ALLANIYAZ UTENIYAZOV Born on June, 1, 1936 in the village Drujba (“Friendship”) of the Khalkabad region , Karakalpakstan, in the farmer’s family. In 1962 he graduated with excellence from the English department of the Foreign Languages Faculty of Karakalpak State Teacher- Training Institute. When a student he showed unusual abilities picking up during each cotton campaign over 15-16 tons of cotton. After the graduation from the Institute, during 1962 - 2002 he worked as an English teacher for the secondary school №4 of the Nukus region. He brought up a son and two daughters. Since 1954 he had been engaged in the charity building without payment houses for poor families, invalid, sick and old people during his summer vacation. During his life Allaniyaz Uteniyazov built personally 40 houses, 2 schools, 2 kindergartens for 30 seats, 2 hospitals, 1 library. In 2000 he planted trees within the area of 15 hectares of land. For his merits before the native land A.Uteniyazov was awarded with the degrees «the National teacher of Uzbekistan», «the Distinguished worker of the Public Education of Karakalpakstan», «the Selectioner of Uzbekistan» as well as «the Hero of Labor». Three documentary films were made about this person some time ago. The achievements he got had been brought into the Guinness’s “Records Book.” In 2001 Uteniyazov was conferred a degree “the Hero of Uzbekistan.” www.arxiv.uz

Born on May, 5, 1929 in the village Azat of the Chimbay region, Karakalpakstan. The father of the future poet was repressed and did not return, his mother Khanbibi brought up two sons and four daughters. At the age of 13 Ibragim Yusupov started to work . Having graduated in 1949 from Karakalpak State Teacher- Training Institute he teaches here up to 1962 the theory of literature. Besides, during 1961-1962 he works as an editor for the journal «Amu-Darya». In 1962-1965 I.Yusupov is a scientific secretary, in 1965-1980 y. – a member of the Union of the Writers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, in 1980-1988 – chief editor for the newspaper “Erkin Karakalpakstan” , in 1988-1994 – a member of the Peace Committee, in 1994-2000 – an employee of the Culture and Education Center of Karakalpakstan. He is the national poet of Uzbekistan and Karakalpakstan, the author of the National Anthem of the Republic ofKarakalpakstan . His poems had been translated into several languages. Born in 1938 in the Kungrad region, Karakalpakstan. Graduated from Karakalpak State Teacher-Training Institute. At present she is a deputy of Oliy Majlis, a member of the Uzbek Senate. Born on December, 12, 1948 in the Karauzyak region, Karakalpakstan. Having graduated in 1972 from Karakalpak State Teacher-Training Institute he started working in the archaeological sector of the N.Davkaraev Research Institute of History, Language and Literature at the Karakalpak Branch of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences . In 1974-1977 he is on scientific trial first at Lomonosov Moscow State University , and then- at the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1981-1984 he is in post- graduate school, in 1996 he obtains his Candidate’s degree . Since 2000 to the present G.Khojaniyazov has been leading the archaeological department of the Science Academy. He is the author of 130 scientific, more than 100 scientific-research works published in Uzbekistan and abroad in different languages. Among the works: “The History of the Development of Fortification of Ancient Khoresm” (1981г . ) «The Traditional-Burial Monuments of Karakalpaks of the XVII-XIX-th centuries on the materials of the Grave Krantaw» (2005 г.); “Dawkeshen-Vazir» (1997 г.); “The Military Architec-GAYRATDIN KHOJANIYAZOV ture of Ancient Khoresm of the VI-th century B.C. – the IV-th century A.D.” (2006) and others. For the significant contribution in the science Gayratdin Khojaniyazov was awarded in honor of the 10-th anniversary of the Uzbek Independence with the order “Independence of Uzbe- kistan” ( 2001 г.) and in 2003 year – with the order “Hero of Labor.” In 2008 he was conferred a degree “the Hero of Uzbekistan.” www.arxiv.uz

