Introduction Under the guidance of President ShavkatMirziyoyev, special attention is paid to the formation of harmoniously developed, highly educated, modem thinking generation, able to take responsibility for the fate of the Homeland. Therefore, the task of education, the task of rising up a new generation who is capable of national renaissance will remain the prerogative of the state and constitute a priority. At present great importance is attached to the study and teaching of foreign languages. The resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve system of foreign languages teaching” dated from 10 December 2012; the resolution of the Ministers’ Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About the Affirmation of the Education Standards on Foreign Languages in Education System” dated from 8 May 2013; The resolution No 4947of the President of Uzbekistan “Strategies of Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Five Priority Directions for 2017-2021 years” dated from 7 February 2017 are being implemented as well. Persistent works on raising awareness of the public concerning the essence and significance of the resolution". Aiming to implement the resolution, some special people in the government are working on preparing and approving new teaching plans and programs taking into account introduction of foreign language teaching from the initial classes of the public schools, ensuring its execution are being carried out. The Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Further Improving language learning in the Republic” PR №1875 Issued in December, 2012 has obliged educational boards to ensure that school-leavers master a foreign language as a means of communication in two forms - oral and written, therefore proficiency in speaking and reading are the desired skills. Of course, we will have the notion of the period. My qualification work is about one of the influential outstanding writers of American literature is Theodore Dreiser and his great work “Sister Carry”. Actuality of the work is Realistic views of Theodore Dreiser in his major novel “Sister Carry”. Investigations of the problem This writer's life and literary heritage were investigated by many scientists critics such as: Charles Walcutt, June Howard, John Conder and others. The aim and tasks of the qualification work is to show Theodore Dreiser's masterpiece novel „Sister Carry” to American literature and world literature. Methodological basis of this paper is based on the resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on December 10, 2012, “On measures to further improvement of foreign language learning system”, the resolution of the Minister`s Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Scientific novelty and practical value: there are a lot of scientific and critical articles studying Theodore Dreiser's criticism of society in the novel “Sister Carry” and some notes about them. CHAPTER I GENERAL REMARKS ABOUT REALISTIC PERIOD OF AMERICAN LITERATURE The first American literature was neither American nor really literature. It was not American because it was the work mainly of immigrants from England. It was not literature as we know it—in the form of poetry, essays, or fiction—but rather an interesting mixture of travel accounts and religious writings.The earliest colonial travel accounts are records of the perils and frustrations that challenged the courage of America’s first settlers. William Bradford’s History of Plymouth Plantation describes the cold greeting which the passengers on the ship Mayflower received when they landed on the coast of America in 1620: Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element 2 . Writers echoed the descriptions and exaggerations of Smith and Higginson. Their purpose was to attract dissatisfied inhabitants of the Old World across the ocean to the New. As a result, their travel accounts became a kind of literature to which many groups responded by making the hazardous crossing to America. The earliest settlers included Dutch, Swedes, Germans, French, Spaniards, Italians, and Portuguese. Of the immigrants who came to America in the first three quarters of the seventeenth century, however, the overwhelming majority was English. The English immigrants who settled on America’s northern seacoast, appropriately called New England, came in order to practice their religion freely. They were either Englishmen who wanted to reform the Church of England or people who wanted to have an entirely new church. The Puritans followed many of the ideas of the Swiss reformer John Calvin. Through the Calvinist influence the Puritans emphasized the then common belief that human beings were basically evil and could do nothing about it; and that many of them, though not all, would surely be condemned to hell.Over the years the Puritans built a way of life that was in harmony with their somber religion, one that stressed hard work, thrift, piety, and sobriety. These were the Puritan values that dominated much of the earliest American writing, including the sermons, books, and letters of such noted Puritan clergymen as John Cotton and Cotton Mather. During his life Cotton Mather wrote more than 450 works, an impressive output of religious writings that demonstrates that he was an example, as well as an advocate, of the Puritan ideal of hard work.During the last half of the seventeenth century the Atlantic coast was settled Doth north and south. Colonies—still largely English—were established. Among the colonists could be found poets and essayists, but no novelists. The absence of novelists is quite understandable: the novel form had not even developed fully in England; the Puritan members of the colonies believed that fiction ought not to be read because it was. By definition, not true. The American poets who emerged in the seventeenth century adapted the style of established European poets to the subject matter confronted in a strange, new environment. Anne Bradstreet was one such poet.Born and educated in England, Anne Bradstreet both admired and imitated several English poets. The influence of these English poets did not diminish when Mrs. Bradstreet, at age eighteen, came to America in 1630. The Raiment in which she wrote, however, did" constant; a developed nation was a relative wilderness. When by the ruins oft I past My sorrowing eyes aside did cast. And here and there the places spy where oft I and long did lie: Here stood that trunk, and there that chest, There laid that store I counted best. My pleasant things in ashes lie,

And they behold no more shall I. Mrs. Bradstreet lessens this despair by asserting that earthly possessions are no more than “dunghill mists” when compared to the “richly furnished” house of Heaven. In her rejection of wordily riches, Anne Bradstreet shared a common outlook with her New England neighbors. Her ability to capture the colonial experience in poetry established her place as one of America’s most notable early writers.Michael Wigglesworth, another important colonial poet, achieved wide popularity among his contemporaries with his gloomy poem entitled “The Day of Doom.” First published in 1662, “The Day of Doom” is a description of the Day of Judgment. It tells of. The day when God will decide re airs". Many people will try in vain to escape their final judgment: Some hide themselves in caves and delves, in places underground: Some rashly leap into the deep, to escape by being drowned: Some to the rocks (O senseless blocks!) and woody mountains run. That there they might this fearful sight, and dreaded presence shun. Wigglesworth concludes that escape will be impossible. Inevitably, man must and will accept his fate on “The Day of Doom.” In the colonies south of Wigglesworth’s New England, less gloomy poets and essayists wrote. But the southern colonies did not have the printing facilities found

in New England, and no poet elsewhere achieved the popularity of Michael Wigglesworth.Twentieth century literary scholars have discovered the manuscripts of a contemporary of Wigglesworth named Edward Taylor who produced what is perhaps the finest seventeenth century American verse. Writing much of his poetry as a mental exercise—or “Meditation”—to prepare him for his duties as a minister, Taylor filled his works with vivid imagery. Here, for example, are Taylor's descriptions of the unworthy heart of man: A sty of filth, a trough of washing swill, A dunghill pit, a puddle of mere slime. A nest of vipers, hive of hornet's stings, A bag of poison, civet box of sins. Taylor never published any of his poetry In fact, the first of Edward Taylor's colon a poetry did not reach print until there decade of the twentieth century.Taylor, like many of the early a writers, was an immigrant whose influenced by hisExperiences in England. As the decease passed new generations of American-born writers became important. Boston. Massachusetts, was the birthplace of one such American-born writer. His name was Benjamin Franklin 3 . Benjamin Franklin was a brilliant, industrious, and versatile man. Starting as a poor boy in a family of seventeen children, he became famous on both sides of the Atlantic as a statesman, scientist, and author. Despite his fame, however, he always remained a man of industry and simple tastes.Franklin's writings range from informal sermons on thrift to urbane essays. He wrote gracefully as well as clearly, with a wit which often gave an edge to his words. Though the style he formed came from imitating two noted English essayists, Addison and Steele, he made it into his own. His most famous work is his Autobiography.Franklin’s 3 See Philip L. Autobiography is many things. First of all it is an inspiring account of a poor boy’s rise to a high position. Franklin tells his story modestly, omitting some of the honors he received and including mention of some of his misdeeds, his errors as he called them.He is not afraid to show himself as being much less than perfect, and he is resigned to the fact that his misdeeds will often receive a punishment of one sort or another. Viewing himself with objectivity, Franklin offers his life story as a lesson to others. It is a positive lesson that teaches the reader to live a useful life. In fact, the Autobiography is a how-to-do-it book, a book on the art of self- improvement. The practical world of Benjamin Franklin stands in sharp contrast to the fantasy world created by Washington Irving. Named after George Washington, the first president of the United States, Irving provided a young nation with humorous, fictional accounts of the colonial past. Many of Irving’s other writings take the reader to foreign lands, especially to Spain at the time of the Moors. But his tales of colonial America remain his most enduring contributions to American and world literature.The Dutch culture in colonial New York was of particular interest to Irving. He published a mock serious history of the New York of colonial times which shows his sly humor and general good nature. This same geographicarea provides the background for Irving’s best known work, the short story “Rip Van Winkle.” “Rip Van Winkle” is a humorous tale of a lazy villager in the mountains of upstate New York. While hunting, Rip meets some mischievous Dutch gnomes. He drinks with them and through the power of the drink falls asleep for twenty years. On awakening he makes his unsteady way back to his village. Rip finds the village greatly changed. When he went to sleep it was still under British rule. Now it is a part of the United States, the new nation formed as a result of the Revolutionary War. Though he is confused by the changes that have come with democracy, he gets used to them. By the end of the story he is back at the village tavern, drinking and ready to tell any stranger about his remarkable slumber.Through “Rip Van

Winkle” and several other stories Irving helped to create what might be called an American mythology. This mythology is made up of stories of the American past so widely read and told that nearly every American recognizes them. Another writer, James Fennimore Cooper, contributed two of the great stock figures of American mythology: the daring frontiersman and the bold Indian. Cooper’s exciting stories of the American frontier have won a large audience for his books in many parts of the world. Some students of literature may find fault with the artificial speech and actions of Cooper’s heroines. Yet the figures in his novels helped create that part of American mythology most popular today: the story of the cowboy and the winning of the American West. While prose was contributing to the development of an American mythology, the first poetry in the United States was also being written. Philip Freneau, one of the first poets of the new nation, wrote in a style which owed something to English models. This debt can be seen in the elaborate language and the savoring of emotion which characterizes much of Freneau’s verse. His subject matter, however, makes him a truly American poet. In collaboration with Hugh Brackenridge, another early national writer, Freneau wrote a college commencement poem in 1772 entitled “The Rising Glory of America.” The future of his country was always a subject of interest for poet and citizen Freneau.During the Revolutionary War Freneau became an ardent supporter of the American cause. While on sea duty he was captured by the British and placed aboard a prison ship, an experience which inspired a long poem entitled "The British Prison Ship.” He wrote a number of other long poems, but he was at his best in his short lyrics, such as "The Wild Honey Suckle." Throughout the world many people think of Americans as being outgoing, materialistic and optimistic: outgoing, because they join clubs, take part in movements, talk with their neighbors across the hall or over the back fence; materialistic, because they are eager for new automobiles and bigger television sets; optimistic, because they believe that they have the power to do good things in a good world, because they seem to say “yes” to life instead of “no." There is some truth in this general impression, though less with the passing of each year. But American literature at its best has rarely been the product of such Americans. Even in the 18th century, with its prevalent belief in the perfectibility of man through the perfecting of his institutions, there were skeptics; and the 19th century contained its great and pessimistic savers of “No! in thunder” as well as the. Great affirmers like Emerson and Whitman. By the end of the 19th century the complacent, optimistic tone of the popular poets and novelists had been challenged by Mark Twain, Crane and James, to name only the best known; and the enduring writing of the first quarter of the 20th century is, more often than not, critical of the quality of American society. Its tone is satirical; the stereotyped American is made a figure of fun or an object of pathos; the American dream is shown to be illusory. The occasional yea-sayer like Sandburg stands out almost as an anachronism. Of the writers’ in this section, Theodore Dreiser was perhaps the first important new American voice of the 20th century. His naturalism and his choice of subject often echo his predecessor, Stephen Crane, but his style and methods are very different. There is none of the poetic symbolism, none of the probing of psychological depths and neuroses. Perhaps because of his childhood of bitter poverty in an immigrant family which suffered all the deprivations brought about by lack of education, skill and status, Dreiser was more concerned with society's effect on a person than with man apart from his. In his novels, Dreiser tried to treat human beings scientifically, rather than intuitively with the poetic insight so much prized by writers of the 19th century. He saw that life is hard and found, in social Darwinism and in the theory of Zola

