Introduction The actuality of the work. Learning a foreign language at an early age has become a controversial issue over the last decade. Young learner’s acquisition of a foreign language is more important than any other phases of the age period, since this stage of age defines the further future of their learning. When a child starts learning a foreign language, the process of learning becomes more motivative, interesting and encouraging for them as the foreign language itself is a new and strange or wonderful adventure in their view. Together with being motivative and interesting, it enriches their knowledge of language and vocabulary. However, just as a coin has two sides early childhood foreign language learning also has its own advantages and disadvantages. The course work will generalize the importance of early language learning and will then discuss the benefits and disadvantages of learning a foreign language at a younger age. The aim of the work is to give general information about the peculiarities of early language learning and a child’s ability to acquire and then to discuss both contrasting points of view about early language learning. The tasks of the course work include:  to state the characteristic features of early language learning;  to analyze a young learner’s ability to acquire a foreign language and to illustrate them with a real-life-based examples;  to practically investigate a young learner’s process of learning a foreign language held in laboratories;  to discuss both contrasting views of early language learning;  to determine the importance of teaching a foreign language to young learners; ~ 2 ~

 to study various scientists’ views on this topic to make a balanced conclusion and to decide whether a foreign language should be taught to young learners or not; The practical significance of the work. The results of the course work will be useful:  for teacher and students to take into account the peculiarities of childhood language learning when teaching a foreign language;  for independent investigators when carrying out an experiment on young learner’s ability to acquire a foreign language;  for those who are interested in methods of teaching to create a new methodology for young language learners. The structure of the work. It includes an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, an appendix and used literature. Chapter I provides information about the characteristic features of early language learning Chapter II gives a practical investigation on young learner’s acquisition of foreign language and presents discussion of pros and cons of early language learning. ~ 3 ~

Chapter I. THE CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF EARLY LANGUAGE LEARNING 1.1 Young learner’s acquisition and learning of a foreign language First of all, we should begin with the word “childhood” and its meanings. The word “childhood” varies from country to country. In many parts of the world kids take on “adult” responsibilities at ages when in other countries they are still protected within their schools. These differences will guide to differences in the purposes of language learning. Likewise, attitudes to authority, to teaching and to learning generally vary from culture to culture. However, we can list a number of characteristics which young learners share. In the first place, young learners are merely now starting their schooling, so that teachers have an important chance to mould their expectations of life in school. As a group they are potentially more differentiated than secondary or adult learners, for they are closer to their varied home cultures and new to the conventionality increasingly required across cultural groupings by the school. Apart from this, children usually have a tendency to be dedicated and excited learners, without the inhibitions which older children bring to their schooling. Moreover, their learning can be intimately associated with their development of thoughts and concepts, for the reason that it is so close to their first experience of formal schooling. To conclude with young learners, we mention that they also want physical movement and action as much as inspiration for their thinking, and as we must say that the closer together these can be the better results we will have in the end. After defining the term “childhood” and presenting the basic characteristics that the majority of primary level learners usually share, now we will make an effort to define what we mean when we talk about early start. Early start is related to the age of the learner and as we can understand age is an important factor and of course plays a major role in learning a language. When we talk about early start, basically, we mean what is the most appropriate age for a child to start learning a foreign language. ~ 4 ~

There is a widely-held belief that younger learners do better than older learners. This is supported by the critical period hypothesis according to which there is a fixed span of years during which language learning can take place naturally and easily and after which it is not probable to be totally successful, of course this will be examined extensively in another part of this project. Studies of learners in naturalistic learning situations provide the most convincing evidence that the younger the better. From the above we understand that age is an important aspect in the field of second language acquisition and plays a special role in the process of learning a language. So, early start is strongly connected with age or let ‟ s put it in another way, age and early start is the same thing and more specifically in this research we give the obvious picture that when we say early start we mean the age of the child. Last, but not least, judging from the above, we summarize with the following: the sooner the better, meaning that children should start at a young age learning a second language in order to benefit from the procedure and acquire as much as possible from the foreign language. There has been an upsurge in the last few decades as far as the English language is concerned. English has become a lingua franca; it is a language which is learned in all over the world because it is an easy one comparing it with other languages for example Greek or Chinese. Everyone can communicate through English and it is very important especially for the percentage of people who are involved in trade. If we go back in time, for example twenty years ago, we will realize that people did not give much attention in the English language. In Greece, few people were interested in English and most of them lived in big cities such as Athens; in villages there was a completely different situation because back then they were keen on professions like teacher, lawyer or peasants. Furthermore, in those years the only university which promoted its certificates was the University of Cambridge which it is thought that it is the ~ 5 ~

most prestigious one still today. Moreover, the material was very limited because there was no interest in foreign languages. Nowadays, things have changed rapidly due to globalization which played a basic role in the development of the English language. In Greece, a significant step is that English has been introduced in public schools as a required lesson for children and there has been an increase in foreign language institutes known as frontistiria in the Greek market and all that due to the increased interest from the people. Moreover, the books concerning young learners come out every year in many different colors and each of these books offers different things and at the end you do not know which book to purchase for your child. In addition to the above, we have to mention that in the Greek market many English and American universities promote their degrees and the people literally „run ‟ to give and basically pass these examinations and get a certificate because a young person must know English in order to find a job. Apart from the above, we observe that the last few years there is a revival of interest in the teaching to young learners. After much interest in the 1960s, the period of communicative language teaching saw a concentration on adults, with relatively little concern for primary level activity but now this is changing. Young learners are now in the center of the education and much emphasis is given on them. Massive material for teachers on how to teach young learners and many seminars are held in order to improve children ‟ s language skills. The most impressive part is that universities in the States and in England have created especially designed master degrees on teaching English to young learners, for instance the University of York has done a master ‟ s degree with a title like the one which was given above. As we understand from the above there is a concentration on young learners and to teach them effectively and this is very important due to the fact that this change is a result of the research conducted in the past few decades concerning issues such as second language acquisition or neurolinguistics which revealed that we should focus on children ~ 6 ~

