading and its strategies. Reading is considered an interactive process. Reading gives a lot of opportunities to learners such as knowing and understanding vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening, etc. There are a number of useful strategies and activities to introduce and teach reading skill in a foreign language. Let’s discuss young learners. Young learners- five to ten year olds can write and read only in their first language. Reading words, sentences, topics in target language is a bit difficult for them. Before giving reading tasks teacher should introduce pupils with

letters and sounds of target language. He/she teaches the alphabet and phonics. Teacher should demand to learn phonics and alphabets from learners on time. After acquiring phonics pupils are able to combine words and read. But it requires more practice and work. On the other hand children regularly don’t want to study, especially reading. In order to involve them teacher should use illustrations, stories, picture dictionaries, activities and games, pictures, worksheets, handouts, big books for shared reading in class, audio recordings, etc. Most of young learners are unable to read and write in target language for the first time. These mentioned things help them learn easily. Look and Say Look and Say is an effective reading strategy which used by teacher for primary learners. In this activity teacher uses some cards and by showing them teaches how to read correctly in target language. On the other hand words and phrases are written on the cards. In order not to confuse there are should be written only one word in one card, not a sentence. For example: an apple Teacher shows the card and says it with attention. Pupils are asked to repeat after him/her. Four or at least five new words are enough for one lesson. Besides reading correctly the new word on card they have a chance to learn it faster after repetition. By using cards teacher may organize other beneficial activities too, such as matching words and pictures. In this game teacher needs two cards. There are will be words on the first card and pictures on the second card. Teacher shows them to pupils and they are asked to match words with pictures. Because of game and interest young learners try to do exercise very well. In order to recognize new word learners need lots of practice. Teacher’s task is to make easy and interesting lesson and avoid reading the same things. Because young learners will lose their my mother

interest if they read the same things more than once. If words are written on the coloured cards they can easily recall and save them in memory for a long time. In order to consolidate learners’ reading skill and vocabulary teacher plans variety activities such as finding word families(or lexical sets) of words. It would be better if teacher use words or phrases which are familiar for learners. In this activity teacher collects a number of words which belong to one word or family. For example: names of birds, clothes, toys, kinds of colours, etc. Learners are asked to put these words in appropriate form: Table Birds Clothes Toys Food Matching sentences to picture Three or more pictures and sentences are given to pupils. Learners should be able to understand the meaning of sentences in order to match them with pictures. So teacher gives suitable sentences which are known for pupils. After reading and comprehending sentences learners are asked to match them. After finishing matching they read their examples turn by turn. Shared group reading Shared group reading is very enjoyable and interesting activity for young learners. While shared reading teacher uses Big Books. Because these books are especially written for group reading. First of all if there are any opportunities in the class teacher should rearrange the seat of pupils before starting the reading. Instead of chairs, sitting on the floor while shared reading is more comfortable and relaxed. On the other hand learners can move, act and imitate while reading. A number of researchers found that shared group reading is the best way to introduce reading as a fun and group activity. Not only reading, but listening skill will be improved by it too.

Reading a story Young learners love stories fairytales, coloured books. Especially they want to listen to interesting stories from teacher. Children gain more benefit from listening to story than other strategies. Reading a story is one of the most effective ways of creating friendly and real English atmosphere with pupils. While listening to story learners draw the pictures of the events in their mind, fantasy and they look forward to the ending of story. But in a reading story teacher cannot change the events of story. He/she reads turn by turn which is written on the book. Telling a story There is a difference between reading a story and telling a story. During the telling stories teachers don’t need Big Books in front of pupils. It is found that telling stories is clear understandable than reading stories. Moreover teacher can change, repeat the story freely. As it was mentioned in above seating arrangement of pupils should be comfortable. Because children may not feel comfortable when sitting in one place for 30 minutes without move and act. As it is known young learners like learning something through movement: acting, dancing, role-playing, touching, imitating. On the other hand they feel themselves more enjoyable and relaxed. In addition sitting arrangement cause the quality of the lesson. So during the telling stories there are will be enough opportunities to move easily: a big classroom with carpet, special place for sitting on the floor. Teacher should give enough time to learners in order *to choose a book *to look through the book *to observe the images, pictures of the book *to guess the context Reading aloud is a good way of checking pronunciation and stress of pupils. It also verifies vocabulary and introduces new words, phrases. Hubbard (1983) suggested that reading aloud is useful as a test of pronunciation and general fluency. Reading aloud motivates learners to learn and acquire language with interest. On the other hand most of young learners like reading aloud and it improves their pronunciation too. Choral reading. One of the useful reading aloud activity is choral reading . Teacher gives a reading passage to pupils and shows the intonation, major stress, pauses. First of all learners are asked to look through the passage with attention and teacher begins to read. The class repeats the passage in chorus after teacher. In order to verify learners’ pronunciation and intonation one member of class is ordered to read the passage on the blackboard without teacher. Dramatic reading. The next reading aloud activity is dramatic reading. Learners are given a text. If the text was written as a dialogue teacher allows learners to participate together. Teacher points the dialogue to each pupil and they are asked to read all characters of the dialogue. Dramatic reading helps learners how to communicate with one another and how to create real conversation. During the task learners’ intonation, pronunciation and stress are controlled by teacher. Reading without errors Reading aloud is a good and simple way of checking and correcting errors too. In this strategy teacher gives a text to learners and they are asked to read carefully and fluently without making mistakes. Other members of group are observers. One pupil begins to read. If the reader make mistakes while reading, any member of the class can stop him/her. The reader continues to read till stopped by someone. This

activity motivates learners to listen to with attention and find mistakes quickly, on the other hand pupils try not to do mistakes in order to be a good reader. Reading without errors not only improves learners’ reading comprehension but it also enhances their listening skill. Reading text based on child’s language. In this reading strategy teacher allows pupils to use their native language freely. And it is based on various pictures which are shown by teacher. After showing picture to learners they are asked to describe it. If learners have some difficulties on describing the picture in second language they may use their first language (young learners are unable lack of vocabulary). Then teacher translates pupils’ sentences into target language and writes them in the child’s book. After finishing teacher says the word in second language and pupils repeat the sentence after him/her. Moreover learners are asked to read sentences loudly with attention. In order to be easy and understandable for young learners teacher uses simple sentences, such as “She is my mother. She is young. She is my grandmother. She is old.” . Songs. Chants, rhymes, songs are useful and enjoyable for reading class. Some pupils love listening and singing songs together with choral. Without hesitation they repeat and imitate teacher’s word while singing. It helps them correct and develop pronunciation. Reading materials. Teaching foreign language is not easy process. In order to teach young learners and to achieve satisfied result there are will be useful and necessary materials which contain reading in the class. It can be reading cards, pictures, picture dictionaries, flashcards, reading box, etc. Reading cards- tell about the story or situation and pupils read it with interest and quickly. As it was mentioned visual materials motivate learners, especially young learners to learn language with enthusiasm. Not only text, but pictures also are given in the reading cards. Reading box- is a place where teacher and pupils collect reading materials. It may be learners’ writings, cartoons, storybooks, fairytales, newspaper, cards. Young learners like encouragement. And they are creative, they can draw pictures, make

house, car, plane by using papers. In order to motivate and encourage them teacher should keep their works in the reading box or should hang them on the wall. Flashcards- most of young learners cannot write and read in target language. In this case teacher uses flashcards in order to be understandable and easier for them. Especially colored flashcards which contain the theme make them happy and involve them acquiring and comprehending. A number of examples by using flashcards are given in above. Reading is not easy process for young learners. It requires knowledge and ability, different activities and games from teacher. Moreover teacher should be perfect person. In order to teach and interest young and naughty learners teacher should be a brilliant music teacher, kind and sometimes strict teacher, patient and happy teacher as ten year old pupils said. Before giving task and introduce materials teacher should get on well with pupils and especially teacher should respect his/her pupils. 2.2 Goals and Techniques for Teaching Reading Developing reading activities involves more than identifying a text that is "at the right level," writing a set of comprehension questions for students to answer after reading, handing out the assignment and sending students away to do it. A fully-developed reading activity supports students as readers through prereading, while-reading, and post-reading activities.As you design reading tasks, keep in mind that complete recall of all the information in a text is an unrealistic expectation even for native speakers. Reading activities that are meant to increase communicative competence should be success oriented and build up students' confidence in their reading ability. Make sure students understand what the purpose for reading is: to get the main idea, obtain specific information, understand most or all of the message, enjoy a story, or decide whether or not to read more. Recognizing the purpose for reading will help students select appropriate reading strategies.