and the naturalists, the explanation that man is the product of social processes and forces and of an inevitable kind of social evolution. However inadequate such an answer to life may be, his books struck a chord of response in many puzzled Americans who recognized that a gulf existed between the dream that America promised on the one hand, and the reality of graft, hypocrisy and callousness that was apparent, on the other. Dreiser’s tone is always serious, never satirical or comic. It is fitting, then, that his best works are based on his own experiences or those of his immediate family, like Sister Carrie, or are fictional re-creations of actual happenings, like his well-known novel, An American Tragedy. In retrospect, Dreiser’s work is significant, in spite of some obvious faults, for its stubborn honesty and realism—traits which were to appear again in the American writers who succeeded him on the literary scene. In their opposing ways, the two most important poets of the first decades of the 20th century, Edward Arlington Robinson and Carl Sandburg, also sought to explore the quality of American life and to report on it with Dreiser’s kind of truthfulness, now, as from the beginning, American poets tended to divide sharply into two groups: traditionalists and innovators. Robinson and Sandburg in the 20th century represent these two poles as strikingly as did Poe and Whitman in the 19th century. Though less read now than Robert Frost, who first published during this period but whose major influence belongs to a later time, Robinson has the same New England background and equals some of Frost’s best qualities as a poet and reporter on the world. Robinson’s tone is, however, characteristically ironic and somewhat aloof and detached, even when he evinces an undercurrent of compassion. In his best-known poems, such as “Richard Cory” and “Mingier Cheery," Robinson uses conventional meter and rhyme to paint wry, condensed, often startling vignettes, which illustrate men’s individualized responses to a life that he, like Dreiser, saw as hard. Elsewhere, as in “Mr. Flood's Party," Robinson comes closer to the dramatic narrative form that Frost perfected, for example, in "The Death of the Hired Man.” Robinson also made use of traditional themes, such as the Arthurian legends, but all of his poems are conventional and traditional,

whether in the tradition of Wordsworth's "The Leech Gatherer,” or of Tennyson’s "Idylls of the King.” What is typical of the 20th century in Robinson is the tone of pessimism, the undercurrent of disillusionment with his heritage and his present. At the opposite pole of poetic vision and technique is Carl Sandburg, a breaker of conventions akin to Whitman. His background was, in important ways, like Dreiser’s: he, too, came of immigrant stock; he, too, grew up in difficult circumstances, though in a much happier and more productive home. Instead of finding in social Darwinism an explanation of what was wrong with society, he saw it in the defects of political institutions, and his own socialism made him hopeful. It also led him to see greatness in the ordinary man and in that man’s capacity to create a society in which inequalities would be erased, in which each man's potential would be realized, and in which the chasm between American dream and reality would be bridged. In Sandburg’s poems one hears echoes of 19th-century idealism—echoes of Emerson as well as Whitman. One also hears, in 20th-century dress, the 18th century's faith in political and social change as roads to an improved quality of life. In his poetry Sandburg “chants,” to use Whitman’s word, a hymn to America and its people—not to the stereotype, but to the ideal. Sandburg’s form is the free verse that Whitman employed, with its lines of irregular length, its looser speech rhythms, and the absence of end rhyme. At its best it has the same grand cadences and front rhymes1 in his shorter poems. Sandburg even tends to use Whitman’s movement from short to gradually swelling long lines followed by a return to shorter lines to produce poems like the lip of a wave. He also uses Whitman’s scheme of lists and catalogues, as well as Whitman's praise of the low and seemingly trivial. Thus, in the first quarter of the 20th century, Sandburg, like Whitman before him, stood for innovation and rejection of conventional forms. During this period, he wrote some of his greatest poems, paeans of praise to Chicago which match, in style and fervor, those of Whitman about Manhattan.

The important fact of the second decade of the century was, of course, World War I, which, as we look back, seems to have been a kind of watershed— innocence on one side, attention to grim reality on the other. Actually, as earlier literature clearly demonstrates, the best American writers had crossed from one. Side to the other decades earlier. Like the stereotype of the optimistic, materialistic, hail-fellow-well-meet American, the innocent, romantic dreamer was never found in the ranks of our great writers. Nevertheless, the war, which eventually engaged 4.000.000 Americans, changed the outlook of all Americans in very significant ways. It took away some of their provincialism; it intensified the pessimism and disenchantment with what was peculiarly American; and it led to widespread expatriation. Most of what are considered the masterpieces of American writing in the 20th century were written in Europe, or out of a writer’s experience as an expatriate. What the Lost Generation of Gertrude Stein (herself an expatriate) had lost, to a degree true only of Henry James in an earlier time, was its sense of being a part of American society. Sinclair Lewis, John Dos Pesos, Ernest Hemingway, e. e. Cummings, William Carlos Williams, and Scott Fitzgerald—like Eliot and Pound—all spent long periods of their lives in Europe. Since none of the best writers was closer to combat than a training camp or the ambulance corps, it was not the war itself, but long exposure to European culture, which intensified the old current of criticism of American life. Of the writers we are considering as typical of the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, only Steinbeck and Mencken did not share this experience of expatriation, a fact Mencken even felt obliged to defend. 1.2 THE FACTS OF THEODORE DREISER’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY. American author, outstanding representative of naturalism, whose novels depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreiser's novels were held to be amoral,

and he battled throughout his career against censorship and popular taste. This started with Sister Carrie (1900). It was not until 1981 that the work was published in its original form. Dreiser's principal concern was with the conflict between human needs and the demands of society for material success. Theodore Dreiser was boom in Terre Haute, Indiana, the ninth of ten children. His parents were poor. John Paul Dreiser, his father, a devout Catholic German immigrant, had attempted to establish his own woolen mill in the 1860s, but after it was destroyed in a fire, the family lived in poverty. Dreiser's mother, Sarah Maria Schwab, was an American-born Mennonite.As the family moved from town to town, Dreiser's schooling remained erratic. He left home when he was 16 and worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher, he was able to spend the year 1889-1890 at Indiana University. A voracious reader, the impact of such writers as Hawthorne, Poe, Balzac, Herbert Spencer, and Freud influenced his thought and his reaction against organized religion 4 . In 1892 Dreiser started to work for the Chicago Globe, and moved to a better position with the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. During this period he wrote the short story 'Nigger Jeff,' probably based on a lynching he witnessed. The story appeared in Ainslie (November 1901), a small monthly journal, and collected in Free and Other Stories (1918). In 1894 Dreiser published the Republic an article, 'Ten-Foot Drop,' about lynching outside St. Louis. Unfortunately, Dreiser chose to use the "N-word" in the title of the story and today it is no longer anthologized in college surveys of American literature. In the manuscript its title was 'A .Victim of Justice.'Dreiser moved to New York City late in 1894. Through the connections of his older brother Paul Dresser (1858-1906), an actor, singer and songwriter, he was employed as editor of a music-publishing magazine for a period. In 1898 he married Sara White, a Missouri schoolteacher; the marriage was unhappy. He separated permanently from her in 1909, but never earnestly sought a divorce. the desire for women led him to с carry ос several affairs at once. While in Kentucky reporting on coal miners' strike, he charged with adultery. His relationship with Yvette Sleekly Eastman is recorded in Dearest Wilding by Yvette Eastman (1995) - she was 16 and Dreiser 40 years older when they first met in 1929. Yvette was the stepdaughter of a female acquaintance. Dreiser seduced Yvette when she was seventeen. "I lay down on the sheet," she recalled, "hoping this part of the 'business' would soon be over with." Yvette was hired as Dreiser's secretary and put to work on his scientific essays. She remained his friend long after the sexual relationship had ended. As a novelist Dreiser made his debut with Sister Carrie, a powerful account of a young working girl’s rise to success and her slow decline. The story was partly based on the life of his sister. "She was eighteen years of age, bright, timid and full of the illusions of ignorance and youth. Whatever touch of regret at parting characterized her thoughts it was certainly not for advantages now being given up. A gush of tears at her mother's farewell kiss, a touch in the throat when the cars clacked by the flour mill where her father worked by the day, a pathetic sigh as the familiar green environs of the village passed in review, and the threads which bound her so lightly to girlhood and home were irretrievably broken." (from the 1981 edition) The president of the publishing company, Frank Doubleday, disapproved of the work - Dreiser illuminated the flaws of his characters but did not judge them and allowed vice to be rewarded instead of punished. No attempt was made to promote the book. Sister Carrie was reissued in 1907 and it became one of the most famous novels in literary history. Among its admirers was H.L. Mencken, an aspiring journalist, whom Dreiser had hired as a ghost-writer in his paper. William Wyler's film version, starring Laurence Olivier and Jennifer Jones, was made at the height of the Cold War and McCarthy era. Paramount executives delayed the releasing of the

film - they thought the picture was not good for America and it was a flop. "It was a depressing story", said Wyler, "and it might not have been a success anyway." 5 The 500 sold copies of his first novel and family troubles drove Dreiser to the verge of suicide. He worked at a variety of literary jobs, and as an editor-in-chief of three women's magazines until 1910, when he was forced to resign, because of an office love affair. Jennie Gerhardt (1911), Dreiser's second novel, told the story of a young woman, Jennie, who is seduced by a senator. She bears a child out of wedlock but sacrifices her own interests to avoid harming her lover's career. Again Dreiser drew on the life of his sisters. A passage in which Jennie's lover Lester Kane, the son of a wealthy family, tells her about contraceptives, was removed by Ripley Hitchcock, the editor at Harper & Brothers. Jennie Gerhardt was followed by’ novels based on the life of the American transportation magnate Charles T. Yerkes, The Financier (1912), and The Titan (1914), which show the influence of the evolutionary ideas of Herbert Spencer and Nietzsche's concept of the b barmen’s. Last volume of the Frank Cowper wood trilogy, The Stoic, was finished in 1945. "At the height of his success, when he had settled old scores and could easily have become the smiling public man, he chose instead to rip the whole fabric of charged with adultery. His relationship with Yvette Sleekly Eastman is recorded in Dearest Wilding by Yvette Eastman (1995) - she was 16 and Dreiser 40 years older when they first met in 1929. Yvette was the stepdaughter of a female acquaintance. Dreiser seduced Yvette when she was seventeen. "I lay down on the sheet," she recalled, "hoping this part of the 'business' would soon be over with." Yvette was hired as Dreiser's secretary and put to work on his scientific essays. She remained his friend long after the sexual relationship had ended. As a novelist Dreiser made his debut with Sister Carrie, a powerful account of a young working girl's rise to success and her slow decline. The story was partly based on the life of his sister. of the illusions of ignorance and youth. Whatever touch of regret at parting characterized her thoughts it was certainly not for advantages now being given up. A gush of tears at her mother's farewell kiss, a touch in the throat when the cars clacked by the flour mill where her father worked by the day, a pathetic sigh as the familiar green environs of the village passed in review, and the threads which bound her so lightly to girlhood and home were irretrievably broken." (from the 1981 edition) The president of the publishing company, Frank Doubleday, disapproved of the work - Dreiser illuminated the flaws of his characters but did not judge them and allowed vice to be rewarded instead of punished. No attempt was made to promote the book. Sister Carrie was reissued in 1907 and it became one of the most famous novels in literary history. Among its admirers was H.L. Mencken, an aspiring journalist, whom Dreiser had hired as a ghost-writer in his paper. William Wyler's film version, starring Laurence Olivier and Jennifer Jones, was made at the height of the Cold War and McCarthy era. Paramount executives delayed the releasing of the film - they thought the picture was not good for America and it was a flop.

