Intonation Intonation contours in English Not all rises and falls in pitch that occur in the course of an English phrase can be attributed to stress. The same set of segments and word stresses can occur with a number of pitch patterns. Consider the difference between:  You're going. (statement)  You're going? (question) The rise and fall of pitch throughout is called its intonation contour . English has a number of intonation patterns which add conventionalized meanings to the utterance: question, statement, surprise, disbelief, sarcasm, teasing. An important feature of English intonation is the use of an intonational accent (and extra stress) to mark the focus of a sentence. Normally this focus accent goes on the last major word of the sentence, but it can come earlier in order to emphasize

one of the earlier words or to contrast it with something else. Cross-linguistic differences People have a tendency to think of intonation as being directly linked to the speaker's emotions. In fact, the meaning of intonation contours is as conventionalized as any other aspect of language. Different languages can use different conventions, giving rise to the potential for cross-cultural misunderstandings. Two examples of cross-linguistic differences in intonation patterns: Contrastive emphasis Many languages mark contrastive emphasis like English, using an intonational accent and additional stress. Many other languages use only syntactic devices for contrastive emphasis, for example, moving the emphasized phrase to the beginning of the sentence.  Instead of

o I want a car for my birthday. (as opposed to a bike)  you would have to say something like: o A car I want for my birthday. o It's a car that I want for my birthday. Listeners who speak the second type of language will not necessarily interpret extra pitch and volume as marking emphasis. Listeners who don't speak the second type of language will not necessarily interpret a different word order as marking emphasis (as opposed to assuming that the speaker doesn't know basic grammar). Questions The normal intonation contours for questions in English use:  final rising pitch for a Yes/No question o Are you coming today?  final falling pitch for a Wh-question o When are you coming? Where are you going? Using a different pattern typically adds something extra to the question. E.g., falling intonation on a Yes/No question can be interpreted as abruptness. Rising intonation on a Wh-question can imply surprise or that you didn't hear the answer the first time and are asking to have it repeated. These patterns too can be different across languages. Even small differences can be important: reading the one language with the intonation pattern appropriate to the other can give rise to entirely unintentional effects: English with Russian intonation sounds unfriendly, rude or threatening, to the native speaker of English; Russian with an English intonation sounds affected or hypocritical to the native speaker of Russian. Intonation is the variation in pitch while speakin g - not on a word-level but on a statement-level. By learning how native speakers use varying intonations, we can accurately understand what people try to communicate with us. As we listen closely to the melody of their speech, we can figure out their feelings, sense their moods and attitudes, and recognize questions, commands/requests and offers, ergo, properly respond to them. We say “I beg your pardon” with a rising intonation to ask someone to repeat his statement, yet we use the falling intonation for “How may I help you?” to offer our service. When do we use these two basic intonation patterns in English? 1. Falling tune - a pattern in which our voice falls to a low pitch by the end of a thought group or statement. We use the falling intonation in the following cases: 1. Short, complete sentences It's so near./It's very far. 2. In seeking information with question words such as what, when, which, who, how, etc. How much is this mug?/What's your name? 3. In tag questions when the speaker is sure that what he says is right It's a tough day, isn't it?/ It's a wonderful weather, isn't it? 4. Questions beginning with question words when the speaker wishes to show special interest Where do you live?/ What do you do for a living? 4. Tag questions when the speaker is not sure that what he says is correct You're sure, aren't you?/ You've checked it, haven't you? 5. Sentences ending with 'please'; for 'goodbye'; for 'thank you' when used to show gratitude for a simple matter (passing the dish, etc.) A cup of tea, please?/ Would you pass me that pen, please? English Intonation: Foreword Every language has its own intonation, or speech melody. Intonation helps you to recognize the language that you hear in the same way as the melody of a song helps you to recognize the song that you hear. If you change the melody of a song, your listener will have a hard time recognizing and understanding the song you are singing. The same is true in reference to intonation: if you speak English with Russian intonation, your listener will have a problem understanding what you are saying. English intonation is a pretty complicated and varied phenomenon. There are dialectal and regional differences in intonation. For example, there is a noticeable difference between British and American intonation. Intonation may sound differently depending on whether the speakers have high or low voices, speak fast or slowly, loudly or quietly, energetically, emotionally, neutrally, or listlessly. Men and women may have their own differences and preferences in intonation.

For the purpose of studying, this variety may be described in several intonation patterns characteristic of English speech In general, linguists distinguish several main types of English intonation. Falling intonation and rising intonation are the two basic types. Other main types of intonation include high fall, low fall, fall-rise, high rise, midlevel rise, low rise. They are variations of the two basic types of intonation. Language learners should master the typical patterns of standard falling intonation and rising intonation before studying their variations. Intonation is based on several key components, such as pitch, sentence stress, and rhythm. Pitch is the degree of height of our voice in speech. Normal speaking pitch is at midlevel. Intonation is formed by certain pitch changes characteristic of a given language. Falling intonation is formed by pitch changes from high to low, and rising intonation is formed by pitch changes from low to high. Sentence stress makes the utterance understandable to the listener by making the important words in the sentence stressed, clear and higher in pitch and by shortening and obscuring the unstressed words. Sentence stress provides rhythm in connected speech. All words have their own stress in isolation, but when they are connected into a sentence, important changes take place: content words are stressed, and function words aren't; thought groups (i.e., logically connected groups of words) are singled out by pauses and intonation; the stressed syllables occur at regular intervals and are usually higher in pitch than the unstressed syllables; the unstressed syllables are blended into a stream of sounds between the stressed syllables; emphatic stress may be used in the sentence to single out the most important word; the last stressed word in the sentence gets the strongest stress with the help of falling or rising intonation. Developing the ability to hear, understand, and reproduce sentence stress is the main prerequisite to mastering English intonation

Intonation performs several important functions in English. The first function is uniting separate words into sentences in oral speech. The second function of intonation is distinguishing between types of sentences (i.e., statements, questions, commands, requests, exclamations). Also, intonation allows us to express various emotions: finality, confidence, interest, surprise, doubt, joy, pain, irony, etc It is important to understand that intonation patterns have their own meaning. One and the same word or phrase pronounced with different types of intonation will convey different meanings and will be understood differently. For example: No. – No? – No! Change of standard patterns of intonation also has meaning. For example, rising intonation makes a command more polite, more like a request. English intonation is very different from Russian intonation. Both languages use falling and rising intonation, but they are not the same in English and Russian. It's very important not to bring Russian intonation into English because intonation patterns from Russian may convey a different meaning in English and cause misunderstanding and even produce an unfavorable impression of you. It is necessary to study English intonation together with your study of grammar and vocabulary as soon as you begin studying English, because it will be difficult to get rid of the Russian accent later on. The best way to study English intonation is by listening and repeating. Marking stress, pauses, falling intonation, rising intonation, and other phonetic phenomena in the written copy of the recording that you are listening to will help you to understand and memorize intonation patterns It is also very useful to record your reading of the text transcript and compare your result with the audio file that you are studying.