Adult learners are able to read, speak and do exercises than primary learners. They are more knowledgeable. Moreover they have enough vocabulary to communicate, to do tasks individually and clearly. In order to enhance the quality of the lesson and to improve learners’ knowledge there are a number of reading strategies and activities are used by teachers during the class. These strategies are suitable for students’ level. Reading strategies are divided into three types: 1. Pre- reading strategies 2. While- reading strategies 3. Post- reading strategies Pre-reading strategies. Pre-reading strategies are used before reading the text. One of the pre-reading strategies is skimming. Skimming is look through a text quickly in order to get a general idea, to find a particular point. Skimming is done for general understanding. In this activity teacher gives a topic to each student. According to the topic they should write, speak and answer the following questions: What I know about this topic? Is the text/topic scientific, historical or romance? Who are the main characters of the text? On the other hand students can get the gist by matching titles to text, pictures to paragraphs, captions to text. Pre-viewing is learning a text before reading. Pre-viewing allows readers to get information of what the text is about and how it is going on before reading. In this activity without reading students answer the following questions about “body of the text”: *What is the headline of the text? *How many paragraphs are given in the text? *How many time it take to read? *Are there any sections? *What are the titles of the section? *Are there pictures with captions? Predicting .Predicting is the main activity of pre-reading strategy where students should predict the text. According to the given title, picture, vocabulary, questions, captions, paragraphs and key words students may predict what the text is about. In

order to get the main idea of the text faster and easily students should read the first and last sentences of each paragraph. It helps readers understand the text. Identifying genre.Identifying genre is the simple and useful activity of pre-reading. It isn’t much difficult for adult learners. Students can identify the genre of the text according to its form, and “body” without reading it. Scanning.Scanning is reading the text carefully in order to get the specific information. Specific information can be dates, places, page numbers, names. It would be better readers scan *the introduction of the text *the first and last sentences of each paragraph *the summarizing chapter of the text. Learning key vocabulary .Learning key vocabulary is a pre-reading activity which based on key words. The key words can be matching activities, definitions, pictures, multiple choice activities, etc. These structures help students comprehend text and the meaning of the text easily. Brainstormin. Brainstorming is an effective strategy of reading. This activity helps teacher conduct meaningful and interesting, understandable lesson. On the other hand it helps students make up text or topic freely. At the beginning of the activity teacher writes a word on the blackboard on circle and learners are asked to give the closely words which connected with the written word. For example the word “country” is written by teacher on the blackboard and readers write their own words which connected with country. Then teacher make up a text or topic by using written words and students are asked to write and read the text. At the end of the activity learners answer the following questions: *What do you already know about this topic? *What do you want to know about this topic? While reading activities . There are a number of while reading activities are used by teacher during the lesson in order to introduce a new text for students. These activities are understandable and require more practice and work. One of the main activities is keeping questions in mind.

Keeping questions in mind. Keeping questions in mind are used during the reading a text. It requires more attention and speed from readers. There are given some questions about the text. And students are asked to read questions with attention and answer all questions while reading the text. They should find answers during reading and answers on time. So in order not to confuse and forget the task readers should keep questions in their mind. Underlining. Underlining is considered a while reading activity. During the reading students are asked to highlight the basic points of the text, such as new words, idioms, phrasal verbs, parts of speech, unknown words according to the given task. Readers try to learn these important parts with attention and acquire them. Moreover they have a chance to realize the text. This activity helps learners understand the important point of the text and aim of the reading. Filling in a graphic organizer. While reading a text learners may encounter the tables, graphics which are about the text. Readers’ task is not only to read the text carefully and understand it, but also to fill in tables, T charts, graphics which are given. Graphics are given according to the text and fact. Only specific information should be written on the tables. Monitoring comprehension. Monitoring comprehension is used while reading a text. Monitoring comprehension is a good way of assessing learners. In order to verify students understanding of each paragraph, section or important point of the text some comprehension questions are given while reading the text. And learners are asked to answer these questions without hesitation. So this activity is called as “Monitoring comprehension”. Post reading strategies. Post reading strategies are beneficial for students in order to learn reading and reading tasks as pre-reading and while reading strategies. There are some post-reading activities and they are used after reading the text. The main aim of post reading activity is to check students’ knowledge and understanding about the given text, to know their own opinions and suggestions about the text and assess learners. One type of post reading strategy is critical analysis and evaluating.

Critical analysis and evaluating. This activity is considered one of the important activities of post reading. And it is done at the end of the reading. After finishing to read the text critical analysis an evaluation are given in order to analyze and evaluate critically the author’s opinion. It helps learners think and assess critically and independently. Summarizing and paraphrasing. In summarizing and paraphrasing activity after reading the whole text students are asked to identify the main idea of the text and give their own opinions about the text. On the other hand they can restate the main idea with their own words. Summarizing and paraphrasing help teacher know how the students understand the text and meaning of the text clearly. Each member of group is asked to give his/her own opinion about the text. Reflection and integrated activities. Reflection and integrated activities are used at the end of the reading task. Firstly in this activity students are asked to write a reflective paragraph about the text. If learners understand the meaning of the text and reading tasks they can write and express their ideas without any difficulties. Secondly after reading the text teacher and learners discuss it together whether they agree or disagree to the text. They share their opinions, ideas with one another about the text. Reading to present. In this activity after understanding and knowing the text, getting a lot of useful information about the text fully, students present it to other readers. It is a good way to recommend the book or text to read. Using background knowledge. Using background knowledge is an effective activity where learners use their background knowledge – what they already know to understand new words, concepts, ideas. Background knowledge saves time and gives a big opportunity to comprehend the text easily than other activities. On the other hand background knowledge helps the reader predict, preview easily and quickly. True, False, Not given. This activity is used after reading the whole passage. Learners are asked to find the statements whether they are true or false or not given. Learners tick “true” if the statement agrees with the statement. They tick

