Simply putting students in pairs or groups is not sufficient for improving comprehension. The type of discussion is very important, and there must be structures in place to stimulate discussion. Simple structures, such as numbered heads and think ‐ pair ‐ share, enhance student participation and accountability and are easily incorporated into the sequence of instruction. There are many other ideas for structures teachers can use to keep students engaged and motivated. Actuality of the work: Students consider the ideas of their peers and share their own idea off of it (develop or expand the idea). Students summarize the information shared by their peers (rephrase) and make comments on specific parts. Students raise inquiry about what their peers share. The teacher should practice modeling a good conversation and the “wrong way” to hold a conversation prior to having students engage in this activity. Aim of the work: The teacher creates a prompt that requires students to utilize their judgment and the content presented to take a position; this is recorded on the board so that students can refer to it as they fill in the boxes to the template. Students record their judgment and a rationale for what they believe in the first box. Students then pass their papers to the right, and read and add a supporting rationale that goes along with their peer’s judgment (even if they don’t agree). Students are then asked to pass their papers to the right, and read what is in both of their peers’ boxes and add something that might be used as an opposing rationale (whether they agree with the rationale or not). Students are then asked to pass their papers to the right and add their own opinion, supporting it with their rationale, in the final box. Students are asked to give the papers back to their original owners. Volunteers are called upon to share with the class some of the arguments for and against on their carousel forms. Teachers need to remember that the discussion belongs to the students because the work of extracting information from text requires their efforts. It is their learning opportunity. The teacher sets the tone and pattern for discussion by the role that he or she assumes; therefore, the role of the teacher is to remain neutral. Effective contributions that a teacher can make to create an efferent discussion include: • Leading students back to the text • Challenging students to support their position or claim about the text • Asking questions that guide students to question the text or their position/claim about the text Any comments or body language that teachers display to discourage students from relying on the text as their primary source of information during discussion will derail the text extraction process and goal of an efferent discussion. Teachers need to know specifically what types of things they can say or do to sustain an efferent discussion. Any of the following are appropriate: • Paraphrasing what they hear students say during discussion that may need clarification for the benefit of the listeners • Posing a question to the entire group to grapple with an issue that the group may not have yet considered during the course of their discussion • Pointing out some specific information from texts that are open to various interpretations, followed by a question such as, “What do you think the author was thinking when he/she wrote this?” Discussion protocols are helpful guidelines for students and teachers to use in the process of conducting discussions. Teachers need to keep in mind the following when determining guidelines for efferent discussions: • The expectation of the text

• The nature of the discussion • The type of interactivity required of the participants The teacher should use the Efferent Discussion Protocol to set expectations for students and use them to redirect conversation that strays from the guidelines. Mixed ability or ‘heterogeneous’ classes are terms used to describe classes made up of students of different levels of proficiency. These terms are misleading as no two learners are really alike and ‘homogeneous’ classes do not actually exist (Ur, 1991). All classes are to some degree made up of learners who differ in many

ways. They may have different strengths, weaknesses and approaches to learning. They may respond differently to various teaching methods and classroom situations. In this article, I cover mixed ability factors, the problems with and advantages of teaching mixed ability classes as well as strategies for teachers who teach mixed ability classes. Mixed Ability Factors There are many factors that influence the characteristics of the learners that make up one single class. Some of these factors include:  Age or maturity  Intelligence and multiple intelligences  Learning style  Language aptitude  Language levels  Mother tongue  Learner autonomy  Motivation or attitude towards the subject  Cultural background Possible problems teachers may face Teachers may encounter a number of problems when teaching in mixed ability environments. These are some comments made by teachers about their experiences of teaching mixed ability classes:

Richmond Publishing According to Ur (1991: 303), some of the challenges teachers of mixed ability classes may face include:  Discipline - Teachers may find their mixed ability classes are chaotic or difficult to control. Discipline problems occur when learners feel frustrated, lose concentration, get bored, or behave in a disruptive manner. Some reasons why mixed ability classes may be more difficult to control may be because different learners may find the subject matter easier or more difficult to grasp, weaker learners may require more assistance from the teacher, or more advanced learners may dominate aspects of the lessons.  Interest – Learners may differ in their learning styles, motivation and interests. Teachers of mixed ability classes may find it difficult to provide content and activities that are motivating and interesting to all learners in a class.  Effective learning for all – In mixed ability classes it is difficult to provide effective learning for all learners. The content or activities in a lesson may be too easy for some and too difficult for others.  Materials – Materials are usually rigidly aimed at a certain kind of learner and may not offer teachers options or flexibility.  Individual awareness – Teachers may find it difficult to get to know and follow the progress of all learners in a class. In classes where there are many differences, teachers are not able to devote time and attention equally to all learners (Šimanová, 2010).

