INTRODUCTION Our respected President Islam Karimov's speech at THE LAW OF OLIY MAJLIS and Senat's joint session was 4 -th conception of deepening democratic reforms again and developing the society of citizenship in our country. Each part of these conception are regulation to project the future of our country. The great attention in the conception is paid to the role of the political parties developing the activity of the chambers of Oliy Majlis, the priority of law and other aspects. In this period much attention paid to increase the protection of private property, to form the class of property owners, to strengthen the activity of formers to provide the liberalization of economy, to prepare the comfortable conditions to develop the discretion especially small business, to crest the wide fields of market infrastructure. The main task must be to achieve the parliament to be the propagandist of democratic news, indicated to form a strong society of citizenship and liberal reforms. The activity of ecology raised to a new quality level. This submits the great possibility of defending the population of our country from dangerous changes of ecology. The problem of widening the rights and authority of Institutions of citizen's society, especially the organs of self - governing must be the problem in our country. Nowadays we know the significance of solving the actual problems of citizen in time and successfully, to protect their benefits, the influence of community is increasing. 1 To solve the problem of the influence and importance of our communities, especially the young people of our population provides the successful activity of social branch. The most important task is to creeping the role of the mass media system. After the independence many thing are done to develop the system of mass media. liberalization of mass media, to provide freedom of speech. In the condition s of deep socio - cultural transformations which have taken place in Independent Uzbekistan during the transition to market, economy , multiple forms, of property and different social systems , the problem of the formation of citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan, their historical memory an d their education have special significance. All people , especially the e young need a deep appricationed love of the rich heritage of our ancestors and the inexhaustible fund of their philosophical and scientific works. Without the historical experience of one's own nation and national and human values it is impossible to build a great future. That is why the e problem of continuity of the knowledge and spiritual values of our ancestors, and an understanding and familiarity with such values by all citizens of the Republic has special significance. In all stages of the development of humankind one finds spiritually, morality and all the values and culture which enrich nature. Real humanism and benevolence are the highest spiritual - moral values. These ideas have been propagated by the best human minds over many centuries. I . A . Karimov said "Humanism is the inalienable characteristics of the Uzbek people; cruelty an violence are alien to them. Trough a thousand years of the richest events of our history of our people survived many things - joy in the blossoming of culture and science, and sorrow in quarrel sand the loss of our best sons and daughters, But the circumstances of history - cruel wars and natural l disasters - could not break the benevolence of the people. Now the Uzbek family is the personification of goodness and light, love of children and sympathetic response to human troubles" The most dangerous and a moral forms of abuse of official duty are different kinds of graft . It is detrimental to the moral health of society, when honest relations between people are changed to, e.g. "You must give me something and after that i will give you something" or "Live well yourself and give another where by to live well" etc. Under such conditions, very often the develop wide spread time - serving, flattery 3

and fawning which spawn plots, backbiting, envy, slander the seeking of special advantage, etc. All these distortions of moral values have a common basic namely an egoistic psychology of personality. Distorted morality and ambition very often create a bad moral atmosphere in labor teams. A t the present time, as many hundred years ago, there is conflict between people with different value orientations. Of course, the highest level of moral culture is not panacea for all troubles and mistake. But as a rule, moral culture determines the behavior of persons and their attributes an relationships with other people in society. Common values help people to face complicate, extraordinary situations as active citizens and to be patriots for their own nation. The double morality used by many people is incompatible with common values. . The moral demands of civilized, democratic society categorilly rejects in social life proposing one value, but in personal life livening by another. These clearly suffer a split personality which can be seen in the opposition between words and deeds. The creation in Uzbekistan of an ideology of national independence is founded upon national origins, languages, customs traditions an human values. The national ideology is a good basic for education in such qualities as benevolence, tolerance and aspirations to knowledge and justice. That is why I. A . Karimov noted that "we talk about national consciousness, national honor, national ideology because we have decide d to lead Uzbekistan into the realm of grate states. Our children, our young men and women must be educated in such a way that they believe in that idea and have the dignity to be citizens o f such a great state." According to the contents of our President's speeches we , the young people must do our best to flourish our country and its development by being well educated persons. Because our President believes us and we must justify President's belief to us. My research work depends to the language. because learning foreign languages 4

are necessary in our time. is that the theme is not studied thoroughly in theory and in practice. As a result of studying many grammar books we found out that many great scientists such as Barhudarov, Kaushanskaya, B. Ilyish didn’t pay much attention to the problem of the predicate expressed by an adjective. That is why we choose this theme a sour research work. The extensity of studying research work . Many scientists studied the predicate . They gave much opinions about the predicate . But they did not substantiate the adjective predicate theoretically, and practically. And this theme doesn’t studied as a safe research work. So we choose this was as the research work. The aim of the theme . The aim of this theme is to analyze the use of the adjective as a predicate, to find out the basis of this theme and to work out scientific and methodic recommendations concerning to the research work. The object of the research work . The adjective predicate. The subject of the research work . The examples chosen from the artistic literatures. Main tasks of the research work . To realize the importance of studying the predicate expressed by an adjective : 1) to define the place and the function of the predicate in the sentence 2) to study the relations between subject and predicate. 3) to study the predicate by an adjective 4) to work out scientific and methodic recommendations concerning to this theme. The scientific novelty of the research work:  the problem of the adjective - predicate is settled down theoretically and practically.  the historical experience concerning to this theme is studied.  worked out scientific and methodic recommendations about this research work The scientific and practical importance of the research work : During studying this research work we found out that this theme is not studied thoroughly an d we tried to analyze the adjective predicate theoretically and practically. By studying this research work we succeed to prove the importance of adjective predicate in the sentence. The students of English department, scientific investigators and the persons who are interesting in learning English can use this research work. My research work consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and the list of used literature and, it is consist of .....pages. Many scientists gave opinions about adjective predicate. The great Russian grammatist B. Ilyish did not study to adjective predicate separately. He only commented that the compound nominal predicate can be expressed by an adjective also. The US grammatists Cole Brown, Jeffrey Nillson in the "Grammar and Composition" wrote the theme predicate adjectives separately. But they explained the predicate adjectives with only one sentence and a few examples. They wrote : "A predicate adjective is an adjective hat follows a linking verb and modifies the subject of the sentence." Here are some examples giving in this book : The sound coming out of the speakers was rather feeder. The story that I read last night was quite difficult to follow. Harrison felt refreshed and relaxed after his month - long vacation. But these authors also payed little attention to this theme. 6

Another Russian grammatist K. N. Kachalova gave more information than the other authors. She explained compound nominal predicate and with what it can be expressed. In this part she says that the compound nominal predicate can be expressed by a linking verb and an adjective. She also says that besides the verb to be there are other linking verbs to become, to grow, to get, to turn to seem, to look and others. She gives the following examples: It grew warmer. He is getting old. She turned pale. He looks ill. Besides that only this scientist says that compound verbal predicate is also expressed with the adjective combination and infinitive or gerund. To this rule she gives these examples: I am glad to see you. He is ready to help her. This book is worth to reading. Studying the works of scientists we see that the predicate adjective is not paid much attention by them. They gave only simple explanations about this theme. That is why we think that it is necessary for us to study this theme a s a research and to analyze the adjective predicate theoretically and practically. 7