“false” if the statement contradicts the information and students tick “not given” if there is no information on this. According to the given answer by students teacher knows how well learners comprehend the text and meaning. There are a number of reading activities which were found and observed by professors. One of them is listen, read and write activity. Listen, Read and Write. This activity is suitable for advanced learners. Teacher needs intelligent group of students who write, read and listen the same speed. And it includes listening, reading and writing together. Teacher gives four stories to students. Each student has different stories. And the text should be short not long. First of all the student read the story and after finishing one student of each pair tells his/her story to his/her right-hand neighbor. Then the neighbor tells his/her story too. Each student writes his/her story which he/she has heard from the neighbor. After writing those students give their written stories to their left-hand neighbor. The other neighbor read the story and tells it to his/her partner. Then that student writes his/her own story and so on. At the end of the activity written stories are compared with original stories. Listen, read and write activity is a good way to improve learners’ listening and writing skills, reading comprehension together at the same time. On the other hand it motivates students to do tasks very well and requires more practice for writing reading and listening. Vocabulary is an ongoing process and the first step to learn language. Vocabulary is the key of language. Without any words we cannot communicate with people and express our ideas, feelings in target language. As it was mentioned above we- learners acquire most of words through reading. Reading is the basic process of learning vocabulary. Reading is one of the significant language skills. By reading people have a lot of opportunities to get a number of information. “Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life” (Martimer J.Adler). Reading is more beneficial than listening and other skills. Why? Because a reader can get more information by reading a text or topic then listening or watching TV. Moreover, if the reader forgets he/she can read again, while a listener cannot. Students are

taught how to read effectively in order to get the specific information. In this case vocabulary can help learners understand the text and the meaning of the text. Researchers found that vocabulary is the key in helping the students to comprehend the text too. A number of researchers found the strong relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension. Vocabulary leads to improved reading comprehension and reading leads to vocabulary growth. They are connected with each other. Nation(2001) suggests that in the case of the reading-vocabulary connection when we know a word well, we access at least nine components of word knowledge: 1. Orthography (spelling) 2. Morphology (word – family relations) 3. Parts of speech 4. Pronunciation 5. Meanings (referential range, variant meanings, homophones) 6. Collocations (what words very commonly go with a word) 7. Meaning associations (topical links, synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms) 8. Specific uses 9. Register (power, politeness, disciplinary domain, formality, slang, dialect form). When we learn a word for the first time we may forget it easily and we cannot able to know everything about a word immediately. After encountering the word multiple time in multiple contexts we can recall the unknown word. Lack of vocabulary readers cannot read and understand the text in target language. Nation pointed that about 4000 word families are needed for reading instructionally with approximately 95 percent of words known in a given text. t means that in order to understand and analyse the text which is written in target language learners are able to know at least 4000 word families. On the other hand scientists found that a minimum of 10, 000 words gives a chance to reader to comprehend an academic text.

Knowing the strong relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension helps teachers conduct and find the useful and easy strategies of vocabulary learning and comprehending the text. other researcher Hirsch(2003) explained that knowing at least 90 percent of the words of a text gives a chance the reader to get the main idea. Roehrig, Guo(2011) and Sedita also explain the relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension. As they mentioned vocabulary is more crucial in reading comprehension and helps learners to identify the general idea of the text. in order to check students’ ability in reading comprehension and vocabulary observers organized an achievement test . The text contains 50 questions, and twenty five questions are the questions to measure students’ reading comprehension and the other twenty five questions are to measure to students’ vocabulary. After calculating the data from achievement test some students included into excellent category, some of them included into good and average category in comprehending a text and vocabulary. But some learners included into poor category. After the result of achievement test it is found that the background knowledge and the ability of students’ vocabulary help students comprehend the text and do tasks without difficulties. Having more and adequate vocabulary makes the student understand the text easily. Moreover reading strategies help learners to comprehend the text too. According to the text we knew that there is a relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension. They fill in one another and learners who have high scores in read also have high scores in vocabulary too. As it was mentioned more experience and background knowledge help learners understand and identify reading materials and vocabulary tasks. By using them learners find unknown words and they can guess the meaning of unknown word. So if teacher gives more vocabulary to students and demands them to learn new words regularly, it works well. And the teacher achieves what he/she want- the good result. On the other hand vocabulary improves students’ knowledge and participant on the lesson. As it was mentioned in above most of language learners find and learn new words incidentally. Incidental vocabulary learning is a process of acquiring new words

through reading topics, texts or passages. And it isn’t planned process. But some learners are unable to understand new words incidentally. Because acquiring new words incidentally through reading in context is not easy process and it requires more vocabulary and practice. If learners encounter unknown words more than five or six times in context they can learn and remember them quickly and easily. The main aim of reading comprehension is to enhance learners’ vocabulary and knowledge. Incidental vocabulary learning is a good way of acquiring new words. Moreover during the incidental learning students are able to do all tasks such as identifying the specific information and comprehending the whole meaning of the text. learning a unknown words incidentally is not learning a word but it also improves students’ fluency and reading comprehension too. While reading the text students have a chance to acquire new words according to the context. I meant about guessing word meanings through context. Especially advanced learners can improve their vocabulary through guessing word and word meanings. Good readers are able to infer words from context without difficulties. Acquiring a new word through context help learners understand the new word and its usage, meaning. One of the best ways of learning vocabulary through reading is paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is a process of rearrange the main idea into reader’s own word. Before paraphrasing the text first of all students are able to comprehend the meaning of the text. Good readers can understand the meaning of the text while reading. Moreover they are able to speak about the text in their own words. There are six steps of improving vocabulary and reading comprehension by using paraphrasing: 1-step: Learners are given the passage. And students just look through the passage. 2-step: Learners read and underline the unknown words for them. 3-step: Students find the definition of the new words, write and read them. 4-step: Learners paraphrase the text by changing the words with synonyms which is appropriate for the passage.

5-step: Students restate the structure of the sentences not changing the meaning. 6-step: After done all steps, finally, students paraphrase the whole text in their own words. This activity improves not only reading comprehension, but it also enhances learners’ speaking skill and vocabulary knowledge. Moreover students can remember the new words for a long time and they can use them in daily life. In above I gave a number of strategies of presenting new vocabulary such as circumlocution strategy, transfer strategy, dialogue, storytelling, riddles, etc. These strategies and activities are connected with reading comprehension too. They affect the quality of the lesson. There are given some beneficial instructions of learning vocabulary in below: (Nation) * Learning key words before reading. * Repeating words multiple times. * Meeting words more in multiple contexts. * Encountering words in structured overviews, reading guides and advance organizers before reading. * Reading ahead, rereading, verbally repeating the word, paraphrasing, substituting synonyms. * Using a dictionary. * Choosing suitable texts or passages to learn. * Increasing interest in words and motivation for word learning. * Using glosses for unknown words. The strong relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension has been studied for a long time by a number of scientists such as Nation, Stahl, Nagy, Beck, Mc Keown & Kucan, Blachowicz & Miller, Graves, Sanaoui, etc. They observed and gave their opinions, ideas about vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. As they pointed vocabulary is important and main aspect in comprehending the text. They cannot inseparable. If learners try to learn new

words through reading systematically, they rich their vocabulary knowledge in short time and can save the unknown words for a long time in their mind. On the other hand more experience makes their tasks easier and interesting. Also it improves learners’ speed. Every language learner should follow the following statement “The more you practice, the better you know”. 2.1 Strategies for improving reading skills Reading is not a natural act, or as Maryanne Wolf explained it, there are no reading genes. Rather, reading is a cultural activity that has undergone profound changes since its inception. In the standard history of reading entitled Orality and literacy pointed out that the earliest basic script dates from only about 6,000 years ago. Furthermore, the first full alphabet did not have its beginning until the Greeks developed their alphabet about 750 B.C. Putting this time frame into an individual perspective, Wolf poetically wrote that “despite the fact that it took our ancestors about 2,000 years to develop an alphabetic code, children are regularly expected to crack this code in about 2,000 days”. Providing insight into the cultural history of reading, Robert Darnton pointed out that up until the third or fourth century A.D., Europeans “had to unroll a book to read it”. Scrolls would eventually evolve into folded pages, which in turn eventually became gathered pages or the codex in which the book as it is recognized today. The popular writer Alberto Manguel has written that early Christians adopted the codex because they found it a convenient format for keeping their spiritual texts hidden from Roman authorities. These early Christians were the forefathers of the men who later read and transcribed their religious texts in monasteries. Interestingly, these early scribes first did their work by reading out loud to themselves. Not until the ninth century did monastic regulations begin requiring silent reading. By the thirteenth century the practice of men reading silently and alone became commonplace. This shift to silent reading was a profound change; one that Darnton suggested “involved a greater mental adjustment than the shift to printed text”. Importance of reading