 Participation – In mixed ability classes, more advanced learners tend to participate more actively than weaker learners. Lack of participation or attention from the teacher, may further affect weaker learners proficiency in the subject.  Correction – Teachers may feel overwhelmed by the marking load and may also not feel equipped to deal with the errors made by a student. For example a subject teacher may not feel comfortable correcting a learner’s language errors.  1.2 . Advantages of teaching mixed ability classes Due to the frustrations felt by teachers teaching mixed ability classes, it can sometimes be difficult to see the advantages of teaching mixed ability classes. There are a number of advantages to teaching mixed ability classes. Mixed ability classes provide a rich pool of human resources (Ur, 1991). Learners come to class with different knowledge, experiences opinions, ideas and interests which can be drawn on to provide interesting, varied student-centered lessons (Hess, 2001). Such diverse classes are interesting to teach and provide greater opportunity for innovation and creativity. There is ‘educational value’ in mixed ability classrooms, as through their interaction, students can help and learn from each other (Ur, 1991:305). Learner autonomy is developed in such learning environments, as teachers may not be able to always tend to the individual, learners help or teach each other, work together or individually. Mixed ability classes provide opportunity for teachers to develop themselves professionally, as teachers need to adopt a problem solving approach to the difficulties they face and experiment with a range of teaching approaches. Tomlinson (1999:28) aptly stated that ‘A secure teacher comes away from today with important questions to puzzle about overnight and the belief that today contains insights necessary for a more effective tomorrow.’ Why learn to manage mixed ability classes? Teachers may feel frustrated by the challenges they face in their mixed ability

classrooms and may not know how to create successful learning and teaching environments that meet the needs of all learners in a single class. Bremner (2008) states that the ‘biggest stumbling block to effective mixed ability teaching would seem to be teacher attitude. Teachers lack the knowledge of strategies to use in the classroom for a wide range of ability.’ Teachers who are familiar with the different abilities and needs of their learners and use mixed ability teaching strategies effectively are much better equipped to meet the diverse learning needs of their learners (Šimanová, 2010). CHAPTER II. Strategies for teaching mixed ability classes Some useful strategies for managing mixed ability classes (Šimanová, 2010, Bremner, 2008) are listed below:  Supportive learning environment – It is important to create a supportive learning environment in the classroom, where learners feel confident and able to perform to the best of their ability.  Classroom management – By managing classes effectively, teachers can ensure that learners will be involved as much as possible in the lesson. Classroom management techniques include organising the classroom layout for maximum learning potential, involving all students, learning and using learners’ names, teachers cultivating a positive attitude through their own attitude to the class, praise and encouragement, grading and using relevant teacher talk, using the board effectively and managing learning activities by giving good instructions, asking concept checking questions, using pair and group work, setting time limits, monitoring the activity and including feedback on the activity.  Learning to learn – Teach learners about different learning styles and the different learning strategies for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. Teach learners how to be resourceful so that they know where to find help if they get

stuck. Provide learners with the goal for the lesson and encourage learners to review and assess whether they have achieved the goal by the end of the lesson.  Variety – Vary topics, methods of teaching, focus, materials and activities. Variety will generate learner interest and motivation; and lessons will accommodate different learners’ levels, abilities and learning styles.  Grouping – Use a range of interaction patterns in class. Learners should work in groups, pairs and individually. Groupings should be changed often, thereby giving learners an opportunity to work with different learners.  Pace – Teachers must be mindful of the pace of their lessons. Teaching a class too slowly or too quickly may lead to boredom or frustration. A teacher must be aware of his/her learners’ abilities and pitch the pace of the lesson accordingly.  Interest – Teachers need to make the lessons interesting in terms of content, topic and activities. To find out what interests the learners, teachers could find out what interests the learners outside the classroom, allow learners to share their interests with the class through project work and personalization activities, such as ‘show and tell’, or allow learners to chose the content, topics or activities for lessons, where appropriate.  Collaboration – Getting learners to work together and cooperating has a number of benefits for the learners and teacher. Learners develop their learner autonomy and learn from their peers, rather than always being reliant on the teacher. Learners who collaborate on tasks learn how to compromise, negotiate meaning and develop self-evaluation skills. Collaboration tasks can involve project work as well as pair or group activities.  Individualization – Hess (2001:12) describes individualization as ‘providing opportunities for students to work at their own pace, in their own style and of topics of their choosing’. Individualization can be promoted in the classroom through portfolios, self-access centres, individualized writing or personalised dictionaries.  Personalisation – Ur (2001:306) suggests including activities which allow learners to respond personally. Such tasks increase learners’ motivation and

