It is common knowledge that teenage is a painful period. Reading books about it might help young adolescents ease the tension in their life. This was proved by the research and poll. Readers of the mid-twentieth century often turned to "the bible of the genera tion" - the book "The catcher in the Rye" by D.Salinger. But there are books written later, in 1980-s and in the early 21 st century which are comparable to that one. Such is Sue Townsend's cycle of books starting from "The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole AGed 13 3/4" written with mild humour and irony and profound psychological insight into the inner world of a teenager (later a young adoles cent). Sue Townsend Sue Townsend was born in Leicester in 1 946. She attended Glen Hills school in the early 50s and then went to South Wigston Secondary Modern for Girls. But she left school when she was 15 and changed jobs several times (so she worked as a shop assistant, garage attendant and in a factory). She got married when she was 18 and had three children. But her husband left her so she brought them up alone. Her writing career started when she was 35 - she won the Thames Playwrightsr Award. Her most famous and best known book is "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole" (1985) - a diary kept by a 13 years old boy - sort of intellectual. The book was so successful that it was followed by a number of sequels such as "The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole" or "The True Confessions of Adrian Mole". She has been famous for other books as well - "The Queen and I" (1991 -. they even made a play according to it), "Rebuilding Conventry" (1988) and "Ghost Children" (1998). Sue Townsend later got married again. In 1999 doctors found out she had diabetes and she slowly began losing her sight. Today she is almost blind. From "THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4" FRIDAY MARCH 13TH The emergency doctor came to my grandma's last night at 11.30 p.m. He diagnosed that I am suffering from acne vulgaris. He said it was so common that it is regarded as a normal state of adolescence. He thought it was highly unlikely that I have got lassa fever because have not been to Africa this year. He told Grandma to take the disinfected sheets off the doors and windows. Grandma said she would like a second opinion. That was when the doctor lost his temper. He shouted in a very loud voice, "The lad has only got a few teenage spots, for Christ's sake!" Grandma said she would complain to the Medical Council but the doctor just laughed and went downstairs and slammed the door. My father came round be fore he went to work and brought my Social Studies homework and the dog. He said that if I was not out of bed when he got home at lunchtime he would thrash me to within an inch of my life. He took my grandma into the kitchen and had a loud talk with her. I heard him saying, 'Things are very bad between me and Pauline, and all we are arguing over now is who doesn't get custody of Adrian.' Surely my father made a mistake. He must have meant who did get custody of me. So the worst has happened, my skin has gone to pot and my parents are split tin g up . SATURDAY MARCH 14TH It is official. They are getting a divorce! Neither of them wants to leave the house so the spare room is being turned into a bedsitter for my father. This could have a very bad effect on me. It could prevent me from being a vet. My mother gave me five pounds this morning and told me not to tell my father. I bought some bio-spot cream for my skin and the new Abba LP.

I rang Mr. Cherry and said I had personal problems and would be unable to work for a few weeks. Mr. Cherry said that he knew that my parents were divorc ing because my father had cancelled my mother's Cosmopolitan. My father gave me five pounds and told me not to tell my mother. 1 spent some of it on buying some purple paper and envelopes so that the BBC will be impressed and read my poems. The rest of it will have to go on Barry Kent and his menaces money. I don't think anybody in the world can be as unhappy as me. If I didn't have my poetry I would be a raving loonie by now. Went out for a sad 1 walk and took Pandora's horse two pounds of cooking apples. Thought of a poem about Blossom. Wrote it down when I got back to the house where I live. BLOSSOM Little Brown Horse Eating apples in a field, Perhaps one day My heart will be healed. I stroke the places Pandora has sat Wearing her jodhpurs and riding hat. Goodbye, brown horse. I turn and retreat, The rain and mud are wetting my feet. By Adrian Mole, aged nearly fourteen I have sent it to the BBC. I marked the envelope "Urgent". SUNDAY MARCH 15 TH The house is very quiet. My father sits in the spare room smoking and my mother sits in the bedroom smoking. They are not eating much. Mr. Lucas has phoned my mother