In the languages compared the typical functions of the adjective are those of attribute and predicative. The adjective as an attribute: Eng: I have brought him an interesting book. Uzb: Мен унга қизиқарли китоб олиб келдим. 4. The adjective as a predicative Eng: The book was interesting. Uzb: Китоб қизиқарли эди. According to their structure English and Uzbek adjectives may be: 1. simple: Engl: red, good, hot, cold, slow Uzb: оқ, яхши, секин, совуқ, ёмон, тинч; 2. derivative: Eng: passive, talented, social, snowy Uzb: кучли, амалий, актив, кучсиз, чопқир 3. compound: Engl: big-eyed, deaf-mute, eagle-eyed, never-ending Uzb: хушбўй, ватанпарвар, учбурчакли, одамсимон On the base of their meaning adjectives are grouped into qualita tive and relative classes. Qualitative adjectives express the property of nouns by means of special words denoting color, size, skill, mental or moral attribute, distinctive character, characteristic trait etc.

Eng: good, wide, small, thin, thick, fat, clever, green, blue, red, lit tle, big, dry, pale, glad, happy, hot, sick, ill, long, fluent, blunt, sharp, high, small, right, wrong etc. Uzb: катта, кенг, сариқ, семиз, қари, тез, тенг, тентак, текис, тетик, тик, тинч, тирик, тортинчоқ, аччиқ, сассиқ, ширин, мазали, бемаза, равшақчўзинчоқ, ифлос, ёруғ etc. Qualitative adjectives are characterized by the following common features 2 . 1. Qualitative adjectives have the degrees of comparison: Positive Comparative Superlative English sweet sweeter sweetest High higher highest Happy happier happiest Uzbek Кенг кенгроқ Энг кенг Қора қорароқ Энг қора Relative adjectives express properties characterizing an object through its reference to another object. Eng: excessive, excitable, exclamatory, frontless, golden, Indian, Chinese, individual, posthumous, fundamental, risky, impressionable, homeless, floppy, gold, silk, silky, mental etc. Uzb: тушунарли, турли, туганмас, таълимсиз, ташландиқ, те- мирбетон, темирдай, сўзсиз, терма, қақраган, тақлидий, тишли, тойдек, текин, одамсимон, тонгги, тошкўнгил, ибратли, ижодий, сеҳрли, субутли, сурранг, севинчли etc. Relative adjectives differ according to their meaning. They denote properties of nouns related to: 1) inanimate nouns which are concrete or abstract: a diamond ring, бриллиант узук etc. 2 Yusupov U’. 2) animate nouns expressing persons, animals, birds: eagle eye, товуқ мия etc. 3) animate and inanimate nouns expressing locality or position: field flowers, дала гуллари . 4) animate and inanimate nouns expressing time: winter wheat, кузги буғдой etc. 5) verbal adjectives expressing action or state: flying machine, Уйқудаги малика etc. In both languages many nouns can function as nouns and as ad jectives. The category of degrees of comparison expresses different de grees of qualities of things and persons denoted by nouns. It is repre sented by the system of three-member opposition: positive, compara tive and superlative degrees. The positive degree is morphologically unmarked. It is the primary form of the adjective and it expresses simple quality if the thing or the person expressed by the subject is not compared with anything: He is a clever boy. She is beautiful . In English if it is compared with something, it denotes equal quality of those things compared: David is as clever as Mike. David is as stupid as Mike . The comparative degree is morphologically marked in both lan guages. In English it expresses a higher or less degree of quality of the thing expressed by the subject in relation to the thing with which it is compared. Depending on the length of the adjective it is formed by two ways: 1) by adding the affix - er to short adjectives: long-longer, cold-colder etc. 2) by putting the words more or less before long adjectives: beautiful - more beautiful beautiful - less beautiful In Uzbek it is formed by adding the affix - роқ to the adjective: узун - узун роқ чиройли - чиройли роқ The affix -роқ means a (little) bit more or a (little) bit less : Мэри Аннадан чиройлироқ