Main characteristics of the main parts of the sentence It is common in grammatical theory to distinguish main parts of a sentence. Besides main and secondary types there is one more elements which are said to stand outside the sentence structure. In starting now to study parts of the sentences in Modern English we will begin by analyzing the principles on which the classification is based. A sentence expresses a complete thought a s opposed a phrase that can give a lot of information, but does not complete the whole thought There two generally recognized main parts of the sentences - the subject and the predicate. All sentences have a subject and predicate. The subject is the person thing, place or idea that the sentence is about and can be a noun, a pronoun, or a noun phrase. The predicate tells something about subject, like what it did or how it looks. As to the secondary parts their number varies slightly. Among them we usually find the object (with its subdivisions), the attribute, and the adverbial modifier. Other secondary parts are also sometimes mentioned - the opposition (its relation to the attribute) is variously interpreted the objective predicative and occasionally some other parts too. The reason for calling the subject and the predicate the main parts of the sentence and distinguishing them from all parts which are treated as secondary is roughly this, the subject and the predicate between them constitute the backbone of the sentence : without them the sentence would not exist at all, whereas all other parts may or may not be there and if they are there, they serve to define or modify either the subject or the predicate, or each other. A linguistic experiment to prove the correctness or this view would be to take a sentence containing a subject a predicate, and a number of secondary parts, and to show that any of the secondary parts might be removed without the sentence being destroyed, whereas if either the subject or the predicate were removed there would be no sentences left its "backbone" would be broken. This experiment would probably 8

succeed and to prove the point in a visit majority of cases. We will therefore stick to the division of sentence parts into main and secondary taking the subject and the predicate to be the main, and all the others to be secondary. The questions now arises how are we to define the subject of sentence? The question may also be put in a different way : what criteria do we practically apply when we say that a word (or, sometimes, a phrase) is the subject of a sentence? In trying to give a definition of the subject, we shall have to include in it both general points, valid for languages in general, and specific points connected with the structure of Modern English. Thus the definition of the subject the modern English will only partly not wholly, coincide with its definition, say in Russian. First let us formulate the structure of the definition itself. It is bound to contain the following items:  the meaning of the subject, i.e. its relation to the thought expressed in the sentence;  its syntactical relations in the sentence;  its morphological realization ; Here a list o f morphological ways of realizing the subject must be given, but it need not be exhaustive, as it is our purpose merely to establish the essential characteristics of every part of the sentence. The definition of the subject would , then, be something like this. The subject is one of the two main parts of the sentence. It denotes the thing whose action or characteristics is expressed by the predicate. It is not dependant on any other part of the sentence. It may be expressed by different parts of speech, the most frequent ones being : a noun in the common case, a personal pronoun in the nominative case, a demonstrative pronoun occasionally a substantivized adjective, a numeral, an infinitive, a gerund. It may also be expressed by a phrase 2 . In discussing problems of the subject, we must mention the argument that has 2 The structure of modern English 1971. P-199 9

been going on for some reason or time about sentences of the following type : It save Hermione a sudden convulsive sensation of pleasure, to see these rich colours under the candlelight. Two views have been put forward concerning such sentence. one is , that the pronoun it at the beginning of the sentence is the formal subject and the real subject is the infinitive. The other view is, that it is the subject of the sentences and the infinitive an opposition to it. There is something to be said on both sides of the question. On the whole , however, the second view seems preferable, as the division of subjects into formal and real ones seems hard to justify in general syntactical theory. 3 As we know have seen , the definition of the subject given here includes mention of the predicate. This is in accordance with the view stated above, that the two notions are correlative, that is to say there is a subject in two member sentences only. in a similar way, a definition of the predicate will have to include mention of the subject. Following the same pattern in the definition of the predicate, we arrive at the following result. The predicate is one of the main parts of sentence:  it denotes the action or property of the thing expressed by the subject  it is not dependant on any part of the sentence  ways of expressing the predicate are varied and their structure will better be considered under the heading of the types of predicate. Here it will suffice to say that among them are : a finite verb form, and a variety of phrases, for instance, phrases of the following patterns " finite verb + infinitive", "link verb + noun", "link verb + adjective " , " link verb + preposition + noun". The assertion that the predicate is not dependent on any other part of the sentences, including the subject requires some comment. It is sometimes claimed that the predicate agrees in number with the subject : when the subject is in the singular, the predicate is bound to be in the singular - the predicate is bound to be in the plural 3 B. as well. However this statement is very doubtful. As we have seen above there is much to be said in favour of the view that the category of number in the predicate verb is independent of the number n the subject. this is especially confirmed by sentences like "My family are early rises" where the plural number in the link verb shows the plurality of the acting persons, though the subject noun is in the singular. Besides it should be noted that this question of concord or no concord is one that belongs to the level of phrases, not to that of the cord is one that belongs to the level of phrases, not to that of the sentence and its part. Thus, there seems to be no valid reason for thinking that the predicate is in anyway dependant on the subject. The predicate is one of the two main parts of the sentences. It denotes the action or property of the thing expressed by the subject. It is not dependent on any other part of the sentence. Ways of expressing the predicate are varied and their structure will better be considered under the heading of types of predicate. Predicate may be classified in two ways, one of which is based on their structure (simple and compound) and the other on their morphological characteristics (verbal and nominal). If we take the structure classification as the basic one we obtain the following types: а ) simple predicate: verbal; nominal; b) compound predicate verbal; nominal; If we take the morphological classification as the basic on the result would be the following : Verbal predicate - simple, compound. Nominal predicate - simple compound. The ultimate result is of course the some in both cases. Most of the predicate 11

types mentioned here do not call for any comment. However, sometimes has to be said on two questions the simple nominal predicate and the limits of the compound verbal predicate. "Priscilla - the mistress of the house, is ridding a newspaper at breakfast. I see Surrey won she said with her mouth full by for crickets. The sun is in Leo that would account for it. " Although the word cricket "cricket " is not mentioned it is quite evident from the words " Surrey" (which he denotes a cricket team) " won " and cricket match. The latter part of Mr. Barbecue brig’s speech who thoroughly English adds another predicative to the first "splendid game " and also with no linking verb to it. If changed into the usually compound nominal predicate pattern, the sentence would run. Cricket is a splendid game it is so thoroughly English the meaning would be quiet the same as in the original sentence but the specific colloquial coloring would he gone altogether The Participle as Predicate. We would probably also class among sentence with a simple nominal the sentence in which the function of predicate is performed by a participle. Sentence of this type received very little attention until quite recently , when they were discussed in a grammar by professor N. Irtenyeva and in a dissertation by Komissorova. It will perhaps be best to start discussion of such sentences by considering a few characteristics examples "And then to add to the nervousness and confusion engendered by all this, thoughts as to what additional developments or persons, even he might encounter - before leaving on his climacteric errand - Roberta announcing that because of the heat and the fact that they were coming back to dinner, she would leave her bat and coat - a hat in which he had already seen the label of Braunstein in Lycurgus - and which at the time caused him to the meditate as to the wisdom of leaving or extracting it." This of course is complex sentence, with several subordinate clauses in it and the main clause is a participle clause: "And then Roberta announcing as a one this might admit of two different interpretations : we may take the clause with Roberta announcing as a one member clause Roberta the main part and 12