three times. All she says to him is 'not yet, it's too early'. Perhaps he has asked her to go to the pub for a drink and take her mind off her troubles. ' My father has put the stereo in his bedroom. He is playing his Jim Reeves records and staring out of the window. I took him a cup of tea and he said, 'Thanks, son,' in a choked-up voice . My mother was looking at old letters in my father's handwriting when I took her tea in; she said, 'Adrian, what must you think of us?' I said that Rick Lemon, the youth leader, thinks divorce is society's fault. My mother said, 'Bugger soci ety.' 1 washed and ironed my school uniform ready for school tomorrow. I am getting quite good at housework. My spots are so horrific that I can't bear to write about them. I will be the laughing stock at school. I am reading The Man in the Iron Mask. I know exactly how he feels. MONDAY MARCH 16TH Went to school. Found it closed. In my anguish I had forgotten that I am on holiday. Didn't want to go home, so went to see Bert Baxter instead. He said the social worker had been to see him and had promised to get Sabre a new kennel but he can't have a home help. (Bert, not Sabre.) There must have been a full week's washing-up in the sink again. Bert says he saves it for me because I make a good job of it. While I washed up I told Bert about my parents getting a divorce. He said he didn't hold with divorce. He said he was

married for thirty-five miserable years so why should anybody else get away with it? He told me that he has got four children and that none of them come to see him. Two of them are in Australia so they can't be blamed, but I think the other two should be ashamed of themselves. Bert showed me a photograph of his dead wife, it was taken in the days before they had plastic surgery. Bert told me that he was a hostler when he got married (a hostler is somebody doing things with horses) and didn't really notice that his wife looked like a horse until he left to work on the railways. I asked him if he would like to see a horse again. He said he would, so I took him to see Blossom. It took us ages to get there. Bert walks dead slow and he kept having to sit down on garden walls, but we got there eventually. Bert said that Blossom was not a horse, she was a girl pony. He kept patting her and saying 'who's a beauty then, eh?' Then Blossom went for a run about so we sat down on the scrap car, and Bert had a Woodbine and I had a Mars bar. Then we walked back to Bert's house. I went to the shops and bought a packet of Vesta chow mein and a butter scotch Instant Whip for our dinner, so Bert ate a decent meal for once. We watched Pebble Mill at One, then Bert showed me his old horse brushes and photographs of the big house where he worked when he was a boy. He said he was made into a communist when he was there, but he fell asleep before he could tell me why. Came home, nobody was in so I played my Abba records at the highest vol ume until the deaf woman next door banged on the wall. TUESDAY MARCH 17TH St. Patrick's Day. Bank holiday in N. Ireland and Rep. of Ireland. Looked at Big and Bouncy. Measured my 'thing'. It was eleven centimeters. Mr. O'Leary who lives across the road from us was drunk at ten o'clock in the morning! He got thrown out of the butcher's for singing. WEDNESDAY MARCH 18TH My mother and father are both speaking to solicitors. I expect they are fight ing over who gets custody of me. I will be a tug-of-love child, and my picture will be in the newspapers. I hope my spots clear up before then. THURSDAY MARCH 19TH Mr. Lucas has put his house up for sale. My mother says the asking price is thirty thousand pounds!! What will he do with all that money? My mother says he will buy another bigger house. How stupid can you get? If I had thirty thousand pounds I would wander the world having experiences. I wouldn't take any real money with me because I have read that most fo reigners are thieves. Instead I would have three thousand pounds' worth of traveller's cheques sewn into my trousers. Before I set off, I would: a) Send Pandora three dozen red roses. b) Pay a mercenary fifty pounds to duff Barry Kent up. c) Buy the best racing bike in the world and ride it past Nigel's house. d) Order a massive crate of expensive dog food so that the dog is properly fed while I'm away. e) Buy a housekeeper for Bert Baxter. f) Offer my mother and father a thousand pounds (each) to stay together. When I came back from the world I would be tall, brown and full of ironical experiences and Pandora would cry into her pillow at night because of the chance she missed to be Mrs. Pandora Mole. I would qualify to be a vet in record time then I would buy a farmhouse. I would convert one room into a study so that I could have somewhere quiet to be intellectual in. I wouldn't waste thirty thousand pounds on buying a semi-detached house!