Mary is a (little) bit more beautiful than Ann. Бу хона анови хонадан кичкинароқ . This room is a (little) bit smaller than that one. In Uzbek the positive degree is functionally equal to the positive and comparative degrees. Compare: David is clever = Давид ақлли . David is clever than Mike = Давид Майкдан ақлли . The superlative degree expresses the highest (least) degree of the quality denoted by the adjective stem with the affix -est and the struc tures most + adj. and least + adj. in English and the structure энг + ad ; jn Uzbek: Mary is the most beautiful girl = Мэри энг чиройли қиз. David is the cleverest boy = Давид энг ақлли бола. There are some adjectives in English whose comparative and su perlative degrees are formed by changing the root positive comparative superlative good better best bad worth worst little less Least much more most many more most far farther farthest further Furthest old older Oldest elder eldest These differences cause a lot of interlanguage interferences when Uzbek students speak English. 2 The functional analysis of the complementation features of the simple adjectives in different discourse Adjectival heads can take as post-head complements finite and non-finite clauses or prepositional phrases which relate the attribute to a fact, a situation, a process or a circumstance and so tell us how the attribute is to be understood. All adjectives which can take complements indicate the speaker’s or writer’s stance with respect to the proposition stated in the complement. They comprise three semantic types: epistemic ( sure, certain , etc.), affective ( glad, sorry , etc.) and

evaluative ( right, wrong , etc.). Adjectives which take embedded that -complement clauses indicate the speaker’s or writer’s stance with respect to what is expressed in the complement 3 . Semantically, they fall into two main types: 1 degrees of certainty , such as: sure, certain, positive, convinced 2 affective meanings , such as: glad, sorry, happy, sad, afraid, grateful, pleased, amazed, annoyed This structure relates the adjectival quality to a factual complement and is realised by a finite clause introduced optionally by that : We are sure (that) he is innocent. We are proud (that) you are so grad. After some adjectives of emotive or modal meaning, such as anxious, willing, eager, insistent, determined, essential , the non-factual auxiliary should (in Br E), or the subjunctive (especially in Am E), can be used in the that -clause to suggest a present or future action. An indicative is used by some speakers, as in 3 . 1 The public is anxious that the truth ( should ) be known . 2 We are not willing that justice ( should ) be forgotten . 3 Bill’s wife is insistent that he give / gives up smoking. The complement can also be realised by a wh -clause: I am not quite clear what you mean . Extraposed clausal subject: In the following type of sentence, the second clause does not function as a complement of the preceding adjective, but as extraposed subject, replaced by it in the main clause. Compare the extraposed with the non-extraposed clauses. I just think it’s unfortunate that all these rumours have circulated . That all these rumours have circulated is unfortunate. The adjective in this construction expresses an evaluative attitude, (usually the speaker’s) towards the content of the following clause. But because the construction has anticipatory it as subject, the stance or attitude is not directly attributed to the speaker or some other person, as occurs with complement clauses, whose subjects are referential pronouns or NGs. Adjectives which occur in structures with anticipatory it tend to be more impersonal than those taking a complement clause. They include: advisable , evident , (im)possible , (un) likely , noticable , (un)typical , important , obligatory , curious , obvious , shocking , surprising , true , vital Certain adjectives can occur in both constructions, however: clear, certain, sure . This Adjectival Group structure is used to describe the relation between an attribute and a process or situation. The attribute and process/situation both refer to the same Subject in examples (a–g) below: (a) The adjective evaluates the process performed by the subject: You are kind to visit me . She must be clever to have won the first prize . (b) The adjective describes the manner of performing the process: The Minister was quick to reject the accusation . You are very slow to give your opinion, aren’t you ? (c) The adjective expresses an emotion caused by the process. The subject of the main clause is also the implied subject of the to -clause: Everyone was sorry to hear about the accident . We were all delighted to receive your invitation . (d) The adjective expresses an attitude or state concerning the process: I am not willing to believe that story . The police are powerless to take action in this matter . (e) The adjective expresses a property of the subject: Mountain water is not always safe to drink . Are these pamphlets free to take away (or to be taken away )?

(f) The adjective forms part of a lexical auxiliary ( be sure to, be likely to be bound to ) in a VG. It denotes a degree of certainty or the tendency of the process to occur. The subject is a ‘raised subject’: He is sure to arrive late . It is bound to rain . She is likely to get angry . I am apt to forget details . (g) The adjective evaluates the process realised by an - ing clause or a to -inf: You were foolish going out / to go out without an overcoat . He must have been crazy driving / to drive as fast as that . The above examples refer to processes performed by the Subject of the clause, that is, the Carrier of the Attribute. The following ones refer to processes not performed by the Subject: (h) The adjective does not refer to the Subject: Smoking is hard/ difficult to give up. This sentence does not mean that smoking is difficult, but that to give up smoking is difficult. Structurally, it is a ‘raised object’, that is, the implied object of the to clause to give up smoking is raised to subject. (i) In other cases, the Subject may possess the attribute and at the same time be the prepositional Object of the to-infinitive verb: This paper is thin to write on . The Atlantic is cold to swim in. Prepositional phrase complements are not usually obligatory (though a few are), but they are all controlled by particular adjectives. The complement completes the meaning with respect to the adjective. Especially in conversation, where speakers can assume a knowledge of what has been said, it is frequently unnecessary to add a complement. We can say I was angry, we were anxious, everyone was delighted without specifying the reason. In writing, however, we often need to make the motivation more specific. A number of adjectives, including accustomed (to), conscious (of) and prone (to) (with the appropriate senses) require a complement. Several adjectives control more than one preposition, for instance good at maths, good for your health, good with children; similar to mine, similar in shape. We here offer a small representative selection of