1.3 THEODORE DREISER’S LITERARY CAREER Dreiser published his first novel, Sister Carrie, in 1900. Portraying a changing society, he wrote about a young woman who flees rural life for the city (Chicago) and struggles with poverty, complex relationships with men, and prostitution. It sold poorly and was not widely promoted; it was considered controversial because of moral objections to his featuring a country girl who pursues her dreams of fame and fortune through relationships with men. The book has since acquired a considerableHis second novel, Jennie Gerhardt, was published in 1911. His featuring young woman as protagonists dramatized the social changes of urbanization, as young people moved from rural villages to cities.Dreiser’s first commercial success was An American Tragedy, published in 1925. From 1892, when Dreiser began work as a newspaperman, he had begun"to observe a certain type of crime in the United States that proved very common. It seemed to spring from the fact that almost every young person was possessed of an ingrown ambition to be somebody financially and socially." "Fortune hunting became a disease" with the frequent result of a peculiarly American kind of crime, a form of "murder for money", when "the young ambitious lover of some poorer girl" found "a more attractive girl with money or position" but could not get rid of the first girl, usually because of pregnancy.1141Dreiser claimed to have collected such stories every year between 1895 and 1935. He based his novel on details and setting of the 1906 murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette in upstate New York, which attracted widespread attention from newspapers. While the novel sold well, it was also criticized for his portrayal of a man without morals who commits a sordid murder. The novel was adapted as a film in 1931, by the same name, and again in 1951 (this time it was titled A Place in the Sun). Though known primarily as a novelist, Dreiser also wrote short stories, publishing his first collection, Free and Other Stories, in 1918, made up of 11 stories.His story, "My Brother Paul", was a kind of biography of his older brother, Paul

Dreiser also wrote poetry. His poem, "The Aspirant" (1929), continues his theme of poverty and ambition: a young man in a shabby furnished room describes his own and the other tenants' dreams, and asks "why? Why?" The poem appeared in The Poetry Quartos, collected and printed by Paul Johnston, and published by Random House in 1929.Dreiser was often forced to battle against censorship, because his depiction of some aspects of life, such as sexual promiscuity, offended authorities and challenged popular standards of acceptable opinion. Politically, Dreiser was involved in several campaigns against social injustice. This included the lynching of Frank Little, one of the leaders of thelndustrial Workers of the World, the Sacco and Vanzetti case, the deportation of Emma Goldman, and the conviction of the trade union leader Tom Mooney. In November 1931, Dreiser led the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners to the coalfields of southeastern Kentucky, where they took testimony from coal miners in Pineville and Harlan on the pattern of violence against the miners and their unions by the coal operators known as the Harlan County War. Dreiser was a committed socialist, and wrote several non-fiction books on political issues. These included Dreiser Looks at Russia (1928), the result of his 1927 trip to the Soviet Union, and two books presenting a critical perspective on capitalist America, Tragic America (1931) and America Is Worth Saving (1941). He praised the Soviet Union under during the Great Terror and alliance with Hitler. Theodore Dreiser joined the American Communist Party in August 1945. Although less politically radical friends, such as H.L. Mencken, spoke of Dreiser's relationship with communism as an "unimportant detail in his life," Dreiser's biographer Jerome Loving notes that his political activities since the early 1930s had "clearly been in concert with ostensible communist aims with regard to the working class."Dreiser died on December 28, 1945 in Hollywood at the age of 74.

CHAPTER II.REALISTIC VIEWS OF THEODORE DREISER IN THE NOVEL “SISTER CARRY”. 2.1 Basic plot of the novel “Sister carry” Sister Carrie (1900) is a novel by Theodore Dreiser about a young country girl who moves to the big city where she starts realizing her own American D-ea- first as a mistress to men that she perceives as superior, and later becoming a famous actress. It has been called the "greatest of all American,'' as" novels.” Dissatisfied with life in her rural Wisconsin home, 18-year-old Caroline "Sister Carrie" Meyer takes the train to Chicago, where her older sister Minnie, and Minnie's husband, Sven Hanson, have agreed to take her in. On the train, Carrie meets Charles Drogue, a traveling salesman, who is attracted to her because of her simple beauty and unspoiled manner. They exchange contact information, but upon discovering the "steady round of toil" and somber atmosphere at her sister's flat, she writes to Drogue and discourages him from calling on her there. Carrie soon embarks on a quest for work to pay rent to her sister and her husband, and takes a job running a machine in a shoe factory. Before long, however, she is shocked by the coarse manners of both the male and female factory workers, and the physical demands of the job, as well as the squalid factory conditions, begin to take their toll. She also senses Minnie and Sven's disapproval of her interest in Chicago's recreational opportunities, particularly the theatre. One day, after an illness that costs her job, she encounters Drogue on a downtown street. Once again taken by her beauty, and moved by her poverty, he encourages her to dine with him, where, over sirloin and asparagus, he persuades her to leave her sister and move in with him. To press his case, he slips Carrie two ten dollar bills, opening a vista of material possibilities to her. The next day, he rebuffs her feeble attempts to return the money, taking her shopping at a Chicago department store and securing a jacket she covets and some shoes. That night, she writes a good bye note to Minnie and moves in with Drogue.

Drogue installs her in a much larger apartment, and their relationship intensifies as Minnie dreams about her sister's fall from innocence. She acquires a sophisticated wardrobe and, through his offhand comments about attractive women, sheds her provincial mannerisms, even as she struggles with the moral implications of being a kept woman. By the time Drogue introduces Carrie to George Hurst wood, the manager of Fitzgerald and Moy's - a respectable bar that Drogue describes as a "way-up, swell place" - her material appearance has improved considerably. Hurst wood, unhappy with god distant from his social- climbing wife and children, instantly becomes infatuated with Carrie’s youth and beauty, and before long they start an affair, communicating and meeting secretly in the expanding, anonymous city. One night, Drogue casually agrees to find an actress to play a key role in an amateur theatrical presentation of Augustan Daly’s melodrama, “Under the Gaslight," for his local chapter of the Elks. Upon returning home to Carrie, he encourages her to take the part of the heroine. Unknown to Drogue, Carrie long has harbored theatrical ambitions and has a natural aptitude for imitation and expressing pathos. The night of the production - which Hurst wood attends at Drogue’s invitation - both men are moved to even greater displays of affection by Carrie’s stunning performance.The next day, the affair is uncovered: Drogue discovers he has been cuckolded, Carrie learns that Hurst wood is married, and Hurst wood’s wife, Julia, learns from acquaintances that Hurst wood has been out driving with another woman and deliberately excluded her from the Elks theatre night. After a night of drinking, and despairing at his wife’s financial demands and Carrie’s rejection, Hurst wood stumbles upon a large amount of cash in the unlocked safe in Fitzgerald and Moy's offices. In a moment of poor judgment, he succumbs to the temptation to embezzle a large sum of money. Inventing a false pretext of Drogue’s sudden illness, he lures Carrie onto a train and escapes with her to Canada. Once they arrive in Montreal, Hurst wood’s guilty conscience - and a private eye - induce him to return most of the stolen funds, but he realizes that he cannot return to Chicago. Hurst wood mollifies Carrie by agreeing to marry her,

and the couple move to New York City.In New York, Hurst wood and Carrie rent a flat where they live as George and Carrie Wheeler. Hurst wood buys a minority interest in a saloon and, at first, is able to provide Carrie with a satisfactory - if not lavish - standard of living. The couple’ grow distant, however, as Hurst wood abandons any pretense of fine manners toward Carrie, and she realizes that Hurst wood no longer is the suave, powerful manager of his Chicago days. Carrie’s dissatisfaction only increases when she meets Robert Ames, a bright young scholar from Indiana and her neighbor's cousin, who introduces her to the idea that great art, rather than showy materialism, is worthy of admiration. After only a few years, the saloon’s landlord sells the property and Hurst wood’s business partner expresses his intent to terminate the partnership. Too arrogant to accept most of the job opportunities available to him, Hurst wood soon discovers that his savings are running out and urges Carrie to economize, which she finds humiliating and distasteful. As Hurst wood lounges about, overwhelmed by apathy and foolishly gambling away most of his savings, Carrie turns to New York’s theatres for employment and becomes a chorus girl. Once again, her aptitude for theatre serves her well, and, as the rapidly aging Hurst wood declines into obscurity, Carrie begins to rise from chorus girl to small speaking roles, and establishes a friendship with another chorus girl, Lola Osborne, who begins to urge Carrie to move in with her. In a final attempt to prove himself useful, Hurst wood becomes a scab, driving a Brooklyn streetcar during a streetcar operator’s strike. His ill-fated venture, which lasts only two days, prompts Carrie to leave him; in her farewell note, she encloses twenty dollars.Hurst wood ultimately joins the homeless of New York, taking odd jobs, falling ill with pneumonia, and finally becoming a beggar. Reduced to standing in line for bread and charity, he commits suicide in a flophouse. Meanwhile, Carrie achieves stardom, but finds that money and fame do not satisfy her longings or bring her happiness and that nothing will. Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie was not widely accepted after it was published, although it was not completely withdrawn by its publishers, as some

sources say it was. Neither was it received with the harshness that Dreiser reported. For example, the Toledo Blade reported that the book "is a faithful portraiture of the conditions it represents, showing how the tangle of human life is knotted thread by thread" but that it was “too realistic, too somber to be altogether pleasing”. There is also the receipt of sale which Doubleday sent to Dreiser showing that safer Carrie was not withdrawn from of the shelves, reporting that 456 copies of the 1,008 copies printed were sold. Sister Carrie evoked different responses from the critics, and although the book did not sell well among the general public, it often received positive reviews. Some of the reason for lack of sales came from a conflict between Dreiser and his publishers, who did little to promote the book.1141 Despite this, critics did praise the book, and a large number of them seemed most affected by the character of Hurst wood, such as the critic writing for the New Haven Journal Courier, who proclaimed, “One of the most affecting passages is where Hurst wood falls, ruined, disgraced”.1151 Edna Kenton in the Chicago Daily News said in 1900 that Sister Carrie is “well worth reading simply for this account of Hurst wood". Reviews mentioned the novel’s realistic depiction of the human condition. A 1901 review in The Academy said that Sister Carrie was “absolutely free from the slightest trace of sentimentality or pettiness, and dominated everywhere by a serious and strenuous desire for truth”. The London Express claimed that realism made the book appealing: “It is a cruel, merciless story, intensely clever in its realism, and one that will remain impressed in the memory of the reader for many a long day”. The novel has also been praised for its accurate depiction of the protests in New York and the city life in Chicago. Negative response to the novel came largely from the book’s sexual content, which made Sister Carrie, in the words of the Omaha Daily Bee in 1900. “not a book to be put into the herds of every reader indiscriminately”. Another review in Life criticized Carrie’s success, and warned ‘Such girls, however, as