FRIDAY MARCH 20TH First day of spring. Full Moon. It is the first day of spring. The council have chopped all the elms down in Elm Tree Avenue. SATURDAY MARCH 21 ST My parents are eating different things at different times, so I usually have six meals a day because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. The television is in my room now because they couldn't decide who it be longs to. I can lie in bed and watch the late-night horror. I am starting to get a bit suspicious about my mother's feelings towards Mr. Lucas. I found a note she had from him; it says: 'Pauline, how much longer? For God's sake come away with me. Yours forever, Bimbo.' Although it was signed 'Bimbo' I know it was from Mr. Lucas because it was written on the back of his red electricity bill. My father should be informed. I have put the note under my mattress next to the Big and Bouncy magazines. GENERATION X AND ETERNAL HUMAN VALUES Every new generation has grown on traditions and culture of the previous ones. This has been interlinking the society, preserving human values and culture of the humanity and has been giving birth to something new. That is the natural cycle. There is the opinion that today eternal human values such as love, friend ship, family, money, etc are reviewed by young people, by the so-called 'genera tion X'. This term was used by the contemporary Canadian writer Douglas Coupland who wrote the book with this title and who has become one of the cult figures in modern English language fiction. Douglas Coupland Douglas Coupland is Canadian, born on a Ca nadian Air Force base near Baden-Baden, Germany, on December 30,1961. In 1965 his family moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he continues to live and work. Coupland has studied art and design in Vancouver, Canada, Milan, Italy and Sapporo, Japan. His first novel, Generation X, was published in March of 1991. Since then he has published nine novels and several non-fiction books in 35 languages and most countries on earth. There are some books that reflect the philosophy of the young: "Microserfs", "Life after God", "Girlfriend in a Coma", "Hey, Nostradamus", Pod", etc. He has written and performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England, and in 2001 resumed his practice as a visual artist, with exhibitions in spaces in North America, Europe and Asia. 2006 marks the premiere of the feature film Everything's Gone Green, his first story written specifically for the screen and not adapted from any previous work. Douglas Coupland is really an amazing contemporary writer; he paints a vivid picture with words like no one else. He really adequately shows generation X. From "MY HOTEL YEAR" Donny was a hustler who lived at the end of the hall in the tiny room next to the bathroom. He was young and friendly, and sometimes would ask me to have dinner with him, but dinner usually turned out to be blue Popsicles, Velveeta cheese and beer in his dingy room where the paint peeled and you could see how many colors the room had been before. The only Technology in the room was a phone. Donhy was always getting stabbed. His skin was beginning to look like an old leather couch at the Greyhound station. When I asked him if he was worried about permanent damage he gave me a guarded look and said, "This is my life, and this is how I live it". He said that stabbing didn't hurt nearly as much as you'd think and that when it happened, "man, when the

blade first digs into you it makes your soul leap out of your body for just a second, like a salmon jump ing out of a river". I do remember him telling me, though, that he was actually getting a little bored with* being stabbed. He said that in the end his big goal was to get shot. This is not a long story. In the end Donny got his fish and he did get shot -over a very stupid drug deal that imploded in China-town parking lot - twice in the back of the head and once in the back. I ended up having to identify the body as nobody knew where his family was or who they were. I guess his salmon jumped out of the river and onto land and the river itself flows on... *** D.Coupland's latest novel, "JPod", is a lethal joyride into today's new breed of technogeeks and published in June 2006. The novel updates "Microserfs" for the age of Google. Ethan Jarlewski and five co-workers whose names start with J are bureaucratically marooned in JPod. JPod is a no-escape architectural limbo on the fringes of a massive Vancouver game design company. The six workers daily confront the forces that define our era: global piracy, boneheaded marketing staff, people smuggling, the rise of China, marijuana grow ops, Jeff Probst, and the ashes of the 1990s financial tech dream. JPod's universe is amoral and shameless. The characters are products of their era even as they're