announcing an attribute" to it or we may think it is a two member clause with, Roberta the subject and announcing the predicate What criterion shall we apply to coose between the two alternatives? If we take it as one member clause it would fall under the same head as some sentences we have considered above, for instances, the one form, (an American tragedy) "Dusk - of a summer night" or like so m any stage directions of the type. A large room (also its it’s predicate-adjective, i have just found one sentence which expressed by the name of my research work), Three chairs and etc. Now the sentence containing Roberta announcing is evidently quite different in character. It tells the fact that Roberta announced that she would leave her hat and coat etc. 4 Much the same may be said of the following example And then the next day Gun Lodge and Bittern itself and clued climbing down from the brain at noon gun lodge and escorting Roberta to the waiting bus the while he assured her that since they were coming back this, it would be best if she were to leave her bag there while he , because of his camera as well as the lone down up at Grass lack and crowded into his suitcase,, would take his own with him because they would lunch on the lake. We need not dwell have on the subordinate clauses. Which are irrelevant for our judgment of the structure of the participle clause. This example differs from the proceeding in that the fives subordinate clause, namely the text. And then the next day at noon Gun Lodge and Big Bittern itself and Clyde climbing down from the train at gun lodge and escorting these of the two coordinate independent clauses with the e adverbial modifier then the next day at noon referring to both of them. The first main clause namely gun lodge and big battle itself is quite clearly a one member clause with to coordinate main parts and the second main clause a participle clause, Clyde climbing down from the train at gun lodge and escorting Roberta to the waiting bus. 2) escorting. Even the neighborhood of member clause Gun Lodge and Big Bittern , Itself cannot it would seem be taken as proof that the clause Clyde waiting bus is a one - member clause. Such examples are these go a long way to show that the participle, though it is a verbal, not a finite verb form is able to perform by itself a function generally believed to be characterized of finite verb forms only, namely that of predicate. This possibility , as well as, the ability of the infinitive to be in certain circumstances the main part of a one member, should perhaps, he taken, into account in a definition, at these forms and of verbal’s in general. An additional remark may not be out of place here. In analyzing sentence having an infinitive or a participle as predicate have shown the predicate to be a nominal own. However this view may be challenged on the ground that both the infinitive and the participle are forms of verb and there would seem to be some reason for claiming that the predicate of such sentence is a verbal one. It must be admitted that there are no binding reasons either away as both the infinitive and the participle are verbal’s that is they share of the nature of a verb and of a nominal part of speech (noun or adjective) This reason we considered professional such predicates to be nominal is that an infinitive an participle can function to be as predicate in connection with a link verb it my at least be argued that this shows them to be nominal elements of the predicate. Other types of Nominal Predicate. Besides these main cases of a simple nominal predicate there also some rare types such as in the next of weather bulletins and the like for instance Wind sauithly later varying wetware sea slight etc. Such sentence as these read like passages from a questioner the adjective answering a question referring to the thing denoted by the noun (wind, sea) and etc. Limits of the Compound Verbal Predicate . Now we come to the second question about the limits of the compound verbal predicate. It arises from the fact that a rather 14

considerable number of the verb can be followed by an infinitive some of them with other without the participle to among such verbs are: shall, will, should, would, can, may , must, (without to) ought with, want, desire, hate, fear, begin, strt, continue, remember, forget.... Between these phrases and parts of the sentence is of course not the same in all cases. We can at once eliminate the phrases shall should, will would + infinitive which constitute tense or mood forms of the verb, Thus the phrase shall write is a form the forms write writes wrote in its lexical meaning and consequently it is a simple verbal predicate. The phrases with the verbs (can, may,, must, ought) in the letter cause to constitute compound verbal predicate (this is almost universally recognized) But the phrases with the verbs (wish, want desire, hate , fear, begin, start, continue and etc,) give rise to doubts and controversies. On the whole there are two views expressed in t his matter . According to on of them all such phrases are also a compound predicate the finite verb (wish begin) does not denote any action of its own it merely denotes the subjects attitude to the action expressed by the following infinitive (in the case of wish fear, and, etc.) or phrase in the development of that action namely its beginning continuation, and, etc. (in the case of begin). Consequently it argued, the phrase as a whole constitutes the predicate of the sentence, it is a compound verbal predicate just as in the case of can, may, or ought... This argument as will be basely seen is based on purely semantic reason its decisive point is that the finite verb does not denote any special action and only denotes the subjects attitude to it or a phrase of the action itself. But this is irrelevant from the grammatical viewpoint. What is more this is line of reasoning is dangerous,, if we were to follow it to its logical consequences we should have to include into the predicate not only such as phrases as containing a noun. Indeed, from the semantic viewpoint, on which the argument for began to work being the predicate is based there is no differences between began to work began his work. Therefore, approaching phenomena from a grammatical viewpoint, which is the essential one here, we from the assumption that in the phrase began his work the 15

group his work is a separate (secondary part of the sentence) an object. This shows that the verb begin can be followed by a noun functioning as an object (the name of or same of course applies to a number of other verbs) since the verb begin can take an object there appears to be no reason to deny that an infinitive following this verb is an object as well. We might give here a table based on what is called transformation: began to work - began his work continued to work - continued his work liked to sing - liked songs On the other hand, notable of this kind is possible with such verbs as can, may, must, ought, they cannot under any circumstances be follow by a noun and this is an important differences on which syntactic analysis should be based. Another question of a similar kind arises with reference to sentence containing idioms of the pattern verb=noun for ex. make a mistake, make one's appearance, have a look, have a smoke, take a glance, and etc. Here two different approaches chosen will predetermine all conclusions to be arrived at in considering concrete examples. One approach would be to say that if a phrase is a phrase logical unit that is, if its meaning is not equal to the sum of the meanings of its components , it can not be divided into two parts of the sentence and has to be taken as one part , namely the predicate. The other approach would be to say that such phrase logical phenomena belong to the sphere of lexicology alone and are irrelevant for grammar, that is for sentence analyses. The choice between the two approaches entirely depends on the view one take s of grammar, its place in linguistics, and its relation to lexicology . It does not seem possible to prove that one of the approaches is right and the other wrong. One of the arguments is favor of the view that phrase logical units should be treated as one part of the sentence is this. If the phrase verb + noun is no t a phrase logical unit a separate question can be put to the noun, that is, a question to which the noun supplies an answer. For instance, if we take the sentence HE MAKE TOYS the question would be 16