imagine that they can follow in her footsteps will probably end their days on the Island or in the gutter». The book was also criticized for never mentioning the name of God Several critics compiling made the book sound as if the main character is a nun. The title of the book was considered by The Newark Sunday News to be the Fakes: т -g about the book” because it “does not bear the faintest relation to the story” Similarly, Frederic Taber Cocoa' in The Bookman deader countess and misleading title”. Other common complaints were about the length of the book and In fact, the novel and modem ideas of morality helped to produce a movement in which the literary generation of its time was found “detaching itself from its predecessor. Yet there still remained some who disapproved of Dreiser’s immoral, atypical story line. David E. E. Sloan argued that Dreiser’s novel undermined the general consensus that hard work and virtue bring success in life.Though Dreiser has been criticized for his writing style and lack of formal education, Sister Carrie remains an influential example of naturalism and realism. The literary scene which Dreiser entered in 1900 with the publication of Sister Carrie was still largely controlled by the conventions of what was later to be designated as "The Genteel Tradition." The purpose of literature, most publishers and reviewers held, was to appeal to man's "higher nature," to inspire him through the depiction of man's capacity to achieve the ethical life to seek such a life for

himself. The commonplace and sordid in human existence played little role within this aim, while felicities of style, which constituted the "art" of the work, were held to be inseparable from ethical power. Sister Carrie constituted a direct challenge to these assumptions. While some reviewers did indeed note its "extraordinary power" and that its story "has all the interest of fact, and the terrible inevitableness of fact," most seized upon the central situation of the novel—that of a young girl who has two illicit sexual relationships without suffering either material loss or moral degeneration—as immediate grounds for dismissal of the novel. "Squalid," "Neither a pleasant nor an edifying book," "The name of God is not mentioned from cover to cover, a significant omission" were characteristic comments about the work, while "annoying anachronisms and blunders in English" constituted the thrust of another large number of negative remarks. In short, the novel was neither uplifting nor well-written, and was thus "Not a book to be put into the hands of every reader indiscriminately." Dreiser complained bitterly about the negative impact of The Genteel Tradition on the critical reception of Sister Carrie in a brief essay of 1903 entitled "True Art Speaks Plainly." "The extent of all reality is the realm of the author pen," he concluded, "and a true picture of life, honestly and reverentially set down, is both moral and artistic, whether it offends the conventions or not." Dreiser's need to struggle for acceptance of his work on its own grounds, however, was to continue until the great success of An American Tragedy’s. Carrie's riding along when suddenly the dude sitting behind her strikes up a conversation. She's a bit hesitant to respond at first because of her "maidenly reserve," but she's feeling daring what with being away from home and all, so she starts chatting. • He can tell this is probably her first trip to the city even though she tries to pretend like she's some big world traveler. We learn that this guy (whose name is Drogue, by the way) is a drummer. No, not like Animal from the Muppets—in a nineteenth-century kind of way, when drummer meant traveling salesman.

• Drogue is one very well-dressed guy. In fact, Carrie feels a bit self-conscious about her own simple clothes after checking out his fancy threads. Drogue’s not tripping about her garb, though, and tells Carrie about the places she needs to check out, like Lincoln Park and Michigan Boulevard; it's pretty clear that he is totally hitting on her. • And she seems to be into him, too. Or maybe she just likes the attention? He tells her she reminds him of a famous actress. • As the train draws closer to the station, Drogue offers to show Carrie around while he's there in Chicago on business, but she's not sure and thinks her sister might not be too pleased with the idea of her going off with some random guy. Drogue dismisses her concern and manages to get Carrie to give him the address of her sister's place. • Next stop: Chicago. As the train pulls in to the city, Carrie takes it all in. It's kind of a big deal because, remember, this is her first time ever in the big city. • The train stops and they get off. Drogue tries to carry her suitcase, but Carrie wants to get rid of him pronto before sis shows up, so she pretty much tells him to get lost obliges, but tells her he's just going to hang around the station for a while in case her sister doesn’t bow; this pleases Carrie. • Carrie's sister arrives and spots her on the platform. They hug in a kind of perfunctory way, and right off the bat, we're alerted to "a change of affection atmosphere." It turns out that Carrie's sister is a bit of a Debbie Downer—-we're told, "Her sister carried with her most of the grimness of shift and toil." Goodtimes. • Carrie's sis asks all the usual questions: how're Mom and Dad, etc. Carrie answers distractedly, since she's looking for Drogue who indeed kept his promise to hang around to see that she met up with sister safely. • The two exchange secret smiles. Carrie arrives at her sister's one-floor apartment (and we now learn that sis is named Minnie).Pretty much the only thing Carrie likes about the place is the sound of the bells on the horse-cars outside, and the apartment itself is pretty drab with

shoddy furniture and threadbare carpet.Minnie promptly puts Carrie to work, plopping down her baby into Carrie's arms as Minnie gets dinner together. No slacking in this house, it seems. We meet Minnie's husband, Mr. Hanson, who seems less than thrilled to have his sister-in-law crashing at his apartment. He drops a hint that she'd better start looking for work. Stat. Carrie takes a better look around and gets more depressed by the meagerness of the apartment. She's also trying to keep the baby amused, but she's no Mary Poplins; the kid starts crying and Mr. Hanson has to rescue it (and yes, the baby is referred to as it—poor kid has neither gender nor name). Hanson is eager to help in this department and tells her exactly where she should look: the big manufacturing houses along Franklin Street where "lots of girls work." They chat a bit more about the neighborhood until Mr. Hanson abruptly jumps up and announces he s got to get up early so he's going to hit the sack. Time for some girl talk. Well, not exactly. Carrie asks what time Minnie gets up for breakfast and Minnie replies that she gets up at the crack of dawn: 4:40AM. Theyfinishwashingdishes. • Carrie concludes that starting something up with Drogue is probably not the best idea, given the conservative vibe around the Hanson household, so she dashes off to get some paper and ink from Minnie. She writes to Drogue telling him not to stop by, using the pretty lame excuse that her sister's place is too small. • Should she say anything more, like what a cool dude she thinks he is? Nah, she decides, short and sweet is better, though she does, of course, obsess over whether to sign it very truly or sincerely. Thenshesealsandaddressesit. • Carrie moves to the alcove in the front room where she'll be staying. She rocks on a rocking chair in front of the window, looking out onto the street until she gets tired and tumbles into bed.

• By the time Carrie rolls out of bed at 8:00AM, Mr. Hanson is long gone (he gets up almost as insanely early as his wife to get to his job at the stock-yards). • We learn a bit more about Minnie and the changes she's undergone since Carrie had last seen her. The "thin, rugged, rapidly aging" woman (at the ripe old age of twenty-seven) is clearly in need of a makeover in Carrie's view, and Minnie shares her husband's sentiment that Carrie had better get off her butt and find a job. She's optimistic that Carrie could fill the illustrious position of shop girl. • The narrator assures us that we'll be getting a front row seat to Carrie's job search in just a moment, but first the narrator assumes that we need a quick lesson on the Chicago commercial scene, so we're treated to a few paragraphs of that. It turns out that in 1889, during the Gilded Age, the city was growing so fast that there were lots of business opportunities in Chicago, which drew tons of men and women looking to make some dough (this part kind of feels like a history book, but hang in because it helps set the scene). • And, as promised, here's where we meet up with Carrie again, as she's walking through the "vast wholesale and shopping district" of Chicago. She's a little intimidated by all these huge buildings, and she's also pretty freaked out by the prospect of actually going into one of them and asking for a job. • Carrie finally works up the nerve to go into a dry goods store (similar to a modern-day department store) to ask if they're hiring. But she can't find anyone to ask, and she starts to feel overwhelmed so she leaves. • She continues to walk the downtown streets. She thinks about going back to the dry goods store and turns back, but along the way she spots another prospect: a shoe company. She asks if they need help, but is told that they don't. Arch. • The rejection isn't too devastating though—the man she talked to was polite, which encourages her so much that she tries her luck at a clothing company. This time, the manager she talks to is a jerk from the get-go; she doesn't even have it in her to ask if the company is hiring and leaves.

• After some more walking, she realizes she's starving... too bad the only thing she can afford on the menu of the restaurant she goes to is soup. But it revives her enough to continue the job search. • Carrie makes her way back to the dry goods store. The good news: she finds someone to talk to about getting a job. The bad news: they won't hire her because she has no experience. She's confronted with that super annoying catch for first- time job seekers: she needs experience to get a job, but she needs a job to get experience. • But a s not lost, and the guy she talks to at the dry goods place gives her a tip that department stores young women to be clerks (presumably without experience). • So it's off to the department sot— Wait, not so fast. The narrator gives us another little tutorial on the history of the department store first. The department store was just popping up in the U.S. around the time that the novel is set and, boy, were these stores a big deal. (You think the mall is crowded on the weekend these days? That's nothing compared to the mobs of shoppers in the late nineteenth century.) • Once inside the store, Carrie is totally mesmerized by all the stuff: "the remarkable displays of trinkets, dress goods, stationery, and jewelry." Uh, whathappenedtothejobsearch? • Carrie's pretty bummed out by the fact that she can't afford to buy anything. To top it off, she's really jealous of all the well-dressed women shoppers and shop girls around her. • She finally manages to tear herself away, and goes to the store's managerial office where a bunch of other girls are waiting to apply for jobs. She eyes the competition and fears they look way more sophisticated than she does. After a nearly hour-long wait, she's interviewed. The interview is short but not sweet, and that pesky "lack of experience" thing comes up again. • Next thing we know, she's out on the street practically in tears, ruminating on the crushing disappointments of the day. Just as she's about to throw in the

towel, she comes across a hat-making company with a Help Wanted sign posted out front for "wrappers and stitches." • She goes inside to find a pretty sorry-looking crowd of laborers; right away, Carrie concludes that this is definitely not her dream job. But when a foreman comes up to her inquiring what she's doing there, Carrie ends up asking if he needs help. He offers to give her a position putting the finishing touches on hats, and just like that she's hired. • After she leaves, she's not exactly turning cartwheels through the streets of Chicago. She thinks about how pitiful the pay is ("three and a half" per week. Yup —a whopping barely enough to pay for a latte today), and she can't get all of those haggard-looking laborers out of her mind. She figures maybe the solution is to keep looking, so it's back to the job search grind; she tries a few places with no luck, and gets treated rudely to boot. • Demoralized, Carrie makes one last-ditch effort at a wholesale shoe house (shoe factory). The man she speaks to tells her he's not sure if he can offer her anything, but to come on Monday morning and he'll see if he can find something for her to do. The pay here is a whole dollar more than the other place, so she agrees. • When Carrie steps outside, Chicago suddenly seems full of lollipops and rainbows. She heads for home to tell Minnie the great news. • Carrie is already fantasizing about all the stuff she's going to buy with her earnings from the new job, but when she tells Minnie the good news, her sister promptly bursts her bubble by asking if Carrie will have to use part of her earnings to pay for carfare. Geethanks, sis. • Mr. Hanson is relieved to hear about Carrie's triumph and his lifted spirits put Minnie in a good mood as the three sit down to dinner. As they merrily eat and converse, Carrie mentions that she'd like to go to a theater downtown to see a show. Weird, awkward silence follows. The narrator lets us know that it's likely the thought of frivolously spending money on something like the theater doesn't sit well with the frugal Mr. Hanson.

