language learning system”. 1 It is noted that in the framework of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Programme for Training in the country, a comprehensive foreign languages’ teaching system, aimed at creating harmoniously developed, highly educated, modern-thinking young generation, further integration of the country to the world community, has been created. During the years of independence, over 51.7 thousand teachers of foreign languages graduated from universities, English, German and French multimedia tutorials and textbooks for 5-9 grades of secondary schools, electronic resources for learning English in primary schools were created, more than 5000 secondary schools, professional colleges and academic lyceums were equipped with language laboratories.However, analysis of the current system of organizing language learning shows that learning standards, curricula and textbooks do not fully meet the current requirements, particularly in the use of advanced in formation and media technologies. Education is mainly conducted in traditional methods. Further development of a continuum of foreign languages learning at all levels of education; improving skills of teachers and provision of modern teaching materials are required. According to the decree, starting from 2013/2014 school year foreign languages, mainly English, gradually throughout the country will be taught from the first of schooling in the form of lesson-games and speaking games, continuing to learning the alphabet, reading and spelling in the second year (grade). Also it is envisaged that university modules, especially in technical and international areas, will be offered in English and other foreign languages at higher education institutions. The State Testing Centre, along with other relevant agencies, is tasked with preparing draft proposals on introducing foreign languages testing to the entrance examinations for all higher educational institutions. 1 “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system” Xalq so’zi December 10, 2012. 3

In order to increase teaching standards in distant rural areas, the higher educational institutions are allowed targeted admission of people living in distant areas to foreign language programs on the condition that they will oblige themselves to work in the acquired specialty at their residence area for at least 5 years after graduation. The decree also envisages 30% salary increase for foreign language teachers in rural areas, 15% increase for those in other areas. Actuality of the theme. English literature is one of the important component parts of the world literature. Its representations contributed to the literature with their works. The theme of qualification paper deals with literary activity of well-known English sonneteer W.Shakespeare and his sonnets. Shakespeare sonnets are very effective tool in learning the history of English literature and also foreign language. Besides it plays an important role in educating of young generation. The actuality of the qualification work lies in the study of famous Renaissance poet’s literary heritage,his sonnets and his contribution to the English especially world literature.Shakespeare’s sonnets are the monument of a remarkable genious but they are also the monuments of remarkable age.Shakespeare’s sonnets are intensely personal and are records of his hopes and fears,love and friendships,infatuations and disillusions that in turn acquare a universal quality through their intensity.Since these early beginnings,Shakespeare’s sonnets have held a significant place in literature for both its unique form and presentation of content. Investigation of the problem. The problem was investigated by many literary critics.English scholars Stephen Booth, Lars Engle, A.S.Bradley and others,German scholars George Gottfried Gervinus,Russian scholars Samuel Marshak,Boris Pasternak,A.Stepanov,Uzbek scholars Jamol Kamol,A’zam Obidov,Yusuf Shomansur and others. 4

The aim and tasks of the qualification paper. The aim of the work is to present the overview of Shakespeare’s sonnets.The following tasks have been settled so that to achieve this aim: - To show William Shakespeare’s as a great poet, his poetic world -To investigate the ties between the author’s own life and relationships of his life to the sonnets -To study literary activity of a famous English sonneteer and playwright W.Shakespeare, analyses his sonnets. To achieve this aim some sonnets of the poet are studied. The object of the qualification paper is Shakespearean Sonnets. The subject matter of the work is different approaches about Shakespeare’s life and his creative activity. Methods of research. Comparative and stylistic methods have been used in this qualification paper. The Metodological basis of the work is based on a decree of the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov which was signed on December 10,2012 “ On measures to further improvement of the system of studying of foreign languages” and The Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and the National Program for Cadres Training. According to this decree foreign languages,especially English language will be taught from the first school year.It means that English language increases from year to year in our country, not only young generation also old people study English nowadays. Theoretical basis of this work is considered the works of English scholars which belong to the theme, Helen Vendler, Stephen Booth, Lars Engle and works on translation Shakespeare’s Sonnets by Uzbek and Russian scholars S.Marshak, Jamol Kamol, A’zam Obidov, Yusuf Shomansur, and also the scientific literatures on the history of English literature. 5

Scientific novelty of the work. We investigated W.Shakespeare as a sonneteer,his career as a sonneteer is very popular. The following results of the theme shows its scientific novelty: there has been found difference between Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnets,there has been investigated the usage of Latinity and describing as an opposition between colors,a contrast between the fairness of the young man and the blackness of the dark lady in Shakespeare’s sonnets. Theoretical and practical value of the work. The result of the qualification paper can be used as a necessary while studying the pecularities of Shakespeare’s Sonnets and during a comparative analysis of texts in Old English and Modern English.In this qualification paper we have given an important and theoretical information about Shakespeare’s Sonnets. The results achieved at the investigation have a practical value at lectures and also seminars dedicated to Shakespeare’s sonnets and also his creative activity,tool for the readers who are interested in his works. It can help students to know about the history of English letters. It can help students to study vocabulary and grammar of the language as well. Construction of the qualification paper. It consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of literature. Introduction deals with the description of the structure of the qualification paper. The first chapter entitled W. Shakespeare’s life and career. This chapter includes three paragraphs. In the first paragraph we have given information about Renaissance period in which the poet lived and created his works. In the second paragraph we have given information about the life of the writer. In the third paragraph we have given information about his creative activity as a dramatist. The second chapter entitled Shakespeare’s literary as a sonneteer. This chapter consists of four paragraphs. In the first paragraph of this chapter we wrote about Shakespeare and the essence of 6

verse and also the difference between Petrarchan and Shakespearean Sonnets. In the second chapter we have given information about the use of Latinity and expressing of desire in Shakespeare’s sonnets. In the third of paragraph we wrote about the use of literary devices in Shakespeare’s Sonnets. In the last paragraph we have given information about flesh colors, an opposition between colors, a contrast between the fairness of the young man and the blackness of the dark lady in Shakespeare’s sonnets. In the conclusion the results of the qualification paper are generalized. In Bibliography we gave the list of used literature. Total amount of the work is 67 pages. 7

CHAPTER I W.Shakespeare’s life and career This chapter aimed at studying W.Shakespeare’s autobiography and literary career. This chapter begins with the general characteristics of English literature at the end of XVI t h and the beginning of XVII t h century, the period in which the writer lived and created his works. Shakespeare lived in the Renaissance period. It was a cultural artistic movement in England. XVI t h century marks the flowering of the renaissance. Major representatives of renaissance period are the following Francis Bacon, John Donne,Thomas More,Shakespeare and others.A poet and playwright William Shakespeare is the favorite author of millions of readers all over the world. No other writer's plays have been produced so often and read so widely in so many different countries. He had a greater influence on the world literature than any other author. 2 Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the XVI th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the XIX th century. In the XX th century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. 1.1. The Renaissance period in English literature The English Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement in England dating from the late XV t h to the early XVII t h century 3 . It is associated with the pan – European renaissance that is usually regarded as beginning in Italy in the late XIV t h century.Like most of northern Europe, England saw little of these developments until more than a century later. The beginning of the English Renaissance is often taken, as a convenience, to be 1485, when the Battle of Bosworth Field ended the wars of the Roses and inaugurated the Tudor Dynasty. Renaissance style and ideas, however, were slow to penetrate England, were slow to penetrate England and the Elizabethan era in the second half of the XVI t h century is usually regarded as the height of the English Renaissance. England had a strong tradition of literature in the English vernacular, which gradually increased as English use of the printing press became common by the mid XVI t h century. By the time of Elizabethan literature a vigorous literary culture in both drama and poetry included poets such as Edmund Spenser whose verse epic the Faerie Queene had a strong influence on English literature but was eventually overshadowed by the lyrics of William Shakespeare Thomas Wyatt and others.The English poetry was exactly at the right stage of development for this transplantation to occur, since forms such as the sonnet were uniquely adapted to setting as madrigals: indeed, the sonnet was already well developed in Italy. Composers such as Thomas Morley, the only contemporary composer to set Shakespeare and whose work survives. The major literary figures in the English Renaissance include Francis Bacon, John Donne, Ben Johnson, Thomas More, William Shakespeare and others. Renaissance was a great cultural movement that began in Italy during the early 1330's. other countries in the late 1400's and ended early in the XVII th century.The word "Renaissance" comes from the Latin word "rinascere" and means rebirth. The Renaissance was the period when European culture was at its height. At that time great importance was assigned to intellect, experience, scientific researches. The new ideology proclaimed the value of human individuality. This new outlook was called Humanism. The humanists were scholars and artists who studied subjects that they believed would help them better understand the problems of humanity. These subjects included literature and philosophy. The humanists considered that the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome had excelled in such subjects and could serve as models. During the Middle Ages the most important branch of learning was theology. Renaissance thinkers paid greater attention to the study of humanity. During the Renaissance period (particularly 1485-1603) Middle English began to develop into Modern English. By the late 1500's the English people were speaking and writing English in a form much like that used today. The Renaissance in England is usually studied by dividing it into three parts: the rise of the Renaissance under the early Tudor monarchs (1500-1558), the height of the Renaissance under Elizabeth 1 (1558-1603), and the decline of the Renaissance under the Stuart monarchs (1603-1649). 4 The invention of printing press and improved methods of manufacturing paper made possible the rapid spread of knowledge. In 1476, during the Wars of the Roses, William Caxton set up the first printing press in London. Before that time, books and other literary works were slowly and laboriously copied by hand. Printing made it possible to produce far more books at lower costs. By 1640 Caxton's and other presses had printed more than 216,000 different works and editions. It is estimated that by 1530 more than half the population of England was literate. Learning at that time flourished not only at Oxford and Cambridge, but at the lower educational levels too. 4 Muratova E,Ochilova. English literature Tashkent 2006.p.195 10