TULEPBERGEN KAYIPBERGENOV, WRITER AND NATIONAL HERO, DIES AT 81 Uzbek and Karakalpak literature suffered a grievous loss. Hero of Uzbekistan, a famous writer Tulepbergen Kaipbergenov died at 81. Tulepbergen Kaipbergenov was born in 1929 in Kegeyli region of Karakalpakstan. He began his career in 1947 as school teacher. After graduating from Karakalpakstan State Pedagogical Institute, he devoted his long creative and organizational development activities to Karakalpak national press, working as editor-in-chief of the Youth of Karakalpakstan newspaper, director of the Karakalpakstan publishing house, and editor-in-chief of the Soviet Karakalpakstan newspaper, chairman of the Broadcasting and Television of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, deputy chairman of the State Committee on printing and book trade. Since 1980, T. Kaipbergenov conducted fruitful activities as a Chairman of the Writers’ Union of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, greatly contributing to the development of Karakalpak literature and arts as well as education of young poets and writers. He also was actively involved in community work, being elected several times as a deputy to Jokargy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Nukus City Kengash. In his more than half a century of literary activity, Tulepbergen Kaipbergenov had come a long and meaningful career. In his works he sang of history, today’s life, national values and traditions of the people of Karakalpakstan. He created such stories and novels, like “Hello, teacher”, “Ice drop”, “Registrar”, “Karakalpak girl”, “Mamanbiy”, “Unhappy,” “Lost” trilogy “Karakalpak poem,” His works took rightful place in treasurer of our literature. Most of these works have been translated into many languages and won several prestigious literary awards. In the journalistic presentations of recent years of the famous writer, he emphasized the theme of strengthening the spiritual foundations of our independence, the mapping process of fundamental transformation and renovation carried out at Karakalpak ground, chanting creative work of our magnanimous people and drew public attention to the problem of the Aral Sea. Kaipbergenov’s hard work in the development of our literature was duly appreciated by the state. He was given the honorary titles of “People’s Writer of Karakalpakstan” and “People’s writer of Uzbekistan”. He was awarded the “Shuhrat,” orders “Dustlik” and “El-yurt Khurmatu. Kayipbergenova was awarded the highest award of the motherland – title “Hero of Uzbekistan.” The memory of the famous writer and public figure Tulepbergenov Kaipbergenove will remain in our hearts forever. www.arxiv.uz

Sharof Rashidovich Rashidov (6 November [ O.S. 24 October] 1917 - 31 October 1983) was a Communist Party leader in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic and a CPSU Central Committee Politbureau candidate member between 1961 and 1983. Born the day before the Russian Revolution to a poor peasant family in Jizzakh , in what would be the Uzbek SSR , Sharof Rashidov worked as a teacher, journalist and editor for a Samarkand newspaper. He returned home in 1942 with wounds suffered on the German front in World War 2 . He became head of the Uzbekistan Writers Union in 1949, and was elected to the post of Chairman of the Praesidium of the Uzbek Supreme Soviet in 1950. In 1959, he became First Secretary of the Uzbek Communist Party, a post he held to his death in 1983.In the Soviet Union his name became synonymous with corruption , nepotism and the Great Cotton Scandal of the late Brezhnev period . As orders from Moscow to grow more and more and more cotton spiraled in, the Uzbek government responded by reporting miraculous growth in land irrigated and harvested, and record improvements in production and efficiency. Today it would seem that most of these records were falsified. The Uzbek leadership used these exaggerated figures to transfer substantial amounts of wealth from central Soviet funds into Uzbekistan. When this was discovered by Andropov , Radhidov committed suicide. SHAROF RASHIDOV During the decade following the death of Rashidov, Moscow attempted to regain the central control over the Uzbek SSR, which had weakened in the previous decade. In 1986, it was announced that almost the entire party and government leadership of the republic had conspired in falsifying cotton production figures. A massive purge of the Uzbek leadership was carried out, with prosecutors brought in from Moscow, leading to widespread arrests, executions, and suicides. It may never be know how high the corruption extended, as Brezhnev’s own son-in-law, Yuri Churbanov was implicated in the affair. In the rest of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan became synonymous with corruption even though such corruption was widespread throughout the whole Union. After Uzbekistan independence, Rashidov re-emerged as a national hero. He is seen in Uzbekistan as having been a strong leader who found a way to cleverly defy Moscow and "beat the system” while managing to create a situation where Uzbekistan became quite autonomous of central control www.arxiv.uz

Heroes from Uzbekistan, Hungary, Jordan, Mauritania, Brazil, Burundi, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton today acknowledged six international activists from Uzbekistan, Hungary, Jordan, Mauritania, Brazil, and Burundi, along with one from the United States, as 2010 Heroes in the Fight Against Modern Slavery, at the release of the U.S. State Department's 10th annual "Trafficking in Persons Report". Published by the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons to assess efforts of governments to combat trafficking in persons, this comprehensive worldwide report encourages partnership and increased determination in the fight against forced labor, sexual exploitation, and modern-day slavery. The 2010 report ranks 177 nations, including a first-time ranking of the United States. The six international Heroes are in the United States June 13-19 to highlight their work and engage with professional counterparts and the media under the auspices of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Heroes are also attending briefings with members of the Diplomatic Corps and of nongovernmental organizations. On Tuesday, June 15, at 12:30 p.m., the seven heroes will be honored at a reception on Capitol Hill with Members of Congress, hosted by the Helsinki Commission. In New York City, the Heroes delegation will visit the United Nations and other organizations engaged in combating human trafficking worldwide. On Wednesday, June 16, at 10:00 a.m., the Heroes will join Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca, who leads the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, in a press briefing at the State Department's Foreign Press Center. At 1:15 p.m., they will attend a panel discussion titled "Hidden in Plain Sight: The News Media's Role in Exposing Human Trafficking," hosted by the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University. Ambassador CdeBaca will deliver keynote remarks and former ABC News correspondent Lynn Sherr will moderate this panel, to be held at the Economic and Social Council Chamber of the United Nations. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs fosters mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through international educational, cultural, and professional exchanges.