• After Mr. Hanson (whose first name we now find out is Sven) retreats to the front room after dinner and the sisters go to work washing the dishes, Carrie presses Minnie about the theater again. She even boldly suggests they go tonight. Minnie won't be persuaded though, and Carrie picks up on the fact that her hesitation is about the money so Carrie offers to pay. CarriepleadswithMinnietoaskHanson. • Uh-oh—Carrie's insistence on going to the theater throws up a red flag for Minnie. If she's so ready to waste her money, Minnie and Mr. Hanson are probably never going to see a dime of the board money they all agreed Carrie would pay them when she found a job. • But, lo and behold, Minnie asks Hanson (albeit half-heartedly) if they can all go to the theater. • She fails to convince him and Carrie announces she's going to stand "at the foot of the stairs" of the apartment building. When she leaves, Mr. Hanson tells Minnie that Carrie shouldn't be wasting monde. on theater tickets. • The next night, Carrie goes walking through town by herself to escape the dreariness of Minnie's flat. She looks longingly at all the fancy houses, and her thoughts wander to Drogue. She wonders where he is and now hopes just a little bit that he'll come by on Monday night to liven things up. • Carrie awakes Monday morning, nervous and excited about her first day on the job, but when she gets to the shoe company, Mr. Brown (the guy who hired her) approaches her like he's never seen her before (so much for a warm welcome). She tells him her name and he leads her through a room of machines, handing her off to the foreman who turns her over to a girl working at a machine. • The girl is instructed to train Carrie to work at a machine that punches shoelace holes in leather. • The narrator describes the assembly line set-up: "The pieces of leather came from the girl at the machine to her right, and were passed on to the girl at her left. Carrie saw at once that an average speed was necessary or the work would pile up on her and all those below would be delayed".

• Carrie gets to work, but she's having trouble keeping up with the fast-paced environment and she gets scolded. The room is stinking hot as the morning wears on and Carrie's back starts aching. The girl next to her tells her she can stand up so she does, but she still can't get quite comfortable. Above the racket of the machines, she listens to the other girl’s gossip about guys. • When the lunch bell finally rings, Carrie drags her weary self into the lunch space. The working conditions in the factory are horrid, with foul smells, littered floors, and no places for employees to take breaks. The narrator reminds us, though, that the novel is set ten years in the past (1889), before the real heyday of labor unions demanding better conditions for workers. • And then it's high school all over again: Carrie is the new girl who has to find people to sit with in the lunchroom. She just doesn't have the guts to break into any of the cliques so the poor girl ends up going back to her machine to eat alone. As she eats, she listens to teasing flirtations going on between male workers and some of the women and feels a bit turned off by it all. • After the lunchtime trauma, Carrie is actually glad to get back to work... that is, until she gets poked in the ribs by a smart aleck boy which makes her feel like crying. The girl next to her tries to comfort her, but Carrie can't help feeling like she's not going to last long at this place. The hours crawl by, until finally 6:00PM comes and she leaves (but not before enduring some more unwanted male attention). • We shift gears to find out what Drogue’s been up to. • After getting Carrie's letter, he pretty much put her out of his mind. He hasn't wasted any time jumping back into the Chicago nightlife scene of dining, drinking, and smoking in fancy restaurants and saloons, and he's always on the lookout for opportunities to brush shoulders with local celebrities and other successful men in the community. • In fact, he's recently become pals with one of those successful men, Mr. G.W. Hurst wood, manager of a fancy hotel called Fitzgerald and Moy's. AccordingtoDrogue, he's "someoneworthknowing.".

• We learn that Hurst wood is impressed with Drogue’s friendliness, so it seems they've got a bit of a bromine going on. They hang out at a bar and catch up a bit, when Jules Wallace, a famous spiritualist, walks in. Drogue and Hurst wood are both a little star struck.. • Drogue mentions that he has plans to see a play called The Hole in the Ground (that sounds like an exciting one); Hurst wood tells him he'd better get moving because it's getting late, but invites him to find him after the show. He mysteriously adds that he has something to show him. • As Drogue leaves, he tells Hurst wood about having met Carrie and how he intends to hang out with her before he leaves the city for work. HereallytalksheruptoHurstwood. • Carrie returns to her sister's flat and reports to Minnie and Mr. Hanson that her new job stinks; unsurprisingly, they're not particularly sympathetic. This bums Carrie out further. She realizes Minnie and Mr. Hanson just don't get her, and that she's really starting to loathe life in their apartment. • Then it dawns on her that Drogue might disregard her warning and show up tonight. Oh, geez—What's she going do if that happens? She decides to preempt any trouble by hanging out again at "the foot of the stairs" (which seems like the main doorway of the apartment) in case he shows. • The minute she leaves, Minnie and her husband start talking about her. Mr. Hanson stresses how important it is for Carrie to keep her job at the factory, adding that she probably shouldn't be standing down by the door because "it doesn't look good." Meanwhile, Carrieenjoyscheckingoutthestreetactiondownstairs. • Using the excuse that he's going out to get a loaf of bread, Hanson leaves the apartment. Yup—he's actually trying to spy on Carrie, but she knows it. Andshedoesn'tlikeit. • Drogue’s a no-show, so Carrie goes back upstairs and hits the hay. • Her second day at the factory is just about as bad as the first one, and Carrie gets yelled at by the foreman for going too slowly. She's still not fitting in with her

new coworkers either, and really hates the "rude banter" between the girls and the guys; she is totally grossed out when one of the guys starts verbally harassing her. • Déjà vu time—life at Chez Hanson that night is so unbearable that Carrie returns to her favorite hang out—that's right, the ever-exciting apartment doorway. This time though, she has a creepy encounter with a dude passing by on the street who seems to want to take her for a stroll. Foronceshe'sgladtoreturntotheflat. • The rest of the work week follows suit with the first two days, and then—to add insult to injury—one morning it starts to rain and Carrie realizes she has no umbrella. But wait—it gets worse: Minnie lends Carrie a faded umbrella, and horrified, Carrie rushes to the department store to buy a more suitable one, which of course leads to a bicker-fest with Minnie. • A few nights later, Carrie forks over to Minnie the money she'd promised to pay for board (four whole dollars). Minnie feels a little guilty taking it, but pockets it anyway, and Carrie is left wondering how on earth she's going amuse herself with the two quarters she's got left. She gets snippy with Minnie and Hanson, telling them she's going out because she wants to see something, and as usual, they start talking about her the moment she leaves. • She ends up going to you guessed it, the bottom of the stairs. But the next day, she ventures out to a park. She's not happy with that, though, because she realizes she hates her clothes. During the next few days at work, Carrie overhears girls chatting about how much of their paycheck they get to spend on themselves. • When Carrie goes home and complains to Minnie about needing winter clothes, Minnie is actually cool about it and tells her to keep more of her paycheck to spruce up her wardrobe. • Everything's coming up roses it seems well, not quite. • Just as Carrie's about to go on her shopping spree, she catches a bad cold. She ends up so sick that she can't work for three days, which causes her to lose her job. Yikes. • And it's back to job hunting. This time things seem even worse, but on her fourth day, her luck takes a turn for the better. No, shedoesn'tget a job, silly.

• She runs smack into Drogue. Suddenly she's all tingles and he's just as thrilled to see her; he invites her to lunch at a fancy restaurant. • Carrie's not sure what to order and is a little freaked out by the prices (seventy-five cents for chicken), but no worries—Drogue steps in to order for her. • Carrie fills him in on what she's been up to since arriving. She covers all the highlights, er, lowlights: working a miserable job and getting sick. Drogue is astonished to hear that she's been working in the shoe factory and assures her she's way too good to be working there. • The food rocks. And she and Drogue seem to have some major chemistry. • Drogue tries to convince her to abandon the job search. He has a much better idea about what she should be doing with her time: going to the theater with him tonight. But Carrie hesitates. Ah, Drogue sees what's going on: she needs money. • And that's where his wallet comes in. He hands her some cash and tells her to get some clothes. She protests a little at first, but... oh, those dollars in her hand feel so good (twenty bucks—a serious jackpot). He assures her it's just a loan, and then he suddenly turns psychic and tells her that he knows she doesn't want to live with her sister; he suggests that she come and meet him tomorrow to check out the matinee. • Carrie feels like her nightmare has just turned to a dream. • Carrie is totally stoked about the money Drogue gave her. She feels a flicker of shame for being "weak enough" to accept it, but she rationalizes that she really needs it, so it's all good. Plus, Drogue is even more awesome than she'd originally thought for aiding a damsel in financial distress, she thinks. • Carrie gets home, looking like the cat who ate the canary, and concerned about how to buy new clothes without Minnie getting suspicious of where exactly she got the money to pay for them. • When Minnie asks about the job search, Carrie fibs and says that she has "the promise of something" at a department store. • This doesn't ease Minnie's mind and she hints to Carrie that maybe she'd better consider hightailing it home to Mom and Dad if the job doesn't pan out. The

idea of doing that makes Carrie want to barf and she's even more grateful for Drogue’s money. • She sits in the front room and mulls over the more immediate dilemma of how she's going to buy a jacket without provoking a million questions from Minnie. All this fretting puts her in a really bad mood. • While she's eating dinner, Carrie decides the only thing to do is to return the money to Drogue, so she resolves to do just that the next day, after she looks for work (check out Miss Responsible). But it's all very depressing and the only thing that helps ease the pain is holding the dollar bills in her hand. • She goes downtown to look for jobs in the morning, but she just can't seem to bring herself to apply for anything. While she's there, she may as well do a little browsing in the department store, right? • Bad idea. The girl is totally torturing herself, looking at all this stuff she wants but knows she shouldn't buy. • Miraculously, she leaves the store without touching the twenty bucks in her pocket and goes to meet up with Drogue. He's surprised to see that she's not decked out in a new jacket and shoes—she tells him she can't take the money, which he responds to by taking her to lunch at another fancy restaurant. • Over lunch, she explains that she can't take the money because her sister would start asking questions; she mentions she might have to go back to her parents' house. But Drogue’s got a way better idea: he'll pay for her to rent a room. Plus, he'll take her on that shopping trip she deserves. (Did someone say sugar daddy?) • It's not a complete free ride he's offering, though; they both agree that it's best if she still tries to find a job. And so with just a little reservation on Carrie's part, off they go shopping and then apartment hunting. • Carrie returns to Minnie's place, and after another dinner during which Minnie and husband make it clear that an unemployed Carrie isn't going to be welcome in their home much longer, Carrie writes a note bidding them adieu. She