At that period new types of literature were imported from the European continent. Chief among these were the sonnet, imported by Wyatt and Surrey from Italy, where it had been perfected by Francis Petrarch; and the essay, imported by Sir Francis Bacon from France. Other verse forms were also borrowed from Italian and French. The native drama continued to develop and gain popularity. Under the reign of Elizabeth I (1558- 1603), order was restored, and England entered upon her most glorious age. Elizabeth was only twenty-five when she assumed the throne, never married, and ruled wisely and well for forty-five years. Interested in education, Queen Elizabeth established one hundred free grammar schools in all parts of the country. These schools were open to both sexes of all ranks. In 1579, Gresham College was founded in London to cater to the needs of the middle class. Unlike the classical curriculum offered by Oxford and Cambridge, its curriculum included law, medicine and other practical courses. As the children of the middle class grew better educated, the middle class itself grew in power. During Elizabeth's reign, England began to gain supremacy on the seas. The Elizabethan Age is the age of poetry. Except perhaps for the essayist Francis Bacon and the critic Christopher Marlowe, people were not yet writing prose of literary quality. Some Elizabethan writers dealt exclusively in lyric poetry, but many were also playwrights writing their plays in verse. The Elizabethan period was the golden age of English drama. In 1576, James Burbage built England's first playhouse, called theatre, in a suburb of London. Until this time, drama had been performed in the streets, at homes and palaces, and at English universities. After Burbage built The Theatre, other playhouses were constructed, which rapidly increased the popularity of drama. A group of leading Elizabethan playwrights was known as the "University Wits" because they had attended the famous English universities at Oxford and Cambridge. These playwrights included Robert Greene, Christopher Marlowe, and George Peele. Marlowe was the most important dramatist among the Wits. William Shakespeare, 11

Ben Jonson and other more than a dozen first-rate playwrights also created their skillful dramas at that period. Blank verse, introduced into the language by Surrey, became the main form for writing tragedies and comedies. In 1600, when the new century began, Elizabeth was an aging queen not in the best of health. She was childless. After her death, in 1603, King James of Scotland, the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, became the king of England. The Decline of the Renaissance. James I, the first Stuart king, had little first-hand knowledge of England. Elizabeth had managed to maintain religious balance between Protestants and Catholics, but under the Stuarts that balance was lost. Religious and political unrest was growing. At that period a number of young Cavaliers, loyal to the king, wrote about love and loyalty, but even in the love poems it was evident that the freshness of the Elizabethan era had passed. Among the best of these poets were Richard Lovelace and Robert Herrick. Drama continued to flourish in England under the Stuarts. Shakespeare's great tragedies were written during the reign of King James, and Shakespeare's acting company, taken under the patronage of the king, became known as the King's Men. The theatre in fact remained a popular form of entertainment until the puritan government closed all playhouses in 1649. The greatest of the Puritan poets, and one of the greatest English poets was John Milton, Latin secretary to the Puritan Commonwealth. While in this position his sight began to fail ;eventually he became blind. He composed "Paradise Lost", his greatest work and the most successful English epic, sightless. Three chief forms of poetry flourished during the Elizabethan Age. They were the lyric, the sonnet, and narrative poetry. The lyric is a short poem that expresses a poet's personal emotions and thoughts in a songlike style. The sonnet is a 14-line poem with a certain pattern of rhyme and rhythm. Elizabethan poets wrote two types of sonnets, the Italian sonnet and the English sonnet. The two types differed in the arrangement of the rhymes. Sir Thomas Wyatt introduced the sonnet from Italy into English literature in the 12

early 1500's. William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser wrote sonnet sequences. A sonnet sequence is a group of sonnets based on a single theme or about one person. Narrative poetry. A narrative poem tells a story. Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis" and Spenser's "The Faerie Queene" are the examples of narrative poetry. 1.2. The General facts of writer’s life William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon” 5 His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays,154 sonnets and a few other verses, of which the authorship of some uncertain William Shakespeare was the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glover and alderman originally from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptised there on 26 April 1564. His actual birthdate remains unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23 April, St George's Day. This date, which can be traced back to an XVIII th century scholar's mistake, has proved appealing to biographers, since Shakespeare died 23 April 1616. He was the third child of eight and the eldest surviving son. Although no attendance records for the period survive, most biographers agree that Shakespeare was probably educated at the King's New School in Stratford,a free school chartered in 1553,about a quarter-mile from his home. Grammar schools varied in quality during the Elizabethan era, but the curriculum was dictated by law throughout England,and the school would have provided an intensive education in Latin grammar and the classics. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married the 26-year-old Anne Hathaway. The consistory court of the Diocese of Worcester issued a marriage licence 27 November 1582. The next day two of Hathaway's neighbours posted bonds guaranteeing that no lawful claims impeded the marriage. The ceremony may have been arranged in some haste, since the Worcester chancellor allowed the marriage banns to be read once instead of the usual three times, and six months after the marriage Anne gave birth to a daughter, Susanna, baptised 26 May 1583.Twins, son Hamnet and daughter Judith, followed almost two years later and were 5 Dobson M.The making of the national poet Oxford.England 1992,185-86 14

baptised 2 February 1585.Hamnet died of unknown causes at the age of 11 and was buried 11 August 1596. After the birth of the twins, Shakespeare left few historical traces until he is mentioned as part of the London theatre scene in 1592, and scholars refer to the years between 1585 and 1592 as Shakespeare's "lost years".Biographers attempting to account for this period have reported many apocryphal stories. According to professor Nicholas Roweview-point,Shakespeare’s first biographer, recounted a Stratford legend that Shakespeare fled the town for London to escape prosecution for deer poaching in the estate of local squire Thomas Lucy. Shakespeare is also supposed to taken his revenge on Lucy by writing a scurrilous ballad about him.Another XVIII th century story has Shakespeare starting his theatrical career minding the horses of theatre patrons in London.John Aubrey reported that Shakespeare had been a country schoolmaster. Some XX th century scholars have suggested that Shakespeare may have been employed as a schoolmaster by Alexander Hoghton of Lancashire, a Catholic landowner who named a certain "William Shakeshafte" in his will.No evidence substantiates such stories other than hearsay collected after his death, and Shakeshafte was a common name in the Lancashire area. Scholars differ on the exact meaning of these words, but most agree that Greene is accusing Shakespeare of reaching above his rank in trying to match university- educated writers such as Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Nashe and Greene himself (the "university wits"). The italicised phrase parodying the line "Oh, tiger's heart wrapped in a woman's hide" from Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 3, along with the pun "Shake-scene", identifies Shakespeare as Greene's target. Here Johannes Factotum—"Jack of all trades"— means a second-rate tinkerer with the work of others, rather than the more common "universal genius". Greene's attack is the earliest surviving mention of Shakespeare’s career in the theatre. Biographers suggest that his career may have begun any time from the mid-1580s to just before Greene's remarks. From 1594, Shakespeare's plays were performed only by the 15