because their brain is like a sponge which keeps everything inside and we should take advantage from that and find ways to help children learn as much as possible easily. Now, we will move on to the next section in which we will learn about the human brain and its procedures. There is an intimate link concerning language and the brain. Specific areas of the brain are devoted to language and damage to these areas disrupts language. After much research conducted in this field has proved that injury, removal or any kind of problem in the left hemisphere can cause severe consequences for language development especially in children. According to the above findings scientists have also come up with the conclusion that normal brain development depends on early and regular exposure to language. But let ‟ s have a closer look in the complex system called brain; the brain is roughly organized like a peach in that there is a large outer layer, the cerebrum, surrounding an inner kernel, the brainstem, which keeps people alive. The brain divided in two parts, the cerebral hemispheres, one on the right and one on the left connected like Siamese twins. The former controls the left side of the body and the latter the right. One of them, usually the left, is the more powerful dominant hemisphere. This is not only due to the ability it has to control the right side of the body – and the majority of humans are right-handed- but also because it normally controls language. In the early part of the nineteenth century Franz Joseph Gall put forth theories of localization, which means that different human abilities and behaviors were noticeable to specific parts of the brain. It was not until 1861 that language was specifically related to the left side of the brain. At a scientific meeting in Paris, Paul Broca stated that we speak with the left hemisphere on the basis of his finding that damage to the front part of the left side, now called Broca ‟ s area, had as a consequence loss of speech while damage to the right hemisphere did not. Language, then, is said to be lateralized. Lateralization is the term used to refer to any cognitive functions ~ 7 ~

which are primarily localized to one side of the brain or the other. Nowadays, with such damages in Broca ‟ s area are said to suffer from Broca ‟ s aphasia. Aphasia is the neurological definition used to refer to language problems that follow brain lesions caused by a stroke, a gunshot wound, or infection. The basic problems that patients who have Broca ‟ s aphasia face are the following: labored speech, disturbed word order, omission of grammatical morphemes such as articles, prepositions etc., and also word-funding pauses; for instance, a patient said “yes-ah-Monday ah-dad-and dad-ah-hospital-and ah-…..ah girl-and gums and I”. Moreover, as we understand Broca ‟ s aphasics show syntactic deficits. Let ‟ s return to language and more specifically how a child can acquire language. Under normal conditions, a child is introduced to language almost at the moment of birth. Adults talk to the child and to each other in the presence of him/her. Children do not have need of explicit language instruction but they do need contact with the language in order to develop normally. Children who do not receive linguistic input during their early years in life do not accomplish native like grammatical competence. Both behavioral tests and brain imaging studies have shown that late exposure to language alters the primary organization of the brain for language. The Critical Age Hypothesis is a division of the biological basis of language and states clearly that the ability to learn a native language within a fixed period, meaning from birth up until puberty. The period is referred to as critical period. During this critical period, language acquisition proceeds easily, quickly, and without external involvement. Furthermore, studies have proved that after this stage the acquisition of grammar is difficult and for some people never fully achieved. Children deprived of language during this period demonstrate atypical patterns of brain lateralization. It is widely believed from scientists that during childhood the human brain is most ready to receive and learn a particular language. If a child does not acquire language at that specific time for any number of reasons then, ~ 8 ~

this child, unfortunately, will face a great difficulty to learn language later on. A large percentage of children in recent years, due to environments of extreme social isolation were unable to adapt fully the language, these examples constitute, confirm and also give insight into what happens when lateralization process takes place without an accompanying linguistic input. At this point we will present some notable examples in order to realize the importance of the situation. A distinguished one, which came to the light of publicity in 1970, is that of Genie, a 13-year-old who had spent most of her life tied to a chair locked in a small room. Her father was intolerant of any kind of noise and had beaten Genie whenever she made a noise. Moreover, there had been no radio or television and the child ‟ s only human contact was forbidden, even her mother was not allowed to spend more than a few minutes with her, only long enough to feed her. Genie had spent her whole life in a state of physical, sensory and psychological deprivation.8As a conclusion, Genie was unable to use language, but when she was brought into care she began to respond trying to imitate sounds and communicate. She was able to gain knowledge of a large vocabulary, including colors, shapes and objects but her syntax remained simple and morphology never fully developed. The linguist Susan Curtiss who worked with her for many years reports that “the stringing together of content words, often with rich and clear meaning, but with little grammatical structure”.9 Genie started learning language after the critical period and unfortunately she was never able to fully acquire the grammatical rules of English; moreover, it should be mentioned that many utterances produced by her at the age of 15 were not different from those produced by agrammatic aphasics. None of these children, due to isolation, was able to speak or knew any language at the moment of reintroduction to the social environment. Another important case which also should be mentioned is that of a deaf woman called Chelsea, in California. Doctors wrongly diagnosed her as ~ 9 ~