everyday examples. These are grouped according to the preposition and the types of meaning conveyed by the adjective 4 . 1 adjective + about or + at is used for emotional reaction to something: angry about what I said; annoyed about the delay mad about music concerned about his safety 2 adjective + at has two meanings: (a) emotional reaction to something or someone, and (b) an ability: (a) happy at the prospect alarmed at the news mad at my sister indignant at the accusation (b) clever at getting what he wants bad at letter-writing good at mathematics hopeless at remembering names. Other adjectives used with at: (a) pleased, annoyed (b) brilliant, terrible, adept, skilled, marvellous 3 adjective + by (with adjectives derived from past participles and passive in meaning): amused by the anecdote puzzled by the question hurt by her remarks worried by their failure to return 4 adjective + for means the value the adjective has for something or someone: anxious for success hopeful for the future good for the health responsible for their welfare 5 adjective + from has two meanings: (a) separation and distancing; (b) effect–cause: (a) remote from civilisation different from everyone else (b) sleepless from anxiety tired from overworking 6 adjective + in is used for an existing or resulting state: dressed in white slow in reacting deep in a book lost in thought 4 Ilyish B.A. The structure of Modern English. 7 adjective + of is used for (a) mental state in terms of the antagonist or process; (b) mental state in terms of the protagonist; (c) containment: (a) afraid of wild animals capable of great concentration (b) kind of you stupid of him (c) full of enthusiasm sick of it all The (b) sequence occurs in clauses beginning It is + adjective + extraposed subject: It is kind of you to take such trouble. It was stupid of him to lose the keys. 8 adjective + on is used for dedication, dependence or aim: keen on sport intent on divorce dependent on other people set on studying abroad 9 adjective + to means (a) mental state or attitude related to a phenomenon; (b) equivalence, similarity or comparison: (a) opposed to innovation kind to old people; accustomed to hardship (b) similar to the others equal to half a kilo 10 adjective + with can be (a) emotional reaction or physical state due to a cause, or (b) property or ability: (a) fed up with the weather pale with fear (b) skilful with his hands good with children Note that 2(b) describes ability in relation to the task; 10(b) describes ability in relation to the tools or raw material. 11 adjective + beyond means to an extreme degree (with non-count nouns): cruel beyond endurance injured beyond recovery The fact that a PP occurs after an adjective does not necessarily mean that it complements the adjective; it may be functioning as a clausal or stance Adjunct: Complement: He is brilliant at maths . Clausal Adjunct: He is brilliant in many respects . Stance Adjunct: In my opinion , he’s a brilliant mathematician. 3 The structural analysis of the derived adjectives used in different discourse

Derived adjectives are formed by the addition of derivational suffixes to free or bound stems. They usually form analytical comparatives and superlatives by means of the qualifiers more and most. Some of the more important suffixes which form derived adjectives are: -able added to verbs and bound stems, denoting quality with implication of capacity, fitness or worthness to be acted upon; -able is often used in the sense of "tending to", "given to", "favouring", "causing", "able to" or "liable to". This very common suffix is a live one which can be added to virtually any verb thus giving rise to many new coinages. As it is the descendant of an active derivational suffix in Latin, it also appears as a part of many words borrowed from Latin and French. Examples formed from verbs: remarkable, adaptable, conceivable, drinkable, eatable, regrettable, understandable, etc.; examples formed from bound stems: capable, portable, viable. The unproductive variant of the suffix -able is the suffix -ible (Latin -ibilis, -bilis), which we find in adjectives Latin in origin: visible, forcible, comprehensible, etc.; -ible is no longer used in the formation of new words. -al , -ial (Lat. -alls, French -al, -el) denoting quality "belonging to", "pertaining to", "having the character of", "appropriate to", e. g.: elemental, bacterial, automnal, fundamental, etc. The suffix -al added to nouns and bound stems (fatal, local, natural, national, traditional, etc.) is often found in combination with -ic, e. g.: biological, botanical, juridical, typical, etc. -ish —Germanic in origin, denoting nationality, quality with the meaning "of the nature of", "belonging to", "resembling" also with the sense "somewhat like", often implying contempt, derogatory in force, e. g.: Turkish, bogish, outlandish, whitish, wolfish. -y — Germanic in origin, denoting quality "pertaining to", "abounding in", "tending or inclined to", e.g.: rocky, watery, bushy, milky, sunny, etc. In this category, prefixes predominate. The only suffix of note is -ish , meaning ‘somewhat X’, as in greenish, smallish, remotish , ‘rather remote’. By