Lord Chamberlain's Men, a company owned by a group of players, including Shakespeare, that soon became the leading playing company in London. After the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603, the company was awarded a royal patent by the new king, James I, and changed its name to the King's Men. In 1599, a partnership of company members built their own theatre on the south bank of the River Thames, which they called the Globe. In 1608, the partnership also took over the Blackfriars indoor theatre. Records of Shakespeare's property purchases and investments indicate that the company made him a wealthy man. In 1597, he bought the second-largest house in Stratford, New Place, and in 1605, he invested in a share of the parish tithes in Stratford. Some of Shakespeare's plays were published in quarto editions from 1594. By 1598, his name had become a selling point and began to appear on the title pages.Shakespeare continued to act in his own and other plays after his success as a playwright. The 1616 edition of Ben Jonson's Works names him on the cast lists for Every Man in His Humour (1598) and Sejanus His Fall (1603).The absence of his name from the 1605 cast list for Jonson’s Volpone is taken by some scholars as a sign that his acting career was nearing its end.The First Folio of 1623, however, lists Shakespeare as one of "the Principal Actors in all these Plays", some of which were first staged after Volpone, although we cannot know for certain which roles he played.In 1610, John Davies of Hereford wrote that "good Will" played "kingly" roles. In 1709, Rowe passed down a tradition that Shakespeare played the ghost of Hamlet's father. Later traditions maintain that he also played Adam in As You Like It and the Chorus in Henry V, though scholars doubt the sources of the information. 6 Shakespeare divided his time between London and Stratford during his career. company constructed the Globe Theatre there. By 1604, he had moved north of the river again, to an area north of St Paul's Cathedral with many fine houses. There he rented rooms from a French Huguenot called Christopher Mountjoy, a maker of ladies' wigs and other headgear. Rowe was the first biographer to pass down the tradition that Shakespeare retired to Stratford some years before his death; but retirement from all work was uncommon at that time, and Shakespeare continued to visit London.In 1612 he was called as a witness in a court case concerning the marriage settlement of Mountjoy's daughter, Mary. In March 1613 he bought a gatehouse in the former Blackfriars priory; and from November 1614 he was in London for several weeks with his son-in-law, John Hall. After 1606–1607, Shakespeare wrote fewer plays, and none are attributed to him after 1613.His last three plays were collaborations, probably with John Fletcher, who succeeded him as the house playwright for the King’s Men. Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616 and was survived by his wife and two daughters. Susanna had married a physician, John Hall, in 1607, and Judith had married Thomas Quiney, a vintner, two months before Shakespeare’s death. In his will, Shakespeare left the bulk of his large estate to his elder daughter Susanna. The terms instructed that she pass it down intact to "the first son of her body".The Quineys had three children, all of whom died without marrying.The Halls had one child, Elizabeth, who married twice but died without children in 1670, ending Shakespeare’s direct line.Shakespeare's will scarcely mentions his wife, Anne, who was probably entitled to one third of his estate automatically. He did make a point, however, of leaving her "my second best bed", a bequest that has led to much speculation.Some scholars see the bequest as an insult to Anne, whereas others believe that the second-best bed would have been the matrimonial bed and therefore rich in significance. Sometime before 1623, a funerary monument was erected in his memory on the north wall, with a half-effigy of him in the act of writing. Its plaque compares him to Nestor, Socrates, and Virgil. In 1623, in conjunction with the publication of the First Folio, the Droeshout engraving was published. Shakespeare has been commemorated in many statues and memorials around the world, including funeral monuments in Southwark Cathedral and Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. 1.3. Shakespeare changed the nature of drama in England. Arriving in London in the last decade of the sixteenth century, Shakespeare began his play writing career by adapting the forms of already – successful plays, plays about historical characters (both English and Roman), the Senecan “Tragedy of Blood”, Romantic Comedy and plots centering on the Machiavellian villain. From the very first, however, Shakespeare transformed everything he touched: characters developed from the elementary stock characters of earlier traditions – such as the young Hero and Heroine, the stern Father and the Tyrannical Ruler who must be overthrown – into recognizable human beings. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts…” 7 It is not known exactly when Shakespeare began writing, but contemporary allusions and records of performances show that several of his plays were on the London stage by 1592. Some of Shakespeare’s plays were published in quarto editions from had become a selling point and began to appear on the title pages. Most playwrights of the period typically collaborated with others at some point and critics agree that Shakespeare did the same, mostly early and late in his career. The first recorded works of Shakespeare are Richard II and the three parts of Henry VI written in the early 1590 s during a vogue for historical drama Shakespeare’s plays are difficult to date, however and studies of the texts suggest that Titus Andronicus, the Comedy of Error The Taming of the Shrew and the Two gentlemen of Verona may also belong to Shakespeare’s earliest period. Shakespeare’s early classical and Italianate comedic, containing tight double plots and precise comic sequence, give way in the mid 1590 s to the romantic atmosphere of his most acclaimed comedies. A midsummer Night’s Dream is a witty mixture of romance, fairy magic and comic lowlife scene. Shakespeare’s next comedy, the equally romantic Merchant of Venice, contains a portrayal of the vengeful Jewish moneylender Shylock, which reflects Elizabethan views but may appear derogatory to modern audiences. In the early XVII t h century, Shakespeare wrote the so-called “problem plays” Measure for Measure, Troilus and Cressida, and All’s well that ends well and a number of his best known tragedies. Many critics believe that Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies represent the peak of his art. They are Hamlet, Othello King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra. In his final period, Shakespeare turned to romance or tragicomedy and completed three more major plays: Cymbeline, The winter’s Tale and the Tempest, as well as the collaborations, Pericles, Prince of Tyre. Shakespeare's contemporaries first admired him for his long narrative poems "Venus and Adonis" (1593) and "The Rape of Lucrece"(1594). In 1599 the best-known of Elizabethan theatres, the Globe, was built and Shakespeare became a leading shareholder and the principal playwright to the theatre company. He was also an actor, but not a first-rate one: the parts he played were the old servant Adam in "As You like It" and the Ghost in "Hamlet". In 1613, after the Globe had been destroyed by fire during a performance of "Henry VIII" he retired and stopped writing. By then he was very ill. He died on April 23, 1616 and was buried in the Holy Trinity church in Stratford where he was christened. Although some of Shakespeare's plays were published during his life-time, not until his death was any attempt made to collect them in a single volume. 20

The first edition of Shakespeare's collected plays appeared in 1623. Shakespeare's works are truly immortal, and will retain their immortality as long as the human race exists. He is a true classic; every new generation finds something new and unperceived in his works. His popularity all over the world grows from year to year. More than four hundred years after his birth the plays of Shakespeare are performed even more often than they were during his lifetime. They are performed on the stage, in the movies, and on television. They are read by millions of people all over the world. Shakespeare's Plays. Most scholars agree that there exists 38 plays written by Shakespeare. Traditionally, Shakespeare's plays into three group;comedies,histories,tragedies.All of the works of the great playwright are written in four periods of his literary career. Each of these periods reflects a general phase of Shakespeare's artistic development. The first period includes all the plays written in 1590-1594.His comedies include; "The Comedy of Errors", "The Taming of the Shrew", "The Two Gentlemen of Verona", the histories "HenryVI" (Parts I, II, and III), "Richard III", "King John", and the tragedy "Titus Andronicus" were written during this period. They belong to different genres, but they have much in common. The plots of these plays follow their sources more mechanically then do the plots of Shakespeare's later works. Besides, these plays generally emphasize events more than the portrayal of characters. During the second period (1595-1600) Shakespeare wrote his comedies include; "A Midsummer Night's Dream","Love's Labour's Lost", "The Merchant of Venice", "As You Like It", "Much Ado About Nothing", "Twelfth Night", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", the tragedies "Romeo and Juliet", "Julius Caesar" and the histories "Richard II", "Henry IV" (Parts I and II), "Henry V" were written at this period, and in them the great playwright demonstrated his genius for weaving various dramatic actions into a unified plot, showed his gift for characterization. During the third period (1601-1608) Shakespeare wrote his great tragedies ("Hamlet", "Troilus and Cressida", "Othello", 'King Lear", "Macbeth", "Timon of 21

Athens", "Anthony and Cleopatra", "Coriolanus"), which made him truly immortal. Even the comedies of the period "All's Well That Ends Well" and "Measure for Measure" are more disturbing than amusing. That is why they are often called "problem" comedies or "bitter" comedies.” Pericles” represents Shakespeare's drama, which is generally serious in tone but with a happy ending. The fourth period (1609-1613). During this final period Shakespeare wrote tragedies ("Cymbeline", "The Winter's Tale". "The Tempest") and the history "Henry VIII". (Some critics state, that the history "Henry VIII" is written together with John Fletcher).The last years of Shakespeare's career as a playwright are characterized by a considerable change in the style of drama. Beaumont and Fletcher became the most popular dramatists of that time, and the plays of Shakespeare written during the fourth period are modeled after their dramatic technique. All of them are written around a dramatic conflict, but the tension in them is not so great as in the tragedies, all of them have happy endings. Shakespeare's first plays were written in the conventional style of the day. He wrote them in a stylised language that does not always spring naturally from the needs of the characters or the drama. The poetry depends on extended, sometimes elaborate metaphors and conceits, and the language is often rhetorical—written for actors to declaim rather than speak. The grand speeches in Titus Andronicus, in the view of some critics, often hold up the action, for example; and the verse in The Two Gentlemen of Verona has been described as stilted. Soon, however, Shakespeare began to adapt the traditional styles to his own purposes. The opening soliloquy of Richard III has its roots in the self-declaration of Vice in medieval drama. At the same time, Richard’s vivid self-awareness looks forward to the soliloquies of Shakespeare's mature plays.No single play marks a change from the traditional to the freer style. Shakespeare combined the two throughout his career, with Romeo and Juliet perhaps the best example of the mixing of the styles.By the time of Romeo and Juliet, Richard II, and A Midsummer Night's Dream in the mid-1590s, Shakespeare had begun to write a 22

more natural poetry. He increasingly tuned his metaphors and images to the needs of the drama itself. Shakespeare's standard poetic form was blank verse, composed in iambic pentameter. In practice, this meant that his verse was usually unrhymed and consisted of ten syllables to a line, spoken with a stress on every second syllable. The blank verse of his early plays is quite different from that of his later ones. It is often beautiful, but its sentences tend to start, pause, and finish at the end of lines, with the risk of monotony. After Hamlet, Shakespeare varied his poetic style further, particularly in the more emotional passages of the late tragedies. The literary critic A. C. Bradley described this style as "more concentrated, rapid, varied, and, in construction, less regular, not seldom twisted or elliptical". In the last phase of his career, Shakespeare adopted many techniques to achieve these effects. These included run-on lines, irregular pauses and stops, and extreme variations in sentence structure and length.The listener is challenged to complete the sense.The late romances, with their shifts in time and surprising turns of plot, inspired a last poetic style in which long and short sentences are set against one another, clauses are piled up, subject and object are reversed, and words are omitted, creating an effect of spontaneity. Shakespeare combined poetic genius with a practical sense of the theatre. Like all playwrights of the time, he dramatised stories from sources such as Plutarch and Holinshed. He reshaped each plot to create several centres of interest and to show as many sides of a narrative to the audience as possible. This strength of design ensures that a Shakespeare play can survive translation, cutting and wide interpretation without loss to its core drama. As Shakespeare’s mastery grew, he gave his characters clearer and more varied motivations and distinctive patterns of speech. He preserved aspects of his earlier style in the later plays, however. In Shakespeare's late romances, he deliberately returned to a more artificial style, which emphasised the illusion of theatre. 23