tells Minnie she's off to hang out in her favorite spot downstairs, but we know where she's really going: to meet Drogue on the corner. Intimations by Winter: An Ambassador Summoned • Minnie and Mr. Hanson awake to find Carrie's note. They're a little shocked, but neither rushes to call out the search party. • Carrie wakes up in her new place, a bit worried about what's going to happen to her now, but then Drogue comes over and invites her to breakfast and more shopping. Afterward, he takes her to see "The Mikado," an operetta. On the way there, Carrie spots one of the girls she'd worked with at the factory. This freaks her out so much that she bumps into a stranger. • Carrie is all about the theater, and afterward she and Drogue stop for a bite to eat. More sparks fly between them, and love is in the air as they walk arm-in- arm back to Carrie's apartment. • Jump to Minnie: She's having a nightmare about Carrie being swallowed up into a coalmine, and starts talking in her sleep, waking Sven. • Fast forward a week. Drogue drops by his pal Hurst wood’s office to invite him over to his house for a friendly game of euchre (a card game). Hurstwoodagreesandpromisestobringthebooze. Convention's Own Tinder-Box: The Eye that is Green • Meet Hurst wood. Okay, yeah, we've technically already met the guy, but now we're going to follow him around for a while. • Hurst wood lives in a pretty swank, ten-room house; he's married with a son, George Jr., and daughter, Jessica. They're all waited on by servants who usually don't last long because Mrs. (Julia) Hurst wood is so hard to please. Despite having an enormous house filled with ridiculously fancy and expensive furniture, the Hurst wood home lacks spirit. Moneycan'tbuyeverything... • Hurst wood thinks his seventeen-year-old daughter Jessica is becoming kind of a spoiled brat, obsessed with trying to impress all the super-rich kids at her high school with her wardrobe (the Hurst woods, we're told, are only kind of rich). For

his part, George Jr. is hooked up with a good job in a real estate firm, but doesn't bother to pay his parents any rent. • Mrs. Hurst wood is kind of a wannabe. She doesn't really fit into the most elite social circles, which makes it all the more crucial that her kids are able to. She has high hopes that her husband will continue to climb the corporate ladder so she can reap the benefits of his money and power. • Warm and fuzzy family, right? Not. • It's dinnertime at the Hurst wood house. George Jr. announces his upcoming plans to visit a friend's fancy boat, and sister and mom are totally impressed. Hurst wood cuts out early, telling the others that he's headed downtown. • Hurst wood leaves and Jessica tells Mrs. Hurst wood that she's going to be in a play at school, which of course is going to require her to run out and buy a new outfit. • Apparently Jessica has recently hung out with the son of a soap manufacturer, and Mrs. Hurst wood is super psyched about this prospect. • We learn more about Hurst wood’s attitudes towards his family. A scene is recounted from the past in which Hurst wood took a business trip during which it's hinted that he may have had an affair; Mrs. Hurst wood suspects he did, and ever since then she's been secretly retaliating by spending more of his money on clothes. Goteam. The Counsel of Winter: Fortune's Ambassador Calls • It seems as though Carrie has moved into Drogue’s three-bedroom apartment—her trunk and clothing are there, and we're told she's been hanging out there a lot and cooking for him. Plus, she's plagued by a guilty conscience over what she's done... though what she's done isn't spelled out. • Drogue tells Carrie about how he invited Hurst wood over, and Carrie feels a little worried about what this guy will think of their living situation. Drogue tries to reassure her by saying, "He doesn't know anything. You'reMrs. Droguenow." • Wait—what? Did we miss the wedding?

• No, no we didn't. It turns out Drogue is only pretending that they're married, but he has managed to bring up a sore subject because Carrie immediately asks why it is they haven't gotten married yet (since he'd promised). He gives her some baloney excuse about needing to wrap up a property deal before he can tie the knot. • But lest you think Carrie is head over heels for Drogue, think again. She's actually getting a little bored with the guy and wants to get married mostly for the sake of appearances (it's 1889 after all, not an era in which society is generally okay with moving in together before marriage). • Hurst wood arrives... and move over, Drogue. Now here's a guy Carrie could really fall for... and she starts to do just that from the moment he walks in. • Instead of feeling threatened, Drogue senses Hurst wood’s approval of Carrie (he's being extra charming to her) and is pleased that he's managed to bag a babe that's so attractive to a man of Hurst wood’s caliber. • Drogue and Hurst wood teach Carrie to play euchre. There's some mild flirtation going on between Hurst wood and Carrie, but Drogue still seems cool with the situation. • Before Hurst wood leaves, he invites them both to the theater. He also insists that the next time Drogue is away on business, he's just got to let Hurst wood show Carrie around. Drogueagreeswithoutbattinganeye. • Carrie and Drogue concur: Hurst wood is just the best. The narrator introduces us to some of the other occupants of the apartment building where Carrie and Drogue live: Mr. Frank Hale, the manager of a theater and his wife, Mrs. Hale, whom Carrie sometimes hangs out with. The Hales aren't rich, but Mrs. Hale sure wishes they were. The railroad treasurer's wife and her well-dressed, piano-playing daughter live across the hall. • One night, Carrie sits looking out her window and listens to the daughter play the piano; she starts feeling depressed. Drogue comes home and discovers

Carrie sitting there crying. She obviously must be upset because she's been missing him, he thinks. So, completelymisreadingthesituation, hesuggeststheywaltz. • Carrie'snotfeelingit. • Then we hop back to that night at the end of the previous chapter, though instead of being in Carrie and Drogue’s apartment, we're with Hurst wood in the cab. He's thinking about how great Carrie is and decides to send her flowers. • Fast forward a few weeks: Drogue returns from a business trip, and on his way back to the apartment he runs into a "lady acquaintance." He wastes no time inviting her to dinner—a dinner that lasts two and a half hours. • And who just happens to be at the very same restaurant? Yup—Hurst wood, whose first thought is to feel sorry for Carrie. Drogue can tell that Hurst wood pretends not to see him and he's already trying to concoct some explanation. • Soon after that night, Drogue shows up at Hurst wood’s office. Hurst wood tells him right off the bat that he saw him at dinner that night, but Drogue plays it off by explaining that the lady was an old acquaintance who pressured him into dining together. • Hurst wood invites Drogue and Carrie to dinner. For the first time, Hurst wood begins to see Drogue as his competition, but he feels more than up to the challenge. • A few days later, Drogue finds Carrie primping in front of the mirror and accuses her of getting vain. Nevertheless, he tells her to get dressed and he'll take her to a show. But Carrie's already got plans with Mrs. Hale to go a fair and she's not about to cancel them, despite Drogue’s protestations. • However, just then a letter arrives from Hurst wood inviting them to the theater that evening. CarriesuddenlyhasnoqualmsaboutditchingMrs. Hale. • Drogue and Carrie meet Hurst wood in the theater lobby, and Carrie and Hurst wood flirt up a storm before the play starts. She is totally crushing on him and thinks about how Drogue totally pales in comparison.

• Breakfast at the Hurst wood household begins with trouble: George Jr. tells Hurst wood that he saw him at the theater last night. Mrs. Hurst wood grills him about the specifics, wanting to know what he saw and who he saw it with. • Hurst wood explains that he went with Drogue and his wife, trying to make it seem like it was some business outing. Mrs. Hurst wood doesn't press him further, but she isn't buying it one bit. • She changes the subject and informs him that she expects him to accompany her that afternoon as she entertains some acquaintances of theirs. Hurst wood isn't happy because these people are total bores and he's got a ton of work to do. • Apparently Mrs. H does the same thing again soon after (ropes him into hanging out with her boring friends), eventually inspiring Hurst wood to draw a line and tell her he's too busy. She throws back in his face that he wasn't too busy for theater dates with Drogue and Carrie. Burn. • We jump to Carrie and Mrs. Hale riding through the city for the sole purpose of ogling other people's fancy houses. This is Mrs. Hale's favorite pastime. As they ride along, Carrie fantasizes about perfect people living their perfect lives inside the perfect houses. • Carrie returns to her apartment and has a newfound appreciation for just how meager the place is in comparison to all those mansions. Sheclimbsintotheoldrockingchairandmopes. • Hurst wood drops by, and Carrie thinks that he must not be aware that Drogue is out of town (yeah, sure). • Okay, it turns out he actually didn't know, though he's not too broken up about Drogue’s absence. Carrie and Hurst wood hang out and he tells her about all the cool places he's been in his life. She's even more smitten—this guy really gets her in a way Drogue never has, she thinks. • Hurst wood says that he can tell that Carrie isn't happy with her living situation. How in the world did he know? Their eyes meet and he makes a bold move by touching her hand.

• She resists, but doesn't run or kick him out "as she might have done." Hestays a bitlongerandtheytalk. • After he leaves, she feels guilty. Hurst wood, however, is thrilled because it's obvious to him that Carrie is really into him. Hewhistlesallthewayhome. • Hurst wood can't stop thinking about Carrie. This girl is way too good for Drogue, in his opinion, and he wants to see her again as soon as possible. • But Carrie feels conflicted: she's crazy about Hurst wood but she does feel some loyalty to Drogue. • We learn that because Hurst wood has been such a model employee in the past, he feels entitled to take a few hours for himself here and there during the workday, so he heads off to see Carrie at her apartment. Carrie's on her way out to take a walk, when the maid lets her know that Hurst wood has just shown up. • They go for a walk together along Washington Boulevard, a ritzy part of town. Hurst wood is nervous that he'll see someone he knows so he ducks into a livery stable to get a horse so they can go for a ride and be less conspicuous. • Hurst wood lets Carrie take the reins. Nervous tension. Finally he spills his feelings, telling her how happy he's been since they've started hanging out. Inwardlyshe'sthrilled, buttriestoplayitcool. • And then he drops the L-word. That's right—he's madly in love with her. • But she doesn't say much in return. Ouch. So he goes on talking, telling her about what a sad life he has surrounded by people he can't stand and how if he just had her everything would be okay. Sherelatestohissenseofloneliness. • He seems to be throwing himself a pity party to appeal to her sympathy, which seems pretty pathetic except that it works. This time, when he makes a move by putting his arm around her, she doesn't back away. • He tells her to say that she loves him. The cat's still got her tongue, but when he boldly goes in for the kiss: "her lips replied."

• Carrie returns from her rendezvous with Hurst wood just as Mrs. Hale takes a peek out her window. Drogue had better keep an eye on her, she thinks... and she's not the only one with suspicions. The maid who let Hurst wood in has figured out what's going on (which, incidentally, pleases her to no end since she's got a little thing for Drogue). • Carrie is so enamored of Hurst wood that she's now barely giving a second thought to Drogue. Hurst wood is similarly on Cloud Nine, hoping he can have his cake and eat it too, as he keeps up both his romance with Carrie and his home life. • Carrie and Hurst wood have a dinner date. Things don't get hot and heavy because Carrie is still pretending to be married to Drogue and Hurst wood is pretending to believe that she's married to Drogue. • Hurst wood asks her to go to the fair with him the following Tuesday but she declines, telling him it's too soon. However, they agree that they'll write to each other (as in letters—remember those?). • Drogue returns from his business trip and drops in to see Hurst wood at his office. They chitchat and Hurst wood mentions that he checked in on Carrie while Drogue was away. Hurst wood invites them both to go to a show. • Drogue returns to the apartment and kisses Carrie, who doesn't quite kiss back. Socold. • Drogue boasts about what a great job he did on his trip and how successful he's been as a salesman the past quarter and how he thinks he'll get a raise soon... and then they can get married. • Yeah, right, like that's ever going to happen, she tells him. He tries to reassure her, but it doesn't work. She doesn't think he's serious about marrying her, and Hurst wood, in contrast, seems to be dying to get her to the altar, she thinks. • Drogue mentions that he saw Hurst wood and that he's invited them to go to the theater. He also remarks that Hurst wood said that he'd stopped by while he was gone. Carrie almost blows her cover when she says that yes, he came by