WHAT DOES HE MAKE? and the answer would be supplied by the word toys which accordingly is a separate part of the sentence , is this namely an object. If, on the other hand we take the sentence, HE MAKES MISTAKE it would not be possible to ask the question WHAT DOES HE MAKE? and to give mistakes as an answer to it. Consequently, according to this view we can not say that mistakes is a separate part of the sentence and we must conclude that the phrases makes mistakes as a whole is the predicate. However, this sort of argument is not building. The methods of asking questions, though widely used in school language teaching , is not a scientifically valid method of syntactic study. In a number of the cases the choice of the question is arbitrary and there are even cases when no question at all can asked. Thus, the decision between the two alternatives presented above rests the scholar. This is, and most probably will always be a matter of opinion rather than of proved knowledge. Before we go further in this matter let us consider another case also belonging here, namely phrases of the type come in , bring up, put down, and etc. Which we discussed in chapters in studying parts of speech. Should these phrases be taken as the predicate or should the predicate be limited to the verb alone (come, bring , put) This again is a matter of opinion. The phrase come in for instance can equally well be analyzed at the predicate of the sentence and as a combination of the predicate and the secondary parts. On the other hand, the phrase bring up (as in the sentence THEY BROUGHT UP THREE CHILDREN) would be taken to be the predicate with a secondary part and this is of course is due to the meaning of the phrases , which certainly is not equal to the sum of meaning o f the verb bring and the adverb up this semantic consideration in the favor of tuning the whole phrase to be one part of the sentence (it is predicate). But again this argument is not building. Whether such semantic consideration should or should not be taken into account in syntactic analysis as a matter of opinion. It is possible to argue that consideration of this kind should not weigh when we are engaged in syntactic studies. On the whole we will admire to the view that such considerations should be 17

taken into account and accordingly we will consider the phrases bring up, set and etc. as the predicate of the sentence. The Compound Nominal Predicate . The compound nominal predicate lays consists of a link verb (also called copula) and the predicate which maybe expressed by various parts of speech usually a noun, an adjective, also statute or an adverb (as in the sentences THE LESSON IS OVER) Often enough the predicate is represented by a phrase most usually of the pattern preposition + noun which may or may not be a phraseological unit. Now we must find the characteristic features of a linking verb. It should first of all be noted that the term linking verb (as well as the term copula after which it appears to have been coined) is not a very happy one. The idea of link suggests that its functions is to connect the predicative with the subject this however is hardly intelligible, why should the predicative need some special word to connect it with the subjects? It could stand side by side with the subject without the help of any link in sentence with the simple nominal predicate which we have discussed on page 20, and this is still more usual in Russian where no linking verb as a rule appears in the present tense the true functions. It expresses the tense and the mood in the predicate. The linking verb BE which expresses these categories and also those of a number and person, is rightly considered to be the most abstract of all linking verbs, that is the one most devoid of any meaning of its own. Other link verbs have each some lexical meaning. Though the term link verb is purely conventional we will retain it as it is in common use and an attempt to substituted another term would stand little chance of success. Besides the verb BE there are a number of other link verbs which different meaning, whole we need not discuss here , for in BECOME, GET, CONTINUE, GROW, TURN... then he grew thirsty and went indoors.(link later) . But presently the 18

sea turned longhand etc. It will be readily seen that of them do not always perform this function but may also be predicate in themselves for instance the verb grow in the sentences THE CHILD HAS GROWN or WE GROW POTATOES of course it is only the meaning at the noun following the verb that shows whether the noun is a predicative or an object compare the two sentence. THEY HAVE GROWN FINE YOUNG MAN and WE GROW POTATOES so if we say that a verb is a linking verb this need not necessarily mean that is s always a link verb and cannot perform any other function 5 . To approach the subject of link verb and predicative from another angle, we may say that if a verb i followed by a predicative it is to some extent at least a link verb. The restriction to some extent at least is necessary because there are sentences in which the the finite verb’s a predicate in itself that is it contains some in formations about the subject which may be taken separately, but at the some time the verb is followed a predicative ( a noun or a n adjective) and is no so far a link verb. This is found in sentences like the following. HE CAME HOME TIRED. SHE MARRIED YOUNG. HE DIED A BACHELOR. and etc. the finite verb in such sentences always conveys of meaning of its own. he came, she married, he died. but the main point of the sentence lies in the information conveyed by the predicative noun or adjective. We might retell the meaning of these sentences in another ways namely. HE WAS TIRED WHEN HE CAME HOME, SHE WAS YOUNG WHEN SHE MARRIED, HE WAS A BACHELOR, WHEN HE DIED an d etc. The finite verb burdens being a predicate in itself, also performs the functions of a linking verb. Since such sentences have both a simple verbal predicate , and a compound these form are special or mixed type. predicates of this kind may be termed double predicates . Here are some examples: Sunlight sleighed this and golden through the high belong windows above the cages and fell in broad shaft's to the linoleum floor where he dropped his pocket. blood ran cold with the horrid suggestion which naturally prang from these words (Jane Austen) . The lexical meaning of the verb RUB is here almost wholly obliterated a swill also be seen by translating the sentence into Russian or indeed any other language the assesses of the predication is of course contained in the predicative adjective COLD. Let us now look at a few more examples of sentences wuth as predicative coming after a full predicate with secondary parts attached to it SHE HAD SET HER FEET UPON THAT ROAD, A SPOILED SELFISH AND UNTRIED GIRL, FULL OF YOUTH WARM OF EMOTION, EASILY TEWILDERED BY LIFE (Dreiser). A SPOILED SELFISH AND UNTRIED GIRL is as predicative coming after a fully developed predicate group consisting of the predicative itself an object and an adverbial modifier that the group A SPOILED SELFISH AND UNTRIED GIRL is a predicative is clear because no other syntactical tie between this group and the proceeding words in the sentence can be imagined. It is peculiarity of this sentence that the predicative has three loose attributes belonging to it full of youth warm of emotion and easily bewildered by life they make this predicative group very weighty indeed. It may also be noted that the predicative group a spoiled selfish full of youth warm of emotion and easily bewildered by life represents the theme of the sentence while the preceding words in the sentences represent its theme. Indeed, the sentence is not to inform the reader that she had set her suit on that road , but one kind of person she was at that time she did so. If the predicate (with the secondary parts) were to be dropped the communication value of the sentence would be basically changed and in the context in which it stands value would be reduced to nougat. The same is ground in the following examples YOU HAVE COME SUCH A BEAUTIFUL LADY (TAYLOR), I SAT DOWN HUNGRY, I WAS HUNGRY WHILE I ATE , AND I GOT UP FROM THE TABLE HUNGRY (SARAYON). It should also be noted that the verb proceeding the predicative and therefore performing (at least partly) the function of a link verb may be i n the passive voice. 20

This is especially true of the verbs FIND, THINK, REPORT as in the sentence he was found guilty, he was reported died and, etc. It may be the verb which as then in its turn followed by a predicate (a noun or an objective) for instance, HE WAS SAID TO BE A GREAT ACTOR, HE WAS REPORTED TO BE DIED etc. As far as meaning is concerned there seems to be no difference between the sentence, he was reported died and he was reported to be died or between the sentence he seemed clever he seemed to be clever and, etc. A s far as the structure is concerned the second variant in each case is some what more complicated in that the finite verb is first followed by an adjective, but which is itself the adjective of a link verb and therefore followed by another predicative. Besides the contraction of different predicate already mentioned various other contraptions are possible and actually occur in texts. However, finding out all these possibilities is of no particular scientific interest. Chapter II. THE USE OF THE ADJECTIVE AS A PREDICATE There is not much to be said about the English adjective from the morphological point of view. As is well known, it has neither number, nor case, nor 21

gender distinctions. Some adjectives differs materially not only from much highly inflected languages as Russian, Latin and German the adjectives have a rather complicated system of forms, but even from Modern French, which has preserved number and gender distinctions to the present day ( c.f. masculine singular grand, masculine plural grand’s, feminine singular grand, feminine plural grand large). By what signs do we then , recognize an adjective as such in Modern English? In most cases this can be done only by taking into account semantic and syntactical phenomena. but in some cases, that is for certain adjectives , derivative suffixes re significant, too. Among these are the suffix - less (as in useless) , the suffix - like (as in ghostlike) and a few others. Occasionally, however, though a suffix often appears in adjectives, it cannot be taken as a certain proof of the word being an adjective, because the suffix may also make part of a word belonging to another part of speech. Thus, the suffix - full would seem to be typically adjectival as, is its antonym - less. In fact we find the suffix - full in adjectives often enough as in beautiful, useful, purposeful, meaningful, and etc. But alongside of these we also find spoonful, mouthful, handful, and, etc. which are nouns. There are so many adjectives in the English language they can be classified many ways. Here are the main categories of adjectives according to their use and few examples :  Quantity adjectives tell how much and can be definite or indefinite, like - seven, few, several, all, some, every each or many.  An opinion adjective are simply that the opinion of the speaker and its purely subjective. Examples include : important, evil, better, ugly, rare, disguising, and amazing.  Some adjectives describe the size of object. They include: big, small, slim, svelte, scrawny, giant, plump, and gigantic.  Age adjectives would include old, antique, young, youthful, recent, modern, elderly, baby... 22