retarded and as a result she never attended school but fortunately a neurologist, after many years, diagnosed her real problem so Chelsea received extensive language therapy and was able, little by little, to acquire a large vocabulary but, just like Genie, could not develop grammar. A study of the localization of language in her brain showed an equivalent reply to language in both hemispheres. 1.2 A controversial issue over early language learning Learning a second language, particularly in a classroom situation, is not such a natural or automatic process. The learner already has a language that allows him to communicate. To ask him/her to give up that language and return to some pre-linguistic stage of development is not particularly realistic. Most people attempt to learn another language during their teenage or adult years in few hours each week of school time and by spending some others in private foreign language schools rather than via continuous contact experienced by a child, with lots of other occupations in contrast to children that have little to do and with an already known language available for most of their daily communicative requirements. Moreover, they face problems such as cannot cope with the new sounds of another language for example French or Japanese, they cannot pronounce easily words, they generally have an accent and they may make syntactic or morphological mistakes that are unlike errors of children acquiring their first language. Second language users usually make word order errors, more specifically, early in their development, as well as morphological ones in grammatical gender and case. Of course, they tend to fossilize and unfortunately, no amount of teaching or correction can undo this situation. With some exceptions, adults do not simply pick up a second language. It usually requires careful concentration, if not intense study and memorization, to become proficient in a second language. Once again with the exception of some remarkable individuals, adult second-language learners do not often accomplish ~ 10 ~

native like grammatical competence in the second language. So, we can conclude that age is a significant factor in developing second language acquisition and of course, once again, we should mention that the critical period is strongly related to age and by extension not only to the acquisition of the first language but also plays a vital role in the acquisition of the second language, respectively. Many experts believe that learning the language before the age of ten years allow children to speak correct and fluent as an indigenous person. Therefore, whatever the earlier children become familiar with foreign language, he have better chance to speak proficiency. On the other hand language learning, except native language, can provide develop a lifelong ability to more communicate with others. One of the important advantages of mastering a foreign language is access to better job opportunities and the person will find deeper understanding to their own culture and other nations. Including the benefits of knowing a foreign language in today's society, enhancing economic competitiveness in the external surface, improving global communications and maintains and manage political and security interests of a country. Research has shown that, if languages learning in children before puberty, children are found more chances to speak a foreign language with a completely native pronunciation. In addition, familiarity child with the culture of other nations spread his views and attitudes and provides the opportunity for him to communicate with other people. We know now that studying a foreign language offers surprising benefits to children. Research has demonstrated improved ability to communicate, better cognitive development, richer cultural awareness and, ultimately, better job opportunities for those who know a foreign language Ferreira, F., & Morrison, F. J. (1994). What’s more, today’s children will all be required to have command of two languages by the time they reach college. Research suggests that from birth ~ 11 ~

through age 10 is the best time to introduce new languages to a young child. The child will learn the language faster, retain it better and most often speak it with near-native pronunciation. Recent research indicates a young child up through age 5 can learn and process up to five languages! Many parents deliberate over how to bring a new language into their little one’s life. Many experts agree the bilingual approach for the very young child is best. Today’s parents know the importance of being bilingual. Now they just need to know where to turn for assistance in finding fun and affordable bilingual products that will bring the target language into their child’s life. The internet has made their search much easier than five years ago. Look for bilingual programs that allow you to sample their visual or audio products on line so that you get a good feel for the content and style of the language learning within that particular program. These examples of language learning, processing, and creation represent just a few of the many developments between birth and linguistic maturity. During this period, children discover the raw materials in the sounds (or gestures) of their language, learn how they are assembled into longer strings, and map these combinations onto meaning. These processes unfold simultaneously, requiring children to integrate their capacities as they learn, to crack the code of communication that surrounds them. Despite layers of complexity, each currently beyond the reach of modern computers, young children readily solve the linguistic puzzles facing them, even surpassing their input when it lacks the expected structure. No less determined, researchers are assembling a variety of methodologies to uncover the mechanisms underlying language acquisition. Months before infants utter their first word, their early language-learning mechanisms can be examined by recording subtle responses to new combinations of sounds. Once children begin to link words together, experiments using real-time measures of language processing can reveal the ways linguistic and nonlinguistic information are integrated during listening. Natural experiments in which ~ 12 ~

children are faced with minimal language exposure can reveal the extent of inborn language-learning capacities and their effect on language creation and change. As these techniques and others probing the child's mind are developed and their findings integrated, they will reveal the child's solution to the puzzle of learning a language. Exposing your child to a foreign language young allows a child to optimize his or her learning potential, helping to shape the brain at its most flexible stage. Young children are uniquely suited to learning a foreign language. Learning a foreign language at a young age is cognitively as easy as learning a first language. Young children can acquire native-like fluency as easily as they learned to walk. Where adults have to work through an established first- language system, studying explicit grammar rules and practicing rote drills, the young kids learn naturally, absorbing the sounds, structures, intonation patterns and rules of a foreign language intuitively, as they did their mother tongue. The young brain is inherently flexible, uniquely hard-wired to acquire language naturally. Early childhood is the best time for language acquisition. Ease of learning a foreign language diminishes with age. Between birth and adolescence the brain is hard-wired to acquire language naturally. As child approaches puberty, the nature of language learning and storage changes, becoming less flexible. Why do children learn languages well, when even adults who want to learn them have trouble with them? Innate abilities aside, children have a number of powerful advantages. They can devote almost their full time to it. Adults consider half an hour's study a day to be onerous. Their motivation is intense. Adults rarely have to spend much of their time in the company of people they need to talk to but can't; children can get very little of what they want without learning language(s). If adults could be placed in a similar situation, they might well learn languages as readily (I don't say 'easily'!) as children. ~ 13 ~

