Introduction Considering the wealth of research on second and foreign language vocabulary learning, it is well established and documented that vocabulary knowledge is dynamic and incremental in nature. While some aspects of vocabulary knowledge might be mastered in a short period of time, others need a long time to be established, and longitudinal research could provide insights into precisely how language learners approach vocabulary learning, both within and beyond the classroom. Actuality of the work. The present article reviews the recent literature on the development of vocabulary knowledge, drawing on the three major types of vocabulary knowledge: breadth (how many words of the target language learners know), depth (what the learners know about the target words) and degree of mastery of receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge. The findings reported in these studies revealed that the process of acquiring vocabulary knowledge is not only complicated but that multiple knowledge dimensions are gradually learned and sooner than others. Aim of the work. The literature has identified that vocabulary learning is incremental in nature, as the mastery of a word is gradual and the learner needs to be exposed to it many times. Achieving mastery of second language vocabulary requires the learner to undergo a complicated process of a comprehensive understanding of different aspects of vocabulary knowledge such as form, meaning and use However, complete mastery of the different facets of vocabulary knowledge cannot be achieved through a limited number of contexts and exposures. This is because “vocabulary learning is not an all-or-nothing piece of learning but is rather a gradual process of one meeting with a word adding to or strengthening the small amount of knowledge gained from previous meetings”. According to Henriksen , the incremental nature of acquiring vocabulary knowledge can be described in three components: breadth of vocabulary knowledge (partial/precise knowledge of known words in the target language),

depth of vocabulary knowledge (how well are words known in regard to meaning and use), and use of receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge. Subject of the work. This work provides a thorough discussion of the incremental nature of vocabulary knowledge, organized in terms of these three dimensions, and drawing on relevant research in L2 and FL contexts. Task of the work . This work comprises reviews and discussions of relevant studies concerning the incremental nature of vocabulary acquisition. Learners’ size of their SL/FL vocabulary gradually develops in a number of ways, with multiple exposures to target words enhancing the process. We can infer that vocabulary learning is not limited to the meaning facet of word knowledge and that other facets of lexical knowledge are part of the learning process. This implies that the description of vocabulary knowledge based on the meaning aspect is not accurate and does not do justice to the complexity of word knowledge. We have seen that the mastery of word knowledge is best seen as being on a continuum, both overall as well as in respect of single word knowledge.

Chapter I English Proficiency and Vocabulary Learning We know that ELLs move along a continuum of English proficiency, with overlapping stages of language acquisition (Ellis, 1982). This means that teach ers can use instructional strategies that scaffold students’ incomplete knowledge of the language system to a greater or lesser extent depending on their degree of English proficiency. ELLs face various types of linguistic demands when learning second- language words. At the most emergent stages of English proficiency, the task of orally seg menting words in a sentence poses challenges, as this task is tied to knowledge about phonological, syntactic, and lexical features in the language. The silences and pauses we think we hear between words in a language are not actually there in reality. In natural language, the speech signal is a continuous stream of sound. There are no pauses. As proficient English speakers, we “hear” pauses because we apply our knowledge of phonology, grammar, and words to appropriately seg ment the utterance. You have probably experienced this phenomenon when listen ing to someone speaking in a language you do not speak and been left with the impression that words in that language are very, very long! To acquire word meanings incidentally from mere exposure to a language, learners need to be able to perceive individual words. The ability to do this de - velops in close relation to phonological and grammatical knowledge. Also, to ac - quire word meanings from context, as often occurs in first-language acquisition, learners need to be able to exploit the grammatical and semantic cues surround ing the unfamiliar word. A learner needs to know the meaning of the words that surround the unfamiliar word as well as how the words relate to one another. This can only happen in conjunction with ELLs’ development of English profi ciency. The development of English proficiency takes time, but can be expedited with direct and systematic second-language vocabulary instruction. Hence, we will not spend much effort reviewing research on learners’ incidental acquisi tion of second- language vocabulary aside from acknowledging that it happens when learners have