 Shape adjectives are another example of descriptive adjectives and some are - round, oblong, wavy, crooked, distorted, sleek, spherical, and triangular.  Color adjectives are many in number. They include - purple, white, brownish, pastel, tanned, dark-blue, yellow...  Some adjectives tell the origin of the object such as - Canadian, Indian, Swiss, Spanish, lunar, polar, southern Californian  Another descriptive adjectives tells the materials which the object made of. Examples are - cotton, polyester, glass, plastic, china, metal, teal, wooden...  Purpose adjectives would include words like - work, fishing, racing, swinging, and cooking We should also know that there are many more out there that describe, or modify, nouns and pronouns. Some of these kinds of adjectives would be emotion, personality, sound, touch, taste, smell, speed, temperature, distance, brightness, and time... On the whole , the number of adjective which can be recognized as such by their suffix seems to be insignificant as compared with the mass of English adjectives. According to their meaning and grammatical characteristics Kaushanskaya divided into two classes. 1. Qualitative adjectives 2. Relative adjectives. Qualitative adjectives denote qualities of a substance directly, not through its relation to another substance, as size share, color, physical and mental qualities, qualities if general estimation - little, large, high, soft, hard, war, white, blue, pink strong, bold, beautiful, important necessary Relative adjectives denote qualities of a substance through their relation to materials. (silken, woolen, wooden) to place- Italian, Asian, to time - monthly, weekly, to some action - preparatory, rotator... 23

Most qualitative adjectives have degrees of comparison: big - bigger - the biggest interesting-more interesting-the most interesting Some qualitative adjectives such as - greensick, darkish, incurable, unsuitable, chief, principal have no degrees of comparison. Qualitative adjectives have certain typical suffixes such as - ful, -less, -ous, -ent, -able, -y, -ish; careful, careless, dangerous, convenient, comfortable, silvery, watery, whitish, shortlist. Qualitative adjectives can be used as attributes and predicative: 1. Thus by the great friendship of the Secretary the whole affair was compromised. (J.S. "G.T" p-76) (attributes) 2. A single, energetic fly irked round the room (P.A "TPOTH" p-91) (attributes) 3. The food is not good (P.A "TPOTH" p-115) (predicative) 4. Francis was angry (J. L . "WF" p- 49) (predicative) Relative adjectives have no degrees of comparison. They do not form adverbs with the suffix -ly. They have certain typical suffixes, such as -en, -an, -ist, -ic, -ical... wooden Italian, synthetic, analytical. Relative adjectives are chiefly used as attributes and seldom predicative: .... she was a fair example of the middle American class..... (S.M. CA p-28) (attribute). It must be pointed out that no hard and fast line of demarcation exists between relative and qualitative adjectives. Compare: silken thread (relative adjective), but silken hair (qualitative adjective). Substantivized adjectives have acquired some or all of the characteristics of the noun, but their adjectival origin is still generally felt. Substantivized adjectives are divided into wholly substantivized and partially substantivized adjectives . Wholly substantivized adjectives have all the characteristics of nouns, namely the plural form, the genitive case; they are associated with articles, i.e. they have become nouns: a native , the natives. Some wholly substantivized adjectives have only the plural form: eatables, valuables, ancients. 24

Partially substantivized adjectives acquire only some of the characteristics of the noun; they are used with the definite article. Partially substantivized adjectives denote a whole class: the rich, the poor, the unemployed. They may also denote abstract notions: the good, the evil, the beautiful, the singular, the plural... Substantivized adjectives denoting nationalities fall under wholly and partially substantivized adjectives. Wholly substantivized adjectives are a Russian - Russian, a German - Germans. Partially substantivized adjectives are : The English, the French, the Chinese 6 . There is also the question of the opposite phenomenon - that of nouns becoming adjectives. For a variety of reasons, this question presents a number of difficulties and has, accordingly, given rise to prolonged and inconclusive discussions. The facts are, briefly stated these. In modern English a noun may stand before another noun and modifier it Witness numerous formations of the type stone wall, speech sound peace talks, steel works, the Rome treaty, etc. The question , as usually asked is, whether the first component of phrases is a noun or whether it has been adjectivized, i.e. become an adjective. Different views have been put forward here. The view that the first element of such phrases as stone wall is a noun has been defended by H. Sweet and others, the view that it is an adjective or at least approaches the adjective state , by O. Jespersen and others, and finally the view has also been expressed that this element is neither a noun nor an adjective but a separate part of speech, viz. an attribute noun. The very variety of opinions on the subject shows that the problem is one of the considerable difficulty. We shall become aware of that peculiar difficulty if we attempt to apply here the criteria serving to distinguish a noun from an adjective. It must be stated at once, though, that one criterion, namely that of degrees of comparison, but that in itself, does not prove that the element is not an adjective, since many adjectives, e.g. wooden, woolen, European, do not form degrees of comparison either. 6 The structure of the modern English 1971 P - 58 25

The criteria to be applied here are the following : 1has the first element of those phrases number distinctions? 2 Is it able in the cases when it denotes a human being to have a possessive form? 3 does it denote a substance or a property? Strangely enough all these questions are very hard to answer. As to (1) it must be stated that the first element usually appears only in one number form, which is either singular or plural, e.g. stone wall not stones wall; house fronts, not houses fronts; goods van not good van , etc. However that observation leads us nowhere. It is quite possible to argue that the first element is a noun, capable of number distinctions, but always appearing in a definite number form when making part of that phrase. So the application of criterion proves to be inconclusive. As to criterion we also run into difficulties. If, for example, we take the phrase the Einstein theory and ask whether the first element can take possessive form, we shall have to concede that of course it can; thus the phrase Einstein's theory is quite possible, and indeed, it occurs in actual texts. However, those who hold that it is not a noun, but either an adjective or an attributes noun (meaning a special parts of speech) argue that th e word in the phrase the Einstein theory is not the same word as in the phrase Einstein's theory and that the word in the first of these groups is incapable of taking a possessive form . Thus, it appears to be impossible to come to a definite conclusion on the basis of this criterion. Now we proceeded to criterion. How are we to decide whether to word Einstein in the former group denotes a substance or a property? There seems to be no perfectly convincing argument either way. We might say that it denotes a substance but this substance only serves to characterize the property of the thing denoted by the noun. Thus, we reach the conclusion that no perfectly objective result can be attained in trying to determine what part of speech the first element in such phrases is. This explains the existing difference of views on the subject and we are compelled to recognize that the question can only be solved in a somewhat subjective way, according as we start from one premise or another. If we start from the premise that 26