Reading is a cornerstone for success not just in schools but throughout life. Through reading, we acquire new ideas and knowledge, obtain needed information, relax the minds, and improve our command of language and vocabulary. It also serves as a good companion and provides pleasure, expand our horizons and enrich our lives. We are fortunate as we can easily find libraries and bookshops throughout the country and we should know how to make good use of them. But sadly, this is not the case as many of our young people only visit the libraries and bookstores during examinations or in times of need. Reading has come to hold the most significant place in education as a means of communication in a highly literate society. The book is still very much part of people's lives in our modern society and in spite of the invention of the latest audio-visual materials, the book in its ordinary conventional form is still the most important means of communication ever invented. Reading is important for acquiring knowledge and information. The enrichment in knowledge would, in turn, enable one to present oneself more confidently. From the very young to the old and the sick, there are books to suit every taste. In their research with adult readers, found that reading contributes significantly to job success, career development, and ability to respond to change. The importance of reading has resulted in much research work conducted to understand the nature of the reading habits of individuals. With the growing amount of digital information available and the increasing amount of time that people spend reading electronic media, the digital environment has begun to affect people’s reading behaviour. Studies have shown that ignoring reluctance is identical to sustaining the conditions for another generation of reading problems in the schools as the sons and daughters of non-reading parents complete the vicious cycle as shown in Figure 1 known as Reading Modelling Effects. This reading model presented alerts the importance of modelling effects. This study has found that unless people who read, do continue to read willingly for information and pleasure, we won’t have models who can contribute effectively towards promoting positive reading

behaviour. The lack of positive reading behaviour is one that breeds at both secondary schools as was university levels. If university students who read will continue to read after graduation, their influence as models in their respective homes, workplaces and schools if they are educators, will contribute to the amelioration of the problem of widespread reading reluctance in the nation. In learning English as a second or foreign language, asserts that reading is the most important skill to master. In Uzbekistan, where English is taught as a foreign language, reading in English would undoubtedly help a learner to be proficient in the language as language can be learned through reading. Conceived in this way, comprehension will not follow exactly the same track for each reader . What is in question is not the retrieval of an absolute, fixed or ‘true’ meaning that can be read off and checked for accuracy, or some timeless relation of the text to the world. Rather, we ascribe meanings to texts on the basis of interaction between what we might call textual and contextual material: between kinds of organization or patterning we perceive in a text’s formal structures (so especially its language structures) and various kinds of background, social knowledge, belief and attitude that we bring to the text. Such background material inevitably reflects who we are. Factors such as the place and period in which we are reading, our gender, ethnicity, age and social class will encourage us towards certain interpretations but at the same time obscure or even close off others. This doesn’t, however, make interpretation merely relative or even pointless. Precisely because readers from different historical periods, places and social experiences produce different but overlapping readings of the same words on the page – including for texts that engage with fundamental human concerns – debates about texts can play an important role in social discussion of beliefs and values.

How we read a given text also depends to some extent on our particular interest in reading it. Are we studying that text and trying to respond in a way that fulfills the requirement of a given course? Reading it simply for pleasure? Skimming it for information? Ways of reading on a train or in bed are likely to differ considerably from reading in a seminar room. Such dimensions of reading suggest – as others introduced later in the book will also do – that we bring an implicit (often unacknowledged) agenda to any act of reading. It doesn’t then necessarily follow that one kind of reading is fuller, more advanced or more worthwhile than another. Ideally, different kinds of reading inform each other, and act as useful reference points for and counterbalances to one another. Together, they make up the reading component of your overall literacy, or relationship to your surrounding textual environment. Reading skills are important throughout our lifespan, particularly as we respond to new demands and changes in jobs and reading for pleasure or recreational has been found to improve reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, and grammatical development. When adults in today’s age who can read, choose not to read, they are likely to create a generation of non-readers as perpetuate the problem of reading reluctance. The term reluctant readers to people who can read but do not read and the term reluctance to describe the phenomenon of people who can read but choose not to read. The focus on reading is crucial given the development of communications technology and the changed reality we confront in contemporary societies. For reading to be meaningful, it is essential that young people learn not only to read but they cultivate reading behaviour for lifelong learning. While new forms of reading texts (mass and multimedia) have emerged, it is still not certain if communications technology will be used to maintain their reading for pleasure and lifelong learning. Reading attitude is an integral part of the development and use of lifelong reading skills. Having positive attitudes toward learning is one of the most important psychological concepts in education. A positive attitude determines the success of any instruction, so it is crucial for instructors to engage, maintain, and

rekindle students' positive attitude. Positive reading attitudes affect the students' ultimate academic success by increasing the amount of time that is spent on reading. Whether students read or not is largely determined by their attitudes toward reading. If students do not like to read or think reading is boring, negative attitudes are likely to hold back their reading improvement. Poor readers generally have more negative attitudes than good readers. Relatively recently, reading research has broadened in scope to consider the way in which social contexts influence reading ability. The development of reading skills is now accepted to occur not only in the classroom, but also within social settings, at home and in the wider community, including the public library. International research provides powerful demonstrations of the impact of the actions of young people and family members as they combine languages, illiteracies and cultural practices from a variety of contexts. In many studies grounded in ‘‘real world settings’’, in other words, beyond the school gates, children’s learning is supported and in turn supports the learning of others, in ways that are not necessarily recognized or understood within the school. It is much better to begin with to take books to the people than to expect people to come to libraries to look for books. There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that people do not go to libraries because it is not a culturally familiar thing to do. The second reason is that if people do pluck up courage and venture through library doors they often find that it is such an alien place that they leave as soon as possible and do not come back. Almost all our valuable life-enriching habits are given to us by our parents, our peers or our teachers. If students want to participate actively in the class, they are likely to perform extra work on their own in order to improve their reading skills. When students are intrinsically motivated, they are undertaking an activity for its own sake, for the enjoyment it provides, or the feeling of accomplishment it evokes. Intrinsic motivation has more potential benefits than extrinsic motivation. Students with intrinsic motivation use more logical information gathering and decision- making strategies than students with extrinsic motivation. When intrinsically motivated,