interest as they are based on something the learners have experienced and can relate.  Blooms taxonomy – Make use of higher order thinking skills by providing learners with problem-solving, analysis, evaluation and synthesis activities, rather than only comprehension tasks.  Open-endedness – Open-ended activities allow learners to respond to tasks and questions which have a variety of possible answers rather than one correct answer. Open-ended tasks allow learners to perform at their level of ability. Such tasks include sentence completion activities, story completion activities, brainstorming, writing own definitions for words, answering questions in a range of ways.  Compulsory plus optional tasks – Ur (2001) suggests learners are assigned compulsory tasks with additional materials should they finish the core tasks. By setting compulsory plus core tasks, all learners are engaged and can feel a sense of achievement when completing a task.  Adapting materials – Course books are designed for a particular language level and do not offer much flexibility. As a result teachers may need to adapt the materials to make them easier or more challenging.  Homework – Homework is an excellent tool to provide learners of all levels and abilities with an opportunity to review and consolidate the material covered in class. In reality, every class can be described as a mixed ability class as it is made up of learners who are different in terms of their knowledge and ability. This article aimed to outline mixed ability factors and the advantages and problems associated with teaching mixed ability classes. Studies have shown that teachers who view their learners’ differences in a positive way and embrace strategies for teaching mixed ability classes are better equipped to teach in mixed ability classroom contexts.

2.1 Teaching students who are clearly of different levels. You may often be teaching a class which has students who are clearly of different levels. They may have different starting levels of English or they may learn at very different speeds - for any number of reasons. These are several strategies that a teacher can use to deal with this situation. This is the first of two articles on the topic. The second article covers... Discussion and needs analysis Student self-awareness Work groupings Discussion and needs analysis It is easy for students to get frustrated in a class of mixed ability. Stronger students may feel held back, weaker students may feel pressured. The teacher may feel stressed. The best solution to this is to have an open-class discussion about the classroom situation - to ensure the best for everyone it is better to acknowledge the situation and for everyone to agree how to deal with it. It is probably best to stage and structure the discussion. Needs Analysis Use a needs analysis to prompt the students to reflect upon their learning style, learning strategies, language needs, learning enjoyment, motivation, language strengths and weaknesses. Questions that might be included are... What kinds of class activities do you enjoy / benefit from? Which language skill do you most wish to develop? Do you prefer working individually or with a partner? Would you rather sit and listen to the teacher all lesson or participate in group work? Students compare their answers in pairs or small groups. You should collect the information and prepare a statistical representation of the key questions and answers. This will help to develop the sense of shared community in the class. Explain and discuss

Explain the mixed-level situation to the students and give a list of possible approaches to the teaching and learning. In pairs, the students rank the approaches/ ideas according to their suitability for the situation. Following feedback, you should highlight the strategies you plan to use. A student contract Developing with the students, or perhaps writing it yourself, a contract of behavior for activities is a useful device. 'I will help and support my activity partner.' 'I will participate in group work.' Tell them what you are going to do If you think your students are not mature enough to carry out this kind of reflection, explain the situation to the class and tell them what strategies you will be using. If students know what to expect, you can hope that they will cooperate. All of the above work could be done in the mother tongue, although I feel it is best done primarily in the target language (as it draws attention to the fact that this is a learning language issue.) Student self-awareness Encourage students to develop an awareness of their own language abilities and learning needs. What are their strengths and weaknesses, and how can they focus on these? How can they measure their own progress This may take the form of a learner's diary, regular self-assessment, keeping records of mistakes, keeping a record of things learnt. Work groupings Varying the way students work in the class will help meet the variety of levels in the class. Pair work You can pair strong with strong, weak with weak, or strong with weak. Perhaps in