Shakespeare's work has made a lasting impression on later theatre and literature. In particular, he expanded the dramatic potential of characterisation, plot, language, and genre.Until Romeo and Juliet, for example, romance had not been viewed as a worthy topic for tragedy. Soliloquies had been used mainly to convey information about characters or events; but Shakespeare used them to explore characters' minds. His work heavily influenced later poetry. The Romantic poets attempted to revive Shakespearean verse drama, though with little success. Critic George Steiner described all English verse dramas from Coleridge to Tennyson as "feeble variations on Shakespearean themes." Shakespeare influenced novelists such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens. 8 The American novelist Herman Melville's soliloquies owe much to Shakespeare; his Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick is a classic tragic hero, inspired by King Lear. Scholars have identified 20,000 pieces of music linked to Shakespeare's works. These include two operas by Giuseppe Verdi, Otello and Falstaff, whose critical standing compares with that of the source plays.Shakespeare has also inspired many painters, including the Romantics and the Pre-Raphaelites. The Swiss Romantic artist Henry Fuseli, a friend of William Blake, even translated Macbeth into German. The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud drew on Shakespearean psychology, in particular that of Hamlet, for his theories of human nature. In Shakespeare's day, English grammar, spelling and pronunciation were less standardised than they are now, and his use of language helped shape modern English.Samuel Johnson quoted him more often than any other author in his A Dictionary of the English Language, the first serious work of its type. Expressions such as "with bated breath" (Merchant of Venice) and "a foregone conclusion" (Othello) have found their way into everyday English speech. Shakespeare was not revered in his lifetime, but he received his share of praise.In 1598, the cleric and author Francis Meres singled him out from a group of English writers as "the most excellent" in both comedy and tragedy. And the authors of the Parnassus plays at St John's College, Cambridge, numbered him with Chaucer, Gower and Spenser. In the First Folio, Ben Jonson called Shakespeare the "Soul of the age, the applause, delight, the wonder of our stage", though he had remarked elsewhere that "Shakespeare wanted art". A recently garlanded statue of William Shakespeare in Lincoln Park, Chicago, typical of many created in the XIX th and early XX th century. Between the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 and the end of the XVII th century, classical ideas were in vogue. As a result, critics of the time mostly rated Shakespeare below John Fletcher and Ben Jonson.Thomas Rymer, for example, condemned Shakespeare for mixing the comic with the tragic. Nevertheless, poet and critic John Dryden rated Shakespeare highly, saying of Jonson, "I admire him, but I love Shakespeare". For several decades, Rymer's view held sway; but during the XVIII th century, critics began to respond to Shakespeare on his own terms and acclaim what they termed his natural genius. A series of scholarly editions of his work, notably those of Samuel Johnson in 1765 and Edmond Malone in 1790, added to his growing reputation.By 1800, he was firmly enshrined as the national poet. In the XVIII th and XIX th centuries, his reputation also spread abroad. Among those who championed him were the writers Voltaire, Goethe, Stendhal and Victor Hugo. During the Romantic era, Shakespeare was praised by the poet and literary philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge; and the critic August Wilhelm Schlegel translated his plays in the spirit of German Romanticism. In the XIX th century, critical admiration for Shakespeare's genius often bordered on adulation."That King Shakespeare," the essayist Thomas Carlyle wrote in 1840, "does not he shine, in crowned sovereignty, over us all, as the noblest, gentlest, yet strongest of rallying signs; indestructible". The Victorians produced his plays as lavish 25

spectacles on a grand scale. The playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw mocked the cult of Shakespeare worship as "bardolatry". He claimed that the new naturalism of Ibsen's plays had made Shakespeare obsolete. The modernist revolution in the arts during the early XX th century, far from discarding Shakespeare, eagerly enlisted his work in the service of the avant-garde. The Expressionists in Germany and the Futurists in Moscow mounted productions of his plays. Marxist playwright and director Bertolt Brecht devised an epic theatre under the influence of Shakespeare. The poet and critic T. S. Eliot argued against Shaw that Shakespeare's "primitiveness" in fact made him truly modern. Eliot, along with G. Wilson Knight and the school of New Criticism, led a movement towards a closer reading of Shakespeare's imagery. In the 1950s, a wave of new critical approaches replaced modernism and paved the way for "post-modern" studies of Shakespeare. By the eighties, Shakespeare studies were open to movements such as structuralism, feminism, New Historicism, African American studies, and queer studies. CHAPTER II. SHAKESPEARE’S LITERARY CAREER AS A SONNETEER This chapter dedicate to Shakspeare’s literary career as a sonneteer and analysis,theme of his sonnets.We know his sonnets are deducated to “the 26

young man” and “the dark lady”.The muses are used to break down the sonnets into three sequances,as follows 1.The Fair Youth Sonnets Sonnets 1-126 of his sonnets are adressed to the fair youth with whom the poet has a deep and loving friendship 2.The Dark Lady Sonnets Sonnets 127-152 are addressed to the dark lady .The speaker introduces the woman by explaining that her beauty is unconventional. 3. The Greek Sonnets Final two sonnets are very different and draw upon the Roman myth of Cypid,to whom the poet has already compared his muses. Scholars and critics have made many attempts to discover all the mysteries of Shakespeare's sonnets, as they may shed light on his life, but generally to no avail. It is important to remember that Shakespeare's sonnets were written at a time when such sequences were fashionable, and thus the sonnets may be more an exercise in literary convention than in autobiography. 2.1. Shakespeare and the Essence of Verse An artist usually presents a given object or idea in one relationship to other objects and ideas; if he opens his reader’s consciousness to more than one frame of reference, he focuses on the object in one of its relationships 27

and subordinates all other relationships to it. The essential action of the artist in creating the experience of an audience is the one that in grammar is made by indicators of relationship like “although,” “but,” “after,” “because,” “however.” In literature such indicators of relationship tell the reader that he is not in the borderless world outside art where he himself has always to work upon what he perceives, to arrange it around a focal point chosen and maintained by himself. Syntactic organization tells the reader that he is dealing with what we are likely to label “truth,” experience sorted, classed, and rated, rather than with “what is true,” the still to be sorted data of “real” experience. 9 When an artist focuses his audience’s mind and distorts what is true into a recognizable, graspable shape to fit that mind, he not only does what his audience asks but what cannot long satisfy audience or artist just because the desired distortion is a distortion. Art must distort; if it is to justify its existence, it must be other than the reality whose difficulty necessitates artistic mediation. It must seem as little a distortion as possible, because its audience wants comprehension of incomprehensible reality itself. We do not want so much to live in a world organized on human principles as to live in the world so organized. Art must seem to reveal a humanly ordered reality rather than replace a random one. There are as many ways of trying for the contradictory effects of art as there are artists. All of them aim at replacing the complexities of reality with controlled complexities that will make the experience of the orderly work of art sufficiently similar to the experience of random nature, so that the comfort of artistic coherence will not be immediately dismissed as irrelevant to the intellectual discomfort of the human condition. Of all literary artists, Shakespeare has been most admired. know what cannot be known and that what we know is the unknowable thing we want to know and not something else. I have tried to demonstrate that in the sonnets Shakespeare copes with the problem of the conflicting obligations of a work of art by multiplying the number of ordering principles, systems of organization, and frames of reference in the individual sonnets. Shakespeare’s multiplication of ordering systems is typically Shakespearean in being unusual not in itself but in its degree. The principle of multiple orders is a defining principle of verse in general. Although “verse” and “prose” are not really precise terms, verse is ordinarily distinguishable from prose in that it presents its materials organized in at least two self-assertive systems at once: at least one of meaning and at least one of sound. The sonnets are almost all constructed from three quatrians which are four-line stanzas, and a final couplet composed in iambic pentameter.This also the meter used extensively in Shakespeare’s plays.The rhyme scheme is also the meter abab cdcd efef gg.Sonnets using this scheme are known as Shakespearean sonnets,often the beginning of the third quatrain marks the volta(“turn”) or the line in which the mood of the poem shifts,and the poet expresses a revelation or epiphany.There are a few exceptions:sonnet 99,126 and 145.Number 99 has fifteen lines,number 126 consists of six couplets and two blank lines marked with italic bracets;145 is an iambic tetrameters,not pentameters.Thereis one other variation on the standard structure,found for example in sonnet 29. The normal rhyme scheme is changed by repeating the “b” of quatrain one in quatrain three, where the “f” should be.When analysed as characters,the subject of the sonnets are usually referred to as the Fair Youth, The Rival Poet and the Dark Lady.The speaker expresses admiration for the Fair Youth’s beauty and and has an affair with the Dark Lady.It is 29

not known whether the poems and their characters are fiction or autobiographical,notably A.L.Rowse have attempted to identify the characters with historical individuals.Fair youth is the unnamed young man to whom sonnets 1-126 are addressed.Some commentators,nothing the romantic and loving language used in this sequence of sonnets,have suggested a sexual relationship between them;others have read the relationship as platonic love. The earliest poems in the sequence recommended the benefits of marriage and children.With the famous sonnet 18 (“shall I compare thee to a summer’s day”)the tone changes dramatically towards romantic intimacy.Sonnet 20 explicity laments that the young man is not woman.Most of the subsquent sonnets describe the ups and downs of the relationship,culminating with an affair between the poet and the Dark Lady.The relationship seems to end when The Fair Youth succumbs to the Lady’s charms.There have been many attempts to identify the young man.Shakespeare’s one-time patron,Henry Wriothesley,3 r d Earl of Southampton is commonly suggested,although Shakespeare’s later patron,William Herbert,3 rd Earl of Pembroke,has recently become popular.Both claims begin with the dedication of the sonnets to “Mr,W.H.,”The only beggeter of these ensuing sonnets“ ;the initials could apply to either earl.However,while Shakespeare’s language often seems to imply that the subject is of higher social status than himself,the apparent references to the poet’s inferiority may simply be part of the rhetoric of romantic submission. An alternative theory,most famously espoused by Oscar Wilde’s short story “The Portrait of Mr.W.H.” Wild’s story acknowledges that there is no evidence for such a person’s existance.Samuel Butler believed that the friend was a seaman.Joseph Pequigney argued in his book Such is My Love that the Fair Youth was an unknown commoner.The Dark Lady sequence 30