students tend to employ strategies that demand more time and effort, and that enable them to process information more deeply. Students with an intrinsic orientation also tend to prefer academic tasks that are moderately challenging, whereas extrinsically orientated students gravitate toward tasks that are low in degree of difficulty. Extrinsically oriented students are inclined to put forth the minimal amount of time, energy, and effort necessary in order to receive the maximum reward. Students should be provided with sufficient homework and class work in order to help improve reading comprehension in their courses. Critical reading and thinking skills require active reading (White, 2004). Being active readers mean students have to engage with the text, both mentally and physically. Students should do the following: skim ahead, jump back, and highlight the text when they are studying. They should make specific observations about the text. Students should skim and scan homework and class work assignments to get the general idea of its contents. Instructors should provide class-related topics that are exciting and interesting. The best instructors tell stories related to topic; when students are taking a quiz or exam, they will remember the story associated with the lecture to recall the information. Practice exercises are also essential to improve reading comprehension in college courses. Practice exercises in class and homework help students to remember the information for quizzes and final exams. New words appearing in the scripted materials are printed on a flipchart. In this way, students could see and take careful notice during the discussion of each new word as it is used in a textbook illustration, and is identified and printed on a chalkboard. These new words are referred to in the reading activity. When you are reading, make it pleasurable and fine a quiet place. Make your reading time your favourite time of day like have some good tea or coffee. Find a quiet place that you are comfortable and be easy to understand what you read. A quite place will make you peace. If you find yourself stressful while reading the book, don’t continue reading under pressure like that. Reading is for pleasure, so don’t push yourself too hard that you can quit reading forever, or even if you can

read, the outcome won’t be so good either. After approximately 12 years in formal education, majority of students are able to read efficiently after finishing their secondary education. However, even equipped with literacy skills particularly reading skills, the reading habits of students are still at an unsatisfactory level. Society at large, especially parents, need to change this mind-set and be more proactive in guiding and cultivating reading habits among children from a young age. The people that are culturally closest to us and who are therefore most influential are our parents and our peers. Reading begins at home and parents are the key indicators on whether their child is acquiring the habit of learning. Children at a tender age are like sponge feeding into their minds knowledge and information from their parents which act as their role model. Conditioning the child with positive reading habits must be inculcated at this young age to provide a strong pillar and platform for them to create a passion in reading. Teachers in schools are busy with their daily stressful job of educating children and this require the parents to push the extra mile in spending time reading and this will improve the social bondage between them. If our youth spend their free time in reading and cultivate critical thinking, we will have less social problems such as illegal racing, wild sex, and baby-dumping, drug-taking and so on. Another aspect of reading skill is the learning of speed reading which enables one to read and understand much faster and more knowledge in a shortest time. Speed reading is a collection of reading methods which attempt to increase rates of reading without greatly reducing comprehension or retention. The ability to read fast in a comprehensive manner is like any ability, something people can develop over time. Reading motivation refers to a person’s personal goals, values and beliefs on reading topics, processes and outcomes. Motivation can be in the form of intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) factors. When the desire to read is controlled externally, for example, to meet teachers’ or parents’ expectations, readers are only extrinsically motivated because they may not be interested to read but they want to achieve certain outcomes like rewards or good grades. In the mid-1940's, Francis Robinson developed the SQ3R method of self-regulated reading. College students

and professionals need a method to help them become proficient in reading in order to help them learn more effectively. Proficient reading skills give students the potential to be better self-directed learners, and therefore acquire more expertise within their professional fields. There are four items that proficient readers partake of. First, students have a reason for why they are reading and how they will read. Second, students know their skill process when they read. Third, students keep track of their reading comprehension. Finally, students use a large assortment of reading methods for different reading passages. The SQ3R method includes survey, question, read, recite and review. To survey the reading material, students need to quickly overview the text and understand the main points and how this information is structured. Using the survey part of this reading method, students will skim the textbook chapter to see the overall structure, decide which reading method will be best based upon the headings and view the larger image of the chapter to understand the reading. By knowing what the textbook chapters are about, students can provide questions to promote critical thinking skills. Using peer teaching, a small group of college students take tum being the teacher. Peer teaching has also been called cooperative learning. First, the group reads a portion of textbook chapter silently, and then the peer teacher asks a question that may be asked by the actual teacher about what they just read. The group discusses the reading and assists each other with any questions or clarification if needed. The peer teacher makes a guess about what could be happening next in the text. This process can help students to gain better understanding of their reading. The actual teacher of the class starts off the group discussion and offers much help. Through time, the teacher reduces the assistance that is given to the group until the group is guiding the entire discussion on their own. Another approach is peer-assisted instruction. This procedure involves two students taking part in reading and understanding together, bringing about more opportunities for each student to ask questions they have and to answer questions the other student has. They are able to learn together for understanding the reading assignment. Students were paired with another student based upon level of

achievement. Higher or average performing students are paired with a student who achieves lower results based upon a protest performance. This approach allows students to ask questions about the assigned reading together in a group Reading habit should start from young itself. There for parents should play a main role in convincing and ting their children on how important it is for a person to read no matter what type of reading material it is but it must be beneficial. Nowadays it is understood that parents are busy with their work, but they must make sure their children reads daily. Other than that, parents should bring their kids to the national library at least once a week and they have to read together with their kids, so that the kids will be encouraged to read [60]. Parents also can set up a mini library at home with the materials available and suitable for reading. Parents also should advise their adult children to read newspaper on a daily basis and not only reading story book or novels. This is to make sure that they are aware about the current issues. For adults, it will take time to change their habit when they realize reading is very important. Government also must carry out campaign regarding reading habits. Children should be exposed to reading from the womb; however reading must be more to children than a time of fun and enjoyment. When asked why reading is important they should have the understanding that reading is the key to unlocking their future success. It is observed that children and teenagers who love reading have comparatively higher IQs. They are more creative and do better in school and college. It is recommended that parents to inculcate the importance of reading to their children in the early years. Reading is said to significantly help in developing vocabulary, and reading aloud helps to build a strong emotional bond between parents and children. The children who start reading from an early age are observed to have good language skills, and they grasp the variances in phonics much better. One of the best ways for children to understand why reading is important is for them to see those around them reading. Many adults have plenty of opportunities to ensure that children have a respect for the written word. Every time an adult picks up a newspaper, magazine, or reads a book in front of a child

they are showing children that reading is important. In addition, it is also important that children understand that reading comprehension, vocabulary and the ability to discern critically the information being read are important elements for successful reading. Adults should never hesitate to explain to children the importance of reading, building vocabulary skills, and increasing reading comprehension. As Uzbekistan move towards Vision 2020, which incorporates nine strategic objectives and the sixth is the challenge to establish a scientific and progressive society, a society that is innovative and forward looking, one that is not only a consumer of technology but also contributor to the scientific and technological civilization of the future. And being poor readers, it is not going to be easy for us to attain this goal. The introduction of the digital age in terms of electronic learning better known as English Learning is another reason why reading must be emphasized as anyone can learn from anywhere as long as they have a computer and internet access. Language instructors are often frustrated by the fact that students do not automatically transfer the strategies they use when reading in their native language to reading in a language they are learning. Instead, they seem to think reading means starting at the beginning and going word by word, stopping to look up every unknown vocabulary item, until they reach the end. When they do this, students are relying exclusively on their linguistic knowledge, a bottom-up strategy. One of the most important functions of the language instructor, then, is to help students move past this idea and use top-down strategies as they do in their native language. Effective language instructors show students how they can adjust their reading behavior to deal with a variety of situations, types of input, and reading purposes. They help students develop a set of reading strategies and match appropriate strategies to each reading situation. Strategies that can help students read more quickly and effectively include

 Previewing: reviewing titles, section headings, and photo captions to get a sense of the structure and content of a reading selection  Predicting: using knowledge of the subject matter to make predictions about content and vocabulary and check comprehension; using knowledge of the text type and purpose to make predictions about discourse structure; using knowledge about the author to make predictions about writing style, vocabulary, and content  Skimming and scanning: using a quick survey of the text to get the main idea, identify text structure, confirm or question predictions  Guessing from context: using prior knowledge of the subject and the ideas in the text as clues to the meanings of unknown words, instead of stopping to look them up  Paraphrasing: stopping at the end of a section to check comprehension by restating the information and ideas in the text Instructors can help students learn when and how to use reading strategies in several ways.  By modeling the strategies aloud, talking through the processes of previewing, predicting, skimming and scanning, and paraphrasing. This shows students how the strategies work and how much they can know about a text before they begin to read word by word.  By allowing time in class for group and individual previewing and predicting activities as preparation for in-class or out-of-class reading. Allocating class time to these activities indicates their importance and value.  By using cloze (fill in the blank) exercises to review vocabulary items. This helps students learn to guess meaning from context.  By encouraging students to talk about what strategies they think will help them approach a reading assignment, and then talking after reading about what strategies they actually used. This helps students develop flexibility in their choice of strategies.