There are some advantages that bilingual children have when they learn English as a foreign or second language. A remarkable advantage is that bilingualism trains children to focus their attention on the relevant variables in the context, particularly information that is ambiguous or contradictory. Increased cognitive abilities may help children to develop the necessary skills that are thought to be involved in effective communication. For example, knowing two words that name the same concept like: “nice and great” could help children develop the understanding that an object or event can be represented in more than one way, which could support children’s understanding of other people’s perspectives. "Research has shown that after 10 or 12 years old the brain handles language differently because until then it is constantly making neurological connections. As children we process language in the frontal lobe of the brain. But if we learn a language as a teenager or adult, the brain has to 'scramble' to find storage space somewhere else. So in simple terms, learning languages as a child the brain absorbs them readily, after that it requires much harder work.” (National Literacy Trust 2007 - Developing Language for Life.). According to Piaget the child is seen as frequently interacting with the world around him/her, solving problems that are presented by the setting. It is through taking action to solve problems that learning occurs. Piaget gives a much less vital role to language in cognitive development than does Vygotsky. It is action, rather than the development of the first language which, for Piaget, is essential to cognitive development. Piagetian psychology differentiates two ways in which development can take place as a consequence of activity: assimilation and accommodation. The former happens when an action takes place without any change to the child and the latter involves the child adjusting to features of the environment in some way. Both of the above are originally adaptive processes of actions but they turn out to be process of thinking. ~ 14 ~

Accommodation is an important suggestion that has been taken into second language learning under the label „reconstructing ‟ , used to refer to the re- organization of mental representations of a language. From a Piagetian perspective, a child ‟ s thinking develops as slow growth of knowledge and intellectual skills towards a final stage of proper, rational thinking. Though, gradual growth is punctuated with specific basic changes, which cause the child to pass through a series of stages. At each stage, the child is competent of some types of thinking but still incapable of others. Particularly, the Piagetian endpoint of development – thinking that can influence formal abstract categories using rules of logic – is held to be unavailable to children before they reach 11 years of age or more. Vygotsky ‟ s views of development differ from Piaget ‟ s in the importance he gives to language and to other people in the child ‟ s world. The development of the child ‟ s first language in the second year of life is held to produce a fundamental move in cognitive development. Language provides the child with a new tool, opens up new opportunities for doing things and for organizing information through the use of words as symbols. Young children can often be heard talking to themselves and organizing themselves as they carry out tasks or play, in what is called private speech. As children get older they speak less and less aloud, and distinguish between social speech for others and „inner speech ‟ , which continues to play an important role in regulating and controlling behavior. Vygotsky placed great emphasis on the importance of social interaction in cognitive development and more specifically in the development of language and thinking. On the whole, Vygotsky saw the child as first doing things in social environment, interacting with other people and how language is helping in many different ways and steadily changing and going away from reliance on others to independent action and thinking. Now, let ‟ s go back and present the advantages of starting a foreign language in the early years of life. There is a significant discuss about whether children learn language better or more ~ 15 ~

competently than older learners or adults. Generally speaking the data is uncertain and vague. A large percentage of people are in favor of the claim that it ‟ s better to start at a young age. First of all, young children have more opportunities than adults because they don ‟ t have other responsibilities but their only occupation is to learn and study. Second of all, they are learning all the time without having the worries and responsibilities of adults. Their parents, friends, and teachers help them in learning. We all know that children are curious and ask always “why?” even if they know the answer; this process ‟ s result is that it helps them learn the world. Moreover, they have a physically powerful individual need to learn if they are surrounded by people speaking the second language, and there are strong social pressures to do what their elders expect. Furthermore, the brain is more adaptable before puberty than after, and that acquisition of languages is probable without self-consciousness at an early age. Another advantage is that children have less negative attitudes to foreign languages and cultures than adults, and as a consequence they are better motivated than adults. In addition, children ‟ s language learning is more intimately incorporated with real communication because it depends more on the direct physical environment than does adult language. And that is truth because an adult is afraid of expressing his opinion on an issue in a foreign language due to his fear that he/she may make a mistake and become embarrassed in the end but children do not realize this and they express freely themselves without worrying about the correct way of saying something. Another point worth mentioning is that children dedicate enormous quantities of time to language learning, compared with adults and they are better for the reason that they do more of it. And finally, learners who start as children achieve a more native like accent than those who start as adolescents or adults. A notable study is that conducted by Oyama in 1976 who investigated 60 male immigrants who had entered the United States at ages ranging from 6 to 20 ~ 16 ~

years and had been resident there for between 5 and 18 years. She asked two adult native speakers to judge the nativeness of the learners ‟ accents in two 45second extracts taken from performance on a reading-aloud task and a free- speech task. Oyama reports a very strong effect for „age of arrival ‟ but almost no effect for „number of years ‟ in the United States. She found that the youngest arrivals performed in the same range as native speaker controls. Other studies which have investigated the effects of age on pronunciation support the younger is better position. Similar results have been obtained for the acquisition of grammar. As Singleton writes: “Concerning the hypothesis that those who begin learning a second language in childhood in the long run generally achieve higher levels of proficiency than those who begin in later life, one can say that there is some good supportive evidence and that there is no actual counter evidence”. As a result we come up with some general conclusions, presented below, which unite the pieces of the puzzle and we get a clearer picture of the role of age in second language: Firstly, only child learners are able of acquiring a native accent in informal learning contexts. Long puts the critical age at 6 years but Scovel argues for a pre-puberty start. Singleton points out those children will only acquire a native accent if they receive vast exposure to the second language. Secondly, children perhaps are more likely to acquire a native grammatical competence. Thirdly, children are more likely to accomplish higher levels of achievement in both pronunciation and grammar than adults. Lastly, the procedure of acquiring second language grammar is not significantly affected by age, but that of acquiring pronunciation definitely is. Furthermore, there are a number of reasons for teaching English at primary level that do not rely simply on the claim that is the best time to learn languages well. Below we list the reasons: ~ 17 ~