we shall not speak of homonyms, or indeed new parts of speech, unless, this is made strictly necessary by indisputable facts, we will stick to the view that the first element of such phrases as stone wall or speech sound is a noun in a special syntactical function. It is this view that appears to be the most plausible. The only morphological problems concerning adjectives is, than that of degrees of comparison. Degrees of comparison. The first question which arises here is , how many degrees of comparison has the English adjective (and, for that matter, the adjective in other language, such as Russian, Latin or German) If we take for example, the three forms, of an English adjective: large, larger, the largest, shall we say that they are , all three of them, degrees of comparison? In that case we ought to term them positive, comparative and superlative. Or shall we say that only the latter two are degrees of comparison (comparatives and superlative) whereas the first (large) does not express of any idea of comparison and is therefore not a degree of comparison at all? Both views have found their advocates in grammatical theory. Now , if we define a degree of comparison as a form expressing comparison of one object or objects with another in respect of a certain property, it would seem that the first of the three forms (large) should not be included, as it does not express any comparison. Then we should have only two degrees of comparison larger, the largest and a form a standing apart, coinciding with the stem from which the degrees of comparison are formed, and which may be described as the basic form. However, in a very few adjectives the basic form differs from the stem in sound. This difference is of some importance, though it is not reflected in the spelling. This applies to two adjectives in -ng, namely long and young ; their terms are long and young and the degrees of comparison formed from these stems are longer, longest, and younger, youngest. The basic forms, on the other hand, are long and young without the final which is impossible after -ng in modern literary English. A somewhat similar phenomenon is found in adjectives ending in -r or -re, such 27

as poor, pure, rare, sure . Their stems are different and suffixes of the degrees of comparison are added on to these stems, whereas the basic form loses its final -r , unless it is followed without pause by a word beginning with a vowel, as in the phrases poor idea, rare image and the like. Now it is well known that not every adjective has degrees of comparison. This may depend on two factor. One of these is not grammatical but semantic. Since degrees of comparison express a difference of degree in the same property, only those adjectives admit of degrees of comparison which denote properties capable of appearing in different degrees. Thus, it is obvious that, for example, the adjective middle has no degrees of comparison. The same might be said about many other adjectives, such as blind, deaf, died, etc. However, this should not be taken too absolutely. Occasionally we may meet with such as sentence as this : YOU CANNOT BE DEADER THAN DEAD. In a novel by E. Hemingway the hero compares the ways one and the same word sounds in different languages : Take dead, mort, muerto, and tot. Todd wa s the deadest of them all. But as a rule adjectives having such meanings do not appear in forms of comparison. A more complex problem in the sphere of degrees of comparison is that of the formations more difficult, the most difficult, or more beautiful, the most beautiful. The question is this : is more difficult an analytical comparative degree of the adjective difficult? In that case the word more would be an auxiliary word serving to make up that analytical form, and the phrase would belong to the sphere of morphology. Or is more difficult a free phrase , not different it its essential character from the phrase a very difficult or somewhat difficult? In that case the adjective difficult would have no degrees of comparison at all (forming degrees of comparison of this adjective by means of the inflections -er, -est is impossible), and the whole phrase would be a syntactical formation. The traditional view held both the practical and theoretical grammars until recently was that phrases of this type were analytical degrees of comparison. Recently , however , the view has been put forward that they 28

do not essentially differ from phrase the type very difficult, which, of course, nobody would think of treating as analytical forms. Let us examine the arguments that have been or may be put forward in favor of one and the other view. The view that formations of the type more difficult are analytical degrees of comparison may be supported by the following considerations : 1 The actual meaning of formations like more difficult, the most difficult does not differ from that of the degrees of comparison larger, the largest. 2 Qualitative adjectives, like difficult, express properties which be present in different degrees, and therefore they are bound to have degrees of comparison. The argument against such formations being analytical degrees of comparison would run roughly like this. No formation should be interpreted as an analytical form unless there are compelling reasons for it, and if there are considerations contradicting such a view. Now, in this particular case there are such considerations : (1) The words more and most have the same meaning in these phrases as in other phrases in which they may appear , e. g. more time , most people, etc. 2 Alongside of the phrases more difficult the most difficult there also the phrases less difficult, the least difficult, and there seems to be no sufficient reason for treating in the two sets of phrases in different ways, saying that more difficult as an analytical form while less difficult is not. Besides, the very fact that more and less , the most and least can equally well combine with difficult, would seem to show that they are free phrases and none of them is an analytical form.. The fact that more difficult stands in the same sense relation to difficult as larger to large is of course certain, but it should have no impact on the interpretation of the phrases more difficult, the most difficult from a grammatical viewpoint. Taking now a general view of both lines of argument, we can say that, roughly speaking, considerations of meaning tend towards recognizing such formations as analytical forms, whereas strictly grammatical considerations lead to the contrary view. It must be left to every student to decide what the way out this dilemma should 29

be. I t seems on the whole , that the tendency towards making linguistic something like an exact science which we are witnessing today should make us prefer the second view, based on strictly grammatical criteria. If that view is adopted the sphere of adjectives having degrees of comparison in Modern English will be very limited : besides the limitations imposed by the meaning of the adjectives (as shown above) There will be limitation depending on the ability of an adjectives to take the suffixes -er, and -est. 7 A few adjectives do not, as is well known, form any degrees of comparison by means of inflection. Their degrees of comparison by means of inflections. Their degrees of comparison are derived from a different root. these are good, better, best; bad worse worst, and a few more. Should these formations be acknowledged as suppletive forms of the adjectives good, bad, etc. or should they not? There seems no valid reason for denying them that status. The relation good better=large; larger is indeed of the same kind as the relation go : went = live: lived, where nobody has expressed any doubt about went being a superlative past tense form of the verb go. Thus, it is clear enough that there is every reason to take better, worse, and, etc. as suppletive degrees of comparison to the corresponding adjectives. When giving above the forms of the superlative degree we always added the definite article in parentheses. We did so because it remains somewhat doubtful whether the article belongs to the noun defined by the adjectives in the superlative degree, or weather it makes part and parcel of the superlative form itself. To find an answer to this question, it is apparently, necessary to know whether the definite article us ever used with a superlative form where it can not be said to belong to noun. Some examples, rare though they are , go some way to prove that the definite article can at least be said to have a tendency to become an appendix of the superlative form itself, rather than of the noun to which the adjectives in the superlative degree is an attribute. article is joined to the superlative form of an adverb, so that there is no noun to which it might, directly or inderectly, be said to belong. Here ia an example from a nine teenth century novel : The world hears most of the former, and talks of them the most but i doubt whether the letter are not the more numerous. (TROLLOPE) There are two phrases includding a superlative form here namely, hears most of the former, and talks of them the most . While there might be some doubt about the grammatical status of the first most (whether it is rather an object, that is , a substantivized adjective, or an adverbial modifier, that is an adverb), the second most gives rise to no such doubts: The verb talk cann not take any object of that kind. So the most id bound to be an adverb and in any case there is no noun whatever to which the article might be attached. So we must draw the concclusion thet the definite article has here become an integral part of the adverb's superlative form. Such instances are rare, but they do at least show that there is a tendency for the article to become an integral part of the superlative form, whteheter of an adjective or of an adverb. The basic meaning of the superlative is that of degree of property surpassing all the other objects mentioned or implied. However, there are cases when the meaning is defferent and merely a very high degree of a property is meant, without any comparison with other objects possessing that property. Thus in the sentence IT IS WITH THE GREATEST PLEASURE THAT WE LEARN OF... the phrase the greatest pleasure does not mean that that particular pleasure was greater than all other pleasures, but merely that it was veru great . The same may be said of the sentence IN BROWN"S ROOM WAS THE GREATEST DISORDER and of other sentences of these kind. This meaning of the form is usually described as the relative. iT can be recognized as such only owing to the context, and it seems to have ( in some cases, at least) a peculiar stylistic colouring being essentially uncolloquial. The forms of the superlative degree are never usef wit h the indefinite artilce. The phrase most + adjective on the other hand, may be used with thej indefinite 31