access to the second language (thankfully!) and that we can help move this natural process along by providing students with access to rich and varied communicative experiences that involve native speakers of the lan guage students are acquiring (August & Shanahan, 2006a). Instead, we will focus primarily on what we know about promoting second-language word learning through classroom instruction that is deliberate and systematic. The Role of First-Language Proficiency in English Vocabulary Learning We know that ELLs move along a continuum of English proficiency, with overlapping stages of language acquisition. This means that teach ers can use instructional strategies that scaffold students’ incomplete knowledge of the language system to a greater or lesser extent depending on their degree of English proficiency. 1.1 The Role of Instructional Context The literature on the amount of vocabulary instruction in classrooms consists of a handful of studies. In one study of vocabulary instruction in 4th- through 8th- grade classrooms in Canada, Scott, Jamieson-Noel, and Asselin found that about 12% of the time in language arts classrooms was devoted to vocabulary instruction, but only 1.4% of the time was spent on vocabulary instruction in other academic subjects. They also found that most instruction involved mentioning meanings and assigning vocabulary to be learned, rather than providing more ef - fective vocabulary instruction based on recent research in the area. Foorman, Goldenberg, Carlson, Saunders, and Pollard-Durodola exam ined the biliteracy and bilingual development of approximately 850 mostly His panic children in kindergarten through 2nd grade who were enrolled in English immersion, dual-language, or transitional bilingual programs in two urban sites and one border site in Texas and in one urban site in California. As part of the study, the authors examined the amount of time teachers spent in various activities during the reading/language arts and language development blocks. Findings indicated that there were big differences between the states. Irrespective of language model, teachers in California allocated much more time to oral language development in each grade (ranging from 30% to 87%) than teachers in Texas (ranging from 7% to 27%), where teachers focused more on word work and working with text. Where oral language instruction did take place, it consisted of oral language/discussion, English language strategies, Spanish language, and vocabulary. A study by Mora- Harding (2009) of the instructional practices used by 36 teachers in nine South Flor ida public elementary schools serving high numbers of Spanish-speaking students indicated that teachers spent only 6% of the time devoted to the English Language Arts block on instructional strategies involving vocabulary. Considering studies of the vocabulary instruction observed in actual class - rooms, it appears that there remains a great deal of room for improvement, both in terms of time spent on instruction and in methods. The sorts of powerful vo -

cabulary instruction documented in the research described in the next section of the chapter needs to become more common, vocabulary instruction needs to be come more frequent in academic areas such as science and social studies, and something needs to be done to help students with relatively small vocabularies catch up with their classmates. Given the focus on vocabulary acquisition in the Common Core State Standards, we are hopeful that these changes will begin to take place in the near future. 1.2 Providing Rich and Varied Language Experiences Language is primarily acquired incidentally, through listening, talking, and reading. Thus, to the extent possible, teachers need to immerse students in lan - guage-rich environments that provide them with many opportunities to acquire Learning Words in a Second Language. Children can be exposed to rich language through having text read aloud to them, their own reading of texts, and media such as television. Shared Book Reading. As noted in the Introduction, one method that has been used frequently and successfully to develop vocabulary in children is shared book reading in which adults read aloud to children, periodically stopping to highlight and discuss individual words as well as other aspects of what they are reading. Research with native English speakers indicates that this method has an impact on oral language outcomes, including vocabulary, grammar, and listening com prehension. The same ap pears to be the case for ELLs. In a study with young ELLs, Rob erts and Neal compared small-group comprehension-oriented instruction, which consisted of shared book reading, vocabulary instruction, and comprehen sion activities, with emergent literacy instruction, which consisted of naming and writing letters and recognizing and generating rhymes. Findings indicated that children in the comprehension-oriented instruction outperformed children in the emergent literacy instruction in vocabulary and print concepts, while emergent literacy instruction resulted in better letter-naming and writing.