a very controlled activity, the strong with weak will work well. In a freer activity, perhaps strong with strong will be of benefit. Variety in the pairings is the key here - and you should also be sensitive to the general relationships between different students, and learn to note who works well with whom. Group work These groups could be of mixed levels or similar ones. The hope is that in a smaller group, the weaker student will feel more able to contribute. Also, if the group is working with a set of information, divide the information between the students, forcing them to work together. You may consider dividing your class into groups by level for the whole lesson, enabling you to give a different level or number of tasks to each group. Discussion of this strategy with the class should help prevent stigmatisation. Whole class - mingles This is a favored strategy of mine. A mingle activity involves students talking or interacting with many different members of the class in a short period of time in order to achieve a task. This means that any one student will work with students at different levels - experiencing stronger and weaker levels of communication. This supports the weaker students and provides opportunities for the stronger ones. A classic activity is a 'Find someone who...' In this activity the student has to survey the class to find people who…(for example) …have got something - Do you have a CD player? Or… …have done something - Have you eaten fish and chips? Or… …like something - Do you like tennis? If a student answers yes to a question, then the other student should ask for more information. If a student answers no, then the other should find a new person to

ask, and may come back to the first student with another question later on. The potential for this is endless. It is a great way to provide practice of a particular language structure/area (10 questions all using the past simple) and provides controlled practice as well as the opportunity for further freer discussion. It also creates a lively classroom dynamic. Mingles can take many forms - students may have to find the person who has a matching word to theirs, or the second half of a split sentence. The students may all have the same or different questions, or a mixture. The key is the general principle of an information gap or communicative need. Overall, variety in the types of working groups, and an open discussion of the class situation will help to deal with some of the difficulties that are present in mixed ability classes. The aim of these strategies is to create a positive working environment, which is all part of ensuring better learning. 2.2 The importance in the classroom situation, to make the best possible environment for the weaker students All three teachers thought a quiet and calm atmosphere was important. They all also believed that the teacher needs to use very clear instructions. It is not enough to just say something. The teacher needs to write on the board, repeat, walk around and make sure they know what to do. The female teacher added that the teacher must be very well prepared and know exactly what he/she is going to do, and always bring extra material. The teacher also has to encourage everyone. It is important to give positive feedback, comment on both content and language and give them advice on what they need to practice more, not just correct the mistakes.

The special teacher also added that the students need to feel that they know what to do, how to do it and that they understand and do not feel stupid. It is important to enhance their self-confidence, so they are not afraid to ask questions. She also believed that it is very important how the teacher approaches them. The teacher may need to decrease the material to work with as well as give them time and offer extra help. Do you talk to your students, one at a time, about how they are doing in English and what they need to improve? Again there was a difference between what the regular teachers said and what the special teacher said. The male and the female teacher said that they did so at least once each course, often once in the middle and another time at the end, after the national tests. Both wished they had more time to talk to the students. If a student has specific problems they usually talk with him/her earlier and may even contact the special teacher in English. The student can be given the offer to take an extended A course with the special teacher instead. The male teacher said that he tries to motivate them by encouraging them, boosting their self confidence, telling them not to compare themselves with others in the class. Both the male and the female teacher give the students advice on how to improve. The special teacher told me that she has these talks all the time. She always encourages each student, and if she is displeased she lets them know that too. She discusses what is hard for them and how they think she could help them, for example if they would like more individual help. She gives them tips all the time. It is a constant dialogue. What kind of special help in English does your school offer? At what point do you offer this to the student? All teachers told me that they offer the help of a special teacher in English and that they get this offer early. Every student does a test in English, Swedish and Maths when they start upper secondary school, and based on their results some students get the chance to go to a special teacher in English. There are two kinds of special

help. The first one is just support in addition to the regular English classes, and the second one is an offer of special teaching in English only. The second one is offered if the student does not pass the A course. They are then given the opportunity to attend a prolonged A course with the special teacher instead. It has been shown that the students who get this extra help really appreciate it. The female teacher added that she thought the school should have more special teachers in English. It is necessary because now all students have to study English, and not all are motivated to do so. She believed that we need more resources because the number of students needing extra help is increasing. But it is very important to talk to the student about it, show that we care and that they have to decide what is best for them.