When language learners use reading strategies, they find that they can control the reading experience, and they gain confidence in their ability to read the language. Reading to Learn Reading is an essential part of language instruction at every level because it supports learning in multiple ways.  Reading to learn the language: Reading material is language input. By giving students a variety of materials to read, instructors provide multiple opportunities for students to absorb vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and discourse structure as they occur in authentic contexts. Students thus gain a more complete picture of the ways in which the elements of the language work together to convey meaning.  Reading for content information: Students' purpose for reading in their native language is often to obtain information about a subject they are studying, and this purpose can be useful in the language learning classroom as well. Reading for content information in the language classroom gives students both authentic reading material and an authentic purpose for reading.  Reading for cultural knowledge and awareness: Reading everyday materials that are designed for native speakers can give students insight into the lifestyles and worldviews of the people whose language they are studying. When students have access to newspapers, magazines, and Web sites, they are exposed to culture in all its variety, and monolithic cultural stereotypes begin to break down. When reading to learn, students need to follow four basic steps: 1. Figure out the purpose for reading. Activate background knowledge of the topic in order to predict or anticipate content and identify appropriate reading strategies.

2. Attend to the parts of the text that are relevant to the identified purpose and ignore the rest. This selectivity enables students to focus on specific items in the input and reduces the amount of information they have to hold in short- term memory. 3. Select strategies that are appropriate to the reading task and use them flexibly and interactively. Students' comprehension improves and their confidence increases when they use top-down and bottom-up skills simultaneously to construct meaning. 4. Check comprehension while reading and when the reading task is completed. Monitoring comprehension helps students detect inconsistencies and comprehension failures, helping them learn to use alternate strategies. Integrating Reading Strategies. Instruction in reading strategies is not an add-on, but rather an integral part of the use of reading activities in the language classroom. Instructors can help their students become effective readers by teaching them how to use strategies before, during, and after reading. Before reading: Plan for the reading task  Set a purpose or decide in advance what to read for  Decide if more linguistic or background knowledge is needed  Determine whether to enter the text from the top down (attend to the overall meaning) or from the bottom up (focus on the words and phrases) During and after reading: Monitor comprehension  Verify predictions and check for inaccurate guesses  Decide what is and is not important to understand  Reread to check comprehension  Ask for help After reading: Evaluate comprehension and strategy use

 Evaluate comprehension in a particular task or area  Evaluate overall progress in reading and in particular types of reading tasks  Decide if the strategies used were appropriate for the purpose and for the task  Modify strategies if necessary Reading Aloud in the Classroom Students do not learn to read by reading aloud. A person who reads aloud and comprehends the meaning of the text is coordinating word recognition with comprehension and speaking and pronunciation ability in highly complex ways. Students whose language skills are limited are not able to process at this level, and end up having to drop one or more of the elements. Usually the dropped element is comprehension, and reading aloud becomes word calling: simply pronouncing a series of words without regard for the meaning they carry individually and together. Word calling is not productive for the student who is doing it, and it is boring for other students to listen to.  There are two ways to use reading aloud productively in the language classroom. Read aloud to your students as they follow along silently. You have the ability to use inflection and tone to help them hear what the text is saying. Following along as you read will help students move from word-by- word reading to reading in phrases and thought units, as they do in their first language.  Use the "read and look up" technique. With this technique, a student reads a phrase or sentence silently as many times as necessary, then looks up (away from the text) and tells you what the phrase or sentence says. This encourages students to read for ideas, rather than for word recognition.

2.3 Using Textbook Reading Activities Many language textbooks emphasize product (answers to comprehension questions) over process (using reading skills and strategies to understand the text), providing little or no contextual information about the reading selections or their authors, and few if any pre-reading activities. Newer textbooks may provide pre- reading activities and reading strategy guidance, but their one-size-fits-all approach may or may not be appropriate for your students. You can use the guidelines for developing reading activities given here as starting points for evaluating and adapting textbook reading activities. Use existing, or add your own, pre-reading activities and reading strategy practice as appropriate for your students. Don't make students do exercises simply because they are in the book; this destroys motivation. Another problem with textbook reading selections is that they have been adapted to a predetermined reading level through adjustment of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence length. This makes them more immediately approachable, but it also means that they are less authentic and do not encourage students to apply the reading strategies they will need to use outside of class. When this is the case, use the textbook reading selection as a starting point to introduce a writer or topic, and then give students choices of more challenging authentic texts to read as a followup. Assessing Reading Proficiency Reading ability is very difficult to assess accurately. In the communicative competence model, a student's reading level is the level at which that student is able to use reading to accomplish communication goals. This means that assessment of reading ability needs to be correlated with purposes for reading. Reading Aloud. A student's performance when reading aloud is not a reliable indicator of that student's reading ability. A student who is perfectly capable of understanding a given text when reading it silently may stumble when asked to

combine comprehension with word recognition and speaking ability in the way that reading aloud requires. In addition, reading aloud is a task that students will rarely, if ever, need to do outside of the classroom. As a method of assessment, therefore, it is not authentic: It does not test a student's ability to use reading to accomplish a purpose or goal. However, reading aloud can help a teacher assess whether a student is "seeing" word endings and other grammatical features when reading. To use reading aloud for this purpose, adopt the "read and look up" approach: Ask the student to read a sentence silently one or more times, until comfortable with the content, then look up and tell you what it says. This procedure allows the student to process the text, and lets you see the results of that processing and know what elements, if any, the student is missing. Comprehension Questions. Instructors often use comprehension questions to test whether students have understood what they have read. In order to test comprehension appropriately, these questions need to be coordinated with the purpose for reading. If the purpose is to find specific information, comprehension questions should focus on that information. If the purpose is to understand an opinion and the arguments that support it, comprehension questions should ask about those points. In everyday reading situations, readers have a purpose for reading before they start. That is, they know what comprehension questions they are going to need to answer before they begin reading. To make reading assessment in the language classroom more like reading outside of the classroom, therefore, allow students to review the comprehension questions before they begin to read the test passage. Finally, when the purpose for reading is enjoyment, comprehension questions are beside the point. As a more authentic form of assessment, have students talk or write about why they found the text enjoyable and interesting (or not).