Additionally, Eng lish oral proficiency was more correlated with the comprehension-related skills than with the decoding-related skills. There is evidence that shared book reading can be an effective component for programs for older learners as well. In a study conducted by Carlo et al. (2004), a 15-week intervention was designed to build breadth and depth of vocabulary knowl edge and reading comprehension in 254 bilingual and native English- speaking children from nine 5th-grade classrooms in four schools in California, Virginia, and Massachusetts. The intervention used immigration as a theme. Each weekly lesson began with shared reading of one of a variety of text genres, including newspaper articles, diaries, first-hand documentation of the immigrant experience, historical accounts, and fiction. In accordance with research indicating that words are best learned from rich semantic contexts, target words were selected from the brief, en gaging reading passages. Twelve words that students at this level were likely to encounter repeatedly across texts in different domains were introduced each week. Although there were relatively few words introduced each week, activities helped children make semantic links to other words and concepts and thus to attain a deep er and richer understanding of each word’s meaning, as well as to learn other words and concepts related to the target words. The lessons also taught students to infer meanings from context and to use roots, affixes, cognates, morphological relation ships, and comprehension monitoring. All the strategy instruction used the reading passages as a springboard. Findings indicated that the ELLs did better in generat ing sentences that conveyed different meanings of multi-meaning words, in com pleting cloze passages, on tests of knowledge of word meanings, and on measures of word association and morphological knowledge. On a cloze test used to evalu ate comprehension, students showed significant improvement, but the impact on comprehension was much lower than on vocabulary. These results indicate that this multifaceted training led to improved knowledge of the words studied.

In Chapter 3, we discuss several shared book readings in some detail. We want to note that this is an extremely important type of vocabulary instruction for chil 20 Teaching Vocabulary to English Language Learners who enter school with relatively small vocabularies and that a number of studies have shown that shared book reading can successfully teach word mean ings. However, these results must be taken as encouraging rather than definitive. All of the studies have been relatively short, and few of them have taught anything like the number of words that less advantaged students need to learn in order to catch up to their more advantaged peers. Instruction that successfully bridges this gap will need to extend over several years and help students acquire many more words than have been acquired in studies thus far. Independent Reading. One great advantage of independent reading is that it has the potential to expose learners to massive amounts of vocabulary in a variety of registers that may not be available through spoken language. This clearly affords rich learning opportunities. There is ample evidence to show that incidental learning of vocabulary through reading does occur for both native English- speaking students and ELLs. For example, Nagy, Anderson, and Herman had English proficient stu dents read four natural passages and found that the probability of students learn ing a word well enough to answer a multiple-choice question was .05. They went on to note that even though the probability of learning a word from context is small, given the volume of texts students can potentially read, they could learn a very large number of words from context. Based on their findings, they estimated that the average middle-grade child learns between 800 and 1,200 words from con text annually. As a cautionary note, the authors also pointed out that their study revealed “no learning from context for words at the highest level of conceptual difficulty.” Based on a meta-analysis of 20 studies that examined how native English- speaking students learn from context when not directly prompted to do so, Swan -

born and de Glopper concluded that students can and do learn words incidentally, and that the probability of learning a word from one exposure in a naturally occurring context is .15. They also showed that students at higher grade levels and students with higher reading ability are better able to use context, and that texts containing fewer unknown words better facilitate learning from context. Research conducted with ELLs indicates that silent sustained reading in which students select and regularly read books of their choice for a period of time each day leads to improvements in comprehension and oral language development. With regard to ELLs, an important question is what students learn about vo - cabulary through reading. Schmitt argues that “incidental vocabulary learning from reading is more likely to push words to a partial rather than a full level of mastery, and that any recall learning is more prone to forgetting than rec ognition learning.” Additionally, incidental acquisition appears to include only content words— function words are generally not attended to. These limitations may explain why even very advanced second-language learners continue to mani fest lexical errors in such areas as the use of prepositions and collocations. Final ly, research with ELLs indicates that independent reading along with structured support for comprehension and language development facilitates ELLs’ language. A related issue concerns the number of exposures to a word or expression needed for incidental acquisition to occur. Summarizing the research, Schmitt concluded that “8–10 reading exposures may give learners a reason able chance of acquiring an initial receptive knowledge of words.” However, the number is likely to be highly variable depending on a variety of factors such as the language proficiency of the readers, the difficulty of the texts, and the conceptual difficulty of the words. It will also depend on the depth of processing involved when readers encounter words. “Exposure” may involve no more than fleeting at tention to a word, or it may involve more deliberate attempts to process the form and meaning of the word. All in all, these studies of learning from context show that context can pro - duce learning of word meanings for both native English speakers and ELLs, that