1. The necessity to expose children from an early age to an understanding of foreign cultures so that they grow up broadminded and sympathetic to others. 2. The need to connect communication to the understanding of new concepts. 3. The need for maximum learning time for important languages-the earlier you start the more time you get. 4. The advantage of starting with early second language instruction so that later the language can be used as a medium of teaching. Judging from the above conclusions and findings we come up with the view that there is no evidence to suggest that teaching foreign languages to young children actually produces bad results as well as the age factor in language acquisition conclude that an early start does give advantages and certainly does not do any harm; in contrast, it helps children to become familiar with the culture which produced the language, become more open minded and encourages the child to want to learn more and more about the language. But before we summarize and reach any definite conclusion we must go a step further and also examine the disadvantages of starting at a young age. Many people claim that if a child starts a foreign language in his/her early years not only will not benefit from it but also he/she will become confused by the exposure to it. Of course, this point of view is not accurate because in many countries such as Africa and Asia children learn two foreign languages at the same time. In addition, published information on the outcomes of early language learning come from the North American experience with immersion of teaching, where native speakers of English are placed in Frenchspeaking nursery and infant schools and vice versa. Learning a second language through immersion differs from learning a foreign language as a subject lesson numerous times a week .When we talk about immersion we mean that students study at school subjects through second language and therefore have contact ~ 18 ~

and more experience with the language. In such contexts, young learners who have an early start expand and uphold advantages in some areas of language skills. But here we are going to examine the methods used up until now in the language classroom and to show how these methods influence young learners to learn a language. Another important disadvantage, which must be mentioned here, is the lack of appropriate methods used in the language classroom for many years. Approaches designed to promote second language learning in this century have the tendency to reflect many different opinions on how a foreign language is best learned. But before describing the methods, we will define what an approach is and what a method is. When we talk about approaches in the language teaching we mean the theories about the nature of language and language learning that serve as the sources of practices and principles in the language teaching. So, an approach explains how people acquire their knowledge of the language and makes statements about the circumstances which will support successful language learning. And when talking about method refers to the practical realization of an approach. The originators of a method have arrived at decisions about types of activities, roles of teachers and learners, the kinds of material which will be helpful, and some model of syllabus organization. Methods include various procedures and techniques as part of their standard fare. Imagine that you are faced with the following challenge. You must discover the internal structure of a system that contains tens of thousands of units, all generated from a small set of materials. These units, in turn, can be assembled into an infinite number of combinations. Although only a subset of those combinations is correct, the subset itself is for all practical purposes infinite. Somehow you must converge on the structure of this system to use it to communicate. This system is human language. The units are words, the materials are the small set of sounds from which they are constructed, and the ~ 19 ~

combinations are the sentences into which they can be assembled. Given the complexity of this system, it seems improbable that mere children could discover its underlying structure and use it to communicate. ~ 20 ~

Chapter II. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF LEARNING ENGLISH AT AN EARLY AGE 2.1 A practical investigation of young learner’s language learning Developmental studies suggest that children learn more and learn earlier than previously thought. In the arena of language development our studies show that children’s early learning is complex and multifaceted. For example, research shows that young children rely on what has been called “statistical learning,” a form of implicit learning that occurs as children interact in the world, to acquire the language spoken in their culture. However, new data also indicate that children require a social setting and social interaction with another human being to trigger their computations skills to learn from exposure to language. Early language learning is a complex process. Our working process is the following: Infants computational skills, modulated by social interaction, open a window of increased plasticity at about 8 months of life. Between 8 and 10 months monolingual infants show an increase in native language phonetic perception, a decrease in nonnative phonetic perception, and remain open to phonetic learning from a new language that can be induced by social experience with a speaker of that language. The complexity of learning in this early phase is not trivial, and that complexity might explain why our laboratory studies show wide individual differences in the early phonetic transition. An important question, especially for practice, was suggested by these data: Is an individual child’s success at this early transition toward language indicative of future language skills or literacy? We began studies to determine whether the variability observed in measures of early phonetic learning predicted children’s language skills measured at later points in development. We recognized that it was possible that the variability we observed was simply “noise,” in other words, random ~ 21 ~

variation in a child’s skill on the particular day that we measured that child in the laboratory. We were therefore pleased when our first studies demonstrated that infants’ discrimination of two simple vowels at 6 months of age was significantly correlated with their language skills at 13, 16, and 24 months of age. Later studies confirmed the connection between early speech perception and later language skills using both brain and behavioral measures on monolingual infants, and with bilingual infants using brain measures. Other laboratories also produced data that indicated strong links between the speed of speech processing and later language function and between various measures of statistical learning and later language measures Recent data from our laboratory indicate long-term associations between early measures of infants’ phonetic perception and future language and reading skills. The new work measures vowel perception at 7 and 11 months and shows that the trajectory of learning between those two ages predicts the children’s language abilities and pre-literacy skills at the age of 5 years—the association holds regardless of socio-economic status, as well as the level of children’s language skills at 18 and 24 months of age. Infants tested at 7 and 11 months of age show three patterns of speech perception development: (1) infants who show excellent native discrimination at 7 months and maintain that ability at 11 months, the high-high group, (2) infants who show poor abilities at 7 months but excellent performance at 11 months, the low-high group, and (3) infants who show poor abilities to discriminate at both 7 and 11 months of age, the low-low group. We followed these children until the age of 5, assessing language skills at 18 months, 24 months, and 5 years of age. Strong relationships were observed between infants’ early speech perception performance and their later language skills at 18 and 24 months. At 5 years of age, significant relationships were shown between infants’ early speech perception performance and both their language skills and the phonological awareness skills associated with success in learning to read. In all cases, the ~ 22 ~