Sunday. Drogue says that's funny because he'd told him that he called a week ago. Oops. • Carrie nervously answers yes to Drogue’s next question: "so he called twice?" But the naive Drogue shrugs it off, figuring that he'd misunderstood Hurst wood. • Carrie soon gets a letter from Hurst wood who tells her they need to get their story straight about how many times they actually hung out while Drogue was away. He suggests they meet up before the theater outing with Drogue. • She writes back that Drogue doesn't seem suspicious, but that she feels guilty. When they meet, Hurst wood tries to allay her conscience by telling her that as soon as Drogue’s gone, he'll fix everything. She takes this to mean that he's about to pop the question, of course. • Hurst wood and Carrie agree not to act flirtatious in front of Dorset anymore. • The curtain rises at the theater and Drogue, Hurst wood, and Carrie watch "The Covenant" (which is not a real play; this one was made up by Dreiser). And what a coincidence: there's a scene in the play in which a woman is having an affair. • After the play, Drogue remarks that he has no pity for the "chump" husband, who deserved to be cheated on for not being attentive enough to his wife. Isn'titironic? Don'tyouthink? • On their way out of the theater, a homeless man approaches the trio and asks for change. Dorset doesn't hesitate to give him a dime, but Hurst wood and Carrie are so busy making Gogol eves at each other that they pay no attention to the man. • We learn that Hurst wood’s been so wrapped up in his affair with Carrie that he's pretty much been ignoring everything going on at home. Every morning he goes through the motions of having breakfast with Mrs. Hurst wood and the kids, but mostly buries his nose in the newspaper so he doesn't have to actually talk to any of them. • We jump back to a scene in the Hurst wood home that took place on the night of Hurst wood’s latest theater outing with Dorset and Carrie (the one where

they went to see that fake play "The Covenant"). Right before he leaves for the play, Mrs. Hurst wood tells him that she wants him to get them all season tickets to the horse races. She's never asked for season tickets before, but her rich friends are getting them and she wants to "exhibit" Jessica in the hopes of attracting a rich husband for her. • Hurst wood tells her they're not easy to get and they're insanely expensive, but she throws a tantrum and he gives in. Hedoesn'tstickaroundforsupper. • We return to the present as Hurst wood eats breakfast with his family. He's irritated because Jessica keeps dropping hints that she wants to go to Europe for the summer like her rich friends. He's further ticked that George Jr. went off to another town for a tennis match and didn't tell him. Hefeelsoutoftheloopwithhiskids. • Hurst wood cheers himself up by thinking of Carrie. He contemplates the fact that Carrie has no clue that he's married and he's hopeful that she won't find out. They've become serious pen pals, writing to each other ever since the theater night. Hurst wood writes her a letter asking her to meet him in the park. • They meet up, and after exchanging a few pleasantries, Hurst wood cuts to the chase: he wants her to leave Dorset and come away with him. • She asks him where they'd go, and he asks her where she wants to go. She doesn't want to stay in Chicago because Drogue’s there, but Hurst wood would have to give up his job if they left, so he tries to convince her Chicago is big enough for all of them. • And then she drops a bomb: "I shouldn't want to get married as long as she tells him. Hurst wood panics at first, as the word bigamy flashes in his mind like a neon sign, but he can't help feeling happy that she feels so strongly about him. • Hurst wood gets a brilliant idea: he'll give Carrie a little test. He asks her what she would do if he came to her and told her that he had to go away and wasn't coming back. Wouldshegowithhim? • Duh—the answer is yes. He presses, asking if she would still go if they couldn't get married right away. She says that would be okay as long as they got

married "as soon as we got to the other end of the journey." He plays it off like he's joking, telling her he'll come get her some evening, and she reinforces her sentiment that she will only stay with him if he marries her. • They happily stroll through the park together. • Dorset is a member of the Freemasons, which is an actual secret society. We could've picked up on this way back in Chapter One by the narrator's description of his ring, but now it's made explicitly clear. • Dorset goes to a meeting at the lodge and one of his fellow masons (a.k.a. Elks), Mr. Quinces, tells him that the organization wants to raise money to buy new furniture for the lodge, so they're going to put on a play. Quinces wants Drogue’s help in finding an actress who could take one of the parts. Dorset agrees to help though he doesn't actually know anyone who could do it. • The whole thing isn't high on Drogue’s list of priorities, and a few days later he finds himself in a bind when he receives a letter informing him that the first play rehearsal is Friday night. They need the name and address of that actress he promised them pronto oops. • Desperate to find someone, Dorset asks Carrie if she'll take the role. She's flattered to death, but not sure—she has no acting experience. But Carrie has secretly wanted to be an actress after having gone to the theater, so it doesn't take much arm-twisting for Dorset to convince her to take the part. • Dorset leaves and Carrie sits in the rocking chair and fantasizes about being on stage. • Dorset drops into the lodge to let Quince know that Carrie will be taking the part (of Laura). He also decides that Carrie needs a jazzier stage name, so he christens her Carrie Maenad. Quinces gives him the script and he takes it home to Carrie.Carrie writes to Hurst wood telling him about getting the part in the play. He writes back telling her to meet him in the park the next day so he can hear more about it.

2.2 Critical review about novel “Sister Carry”. There is general agreement that Theodore Dreiser’s first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), is the work of an American Zola. The novel has usually been referred to as one of the foremost examples of naturalism in America, not only because of its realistic depiction of rather sordid living conditions and its inherent tragic view of life, but also because of its strong reliance upon determinism. The characters of the novel are not granted the least command over their lives and destinies. Charles C. Walcutt, in “Theodore Dreiser: The Wonder and Terror of Life, expressed what many other critics seemed to feel too: “The movement of the novel does not depend upon acts of will by the central figures.” Richard Lehan wrote about the element of chance in Sister Carrie and also mentions the characters’ lack of control: “Given their respective temperaments, given the setting and situation they find themselves in, what occurs to characters in Sister Carrie happens with an inevitability, with a predictability, beyond their control.”And, pointing out the sequential pat tern of the novel, he adds: “Behind the appearance of chance in this novel is a necessary relationship between scenes, a realm of causality, a river running from its source to a destined end. Carrie, Hurstwood, and Drouet are compelled to act as they do.” However, most of these assessments were made with reference to a novel which had been cut down considerably by Dreiser himself, by his wife, by his friend and mentor Arthur Henry, and by typists. Now, after the carefully prepared Pennsyl vania Edidon of Sister Carrie appeared in 1981, it is time to reassess a number of previously unquestioned features of the novel. My aim, in this fragment of an essay, is to show that the interpretation of Sister Carrie as a novel in which determinism reigns and in which none of the characters

are able to influence their fate is an oversimplification. My interpretation sees Carrie’s development in the course of the novel not primarily as a fall and a rise, but rather as a constant rise from innocence to knowledge. At the outset, Caroline Meeker is described as a young country girl, “eighteen years of age, bright, timid and full of the illusions of ignorance and youth”. Even in this modest beginning there is a seed for later growth, expressed by the word “bright.” If one of her initial qualities is going to help her later it is her brightness. Once the author has settled her comfortably on the train to Chicago, there follows a more elaborate characterization. As it appears, most readers are tempted to take note of her rudimentary mind, her self-interest, her lack of learning, and her materialistic ambitions. But this is only one side of her charac terization, it is a purely negative view of Carrie. In what Dreiser tells us about her there is also room for a positive interpretation of these first paragraphs: Carrie has obviously known true affection from her family back in Columbia City; her mind may be rudimentary because there have been no stimuli for its development yet, nevertheless it is there: “rudimentary” can also mean a beginning, material for later growth. And it is not insignificant that Dreiser should refer the aspects of her mind which await development to the “power of observation and analysis,” because this is the very power that his protagonist is going to develop through the novel. Her capacity in the power of observation is shown when she meets Charles Drogue on the train, only a few paragraphs after initial characterization. She uses her power of observation in a naive way, as the unspool country girl that she still is, for “she had not yet learned the many little affectations with which women conceal their true feelings”. “Neither was she wise enough to be sure of the working of the mind of the other”. But as soon as she meets her sister Minnie in Chicago, she accomplishes her first step in her learning process: “Carrie realized the change of affection atmosphere at once”. Her sense of intuition is fairly well developed and, together with her as yet slight power of observation, it lets her take a keen account of her new environment.

On being offered a humble job, Carrie’s cheerful optimism breaks through: “Surely Chicago was not so bad if she could find one place in one day. She might find another and better later”. Dreiser’s use of the word “surely” is always ironic, it always signals a character’s naive illusions. Here, the irony of Carrie’s illusions is quite obvious. However, what has been presented so far clearly indicates Carrie’s honest intention to do the right things and her eagerness to learn from the world about her. At her new job in the shoe factory, although her idea of work has been entirely different, she quickly learns about all the aspects of her work, about the characters of her fellow workers, and about her own ambitions. At Min nie’s flat she learns about the difference in human characters, about her own superiority in the realm of imagination, and about the reality of her loneliness. Her first interest, besides looking for work, is the theater. This interest, together with her strong imagination, points ahead to the source of her later success. If Carrie takes to a stance of observation at an early stage and keeps it up through the novel (the symbolic significance of her rocking chair having found ample comment by critics), this is not primarily due to her passive nature but rather an expression of her readiness to learn and acquire the ways of the world through observation. It has been pointed out that “Carrie can hardly talk or think,” but if her method in observing people and phenomena of her environment and drawingreasonable conclusions for herself from these observations, according to the value system available to her, is not thinking, then what else is? Her power of speech, on the other hand, is indeed undeveloped and has to wait for its chance. But the chance does come, and after Carrie’s first success on the stage, which comes because she hits upon the right words in a subtle stage situation. It would be rather odd to call her inarticulate. It becomes clear, then, that Carrie’s positive development from innocence and ignorance, through observation, imitation, mistakes and rea sonable conclusions to knowledge, compassion and her own self, guided by instincts, the desire to do the right things in the quest for life and true happiness, and the eagerness to learn about life and nature, begins early in the novel, long before she even meets Hurst wood. From this point of view it is quite absurd to say that her

rise depends upon Hurst wood’s fall.11 He is merely the next stage after Drogue, another rung in her ladder.'* Carrie’s rise is not only material or even just ironic, it is not only moral or ethical either, it is a learning process of a vulnerable individual in the difficult and complex jungle of society.It is true that Carrie is often presented as a passive person in the novel. But this is not the whole truth about her. Her choice not to do certain things can be interpreted as an action of will. For instance she refuses to accept a life like Minnie’s; this becomes clear when Hurst wood is at the end of his financial resources and it is the primary force that makes her go out and search for a job on the stage: “She was not going to be dragged into poverty and something worse to suit him. She could act”. And there are more instances in the novel where Carrie shows determination and initiative, the most important one being her decision to leave Hurst wood.What has been stated so far establishes two important facts: first, Carrie’s development goes through the whole book; second, her famous and often-heard passivity is not always apparent and often she even shows considerable initiative. Perhaps it is the important element of chance that leads so many readers into the acceptance of Carrie’s passivity. Another valid interpretation of what appears to be Carrie’s weakness or, from a moral view, her “fall,” has been offered by Donald Pier: "Carrie, as Eve, ‘falls’ not because she is weak or because her human tempters, Drogue and Hurst wood, are evil, but because the apple is beyond resistance in its attraction.” This still leaves room for her positive actions in many ways, and it manages to explain an important facet of the novel without seeing Carrie as a weak character. The novel presents a continuing growth; almost with every new adventure Praised tells us something about Carrie’s progress. By checking through the whole book and looking for passages that inform the reader about Carrie’s impressions and intentions, one can only confirm this development, this learning process. Soon after moving in with Drogue she is “beginning to see where he lacked”, and Dreiser tells us: “Ah, how rapidly women learn. In the main they are Jesuits by instinct”.When Carrie feels attracted by Hurst wood, the main reason for the effect of his appeal to her is not a selfish one, but she thinks of Hurst wood’s needs first.