distinguishes itself from the Fair Youth sequence by being overtly sexual in its passion.Among these,sonnet 151 has been characterised as “bawdy” and is used to illustrate the difference between the spiritual love for the fair youth and the sexual love for the Dark Lady.The distinction is commonly made in the introduction to modern editions of the sonnets.The Dark Lady is so called because the poems make it clear that she has back black hair and dun coloured skin.As with the Fair Youth,there have been many attempts to identify her with a real historicalindividual.Mary Fitton,Emilia Lanier and others have been suggested.The Rival Poet’s identity remains a mystery;among the varied candidates are Christopher Marlowe,George Chapman,or,an amalgamation of several contemporaries. 1 0 However,there is no hard evidence that the character had a rel life counterpart.The speaker sees the Rival as competition for fame,coin and patronage.The sonnets most commonly identified as the Rival Poet group exist within the Fair Youth sequence in sonnets 78-86.Shakespeare’s sonnets can be seen as a prototype,or even the beginning of new kind of modern love poetry.The sonnets have great cross-cultural importance and influence.The sonnet of Petrarch and Shakespeare represent,in the history of this major poetic developments in terms of technical consolidation-by renovating the inherited material -and artistic expressiveness-by covering a wide range of subject in an equally wide range of tones.Both writers cemented the sonnet’s enduring appeal by demonsrating its flexibility and lyrical potency through the exceptionalquality of their poems. While they each approach the subject of their poems through sonnet forms,there are fundamental differences in their style and form,as well as in the way they undergo the discussion of their subjects.Adittionally,it is apparent that in “sonnet 130” ,Shakespeare actually saterizes Petrarch style’s style and musings as his narrator describes his mistress,whose “eyes are nothing like the sun”.Shakespeare appears to be making light of the 33

metaphor and exaggerated comparison found in Petrarch’s work by offering an English sonnet describing the very ungoddess like nature of his dark mistress.Conversely,Petrarch’s work is rich in imagery and not spare a syllable in its glorification and deification of the object of his desires,Laura.As can be seen in sonnet 292 from the Canzoniere,the extensive use of metaphor and the idealization of Petrarch’s female subject are characteristic of the Petrarchan sonnet.The first major difference between the two sonnets is the sonnet form used.Petrarch’s sonnet 292 is writtenin the 14-line Italian sonnet form consisting of an eight line octave and a six line sestet.The main characteristic of the Petrarchan sonnet form is its two part structure.This is achieved by splitting the eight line octave into two four line stanzas or quatrains.Similarity,the sestet is split into two three line stanzas or tercets.This form allows for development of the of two aspects of the theme,broadening the perspective piece. Shakespeare’s 14 line English sonnet consists of a three quatrain argument,followed by a two line,couplet resolution.The form of the English sonnet allows for the developments of three perspectives on the theme through the argument,followed by the resolution,which offers either an affirmation or challenge of the preceding quatrains.While the forms of these two works may vary,they both suseed in conveying the dramatic situations of the poems.The dramatic situations found in each of these two poems are markedly different.In Petrarch’s octave,he illustrates all the beautiful qualities his love possessess.The first quatrain is dedicated to her eyes,hands,feet and face,all of which set the narrator’s exitence apart from the commonality of every day life.This listing of her attributes, or blazon,is meant for emphasis and harkens back to the tradition of courty love.Quatrain begins with the lady ”tumbled mane of uncut gold”,an allusion to the yellow braids of Petrarch’ sonnet 90.Petrarch’s narrator goes 34

on to describe his love’s angelic smile,which together with her golden hair,turns the earh to Paradise. He continues to the end of the octave,indicating that all of thes lovely attributes,”have come to dust;no life,no sense.His love has died and so have paradise and his exquisitely uncommon existence.The woman,whom Petrarch’s narrator had professed his love and passion for in the previous 291 sonnets of the Canzoniere,was no more.Petrarch’s tercets go on in metaphor to say the narrator has lost his guiding light and that the “dismasted ship” that is his life,has been “wracked by the storm “ of love and loss.He declares “let there be no more love songs! The dear spring/of my accustomed art has been drained dry”,indicating that he shall write no more;his lyre dissolved in his flood of tears.While Petrarch’s story is one of lost love,Shakespeare offers a different perspective in sonnet 130. Shakespeare’s narrator loves his mistress,but describes her in a mostly peculiar way,which seems to satirize Petrarch’s overtly starry eyed prose.The dramatic situation in sonnet 130 is that of the narrator describing his lady as less than perfect.It is indicated that her beauty and features pale when compared those of nature,”if hairs be wires,black wires grow on her head./I have seen roses damasked,red and white “However,in the resolution couplet of the sonnet,the narrator still treasures her,and his rare love for exists despite all of this.This poem does not comprise any discernable part of a grander plot estableshed by other works of the author,so its apparent that this poem stands alone,with no precucursors leadin up to its situation. In his argument,Shakespeare’s narrator supplies imagery that paints an imperfect picture of his mistress.Shakespeare’s language in this sonnet is very grounded and real,in contrast with Petrarch’s which idializes his subject and places her on a pedestal.The description of the mistress is stark and seemingly insulting throughout the argument.His style is similar to Petrarch’s,and Shakespeare seems to mirror that same tradition of 35

blazon,comparing his lady’s features to the treasures of nature.Their similarities part,though,in their description of their subject.Petrarch appears much more idealistic and lofty in his narrative,making his woman into an angelic goddess,while Shakespeare takes a much more honest,realistic approach,recognizing the beauty a person can have within them,not just aesthetically.At one point in sonnet 130 Shakespeare actually comes right out and states that his lady is not a goddess:” I grant I never saw a goddess go,/my mistress when she waks,treads on the ground”By offering that is not goddess like,it follows that she cannot be a goddess.Petrarch’s attitude is based in in the tradition of courtly love.Where the poetry of love is concerned,there certainly could be no better example of differing approaches or attitudes than has been outlined here.While Shakespeare and Petrarch use their works to adress the subject of their loves,or in case of Petrarch,the loss of his love,they do so using different styles. 2.2 . Latinity and Desire in Shakespeare sonnets The maze of repetitions, puns, and cross-references in Shakespeare’s sonnets constitutes one of their principal seductions, a powerful version of the erotic pull whose structure they unfold in their analysis of friendship, love, desire, jealousy, hope, frustration, and self-deception. Shakespeare exploits the fact that English vocabulary draws so heavily on Latin 1 1 .As distinct from much work on Shakespeare’s Latinity. reading the sonnets in which Shakespeare’s training in Latin emerges as part of the poems’ basic texture, as their way of hearing words and of approaching meaning through that hearing. When Shakespeare tells the beloved young man that “thou art all my art, and doost aduance / As high as learning, my rude ignorance” (78. 13–14), “thou art” wittily doubles “my art.” The first “art” is native in origin, the second Roman (Lat. ars , “art” or “skill”); juxtaposed, they bring together being and poetry, in order to reinforce the poem’s argument that the beloved gives Shakespeare’s verse its entire substance and being, rather than its mere “stile” (78. 12). Typical here is how Shakespeare activates the pun through the line’s internal symmetries, so that the two “arts,” one the poet’s and the other the beloved’s, pivot around “all” and thus, in that balancing, absorb a little of one another’s meaning. Technically, the pun involves the figure of antanaclasis, “which in repeating a word shifts from one of its meanings to another.” The auxiliary meanings that emerge through etymological hearing are produced by the poem rather than being prior to it: Shakespeare’s line, that is, exerts a pressure on both words in order to make each one’s etymological structure audible as philosophical. Sonnet 38 explicitly takes up the relation of Shakespeare’s English poetry to the poetry and language of the classical past, by transforming the young man into a tenth muse to supplement the Greek nine, and by audibly pitching English and Latin against one another: Be thou the tenth Muse, ten times more in worth Then those old nine which rimers invocate, And he that calls on thee, let him bring forth Eternal numbers to out-live long date. (ll. 9–12) 37

Scrupulously mirroring the mere rhymers’ invocation (Lat. in-vocare , “to call”) of their muses, the poet instead “calls on” his new and English muse. Similarly, deriving from the Latin aeternus , the “eternal” numbers of immortal poetry receive a vernacular equivalent in “out-liue long date,” a modest and even creaky formulation that nonetheless precisely captures the distinction, alive in Latin, between a perpetual endurance in time and an eternal elevation above time. Sonnet 44 opens by turning the distance between the poet and the young man into injury: If the dull substance of my flesh were thought, Injurious distance should not stop my way, For then dispight of space I would be brought, From limits farre remote, where thou doost stay, No matter then although my foote did stand Vpon the farthest earth remoou’d from thee, For nimble thought can jumpe both sea and land, As soone as thinke the place where he would be. But ah, thought kills me that I am not thought To leape large lengths of miles when thou art gone, But that so much of earth and water wrought, I must attend, times leasure with my mone. Receiving naughts by elements so sloe, But heauie teares, badges of eithers woe. The argument of the poem unfolds in a series of feints around the corporeal and incorporeal, spirit and matter. Because flesh is substance (that is, matter) and not thought, distance opposes itself to eros, exactly by becoming like matter, that is, an obstacle to “stop” the poet’s “way.” This is, curiously, to say that distance materially blocks, not just the poet’s access to the beloved, but also the intervening distance (or “way”) between them. 38