contrast, the prefix un- meaning ‘not’ is extremely widespread: for example, unhappy, unsure, unreliable, undiscovered . Because it is so common, most dictionaries do not attempt to list all un- adjectives. This does not mean, however, that un- can be prefixed to all adjectives quite freely; we do not find, for example, ‘ ungood ’ with the meaning ‘bad’ (though George Orwell included that word in the Newspeak vocabulary devised for Nineteen Eighty-Four ). Another negative prefix is in- , with allomorphs indicated by the variant spellings il- , ir- and im- , as in intangible, illegal, irresponsible and impossible . It is more restricted than un- , largely for historical reasons. For the present, it is worth noting the existence of pairs of more or less synonymous adjectives, one of which is negated with un- and the other with in- or one of its allomorphs: eatable/uneatable edible/inedible readable/unreadable legible/illegible lawful/unlawful legal/illegal touchable/untouchable tangible/intangible Such examples confirm that the use of in- is lexically restricted. As the negative counterpart of edible, unedible sounds possible, especially if the speaker has limited education and has not encountered, or has momentarily forgotten, the form inedible . However, ‘ ineatable ’ as the counterpart of eatable is not a form that any English speaker would spontaneously use. Some of the processes that derive adjectives from verbs straddle the divide between derivation and inflection in a way that we have not yet encountered. However, such forms can also be adjectives: a. a not very interesting book b. The party-goers sounded very drunk . c. The car seemed more damaged than the lamp-post. The modifier very and the comparative construction ( more … than ) show that interesting , drunk and damaged are adjectives here, not forms of the verb lexemes interest, drink , and damage . (Notice that very cannot modify verbs, so one cannot say *That book very interested me .) As for drunk , its status as belonging to a distinct lexeme here is confirmed by its special meaning (‘intoxicated through drinking alcohol’), not predictable from the meaning of the verb drink (‘swallow

liquid’). Further suffixes that commonly form adjectives from verbs, with their basic meanings, are: 1. -able ‘able to be Xed’: breakable , readable , reliable , watchable 2. -ent , -ant ‘tending to X’: repellent , expectant , conversant 3. -ive ‘tending to X’: repulsive , explosive , speculative Expectations derived from these basic meanings can, as usual in derivation, be overridden; for example, conversant does not mean ‘tending to converse’. We have already encountered -able in (1), where the variant, or allomorph, -ible is also illustrated. What is striking about the –ible words in (2) is that their bases, although they have clearly identifiable verbal meanings such as ‘ eat’, ‘read’ and ‘ touch’ , are bound rather than free. Some of these bound verb roots appear in a number of derived lexemes, such as the aud- root that occurs in (in) audible, audition, audience and auditory. Suffixes that form adjectives from nouns are more numerous. Here are some: - ful , e.g. joyful , hopeful , helpful, meaningful - less , e.g. joyless , hopeless , helpless , meaningless - al , e.g. original, normal , personal , national - ish , e.g. boyish , loutish , waspish , selfish As will be seen, adjectives in -ful and -less tend to come in pairs, although the correspondence is not exact: we have slothful but not ‘ slothless ’ , and penniless but not ‘ penniful ’ . This confirms again that, even when the meaning of a potential word may be easily guessable (a ‘ slothless’ person would be hardworking, and a ‘ penniful’ person would be well off), the existence of the word is not guaranteed. Adjectives are derived from nouns by means of the suffixes listed below. On the use of nouns in apposition with quasi-adjectival functions, -al - 'pertaining to ..., characteristic of ..., etc.' e.g. natura 'nature' > natural veneno 'poison' > venenal 'poison, of poison' The most general and unspecific adjectival suffix. The variant -ar is to be preferred with nouns containing l ; e.g. bussola 'compass' > bussolar '(of the) compass.' The type interrogatorial may be construed as a derivative from