the probability of learning a word from a single occurrence is low, and that the probability of learning a word from context increases substantially with additional occurrences of the word. In giving students books to read on their own, it is im - portant to ensure that the texts are ones they can read with accuracy, fluency, and good comprehension. Television. Research with native English speakers indicates that education al television programs can be a source of language learning for these students. Several studies have also found that exposing ELLs to high-quality television can also be effective in developing their vocabu lary. For example, Neuman and Koskinen found that middle-grade ELLs who watched captioned episodes of 3-2- 1 Contact, a high-quality science program, outperformed their classmates who just read from their science textbooks on mea sures of word recognition, understanding sentences, and word meaning. In addi tion, these students also performed better than their classmates who watched the television program without captions. It should also be noted that only ELLs with sufficient English proficiency benefited from the television programming, indicat ing the need to consider this variable when designing instruction.

Chapter II Breadth of Vocabulary Knowledge The breadth of vocabulary knowledge refers to the size or quantity of vocabulary which is partially or fully known by learners 1 . It is considered a continuum, ranging from partial to full knowledge. Moreover, Schmitt suggests that all vocabulary knowledge can be ranged on a cline as being not known- partially-fully known applying this to spelling, as shown in. Aspects of lexical knowledge ranging from zero to partial to precise from Milton investigated the annual growth of the vocabulary size of British learners of French up to graduation from a language school. His study offered a good example of documenting the incremental development of lexical knowledge over time, particularly at the beginning stages of the learning process. He used a French vocabulary size test which incorporated Bardot’s frequency levels. The test took a paper and pencil form and comprised 120 Yes/No answers to whether the learners know the word or not. The time of completing the test was not restricted; however, it was usually completed within 5 to 10 minutes. Moreover, 20 unreal words were added to the test and 20 real words were chosen randomly for every 1000 word level out of5,100 frequency word bands. The number of Yes answers to real words was adjusted to minimize guessing. As suggested by Milton, the results show that while learners of French advance from one school year to another so does their vocabulary size. While year 7 learners’ mean score was 311, the score of year 13 learners had increased to 1930. Furthermore, an ANOVA test confirmed a significant relationship between the increase in vocabulary breadth and the time the learners spent on learning. Consequently, Milton’s study thus provided further support for the notion of a gradual or incremental increase in vocabulary size by EFL learners. 1 Hunt, A., & Beglar, D. (2005). Annual progress in frequency bands at school level More recently, in a longitudinal study tracked the gradual increase in receptive vocabulary knowledge of 224 young Spanish learners of EFL. The goal of the study was to measure the learners’ receptive vocabulary size growth over a period of four years and to check the effect of target language exposure on the learners’ vocabulary knowledge size. The study incorporated the 2k frequency level of Schmitt, Schmitt and Clapham Vocabulary Levels Test. Starting with an exposure of 419 target language interaction hours in 4th grade, learners had 524, 629 and 734 target language interactions in their 5th, 6th and 7 th grade, respectively. They found that the learners’ receptive vocabulary knowledge size grew significantly as they moved from one grade to another. In relation to the 2k frequency level, the learners added 148 words from 4th to 5th grade, 122 words from 5th to 6th grade, and 186 words from 6th to 7th grade to their receptive vocabulary knowledge. We conclude from these results that vocabulary learning is incremental in terms of an adequate vocabulary size. 2.1 Depth of Vocabulary Knowledge Depth of vocabulary knowledge refers to how well a learner knows a word in terms of several lexical aspects such as form, meaning and use. One of the few longitudinal studies that sheds more light onto the incremental nature of increasing the depth of vocabulary knowledge was that of Schmitt. His study tracked three advanced L2 university students’ knowledge of 11 words over the course of one academic year with respect to spelling, associations, grammatical information and meaning. Schmitt conducted three interviews where he used different measurements for each knowledge type: writing for a test for spelling, providing three words in response to a target word stimulus for association and knowing the target word’s word class and use for grammatical information.