Immaterial and material, distance does injury by working against itself even as it works against the poet/lover. Shakespeare locates something of this paradox in the word itself:distance,rooted in the latin dis-and stare (to stand or to stay ),is spesifically a standing or staying apart. The poem registers that parting in lines 4-6 in the difference between the foot’s standing and friend’s staying; accordingly the erotically charged distance between poet and friend is figured as a standing apart from a standing. Extending the pun deeper into the poem’s syntax, Shakespeare makes distance the state of difference, also, between two moods of the same verb: in “did stand” (l. 5), the foot’s removal from the beloved is marked as a di[d]stance and as a distance from “doost stay” (l. 4).The poem is about overcoming these real and textual distances, about the desire, in despite of distance, to reach the beloved. The poem’s linguistic playfulness contributes to this program, because the turning of and returning to the word’s origins effectively unmakes the word; by so doing, Shakespeare reimagines the structure of distance itself,in order then to identify a way around it.As part of the analysis, the poem pitches distance against dispight:”for then dispight of space I would be brought “(1.3) The punning juxtaposition of the words makes distance’s spite audible. But the proximity of the words is resonant also in a more important way, since “spight” has been identified in sonnet 36 as the very principle that separates the lovers from one another. In our two loves there is but one respect Though in our lives a seperable spight, Which though it alter not loves sole effect, Yet doth it steale sweet houres from loves delight….(36.5-8) The seperable spight here is some force, probably social, capable of seperating of the poet and beloved or keeping them at a distance from one another. In sonnet 44 where the poet longs to be immaterial in order that “then dispight of space I would be brought, From limits farre remote,where 39

thou doost stay”,part of the force of the formulation is that, in analogy with distance as a standing apart,”dispight“ momentarily splits the separating “spight” from itself. “Dispight,” that is, gently reverses the work of“distance” by making the distance that spitefully separates loving poet and beloved friend stand apart from itself, exactly as a “dispight of space.” The adverbial phrase thus provides, as a kind of pulse inside the syntactic meaning, a curiously apposite de ﬁ nition of “distance.” Distance itself is a “dispight of space,” a contempt for space in the sense of being the agent, as it were, of moving across itself by already including the space it semantically refers to. Just as the poem has materialized distance against itself (as it sown material obstacle), so too, through the play of “distance” and “dispight,” it ﬁ nds in distance the dematerialization of space as the word’s instantaneous absorption of the space it designates. This is, in language, already the equivalent of the poet’s wish to collapse distance by thinking his ﬂ esh across space as “thought” (44. 1).The poem’s verbal materialization and dematerialization of distance grounds its argument about the nature of the erotic body, and it does so through a second and coordinated set of puns about standing. The play of material and immaterial through which Shakespeare understands “distance” is replicated in his treatment of “substance,” a concept introduced in the ﬁ rst line: “If the dull substance of my ﬂ esh were thought” (44. 1). Distance, the poem says, would be “no matter” (l. 5) if ﬂ esh were thought, that is, if ﬂ esh were precisely no matter . If ﬂ esh is a “substance” (l. 1), the foot that stands on “earth” in lines 5–6 reminds the reader that that substance is, etymologically, a standing under (Lat. sub- “under” stare , “to stand”). The root meaning is supported and complicated in the third quatrain by the poet’s lament that “so much of earth and water wrought, / I must attend, times leasure with my mone” (ll. 11–12). As the earth that stands under his own foot, the poet is materially the dull substance he desires not to be. His foot stands on earth, and is earth, and earth is that which stands under: the poet’s ﬂ esh and substance.That said, the curious circling back of standing and 40

matter enabled by the play of Latin and English necessarily suggests another possibility: if earth is that which stands under the foot (as, therefore, its “substance”), ﬂ esh would seem not itself to be substance,but rather that under which substance stands. The suggestion is already present in line 1, in fact, in the two available ways of reading the genitive phrase “of my ﬂ esh”: on the one hand, ﬂ esh is, as matter, simply the equivalent of “dull substance”; on the other, ﬂ esh is exactly that possessed of substance, substance being that which “stands under” ﬂ esh as a sustaining principle that is not (as the poet laments) thought. Just as with the poem’s materialization of immaterial “distance,” substance points equally toward the corporeal and beyond it. For all its despair about heavy ﬂ eshliness, the poem implies two ways of reading substance, posing a problem and in identical terms suggesting its solution. Read against sonnet 44’s “attend,” “tender” becomes both a conceptual and a material structure for love. The “Embassie of love” is said to be “tender” not just because it is an embassy of love , but also, more simply, because it is an embassy, a representation of the self sent out by the lover and stretched across the distance separating him from the beloved. In this, the poet’s embassy recalls the structure of erotic intention from an earlier poem grounded in the conceit that at night the poet’s love for the absent friend keeps him awake: “For then my thoughts (from far where I abide) / Intend a jelous pilgrimage to thee” (27. 5–6). The difficulty for the weary poet here is that intending (Lat. in- tendere ) the pilgrimage is, as a stretching toward something, already to go on the journey. Like this intending toward the object of contemplation or desire, sonnet 45’s tenderness constitutes a connection, answering the peculiarly materialized distance of sonnet 44 by itself materializing the relation that is to overcome such distance. But if thought and desire are tender, and attending flesh correspondingly dull, Shakespeare’s treatment of substance will not allow that opposition 41

between material and immaterial to remain absolute. Indeed, the sequence as a whole has opened with an image of a material tenderness whose purpose is to extend beauty across time: From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beauties Rose might neuer die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heire might beare his memory . . . (1. 1–4) Against the hope of a tender heir, the poem pertinently opposes a second logic by which, unhappily, the young man finds himself “contracted to thine owne bright eyes” (1. 5), which is to say betrothed to them and shrunken into them. From the Latin con- trahere (“draw together”), “contracted” precisely undoes the elastic materiality of tenderness: whereas the heir promises to extend the young man’s beauty into the future, his unhappy self-marriage only draws him inward to an isolated present. Like the philological method of exploiting the distant Latin roots of English words, tenderness materially evokes distance: the distance between loving poet and beloved friend, between a literary past and literary present, between the exemplary Latin and Greek world and Shakespeare’s English praise. If the friend’s beauty overpowers the past, this argues too that the poetry in his praise has for that reason become classic. This is what Shakespeare imagines in a poem about the future reception of his own verse: Who will beleeue my verse in time to come If it were fild with your most high deserts? Though yet heauen knowes it is but as a tombe Which hides your life, and shewes not halfe your parts: If I could write the beauty of your eyes, And in fresh numbers number all your graces, The age to come would say this Poet lies, 42

Such heauenly touches nere toucht earthly faces. So should my papers (yellowed with their age) Be scorn d, like old men of lesse truth then tongue, And your true rights be termd a Poets rage, And stretched miter of an Antique song. But were some childe of yours alive that time, You should live twise in it, and in my rime. (17. 1–14) The poem seems doubly self-deprecating: first, it insists that the poet is unable to “write the beauty of your eyes” (l. 5) and instead “hides your life” (l. 4); second, even if the poetry were able sufficiently to praise, it would not do justice to the young man’s beauty because it would not be believed. In this double self-criticism, however, Shakespeare paradoxically imagines his poetry exactly as a classic, being read in the future as his present now reads its “Antique” songs, such that the imagined reader and critic of the sonnets analogizes the classical philologist who glosses and emends the poetry of Rome and Greece. The sonnets, Shakespeare announces, will be subject to the critical work appropriate for a classic. Although the poem’s principal argument in favor of the young man’s having a son is that even a poetry “fild with your most high deserts” would not be believed, the poet simultaneously imagines poetry as a medium able powerfully to join present, past, and future. Read through the materiality of tenderness that we have been tracing, furthermore, the “stretched” meter of the “Antique song” that is Shakespeare’s poem as imagined from the future captures this doubled account of poetic efficacy. ﬁ nds its mechanics. For if the young man is a “tender chorle” (1. 12) and the poet his slave, whose only role is to “tend, / upon the houres, and times of your desire”(57. 1–2), the shared sound (tender/tend), even as it differentiates between erotic roles, also promises a kind of reciprocity, the tenderness of the intending lover answered by the tenderness of the beloved: a “mutuall render onely me for thee” (125. 12).Indeed, the sonnets propose a word for this reciprocal structure in a poem about the work of time: Like as the waves make towards the pibled shore, So do our minuites hasten to their end, Each changing place with that with goes before, In sequent toile all forwards do contend. Read according to its modular parts as well as its more easily heard English meaning, “con-tend” expresses the stretching of the waves towards the shore in terms of a shared purpose, an intending together to the shore. On its own, this is, of course, too optimistic a reading of the word, since “contend” bespeaks principally a rivalry, the waves struggling against one another to reach their goal. This failure of reciprocity that the sonnets document is analogized in one poem as the failed economy between the poet and the object of his praise, and, most pertinently for the present argument, as a radical undoing of tenderness. 2.3. The use of literary devices in Shakespeare sonnets. Shakespeare likely did not write his sonnets with a conscious emphasis on literary devices, and early editors of the sonnets paid little attention to such devices (with the exception of metaphor and allusion). However, in the era of most modern literature theory and close riding, much weight is given to the construction or deconstruction of the sonnets and Shakespeare’s use of figures of speech such as alliteration, assonance, antithesis, metonymy, synecdoche, oxymoron and others. 44

