Charlotte Bronte  Charlotte Bronte was born on 21 st April 1816. Her father was a clergyman. He worked in the church at Haworth. From 1825 to 1831, Charlotte’s father taught his children at home. In 1831, Charlotte was fifteen years old. She was a pupil at a school called Roe Head. Later she was a teacher at this school. Charlotte’s novels are: The professor, Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1853). Jan Eyre is one of the most popular stories in English. In 1847, people read Jane Eyre and they were surprised. Women didn’t often speak about their hopes and their thoughts. Women didn’t speak to men in this way.www.arxiv.uz

The novel goes through 5 distinct stages: Jane’s childhood at Gateshead, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privation and oppression; her time as a governess of Thomas Hall, where she falls in love with Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family. www.arxiv.uz

Jane Eyre is divided into 38 chapters and most editions are at least 400 pages long. The origial publication was in three volumes, comprising chapters 1 to 15, 16 to 26, and 27 to 38; this was a common publishing format during the 19 century www.arxiv.uz

At Lowood, Jane soon finds that life is hard but she attempts to fit in, and befriends an older girl Helen Burns, who is able to accept her punishment philosophically. During a school inspection by Mr Brocklehurst, Jane accidentally breaks her slate, thereby drawing attention to herself. He then stands her on a stool, brands her a liar and shames her before the entire assembly. www.arxiv.uz

 After 6 years as a student and 2 as a teacher, Jane desides to leave Lowood, like friend and confidante Miss Temple who recently got married. She advised her services as a governess and receives one reply, the housekeeper at Thornfield House. www.arxiv.uz

 Social class  Jane’s ambigious social position-penniless yet recently educated orphan from a good family- leads her to criticise some discrimination based on class, though she makes class discriminations herself. Although she is educated, well-mannered, and relatively sophisticated, she is still a governess, a paid employee (middle class), and therefore relatively powerless. She respectfully defers to Rochester and his guests from the upper class, but she asks Leah, the housenmaid (lower class), to get her a candle rather than get it herself, and has a servant girl when she is school mistress at the small village school in Morton. www.arxiv.uz