Her reasons are more altruistic than selfish. The new possibilities with Hurst wood help her develop her power of initiative: “She had some power of initiative, latent before, which now began to exert itself' Just as Carrie has learned to see through Drogue and his motives, she begins to see Hurst wood for what he is. And when she meets Robert Ames, it is clear to the reader at once that this is the person to guide Carrie on towards higher aims. When her material success at last sets in, Carrie has reached a stage that is a platform from which she can look back on her experience, and a starting point for her further development. This further development will necessarily be influenced by Ames’s ideals: “Experience of the world and of necessity were in her favor. No longer the lightest word of a man made her head dizzy. She had learned that men could change and fail. Flattery in its most palpable form had lost its force with her. It required superiority—kindly superiority, to move her—the superiority of a genius like Ames”. This passage marks the last stage in Carrie’s development that the reader can witness. On this stage, at last, it is possible for her to consider her “old illusion” that someone else might need her aid in a different context. On receiving her first 150 dollars she has to think of less fortunate people. This points towards her duties in the future. Ames tells her to read Balzac, which she does; and this strengthens her wish to contribute to human happiness. Looking back over the whole development through the novel, one can see that there is a direction towards the positive. It has been maintained that the backbone of Sister Carrie is “expounding the purposelessness of life,” but from this per - spective life does not seem completely purposeless. There is hope at the end of the novel, particularly since there is room for change and for a higher aim in Carrie’s further career. Her own thoughts of the poor, the influence of Balzac and Ames, and the force of her own experience all point out the path for her: “Not money. Not clothes. Not applause. but goodness—labor for others". Since Ames has told her, “If you have powers, cultivate them”, her path towards “labor for others” can only lead through her talents as an actress, through art. There is hope in art, but the artist must be selfish to a certain degree. Carrie’s art, the theater, can only be fully

realized in the great city. Thus, if Carrie was yearning for beauty in true nature, she was right in looking for it in the great city. Her initial move to Chicago, naive as it might have appeared at the time, proves to be a step in the right direction for her. There have been extensive critical arguments about Dreiser’s weaknesses. The character portrait of Carrie was praised at an early stage in Dreiser criticism; it often seemed to be the only acknowledged quality of an otherwise heavily flawed novel. Carrie’s art connects her with other social classes and opens the path towards genuine sympathy and compassion for the needy. I do not agree with the opinion that “her sympathy for the difficulties of others is superficial and fleeting.” On the contrary: she convinces as a character who learns to feel sympathy. Whether she manages to act on the strength of this new capacity or not lies outside the novel, but there is evidence to show where her path might lead her. Dreiser has often been understood as a great novelist in spite of his naturalism. I have tried to show that his naturalism is of a very particular kind; it allows for character development within the forces of society. If Carrie performs actions based on her own will, so does Hurst wood. Although the conditions of society are harsh and do not make it easy for him, his fall is his own fault to a considerable degree. His fault is that he does not allow himself to judge his position adequately. It has been asserted that Hurst wood and Carrie are both made victims of the American system. This is only one half of the truth. The other half, as I have shown, is the initiative (or lack of initiative) of the major characters. Carrie is referred to, early in the novel, as Drogue’s “pupil and victim”. As it appears, she emancipates herself from her victimized position, from dominating male companions and even, to a certain extent, from the limitations of the American system. And this is only possible through art. Art makes her more clearly a pupil than a victim.

In addition to his eight novels, Theodore Dreiser’s work includes four books of short stories and sketches, four about trav el, two of autobiography, one of poems, one of phayvonatdunlays, and four, best described as miscellanies, in which he mixed science, more autobiography, politics, and social problems. But we read the rest of his writing mostly because it illumines the novels. They are his claim to greatness, and it is on them that any attempt to assess his achievement must fix attention. Current criticism tends to honor him most for Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925), assigning second best either to Jennie Gerhardt (1911) or to the first two parts of his “Trilogy of Desire," The Financier (1912) and The Titan (1914); much less is said in praise of the third part of the trilogy, The Stoic (1947), or of The Bul wark (1946); and of The "Genius" (1915) more critical evil has been spoken, probably, than good. We have only recently begun to concede what the Europeans have told us for years, that the achievement these novels represent was truly a major one.No one contests that Dreiser knew the kind of American life he wrote about at first hand. The uneasy, unhappy boy, ashamed of his parents and of the way the family lives, and deprived by birth of the plea-Once he was old enough Dreiser was off to Chicago on his own, ' employed at first at such jobs as dishwashing in a greasy restau rant or driving a laundry wagon, but in time finding newspaper work on the Daily Globe, where he began what turned out to be a long and slow

apprenticeship. Wherever he went more experi enced hands taught him what they knew. From Chicago he moved to Sl Louis and jobs on the Republic and the Globe-Democrat. / Then he drifted slowly eastward, looking for a place to settle/ down, with stops in Grand Rapids, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo/ and finally Pittsburgh, where he found a job on the Dispatch. But, in 1910, the mother of Miss Thelma Cudlipp objected so vehemently to Dreiser's attentions to her daughter that she packed the daughter off to Europe and got Dreiser fired from the Delineator. In the same year he and Sara White completed their separation. The year following he published Jennie Gerhardt. The next fifteen years were to be his period of incessant produc tivity. Sister Carrie is undeniably a serious and grim story. Carrie Meeber finds life in Chicago as harsh as it ever was back in Wis consin, and learns that no one cares much whether she starvesShe lets Charles Drouet, the salesman she meets on the train from home, set her up in an apartment She quits him for Hurst- wood, the manager of Fitzgerald and Moy’s prosperous saloon, who steals his employer’s funds, abandons his wife and family, and runs away with her to New York. While Hurstwood’s for tunes decline, she parlays her small talent, and her good looks, into a career on the stage, and eventually cuts him loose. He goes downhill to a suicide that is literally a pauper’s death, while Carrie, when last seen, is on her way to further fame and fortune. If Dreiser had made her a calculating little vixen who stopped at nothing to get what she wanted, the story would not be half so effective. In the finished version she isn’t even really promis cuous, and none of her moves toward secure ease is really planned. She moves in with Drouet because she doesn’t want to go back to Wisconsin, and leaves him again because she suspects that he won’t ever put through the “little deal" that would let them marry: Poor Hurstwood is also a creature of circumstances. His marriage has cooled, and his wife is dominating, grasping, and shrewish. Naturally —as One can see how Frank Doubleday may have despaired of sell ing Sister Carrie in a country where belief in moral

responsibility was fundamental. Yet Dreiser was working from life. His sister Emma had come from the country to Chicago, and had formed a liaison with one L. A. Hopkins who, like Hurstwood, had stolen money so that they could run away to New York. Emma hadn’t had Carrie’s subsequent success, but in other respects Carrie is no more an invention than is his picture of the mean life of poverty she wants to avoid at any cost. The life of the urban poor he knew at first hand; he had been jobless in Chicago himself and knew the skid rows of a half-dozen cities; some of the pages in Sister Carrie are lifted almost verbatim from Dreiser’s early news paper sketches of more or less picturesque misery. A stria moral ist could condemn Carrie and Hurstwood, and also condemn Dreiser for not condemning them, but he could hardly deny the authenticity of their story. His reading had convinced Dreiser that there must be “laws” by which the "forces” governing our lives may be seen to oper ate, and these laws must be open to scientific explanation.Dreiser is in exactly the opposite position. He is demonstrating nothing. From Sister Carrie to The Stoic he pictures life with all the faithfulness he can muster, but casts about gropingly for ex planations. They are often inadequate, to a point that such no tions as his theory of the "chemisms” that determine personality, or of the electricity that passes from one person in love to the other, are best taken as metaphor. And because he often seems ( unaware of the inadequacy, his disquisitions may strike an ir- ritable reader as pompous ignorance. If a naturalist is a writer who treats humans as products of nature, and nature in turn as the seat of the “forces” that shape / life, and if in doing so he leaves the impression that nature means more to him than art, then Dreiser was indeed a naturalist. Taine had written that vice and virtue axe chemical prod ucts like sulfuric acid and sugar; and Dreiser says in Dawn that with a slight change in the mixture of body chemicals his brother Paul would have been a great man.

CONCLUSION Investigating the life and activity of Theodor Dreiser I have come to such conclusion that he was stronger than all the others of his time in writing real novels. He was the leading figure in a national literary movement that replaced the observance of Victorian notions of propriety with the unflinching presentation of real- life subject matter among other themes his novels explore the new social problems that had arisen in a rapidly industrializing America. American author outstanding representative of naturalism, whose novels depict real life subjects in a harsh life of American society. As the family moved from town to town. Dreiser's schooling was in a bad state. He left home when he was 16, he worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher he studied at Indiana University. Dreiser's novels were held to be amoral, so he decided to battle throughout his career against censorship and popular taste. This started with “ Sister Carry” (1990). Discussion of Dreiser and his fiction has often served as a vehicle for cultural and literary polemics, criticism of his writing frequently reveals as much about its moment as about its ostensible subject. From the appearance of “Sister Carry” to the present an opportunity to examine. Dreiser also has meant an opportunity to press the claims of a particular view of American life and thus, a specific concept about the nature of fiction. The main content of the novel is that dissatisfied with life in her rural Wisconsin home 18-year old country girl Caroline “Sister Carry” Meeber takes the train to Chicago, where her older sister Minnie and her husband Sven Hanson agreed to take her in. On the train Carrie meets Charles Dracut, a salesman, who wore shining shoes, smart suit and there was thick purse in his hand, attracted her attention. They exchange contact information. Soon Carry found a job with difficulties in shoe factory. After a day or two she was shocked by physical demands of the job and factory conditions. She wrote a letter to Drouet about her sister and her husband's disapproval. Once Drouet came and encourages her to dine with him. Then he gave Carry two ten dollar bills for her material possibilities. She bought jacket and shoes. She decided to move in with Drouet. She wrote a good bye note to Minnie. They lived in a much larger apartment together. By the time Drouet introduces Carry to George Hurswood, the manager of Fitsgerald and Moy's a respectable bar. Hurst wood was unhappy with his social-climbing wife and children. Hurstwood communicated and met with Carry secretly in the expanding anonymous city. His wife Julia learns from acquantances that her husband was driving out with another woman. After a night drinking Hurstwood stole a large amount of money from unlocked safe from Fitsgerald office. He found out tharDrouet was ill. He persuaded Carry to escape with him to Canada. He suggested her to marry and by agreeing they moved to New York city. In New York they lived as George and Carry Wheeler. Hurstwood bought a saloon to provide Carry with a satisfactory. But Carry realized Hurstwood no longer of his powerful manager of his Chicago days. Carry's dissatisfaction only increased when she met Robert Ames, young scholar from Indiana, her neighbour's cousin. He introduced her to the art. At that time the landlord of the saloon sold his property. Hurstwood soon discovered his savings were running out and recalls Carry to economize everything Carry's attitude for theatre serves her well and became chorus girl. Her friend another chorus girl Zola Osborne offers to move in with her. Hurstwood became scab, begger, driving street car, homeless. Once, hecommited suicide, switched on the gas and died.

We shift to Carry, she is lonely. Her favouritething , sitting in her rocking chair and spent her time dreaming her past life.