earlier in development that infants showed excellent skills in detecting phonetic differences in native language sounds, the better their later performance in measures of language and pre-literacy skills. These results are theoretically interesting and also highly relevant to early learning practice. These data show that the initial steps that infants take toward language learning are important to their development of language and literacy years later. Our data suggest as well that these early differences in performance are strongly related to experience. Our studies reveal that these early measures of speech discrimination, which predict future language and literacy, are strongly correlated to experience with “motherese” early in development. Motherese exaggerates the critical acoustic cues in speech, and infants’ social interest in speech is, we believe, important to the social learning process. Thus, talking to children early in life, reading to them early in life, and interacting socially with children around language and literacy activities creates the milieu in which plasticity during the critical period can be maximized for all children. There is increasing evidence that children raised in families with lower socio-economic status (SES) show deficits in language measured either behaviorally or in brain studies. In one of the first studies of 5-year-old children combining behavioral and brain measures, Raizada (2008) examined the associations between standardized test scores of language, social cognition, intelligence and SES as the 5-year-old children worked on a rhyming task. The results showed correlations between SES, language performance, and the degree of hemispheric specialization in Broca’s area. The SES-Broca’s link remained highly significant after the effects of the language scores were removed, indicating the relationship cannot be attributed to both measures’ correlations with the language scores. The study shows a correlational link, which of course we cannot assume to be causal. We assumed that SES is not itself the variable driving these effects on the brain—SES is likely a proxy for the opportunity to learn. We learned in a ~ 23 ~

follow-up study that SES could be removed from the equation if language input itself was measured. The complexity of language input is the more direct factor influencing development of brain areas that code language. When measures of the complexity of maternal language were assessed across the entire sample of children in the study, we observed a correlation with structural measures of the brain in Broca’s area. These measures indicated that greater grey matter in the left hemisphere language areas was related to the complexity of maternal language in conversations between the mothers and their 5-year-old children. In summary, our results suggested that language input to the child—its complexity and diversity—was the factor affecting brain development in the language areas, not SES. The implication is that children’s brains literally depend on input for development. Though these results are correlational, we believe that the connection between experience with language and brain development is potentially causal and that further research will allow us to develop causal explanations. There are two important implications of these data. The first is that early language learning is highly social. Children do not compute statistics indiscriminately. Social cues “gate” what and when children learn from language input. Machines are not sufficient as instructors, at least in the early period and when standard machines like television sets are used as the instructor. Further studies are needed to test whether our work suggesting that language learning must be social to “stick” applies to other learning domains— must cognitive learning or learning about numbers be social? Studies will also be needed to determine the ages at which the social context conclusion applies—infants are predisposed to attend to people and do not learn from TVs, but that conclusion does not apply to older children, teenagers, or adult learners. What is it about social learning that is so important to the young? Animal models show that neurosteroids modulate brain activity during social interactions and previous work has shown that social interaction ~ 24 ~

can extend the “critical period” for learning in birds. Social factors play a role in learning throughout life. The prevalence, across age, of new social technologies (text messaging, Facebook, Twitter) indicates a strong human drive for social communication. Technology used for teaching is increasingly embodying the principles of social interaction to enhance student learning. A true understanding of the nature of the relationship between social interaction and learning requires more research, and the NSF-funded LIFE Center is focused on this question across domains and ages. The fact that young children use implicit and automatic mechanisms to learn and that children’s brains are influenced by the ambient information they experience is a sobering thought. Opportunities for learning of the right kind must be available for children to maximize the unique learning abilities that their brains permit during the early period of life. Scientists of course do not yet know how much or what kinds of experience are necessary for learning—we cannot write an exact prescription for success. Nonetheless, the data on language and literacy indicate a potent and necessary role for ample early experience, in social settings, in which complex language is used to encourage children to express themselves and explore the world of books. Further data will refine these conclusions and, hopefully, allow us to develop concrete recommendations that will enhance the probability that all children the world over maximize their brain development and learning. 2.2 Advantages of early language learning There are some advantages that bilingual children have when they learn English as a foreign or second language. A remarkable advantage is that bilingualism trains children to focus their attention on the relevant variables in the context, particularly information that is ambiguous or contradictory. Increased cognitive abilities may help children to develop the necessary skills that are thought to be involved in effective communication. For example, knowing two words that name the same concept like: “nice and great” could ~ 25 ~

help children develop the understanding that an object or event can be represented in more than one way, which could support children’s understanding of other people’s perspectives. "Research has shown that after 10 or 12 years old the brain handles language differently because until then it is constantly making neurological connections. As children we process language in the frontal lobe of the brain. But if we learn a language as a teenager or adult, the brain has to 'scramble' to find storage space somewhere else. So in simple terms, learning languages as a child the brain absorbs them readily, after that it requires much harder work.” The first advantage of learning another language as a child has been shown to enhance cultural understanding because children are expose to other culture. Masayo Yamamoto (2001) in his book “Language Use in Interlingual Families” says that “bilingualism is useful to cross cultural understanding”. So, being able to speak to people from different countries and cultures exposes the child to different ways of thinking. This is supported by Anwei Feng in her book Bilingual Education (2007) that says “bilingual education may be the best way to truly improve students´ communicative competence. Bilingual education aims to teach language use and to enable students to learn another system of cultures and way of thinking”. As a result, culture becomes a tool for children to learn early the language, and ways to communicate him/her-self. In addition, many studies have been carried out to determine the impact of bilingual up- bringing on thinking capabilities and the interesting result is that bilingual children think more flexibly. The second advantage of learning a new language is that it helps kids to build new relationships. Communication is a core part of human relationships. So, while young children certainly find and use many forms of non-verbal communication to interact and play with each other, language is a key enabler to new friendships. According to Silke Rehman (2010) in her book “Make your Child Multilingual” she says that “Bilingual children build bridges to new ~ 26 ~