The results of spelling test show that learners have improved their spelling across the study period. Schmitt explains that the learners had little problems regarding spelling even when they did not know the meaning of words. As a result, he suggests that spelling might be one of the first acquired aspects of vocabulary knowledge. Moreover, learners’ scores for associations indicate a gradual improvement as they become more native-like over time. Regarding the grammatical information aspect, only one participant shows a steady growth in grammatical knowledge which might be due to the fact that this participant spent extra time looking up words in the dictionary. The development of the word knowledge types does not follow a particular order rather some knowledge aspects seem to develop before others. Moreover, mastery of nouns and verbs seems to come before adjectives and adverbs. Accordingly, the current study highlights the incremental nature of the depth of vocabulary knowledge where learners become more proficient in learning the target language over time. More heat than light has been generated with respect to the incremental learning of multiple word knowledge aspects through extensive reading. Pagoda and Schmitt provide a good example to capture degrees of not only the knowledge of meaning but also other types of lexical knowledge such as spelling and grammatical characteristics. For this purpose, they conducted a case study of a 27- year old learner of French. The task was to read four graded readers with roughly a total of 30,000 words over a period of a month. The subject was given 133 words which contained 70 nouns and 63 verbs and was tested before and after the reading treatment. The pre- and post-tests of the learner’s orthography, meaning and grammatical behaviour of words were done in a one-on-one interview similar to the measurement approach carried out by Schmitt. The length of the spelling task was nearly 90 minutes while the administration of meaning and grammar tasks lasted two and a half hours.

The results suggest that extensive reading helped to improve aspects of vocabulary knowledge. There was considerable growth of the spelling part for all nouns and most verbs. That is, the learner at Time 1 scored 98 out of a total 266 spelling points, and higher with 159 out of 266 points at Time 2. In the meaning facet, there was an improvement though to a lesser degree for both noun and verb classes. Specifically, the analysis of the interview revealed that the learner obtained scored 22 out of 266 at Time 1 and 63 out of 266 at Time 2. At the same time, the overall growth in grammatical knowledge was very small. The rate of nouns learned was 18 out of 142 at Time 1 but improved to 60 out of 142 at Time 2. However, the number of verbs learned at Time 1 was only five out of 126 and 26 out of 126 at Time 2. It should be noted that Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests showed significant gains of p<. 001 in all types of word knowledge but especially in verb class. Pigada and Schmitt concluded that extensive reading influenced the learner’s growth in terms of orthography, meaning and grammatical types of lexical knowledge, “translating to a pick-up rate of about one of every 1.5 words tested” . However, they were quick to warn that it was rather difficult to believe that the learner had complete mastery of these three types of word knowledge given that only 6% of the target words were learned. The researchers’ contribution is valuable regarding the incremental development of vocabulary aspects of the learner when encountering new words in reading texts. We may conclude that Pigada and Schmitt’s study has provided us with insights concerning the gradual process of learning vocabulary. That is, spelling was found to be improved before other facets of lexical knowledge such as meaning and grammatical mastery of words In the same manner, Webb conducted a study exploring the effect of multiple exposures on the depth of vocabulary knowledge. The study used ten tests to measure 121 learners’ vocabulary knowledge aspects such as orthography, associations and the meaning-form link. The participants were Japanese university students of English in their second year; they had been learning English for at least seven years. Prior to administering the

tests the learners were divided into four groups and were then required to read a number of pages in a vocabulary reading comprehension task. The number of target words on each page was 1, 3, 7 and 10 for groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The time of the task was controlled, depending on the number of target words that occurred in each group, where group 1 had four minutes, group 2 had 12 minutes, group 3 had 28 minutes, and group 4 had 40 minutes. Upon completion of the task, the members of the four groups took a surprise vocabulary test to compare the group scores in order to establish the effect of exposure on the development of vocabulary learning. The results suggest an overall growth in all aspects of vocabulary knowledge. 3It is evident that the growth of vocabulary knowledge is dependent on the number of encounters with the target words in context, which further support provided by the effect of multiple exposures in the incremental process of vocabulary learning. Hence, Melka points out the impossibility of having a clear and adequate definition to distinguish between the two notions. However, Melka provides a possible definition of