article and expresse in that case a very high degree of a property, without implying any comparison, e.g. a most satisfactory result . The meaning of the phrase is thus the same as of the superlative degree in its elative application. The possibility of using the phrase most + adjective with the indefinite article seems to be an additional argument in favour of the view that this is not an analytical form of the superlative but just a free phrase. ADJECTIVE AS A COMPOUND NOMINAL PREDICATE As we mentioned above that the predicate devides into : verbal predicate - (simple and compound) nominal predicate - (simple and compound) 1) If the compound nominal predicate consists of a link verb and an adjective we call thois predicate adlective. A rpedicate adjective is an adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject of the sentence. There are several linking verbs thjat have a special function when it comes to predicate adjectives. These verbs are special because they connect the subject with hte descriptive adjectives. The most sprea linking verb is to be. Here are some exmples to predicate adjectives with the linking verb to be : It had been difficult. (P.A. "TPOTH" p -15) "You are alone today" Fatty said. (P.A. "TPOTH" p -27) ... it was big and awkward and loaded wuth books. (P.A. "TPOTH" p - 27) Every muscle, every fibre, every cell was tired, dead tired. (J.L "WF" p - 56) "They are weak as water if you want to know" (J.L "WF" p - 59) No it is splendid, and it is terrible too (J.L "WF" p - 73) Graphes become shriveled in the Sun (J.L "WF" p - 78) Elizabeth was hungry (J.L "WF" p - 81) "My backpack is big, heavy and cool" (R.S "T I" p- 22) 32

When we see one of these verbs in sentence, we have a good chance of finding a predicate adjective in that sentence as well. 2) When finding examples to the adjective predicative we find out that the compound nominal predicate (expresed by an adjective) with linking verrb to be is more spread than the other link verbs. 3) The other linking verbs are as follows : is, become, seem, grow, turn, prove, look , feel, smeel, taste, sound, appear, stay, keep, an d, remain. Here are some examples to predicate adjectives with the other linking verbs: He just felt lonely (P.A. "TPOTH" p -57) And now you are becoming friendly (P.A. "TPOTH" p -58) Lanny felt easier (P.A. "TPOTH" p -103) The affair was growing mysterious (J.L "WF" p - 79) But the path began nowhere and ended nowhere and it remainded mystery...(J.L "WF" p - 82) Then they became friendly, and played about in the nervous, half - coy way with which....(J.L "WF" p - 85) His voice sounded louder and higher, as if he were ......(R.S "T I" p- 38) 4)The adjective when used as a compound nominal predicate it camm be the part of the nominal predicate : Subject + linking verb + adjective + noun or pronoun. For example: The orator was long-winded The belief is wide spread 7) There are few adjectives used only as an adjective predicate they are : afloat , fraid, aglow, alive, lone, asleep. For example : Buck became alive to a stirring of the new life in the forest other than that which the Yehats... (J.L "WF" p - 93) But he is not always alone (J.L "WF" p - 95) He had been sure he wa s alone He is alive (F. C. "TS" p - 111) In all these examples we see that the predicate adjective modifies the subject. In the sentence like Where they Chinese or had they been Chinese at any time?... .(P.A. HE, SHE, WE, IT, THEY, like I'm happy, You are good and , etc. Having predicate adjectives means that we can describe subjects without putting the adjectives before him. Instead of having to say The good boy followed by a verb, we can simply say The boy is good. In this sentence we can simply say identify that the boy is the subject, is is the linking verb, and good is the predicate adjective. There are som e verbs which though fully preserving theur concrete meaning, perform the function of link verbs and used with the predicate adjecyives. They are : to lie, to sit, to die, to marry, to return, to leave, to come,tostand, to fall, to go, to stay, etc. For example : Miss Maudue and I would sit quietly ion her porch, watchiong the sky go from yellow to red as the sun went down (H. L "TKAMB" p - 12) There goes the worst man iv the world (H. L "TKAMB" p - 21) Why reasonble people go mad when anything involving a Negro comes up is something I cant understand (H. L "TKAMB" p - 46) I stayed misarable for two days (H. L "TKAMB" p - 54) To approach the subject of link verb and predicatoive from another angle, we may say that if a verb is followed by a predicative it is, to some extend at least is neseccary because there are sentences in which the finite verb is a predicate in itself that is, contains some ifnformation about the subject whuich may be takenseperateluy but at the same time the verb is followed by an adjective predicate, ans as in so far a linking verbs. This is found in above given sentences 8 . The finite verb in such sentences conveys a meaninig of its own.but the main point of the sentences lied in the informtion comnveyed by predicate adjective. we might retell the meanoing of these in another way. the finite verb besides being s a predicate in itself, also performs the function of a link verb. nominal preicate , they form a special or a mixed type : predicates of these kind maybe termed double predicates. just how? I was trying not to show how frightene I got. (H. L "TKAMB" p - 13) . Compaer also te followin g sentence such as : I saw hinm go quite white (H. L "TKAMB" p - 25) . The lexicl meaning of the verb go is here almost wholly obliterated, as will also be seen by translating the entence into Uzbek, or indeeed any other languge. The essense of the predication is of course contained in the predicate adjetive white. Let us now look at a few more exmples of sentences with a predicative coming after a full predicate with secomndary parts attched to it. SHE HAD SET HER FEET UPON THAT ROAD, A SPOILED SELFISH AND UNTUIRED girll fullof youth warm of an emotion easily beweldered by life. (F. C. "T S" p -120) A SPOILED SELFISH AND UNTUIRED girll is a predcative coming after a fully developed predicate group consisting of the predicate itelf and an object and an adverbial modifier. That the group a spoiled, selfish and untried girl a predicative is a clear, because no other syntctical tie between this group and the preeceding words in the sentence can be imagined. It is a pecularity of this sentence that the predicative has three loose attiributes belonging to it: full of youth, warm of emotion and easily bewildered by life. They make this predicative group a spoiled selfish and untried girl very weighty indeed. It may also be noted that the predicative group a spoiled, selfish and untried girl full of youth, warm of emotion and easily bewildered by life represents the rheme of the sentence, while the preceeding words in the sentence represent it s theme. Indeed,, the contents, or the purpose of the sentence is not to inform the reader that she had set her feet on that road, but what kind of person she was at the time she did so. If the predicative (with its seondary parts) were to be dropped the communication value of the sentence would be basically changed, an in the ontext in which it stands its value would be reduced to nought. It should also be noted that the verb preeceding the predicative and therefore 36