creating it. Everybody in Ethan's life inhabits a moral grey zone. Nobody is exempt, not even his seemingly straitlaced parents or Coupland himself, as read - ers will see. Full of word games, visual jokes and sideways jabs, this book throws a sharp, pointed lawn dart into the heart of contemporary life. JPod is Douglas Coupland at the top of his game. From "JPOD" I slunk into the BoardX meeting where Steve, Gord-O, and staff from the loftiest perches of the food chain were still trying to nail the essence of Jeff the Charismatic Turtle. Prototype turtle sketches were pinned onto a massive cork wall, all of them goofy and teensploitational : sunglasses, baggy pants and (dear God) a terry-cloth sweatband. "Does Jeff the Turtle follow players around the entire time they manipulate their third person?" "Almost. Like Watson is to Sherlock Holmes." "Can you imagine how annoying that would be?" "Maybe the buddy isn't such a good idea." Steve squashed that hope. "It's going to be a buddy. Players will love it." "It's really Poochie-Joins-Itchy-and-Scratchy." "How am I ever going to look somebody who plays Tony Hawk games in the face again?" "Isn't our turtle supposed to be a bit more studly?" "Turtles aren^studly by nature." "What about the turtle they used in the 1950s to pimp the atomic weapons program? He was kind of studly." "No he wasn't and, besides, he's dead." "What?" "Dead. Hanged himself from the side of his posh midtown Manhattan ter-rarium. Left a note saying he couldn't handle the shame of what he'd done. Wrote it on a piece of Bibb lettuce." * * * "Oh God. I feel like a refugee from a Douglas Coupland novel." "That asshole." "Who does he think he is?" "Come on, guys, focus. We've got a major problem on our hands ." The six of us were silent, but for our footsteps. The main corridor's muted plasma TVs blipped out the news and sports, while co-workers in long-sleeved blue and black T- shirts oompah-loompahed in and out of laminate-access doors, elevated walkways, staircases and elevators, their missions inscrutable and squirrelly. It was a rare sunny day. Freakishly articulated sunbeams hi g hli ghted specks of mica in the

hallway's designer granite. They looked like randomized particle events. Mark said, "I can't even think about what just happened in there." John Doe said, "I'd like to do whatever it is people statistically do when con fronted by a jolt of large and bad news." I suggested he ingest five milligrams of Valium and three shots of hard liquor or four glasses of domestic wine. "Really?" "Don't ask me, John. Google it. " "And so I shall." Cowboy had a jones for cough syrup, while Bree fished through one of her many pink vinyl Japanese handbags for lip gloss - phase one of her well-established pattern of pursuing sexual conquest to silence her inner pain . The only quiet mem - ber of our group of six was Kaitlin, new to our work area as of the day before. She was walking with us mostly because she didn't yet know how to get from the meeting room to our cubicles. We're not sure if Kaitlin is boring or if she's resis tant to bonding, but then again none of us have really cranked up our charm. We passed Warren from the motion capture studio. "Yo! jPodsters! A turtle! All right!" He flashed a thumbs-up. "Thank you, Warren. We can all feel the love in the room." Clearly, via the gift of text messag in g . Warren and pretty much everyone in the company now knew of our pli ght, which is this: during today's marketing meeting we learned we now have to retroactively insert a charismatic cuddly turtle character into our skateboard game, which is already nearly, one-third of the way through its production cycle. Yes, you read that correctly, a turtle character-in a skateboard game. The three-hour meeting had taken place in a two-hundred-seat room nick named the air-conditioned rectum. I tried to make the event go faster by pretend ing to have superpower vision: I could see the carbon dioxide pumping in and out of everyone's nose and mouth - it was purple. It made me think of that urban legend about the chemical they put in swimming pools that reveals when some body pees. Then I wondered if Leonardo da Vinci had ever inhaled any of the oxygen molecules I was breathing, or if he ever had to sit through ,a marketing meeting. What would that have been like? "Leo, thanks for your input, but our studies indicate that when they see Lisa smile, they want a sexy, flirty smile, not that grim little slit she has now. Also, I don't know what that closet case Michelangelo is thinking with that naked David guy, but Jesus, clamp a diaper onto him pronto. Next item on the agenda: Perspective - Passing Fad or Oppor tunity to Win? But first, Katie here is going to tell us about this Friday's Jeans Day, to be followed by a ten-minute muffin break." But the word "turtle" pulled me out of my reverie, uttered by Fearless Leader-our new head of marketing, Steve. I put up my hand and quite reasonably asked, "Sorry, Steve, did you say a turtle!" Christine, a senior development director, said, "No need to be sarcastic, Ethan. Steve here took Toblerone chocolate and turned it around inside of two years." "No," Steve protested. "I a ppreciate an open dialogue . All I'm really saying is that, at home, my son, Carter, plays SimQuest4 and can't get enough of its turtle character, and if my Carter likes turtle characters, then a turtle character is a winner, and thus, this skateboard game needs a turtle." John Doe BlackBerried me: I CAN'T FEEL MY LEGS And so the order was issued to make our new turtle character "accessible" and "fun" and the buzzword is so horrible I have to spell it out in ASCII: "{101, 100, 103, 121}" *** Back in our cubicle pod, the six of us fizzled away from each other like ginger ale bubbles. I had eighteen new emails and one phone message, my mother: "Dear, could you give me a call? I really need to speak with you-it's an emergency." An emergency? I phoned her cell ri ght away. "Mom, what's up? What's wrong?" "Ethan, are you at work right now?" "Where else would I be?" "I'm at SuperValu. Let me call you back from a pay phone."

The line went dead. I picked it up when it rang. "Mom, you said this was an emergency." "It is, dear. Ethan, honey, I need you to help me." "I just got out of the Worst Meeting Ever. What's going on?" "I suppose I'd better just tell you flat out." "Tell me what?" "Ethan, I killed a biker." "You killed a biker?" "Well, I didn't mean to." "Mom, how the hell did you manage to kill a biker?" "Ethan, just come home right now. I'll be there in twenty minutes." "Why doesn't Dad help?" "He's on a shoot today. He might get a speaking part." She hung up. *** On my way out of the office, I passed a world-building team, standing in a semicircle, staring at a large German-made knife on a desktop. ' "What's up?" I asked. "It's the knife we're using to cut Aidan's birthday cake," a friend, Josh, replied. I looked more closely at the knife: it was clownishly big. "Okay, it's hard-core Itchy & Scratchy - but so what?" "We're having a contest - we're trying to see if there's any way to hold a knife and walk across a room and not look psycho." ARTHUR HAILEY Arthur Hailey, an English language writer, whose books have an unprecedented popularity with the reading public, can help modern readers in their understanding of the world around, especially modem Born in Luton, England, on April 5, 1920 Hailey served in the Royal Air Force from the start of World War II in 1939 until 1947, when he went to live in Canada. After working at a number of jobs and writing part-time, he became a full-time writer in 1956, encouraged by the success of the CBC television drama, Flight into Danger (in print as Runway Zero Eight). Following the suc cess of Hotel in 1965, he moved to California; in 1969, he moved to the Bahamas to avoid Canadian and U.S. income taxes, which were claiming 90% of his in come. Each of his novels has a different industrial or commercial setting and in cludes, in addition to dramatic human conflict, carefully researched information about the way that particular environments and systems function and how these affect society and its inhabitants. He would spend about one year researching a subject, followed by six months reviewing his notes and, finally, about 18 months writing the book. Many of his books have reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and more than 170 million copies have been sold worldwide in 40 languages. Many have been made into movies and Hotel was made into a long-running television series. Airport became a blockbuster movie with stunning visual effects. Hailey died in 2004. Arthur Hailey was best known for his top-selling stories about disasters. Key words often used in the descriptions of Arthur Hailey's books are "realistic", "informative", "intriguing", "thrilling", "can't put down", "top-selling" and "block - busting". Indeed, an advertising slogan for one of his books says: "THINK BIG. THINK BLOCKBUSTER. THINK ARTHUR HAILEY". The key to his success as a novelist is that he is able to combine highly realistic details of the world he