The growth of the learners’ receptive knowledge is clearly impressive. It appears that the learners increased their receptive vocabulary knowledge by 84% as they moved from 10th to 11th grade. In other words, the results indicate that the learners gained about 1600 word in one year. Similarly, the controlled productive knowledge of the learners improved by about 50%, gaining about 850 words in one year. On the other hand, the results from the free productive test did not reveal any significant growth. Therefore, both receptive and controlled productive vocabulary knowledge seemed to develop gradually over time, while the free productive ability seemed to lag behind. For receptive and controlled productive knowledge, the ratio is 89% in grade 10 while it goes down to 72% in grade 11. Laufer suggests that such results could lead to the speculation that possessing high receptive vocabulary knowledge means further widening the gap with the controlled productive vocabulary knowledge. In other words, learners acquire a lot of vocabulary receptively and multiple exposures reinforce development of their receptive vocabulary knowledge, while they normally tend to use a number of the most frequent words and expressions in communication. Last but not least, the ratio between free productive vocabulary and other aspects of vocabulary knowledge is impossible to ascertain because the measurement was based on words’ frequency not the subjects’ knowledge of the word. As informative as it might be, while this study highlights the growth of receptive and productive knowledge and compared the ratios obtaining between them, it did so without addressing the amount of vocabulary knowledge needed to move to productive use. As mentioned above in this section, this proves to be of some difficulty and requires further investigation. Min attempted to explore the effectiveness of reading supplemented with vocabulary tasks versus reading only for vocabulary growth in an instructional setting. One of the research questions

attempted to be answered in Min’s study was whether reading instruction in combination with vocabulary focused activities or a narrow reading treatment would explain the incremental nature of receptive and productive vocabulary learning over a period of three months. The study involved 50 Chinese high school students in Taiwan. Participants were divided into two groups: experimental group (n=25) and control group (n=25). The instruction treatments were given in five sessions of two hours each within the normal English class. Learners were asked their degrees of receptive and productive knowledge of the target words using the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale. The researcher administered a pre-test (50 target words) before the treatment to corroborate that these words were not known. Post-test and delayed test (after the instruction period and again three months later) were conducted to provide information on the acquisition and retention of meaning of the unknown words. The three measurement periods were analysed with t- tests which indicated that the instruction given to the experimental group had a positive and significant effect than their control counterparts ( t= 9.08, p< .01) at the time of acquisition and ( t= 5.10, p< .01) at the time of retention. The results of the receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge tests are presented in Table 5 above. The findings showed that the learners who had the treatment made gains of 32.32% in receptive word knowledge and of 36.24% in productive word knowledge. Despite the fact that the control group acquired a large amount of vocabulary, it made less gain of 26.88% in receptive word knowledge and of 18.32% in productive word knowledge. Consequently, we can say that the instructional treatment helped to improve certain aspects of word knowledge such as recognition and production incrementally and simultaneously over time. As noted in Chapter 1, estimates of the number of words in native English- speaking students’ reading vocabularies vary considerably depending on how the