relationships because they have the capability: they can talk to diverse people, they build different sorts of relationships, and they can be the bridge between two kids who can't talk to each other, they can actually translate and help out”. That means, speaking the language of those around you is the bridge to connecting with them. Bilingual children not only act as a language or culture bridge, they also become very aware of their special gift. This consciousness transfers into their self-image and forms part of their self-identity, part of how they see themselves and how they define who they are. According to Silke Rehman (2010) “bilingualism creates confident and makes children found their identities and that improves their self steam”. A third advantage of learning a new language is the improvement of self – esteem and self – confidence on them (bilingual kids). Knowing more than one language helps your child to adapt easily to different language environments thereby increasing his/her self-esteem and self-confidence. According to Edith Harding-Esch and Philip Riley (in the book The Bilingual Family: A Handbook for Parents) “Bilingualism provides access and exposure to various cultures all over the world. They can enjoy the treasure of idioms, history music, folk stories, literature and poetry in various cultures”. Different people will judge them differently. However, the combination of them all points to the most important advantage overall: becoming bilingual involves the whole child, not just his/her language but also their socio-emotional, cognitive and cultural aspects. Becoming bilingual defines the identity of a child, his sense of security and status, his/her self-esteem and self-image and it boosts a child's selfconfidence. Another advantage of bilingual kids is that they have potential economic advantages. According to Li Wei (in his book The Bilingualism Reader) “A person with two languages may have a wider portfolio of jobs available. As economic trade barriers fall, as international relationship become closer, as union as partnerships across nations become more widespread an increasing ~ 27 ~

numbers of jobs are likely to require a person to be bilingual or multilingual”. That means that Knowing languages is a real asset when it comes to employment opportunities. So, it turns into an economic benefit or income to bilingual individuals. It is not a secret that multilingual people will always have a wider range of career options. With the increasing globalization this is the reality now more than ever, and language knowledge will continue to gain more and more importance every day. Almost every sector is nowadays looking for people that are able to communicate in more than one language; just as an example in the following pages are looking for bilinguals www.bilingual-jobs.com, http://www.hr.gov.nt.ca, Idealist.org, Careerbuilder.com, SpanishJobs.com, and some others in different countries around the world. Many professions today require the command of a second or third language and those who master them, are certainly at an advantage over those who don't. There are also advantages in socio-cognitive development in bilingual kids. Socio-cognitive development refers to how children change with age in terms of their abilities to think about social and communicative issues. Silke Rehman (2010). Elena Nicoladis (in her book Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development) says that “the differences are that Bilingual children achieve higher scores than monolinguals on a number of tests of cognitive ability, including mental flexibility, non-verbal problem-solving tasks, understanding the conventional origin of names, distinguishing between semantic similarity and phonetic similarity and capacity to judge the grammaticality of sentences;” that means bilinguals have the advantages to be more reasonably than monolinguals. They become more flexible at the time they are thinking, and they tend to solve problems easily and understand words by associating them to others. A last advantage to be mentioned here is that kids obtain a better Socioemotional development. According to Huitt, W. (2008) Socio-emotional ~ 28 ~

development refers to how children change with age in terms of their processing of emotions in a social and communicative setting. Silke Rehman (2010) refers to Communication as: a core part of human relationships and while young children certainly find and use many forms of non-verbal communication to interact and play with each other, language is a key enabler to new friendships. Speaking the language of those around you is the bridge to connecting with them”. She expresses that communication is an essential part of the human life that is why bilingualism becomes important because it creates bridges to share with kids from different cultures. Clearly, bilingualism is an interchange of emotions and communication in childhood. 2.3 Disadvantages of early language learning There are some disadvantages that bilingual children have when they are learning English as a foreign language which are the following: the context in which the language is learned, if kids are in touch with the language since they are born, they may start speaking three to six months later; than those who are raise in a monolingual environment, children will temporally mix languages, additional effort from parents and children to encourage each other to learn the foreign language is needed. Silke Rheman (2010). Those disadvantages fortunately appear at the early process of learning the language. But, the good news is that these disadvantages are not permanent on most of the children; they can be enhanced within the process of learning the foreign language. One of the most remarkable disadvantages that children have at the moment of being enrolled in a foreign language learning process since they are born is that they might start speaking three to six months later. Rehman says that “You can expect your bilingual child to begin speaking about 3-6 months later than his/her monolingual peers”. Monolingual children are expected to say their first 8-10 words around the age of 18 months and their first 2 word sentences around the age of 2 years. Also she recommends that “if monolingual children don´t talk in the first 6 months, they have to go and ask a doctor”. On the other hand, ~ 29 ~

if bilingual kids do not start speaking after the extra six months there must be language confusion or a medical factor that is blocking the learning process. Another significant disadvantage of learning a foreign language at an early age is that children will temporarily mix languages. Rehman states that “It is normal for bi-/multilingual children to mix up languages until about the age of 4. If children are lacking the right word in language A, they will borrow it from language B to communicate their message”. It means that they may temporally mix the languages affecting the way they interact or communicate their ideas or messages to others. In addition, there are a number of variables that can affect the outcome of bilingual development, including the context in which the languages are learned. The context or environment plays an important role within the children learning process. Moreover, children should use every resource within his/her environment as a tool to take advantage of it and learn the language easily. Parents (family) and school are the most important sources within the children context to become a bilingual kid with success. Nevertheless, there are a numbers of factors at school and at home that block the process of learning a foreign language such as: unsuccessful Attempt at Integration into Society, unavailability of Teachers, lack of classrooms, parents and teachers fluency into the foreign language, among others. Unsuccessful Attempt at Integration into Society is one of the biggest problems associated to bilingual education in the United States. According to Aparna Iyer “Bilingual education was deemed necessary since it was supposed to help integrate the children of immigrants and minorities into society. The system of bilingual education demanded separate teachers and classrooms and believed in gradual integration into society by allowing children to receive education in their native language for a period of 3 or more years”. This fact can switch from an advantage to a disadvantage because immigrants’ children have ~ 30 ~