performing (at least partly) the function of a link verb, may be in the passive voice. This is esspecially true of the verbs to find, to think, to report, as in the sentences He wa sfound gulty, He was reported dead, etc. As far as meaning is comnerned, there are seems to be no difference between the sentence. he was reported dead, and he was reported to be dead or betweenn the sentence he seemed clever and He seemed to be clever. Very often the predicative expressed by an adjective in English does not correspond to an adjective in Uzbek. It often cerrespondes to an adverb, serveing as n adverbial modifier. In this connection particular attention shoulld be paidto the following verb as they are often used in Every day in English: to look, to feel, to sound, to smell, to taste. For examples: It sounded strange to me (H. L "TKAMB" p - 15) . It taste s good (H. L "TKAMB" p - 99) . He is felling bad (H. L "TKAMB" p - 54) . As it seen from the examples given above all these predicative adjectives (with th e exception of the one that follwes the verb to taste) are rendered by adverbs in Uzbek. In conclusion of compound nominal predicate expressed by an adjective we can say that this important syntactic - semantic construction. We should study the features and the use of compound nominal predicate expressed by an adjective seperately. It will be useful for the student who wants to be teacher. And now we can below see the adjective as the part of compound verbal predicate. 1) compound verbal predicate is also expressed with the combinatiuon of adjective and infinitive. In all these exmples we can see compound verbal predicate is expressed by an adjective and infinitive 2)Compound verbal predicate is expressed with the combination of adjective and gerund. For example : One day we were busy playing The Radleys, we did not Atticus standing on the ....(H. L "TKAMB" p -11) . You were so busy looking at the fire......(H. L "TKAMB" p -33) . In the conclusion we can say that adjective predicate is widely used in sentences. It is an important syntactic - semantic structure. It exists in sentences with link verbs an the finite verbs with the meaning of a link verb. It also exists with main verbs with the combination of adjectives. That's why we think that it is omportant in the structure of the sentence. CONCLUSION. In our research work we studyied the adjective predicate as an an important 38

syntactic semantic structure and nalyzed it throughly. In studying the structure of main parts we are faced with the problem of subject and predicate.. We know that the subject and predicte the main parts of the sentences. We were interested how to definite the subject of a sentence. In trying to give a definition of the subject we formulated the structure of definition itself. It is found the contain the following items (1) tyhe meaning of the subject, ie, its relationsto the thought expressed in the sentence; (2) its syntactical reltions in the sentence; (3) its morphological realization. Acording these items we difened the subject like this:  It denotes the thing whose action or hracteristic is expressed by the predicate.  It is not dependent on any other part of the sentence  It may be expressed by different parts of speech, the most frequent ones being: a noun in the common case a personal pronoun in the nominative case, a demonstrative pronoun occasionally a substantivized adjective, a numeral, an infinitive and a gerund  It may also be expressed by a phrase. As we have seen above the definition of the subject given here includes mention of the predicate. The defination of the predicate, will have to include mention of the subject:  It denotes the ction of property of the thing expressed by the subject.  It is not dependant on any other part of the sentence.  Ways of expessing the predicate are varied and their structure will better be considered under the heading types of predicate. Here it will be suffise to say that among them are : a finite verb form, and a variety of phrases, for instance, phrases of the following patterns: Finite verb + infinitive; link verb + noun; link verb + adjective; Link verb + proposition + noun ; adjective combination + infinityive; adjective combination + gerund, etc. We also payed attention to the types of predicate in our research work. found out that the predicate maybe be classsified in two ways (1) Structural classification (2) morphological classification. According to the structural to the structural classification the predicate deviede the following types: Simple predicate, Compound predicate According to the morphological classification the predicate is deviede into the the following types: Verbal predicate and Nominal predicate We know that the simple predicate is expressed by a finite verb in a siple or a compound tense form. It generally denotes an action, sometimes it denotes a state which is represented as an action. The compound predicate consists of two parts a finite verb and some other part of speech: a noun , a pronoun, an adjective, a verbal (a participle , a gerund, an infinitive), etc. The second componenet is significant part of the predicate. The compound predicate may be nominal or verbal. The compound nominal predicate denotees the state or quality of the person or thing expressed by th e subject. The compound nominal predicate consist s of a link verb and the predicative. The compound verbal predicate can be devided into two types according to the meaninig of the finite verb:  The compound verbal modal predicate  The compound verbal aspect predicate The compound verbal modal predicate shows whether the action expressed by a non finite form of the verb is considered as possible, impossible, obligatory, necessary, desirable, etv. The compound verbal aspect predicate expresses the beginning, repitition, duration, or cessation of the action expressed by thenon finite form of the verb. In the second chapter we are interested an adjetiv e itself and the adjective predicate. We know that the adjectiveis a word expressing quality of a substance. 40

Morphological characteristics of the adjective is that it have dgree of comparioson. Morphological composition of the adjective is adjectives are diveded into simple derivative and compound adjectives:  simple adjective s are adjectives which have neither prefixes nor suffixes : good, red, black..  derivative adjectives are adjectives which have derivative elements , suffixes prefixes or both : beutiful, foolish, unkind...  compound adjectives are adjectiveas built from two or more stems snow - white, life-giving Adjectives classified into two classes: 1. Qualitative adjectives, 2. Realative adjectives. Qualitative adjectives denote qualities of a substance directly no through its relation to another substance, as size, shape , colour physical and mental qualities, qualities of general estimation: little, large, high , soft. Relative adjectives denote qualitiess of a substance thorough their relation to materials: silken, woolen, wooden, monthly, weekly.... Our main task here was to analyze the adjective predicates. We tried to analyze the adjective predicate throughly in uur reseach work by gethering more 800 examples choosen from artictic literature. We tried prove by analyzing the adjective predicate that it is an importantsyntactic semantic structure and it is in the most important part of formingthe sentence. Many scientists often offer in their books definition of a predicate adjectives as followes: an adjective that is used to predicate an attribute of the subject of the sentence. However, this definition often confuses tyhe students : the grammarjargon can be become jumped in technical definition like this. We think a more simple explation of predicate adjectives as is follows : modifies the subject of the sentence. In the sentence "The flowers are blue" the subject is the flowers , in this example blue is what modifies the subject the flowers, 41

and is connected to the subject by what is known a sa linking verb. . The predicate adjectives is linked to thhe subject with a linking verb like: to be, to become, to seem, to grow, to turn, to prove, to look, to feel,to smell, to taste, to sound, to appear, to stay, to keep, to remain, and etc. There some main verbs which loose their concrete meaning and perform the function of link verbs. They are to lie, to sit, to die, to return, to marry, to leave, to come, to stand, to fall, to go and etc. With these main verbs we form adjective predicates and they lose their meaning. besides being the part of compound nominal predicate , adjective predicate can be used in compound verbal predicate also. In compound verbal predicate is expressed with the combination of adjectives and infinitive, sometimes gerund. The effect of the predicate adjective is that having predicate adjectives means that we can describe subjects without putting the adjectives before them. Insted of having to say "The good boy" followed by a verb we can simply say the boy is good.