estimate is made. Many of these estimates can be dismissed or at least very strong - ly questioned because of such factors as the size of the dictionary from which words were sampled, the definition of what constitutes a word, the method of test - ing, the sampling procedures used, and such ad hoc requirements as that a word appear in a number of different dictionaries. The most unbiased estimate of the size of native English-speaking students’ reading vocabularies comes, in our judgment, from work done by Nagy and Herman. Using data gathered from the Nagy and Anderson study, Nagy and Herman recalibrated earlier estimates and concluded that 3rd-graders’ reading vocabularies average about 10,000 words, that 12th-graders’ reading vo cabularies average about 40,000 words, and that schoolchildren therefore learn about 3,000 words each year. These figures refer to word families as previous ly described, but they do not include idioms, other multiword units, multiple meanings, or proper nouns, which would raise the figure considerably. All in all, our best estimate— based on the work of Anderson and Nagy Anglin Miller and Wakefield Nagy and Anderson Nagy and Her man and White, Graves, and Slater —is that average 12th- graders know something like 50,000 word families and learn from 3,000 to 4,000 words each year. These figures, however, are for native English speakers. ELLs, of course, have smaller English vocabularies. Moreover, the vocabularies of ELLs vary tre mendously depending on their levels of first-language literacy development and second-language proficiency. The goal is to help all students develop an extensive vocabulary—something like 50,000 words—over their years in school. Based on this goal, many ELLs face a huge word-learning task. There is one other crucial fact about the vocabulary-learning task that students face: The English language includes a very large number of infrequent words and a very small number of frequent words. Here are some examples of just how im portant frequent words are: The 100 most frequent words account for about 50% of the words in a typical text; the 1,000 most frequent words for about 70%; and the 5,000 most frequent words for about 80%. If a student does not know these

very frequent words, he will be repeatedly stumbling over the words in anything other than a book with severely controlled vocabulary.

As we see it, the bottom line with respect to the number of words students eventually learn and what to do about helping them learn them is this: There are far too many words to teach all of them directly. There is a much smaller number of frequent words, and these can be taught directly. Teaching 2,000 to 4,000 of the most frequent word families directly, or at least ensuring that all children know these words as soon as possible, is a feasible task. In Chapter 3, we will discuss ways of selecting and teaching these very frequent words; and in Chapter 4, we will suggest how to select and teach less frequent words. With regard to ELLs, several studies have shown that while ELLs’ vocabulary growth rates are similar to and may even surpass those of native English speak ers, they are typically 2 to 3 years behind native English-speaking students in vo cabulary knowledge, and a large vocabulary gap remains. Additionally, some data indicate that the sequence in which ELLs learn words is similar to that in which native English speakers learn them. We can draw some important conclusions from this information: It is crucial to provide early, systematic, effective vocabulary instruction for ELLs to enable them to catch up to their native English-speaking peers as soon as possible, thus enabling them to take advantage of grade-appropriate instruction across the content areas. 2.1 Teaching students who are clearly of different levels. You may often be teaching a class which has students who are clearly of different levels. They may have different starting levels of English or they may learn at very different speeds - for any number of reasons. Discussion and needs analysis Student self-awareness Work groupings Discussion and needs analysis It is easy for students to get frustrated in a class of mixed ability. Stronger students may feel held back, weaker students may feel pressured. The teacher may feel stressed. The best solution to this is to have an open-class discussion about the classroom situation - to ensure the best for everyone it is better to acknowledge the situation and for everyone to agree how to deal with it. It is probably best to stage and structure the discussion. Needs Analysis Use a needs analysis to prompt the students to reflect upon their learning style, learning strategies, language needs, learning enjoyment, motivation, language strengths and weaknesses. Questions that might be included are... What kinds of class activities do you enjoy / benefit from? Which language skill do you most wish to develop? Do you prefer working individually or with a partner? Would you rather sit and listen to the teacher all lesson or participate in group work? Students compare their answers in pairs or small groups. You should collect the

information and prepare a statistical representation of the key questions and answers. This will help to develop the sense of shared community in the class. Explain and discuss Explain the mixed-level situation to the students and give a list of possible approaches to the teaching and learning. In pairs, the students rank the approaches/ ideas according to their suitability for the situation. Following feedback, you should highlight the strategies you plan to use. A student contract Developing with the students, or perhaps writing it yourself, a contract of behavior for activities is a useful device. 'I will help and support my activity partner.' 'I will participate in group work.' Tell them what you are going to do If you think your students are not mature enough to carry out this kind of reflection, explain the situation to the class and tell them what strategies you will be using. If students know what to expect, you can hope that they will cooperate. All of the above work could be done in the mother tongue, although I feel it is best done primarily in the target language (as it draws attention to the fact that this is a learning language issue.) Student self-awareness Encourage students to develop an awareness of their own language abilities and learning needs. What are their strengths and weaknesses, and how can they focus on these? How can they measure their own progress This may take the form of a learner's diary, regular self-assessment, keeping records of mistakes, keeping a record of things learnt.