the opportunity to receive classes in their native language but, the process of becoming bilingual receives a negative impact making the process itself slowly. Another factor that blocks the bilingual learning process on kids is unavailability of teachers in schools. Most of the countries in Central America have limited budgets to invest in a full bilingual education in public schools. El Salvador is not excluded from this situation. In El Salvador, public schools count only with one English teacher for the entire mass of active students. Moreover, some teachers are not assigned in their respective area of specialization. For example, an English teacher is assigned to teach science or another subject or vice versa. Consequently, kids are not getting enough English instruction to get proficient in the foreign language. It means that public schools are not interested in their students becoming bilingual; this represents a noticeable disadvantage. According to Aparna Lyer “Bilingual education requires a number of trained teachers who are proficient in both English and their native language, assuming that Spanish is one of the mediums of instruction”. Bilingual education is also affected by lack of classrooms. From the point of view that a foreign language education is more effective if classes are divided into levels (basic, intermediate, advance.) the lack of classrooms represents one of the hugest problems into public and private education. In El Salvador, Schools in general have students from different levels of English and it is difficult for the authorities of the schools divide them into their respective level because of the lack of classrooms. For that reason, students receive a single class covering a curriculum or topics that are not adjusted to their needs or level. According to Aparna Lyer “There is a deficiency of classrooms that can accommodate students who require instructions in both English and their native language (Spanish). Students are expected to sit together in one class regardless of their age and the variations in the required level of education. This poses a ~ 31 ~

great problem for teachers who, in addition to being well versed in two languages, have to exhibit a certain level of comfort in handling different levels of education simultaneously”. Due to this, disadvantages or blocking factors appear again in the context of children becoming bilingual. A last disadvantage is that bilingual kids will have to handle with the added academic load that represents learning to read and to write in another language on top of the first; that means double efforts for them. If parents want children not only to speak another language but read and write it, too, they will have to provide extra tuition beyond the regular school days. According to Silke Rehman “There's additional effort for organizing language courses, there's money and time you might need to put in. But all parents would agree that the benefits are well worth the effort”. However, for children an added academic load or extra tuition becomes bored and stressful. So, they prefer to get involved in another type of activities like practicing sports among others and because of that reason they decide to quit their bilingual education. Advantages and disadvantages could be less or more depending on age that the second language is acquired: Deborah Weiss and James J. Dempsey explain that bilinguals perform better in their first language than in their second language in quiet and in noise. But, In January 2008 the “Journal of the American Academy of Audiology” made a research based on 25 proficient and language competent, bilingual speakers in which the people who participated were divided in two groups. One group with kids and another group with adolescents; the research showed that the groups which learned both languages in early years were able to express their ideas easier than the other group which was shaped by adolescents. That means that learning another language in early stages creates more opportunities to express ideas and to communicate easily despite of the disadvantages mentioned above. ~ 32 ~

Conclusion To generalize all the information mentioned above, we can just claim the following fact that English language should be more than one course and it can be used as a scientific language and other training courses. For example, science courses, history, social or biology should be taught in English. In this way, power and speed of learning the language significantly increases. Primary school and children is the best course to learn the language. Because learning the language with native language in the first decade of life provides for disabled students to independently and directs language without translation, interpretation and changes its meaning from Uzbek to learn English in your mind. This means that the person will be able to speak like native language without including Uzbek to English in your mind . Early childhood is the best time for language acquisition. Ease of learning a foreign language diminishes with age. Between birth and adolescence the brain is hard-wired to acquire language naturally. As child approaches puberty, the nature of language learning and storage changes, becoming less flexible. Many experts believe that learning the language before the age of ten years allow children to speak correct and fluent as an indigenous person. Therefore, whatever the earlier children become familiar with foreign language, he have better chance to speak proficiency. On the other hand language learning, except native language, can provide develop a lifelong ability to more communicate with others. Besides, learning a new language at any age is an enormously rewarding experience in many ways. While language learning is an enriching experience for all ages, children have the most to gain from this wonderful adventure. Quite simply, starting early offers the widest possible set of benefits and opportunities. Children understand intuitively that language is something to explore, to play around with, and to enjoy. Their enthusiasm is both infectious and effective. The quickness with which they pick up their first language is nearly ~ 33 ~

miraculous and such a joy to watch as a parent. As children grow, all parents can attest to how much fun their children continue to have as they sing new words they hear and even invent new ones with a huge, bright smile. ~ 34 ~

Bigger view of the world : Traveling abroad is an experience which can benefit anymore, offering not just new sites to see, but new frames of mind and new perspectives. but going abroad and feeling comfortable in the language of your destination means you’re doing more than just travelling- going from your home to another place, and then back home. You can feel as if you’re part of the culture and the life of this new world, as if you aren’t a total stranger just visiting. 8. Greater grasp of one’s first language- including a bigger, richer vocabulary : Most of the time we use our first language with little thought to grammatical rules or constructions. this is perfectly natural, but the experience of learning a new language can bring greater understanding and perhaps even better grammar to our first language. 9. Building and keeping cultural connections : Some of us are lucky enough to have a relative who still speaks their mother tongue frequently. To be able to communicate with them in that language builds a bridge- not only to that person, but to the heritage and history they represent. 10. An all-family activity : Modern life is hectic; its demands are frequent and often contradictory. Learning a language together as a family provides a unifying activity which doesn’t require you to drive your kids anywhere, and doesn’t make it necessary to be in ten places at once. ~ 36 ~