Obsolescent, Mel knew, despite its good management, and gleaming glass and chrome; despite its air traffic density, its record-breaking passenger volume, its Niagara of air freight, its expectations of even more of everything, and its boastful title, "Aviation Crossroads of the World." The airport was obsolescent because - as had happened so often in the short six decades of modern aviation history - air progress had eclipsed prediction. Once more, expert prognosticators had been wrong, the visionary dreamers right. And what was true here was true elsewhere. Nationwide, worldwide, the story was the same. Much was talked about aviation's growth, its needs, coming developments in the air which would provide the lowest cost transportation of people and goods in human history, the chance these gave the nations of the world to know each other better, in peace, and to trade more freely. Yet little on the ground - in relation to the problem's size - had been done. Well, one voice alone would not change everything, but each voice which spoke with knowledge and conviction was a help. It had come to Mel within the past few hours - he was not sure why or how - that he intended to continue speaking out the way he had tonight, the way he hadn't for so long. Tomorrow - or rather, later today - he would begin by summoning, for Mon day morning, an emergency special meeting of the Board of Airport Commis sioners. When the Board met, he would urge an immediate commitment to build a new runway paralleling three zero. The experience of tonight had strengthened/strenchened, as nothing else could, the arguments for increasing runway capacity which Mel had presented long ago. But this time, he determined, he would make a fight of it - with plain, blunt words, warning of catastrophe if public safety were given lip service only, while vital operational needs were ignored or shelved. He would see to it that press and public opinion were marshaled on his side - the kind of pressure which down town politicians understood. After new runways, other projects, so far only talked about or hoped for, must be pressed on; among them - an entirely new terminal and runway complex; more imaginative ground flow of people and freight; smaller, satellite fields for the vertical and short takeoff aircraft which were coming soon. Either Lincoln International was in the jet age, or it wasn't; if it was, it must keep pace far better than it had. It was not, Mel thought, as if airports were an indulgence or some civic luxury. Almost all were self-sustaining, generating wealth and high employment. Not all the battles for ground-air progress would be won; they never were. But some of them could be, and some of what was said and done here because of Mel's stature in airport management could spill over into national, even interna tional, arenas. If it did, so much the better! The English poet John Donne; Mel remembered, had once written: No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. No airport was an island either; those which called themselves International should employ the kind of thinking to justify their name. Perhaps, working with others, Mel could help to show them how. People who hadn't heard from Mel Bakersfeld for a while might quickly learn that he was still around. And intensive work, a resumption of more of his old industry-wide inter ests, might help with personal problems by keeping his mind occupied. Mel hoped so, anyway. The thought was an abrupt reminder that sometime soon -perhaps tomorrow - he would have to call Cindy and arrange to move out his clothes and personal belongings. It would be an unhappy process which he hoped the girls, Roberta and Libby, would not be around to see. To begin with, Mel supposed, he would move into a hotel until he had time to arrange an apartment of his own. But more than ever he knew that Cindy's and his own decision for divorce had been inevitable. Both of them had known it; tonight they merely resolved to re move a facade behind which nothing existed any more. Neither for themselves nor for the children could anything have been gained by more delay.

It would still take time, though, to adjust. And Tanya? Mel was not sure what, if anything, was ahead for them together. He thought there might be a good deal, but the time for a commitment - if there was to be one - was not yet. He only knew that tonight, before this long and complex workday ended, he craved companionship, warmth, and tenderness; and, of all the friends he possessed, Tanya had those qualities in greatest measure. What else, between himself and Tanya, these might lead to would be known in time. Mel put his car in gear and swung it toward the perimeter road which would take him to the terminal. Runway three zero was on his right as he drove. Now that the runway was open, he saw, other aircraft were beginning to use it, arriving in a steady stream despite the lateness. A Convair 880 of TWA swept by and landed. Behind it, half a mile out, were the landing lights of another flight approaching. Behind the second, a third was turning in. The fact that Mel could see the third set of lights made him aware that the cloud base had lifted. He noticed suddenly that the snowfall had stopped; in a few places to the south, patches of sky were clearing. With relief, he realized the storm was moving on.