Work groupings Varying the way students work in the class will help meet the variety of levels in the class. Pair work You can pair strong with strong, weak with weak, or strong with weak. Perhaps in a very controlled activity, the strong with weak will work well. In a freer activity, perhaps strong with strong will be of benefit. Variety in the pairings is the key here - and you should also be sensitive to the general relationships between different students, and learn to note who works well with whom. Group work These groups could be of mixed levels or similar ones. The hope is that in a smaller group, the weaker student will feel more able to contribute. Also, if the group is working with a set of information, divide the information between the students, forcing them to work together. You may consider dividing your class into groups by level for the whole lesson, enabling you to give a different level or number of tasks to each group. Discussion of this strategy with the class should help prevent stigmatization. Whole class - mingles This is a favored strategy of mine. A mingle activity involves students talking or interacting with many different members of the class in a short period of time in order to achieve a task. This means that any one student will work with students at different levels - experiencing stronger and weaker levels of communication. This supports the weaker students and provides opportunities for the stronger ones. A classic activity is a 'Find someone who...' In this activity the student has to survey the class to find people who…(for example) …have got something - Do you have a CD player? Or… …have done something - Have you eaten fish and chips? Or…

…like something - Do you like tennis? If a student answers yes to a question, then the other student should ask for more information. If a student answers no, then the other should find a new person to ask, and may come back to the first student with another question later on. The potential for this is endless. It is a great way to provide practice of a particular language structure/area (10 questions all using the past simple) and provides controlled practice as well as the opportunity for further freer discussion. It also creates a lively classroom dynamic. Mingles can take many forms - students may have to find the person who has a matching word to theirs, or the second half of a split sentence. The students may all have the same or different questions, or a mixture. The key is the general principle of an information gap or communicative need. Overall, variety in the types of working groups, and an open discussion of the class situation will help to deal with some of the difficulties that are present in mixed ability classes. The aim of these strategies is to create a positive working environment, which is all part of ensuring better learning.

Conclusion This paper comprises reviews and discussions of relevant studies concerning the incremental nature of vocabulary acquisition. Learners’ size of their SL/FL vocabulary gradually develops in a number of ways, with multiple exposures to target words enhancing the process. We can infer that vocabulary learning is not limited to the meaning facet of word knowledge and that other facets of lexical knowledge are part of the learning process. This implies that the description of vocabulary knowledge based on the meaning aspect is not accurate and does not do justice to the complexity of word knowledge. We have seen that the mastery of word knowledge is best seen as being on a continuum, both overall as well as in respect of single word knowledge. Moreover, this knowledge involves recognizing the word when it is read or heard (receptive knowledge) or being able to use it in writing or speaking (productive knowledge). We have also discussed how the level of mastery of receptive and productive knowledge can vary, thus providing evidence of the gradual and complicated nature of the process of vocabulary acquisition. The inconsistency of the degrees of knowledge between the receptive and productive forms often stems from the lack of conceptualization of what receptive and productive mastery of word entails. The issue of drawing a line between receptive and productive knowledge has been raised but research has not yet been able to come to any conclusion. That is it is still unknown what type and amount of vocabulary knowledge are necessary to push the language learners to the productive level of mastery. The breadth of vocabulary knowledge refers to the size or quantity of vocabulary which is partially or fully known by learners. It is considered a continuum, ranging from partial to full knowledge. Moreover, Schmitt suggests that all vocabulary knowledge can be ranged on a cline as being not known- partially-fully known applying this to spelling, as shown in.

Similarly, the controlled productive knowledge of the learners improved by about 50%, gaining about 850 words in one year. On the other hand, the results from the free productive test did not reveal any significant growth. Therefore, both receptive and controlled productive vocabulary knowledge seemed to develop gradually over time, while the free productive ability seemed to lag behind.