Much modern criticism 1 3 also places heavy emphasis on the sexual puns and double entendres in the sonnets Shakespeare used antithesis and synecdoche. We come arose examples of these literary devices in Sonnet 12. When I do count the clock that tells the time, And see the brave day sunk in hideous night, When I behold the violet past prime, And sable curls all silver’d oer with white; When lofty truss I see barren of leaves which erst from heart did canopy the herd, And summers green all girded up in sheaves, Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard, Then of thy beauty do I question make, That thou among the wastes of time must go, Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake And die as fast as they see others grow; And nothing gains times sieth can make defense Saue breed to braue him, when he takes thee hence. Shakespeare uses antithesis in this sonnet. We come across the word hideous in sonnet. The exact meaning here is likely derived from the old French hissed meaning dreaded thus we have a balanced antithesis in brave| day and hideous night. We may come across another word summer’s green. Shakespeare here uses a literary device known as synecdoche by which a specifies part is taken for the whole; thus summer’s greent is the bounty of crops. For examples of Shakespeare’s use of metonymy in sonnet 59 If their bee nothing new, but that Math been before, how are our brains beguiled, which laboring for intention bearer amisse. Here brains … former child (2-4) and extended metaphor describing the poet’s brain as a mother’s womb, labouring to bring forth original verse only to mistakenly write something (“second burden”) that has already been written (“former child”), as if the mother had suffered two bouts of labour to give birth to the same child twice. Oh that record could with a backward looke, Even of five hundredth courses of the Sunne. Five hundredth courses of the Sunne i.e five hundred years by metonymy. Sonnet 55 is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works and noticeable deviation from other sonnets in which he appears insecure about his relationships and his own self worth. Not marble, nor the gilded monument, of Princes shall out – live this powerful rime. Not marble, nor the guilded monument This line is likely an allusion to the lavish tombs of English royalty; in particular, to the tomb of Henry VII in Westminster Abbey, which contains a large sarcophagus made of black marble with gilded effigies of Ring Henry and his queen, Elizabeth of York. Poetic devices are often utilized by authors to emphasize and clarify their overall theme. One such device is alliteration where a beginning sound of a word is employed more than once in a line Shakespeare presents alliteration as the most important tool to understanding his moral in sonnet 71. “Than thou shall hear the surly sullen bell”, clearly invokes a mood of sadness. 1 4 The alliteration of the “S” sound is profound in seizing the reader’s focus and from it, one can imagine a church bell. Next alliteration is again employed in line 4. “From this vile world with vilest worms to devell” The repeated use of the “V” and “W” wound is apparent and brings attention to 14 FORT J.A. an illustration Shakespeare’s creating. Here, an image of a cruel world can be deducted, so grim that even the worms that crawl through the earth are evil. Lastly, in the couplet another image is highlighted through the repetition of the “w” sound. “Lest the wise world” suggests a picture of a world full of intelligent people. These persons know that death is just another part of life and not to over grieve the dead. Shakespeare used the oxymoron quite often to express mixed emotions both in his plats and his sonnets. For example we can come across oxymoron in sonnet 144. “Fill my bad angel fire my good one out” Here we can see oxymoron, we know oxymoron is opposite words bad and good such words Sonnet 151. “Then, gentle cheater, urge not my amisse” Sonnet 72 “Unless you would device some virtuous lie” Sonnet 130 My mistres eyes are nothing like the sunne, Currall is farre more red,then her lips red, If snow be white, why then her brests are dun: If haires be wiers, black wiers grow on her head: I haue seene Roses damaskt, red and white, But no such Roses see I in her cheekes, And in some perfumes is there more delight, Then in the breath that from my Mistres reekes. I loue to heare her speake, yet well I know, That Musicke hath a farre more pleasing sound: I graunt I never saw a goddesse goe, 47

My Mistres when shee walkes treads on the ground. And yet by heaven I thinke my love as rare, As any she beli’d with false compare. 15 In his sonnet 130 William Shakespeare makes heavy use of irony and satire.Indeed his description of his mistress appears at first glance to be anything but flattering. However, a closer analysis of the sonnet brings to the fore deeper preooccupations than humor,Indeed,the poet is instead deeply concerned with truth and love,and denounces falsehoodthrought the sonnet.The first line of the sonnet sets the tone:”My mistress eyes are nothing like the sunne” brings forth several images.It estableshes that the poem will break with the lyric traditions of its period by reversing a common comparison with the sun,a custommary allusion to antique myth,This line,however,is ambigious.The simile only establishes the exclusion of the comparison,without enforcing a posetive or negative connotation.This reversal,however,is reinforced by the rhyme scheme “sunne”, “dun”(1.3) This association by position emphasizes the irony of the comparisons used.Additionally,the sonnet abounds with reversed hyperbole’s which are indicated by the following operators ; are nothing like/far more/no such roses/never saw (1,2,6,10,11) With the use of these operators,the break with the expected lyricsm is complete:just as the mistress is nothing like any traditional objects of comparison(sun,roses,goddess,snow) the poem itself is out of the ordinary and breaks with tradition. In writing sonnet 130,Shakespeare relied very heavily on strong sensory images to get his satirical message across. of the poem.Like sonnet 130,most sonnets are 14 lines in length and wtitten in a meter called iambic pentameter with an alternating abab rhyme scheme.In order to form iambic pentameter,the writer chooses words that alternate between an unsterssed and a stressed syllable;the first sentence of the sonnet,written out to show the stressed syllables in capital letters,would read “my MIStress’ EYES are Nothing LIKE the SUN.”Finally,sonnets often have a surpising twist to them towards the end ;in this poem,the twist comes when the reader sees that,despite his criticsms,the author does actually love his mistress.Hyperbole is a form of speech that exaggerates the facts in order to make a point.To the same extent that many romantic poets exaggerate the beauty of their mistresses,insisting that their eyes are more beautiful than the sun,their hair fairer than hold or their cheeks redder than roses,Shakespeare decides to exaggerate how unatracctive his misress is. Sonnet 130 suggests that mistress’ hair is made of black wire,her breath reeks,her breasts are grayish brown and her voice is grating.Shakespeare’s sonnet 130 also uses satire as a literary device.In writing this poem,he was gently poking fun at the conventional romantic poems that were being written by other poets.In pointing out that his mistress’ eyes are not more beautiful than the sun,that her hair is not made of gold threads,that her cheeks are not as red as roses and that her breath is not finer than perfume,he was able to make the argument that he loves her just the same for who she is and not for an unrealistic idealized notion of beauty.Sonnet 130 is starkly different in theme than Shakespeare’s other sonnets.Most of his sonets praise his lover’s beauty,wi and worth.In fact,women are almost deified in many sonnets.Some are more melancholy than others,but no sonnet,seems insulting except this one! Flesh colors and Shakespeare’s sonnets Readers of Shakespeare’s sonnets have noted that the sequence moves along a gamut of color, from the “fairest creatures” of the first sonnet to the praise of “black” in sonnet 127. The narrative of the sequence is often described as an opposition between colors, a contrast between the fairness of the young man and the blackness of the dark lady. Recent critics have given us powerful readings that lend new cultural force to these categories of color, for they argue that darkness can be correlated 54

with race and ethnicity: it is aligned in A. L. Rowse’s early and highly problematic formulation with the dark skin of the Italianate Aemilia Lanyer, and in other more recent suggestions, advanced by such scholars of early modern colonialism as Kim Hall, with the negro or blackamoor. Color was more than the shade of skin visible to the eye; it was the expression of an entire bodily composition that included a relatively opaque interior. Attention to a more encompassing understanding of color is thus essential to a comprehension of the way the chromatic register works both in the sonnets and in the cultural imaginary of this period. 1 8 Color had various sources that ranged from the philosophical and artistic to the medical and rhetorical, and the richness of this chromatic vocabulary laid the groundwork for a structure onto which discourses of race could ultimately graft themselves. Color is central to this process both because Shakespeare is working with an inherited vocabulary of praise that makes the chromatic a central feature and, more importantly, because color is one of the most potent early modern discourses about the material person, about the relations between psychic life, gender, and the increasingly inscrutable, unreadable surfaces of the body. Ah yet doth beauty, like a dial hand, Steal from his figure, and no pace perceived; So your sweet hue, which methinks still doth stand, Hath motion, and mine eye may be deceived: For fear of which, hear this, thou age inbred, Ere you were born was beauty’s summer dead. 1 9 The poem turns on an exchange of vision between the poet and the young man, crystallized in the “your eye I eyed,” a phrase that joins the speaker and the fair friend in their reciprocal gaze. It makes the “eye” both an instrument of vision and a seen object, a mirroring that is both reproduced and distorted in the acoustic register through the insertion of the subject, the “I,” between “eye” and “eyed.” This specular echo anticipates the analogic reflection that informs the poem: the comparison between human age and seasonal change. Nature’s cycles express themselves in caloric shifts that are in turn displayed as changes in color, from green spring to yellow autumn. Color functions as a temporal marker, and the potential for chromatic mutation is immanent, for just as one color becomes another through the addition of heat or cold, so does the human body contain the seeds of its own changing colors through time, as in the “sable curls all silvered o’er with white” of sonnet 12. Time writes on human bodies in cryptic signs, and color is one of its most dramatic markers. The analogy between human bodies and plants is not just metaphorical, of course, but also relied in part on the Renaissance doctrine of signatures, the belief that natural objects expressed their purpose through a language of inscribed signs. canker blooms have full as deep a dye / As the perfumed tincture of the roses” – color serves as a delusive sign system that fails to distinguish the true rose from its false copy. Sonnet 99 is a blazon that draws on classical, biblical, and Petrarchan traditions of comparing the beloved’s body to a catalogue of flowers. Shakespeare’s speaker apostrophizes the violet, lily, marjoram, and rose, singling out their floral attributes – color and scent – and declaring each deficient by comparison to the beloved. He inverts the conventional analogy by insisting that the flowers have stolen their distinguishing characteristic from the beloved: “The purple pride / Which on thy soft cheek for complexion dwells, / In my love’s veins thou hast too grossly dyed.” What begins as analogic becomes in this comparison an infiltration and conceptual tangling, a transgression of the body’s boundaries, as if the flower had invaded these venous passageways and mortally immersed itself there, its violet color the mark of that bloody saturation. The action of dyeing is a transfer not only of color but also of identity; like the “dyer’s hand” of sonnet 111, its “nature is subdued / To what it works in.” “Subdue,” etymologically associated with seduction, carries the sense of deceit, theft, and overpowering, as if amorous and sexual relationships involved a tainting or blending of color that was also a transfer of fundamental nature. Sonnet 99 is the only one of Shakespeare’s sonnets to exceed fourteen lines, and the supernumerary line is usually considered to be line 5, “In my love’s veins thou hast too grossly dyed.”The tincture of color appears not only to have exceeded the metaphoric border between ﬂ ower and body, but also to have spilled over structurally, replicating itself in a suffusion of both color and rhyme. The parallelism of color and scent thus becomes an invasion of boundary, an imaging of the intimacy of sexual congress in language that is also a transgression of bodily and poetic limit. Sonnets 97, 98, and 99 are often seen as linked by editors, who remark on the 57