Authentic Assessment. In order to provide authentic assessment of students' reading proficiency, a post-listening activity must reflect the real-life uses to which students might put information they have gained through reading.  It must have a purpose other than assessment  It must require students to demonstrate their level of reading comprehension by completing some task To develop authentic assessment activities, consider the type of response that reading a particular selection would elicit in a non-classroom situation. For example, after reading a weather report, one might decide what to wear the next day; after reading a set of instructions, one might repeat them to someone else; after reading a short story, one might discuss the story line with friends. Use this response type as a base for selecting appropriate post-reading tasks. You can then develop a checklist or rubric that will allow you to evaluate each student's comprehension of specific parts of the text. In addition to the main purpose for reading, an activity can also have one or more instructional purposes, such as practicing or reviewing specific grammatical constructions, introducing new vocabulary, or familiarizing students with the typical structure of a certain type of text. Check the level of difficulty of the text. The factors listed below can help you judge the relative ease or difficulty of a reading text for a particular purpose and a particular group of students.  How is the information organized? Does the story line, narrative, or instruction conform to familiar expectations? Texts in which the events are presented in natural chronological order, which have an informative title, and which present the information following an obvious organization (main ideas first, details and examples second) are easier to follow.

 How familiar are the students with the topic? Remember that misapplication of background knowledge due to cultural differences can create major comprehension difficulties.  Does the text contain redundancy? At the lower levels of proficiency, listeners may find short, simple messages easier to process, but students with higher proficiency benefit from the natural redundancy of authentic language.  Does the text offer visual support to aid in reading comprehension? Visual aids such as photographs, maps, and diagrams help students preview the content of the text, guess the meanings of unknown words, and check comprehension while reading. Remember that the level of difficulty of a text is not the same as the level of difficulty of a reading task. Students who lack the vocabulary to identify all of the items on a menu can still determine whether the restaurant serves steak and whether they can afford to order one. Use pre-reading activities to prepare students for reading The activities you use during pre-reading may serve as preparation in several ways. During pre-reading you may:  Assess students' background knowledge of the topic and linguistic content of the text  Give students the background knowledge necessary for comprehension of the text, or activate the existing knowledge that the students possess  Clarify any cultural information which may be necessary to comprehend the passage  Make students aware of the type of text they will be reading and the purpose(s) for reading  Provide opportunities for group or collaborative work and for class discussion activities

Sample pre-reading activities:  Using the title, subtitles, and divisions within the text to predict content and organization or sequence of information  Looking at pictures, maps, diagrams, or graphs and their captions  Talking about the author's background, writing style, and usual topics  Skimming to find the theme or main idea and eliciting related prior knowledge  Reviewing vocabulary or grammatical structures  Reading over the comprehension questions to focus attention on finding that information while reading  Constructing semantic webs (a graphic arrangement of concepts or words showing how they are related)  Doing guided practice with guessing meaning from context or checking comprehension while reading Pre-reading activities are most important at lower levels of language proficiency and at earlier stages of reading instruction. As students become more proficient at using reading strategies, you will be able to reduce the amount of guided pre- reading and allow students to do these activities themselves. Match while-reading activities to the purpose for reading In while-reading activities, students check their comprehension as they read. The purpose for reading determines the appropriate type and level of comprehension.  When reading for specific information, students need to ask themselves, have I obtained the information I was looking for?  When reading for pleasure, students need to ask themselves, Do I understand the story line/sequence of ideas well enough to enjoy reading this?  When reading for thorough understanding (intensive reading), students need to ask themselves, Do I understand each main idea and how the author supports it?

Does what I'm reading agree with my predictions, and, if not, how does it differ? To check comprehension in this situation, students may  Stop at the end of each section to review and check their predictions, restate the main idea and summarize the section  Use the comprehension questions as guides to the text, stopping to answer them as they read.  Using Authentic Materials and Approaches  For students to develop communicative competence in reading, classroom and homework reading activities must resemble (or be) real-life reading tasks that involve meaningful communication. They must therefore be authentic in three ways.  1. The reading material must be authentic: It must be the kind of material that students will need and want to be able to read when traveling, studying abroad, or using the language in other contexts outside the classroom.  When selecting texts for student assignments, remember that the difficulty of a reading text is less a function of the language, and more a function of the conceptual difficulty and the task(s) that students are expected to complete. Simplifying a text by changing the language often removes natural redundancy and makes the organization somewhat difficult for students to predict. This actually makes a text more difficult to read than if the original were used.  Rather than simplifying a text by changing its language, make it more approachable by eliciting students' existing knowledge in pre-reading discussion, reviewing new vocabulary before reading, and asking students to perform tasks that are within their competence, such as skimming to get the main idea or scanning for specific information, before they begin intensive reading.  2. The reading purpose must be authentic: Students must be reading for reasons that make sense and have relevance to them. "Because the teacher assigned it" is not an authentic reason for reading a text.

 To identify relevant reading purposes, ask students how they plan to use the language they are learning and what topics they are interested in reading and learning about. Give them opportunities to choose their reading assignments, and encourage them to use the library, the Internet, and foreign language newsstands and bookstores to find other things they would like to read.  3. The reading approach must be authentic: Students should read the text in a way that matches the reading purpose, the type of text, and the way people normally read. This means that reading aloud will take place only in situations where it would take place outside the classroom, such as reading for pleasure. The majority of students' reading should be done silently.

Oral forms of language communication are listening comprehension and conversation, which are opposite to academic reading and writing. Methodologists did not pay much attention to listening and abilities to start conversational intercourse. On the contrary, others consider oral forms of communication the only one communicative and focus only on the goal of stimulating conversation and listening comprehension. The truth lies somewhere in the middle between "academic" written language and "illiterate" oral language. The teacher must

define the importance of every sort of communication. If spoken language is very stimulating, it can be base for complex and deep language learning. If students are interested in written language which they can show to parents, the teacher can start from writing which will be the base for the same complex and deep language learning. How does perceptive language mechanism work? At first, The student perceive sounds in their verbal or idiomatic complexity, connects definite sound with definite meaning. Word used in one meaning and for one time is fixed in the primary memory. Primary perception is fixed logically with the help of associations with language and non language structures, and after such associative fixation it is consolidated in the deep memory. At the last stage, it is to appear free converting of grammatical and logical forms at every .complex situation with endless variety of communicative solutions. Perception of spontaneous speech and literally text gives different results and has different communicative purposes. Nevertheless, the teacher must teach to react immediately in both the cases. The teacher must take into account that listener cannot control speed of information but he adheres to it and makes efforts in order to understand the main idea. Exercises for developing listening comprehension can be the following: 1. Listen and fill in. 2. Listen and continue. Listening of some text can be broken off at the most interesting point. Then students must continue in oral or written form. 3. Listen and check. These exercises reacquire special attention to the details and logic. 4. Listen and find. Students are given maps. In course of listening they must mark the places where

the action takes place, or where murder happened, etc. 5. A dynasty. Students are given a scheme of a family tree with empty places for grandparents, mother, father, sister, etc. One student is standing in front of the class and speaking about his family. Other students listen and fill in the family tree. 6. Listen and find differences. Students must find differences between the texts they will hear. 7. Listen and make a summary. The text is read twice. At first time, students only listen while the second time, they make a summary or a plan. C. Developing speaking skills. Natural conversation forces adjustment of a listener to a produce, but talk and perception are mutually connected. Conversational acoustical contact must be a stimulus for a student's and a teacher's work. In the communicative class, it is necessary to support students' motivation showing their failures, success and progress. For that, the teacher can repeat some exercises, which guarantee success in advance, and then to proceed to more complicated exercises. The teacher must take into account the freedom in the frame of communicative abilities known to the students. A conversation should teach the students how to use colloquial language at the most normative, optimum level. Students active participating at class conversations is essential if the class is the only place to communicate. Relevant and actual material is used in real life situations which are not fixed but can vary to different directions. Imitation starts from listening. As a rule, students have a lot of listening but they do not speak. The teacher must provoke them with a help of a situation, game or discussion. Primary stages of colloquial language take a course in