interrogatorio 'interrogatory' or (with the suffix variant -ial ) from interrogator . In patterns of this sort the variant -ial is to be preferred. -an - 'pertaining to ...'; esp. 'native of ...' e.g. urbe 'town' > urban Mohammed > mohammedan 'Mohammedan' Africa > african 'African' Tolstoi > tolstoian 'Tolstoyan' Asia > asian 'Asian' Used with names of places and persons. In the case of place names not ending in -a or -o as also of all names of persons, the euphonic variant -ian is to be preferred; e.g.: Zamenhof > zamenhofian 'Zamenhofian'; but also Canada > canadian . The corresponding noun form is -ano ( -iano ). -ari - 'pertaining to ... , consisting of ... , etc.' e.g.: legenda 'legend' > legendari , 'legendary' fragmento 'fragment' > fragmentari 'fragmentary' vestimento 'garment' > vestimentari 'garment' Functions as adjective corresponding to nouns in -ario, -ero and -iero . The variants -er and -ier may be used to correspond to nouns in -ero and -iero respectively. -ate - 'having a... or ...s' e.g. barba 'beard' > barbate 'bearded' vertebra > vertebrate ; anello 'ring' > anellate 'ringed' Coincides with past participle, in adjectival use, of verbs in -ar ; e.g.: anellar 'to ring' > anellate 'ringed.' - esc - 'like, similar to, or characteristic of a ...' e.g.: gigante 'giant' > gigantesc 'gigantic' elephante 'elephant' > elephantesc 'elephantlike' 'in the manner or style of ...' e.g: arabe 'Arab' > arabesc 'arabesque' Chopin > chopinesc 'Chopinesque' -ese - 'pertaining to ...'; esp. 'native to..., of ...'; e.g. China > chinese 'Chinese' Ural 'Urals' > uralese 'Uralian' Used with names of places. For nouns in –ese

-ic - 'of, pertaining to ..., characterized by ...' e.g. cubo 'cube' > cubic ; nostalgia > nostalgic Bosporo 'Bosporus' > bosporic 'of the Bosporus' -ifere - 'bearing, producing, yielding' e.g. cono 'cone' > conifere 'coniferous' carbon 'coal' > carbonifere 'carboniferous'; fungo 'fungus' > fungifere 'fungusbearing' -ific - 'making, causing ...' e.g. pace 'peace' > pacific lumine 'light' > luminific 'light-producing' - in - 'of, pertaining to, etc., ...' e.g. alcali [Chem.] > alcalin 'alcaline' can 'dog' > canin 'canine'; mure 'mouse' > murin 'of mice, mouse' Used particularly with names of animals. Adjectives are derived from nouns in the following manner: adjectives denoting plenty are derived from nouns by adding - y ; as, from

" Health, healthy; wealth, wealthy; might, mighty ," etc. Adjectives denoting the matter out of which any thing is made, are derived from nouns by adding - en ; as, from " Oak, oaken; wood, wooden; wool, woollen ," etc. Adjectives denoting abundance are derived from nouns by adding - ful ; as, from "Joy , joyful; sin, sinful; fruit, fruitful ," etc. Adjectives denoting plenty, but with some kind of diminution, are derived from nouns by adding some ; as, from " Light, lightsome; trouble, troublesome; toil, toilsome, " etc. Adjectives denoting want are derived from nouns by adding less ; as, from " Worth, worthless ;" from " care, careless; joy, joyless ," etc. Adjectives denoting likeness are derived from nouns by adding ly ; as, from " Man, manly; earth, earthly; court, courtly ," etc. Some adjectives are derived from other adjectives, or from nouns by adding ish to them; which termination when added to adjectives, imports diminution, or lessening the quality; as, " White, whitish ;" i.e. somewhat white. When added to nouns, it signifies similitude or tendency to a character; as, " Child, childish; thief, thievish ." Some adjectives are formed from nouns or verbs by adding the termination - able ; and those adjectives signify capacity; as, " Answer, answerable; to change, changeable. " There are so many other ways of deriving words from one another, that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to enumerate them. The primitive words of every language are very few; the derivatives form much the greater number. A few more instances only can be given here. Some nouns are derived from other nouns, by adding the terminations – hood or - head , ship , ery , wick, rick, dom, ian, ment , and - age . -IC - There is no particular way to know whether a word will use the - ic or the -ical ending. The suffix - ic comes from French - ique , or Greek - ikos and means “having the nature of”, or “causing something”: academic, algebraic, arithmetic, artistic, athletic, catholic, domestic, dramatic, egoistic, emphatic, energetic, fantastic, geometric, strategic, linguistic, majestic, neurotic, pathetic, pedagogic, phonetic, public, semantic, syntactic, systematic, tragic. He buys classic cars, traditional, old style. His comic verse filled books, artistic comedy.

We listen to classical music, from a cultural (sometimes Greek, Roman, European) source, or 18thC. His comical verse entertained audiences, funny. His economical car was unsound, cheap. Electrical equipment makes our work easier, general, and mass. This is a/an historical moment, worthy of being recorded in history.