proliferation of seasonal and horticultural imagery and on the saturation of these metaphors with what Stephen Booth calls “the unexploited relevance to sexual love.” It is clear that Shakespeare is drawing on a rich medical, natural historical, and poetic tradition that con ﬂ ates descriptions of human reproduction with the fecundity of the natural world. The “proud lap” of sonnet 98 that produces the “lily’s white” and “the deep vermilion in the rose” refers most obviously to a hollow in the land that shelters and nurtures the ﬂ owers growing there, but “lap” just as frequently referred to the female pudendum. In sonnet 95, shame hides likes a canker in the rose, and in sonnet 67, the rose is again likened to the young man’s blush, as if its appearance in his cheek testified not only to the surge of blood, but also to a vocabulary of affect and erotic possibility. Flowers do not function in the sonnets in any kind of simple analogic way. Rather, they infiltrate, expressing through color, scent, and emotional valence the intimacy of the body’s inner psychic and imaginative life. Sonnet 67 is especially pointed in its invocation of painting’s counterfeit color: Ah wherefore with infection should he live And with his presence grace impiety That sin by him advantage should achieve, And lace itself with his society? Why should false painting imitate his cheek, And steal dead seeing of his living hue? Why should poor beauty indirectly seek Roses of shadow, since his rose is true? Why should he live, now nature bankrout is, Beggared of blood to blush through lively veins? Shakespeare’s use of “infection” in the sonnet’s first line activates its root in the Latin inficere , to stain or taint. The poem is thus structured around the 58

sense of infection as both dye and contagion, with this doubleness simultaneously figuring the duplicity of cosmetic counterfeiting and suggesting that painting contaminates or infects nature. Sonnet 67’s imaging of painting as a theft of the young man’s storehouse of color, as a “beggar[ing] of blood to blush through lively veins,” sets up an apparent contest between nature and artifice that aligns nature with life and painting with mortality, a monitory comment for those who sought to halt time through artifice. The play of color as a correspondence between the body’s appearance and its inner gendered or psychic nature is central to the treatment of color in sonnet 20, “A woman’s face, with nature’s own hand painted.” The young man is described as “A man in hue all hues in his controlling,” a line that has many interpretations, but whose interest for my purposes lies in the play between color as an involuntary revelation of interior thought and hue as an appearance that can be controlled or used to reveal an inner process that is feigned. The “living hue” of sonnet 67 that “blush[es] through lively veins” offers a more conventional representation of this humoral commerce, but in sonnet 20 the young man’s ability to manage its ebbs and ﬂ ows implies a camou ﬂ aging of somatic signs that would seem to master the vulnerability that erotic desire confers upon the subject. If “hue” refers to complexion, then to control the expression of color on the body’s surface suggests a disruption of correspondence between face and mind,an intervention into and manipulation of the natural order. The trope of poetic invention as childbirth relies in part on the early modern idea of a sympathetic linkage between womb and brain, although the transposition of this conjunction to a male body is a function of metaphor. The dark innerness of the mind is the matrix of poetic creation, registered externally in the “black ink” of composition and more fully in such sonnets as 27: Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed, 59

The dear repose for limbs with travel tired, But then begins a journey in my head To work my mind, when body’s work’s expired. For then my thoughts, from far where I abide, Intend a jealous pilgrimage to thee, And keep my drooping eyelids open wide, Looking on darkness which the blind do see. Save that my soul’s imaginary sight Presents thy shadow to my sightless view, Which like a jewel hung in ghastly night, Makes black night beauteous, and her old face new. Lo thus by day my limbs, by night my mind For thee, and for myself, no quiet find. The sonnet traces a movement of progressive interiority: the speaker retires to bed, and the rhyme accentuates the further retreat to the “head” and then to its inside, the mind. Looking into darkness, the speaker calls on the powers of the imagination, which summon the beloved in his shadowed form. This topography of the imaginary is a landscape of darkness and interiority that presages the dark lady sonnets, both in its exploration of night and in the mind’s desiring capacity to see black night’s “beauteous,” rather than its “ghastly” aspect. Whereas Joel Fineman contrasts the young man sonnets with those that invoke the dark lady, juxtaposing vision and language, sameness and difference, the interiority of sonnet 27 aligns it much more closely with the dark lady sonnets, bound together as they are through their common representation of sightlessness and blackness. Darkness is gendered in so far as it is associated with the interiorized female reproductive organs 60

and their unruly workings, which are frequently both demonized and celebrated as a matrix of uncontrollable creativity. Yet this gendering extends by analogy to the soul’s “imaginary sight,” which evokes not only the power that the imagination had to imprint the developing fetus, but also the generalized vision of desire and its creative manifestation in poetry. If color both adorns and constitutes the ornamental exterior, it also figures the inscrutable interior, whether of the cryptic womb or the black mind with its imaginary power, the sightless view behind the eyelids, the vision of the imagination. In this interpretation, the colors of the spectrum are not contrasted with blackness. Rather, colors exist in darkness, a language of the passions, sexuality, and the unconscious, a world that subtends, participates in, and also continually escapes the regulations of symbolic language CONCLUSION Having studied W.Shakespeare sonnets and his creative activity we came to the last conclusion. Shakespeare was very famous for his sonnets, especially plays, tragedies. While studying his sonnets I understand that his sonnets were dedicated to the young man and the dark lady. Shakespeare’s most popular works are sonnets and a few of them, such as sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day), sonnet 116 (Let me not to the marriage 61

of true minds) and other sonnets have become the most widely-read poems in all of English literature. Although love is the overarching theme of the sonnets, there are three specific underlying themes (1) the brevity of life, (2) the transience of beauty and (3) the trappings of desire. The first two of these underlying themes are the focus of the early sonnets addressed to the young man (in particular Sonnets 1-17) where the poet argues that having children to carry on one’s beauty is the only way to conquer the ravages of time. When choosing a sonnet to analyze it is beneficial to explore the theme as it relates to the sonnets around. Considering one or two sonnets in detail discuss Shakespeare’s explanation of the experience of writing Shakespeare has written over a thousand sonnets and has grown in experience after every one. In many of his sonnets he describes how the voice of the verse can save you from the clutches of death and preserve your life forever. Shakespeare’s sequence of 154 sonnets should be read together because they interlock and create a narrative. The story revolves around the poet’s relationship with his two muses – a young man with whom he is infatuated and then later a “dark lady” The muses are used to break down the sonnets into three sequences, as follow 1. The Fair Youth sonnets (1-126) 2. The Dark Lady sonnets (127-152) 3. The Greek sonnets (153-154) In my opinion his sonnets are very famous for their unique.Understanding the significance of sonnet can help you strenghten close reading analytical skills,build a better appreciation for poetry,and derive more meaning from your reading.The sonnet is a significant form of poetry with a set structure. It is difficult to appreciate today how important Shakespeare’s sonnets were.At the time of writing,the Petrarchan sonnet form was extremely 62

popular and predictable!They focused on unotainable love in a very conventional way;but Shakespeare’s sonnets managed to stretch the strictly obeyed conventions of sonnet writing into new areas. Shakespeare therefore paved the way for modern romantic poetry.The sonnets remained relatively unpopular until Romanticism really kicked in during the nineteenth century.It was then that the Shakespeare sonnets were revisited and their literary importance secured. His sonnets are translated into Uzbek and read with great interest. Shakespeare's sonnets occupy a unique place in the Shakespearian heritage, because they are his only lyrical pieces, the only things he has written about himself. By reading between the lines of the sonnets, we may see a tragedy in Shakespeare's life, a tragedy that he might not have fully understood himself. Despite the author's intention, we feel that the poet's friend, who is praised so warmly, is a shallow, cruel and petulant man; the dark lady is wicked and lying. Thus, in the sonnets we may see the great misfortune of a genius, who wasted his life and soul for the sake of persons unworthy of him.There is a major theme running through the cycle: the theme of the implacability of Time. How could one triumph over it? The poet gives two answers: the first is: one lives forever in one's children, in one's posterity. The second is: one may achieve immortality if one's features are preserved by art, and particularly in poetry. Scholars and critics have made many attempts to discover all the mysteries of Shakespeare's sonnets, as they may shed light on his life, but generally to no avail. It is important to remember that Shakespeare's sonnets were written at a time when such sequences were fashionable, and thus the sonnets may be more an exercise in literary convention than in autobiography. 63