imitating, retelling the plot. Very often conversation goes smoothly when students have significant vocabulary, logical and grammar structures, and trust that they will be understood. But conversation must start at the very beginning of the learning process and expand according to the lexico-grammatical abilities. If the student is afraid of talking there will be any communication. He must join students of similar abilities and create positive conditions to developing conversation. Conversational skills must be developed step by step. A teacher must prepare students for conversations. At first, situation can be discussed in Lithuanian. Making contact with problem is stimulus and that will determine student's position. Now discussion can take place in groups in English. Structuralists claim that constant practice conversational exercises solve all problems. It does a lot but not all. Amount of conversational hours not always develop communicative abilities. Communicative approach is not interested in producing forms and sentences in their sterile correctness. Communicative method does not reject studies of grammar and sentence structure. Subordinate clauses, pronouns, comparative forms, etc. are studied, but communicative method supposes finding situations of a free contact in the course of studying the forms where rules are used practically. Structuralistic dialogues and other exercises are abstract and directed towards strengthening the material. That leads towards students' disability to react to an immediate change of the situation. In other words, the strategic level colloquial language of structuralists is a primitive from the point of view of the communicative direction, but not from the language knowledge. In a structural lesson, students must correctly react to grammatical forms. At these lessons, as admitted by R. Scott (????), focus is shifted from the correct usage of forms to the active selection of instantly reacquired expressions of a communicative character. Such students will care about correct usage for communicative purposes.

Communicative method determines purposes of oral conversation spontaneously, without preliminary preparation. A student has to define purposes of conversation at the very beginning or even in the course of it. Defining of conversational purposes is dictated by need to transmit some information or emotional state. The grammatical aspect has a secondary role if it does not confuse understanding and conveying the purpose of the conversation. Grammatical and phonetic correctness is developed not before the speech but in its course. Structural principle determines strict grammatical laws by which topics are defined. These schemes are applied only id defined conditions. Structural idea persuades strict rules of communication and look after every mistake. In structural class, student first thinks how to say, and only than what to say. In a communicative class the main idea of pedagogical strategy is playing a definite role, and then producing a speech is defined by situation. This means that forms are used in their grammatical correctness but this correctness is not the main task. If grammatical forms prevail in the class the student is willing to say something but he only emphasizes definite grammatical form which is required by the teacher. We defined some moments of studying conversation, they can be the following: 1. Exercises for improving phonologic system, intonation, stress. 2. Answer to questions about what was watched on TV or heard or read. 3. Description pictures. 4. Summarizing the paragraph or a novel. 5. Narrating some event. 6. Discussion. 7. Dialogues.

D. E. Developing writing skills In developing writing skills, as well as in listening, reading and speaking skills, first of all it is necessary to pay attention to communicative purpose and then to the communicative technique. Structuralists and audiolinguists under the influence of the American immigration took into account the needs of immigrants and emphasised oral forms of communication and reading, but left writing at the last stage of learning. Today, writing is necessary no matter whether we use a pen or a computer. At the beginning, Teachers teach only oral language forms. But elementary students are willing to write and show their works to parents. Writing is such a visual category which motivates the learning process, creates the feeling of progress. On the other hand, there is a category of students who does not like writing because it takes a lot of time, requires attention. Teacher must take all into account and look at writing very carefully and define the place of writing in teaching process. The main points in defining place of writing are: 1. Not all the students catch the language in oral forms and they require strengthening of what is heard, seen and read. Writing helps such students. 2. Writing is a kind of proof of the learning process although not always reflects the real progress. 3. Writing develops a special type of logical thinking which focuses thoughts on the main ideas. Descriptive exercises can be based on a series of pictures. The teacher can choose any grammatical form for practise. The teacher can give sheets of paper with

sentences and give a task to compose a story and write it. Exercises for developing writing can be varied not only in difficulties of using "clever" words, but in complexity making up of sentences. Every written complex must not be simply gymnastic grammar exercise but informative and emotional structure where grammar is a natural way of expressing ideas. The teacher can give a task to write a story according pictures which are not connected thematically. That gives liberty of expression, interest and purpose in the course of work. Every story has some structures, so exercises can be built according to a principle of developing: -at first................. -then............. -after.................. -inaddition........ - and finally................................. Description of objects, portraits, etc. does not require developing events in time. It focuses on visual state. Description gives us state of a static quality. Description is important when the teacher wants to teach adjectives. Description of places is similar to description of things and persons. Sources for description can be maps, cards booklets. Description can be official or personal. Description of places can be conveyed by an invented person, at a various seasons or a day-time. A significant role in developing writing skills can be taken by questions and answers. Descriptive in details, answers will be very useful for this purpose. It can help to determine students' ability to communicate in a written form and also a correctness of such forms. Starting from a simple copying and finishing by compositions, teachers always have to stimulate writing by interesting tasks, texts, etc. Conclusion

In this paper we have looked at some of the issues surrounding development, exploration, and use of vocabulary and reading strategies, the strong relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension. As it was mentioned in my work the aim of learning language is to communicate with people who speak in target language. Communicating and speaking in the second language requires adequate vocabulary and experience. As researchers suggest vocabulary is the first main step for communicating well. I tried to explain the role of vocabulary in our life, the significant feature and use of vocabulary, how to present a new word for learners, the aim and types of reading strategies, the strong relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension clearly in my diploma work. I knew that teaching and learning vocabulary and reading is not easy process, especially teaching a new word to young learners. It requires ability, knowledge, practice, various useful materials which make the easier lesson, games, illustrations, more attention, patient, a good lesson plan from teacher. Moreover it requires more experience and practice, time, routine systematically from learners. Nation gives teachers some suggestions for planning vocabulary instruction: 1. Provide vocabulary exposure in multiple contexts. Teach different word in different ways. 2. Teach words while working with the reading texts that they come from. Teach at the point of contact, use discussion around texts to teach vocabulary. 3. Read aloud to students and draw their attention to key words while reading. 4. Develop procedures for selecting word to teach. 5. Use visual supports.

6. Focus on word relationships (parts of speech variations, synonyms, antonyms, word families). 7. Work with dictionary definitions and rewrite more accessible definitions. 8. Develop various activities and useful games in order to motivate learners and to interest them. 9. Create a vocabulary-rich environment. 10. Develop student motivation for word collecting and provide a supportive learning environment. There are a lot of useful strategies and activities which contain vocabulary and reading comprehension given in my diploma paper. Their usage and beneficial sides are explained. One of the effective strategies is using visual aids in the class in front of learners, such as realia, flashcards, pictures, video materials, illustrations, movies, cartoons, coloured storytelling Big Books in order to teach students and make an interesting and meaningful lesson. And if the lesson is organized by using these activities and strategies, learners never lose their interest to the lesson. They have a strong desire to learn language quickly. Building vocabulary and reading strategies are the significant point of language learning. They cannot be taught separately. Vocabulary helps learners comprehend the text and analyze the meaning of the text, on the other hand reading helps learners acquire more words incidentally. Learning language by connecting both of them works well and gives the best result. Moreover these two significant processes improve the quality of the lesson and give a big chance to learn language quickly and with enjoy. As it was mentioned, nowadays a number of opportunities are given to us in order to learn foreign languages and to communicate freely. It would be better if every student use his/her chance on time. All given opportunities in education

system is the attention of our President to youth. As our President Islam Karimov’s state “our children must be stronger, wiser, more educated an certainly happier than us”.
